Distance the rocky films the Brian had an idea and the idea 1:02 was what do I like to talk about and what am I passionate about and you know I'm not a woodworker I I don't paint I 1:07 don't build small uh items with toothpicks so I'm wondering so much 1:13 about you I enjoy podcast this thing I actually enjoy listening to podcast I have about five or six different 1:20 podcasts on my phone at any time that I that I shuffle through as I've gotten older I enjoy talking and being talked 1:28 to by uh by people almost almost more than music I thought well what can I talk about and what do I like and I love 1:33 Rocky and anyone that knows me and anyone that's listening to this that uh knows me from outside you know my walls 1:40 knows that I love Rocky so we're going to talk about Rocky I too love Rocky Ryan doesn't really believe me well I I 1:47 do believe you and I actually I honestly thought you just how do I sh I say this no just just 1:54 say it gloves are off wow the first boxy pun of many um I hope many well if uh if 2:03 we're going to if we're going to go toe to- toe during this podcast put me against the ropes okay 2:09 well I'll never count you out that being said I just I thought you 2:16 tolerated Rocky if that makes sense that you thought it was cute if that you know like does that sense I don't know if 2:22 anybody has ever thought Rocky to be cute well adorable even like a character 2:28 that people you know you can maybe you could see why people would enjoy it but I I never knew what your level was of of 2:34 Rocky truthfully everybody shows their appreciation for something differently you know like when I was a kid I was 2:41 like really really into whatever band and like everybody knew it for movies I 2:47 always enjoyed them never really got into them watching them over and over again actually I don't watch movies over 2:53 and over again true okay I well I didn't really know that about you however I have seen all the Rockies multiple times 2:59 so of all the movies that I've watched multiple times would be Rocky probably 3:04 the only movie that I've watched the most above any other movie is better off 3:09 dead John kusak it's like a 1980s movie well I I know the movie I'm just trying 3:14 to find the correlation I think we just lost half our audience we just put the same level of 3:21 uh you you value the Rocky movies as much as a John Candy 198 no no no John 3:26 kuzak John oh oh that's even worse okay well better off dead I know I know the movie you're talking he a teen who can't 3:33 find his place in uh the school I haven't seen it his his uh uh obese 3:39 neighbors very annoying cuz that was like anybody that was obese in the'80s was also annoying well of course they go 3:46 hand in hand which of course they don't um because if that was true then we 3:51 would just lost everybody we just we now alienated everybody so I actually have 3:57 not seen better off yeah I do know title the clever I guess his name no no no no 4:02 not Ted Better Off Ted is a TV show oh my goodness better off dead okay John 4:07 kusac so was he dead no it's just saying why would why would he life would be 4:13 better off if he was dead life would be better wow cuz life was so difficult as a teenager okay so and and then a French 4:19 foreign exchange student of course comes in with the the obese family and then they have a connection wow yeah okay so 4:27 you seen better off Dead with John 4:33 Cusack as many if not more times in the Rocky 4:38 films uh yes but never changed my life never inspired me Rocky does good well 4:45 good I think we if you guys haven't turned off the podcast we brought you back in we want you here we need you here 4:53 Ryan's going to say please edit that out no no keep that please we want to let you know that as we talk Rocky there 5:00 might be there might be times and that we go on tangents I'm also known for my tangent so people that know me know me 5:06 for Rocky I love for I host another podcast called always hungry podcast I interviewed Lou fro The Incredible Hulk 5:27 and let me tell you interviewing a deaf person mhm that doesn't talk at all 5:32 makes for horrible podcast yes so I appreciate the fact that you're going to be talking yes 5:39 so Lou you've been working out for 52 years what motivates you my passion thanks Lou that's good well 5:47 passion is important uh and he uh he was great in King of Queens and he was great uh as 5:53 the Hulk uh he's also great on Celebrity Apprentice I don't know if you ever saw him yeah he's a big Trump uh he's a trump supporter yeah and uh in fact his 6:00 personality on Celebrity PR is no offense Lou u i I don't think he'll be listening if he is if you're offended 6:07 it's just because you're heart of hearing yes it's true everything else is just positive uh he he had a bit of a temper so like his character the Hulk he 6:15 oh really yes he got angry yeah that's that's a side note that is a side not yeah I'll be seeing actually Lou live in 6:21 a couple weeks so maybe he'll come back to this Lou good yeah good the good Lou so back to Rocky we're going to be uh 6:28 doing three act every movie has about three acts the the beginning the problem 6:33 and the resolution and so for each movie of the rocky series Rocky uh 1 through 7 6:41 7 is also known as Creed uh we're going to be doing three episodes for each one 6:46 so this episode we'll be talking about the First Act of of Rocky now if you 6:52 were to say to yourself listeners when do you think the First Act ends think for a second I was uh I was wrong about 7:00 where the First Act ended According to some of the screenplay gurus out there I thought the First Act ended when uh 7:06 spoiler alert I hope you see this movie in fact we should talk about that all spoilers maybe 7:15 all this every episode will be spoil spoiler Al spoil alert Rocky does not 7:23 win the fight at the end of Rocky won wow yeah I just went right you spoil 7:30 the movie from 1976 I figure was it uh 40 years should 7:35 be enough time to uh blow the LD off that yeah please by all means watch we 7:42 recommend you watch rewatch or even like me if you just seen them a thousand times you can follow along we're just 7:48 happy that you're here in the journey but it might be good to look ahead at the episodes ahead and rewatch these things and get a kick out of what we 7:54 have to say uh act one of Rocky is the most important of all of the Rockies 8:00 because it sets up that Rocky which then of course sets up all consecutive six 8:06 that follow now the very first scene of Rocky one is what it's the the picture 8:11 uh it's Jesus so why do you think that was I know Stallone is religious and I 8:18 know he hasn't always been uhuh so he's he's Roman Catholic he's Roman Catholic yes Italian so maybe goes without saying 8:25 he's a I think that's a racist Ryan no it's not racist is just uh profiling 8:31 it's interesting in the Rocky series the the uh two of his main antagonists were of the uh 8:40 non-white uh descent wow that was very very 8:45 difficult for you to say so but okay so the first picture the first scene we have is a picture of Jesus looking down 8:52 upon the fighters pans out and we see Rocky going toe-to-toe with the 8:57 legendary the one and only Spider Rico I don't think spider was his given name at his birth in fact Rocky was not his 9:04 given name oh what's his given name well I'll have to dig a little bit deeper and in fact let's talk about this those who 9:10 listen we're going to have a Facebook page please by all means catch us on our own flubs catch us on our own mistakes 9:16 let's talk about what we said wrong we should make mention that we are fans but we might not be subject matter experts 9:23 if they haven't figured it out already Yes spyer Rico I would say is not his given name and Rocky has name spoil 9:30 alert was mentioned here's a little bit trivia going going further ahead in Rocky 5 oh Robert was his given name 9:37 it's never mentioned why he took the name Rocky but we know that he's a huge Rocky Marci Marci Marciano that's right 9:44 thank you fan uh I was I was afraid to pronunciate that because I knew when that was coming Rocky Marciano fan he's 9:51 dead he is dead yeah you don't need to be afraid of him anymore okay that's true and who is a real life boxer so 9:57 they they would they implemented the so I always found it interesting as a as a young viewer back before Google when I 10:04 was a young kid that the rocky character also had the name it actually kind of confused me as a kid that the rocky 10:10 character had the rocky name of a real Rocky or boxer named Rocky so it's kind of confusing but I guess within the the 10:17 universe of the movie maybe he emulated and took that name on himself but it's never mentioned no I think that's what 10:22 you get from it we haven't talked a little bit about the the opening thing oh sorry of Jesus being there I think 10:29 he's Catholic but you have the the birth the death and the resurrection oh okay 10:35 of the character of the character so I don't think it was like we we going to I I think there where do we catch him as a 10:42 character right now near death death I think he's deated he's defeated he's defeated he's like a he's down he's down 10:49 he's like a Bruce Springsteen song down on his luck ready to Mak Sly happen yeah I like that I like the idea that we 10:55 don't see his birth per se we'll see obviously his rebirth his am his 11:00 ambition his uh lot in life is he's just going through the motions what I liked about this opening scene was of course 11:07 the grungy it's not glamorous uh it's literally almost barbaric in the way a 11:14 street fight with gloves in the ring you got people cat calling from the audience you have garbage being thrown in the 11:20 ring mid-match I like the idea that bets were being made mid-match like a guy came up to him his Corner said hey do 11:25 you think you're going to win this next round cuz I got money on this or I got money like you know do you want to do you want to knock this guy out now so I 11:31 can make extra money so it's just the whole operation is a little bit seedy yeah and that's his career right this is 11:39 it this is his career so the fight goes on and we see a little bit of spark uh do you recall why the spark or how he 11:45 how he ended the match uh no I don't got the headbutt got the dirty so this shows 11:50 a little bit of a dirty fighting in the rain that he got the headbutt from Spider Rico and then the uh what we see 11:56 in the future that kind of that Rocky muscle and kind of uh Manpower Beast got kicked just a little bit as he pummeled 12:03 spyer Rico to the canvas all right so after the fight was over he goes into the locker and I found this interesting 12:09 that uh I wanted to take note of what they made uh $17 went to the loser after 12:15 the locker fee and what have you and then $40 went to Rocky the winner of that fight and it seems like he was only 12:20 going to make this every two weeks that's about $175 in today's money so he's making 12:26 about $175 or $350 every weeks you got to supplement your income then he did 12:32 and he did it as a lone shark collector loan collector Lo shark's the person 12:39 that loans it out Gazo Gazo great secondary character Gazo you know that guy just loved playing Gazo he loved 12:46 playing goo he just can tell he just reveled in it and I think he had a stint and maybe The Godfather so the same 12:53 school of movies the same type of the mafia 1970s movies but that you know 12:59 know it's almost the character within the character and he probably had to be very he didn't have to be much didn't have to change much of himself probably 13:05 to be Gazo the way he spoke oh probably not Rocky's now uh leaving the uh 13:11 leaving the match mhm walking home and he passes some singers I think a lot of 13:16 fans know the take me back take me back well I've been told by 13:25 that's the longest we ever sung together oh well people and they all seem to take 13:32 me back okay so I cannot sing and uh you're on your own Frank Salone Jor was 13:38 one of the men standing on the street corner uh singing that song in fact the lead vocalist was Frank St is I'm 99% 13:45 sure it's Frank Stallone Jr uh standing on the street corner singing and uh 13:50 Rocky says hey you guys are getting better every year so kind of a little bit of background these guys are like a fixture yes which which which I find 13:57 interesting I wonder when it ended you know so it's been going on for at least 14:03 a few years for Rocky to make the comment hey you guys sound better every year but there would have been a year 14:09 that it ended oh yeah maybe they're still there maybe there's like that one one guy yeah 14:16 they they'd be fairly old at this point but uh yeah they're still taking me 14:21 back and uh now we enter uh Stallone's apartment yes a 14:28 little bit uh well I guess we'll talk about when we get to Rocky 3 but the this is for real Rocky nerd when I 14:36 keep saying that forgive me I'm going to probably say solone rocky throw but well he's it's the same it's the same it's 14:43 the same when uh Rocky gave his gift to Adrian her birthday gift I think it was her anniversary birthday gift uh on 14:50 their bed and it was jewelry or something and he went and she sang with 14:56 him very awkwardly it's a very awkward scene it's one of the most awkward scenes in the Rocky series when well that's one of the great things about 15:02 Adrian is the awkwardness she just she embodied it very well and so she's 15:09 going and she messed up the and then Rocky's like no no no it's almost like 15:17 it's a weird like imitating life art art like we as an audience know the song from the movies but the character Rocky 15:24 knows the tune from the streets it's so it's such a a tune that he's heard for so many years Street Corner that he 15:29 actually implemented into his personal life well yeah it's it's part of him right and I think it also shows like 15:35 he's you know the street like all that's that's part of me what what I liked about that of introducing the character 15:41 of him winning the fight going home to his tiny apartment living by himself is that everybody in the neighborhood likes 15:47 him yeah he's a fixture he's he's also fixture but he's got nobody correct it's 15:53 it's a very lonely existence yeah he's lonely is yeah I wouldn't even say he 16:00 was so much he's probably at peace I think almost with his loneliness in the 16:06 sense like I don't think he tries to um and I say lonely I don't mean in 16:11 a pathetic but he's not singing on the street corner with the guys yeah I think it's the part of I think anybody's life 16:20 where you're putting one foot in front of the other and trying to make the best of it we should mention his age was it 16:25 30 30 30 yeah and that was actually Stallone's age when he was F so we mentioned before Rocky and 16:31 Stallone are kind of this the same person obviously Rocky wrote the film Stallone wrote the film yeah St 16:38 Stallone yeah Rocky wrote this biography about F Stallone about being down andout 16:44 actor and he yeah you know he was a down out actor no I know I know I know so 16:50 let's actually talk about that because talking about Stallone's career at this point at this point reflects the rocky 16:58 character on imdb.com his first film credit there 17:04 okay is the party at K and studs studs was it a birthday 17:11 party well I think they were wearing birthday suits 17:17 touche and then he uh well let's talk more about that film you know I've seen 17:22 every film I hope this more the sentence 17:29 yeah don't don't edit it out because there's dot dot dot I've seen every film of Mr 17:38 BB Mr stallon but I have not seen party of Kitt STS though I have uh read the 17:44 Snopes the synopsis by the way oh sure please do kitty and stud are lovers I hope so they enjoy a robust sex life oh 17:52 wow which include a flatio and light SNM 17:57 specifically stud sted by the way is the Rocky's character's them 18:05 St again he's one of the same to be St Stallone's character's name belt whipping uh 18:11 Kitty three women come over for a party and stud Services them one after the 18:18 other yes and we should just make note it's um for those please I hope we haven't lost halfer audience there again 18:24 or even can't divide one he can't divide one by yeah uh because somebody has one 18:30 ear on one ear off so uh the film is what I say it I Almost Say by today's 18:37 standards okay of uh your your average HBO show or whatever it's it be quite 18:43 tame don't let the uh I haven't seen it I don't plan on seeing it doesn't interest me uh but that being said for 18:48 the level of what's uh take it for what it's worth uh he but he says Mr Salone 18:54 has says today that he laughs at such a but that's where he was he was so 19:00 desperate and so poor that he was basically selling himself for a film to 19:05 LIT I think it was literally $250 I believe he got paid and today's money 19:11 and today's money wow yeah if if you're that poor ,000,000 that's a little bit 19:17 history there so we go on to his so he moved on up he's c a few movies in the same year at least that was released 19:22 which is lovers and other strangers he was a wedding guest uncredited wow and then he was a party guest in pigeons 19:29 he probably wore the same suit oh yeah and then no place to hide he played a character named Jerry Savage wow 19:35 actually so yes is that his other than stud is that his first name that's his first uh role there I would recommend I 19:42 have done this it's kind of fun to go to YouTube uh ENT fans of Stallone have 19:47 clipped out his segments in these little roles of these movies it's kind of fun to watch his early uh side why don't we 19:53 post some of these on the our Facebook page yeah I know one for sure that I've seen is it's coming up uh bananas it's a 19:59 Woody Allen film he played a was bigger role cuz I think he had a little bit of a speaking part and he mugs or thugs 20:06 Woody Allen's character which I think is great so we're we're not going to go 20:12 into detail of all the movies we got the idea small bit Parts bit parts so no 20:17 place to hide bananas Clute the Lords of flat bush Okay well this is an interesting one because he actually had 20:23 a hand in right in this one oh okay uh so a group of kids in Brooklyn form a gang From This Moment On they do 20:30 everything together this makes things easier but at the same time they have to face new problems mhm and uh The Fawns 20:38 is in this one with them Henry oh wow yeah there's Henry Winkler yeah a little bit who I love how could you not like uh 20:46 Jumping the Shark hler Jumping the Shark yes and then the prisoner of Second Avenue uh Capone Death Race 2000 he 20:55 played a baddie he played a bad guy in that one then and a few other things he's in coj Jack little bit rolls so 21:02 what I find amazing is by the time he gets to writing Rocky he only had $70 in his bank account yeah so well yeah 21:08 there's I mentioned all those rules but those is just a few hundred between six years so he's a 21:15 starving actor yeah he's he's starving that 0% body fat is he didn't have to 21:20 lose a lot of weight probably by the time he to take special pills or anything when he wrote Rocky uh he 21:26 actually want just play a clip of him explaining it let's do that so 21:33 this is him on Steven colar uh colar step cber and Stallone talking about how 21:40 things got uh rolling for him oh you were struggling you were struggling you were a little bit like Rocky cuz you 21:46 were struggling you didn't have a dime to your name you were offered $300,000 to sell the script to Rocky to have 21:52 somebody else be in the role and you said no it has to be me why was that story so important to you why did you write it you know I just you you have a 22:00 few Crossroads in your life and I just realized that if I was ever going to be 22:05 successful or at least true to my dreams this is the this is the uh part because 22:11 I was always being cast as kind of the heavy I was I was the one that would mug Jack Lemon I mug Woody I was the mugger 22:19 I mug I mug cojacks I was like go get the mugger so I thought okay why don't I take a character who's kind of a Mugger 22:27 a a you know a lone shark but he also has a lot inside that no one has really 22:32 seen before so you combine the two and out came Rocky great interview by the way and tangent I started watching cber 22:39 because we're such big Letterman fans but I I I lost interest in them I couldn't do it IE I I get why people 22:47 like him and I get why coar I'm talking about yeah but I I his style of Comedy 22:52 was just like the daily was it the Daily Show yeah I never watched The Daily Show and I I did a little bit again I get it 22:59 but it's still I I still don't know who stepen coar is in a way and it's a weird yeah I know what you mean even 23:06 though that I never watched the other one but you can tell when someone's being Janny wi like Jimmy Kimmel that's 23:12 who you get right Kimmel's Kimmel Coran's Coran Jimmy Fon is 23:18 whatever they write for him great person great great personality please he's no impersonator oh he's a great 23:24 impersonator he that's his that's his trick of the trade he impersonates late night talk show hosts very well yeah 23:29 yeah he actually firstes his own job very well um but uh yeah I only watched 23:34 Jimmy and Conan and I miss Dave blman may his may his beard grow in peace yeah 23:40 so Stallone was at the end of his rope career-wise 30 like I remember being 23:46 30 it was it was a very transitional time at least emotionally where you feel 23:52 all the things that you haven't achieved uh feeling the capability inside of you as an adult sometimes it sucks to know 24:00 that you haven't really reached your potential yeah uh 30 is a tricky decade 24:05 to start I'm now 40 wow yeah I remember as I watched the 24:10 Rocky movies throughout the years cuz I've watched them multiple times picturing myself at those ages so I 24:16 remember being 30 and then watching Rocky thinking me as an individual could 24:21 I do and you know both what Stallone did at this time and just trying to put myself in his shoes and at this time I 24:26 already had a family had kids and so it's an interesting uh it's interesting Journey when you be when you start reaching the ages of your Idols 24:33 that you grew up with and start seeing you how would I look on screen like he's 30 and I'm 30 boy if if I was casting 24:40 that role I don't I don't think I would I would make the Spider Rico casting yeah 30 is an interesting age especially 24:46 for an actor I think uh especially with today's focus on Youth and Beauty 30 is 24:51 like a dinosaur he do really have either a 30 he's no longer a youth you know 24:57 he's got a unique look to him and uh I'm uh look I'm a let me just sa this for the 25:03 record are you coming out as a heterosexual I'm coming out as a heterosexual uh but that being said uh 25:09 son's I find him I find him in his own uniqueness a handsome man uh and 25:15 especially in this Rocky film now you know seen him at 30 that he seems youth youthful compared to his you know age of 25:22 69 and I hope I look as good as 69 but he doesn't have the teen mat name no 25:28 look oh he's no what the Chris hensworth and the that's supp who was a te back 25:34 then in the 70s a Donnie Osman well that they should make note of this when he brought the script to the producers that 25:41 he wrote and let's just most of you know the story so we don't want to dwell in too much I guess but for those that don't know it's a really good story that 25:46 we played the clip they had you know the young actors were Bert Reynolds Ry O'Neal I think so these guys were in 25:53 their 30s but they were the young kind of the sex symbols of the time I don't really know much more who would have been he mentioned a few other names I 25:59 just didn't recognize who they were but I can imagine him coming in he probably didn't fit that aesthetic M he's 26:06 short than probably Bert Reynolds uh so he has a shorter a shorter physique mhm 26:12 and kind of a goofy face and those who don't know that slur that he has in the uh the lip was when he was born they had 26:19 a drunk doctor used forceps on his head to pull him out and it pulled the nerve 26:25 in his face and so that was nerve damage is what he has to his face right now which has become his unique signature 26:31 look I guess you could say mhm like Harrison Ford has that scar on his chin Y and uh I don't think he got that Scar 26:38 from birth though that's a pretty rough birth that's a rough birth he wrote the script 26:44 they offered him a lot of money uh the amount always seems to change but it's anywhere from 00 to 26:49 $350,000 uh and he said no I really want to do this this is my last TRW so really it's quite the story of how the movie 26:56 came to be is its own Underdog Story mhm and then of course we know spoil alert 27:02 that it won best piture the following year so the Underdog Story became an under under Underdog Story which became 27:09 an underdog film became an underdog the award season and it ended up winning best pitcher best director best editing 27:17 and Mr Stallone won or sorry was nominated for best actor I think all the categories had nominations I think Bert 27:23 young was oh nominated Bill KY Bill KY was nominated for music 27:29 uh Tia Shire was nominated for supporting actress so I think the whole 27:34 it was one of those ones where just swept the awards got a lot of accolades and uh yeah good job on job well done of 27:41 course that catapulted his career which we'll get into later he was now a household name obviously MH well one 27:46 thing I want to say about there being all the sequels there could have been you know twice as many it's such a great 27:53 character that you want to see how his life continues yeah and I agree it it's 27:59 funny how sequels are not so much now but back when these were being made no 28:04 sequels there was yeah sequels were sced scoffed at or they had to be the holy 28:11 Grails like the Indiana Jones Trilogy Star Wars trilogy The Star Trek movies 28:17 um they weren't really scoffed at they were they were looked at as franchises the Rocky movies were by 28:24 critics and even quote unquote haters of the day they looked at the rocky sequels 28:29 as laughable it's a weird concept to me but nowadays it's like that's what everyone is they're 28:36 hoping every film that's made every film that's made they're they're hoping please be sequel worthy make enough 28:43 money for us to keep making money off this gravy train and there's a lot of failed films that I I can't think of any 28:50 top of my head that you know that they wanted it so it's just interesting to look how the times have changed that and 28:56 I remember reading like in Mad Magazine uh they would make fun of it Rocky part 29:02 678 and it shows them in a wheelchair with an IV and uh those who have seen Creed might get a kick out of that 29:08 because spoil alert I won't say anything because that's a fairly new movie so there's maybe a little bit of a nod to 29:15 that idea of the aging process but they handle it so well that's realism that's what that's why he was nominated for an 29:22 Oscar yes he was nominated and may say robbed again but pardon me we're in his apartment now that's where we are 29:28 yeah we're in his apartment so the setup's there so what's happened is he's 29:34 fought his victory was 40 bucks yep you know the neighbor that hood that he's in 29:40 the neighborhood that he's in he's kind of a fixture people know his name seems well liked when he gets to his apartment 29:45 he's got his pets cuff and Link his Turtles and M dick the Goldfish the humor okay this brings up the humor yes 29:52 Stallone's got a slick sense of humor it's not um in your face like a 29:59 Vince B neon lesy neelson Naked Gun movies that type of like you'll fall 30:06 downstairs OJ Simpson uh oh yeah that guy's a real card he 30:13 what he a real cut up yeah he he slay at those jokes but uh he was actually quite 30:20 funny the they say what you want about his personal life he was a funny thing and and the rocky character in 30:27 those movies did become known for their the jokes and there's there's so many and as I watched this again for the for 30:33 the MTH time today I thought I was going to try writing down the jokes it's just they almost came too fast and furious 30:39 the on liners uh like when Mickey says to him and he goes you man humor the old man humor he was old man humor before yeah he was in fact 31:11 that his character in the movie as we'll we'll get to creates or as he likes to call it he invents he refers to 31:18 inventions three times in the movie and one of them is the the jokes he he calls them his inventions he refers to them I 31:25 invented that joke yesterday so he doesn't use the word create or come up with it's invent which I thought was I 31:32 don't know if it's a it's clever a clever way of coming up with a thought of well I think that is a good Testament 31:38 to Stallone as a writer for to come up those things like he does in the movie I'm pretty sure it's this one uh what 31:45 called a Portman 2 which is two words that come together right that shouldn't be together so it's not a compound word 31:52 right when Paulie says insem matically that's a great line that's a great line 31:58 because to come up with that you either got to be brilliant which which I won't 32:04 say that he is or isn't but it probably is when it comes to screenwriting let's say yeah but he he would have to in my 32:10 my head you'd have to know somebody who uses those words so if I were to talk to Salone i' would say who was Paulie right 32:20 it's a great question who was Paulie cuz you know those guys that a know it all 32:25 bum who can't really say anything well like myself but but yeah to put in a port Man 32:33 2 of nematically cuz you know that's going to come off usually from somebody who's 32:40 trying to sound smarter than they are or or not or whatever but just it helped 32:46 paint Paulie as a person absolutely it's a it's a great uh a great what you call it again what you it's called the port 32:52 Man 2 I'm probably pronouncing it wrong because like any reader I know what it 32:58 looks like that's one word yeah Oh I thought you saying Port man too like Port as in I'm in the Navy left man and 33:05 then the numeral two so left man two okay all right yeah Port Man 33:11 2 so uh p o r uh t m a n t e Au U okay Port Man 2 oh 33:20 okay what I liked about the uh the apartment uh interaction was we see him 33:26 practicing with turtle food okay yeah and at that when you're watching it for the first time you're like what's he 33:32 doing you know so I like those things in movies where you just have to go with the journey uh you if you're sitting 33:39 with somebody who's annoying they say why is he why is he talking about turtle food why is he talking to well we'll get 33:45 there you know and it happens fairly soon after but I like the idea that he said this turtle food had more flies 33:50 than MTH what I thought was interesting like and I know I don't think he really 33:56 counted you know the the fly to moth ratio but but he wanted a reason to tell 34:03 a joke yes later that we find out but during that scene though was really cool 34:08 that he's not doing with a smirk he's not doing it in a joking way he's 34:14 actually go this turtle food has more moss and flies and he's stumbling as he's practicing he goes oh who cares so 34:20 he's actually already kind of frustrated and we find out later that he's frustrated because he's coming up with jokes and uh um clever quips to kind of 34:29 break the ice with the girl that he has a crush on and so we're already seeing that he's he's already feeling 34:34 frustrated Yeah by his uh uh what do you when you pursue a girl you're Romancing 34:40 her you're yeah you're Romancing trying to woo her wo her and so he's always starting to feel frustrated with that 34:45 and then he looks at his photos in the mirror which are real photos of him he's 34:50 got the mirror he got the picture of him as you said later was 8 years old probably picture of him his high school his parents were there and so I find he 34:58 has photos of himself in the mirror maybe he's looking at what he used to be 35:03 you know what you know he seems obviously very sad that the child in that photo yeah if you saw the man in 35:10 the mirror might have been disappointed where his life is at this point and who hasn't felt that that's why it resonates 35:16 who hasn't felt that or you look at you in the mirror and you don't recognize who you are you don't would your 35:22 12-year-old self yeah be happy really this is where this is where you put me speaking of 35:28 once he said that I just had a flashback do you remember Mom and Dad's stereo it 35:33 had a silver one yeah had a microphone to it yeah yeah you remember playing around with that with the 35:39 microphone anyways here we are 30 thinking about anything else but 36:31 about a half hour into the film Rocky is looking at pictures and clippings on the wall right which where we are now yeah 36:38 and there's a sound of a steam locomotive uh coming up to speed along with the sound of a steam whistle 36:45 diesels had long since supplanted steam in Philadelphia and most of the country by 1976 wow that is a pickup isn't that 36:54 like you know when you see those those train Fanatics I'm in a trains sure they would know so they're going to listen to 36:59 that like oh hold on SC this is 1976 it's diesel not steam interesting 37:05 so the sound effects guys were a little bit behind yeah they they were behind they were behind the curve there well 37:12 you know it's a Cutting Edge um technology there the the diesel trains that's interesting interesting pickup 37:18 and that kudos to that person who found that flub another flub is in an early scene Adrian Rock here they're talking 37:24 on A Street in South Philly while an elevated train passes in the 37:30 background there are no elevated trains in South Philly all right so they must 37:35 have filmed some parts of Philadelphia and some not in Philadelphia we know a lot of the majority of the film was in Philadelphia I'd have to look 37:45 Google but originally they wanted to do all of it in LA I understand that and 37:50 because obviously that's where the studios are but they're like no we this is a Philadelphia movie and we want to 37:55 film the majority of it in Philadelphia with the landmarks and they used them throughout the film we'll get to those 38:01 of course the big one later The Landmark that everyone's familiar with Philadelphia actually just became that 38:06 heart of that of that uh film and the people in Philadelphia love their Rocky 38:12 uh oh absolutely AB can you imagine if it was we're we're from Victoria Canada 38:17 can you imagine if we had an icon like that that'd be that'd be great well you know depending on how this podcast goes 38:24 we might have statues of of us sitting down talking on a wow we could be wouldn't that be 38:32 interesting that we become our own statues because of a character who had a statue who had a statue yeah wow another 38:39 uh kind of flub is or goof is Rocky who supposed to be left-handed uses his 38:44 right hand to write down info on collections he's supposed to make in two scenes and turn to dial on combination 38:51 lock the beginning of the movie well he might have been amuous and then when it came to boxing yeah maybe 38:57 that was his thing and yeah to keep his uh his physical self you know Tip Top 39:04 Got to practice on both I can't believe and all the times I've viewed that I've never and I've seen that scene a 39:10 thousand times the locker scene's a great scene mhm he manipulates everything with his right hand interesting however but you did bring up 39:16 a point just because he's a southpaw fighter right doesn't mean he's okay even Salone was infam infamously 42:16 asked an interview what not a long time ago but eight years ago when he was actually promoting Rambo 4 he was asked 42:22 to rate the Rocky movies at the time 1 through 10 he gave Rocky five a zero and 42:27 I think he was catering maybe to his own fan base saying yeah I hate it too I mean okay there's a ramble four yeah he 42:34 was promote yeah Rambo 4 Ra was a Rambo 48 years ago yeah it 42:40 was like 2008 2006 there was not are you're talking about Expendables no Rambo 4 20 it's called Rambo and he was 42:47 in it syester Stallone yeah yes he played John J 42:53 ramble what he was like the Burmese he fought the eight years ago cuz I think I think 43:00 Rocky was 2006 babo and ramble was 2008 ramble 43:07 4 20088 is this called a Rambo come on you have't you missed 43:14 it okay in my defense I got married in 2008 so your 43:20 life was a whirlwind what I missed the Rambo I can't believe it okay well I'm going to be walk 43:27 watching this be prepared it's violent it's brutal he went for the full it's a 43:32 short film it's basically yeah it's basically like a 75 minute good oldfashioned 1980s wow 43:38 7.1 um what's the rating rating at 7.1 yeah fans loved it I mean fans love the 43:44 uh kind of the back to the80s the same reason why fans love the 43:50 brutality of ramble 4 they hated the non- brutality of Expendables 3 if that makes sense so they they they definitely 43:55 want to see Rambo or they call Stallone rabo yeah they definitely want to see 44:00 Stallone when he's in the action films to uh to not be soft about it yeah yeah 44:06 of course of course wow that's interesting I I'm sorry what were you saying I was I couldn't focus on what 44:11 you're were saying because I could believe that I missed a Rambo oh we're talking about Rocky 5 and he gave it a 44:17 zero okay and let me just say this about Rocky 5 I'm sure we'll get into it later but let me just say it it probably is my 44:24 least favorite because like most people he fought outside the ring the street 44:30 fight happened outside the ring and for whatever reason as a fan and as fans I 44:35 think that movie if it would be an interesting alternate universe scenario 44:41 that if Stallone at that moment decided sorry Adrian I'm going back in the ring 44:46 this guy betrayed me betrayed Mickey's training betrayed my training M I basically got to show this Punk kid 44:52 who's boss you know student meets teacher in the ring mhm and you gives 44:57 the money to charity yeah yeah so even though he gets the money that the promotion was going to give him and he 45:02 fights Tomy the gun it just levels him in like one round two rounds even that's 45:07 it I think the movie would not be laed as horrible I think it I think everyone was on board with the movie with him 45:14 losing everything with him training the project which I think everyone really kind of enjoyed and I think what 45:19 happened was is everyone knew this guy's going to go greedy he's going to turn his back on Rocky you don't turn your 45:25 back on Rocky and Salone was in very good physical fitness back then this is the Cliffhanger days oh yeah he was the 45:32 idea of him in a ring with a shirt off and Trunks I think if he was in the ring and just said dude why you it's kind of 45:38 like why' you do this you could have been somebody but while he's doing that it pained him to fight him but he fought 45:44 him to teach him the lesson of you you could have been me but now you're like a Clubber Lang type character and then I 45:50 think if it ended like that and then he won the love back of his son and his son was in the corner with him mhm I 45:57 guarantee you people would not be complaining about Rocky fight it was the ending and it was the street fight that 46:02 made everyone go a yeah anyway that's my experience okay so my least favorite but 46:09 not my least favorite okay but my least favorite because of the ending okay well what's your least favorite then well 46:15 Rocky [Laughter] 46:24 five but I hate I hate just okay just because it's your least favorite it 46:30 doesn't mean it's a horrible movie no but people that think people hate it I I I I give it like an eight out of 10 up 46:36 until he gets him on the street he should have gone on the street and said no we're not going to fight here we will fight in the ring only in the ring just 46:42 like the promoter was saying mhm let's do this in the ring that was the one good thing that what do you call that 46:48 guy Don King type promoter yeah that's the one good thing that he actually said in the whole movie was this should be handled in the ring he was right 46:55 ironically he was right so anyways we'll get to that later but uh there you go there's a 47:01 segue into the future against spoiler alert so you gave it a eight where the 47:07 general public and probably all the list here five five five out of 10 yeah which 47:12 isn't that bad considering how much it's hated by fans but again I I guarantee you that five would be probably a seven 47:19 or eight if the if the movie ended in the ring well the expectations are so high I if that was like a one time movie 47:27 of course you would have to build the characters and all that which you don't have to do in sequels I think it would have more than yeah if it was five but 47:35 it's it's being judged according to the Rockies to the other Rockies what they what the fans expected not a standalone 47:41 a ring fight I guarantee you so yeah if it was the only Rocky movie ever made for whatever reason at that time that's 47:47 an interesting career choice for this Mr alone mhm and then they would have been like ah probably six and a half yeah 47:54 okay well the original Rocky uh hasn't an eight um I think eight is kind of 48:00 harsh quite frankly I I think it's a 10 it's a 10 I'll tell you why it's an 48:05 eight because these these there's people who give it one yeah the haters they're going to go 48:13 I hate Stallone I hate Rocky I hate everything that stone does I hate the overhype of Rocky so I guarantee you 48:18 that bell curve down to the you're going to have On's and 10 battling it out okay we need to get a guest uh on the show 48:25 who is a rocky hater or alone hater there can't be anybody else there has to 48:30 be there has to be I kind of want to mention that the budget for the movie estimated was uh uh 960,000 48:37 and the gross was 117 uh plus million so definitely I'm 48:44 not good at math here but it definitely doubled yeah yeah it doubled the a few 48:51 times and if we do today's again inflation I know you can go to Box Office Mojo whatever does the uh 48:58 inflation in today's uh say that for another day maybe but what uh Sweden does which I wish the 49:04 rest of the world uh does it does admissions how many people saw the movie huh opposed to the inflation ticket sold 49:12 ticket sold so in Sweden there were 68,000 people that saw it good for them 49:17 good for you swedes for those that are interested tickets sold in the United States for Rocky 55 million uh 40,000 49:27 that's a lot of tickets that's impressive considering the population of the states 40 years ago was not the same 49:33 as now 55 million is that right 55 million so 55 million according to boxes 49:39 boxofficemojo.com it's the 77th uh 49:44 alltime attended movie okay uh right after the best years of Our 49:50 Lives never heard of it good stuff and The Rocky Horror Picture Show ironically 49:58 so more people saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show than rocky uh I would say because of the continued screenings they 50:04 do every year perhaps of the don't they do those uh events they PO is is that 50:10 the one they throw popcorn the screen uh and toast as well toast yeah yeah well I think this is a pretty good start for uh 50:17 act one we didn't even get through the whole act we haven't no what have we 50:23 missed we're still in his apartment holy crap so and uh well that's okay though 50:28 we talked about this you know we're we're not beholding to any schedule other than our own okay well let's let's 50:34 uh let's let's talk let's talk a little bit more sure we would like to end it we we haven't even had the infamous meeting 50:40 of Rocky and Adrian in the pet store for the first time okay hold okay let's okay 50:46 for that last time I saw it I was surprised of how unhomely Talia she's a 50:53 pretty woman yeah she is I guess one the things you see the transformation in your mind's eye already so you already 50:58 know what's under of those glasses and hat well when I when I saw the movie I was like a little kid and so for me that was like an old woman as as a little you 51:06 know I like a pre pubescent boy seeing Rocky for the first time you know 51:11 30-year-old woman is that's an old woman well even for us now 51:17 [Laughter] it's well we get to just talk about maybe the end with the store meet okay 51:23 sure because it's actually really kind of an interesting uh layout here so he goes the store the pet store and right 51:28 away we see him enter the speech or enter the uh the conversation with the 51:33 the joke of more Moss of flies yes which I always thought was an 51:40 interesting I think correct me if I'm wrong I think it was more Moss than flies uhuh and he his Turtles weren't 51:48 crazy about the Flies I think and he said because they got stuck in their throat and he had to hit them on the 51:54 back of their shell to get the fly dislodged and so he's saying all this 52:00 really quickly and he asks Adrian so you know what I give them 52:05 shellshock and old man humor is great I love it shell shock yeah and so of 52:11 course Adrian barely B an eye and the uh the boss or the owner of the store says you know you're sh off with the bad 52:16 jokes early today Rocky mhm and so Rocky then goes and looks at the dog in the cage mhm what I like about this scene 52:23 too was there was that dog in the cage which I felt really bad for that dog small cage big dog uh thankfully it's 52:29 just for filming purposes but oh yeah the 70s they were known for animal 52:35 cruelty was not a but so this dog was in this little cage his name was buiss 52:41 Stallone that's his dog mhm and my understanding is is that he had to sell 52:46 butt kiss to have money in his pocket to buy food but when he got the contract for the movie he was able to buy Buck 52:52 kiss back which I thought was interesting to go back I can only imch that conversation you know hey Charlie mhm I sold you that dog my 53:00 dog I I call I wonder what the offer back was if if I can't find the clip and 53:06 put it into this episode we'll definitely put I I have that story okay on YouTube we'll put that on Facebook 53:13 for those that are interested so the one scene I liked out of this uh scene too is when the owner told Adrian to go down 53:19 and clean the kitty litter boxes cuz they're dirty MH at that moment she realized she's so shy Tim she realized 53:25 that she had to come out from behind the counter mhm and walk past Rocky mhm she 53:30 was using the counter as a blocker you know like like when you're given a public talk it's easier to stand behind a Podium than the open she did a quick 53:37 little like oh my goodness I'm going to be exposed so it gives you a little insight to her 53:44 dysfunctional upbringing of some sort I would even I dare say she's if she's not 53:49 physically abused by her brother uh mentally for sure we see that later the the mental abuse that she got uh we 53:56 don't know why they brother and sister living together this age there's no parents are ever mentioned so maybe I 54:02 would assume Paulie's been taking it sounds like Paulie's been taking care of her a long time MH as he sees it MH but 54:09 we'll talk about the uh growing up of Adrian later but right now she's shy 54:15 timid and she's realizing she's got to walk past this guy but I think we've all felt that at some point sure like do you 54:22 ever feel do you ever feel when you know that you're 54:29 walking yeah and you you can't walk natural the hardest part about walking 54:36 is knowing when you're walking it's like I'm now walking and people are watching 54:42 you it's weird how we're wired like that it is weird because I actually when I watch actors mhm I actually think 54:49 walking is probably is one of the hardest things to do as an actor just to walk that natural gate yeah yeah yeah 54:55 she had that moment knew I have to walk past this guy and your arms aren't quite right you kind of yeah so next time you 55:03 guys walk as you're probably walking away from this podcast to go to bed uh picture how you're
