- 2:06I've been thinking, Oh, that's good. What about marriage? Well?
- 2:10Why me? Marriage is the only way to solve a murder now for the
- 2:21case of the Policymakers. Today's adventure starring lown Clock as Nick Carter, brought
- 2:25to you by a new postwar all Dutch plender. It's a beautiful afternoon early
- 2:31in November, and along a section of deserted highway, an open car moves
- 2:36toward the hills in the distance. In the car are Harvey Craig, a
- 2:39candidate for the state Senate in the coming elections, and Julia Prentiss, is
- 2:44fiancee of the few weeks. Suddenly, another car comes from behind, swears
- 2:49sharply to the right and cuts them off. Easy ju Hey you man,
- 2:57what's the idea? Hey your car officer, Nothing of the kind. Let
- 3:00me get out, Tom, I'll show am showing all that stuff. Are
- 3:04you kidding? This guy's a hit run driver, a killer? Maybe?
- 3:07What's that? When he saw the whole thing mister, that man was on
- 3:10the road. You went right over and you kept on going. We would,
- 3:13Julia, be calm. But I know what they're saying, dear,
- 3:16and I'm going to let them prove it. We're going back, all right,
- 3:34mister, exactly the way you're left him, Exactly the way you and
- 3:37Joe left him. Marphy, don't worry, Julia. That man on the
- 3:40road is a friend of theirs, a co partner. But when I get
- 3:44through with it, he seems to be unconscious. I'll show you how unconscious
- 3:47he is. God, you get up, Get up. The egg is
- 3:51over, are you? What's the matter, Hobby? This man is dead.
- 3:58Well, mister here, he wasn't a friend of ours. You killed
- 4:02him. Cut it out, Pal, I ain't gonna get you out of
- 4:04a manslaughter rap. You murdered him and then you followed me from the city.
- 4:10What's the idea? Who's paying you to do this to me? Pannis?
- 4:15That's a laugh. Why are you and Joe checking this guy for identification?
- 4:18Harvey? We can't let these men get away with this. There must
- 4:21be some way of Hey, let us Tom, I've heard the dead guy's
- 4:26pocket an insurance policy for fifty grand I see taken out by Frank Hudson.
- 4:34That must be the dead guy's name. Never mind that. Look and see
- 4:38who's the beneficiary. Yeah, it's Harvey Craig. What he's the guy that's
- 4:46running for the state senate. Harvey, How does it happened? That's your
- 4:48name? Is don Wait a minute, this guy's Harvey Craig. So that's
- 4:54the angle. Huh, murder? Frame up? It's tough here, honah,
- 5:00Well, Junior, this is it the end of the career. But
- 5:03why you can prove that you don't know that man? That that Frank Hudson.
- 5:09Maybe, but suppose I've been set up for the perfect wrap. Look,
- 5:13Buden, we're a couple of reasonable guys. You pay us the face
- 5:17value of that policy at fifty grand, and we destroy the policy and forget
- 5:21what we saw. M h. We even make the corpse disappear. What
- 5:28are you saying, Harvey, You're not going to do it. I'm afraid
- 5:32I am, Julia, because if I don't, neither of us will live
- 5:36to tell the story. I see what you mean. Let's go back to
- 5:42town. I'll get the money. You go with him, Joan, Yeah,
- 5:45I'll say an take care of the body, and that's the whole Nick.
- 6:00I paid them because I was afraid of what they might do to Julia
- 6:03and me, and because I wanted to get to your office as quickly as
- 6:06possible. Why didn't you go to the police, Harvey, I promised Julia
- 6:10I wouldn't. As a matter of fact, she doesn't even know I'm here.
- 6:13I don't understand it, Harvey. The girls you're engaged too, doesn't
- 6:15want you to go to the police. I know it sounds odd, Patsy,
- 6:18but you and Nick have never met Julia. She's proud. She thinks
- 6:23I'm a sucker for having paid off it, and she thinks the less I
- 6:25talk about it to anyone the better. So you on us to keep mum,
- 6:29Yes, please, Why didn't you raise your voice when you got back
- 6:30to town. I was afraid of the bad publicity nick A murdered charge.
- 6:34However, they wouldn't have dared to make it against you. I wasn't thinking
- 6:41at the time. Nick. I want you to get Tom William. Of
- 6:45course he will hard. I guess that settles that I haven't put the work.
- 6:49Thanks Nick, Oh, here's a description of Joe and Toma. I've
- 6:53written it down good for you. Every little thing helps. I've got to
- 6:58go now, I'll be at my campaign headquarters. Nick, if you did
- 7:00want me, goodbye and good luck poor Harvey. Well, Nick, what
- 7:06do you think? I think this is all the earmarks of a murder racket
- 7:10for blackmail. Wonder whom it's happened to you before? You don't think this
- 7:15was the first time. Oh, it couldn't be. Gang that operates so
- 7:17smooth. He must have had a lot of experience. But where do they
- 7:19get the victims? Well, that's Harvey's typical, I'd say, from Who's
- 7:23who? I mean the victims they killed? Harvey told us you never saw
- 7:28that Frank Hudson before. Yet that man had a policy naming Harvey is a
- 7:31beneficiary. Well, it could have been a phony. It could have been
- 7:35I suppose it wasn't. Who said Hudson up for it? And how why
- 7:40are you clothes any verrio clothes? Would you mind telling me what? Oh?
- 7:45Not at all. I've got an idea that somewhere in the slums or
- 7:48along the waterfront there are operators pulling hopeless prospects out of the gutter and setting
- 7:53them up for the kill. Well, you and I are going to be
- 7:57a couple of prospects. But how much longer? There? We've been to
- 8:13every waterfront dive in town. Were just living around. Well that's the detective
- 8:18business. Oh, go to your eg. We're being watched. Oh oh,
- 8:24why did I ever marry you? You are going to buy me a
- 8:26swell house and fur coats. I was going to be a grand lady.
- 8:31Well it's not when I fault. My plans didn't work out. All I
- 8:33need is one real break, one real break. That's what I've been hearing
- 8:37for years. Well, I wish you'd break your neck off, way off
- 8:41for you? Why did I ever marry you? No place to live,
- 8:43no decent clothes to wear, You never even had a job. Maybe you
- 8:48think jump draw all trees? Maybe they do? And what do you want?
- 8:52Tom's name are in trouble? Browns, Now you have business? He
- 8:56went at. I couldn't help it, Henry, I'm so fat up.
- 9:01Yes, she's gott a right to me. She's hungry, she's got no
- 9:03place, so why don't you go take a walk. Maybe I got a
- 9:07job for you, and for you too, Vadia, don't con on it.
- 9:11I'm over the outside guy. I got a voice, I kind of
- 9:13work on this b I do, friends, and oh, yes, here
- 9:20what it is, Henry? You're going to work and it kills you.
- 9:22Go. Mister Tom, So you've been married for six years and you've done
- 9:39some traveling the Hobo trail, Mister Nicholas. Yes, sometimes, who any
- 9:46man who would subject a woman to such a life? I couldn't help it,
- 9:50mister Bentley, that breaks for all against me. How did you feel
- 9:52about that, Missus Nicholas. Oh, I couldn't leave Henry. H that's
- 9:56devotion. Well, I need to in my house naturally. You've never been
- 10:01a butler, mister Nicholas. No, sir, No, sir, that's
- 10:07better. I see you learn quickly. You'll keep this place in order,
- 10:11and you'll see that it's dustin. Yes, sir. And now Missus Nicholas,
- 10:15can you sure? I mean yes, sir, mister Bentley. Good.
- 10:20My tastes are very simple. We'll get along, Tom. These people
- 10:24are going to stay in the room on the fourth floor. Ask Joe to
- 10:28prepare it for them. Do we go with it? No? No,
- 10:33you wait here. If you're wondering about my two men, Tom and Joe,
- 10:39they live here with me. I prefer them to dog. No,
- 10:45we weren't wondering, mister Belin good you'll make the idea of Butler. Now
- 10:50there's one matter that must be settled before we begin our relationship. Yeah,
- 10:56as you see, I have many valuables in his house, rare paintings,
- 11:01antique vases, so forth. Oh you don't think we steal from you,
- 11:05mister Bentley. It's happened before my dear lady, and so I have one
- 11:11strict policy in this establishment. All my employees must be bunded. Ah,
- 11:18I see do you object, mister Nicholas. Oh no, no, no,
- 11:22all right with me, sir. Yes, I'll have a phorms here
- 11:26sometime tomorrow morning. In the meantime, excuse me, miss Bentley. What
- 11:31is it? Tom? I chose on his way up the room. You
- 11:35want me to you don't want to go? Oh they'll find it the fourth
- 11:37floor. Mister Nicholas then turned to the left. Yes, sir, come
- 11:41along, Mabel. Yes, I didn't do so bad, did I,
- 11:46mister Bentley? Two instead of one? Yeah? When only you give them
- 11:52the insurance business. We don't know anything about them. Tom, A couple
- 11:56of unlocked bombs. I saw. I wonder the lady had clean fingernails.
- 12:11Think, I don't get it. What surety company would bonded darrelict or a
- 12:16couple of derrelics. Petsy, We're not going to be bonded. But mister
- 12:18Bentley saw me a gig for the last minute switch. Oh, from bonding
- 12:24to insurance. Uh huh. Then when mister Bentley starts talking about insurance,
- 12:28Yes, Patsy, I think I'll let some air into this room. But
- 12:31Nick, in the Frank Hudson policy Harvey told us about Bentley, wasn't the
- 12:35beneficiary. You're not in your toaster, like Patsy. I'm only trying to
- 12:39put myself in the place of an intended victim. Don't cry. But I
- 12:43become suspicious of a policy that didn't make Bentley the beneficiary. Windows sealed shut,
- 12:50It's what sealed. It's glass barrier to the outside. But why just
- 12:56in case someone should want to yell for help? Oh, could I answer
- 12:58your question? It's about the policy. You mean the victims were forced.
- 13:03They were. They became suspicious of Bentley, but as long as they believed
- 13:07in him as a good samaritan who could do no wrong, even when he
- 13:11made someone else the beneficiary. Even then, remember the people who signed those
- 13:15policies were hungry, down and out. Bentley was giving them. Come in
- 13:20of course, yes, sir, thank you. You stay here at the
- 13:22door times you joel all right, mister Bentley. Well, my dear mister
- 13:28and Missus Nicholas, don't look so surprised. It's an old custom of mine
- 13:31when I'm welcoming you servants. I've brought a bottle of wine for us,
- 13:37for me too, a rare sparkling bagundy. I want you to feel it
- 13:41home. Permit me to do the honors for you, Missus Nicholas. Thank
- 13:50you sir, for you, mister Nicholas, and now one for me.
- 14:03Raise your glasses please, a toast to my new servants, mister and Missus
- 14:09Nicholas better known as Nick Carter. Did I startle you, miss boone?
- 14:18How did you find out about it? My underground espionie system? I see?
- 14:26Well, what are you going to do with us? Now? Kill
- 14:28you both, of course, but not until I've made arrangements to convert you
- 14:33into cash, and that my friends will be very soon. Soul Bentley has
- 14:45found out Nick and Patsy, and behind him are two men with guns.
- 14:48We'll see what happens in just a moment. Now back to the case of
- 14:58the policymakers. Today's adventure with Nick Carter, brought to you by a new
- 15:01postwar all Dutch blunter. It is several hours later and in Bentley's luxurious library.
- 15:07Nick and Patsy are sitting near the desk, surrounded by Tom, Joel
- 15:13and Bentley as for all Phil dot and ready for the signature. Well,
- 15:20thank you, Tom. Give mister Carter his your application for insurance. Mister
- 15:26Carter, you're asking for a quarter of a million. Don't you rate me
- 15:28too high? Bentley? Who No, not too high for a man of
- 15:31your reputation and connections. Here's your application system. Yes, forgive us,
- 15:39miss Bowen, but we think you're worth only one hundred thousand dollars. I'm
- 15:43not worth anything to you. You'll let me be the judge of that wanter.
- 15:46Wow, So Jackson Phillips is going to be my beneficiary? Why not?
- 15:52He's our city's leading banker. Now, miss Bowen, your beneficiarity is
- 15:56Mortimer Evans, the department store owner. He knows you quite well personally and
- 16:00by your extensive charge a gun. It will do you a bit of good
- 16:03Dentille, please sign these applications. You're not going to send our friends up
- 16:10for blackmail. To a very harsh word, mister Carter, let me go
- 16:14to work on a mister Bentley. Joe, Joe, Joe, much too
- 16:17temperamental. Well, it's no dice if we don't get their signatures. This
- 16:21ain't like the other jobs we've done. We're shooting for big toe. Now
- 16:23we're gonna have their signatures and their own hand. Right. We'll have them,
- 16:26Joe, but without your methods. What's wrong with my methods? They're
- 16:33much too crude for present company. Oh, I'm sure that mister Carter and
- 16:37miss Bowen will prefer my more scientific methods of persuasion. Darn room like a
- 16:56vault top floor board. They were going to torus Nick if we hadn't signed.
- 17:02Listen, Patsy, I'll let you win in a secret. What aren't
- 17:04you all the time when we're going to sign those applications you did? Of
- 17:08course, we had to sign them to get the goods on Bentley in this
- 17:11game? Okase without them? Oh I see that now, mate. Let's
- 17:15see two o'clock. Time to get out of this room and down to the
- 17:19library safe. Oh, that's going to be easy. What with that window
- 17:22sealing. With Joe popped in the hole just outside, it can be done.
- 17:26Bentley and Tom ought to be asleep by now, I suppose they are.
- 17:30We still can't get out. Take off your shoe? What your shoe?
- 17:33Take it off? We got a job for it, all right.
- 17:37Now what do I do? Hobble around, smack the heel of your shoe
- 17:41against that window pane and break it. Now. Look, Nick, I'd
- 17:45like to get some air too, But now I want to plant myself behind
- 17:48this door on that chair you've got there, no under it? Ready to
- 17:52bring it down on Joe's head? Okay, go ahead? Ay, what's
- 18:04the idea of breaking it? Well, Betsy, see what I mean?
- 18:11Oh? You're full of tricks tonight, aren't you full of them? Now
- 18:14let's get down to the library and take out some reading matter. Nick,
- 18:29can't you get it open? I don't know. It's been a long time
- 18:32since I opened a safe without knowing the combination. Why have you got enough
- 18:34light? It's a lucky thing. We found this flashlight in Bentley's desk grower.
- 18:40And look at the size of it. Why it must be ten inches
- 18:42long and it's weighs close to it goes the boat. Now for some quick
- 18:48research, can need help? Just bring the light closer. Yeah, uh,
- 18:55look, Patsy policy blanks a staff of mister Bentley had plans for a
- 19:00future. Didn't he see what's in this drawer? Are there? Nick?
- 19:07The applications we signed? Uh? Yes, here they are. God.
- 19:12Now we'll make a bundle of all this evidence and then lock up the safe
- 19:17just in case. We're not going back upstairs, Nate, of course not.
- 19:21We're phoning the police. That's much better, Dave, that's quiet.
- 19:26Someone's walking outside in the hole. He didn't close the door, Patsay,
- 19:30whi for god? They've seen the flashlight. They won't see us. Let's
- 19:33get behind them. Fell down, turn in the flash Look that's how they
- 19:49craigs. Yes, So what's he doing in this house? He just died?
- 19:56Oh, murdered unless I don't know what I'm talking about. Oh,
- 20:00don't you see it? Betsy? See what this whole dirty business? How
- 20:03did Harvey Crave get to this house? Who brought him? Someone turned the
- 20:06lights on? Oh? You finally figured it out, mister Nick Carter.
- 20:11Who is she? Yeah, Julia Pranis, aren't you. Yes, I
- 20:14brought Harvey here. He shouldn't have told you what happened to us on the
- 20:17road. Yes, you sheldy, we had some wine. Honey, Harvey's
- 20:22glass had poison in it. Oh, hey, where you are, Carter?
- 20:25Mister Bentley wouldn't like me to shoot you? All right, Julia,
- 20:27You've got the heavy artillery. And to think Harvey considered her a friend.
- 20:33So many people do, men, particularly huh Man, with a lot of
- 20:36money. Yes, here Bentley's contact woman. You set up the blackmail victim,
- 20:41and then you're in the car with him when the so called hit and
- 20:42run takes place, of course, at the right place, in the right
- 20:47time. A very important in our business. How did you know we were
- 20:48in this house? We didn't see you. I saw you, miss Bowen,
- 20:52and I recognized mister Carter from his newspaper pictures. A peep hole in
- 20:56the wall of your room upstairs, missus Nicholas. We never had a chance.
- 21:00Let's say you might have had one if you didn't have clean fingernails,
- 21:04clean, not bad habit, miss Bowen. When your life depends on it,
- 21:08bentleyphone me in town. I came, I saw and I couldn't believe
- 21:12my eyes. Well, what happens now, Julia? There's a little room
- 21:17in the cellar i'd like to have you see. Oh it's not much of
- 21:19a room, but it's a cape proof and we want so much to see
- 21:23you again tomorrow, that is when we'll meet you. What time is it,
- 21:37Nick? My watch isn't as luminous as it used to be, but
- 21:41I should say it was about a quarter past one day night or eternity afternoon?
- 21:47Patsy, Hey, you're not losing your nerve, are you? I
- 21:52never felt better in my life. I'll turn on your flashlight and you'll see
- 22:00we've only been down here since last night. Why don't you turn it on?
- 22:07Can't great? So listen, Well, sty'll kill us before they take
- 22:19us out of here. They won't, they care, but they will pay.
- 22:22We've got here to be accident. They can't run a car over us
- 22:26here. They've got to take us out of the house. And once we're
- 22:30on and they opened, this may be a passy. Now listen, don't
- 22:33fight them to carry us out. You go with the lantern, right,
- 22:37Miss Spending. You're next Joe, and don't know your gun with him around?
- 22:42Boys, A good afternoon. Mister Carter and miss Bowen, and Julia
- 22:48told me you were very naught a last man. Oh I hope we didn't
- 22:51put you to any inconvenience. We make the punishment fit the crime. Come
- 22:56here, miss Bowen, I like it where I am. Oh me,
- 22:59we go and have trouble. Julia has an appointment to go driving this afternoon
- 23:03with Mortimer Evans, your beneficiary. You've got to be on the road,
- 23:07Miss Bowen. Nick, his turn will come later another day. We can't
- 23:11do everything at once, you know. Listen, Bentley, you take both
- 23:15of us, so you don't take either of us. Very galant, mister
- 23:18Cutter, Tom, you take Miss Bowen outside. Okay, now you don't,
- 23:26Joe. You heard what Tom said. I'll get anymore. That tap
- 23:33with my gun makes me even for last night. Come along, miss Bowen,
- 23:37you killed him? No, no, my dear, it won't do
- 23:44you a better good to struggle. Julia has an appointment and you must help
- 23:48her. Keep this Now for the conclusion of the case of the Policymakers.
- 24:03Today's adventure with Nick Carter brought to you by a new postwar all Dutch cleanser.
- 24:10It's ten minutes later Patsy fainted and is lying on the sofa in the
- 24:14living room of Bentley's house. Nearby, Bentley and Julia are discussing their plans
- 24:18with Tom and Joe over a road map which is on the table. Now
- 24:22this is the exact point in the road where you're to be, Caddy.
- 24:26We use the same road for a change, mister Butley. Listen to Julia
- 24:30Joe and don't ask so many questions. Mortimer Evans and I will pass that
- 24:34point about half past three. Now what time you have I've got one thirty
- 24:40five, me too, We agree, Well, Lucia's I'm ready to leave
- 24:45the town. I told Mortimer i'd meet him at two o'clock. I'm going
- 24:48to be late. Oh not too late, my dear. Ten of fifteen
- 24:51minutes for one. As charming as you can it. Brother, The only
- 24:55thing I see in you is a bookkeeping item. Frank aunt Joe, Joe,
- 25:00my car out of the garage. Yeah, sure, give me a
- 25:03cigarette. Lution. There are times, Julia, when you behaviors. If
- 25:06you're running this show, I might as well be. You couldn't get along
- 25:10without me. That are other women is well qualified. That's going to cost
- 25:14you fifteen percent more, Darling, what another book keeping item. I was
- 25:18going to talk to you about that later, but since you brought it up.
- 25:21No, look, I want forty five percent from now on. You've
- 25:25been have the twenty five percent I've been getting. Oh wait, no use
- 25:27arguing. I'll tell you that's crazy. Why am I interrupting something? He's
- 25:33got a gun falling on among thieves. Euh. You won't have to worry
- 25:37about percentages anymore. Or maybe you should worry about the percentages because from now
- 25:42and they're all against you. Operator give me police headquarters, Nick, How
- 25:56did you do it? Perhaps it is I came up in the cellar that
- 25:59would Joe walking toward the front door. He went out like a light.
- 26:02Of course I had to hit him, That's not what I mean. Then
- 26:04I took his gun and made the grand They were no, no, no,
- 26:07you don't understand. I mean, how did you get out of that
- 26:11cellar room? It was simple. I took the door off its hinges.
- 26:14What with Bentley's flash light? You mean you used that flashlight to unhinge the
- 26:18door? M h. It was heavy enough to drive the pins out of
- 26:21the hinges very neatly. Why but I didn't hear. That's not I'm uff
- 26:25with the noise of my coat. Honest, Nick, when I saw you
- 26:30on the floor unconscious, I thought I wasn't unconscious. Oh no, this
- 26:34is too much. Oh Joe telegraphed that wallop. I saw it coming and
- 26:38I rode with it. The gun caught me in the back of the neck.
- 26:41That's why you're driving the car. Why. I'm all right, Nick,
- 26:48I'm listening. There's no mystery to it, Patsy. I've just got
- 26:51a good, stiff pain in the neck, that's all. Can you tell
- 27:02us something about the story new post war old Dutch Klinder is going to bring
- 27:04us Next week, Nick, well, pop. Next week we're going to
- 27:07meet a young contractor who helped us track a killer by trying to build a
- 27:11garage on an imaginary street. And Nick found the killer by listening to a
- 27:15talking typewriter, talking typewriter imaginary streets. It sounds fascinating. What do you
- 27:21call a story, Nick, I call it the Case of the Missing Streets.
- 27:33Nick Carter Master Detective is presented each week at this time by the Cuttaheat
- 27:37Packing Company. It is produced and directed by Jock McGregor and is copyrighted by
- 27:42Street and Smith Publications, Incorporated. Charlotte Manson is featured as Patsy. Today's
- 27:48script was written by Stedman Coles. Original music is played by Henry Silvern.
- 27:53This program is fictional and any resemblance to actual persons living or dead is purely
- 28:00coincidental. This is Bob Martin saying when minutes count used, you both war
- 28:04Oh, that's Glenson. This is the Mutual Broadcasting Systems welcome back. Well,
- 28:26another entertaining story. Somewhat of an unusual twist here, as you have
- 28:32the criminal revealing to the detective how he caught how she caught him, and
- 28:38that's kind of the opposite of our typical resolution scene. But it's certainly an
- 28:45interesting twist and points out that when you have a reputation as the greatest of
- 28:52all manhunters and you're a celebrity detective, it might not be the best idea
- 28:57in the world to try and go undercover, particularly if your name is Nick
- 29:03Carter and you decide to go under the very clever alias mister Nicholas. And
- 29:07poor Patsy, I wonder how she managed to keep her fingernails cleaned two weeks
- 29:15of walking around in rags in waterfront dives must have been like an obsessive,
- 29:22compulsive thing, I guess, but I will say, whatever Nick Carter is
- 29:26paying Patsy, it's probably not enough. Yeah, it's definitely not enough.
- 29:32Though the beginning a teaser for the story kind of suggests that what a listener
- 29:37emailed in about might be the case, with her delighted at the idea of
- 29:42Nick Carter marrying her, though at this point it's less of a comparison I
- 29:48was made between George Valentine and Brooksy and let George do it more like Ellery
- 29:55Queen and NICKI Porter, which is a bit less obvious and desperate of our
- 30:00relationship. Though we'll beginning to Ellery Queen in just a couple months. I
- 30:04should say, well, that will do it for this week's episode of Nick
- 30:08Carter. Tomorrow, It's gonna be yours truly, Johnny Doller, and then
- 30:14join us next Thursday for another episode of Nick Carter. In the meantime,
