- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. And at the time that I'm
- 0:18recording this, if you are watching the video podcast, you
- 0:22might be like, hey, Brian, you're back in your office, but
- 0:24your office looks a little different.
- 0:26Absolutely. My good friend Rod Dingus
- 0:31repainted my office and I am absolutely in love with how it
- 0:37looks. And my wife was incredibly
- 0:39helpful in helping me like organize my different books and
- 0:45things so that I know, all right, when I need a Bible, here
- 0:49are some of the shelves that I'm going to when I need a book on,
- 0:53you know, some sort of theology thing.
- 0:55I know where those are. There's some leadership ones
- 0:58over there, church revitalization, biographies.
- 1:01And so I have that all set now. And so I'm just incredibly
- 1:05thankful for the hard work and generosity of so many people and
- 1:10helping out with that. So wanted to give a quick shout
- 1:12out right at the beginning, maybe one of these days.
- 1:15I don't know how I do it on on Tabernacle talk, but for the
- 1:19video people, I might do like a little walkthrough of the office
- 1:24at some point, but that's not what we're talking about today.
- 1:26Today we are talking about the book of Isaiah and or I, I could
- 1:32say the book really this would have initially been a scroll.
- 1:36These are a collection of prophecies, of poems, of
- 1:42sermons, of historical conversations and events that
- 1:47took place. And right now we are in Isaiah
- 1:51chapter 21. So we've been walking through,
- 1:54over the past several episodes, God's pronouncement of judgment
- 2:00that is coming on wicked nations who have done wrong to humanity
- 2:06in general, who have done wrong to the southern Kingdom of Judah
- 2:10specifically. And so we've seen God talk about
- 2:13Egypt and Israel. We've seen him talk about Moab
- 2:17and Syria, Babylon, and now in chapter 21 we're coming back to
- 2:24Babylon again, as well as Edom in verse number in verses 11:00
- 2:30and 12:00, and then Arabia in verses 13 through 1617.
- 2:39So this kind of rounds out this section of God's judgments, kind
- 2:46of sort of God's judgments against these surrounding
- 2:49nations. We're going to get back to
- 2:51Jerusalem again, which is what Isaiah started off with in
- 2:55Isaiah chapter one, with God saying you're supposed to be my
- 2:58people, but you are not doing the things that I called my
- 3:02people to do. Instead, you are living in
- 3:04horrible wickedness. And so there needs to be some
- 3:10divine justice that takes place that makes Judah change their
- 3:15ways. And so that's where we're going
- 3:18to come back to next episode. And then there's some judgments
- 3:22against Tyre, which was a coastal, coastal country right
- 3:29next to Israel. And then a specific person,
- 3:34Jebna, sorry, Shebna, that is going to be judged next episode.
- 3:40So just know we've got one more episode of Here's bad things
- 3:46that happen. Here's how you need to change
- 3:47your ways. And then we're going to get into
- 3:50what I've heard some Bible scholars describe as the little
- 3:53apocalypse of Isaiah. And that is think of the Book of
- 3:59Revelation is an apocalypse. It's a revealing, it's kind of
- 4:02the eschatology, last day's end times type thing.
- 4:07And so we're going to look at what Isaiah has to say about the
- 4:11end of this age of human history.
- 4:14And so I'm super excited for that.
- 4:17Let's begin reading in Isaiah chapter 21 a pronouncement
- 4:21concerning the desert by the sea like storms that Passover the
- 4:25Najeev it comes from the desert from the land of terror.
- 4:29A troubling vision is declared to me.
- 4:31The treacherous one acts treacherously and the destroyer
- 4:35destroys advance Elam lay siege you needs.
- 4:39I will put an end to all the groaning.
- 4:42So here there's this prophecy that's coming against Babylon
- 4:46and he says here Elam, that would be one of the the chief
- 4:49cities of the Medo Persian Empire.
- 4:51And then the Medes, which would be a particular people group.
- 4:55You can even hear there in Medo Persian Empire, which would kind
- 4:59of be the dominant world empire after Babylon went off the scene
- 5:06and the Medo Persian Empire hastened that particular them
- 5:11coming off the scene. So here's this prophecy.
- 5:14The Medes and Persians are going to come and to destroy Babylon.
- 5:19And we can read about that certainly in history, and then
- 5:22as well in the book of Daniel. Verse #3 Therefore I am filled
- 5:27with anguish. Pain grips me like the pain of a
- 5:30woman in labor. I'm too perplexed to hear, too
- 5:34dismayed to see. My heart staggers.
- 5:37Horror terrifies me. He has turned my last glimmer of
- 5:41hope into sheer terror. Prepare a table and spread out a
- 5:45carpet. Eat and drink.
- 5:47Rise up, you Princess, and oil the Shields.
- 5:50For the Lord has said to me, go post a lookout.
- 5:53Let him report what he sees when he sees riders, pairs of
- 5:57horsemen, riders on donkeys, riders on camels.
- 6:00He must pay close attention. Then the lookout reported, Lord,
- 6:03I stand on the watchtower all day and I stay at my post all
- 6:07night. Look, riders come, horsemen in
- 6:09pairs. And he answered, saying Babylon
- 6:12has fallen, has fallen. All the images of her gods have
- 6:17been shattered on the ground. So they're here is an end to the
- 6:21idolatry of Babylon. My people who have been crushed
- 6:25on the threshing floor. I have declared to you what I
- 6:29have heard from Yahweh of Heaven's armies, the God of
- 6:33Israel. So to Israel, and specifically
- 6:36to the southern Kingdom of Judah that would be brought into exile
- 6:40by Babylon. God himself would judge Babylon
- 6:43for their unique evils that they had committed.
- 6:47Then there's a prophecy against Edom, which again that's the
- 6:53descendants from Esau, Jacob's older brother.
- 6:58And they, though distantly related to Israel, would often
- 7:04commit atrocities in the way that they treated Israel and
- 7:08Judah raiding parties participating in whenever larger
- 7:14groups like the Assyrians or Babylon, Babylonians would come
- 7:18by, Edom would kind of join in and get some of the spoils as
- 7:23well. And so we learned together in
- 7:26the book of Obadiah about God's kind of longer prophecy against
- 7:32them. But this is what we read in
- 7:34verses 11. And 12A pronouncement concerning
- 7:37Duma 1 calls to me from Sayer. Watchmen, what is left of the
- 7:41night. Watchmen, what is left of the
- 7:44night? The watchman said morning has
- 7:46come, and also night. If you want to ask, ask, come
- 7:50back again. So here there is just this long
- 7:55night, a long time of no blessing, no benefit, strictly
- 8:04over and over and over again into the dark is what was
- 8:09awaiting Edom. And if you want a fuller
- 8:13prophecy against the Edomites, you can go look at our episode
- 8:17on Obadiah. Then in verse #13 here is a
- 8:21prophecy, A pronouncement against Arabia.
- 8:24So this would be South of Judah, where you would have today kind
- 8:28of the United Arab Emirates, that kind of area, says a
- 8:33pronouncement concerning Arabia. In the desert brush you will
- 8:37camp for the night, you caravans of Deadonites bring water for
- 8:42the thirsty. The inhabitants of the land of
- 8:45Tima meet the refugees with food, for they fled from swords,
- 8:49from the drawn sword, from the bow that is strong, and from the
- 8:52stress of battle. For the Lord said this to me.
- 8:55Within one year as a hired worker counts years, all the
- 8:59glory of Kedar will be gone. The remaining Kedarite Archers
- 9:02will be few in number. For Yahweh, the God of Israel
- 9:07has spoken. So even Arabia with a lot of its
- 9:10nomadic tribes, and they were very well known for, and this
- 9:15even extended a little bit into, you know, the, the time of
- 9:20Muhammad. And after that you had a lot of
- 9:22people that were on horseback and a lot of Archers, especially
- 9:26in the desert, as you can kind of see further and further away
- 9:31from you because it's a lot of, you know, kind of more flat
- 9:34ground. You don't have hills or trees or
- 9:38that kind of stuff to hide behind.
- 9:40Archery was a fantastic way to wage warfare and hear what God
- 9:45says is for these people. Also descendants of Abraham by
- 9:48the way, that there would be a breaking of their former.
- 9:55I would hesitate to say straight up military might because of the
- 10:01way that they would engage in, in warfare would be more like
- 10:04raids rather than straight up, you know, army on army combat.
- 10:11But here God says within one year, all the glory of Kedar
- 10:15will be gone. So what in the world do we do
- 10:19with these portions of Scripture?
- 10:21None of us, I don't believe live in Babylon.
- 10:24None of us live in kind of the area that's called Petra now.
- 10:29And you can, I strongly encourage you actually Google
- 10:33Petra, not the music group, though that would be a fine
- 10:36option as well. But Google the place, Petra, and
- 10:41you can see some of the areas in which the Edomites lived and
- 10:47what's that kind of turned into overtime.
- 10:51Super, super cool architecture, much like some of the places
- 10:56that you would see even in New Mexico and Arizona carved into
- 11:00cliffsides. Super cool.
- 11:02So I encourage you to look at that.
- 11:05But for most of us, we're not in these places.
- 11:08So what do we make of this? Especially because, you know,
- 11:12there's been a lot of the ones, a lot of the countries that we
- 11:15have looked at Isaiah's prophecies against.
- 11:18And there's some, you know, indication of, you know, return,
- 11:22repent, follow and worship God. And certainly we can take all of
- 11:28those things with us to these places.
- 11:30But I think one thing that we are called to notice from these
- 11:34chapters or from this chapter and from these countries is this
- 11:38God is serious about sin. He is serious about punishment
- 11:44for sin, and yet he is incredibly patient.
- 11:49We really struggle to hold both of those things as true because
- 11:55if we are dealing with sin often we would say then that means
- 12:00that I need to go right now and confront this person.
- 12:04Like really just lay down the law on them.
- 12:08Now, God has the benefit of being immortal, which can
- 12:13certainly mean that he can take a little bit longer with his
- 12:16time for justice because justice will happen regardless of
- 12:20whether or not it happens in a, you know, 30 to 70 year time
- 12:23span, which is what we're operating in most of the time.
- 12:29But God is patient. And here Babylon deserved the
- 12:33destruction and the evil that would come upon them.
- 12:38They deserved it 100 and 5200 years before it actually
- 12:43happened. And so one of the things that I
- 12:46would encourage you all to think about, even in your life is God.
- 12:50Do I believe that you will deal rightly, that you will be just
- 12:55in the way that you judge those people in my life that right now
- 13:00I would feel really need your justice or your judgment?
- 13:05And am I willing to allow you to work on your timetable and not
- 13:08on mine? Then for our personal behavior,
- 13:12are you willing to be patient in the way that you deal with
- 13:15others, knowing that God is just and so we don't have to, if you
- 13:20will pre condemn people? God already has condemnation
- 13:24waiting for those that refuse Christ, refuse forgiveness,
- 13:29refuse the free offer of life that is found in Him alone.
- 13:32And so may we, while we have time with people, no matter how
- 13:37flawed or broken they may be, may we extend the offer of
- 13:42forgiveness and love and grace from our God to them.
- 13:47That if they will repent and turn to Jesus, they will not
- 13:50experience condemnation, but instead they would become part
- 13:53of God's family. They would be in dwelt by the
- 13:55Holy Spirit and change transformed, sanctified into the
- 14:00image of Christ that we often times waste our time pre
- 14:07condemning people and if you will, they're condemned by us
- 14:13all of their life. And when we don't show the love
- 14:17of Christ or when we as we're told in Romans 2 and verse four,
- 14:20that the kindness of God is intended to lead us to
- 14:23repentance. And when we don't extend
- 14:26kindness to others, then at the end of their life, yes, they get
- 14:31what is truly coming to them. But I wonder how many times we
- 14:35have failed to show the kindness or love or grace or patience of
- 14:39God to others. So I want to challenge you
- 14:42today. Don't love sin.
- 14:43Like get rid of sin. Get rid of idols in your life.
- 14:46Those things that take the place of God, that cause you to
- 14:50disobey God. The things that you put more
- 14:52trust in than God Himself. Get rid of those.
- 14:57Be patient in how you deal with others.
- 14:59Forgive, show grace, love, all that kind of stuff.
- 15:04And then what was the last thing?
- 15:08Oh, and then know that God will bring justice and so we can bank
- 15:13on that and we don't have to feel like we really have to make
- 15:16someone pay in the here and now because God will make sinners
- 15:22pay one day for everyone that says I'm going to pay myself
- 15:26instead of choosing the payment of Christ that will result in my
- 15:31life and forgiveness and flourishing.
- 15:33Thanks for tuning in today. It was a strong bit of a heavier
- 15:37episode, but I hope that it'd be a challenge to you in your life.
- 15:42Next episode, we're picking back up again with Jerusalem and one
- 15:47particular person who out of all the chapters that we've looked
- 15:50at, he's the one guy named by name that gets a unique prophecy
- 15:56against him from the Lord. And so we're going to see why in
- 15:58the world would this guy have earned it, especially in the
- 16:01southern Kingdom of Judah, and look forward to going over that
- 16:03with you. Thank you.
- 16:04Have a great day.
