- 0:00Speaker 1: The music line to more head coach, with us we
- 0:04Speaker 1: get to the cornerbacks. I watched a lot of that
- 0:07Speaker 1: today when you was that drill when you were throwing
- 0:10Speaker 1: passes inside the twenty, trying to score one on one
- 0:14Speaker 1: stuff with the corners trying to cover just.
- 0:17Speaker 2: A red zone one on one, Yeah.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Where you're going receiver versus defensive backs in the red
- 0:21Speaker 3: rill for a cornerback, Yeah, I think one on one
- 0:24Speaker 3: is a tough drill because there's no pass rush, so
- 0:27Speaker 3: the quarterback can just stand back there. The receivers got
- 0:31Speaker 3: the entire work with he's got no help from a
- 0:34Speaker 3: safety linebacker, so it's a really challenging drill.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Do you think that?
- 0:39Speaker 4: And watching that today, I felt like the cornerbacks need
- 0:43Speaker 4: a little help from officials. You got to be able
- 0:47Speaker 4: to put your hands on guys to keep kick control
- 0:49Speaker 4: of them.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I think that's fair.
- 0:51Speaker 4: But is that in college football and no no.
- 0:56Speaker 2: And pro football?
- 0:57Speaker 3: It is that you can't touch him after five yards
- 0:59Speaker 3: and college football they're pretty lenient, you know, as long
- 1:01Speaker 3: as not the ball's not in the air and you're
- 1:03Speaker 3: not grabbing and holding a jersey and restricting their ability
- 1:06Speaker 3: to get up the field. They're going to let you
- 1:09Speaker 3: be a little bit more physical. Makes it a little
- 1:11Speaker 3: bit difficult in games like the Wake Forest game last year,
- 1:14Speaker 3: you know where you know, all of a sudden the
- 1:16Speaker 3: flag comes out or doesn't come out in a situation
- 1:19Speaker 3: where you thought it could so but no, you're a
- 1:22Speaker 3: little you can be a little bit more physical. We
- 1:24Speaker 3: bring officials to several of our practices. Then I asked
- 1:27Speaker 3: the officials when they're there to be very very picky
- 1:29Speaker 3: and the you know, if you would even think about
- 1:33Speaker 3: calling it, throw the flag so we can coach off
- 1:35Speaker 3: of it. So we know what the parameters are and
- 1:37Speaker 3: how far we can take things and are what things
- 1:40Speaker 3: are being emphasized. We haven't had a lot of pass
- 1:43Speaker 3: interference calls, I don't believe, or holding calls, you know,
- 1:47Speaker 3: but you're going to get them when you play aggressive defense.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Right, So tell us about some of the corners, because
- 1:52Speaker 4: you've got some experienced guys back, which I like because
- 1:56Speaker 4: they've seen a lot.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Yeah, Cam Chadwick's back and I think he's really good player.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Where he's where's number thirteen? He started a lot last year.
- 2:03Speaker 3: He's a Jersey kid. He's got an ankle sprain, right, now,
- 2:06Speaker 3: but hopefully he'll be back next weekend. We brought in
- 2:09Speaker 3: a kid named Devin Pringle, who I think is going
- 2:12Speaker 3: to be a really good player. He wears number two.
- 2:14Speaker 3: He'll be our left corner. We talked about a Cyrus Gilbert,
- 2:17Speaker 3: who's a who's a young player. He's a he's actually
- 2:20Speaker 3: a freshman. He's from Atlanta, but his mom is the
- 2:24Speaker 3: track coach at Georgia women's track coach. He's actually gonna
- 2:27Speaker 3: be the track coach at the next Olympic, the twenty
- 2:29Speaker 3: twenty eight Olympic team. So he's got you know, he's
- 2:32Speaker 3: got some competitive jeans.
- 2:38Speaker 2: We've got give me some other names there and I'll
- 2:40Speaker 2: tell you.
- 2:40Speaker 4: If Welllyron Oh Parland he's a. He's a linebacker. Malachai MacLean,
- 2:47Speaker 4: he's not a. He's a safety. We're testing his knowledge now, Okay.
- 2:51Speaker 2: That's my other question.
- 2:52Speaker 4: You played a lot of five dbs.
- 2:54Speaker 3: We played. We play all five d Okay, say three,
- 2:57Speaker 3: So Mike is the three. He goes what three down
- 3:01Speaker 3: line plus three linebackers? Okay, so that means there's five
- 3:06Speaker 3: what defensive back?
- 3:08Speaker 2: There you go?
- 3:09Speaker 5: Baby, but every there five which you call safeties three Okay,
- 3:14Speaker 5: so we play with two corners and three safeties, and
- 3:16Speaker 5: we have a teasing you obviously we teased, but well,
- 3:20Speaker 5: we call a guy the dog, so like Malachi is
- 3:22Speaker 5: the dog, all right, So it's kind of a hybrid
- 3:25Speaker 5: linebacker safety.
- 3:26Speaker 3: You know, we have a boundary corner I'm sorry, boundary
- 3:30Speaker 3: safety who's more your true safety. You have a field
- 3:33Speaker 3: safety who's kind of maybe more of a nickel corner
- 3:36Speaker 3: safety combination guy.
- 3:37Speaker 2: We have a lot of variability in.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Our in our but all of them have to be
- 3:41Speaker 4: good cover guys.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Right, I think that's probably you know, if you're out
- 3:46Speaker 3: on the edge, you've got to be able to cover inside.
- 3:49Speaker 3: You've got to be able to you got to be
- 3:50Speaker 3: able to decipher what's happening, react, You've got to be
- 3:54Speaker 3: a good tackler.
- 3:55Speaker 2: And yeah it's a d dB. You have to be
- 3:57Speaker 2: able to recover.
- 3:58Speaker 4: So turnovers, we talked about the during one of the
- 4:00Speaker 4: breaks last year. You were kind of I think negative
- 4:03Speaker 4: in that category. You didn't turn the other team over
- 4:06Speaker 4: that much. You played some good d especially on third down,
- 4:10Speaker 4: But turnovers, in your mind, how important critically get them?
- 4:14Speaker 3: It's a well, turnover ratio is the most critical variable.
- 4:19Speaker 3: In determining wins and losses, and somehow last year, even
- 4:23Speaker 3: though we were negative, we found ways.
- 4:24Speaker 2: To win games. But you can't live in that world
- 4:28Speaker 2: very long.
- 4:28Speaker 3: So we have to take care of the football better,
- 4:30Speaker 3: and we have to do a better job of taking
- 4:32Speaker 3: the football away. Part of being a good defensive takeaway
- 4:36Speaker 3: team is you have to throw the ball and you
- 4:41Speaker 3: can make plays on the ball. You get sacks and
- 4:43Speaker 3: cause fumbles, scoop and score on the quarterback emphasizing it
- 4:47Speaker 3: in practice, you know, punching to the ball, ripping it out,
- 4:50Speaker 3: and we do a lot of that every single day.
- 4:52Speaker 2: We're working on that. And then you've got to get
- 4:54Speaker 2: on a run.
- 4:55Speaker 3: You know, you got to get on a run where
- 4:56Speaker 3: they turnovers kind of there's the fights on turnovers come
- 4:59Speaker 3: on bunches.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Yeah, some were constantly working on all right, so you'll
- 5:03Speaker 4: be better on first and second down.
- 5:04Speaker 2: That'll open up more opportunities on third and long. Geving
- 5:07Speaker 2: people over. Yeah, we were on the top teams in
- 5:10Speaker 2: the country last year on third and long. Yeahregul appreciate it.
- 5:14Speaker 2: We could do this for hours.
- 5:15Speaker 4: The crowd has been great.
- 5:17Speaker 6: Thank you for joining us at the Talking Music Lins.
