- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1944. The fourth day within the Octave of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 18 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:23In 1944 Pope Pius XII promulgated the Feast of the Immaculate Heart to be celebrated on the Octave Day of the Assumption. In 1950, after defining the dogma of the Assumption, he changed the mass of the Assumption from that which starts with the introit, let us all rejoice in the Lord to that which starts with in heaven a great portent appeared. In the pre-nineteen fifty five series, the propers during the octave are those used before 1944, that is before either of these changes.
- 1:08In the 1962 series, the propers follow the Missal as it stands. The following liturgical note from Dom Gaspar Lefevre is taken from the 1925 edition of the Saint Andrew Daily Missal and I present it here without updating. It was published twenty five years before Pope Pius XII defined the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a dogma of the faith. Of particular interest is the final line which records the judgment of Benedict the fourteenth who died in the year of our Lord 1758 that even in his day this truth was one which the faithful were not permitted to doubt. The immaculate body of Mary remained without corruption and was born up to heaven before the general resurrection.
- 2:14The Council of the Vatican, had to be adjourned in 1870, was not able to carry out the desire which had been expressed for the definition of this dogma. But the proclamation of the Immaculate Conception of Mary justifies all hopes for the glorious attainment of the assumption corresponds with the initial privilege and as the feast of the conception of the Virgin affirmed in certain liturgies how appropriately God Almighty had made Mary a creature apart from her very birth. The feast of the assumption each year proclaims the same appropriateness when her soul leaves this earth. The harmony which reigns in the works of God requires the anticipated resurrection of the Mother of God who, holy among all and ever virgin, deserves on the part of her son an adequate reward worthy of her position as queen of heaven and mediatrix of the universe. Although not defined as a dogma of our faith this truth is of those one is not permitted to doubt as Benedict XIV declares.
- 3:43Commemorated today is Saint Agapitus. In Palestine, says the Roman Martyrology, the birth unto heaven of Saint Agapitus, who when only 15 years old was put to death at Prinesta in Italy by the stroke of the sword, thus winning the crown of immortality in the year of our Lord 02/1975. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit.
- 4:29Let us all rejoice in the Lord, celebrating a festival day in honor of the blessed Virgin Mary, for whose assumption the angels rejoice and give praise to the Son of God. My heart hath uttered a good word. I speak my works to the king. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 5:06Let us all rejoice in the Lord celebrating a festival day in honor of the blessed Virgin Mary for whose assumption the angels rejoice and give praise to the Son of God. The Collect, let us pray. Forgive, we beseech thee, O Lord, the sins of thy servants. And may we, who are unable to please thee by our deeds, be saved by the intercession of the mother of thy son, our Lord, who with thee liveth and reigneth in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 5:59A commemoration of Saint Agapitus. May thy Church, O God, be gladdened by the intercession of blessed Agapitus, thy martyr, in which she trusts, and through his glorious prayers may she ever remain devoted to thee, and ever abide in safety through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the wisdom of Sirach. In all things I sought rest, and I shall abide in the inheritance of the Lord.
- 6:53Then the Creator of all things commanded, and He that made me rested in my tabernacle. And his command to me was that I should find my home in Jacob, throw in my lot with Israel, take root among his chosen race. And now I made Zion my stronghold, the holy city my resting place, Jerusalem my throne, my roots spread out among the people that enjoys his favor. My God has granted me a share in his own domain. Where his faithful servants are gathered, there I love to linger.
- 7:39I grew to my full stature as cedars grow in Lebanon, as cypress on Scion's Hill, as palm tree in the cades, or rose bush in Jericho, Fair as olive tree in the plain or as plain tree by the water side like cinnamon or scented balm I yield my perfume. My fragrance is like the choicest myrrh. The gradual, because of truth and meekness and justice, and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully. Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thy ear, for the king hath greatly desired thy beauty. Alleluia.
- 8:34Alleluia. Mary has been taken up into heaven. The angelic host rejoices. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke.
- 8:54In one of the villages Jesus entered during his journey at that time, A woman called Martha entertained him in her house. She had a sister called Mary and Mary took her place at the Lord's feet and listened to his words. Martha was distracted by waiting on many needs, so she came to his side and asked, Lord, art thou content that my sister should leave me to do the serving alone? Come, bid her help me. Jesus answered her, Martha, Martha, how many cares and troubles thou hast?
- 9:42But only one thing is necessary, and Mary has chosen for herself the best part of all that which shall never be taken away from her. The Offeratory. Mary hath been taken up into heaven. The angels rejoice and blessing God praise him with one voice. Alleluia.
- 10:14The secret. May the prayer of the mother of God come to the aid of thy people, O Lord. And although we know that she has passed from this life to fulfill the conditions of our mortality, nevertheless may we experience her intercession for us in the glory of heaven through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of Saint Agapitus.
- 11:01Receive, O Lord, the gifts which we present to thee on the feast day of him by whose patronage we hope to be delivered through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Preface of Our Lady It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, and that we should praise and bless and proclaim thee in the assumption of blessed Mary ever Virgin, who also conceived thine only begotten son by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost and the glory of her virginity still abiding, gave forth to the world the everlasting light, Jesus Christ, our Lord, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, The dominions worship it and the power stand in all. The heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat thee that thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with humble praise.
- 12:39Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
- 13:07Mary hath chosen for herself the best part which shall not be taken from her forever. The post communion. Let us pray. Having been made partakers of thy heavenly banquet, we implore thy mercy, O Lord our God, that we who celebrate the assumption of the mother of God may by her intercession be delivered from all the evils that threaten us through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 13:59A commemoration of Saint Agapitus. Thou hast satisfied, O Lord, thy household with holy gifts. Ever cherish us, we beseech thee, through the intercession of him whose festival we are keeping, through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost.
- 14:39Amen. And Mary said, my soul magnifies the Lord. My spirit has found joy in God who is my savior because he has looked graciously upon the lowliness of his handmaid. Behold, from this day forward, all generations will count me blessed because he who is mighty, he whose name is holy, has wrought for me his wonders. He has mercy upon those who fear him from generation unto generation.
- 15:16He has done valiantly with the strength of his arm, driving the proud astray in the conceit of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their seat and exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty handed. He has protected his servant Israel, keeping his merciful design in remembrance according to the promise which he made to our forefathers, Abraham, and his posterity forevermore. Amen.
- 15:57Mary exalted in spirit and said, I bless thee who art Lord over every blessing. I bless the dwelling of thy glory. I bless thee for whom was made a dwelling in my womb. I bless all the works of thy hands, which obey thee in all subjugation. I bless thy love wherewith thou hast loved us.
- 16:24I bless all the words that have come forth from thy mouth, and are given to us. For I believe in truth that as thou hast said, so shall it be done. Hallelujah.
