- 0:03Today we're going to do our final episode of Starship Week
- 0:07for the Starship IFT 2 launch. I'm your host, Will Walden and
- 0:12this rocket, the Starship rocket experienced A partial success in
- 0:17a dramatic failure during its latest test flight.
- 0:19The spacecraft, which is designed for deep space
- 0:22missions, managed to launch and separate from its Super Heavy
- 0:25booster, but ultimately ended in an explosion.
- 0:29In the first phase of the flight, the Super Heavy booster
- 0:31successfully ignited all 33 Raptor engines, feat that has
- 0:35been challenging even in ground tests.
- 0:37However, after the Starship spacecraft separated and
- 0:40continued its ascent, the booster unexpectedly exploded.
- 0:44The Starship reached an impressive altitude near the
- 0:47edge of space before encountering issues that led to
- 0:50the loss of signal and the activation of its self destruct
- 0:53mechanism. Now, this incident is a reminder
- 0:56of the complexities of this gigantic rocket, especially with
- 0:59new in these untested tech. Now, the FAA has already
- 1:03announced an investigation into this mishap.
- 1:06Now let's explore this event a little bit more.
- 1:08Now let's talk about the flight. The recent SpaceX Starship
- 1:11launch marked another huge step in the company's pursuit of
- 1:15space exploration. The launch saw the Starship
- 1:18spacecraft lift off with a super heavy booster, achieving a
- 1:20successful separation. Unfortunately, the booster
- 1:23exploded post separation, a set back that overshadowed the
- 1:26partial success of this whole flight.
- 1:29But it's the complete success in my mind.
- 1:31SpaceX aimed to push the spacecraft to near orbital
- 1:35velocities. This is a huge milestone for
- 1:37them, and it's for the future of their deep space missions.
- 1:41And despite reaching a significant altitude, the
- 1:43spacecraft ultimately lost contract and triggered its self
- 1:47destruct mechanism, a safety measure to prevent it from
- 1:50veering off course and hurting people and property.
- 1:53Now John Insprucker, we call him Daddy over here with the the
- 1:57SpaceX fan club over here who's an aerospace engineer, explained
- 2:02the late activation of the flight termination system.
- 2:04He works at SpaceX, which occurred over the Gulf of Mexico
- 2:08and this incident highlights the inherent risks in testing
- 2:11advanced rocket technology. SpaceX statement emphasized the
- 2:14learning approach, underscoring that each test, regardless of
- 2:17its outcome, contributes to improving Starships reliability.
- 2:21And the FAA's involvement with a statement confirming no injuries
- 2:23or damage to public property sets the stage for a little bit
- 2:27of more of a thorough investigation into this and
- 2:29they'll just be uncovering the root cause of this incident.
- 2:33But the FAA swift response to Space XS Starship test flight
- 2:37It's an important aspect of the ongoing development of the
- 2:40Starship. Their statement confirmed the
- 2:42occurrence of a mishap, which resulted in the loss of the
- 2:44Starship vehicle, but thankfully reported no injuries or damage
- 2:48to public property. The agency's role is crucial in
- 2:51ensuring that such ambitious aerospace endeavors adhere to
- 2:55safety standards and regulations.
- 2:57They have initiated A mishap investigation to determine the
- 3:01specific causes of Starship's failure, and I'm assuming that
- 3:05once they figure out what the causes were, they will make sure
- 3:08that SpaceX addresses those concerns for the IFT 3 launch,
- 3:13which will be coming up probably in the first quarter of next
- 3:16year. The FAA's investigation is
- 3:18standard procedure following such events, aiming to provide
- 3:21insights that can prevent future incidents.
- 3:24The decision on whether the Starship Super Heavy vehicle can
- 3:26return to flight will depend on the findings of this
- 3:29investigation and their assessment of Spacex's measures
- 3:32to ensure public safety. And the duration of the
- 3:34investigation is uncertain. As previous inquiries had taken
- 3:37several months, this one might be a little bit less time, and
- 3:41this process demonstrates the FAA's commitment to overseeing
- 3:44the safety of aerospace developments.
- 3:47Now we have to talk about the hot staging.
- 3:49This is a new part of the Starship IFT 2.
- 3:52SpaceX Starship test flight brought attention to the complex
- 3:55process of what they call hot staging.
- 3:58This is the technique used during the Rockets launch.
- 4:02This method of first for SpaceX on Saturday is part of the stage
- 4:06separation process. Unlike the pneumatic pushers
- 4:09used in the Falcon 9 rocket, Starship separation involved
- 4:13igniting its engines to detach from the Super heavy booster.
- 4:16So the top part ignites the engines while it's still
- 4:19attached to the bottom part. And this aggressive separation
- 4:22approach, referred to as separation by blunt force
- 4:26trauma, was identified as the riskiest part of the flight by
- 4:29Elon Musk. An explosion of a super heavy
- 4:32booster post hot staging was an unexpected outcome, indicating
- 4:35the challenges of this new technique.
- 4:37Although SpaceX was prepared for the possibility of the booster
- 4:39not surviving, they actually didn't expect it to survive.
- 4:42They expected to splash down in the Gulf of Mexico and
- 4:45disintegrate, and the actual event provided valuable data for
- 4:49future improvements of hot staging and the booster flip
- 4:52back maneuver. Now the goal was to reignite the
- 4:55Super heavy engines for a controlled landing, a plan that
- 4:57went kind of awry. Kate Tai, senior manager at
- 5:00SpaceX, acknowledged the dynamic nature of hot staging and its
- 5:03potential risks, and this incident underscores.
- 5:06After the tumultuous hot staging, the Starship spacecraft
- 5:09continued its ascent, though showcasing that SpaceX is on the
- 5:13ball. With their engineering
- 5:14capabilities, Mission Control erupted into cheers.
- 5:17The Starship near the end of its engine burn, seemingly on course
- 5:20for Earth's orbit. However, the situation took a
- 5:23turn when SpaceX lost video signal with the spacecraft,
- 5:26followed by the loss of data. And usually when you lose data
- 5:30from a spacecraft, something pretty bad happened.
- 5:33Now this indicated the Starship was not performing as planned,
- 5:36leading to the activation of its Flight Termination System in the
- 5:39spacecraft journey, which was intended to complete nearly a
- 5:42full orbit around Earth. The splashdown near Hawaii was
- 5:45cut a little bit short, and this abrupt end to the test flight
- 5:48highlights the unpredictable nature of starships and
- 5:51especially with these new technologies.
- 5:53And since this is only the 2nd test flight, it's going to get
- 5:56better every single time. The early termination of the
- 5:59flight, while disappointing, is a part of the iterative process
- 6:02of testing and learning and rocket development.
- 6:05The recent Starship incident bears a resemblance to the first
- 6:08launch attempt in April, sort of, but a super heavy booster
- 6:11experienced engine failures leading to an out of control
- 6:14spiral and activation of the self destruct feature.
- 6:18These repeated mishaps demonstrates the challenges that
- 6:20SpaceX faces in developing such a complex and massive rocket
- 6:25system. However, the company's approach
- 6:27to rocket development is notably different from traditional
- 6:30methods. SpaceX embraces learning
- 6:32opportunities presented by these gigantic fireballs in the sky,
- 6:36and they're kind of mishaps, and they use them to enhance their
- 6:39designs and strategies going forward.
- 6:41The rebuilding and upgrading of the launch site in the Starship
- 6:44systems following the April mishap, their philosophy of
- 6:47learning through flying and testing, as opposed to relying
- 6:49solely on ground simulations and models, has been a key aspect of
- 6:53the rapid development cycle. This approach, while sometimes
- 6:56leading to dynamic failures, is instrumental in Spacex's pursuit
- 7:00of breakthroughs in space technology.
