Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And Gavin Gray are UK europe correspondent given welcome to
- 0:02Speaker 1: the show.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Hither run.
- 0:04Speaker 1: So Kirs Starmer's come out and basically joined the French
- 0:07Speaker 1: saying to Israel, if you don't sort out a ceasefire
- 0:11Speaker 1: by September by this UN meeting, then we'll recognize Palestinian state.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Yeah, this is quite a change of tactic here by
- 0:19Speaker 2: the British and buy Indeed, Sirkir Starmer himself, who has
- 0:23Speaker 2: really shrugged off demands from his own MPs and others,
- 0:26Speaker 2: saying the situation in Gaza is so bad now we
- 0:29Speaker 2: really need to demand a two state solution to this.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Just a few days ago, two hundred and twenty one
- 0:36Speaker 2: MPs from nine parties urged the recognition of a Palestinian state,
- 0:41Speaker 2: many of them from the Labor Government, Sakir Starmer's own
- 0:44Speaker 2: Labor party. So what they're saying is unless Israel meets
- 0:48Speaker 2: certain conditions, and those conditions are substantive steps to end
- 0:52Speaker 2: the appalling situation in Gaza, including a ceasefire and the
- 0:57Speaker 2: commitment of long term peace process to then the UK
- 1:02Speaker 2: will officially at the UN meeting, along with France, basically
- 1:06Speaker 2: recognize Palestinian state. So France was going to be the
- 1:09Speaker 2: first G seven country to do it. Now it's looking
- 1:12Speaker 2: like the first and second will do it at the
- 1:14Speaker 2: same time. This, as I said, is a huge U turn,
- 1:17Speaker 2: but amid huge pressure as well and terrible, terrible headlines.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Sixty thousand now killed in Gaza, it's been estimated during
- 1:24Speaker 2: the Israeli action there, the UN Agency saying famine is
- 1:28Speaker 2: now playing out on a wide scale. Israel says no starvation,
- 1:32Speaker 2: and of the UK's latest move, Israel says it rejects
- 1:34Speaker 2: the statement it's rewarding hammers for the October twenty twenty
- 1:38Speaker 2: three attack, and also says that the British move harms
- 1:41Speaker 2: efforts for a ceasefar.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Meanwhile, Trump's wrapping up his trip to Scotland golf tru.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yes on his way on his way back home after
- 1:49Speaker 2: four days here in the UK in what I can
- 1:51Speaker 2: only describe as a sort of private trip and a
- 1:54Speaker 2: business trip but funded by the American taxpayer. The visiting
- 1:59Speaker 2: of two golf courses, okay, the long discussion of course
- 2:01Speaker 2: with the UK Prime Minister Sekleir Starmer, the announcement of
- 2:05Speaker 2: the trade deal with the EU, and today a conversation
- 2:09Speaker 2: that was said to be up to about fifteen to
- 2:11Speaker 2: twenty minutes with John Swinney, the First Minister of Scotland.
- 2:15Speaker 2: The main thing was discussing whiskey tariffs. John Swinney is
- 2:18Speaker 2: desperate that this business, worth one point nine billion New
- 2:23Speaker 2: Zealand dollars last year, is going to be hit by
- 2:26Speaker 2: the ten percent tariffs that Donald Trump has imposed. Donald
- 2:31Speaker 2: Trump said he didn't realize that tariffs were going to
- 2:33Speaker 2: affect the industry so much. So maybe, just maybe John
- 2:36Speaker 2: Swinney's words might get the tax break for the whiskey industry,
- 2:41Speaker 2: but I wouldn't hold your breath. Donald Trump apparently not
- 2:43Speaker 2: a big whiskey fan.
- 2:44Speaker 1: No, doesn't drink at all. Appreciate Thatkevin Gray, you correspondent.
