- 0:26notes. This morning SpaceX launched
- 0:28their massive Starship rocket and they completed 1/2 world
- 0:32journey after launching from South Texas Starbase Boca Chica.
- 0:37Now this is a low Earth orbit launch.
- 0:40It's a crucial capability for future launches for Starship,
- 0:44and the launch occurred from Starbase at about 8:25 AM
- 0:49Central time. This is the third iteration of
- 0:52the full stack Starship rocket flight.
- 0:54It's 397 feet tall and its width is bigger than a 747 jumbo jet
- 1:01is huge. It's about 30 feet around and it
- 1:03had its take off time adjusted to ensure the surrounding waters
- 1:08were clear of any vessels. So people in boats were hanging
- 1:11out in the no fly zone and SpaceX had to take extra little,
- 1:15a little bit extra time to move those boats.
- 1:17Get those boats out of there. They were supposed to launch in
- 1:21about 7:30 AM Central time, so 8:30 AM my time and Eastern
- 1:27Time. And they had to push it back
- 1:29about an hour to get those boats out of there, which is very
- 1:33crucial, very beneficial to those boats because it's very
- 1:36dangerous to be under the giant shrapnel tube that is Starship.
- 1:43That is if it didn't work out right.
- 1:45But this launch went pretty well actually.
- 1:48So this flight built on previous test, there's marked
- 1:53improvements, and now they're moving closer to operational
- 1:56satellite launches for the Starlink.
- 1:59They're going to accelerate Starlink satellite deployments,
- 2:03and this will contribute to the company's expansive network of
- 2:08satellites orbiting the Earth right now and also accelerate
- 2:11their bottom line. They make money from Starlink
- 2:14and if they can deploy hundreds of Starlinks more per month,
- 2:19they will have more coverage and people will be able to get the
- 2:22the coverage more and they'll have better coverage for the
- 2:25people on the Earth and therefore make more money.
- 2:29So Elon Musk celebrated this launch.
- 2:33He's prideful about what happened with the team.
- 2:35He said Starship reached orbital velocity, which is a huge deal
- 2:40for a Starship because the next, probably the next phase is to
- 2:45get it to orbit. IFT 4 to get it to orbit, make
- 2:48sure that everything works right.
- 2:49They open up the Hatch door today, they did a propellant
- 2:53transfer demonstration. They closed the Hatch door.
- 2:56It was a pretty big milestone, a bunch of little milestones that
- 2:59were pretty big. And there's several firsts that
- 3:03happened during this flight, and one of those was the payload
- 3:07door. That happened.
- 3:09The payload door opens and closes sort of like a Pez
- 3:12dispenser. That's what they call it.
- 3:14And that was that happened for about 20 minutes straight, and
- 3:18there was also an internal transfer liquid oxygen
- 3:21propellant. They're stepping stones towards
- 3:26in orbit fuel refueling, which is a necessity for more extended
- 3:31space missions, including the Artemis missions for NASA lunar
- 3:35landings and also Mars missions. Now, not all objectives were
- 3:40met, though. The Super Heavy booster failed
- 3:42to execute a controlled splashdown leading to an
- 3:46uncontrolled descent into the Gulf of Mexico, which is you
- 3:49know, they plan for these things and they'll learn from it.
- 3:52Additionally, a planned Raptor engine restart in space did not
- 3:55occur with SpaceX yet to provide any explanation about why that
- 4:00happened or why they didn't happen.
- 4:02So Starship also allows for substantial payload
- 4:07capabilities, promising to deliver up to 150 metric tons to
- 4:11lower Earth orbit and an expendable configuration.
- 4:15This capacity nearly double S to about 300 metric tons, which is
- 4:20an absolutely massive amount of things to send to the Earth
- 4:25orbit. It's it's incredible how much
- 4:31300 tons, 300 metric tons of things are.
- 4:35Now Musk is talking about Starship.
- 4:38Recently he envisaged it as a cornerstone in his plan for
- 4:41interplanetary human settlement, particularly Mars, and in the
- 4:45shorter term, Starship will play a crucial role in satellite
- 4:48deployment in an integral role in NASA's Artemis program for
- 4:52lunar exploration. Starting with Artemis 3 in about
- 4:552028 probably, the flight demonstrated the reliability of
- 4:59the Super heavy booster's 33 Raptor engines, all of which
- 5:02performed great. The thrust powered the rocket on
- 5:05its initial climb and subsequent trajectory over the Gulf of
- 5:08Mexico, now approximately 2 minutes and 42 seconds post
- 5:12launch, the booster began shutting down its engines,
- 5:14initiating a hot staging process.
- 5:17Now this technique, which was inspired by Russian rocketry,
- 5:21allows for a seamless transition between stages, avoiding any
- 5:25interrupted thrust. So basically the booster is
- 5:29still going up and out and as that's happening the stages
- 5:33start separating, but when they separate the ship actually
- 5:37ignites its engines and it pushes the booster back a little
- 5:40bit while also pushing the second stage, the Starship
- 5:43vehicle itself up towards orbit faster.
- 5:46Now the upper stage is 6 Raptor engines then propelled the
- 5:49vehicle to a near orbital velocity reaching a peak
- 5:53altitude of 144 miles and like Elon said, they did get to
- 5:58orbital velocity. Eventually the design trajectory
- 6:02ensured that the spacecraft would re enter the atmosphere
- 6:05before completing a full orbit, preventing it from becoming
- 6:08space debris. We don't want that.
- 6:09We don't want it to burn up. We want to test all the systems
- 6:12on the way back in. Now comparing the 1st 3 orbital
- 6:15test flights of Starship though, a clear trajectory of
- 6:19improvement is evident. The initial flight faced engine
- 6:22failures and caused huge damage to the launchpad.
- 6:25The second flight saw no engine failures, though a propellant
- 6:29tank led to the Rockets destruction.
- 6:33Now also the reliability of the Raptor engines has been
- 6:36confirmed over the last two flights, addressing earlier
- 6:39concerns regarding their performance.
- 6:41This is a huge achievement for Space XS rocket technology.
- 6:46It shows that they can continue to build these and they're on
- 6:48the right track to build hundreds of these.
- 6:51According to Elon Musk now on boards, cameras during this
- 6:54flight were unprecedented, including the hot staging
- 6:59process and the rocket. Its whole journey across the
- 7:02gloom, their valuable insights into the rocket's performance
- 7:07and the behavior in various phases of the flight for SpaceX,
- 7:11but also we got to see them as well.
- 7:14So that was a really, really great treat for all of us rocket
- 7:17fans out there. And this flight was a success,
- 7:22but it concluded over the Indian Ocean where Starship Re entered
- 7:25the Earth's atmosphere and was ultimately destroyed.
- 7:28But we also got great video of that.
- 7:31So if you haven't seen that yet, please check it out on Spacex's
- 7:36X account. But despite all the failures, it
- 7:39was deemed the most successful today, fulfilling several
- 7:42crucial objectives. And NASA's anticipation for this
- 7:46mission stems from $4 billion investment in Starship for lunar
- 7:51missions. The test represents a
- 7:54significant step forwards for humans to return to the moon,
- 7:57especially with that propellant transfer.
- 7:59That's something they'll have to do for the Artemis missions to
- 8:02get people back to the moon. Now SpaceX has several more
- 8:06starships in production. They're continuing to aim for
- 8:10test flights throughout the year.
- 8:12Elon said he wants to have nine test flights.
- 8:15Realistically, if they can get to 9 test flights, that would be
- 8:18ridiculous. Everybody that I've talked to so
- 8:22far in the Space Flight category has said six at best.
- 8:29More than likely they'll have four more this year, but six at
- 8:33the best. But if they can get nine, they
- 8:34still have to get approval for the 9 as well, which they
- 8:37probably will get approval now with each subsequent flight,
- 8:41though, they're going to be refining Starships design and
- 8:43capabilities every single time. The iterative process is crucial
- 8:47for developing the future success of Starship, and every
- 8:53single ship will be better, faster, more powerful, more
- 8:56reliable, and be able to get things to low Earth orbit in a
- 9:00more timely manner. And each test is a learning
- 9:04opportunity. Hardware is evolving, Software
- 9:08is evolving, The ground systems are all evolving every single
- 9:12launch. And SpaceX advances its mission
- 9:15of space exploration, and they're inching closer to its
- 9:19goals of interplanetary travel and also habitation.
