- 0:01Good morning and a warm welcome to your show,
- 0:04Sunny Mornings in Boston. I'm your host, Melissa,
- 0:09and it's Tuesday, August 19th. You'll be interested
- 0:13to know. 65 years ago today, in 1960, the Soviet
- 0:18Union launched Sputnik V, the first spacecraft
- 0:21to carry animals into orbit and return them safely
- 0:25to Earth. This historic mission included two
- 0:29courageous dogs, Belka and Strelka, along with
- 0:33a gray rabbit, 40 mice, two rats, and 15 flasks
- 0:37of fruit flies. Their successful journey paved
- 0:41the way for human spaceflight, demonstrating
- 0:44that living organisms could survive and thrive
- 0:47in the harsh environment of space. So now you
- 0:51know. And now, it's time for the weather report.
- 0:58This morning, it's mostly sunny and it feels
- 1:01like 57 degrees with 6 mile per hour wind. The
- 1:06sunset will take place at 737 and it will rise
- 1:09again tomorrow at 556. It looks like we're in
- 1:14for a mostly sunny Tuesday with temperatures
- 1:16climbing to around 75 accompanied by a light
- 1:20east wind. Tonight, expect partly cloudy skies
- 1:25with a low of 58. and a gentle southeast breeze.
- 1:30For all you beach runners out there, the first
- 1:32high tide Tuesday will be at 830 with a low tide
- 1:36just before 230. The near -shore buoy at Cape
- 1:41Cod Bay reads 68 degrees for the water temperature.
- 1:46Looking ahead in the weather, expect partly sunny
- 1:50skies on Wednesday and Thursday with highs near
- 1:5375. A slight chance of rain showers lingers Wednesday
- 1:58night and Saturday morning. Friday and Saturday
- 2:01will be sunny, with highs near 78 and 83, respectively.

- 2:46send you. In local news. Boston residents looking
- 2:52for a convenient way to transport heavy loads
- 2:55can now take advantage of Cargob, the first cargo
- 2:59-e -bike share service in North America, launched
- 3:02right here in 2024. The service has expanded
- 3:06to a new location in the seaport, at the corner
- 3:09of Autumn Lane and Boston Moor Froad. Co -founder
- 3:14Zach DeClerk emphasizes that this service is
- 3:17ideal for those who prefer biking over sitting
- 3:19in traffic. With eight additional stations across
- 3:23Greater Boston, including Jamaica Plain and Cambridge,
- 3:26and plans to double their fleet from 12 bikes,
- 3:29Cargob aims to redefine urban mobility. Riders
- 3:34can rent bikes by the minute or day simply by
- 3:37downloading the app and scanning a QR code to
- 3:40unlock their ride. Now on to sports. Calls for
- 3:50Los Angeles to withdraw from hosting the 2028
- 3:53Olympics are growing amid wildfires and immigration
- 3:56raids. However, LA 28 leaders maintain that the
- 4:01federal government has assured safe travel for
- 4:04foreign athletes. Historically, the Olympics
- 4:07have faced challenges, yet cities have rarely
- 4:10canceled or relocated the games. Legally, Los
- 4:14Angeles cannot back out due to a binding host
- 4:17city contract signed in 2017, which lacks termination
- 4:21options for the host city. With only three years
- 4:24until the Games, preparations continue, despite
- 4:27obstacles such as construction delays and political
- 4:30tensions, making withdrawal nearly impossible.
- 4:35In local sports. Last night at Fenway Park, the
- 4:39Red Sox lost to the Orioles 6 -3. Orioles pitcher
- 4:44Rodgers earned the win with seven innings pitched,
- 4:47while the Sox's May took the loss. Henderson
- 4:51homered, and Basalo drove in two. The Sox finished
- 4:56with six hits and zero errors, leaving four runners
- 4:59on base. The Orioles had 12 hits and zero errors.
- 5:06Boston's record falls to 68 -58. Tonight, the
- 5:11Red Sox clash with the Orioles again at Fenway
- 5:14Park in Boston for the final game of this two
- 5:17-game series. Walker Bueller is 7 -7 with a 5
- 5:22.43 earned run average, faces Tomoyuki Shigano,
- 5:26who is 10 -5 with a 4 .13. First pitch at 7 -10.
- 5:32The temperature is a comfortable 67 degrees under
- 5:36clear skies for this home game. In top news,
- 5:41analysts and investors are closely monitoring
- 5:45a significant drop in cardboard box sales, an
- 5:48unusual but telling indicator of the United States
- 5:51economy. The demand for corrugated cardboard,
- 5:55essential for transporting various goods, has
- 5:58hit its lowest second -quarter level since 2015.
- 6:03Major companies, like International Paper Company,
- 6:06report a 5 % decline in shipments. while SWERF
- 6:10at Westrock notes a 4 .5 % drop in North America.
- 6:14With consumer spending comprising nearly 70 %
- 6:18of the economy, this slump raises concerns about
- 6:21future retail demand. As the economy braces for
- 6:26possible corrections, industry experts are hoping
- 6:28for recovery later this year. In business news...
- 6:35Soon, investors will be able to trade shares
- 6:37of OpenAI and SpaceX through tokens similar to
- 6:42cryptocurrency. Tokenization allows retail investors
- 6:46access to private company shares traditionally
- 6:49available only to institutional investors. However,
- 6:54these tokens are not the same as actual equity.
- 6:57A Robinhood spokesperson explained that stock
- 7:00tokens provide economic exposure tied to the
- 7:04underlying asset's price, but they do not guarantee
- 7:07ownership. Investors may face risks as tokenized
- 7:11shares lack transparency and access to important
- 7:15company information, leading to a speculative
- 7:18investment environment. Understanding these factors
- 7:21is essential before participating. In crypto
- 7:25movement, Bitcoin is down 1 % to about $116 ,000.
- 7:33Ethereum is down 3 % to just over $4 ,300. And
- 7:39XRP is down 1 % to $3 .06. Moving on to a more
- 7:45local vibe. In our community spotlight on health

- 8:29back to the show. Let's talk science. Researchers
- 8:34at Northwestern University have revealed fascinating
- 8:37insights into super -agers, individuals over
- 8:4180 who maintain cognitive function comparable
- 8:44to much younger people. Over 25 years, they studied
- 8:49more than 100 super -agers and examined 77 postmortem
- 8:54brains. A key personality trait of super -agers
- 8:58is their sociability. as they tend to live life
- 9:02on their own terms, often engaging with their
- 9:05communities. Interestingly, super -agers show
- 9:09slower brain shrinkage and a more robust cholinergic
- 9:12system, which may protect against neurodegenerative
- 9:15diseases. While lifestyle choices may play a
- 9:19role, researchers emphasize that more questions
- 9:22remain than answers as they continue this groundbreaking
- 9:25work. and in entertainment news. The official
- 9:32trailer for Good Boy, directed by Ben Leonberg,
- 9:35showcases a haunted house from a dog's perspective.
- 9:39This feature debut hits theaters on October 3rd,
- 9:43following its premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest
- 9:47Film Festival. The trailer introduces Indy, a
- 9:52loyal dog, and his owner, Todd, portrayed by
- 9:55Shane Jensen. as they encounter paranormal activity
- 9:58in their new home. Heartwarming messages like,
- 10:02man's best friend, and always by your side fade
- 10:06to suspense as Indy investigates eerie sounds.
- 10:10Well, alrighty folks, it's time for the quote
- 10:14of the day. And today, our quote comes from the
- 10:18American inventor and entrepreneur, Steve Jobs.
- 10:21And he said, Innovation distinguishes between
- 10:25a leader and a follower. And that's a wrap for
