Speaker 2: Gravy Bowl is back at Capitol Market on Saturday, November

Speaker 2: me to talk about that. Plus, Danny Jones will start by,

Speaker 2: Taylor, text 304-935-5008. From time to time, you like to
• 2:42
Speaker 2: check in on things happening out at Bridge Valley Community
• 2:45
Speaker 2: and Technical College. Michelle Wicks, is the Vice President of
• 2:48
Speaker 2: Student Affairs at Bridge Valley. She joins us this morning
• 2:50
Speaker 2: via the Guarantee Bank hotline. Michelle, good morning. Welcome to
• 2:53
  Speaker 2: the show.
• 2:54
  Speaker 6: Good morning.
• 2:55
Speaker 7: Thanks for having me.
• 2:56
Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. Now, I know we are
• 2:58
Speaker 2: in the middle of fall right now, but spring registration
• 3:01
Speaker 2: has already started at Bridge Valley, started yesterday for the
• 3:04
Speaker 2: classes that, of course, began in January. Now, you folks
• 3:07
Speaker 2: at Bridge Valley, you see so many different kinds of students,
• 3:11
Speaker 2: those of high school age, those that are returning after
• 3:13
Speaker 2: some time away, maybe somebody making a career change.
• 3:16
  Speaker 5: All are welcome.
• 3:17
Speaker 2: At Bridge Valley, it'd be a great time to start
• 3:19
Speaker 2: with the spring semester, right?
• 3:21
Speaker 7: Absolutely. Yeah, we have all kinds of students on campus.
• 3:25
Speaker 7: Like you said, it could be the student just coming
• 3:28
Speaker 7: out of high school. It could be someone who hasn't
• 3:31
Speaker 7: gone to high school and been out of high school
• 3:33
Speaker 7: for 20 years and has decided to come back to college.
• 3:36
Speaker 7: But we're an open door. We're happy to have anybody
• 3:39
Speaker 7: that would like to make that change in their life.
• 3:42
Speaker 7: And registration for the spring semester did start just this
• 3:45
Speaker 7: week for our currently enrolled students. So any student that's
• 3:48
Speaker 7: currently enrolled started registering for the spring semester, which starts
• 3:52
Speaker 7: January 19th. And then we'll open up to new students
• 3:57
  Speaker 7: on November 10th.
• 3:58
Speaker 2: What's the big selling point for Bridge Valley? I know
• 4:01
Speaker 2: that's kind of a very vague statement, and we've talked
• 4:03
Speaker 2: about Bridge Valley the last couple of years, but If you,
• 4:06
Speaker 2: if somebody, let's just say you had a parent that
• 4:09
Speaker 2: had a kid that just graduated from high school, or
• 4:10
Speaker 2: you were talking to somebody, you know, in the supermarket
• 4:13
Speaker 2: or elevator or something that stops you and just said,
• 4:15
Speaker 2: I'm thinking about changing careers. What's the big selling point
• 4:20
  Speaker 2: for Bridge Valley?
• 4:22
Speaker 7: There's a couple of things. One is that you can
• 4:24
Speaker 7: get a career. It doesn't necessarily mean you have to
• 4:28
Speaker 7: go to a four-year institution. That's perfectly fine. And we
• 4:30
Speaker 7: are stepping stone to that as well. But you can
• 4:33
Speaker 7: get a very well-paying job in a matter of two
• 4:36
Speaker 7: years or less. We have programs like nursing. A lot
• 4:42
Speaker 7: of folks don't realize that you can go into our
• 4:45
Speaker 7: nursing program and be here for two years and have
• 4:47
Speaker 7: your RN degree. A lot of folks think you have
• 4:49
Speaker 7: to go to a four-year program to get an RN degree,
• 4:52
Speaker 7: and that's not true. We have... Arians that graduate from
• 4:57
Speaker 7: Bridge Valley every year. Also, we have advanced manufacturing technology,
• 5:02
Speaker 7: where we have a partnership with some of our local
• 5:05
Speaker 7: businesses like Toyota, where the students can come and train
• 5:10
Speaker 7: at Toyota, work at Toyota, and then come here for
• 5:14
Speaker 7: class instruction and do that at the same time. And
• 5:17
Speaker 7: they're getting paid for it. So we have lots of
• 5:20
Speaker 7: opportunities here. Short-term programs as short as even 10 weeks.
• 5:24
Speaker 7: We have a short-term program in phlebotomy. Students can get
• 5:27
Speaker 7: a certification in phlebotomy in just a matter of 10 weeks.
• 5:32
Speaker 2: And that actually leads me to my next point. Again,
• 5:34
Speaker 2: we're talking with Michelle Wicks, who's the Vice President of
• 5:37
Speaker 2: Student Affairs at Bridge Valley Community and Technical College. I
• 5:39
Speaker 2: want to talk about those short-term trainings because as little
• 5:44
Speaker 2: as 10 weeks, you could be on your path to
• 5:47
Speaker 2: a new career in as little as 10 weeks. Talk
• 5:48
Speaker 2: about some of those.
• 5:50
  Speaker 6: Exactly.
• 5:51
Speaker 7: Phlebotomy is one. We also have a CDL program, which
• 5:54
Speaker 7: is just a few weeks. We have lots of interest
• 5:57
Speaker 7: in that CDL program, and that's commercial driver's license, if
• 6:02
Speaker 7: you're not sure what CDL is. So if you want
• 6:04
Speaker 7: to drive a big truck, you can get that certification
• 6:07
Speaker 7: in just a matter of weeks. In conjunction to that,
• 6:11
Speaker 7: we also have a program called the Utility Lineman Services.
• 6:16
Speaker 7: And if you want to work for companies like AEP
• 6:19
Speaker 7: or other electrical companies, companies, you can come in and
• 6:22
Speaker 7: do the utility lineman program. Again, a lot of these
• 6:25
Speaker 7: programs are short-term. Some may take as much as two years.
• 6:28
Speaker 7: Some don't necessarily have to, but they're all really connected
• 6:33
Speaker 7: to what the region needs as far as workforce. We
• 6:36
Speaker 7: work really closely with our communities in the region to
• 6:39
Speaker 7: determine what kinds of workforce they're in need of, and
• 6:42
Speaker 7: we do our best to train them and get them ready.
• 6:44
Speaker 2: And a lot of these employers are standing ready as
• 6:48
Speaker 2: soon as that the ink's not even dry on the
• 6:50
Speaker 2: certificate yet when they are ready to hire they're ready
• 6:53
Speaker 2: to say hey let's let's go to work like you
• 6:56
  Speaker 2: know we're you're you're graduating the program at two we'll
• 6:59
  Speaker 2: see you at three it's i mean it's it's that
• 7:01
Speaker 2: kind of a thing it's seriously it is it.
• 7:03
Speaker 7: Really is we have great partnerships with a lot of
• 7:07
Speaker 7: the local businesses our hospitals locally wvu madison and camc
• 7:11
Speaker 7: or vendalia health um as well as, like I said, Toyota, Nucor,
• 7:17
Speaker 7: which is a business in another county, but they hire
• 7:20
Speaker 7: a lot of our students to graduate from our program. So, yeah,
• 7:24
Speaker 7: they're chomping at the bit to get our students as
• 7:26
Speaker 7: soon as they graduate.
• 7:27
Speaker 2: We're talking with Michelle Wicks again from Bridge Valley. It's 915.
• 7:30
Speaker 2: Available now on Metro News Television. Experience the greatest walk
• 7:33
Speaker 2: in golf. Watch the full Pikewood National Invitational, where championship
• 7:37
Speaker 2: competition meets spectacular West Virginia scenery. Presented by Greer Industries
• 7:41
Speaker 2: and Morgan Stanley. Now available on Metro News. television. And
• 7:44
Speaker 2: let's talk about people that start at Bridge Valley, Michelle,
• 7:47
Speaker 2: and then choose to move on to another institution of
• 7:49
Speaker 2: higher learning. That happens a lot too.
• 7:51
Speaker 7: Absolutely. And actually, it can be a cheaper route to
• 7:54
Speaker 7: do that if they're looking for financially a better route
• 7:59
Speaker 7: to get to that four-year degree. A lot of our
• 8:01
Speaker 7: students come here and go their first two years and
• 8:03
Speaker 7: get a lot of their general requirements out of the way,
• 8:06
Speaker 7: like their English, their math, their social sciences, And then
• 8:09
Speaker 7: they'll take those credits and transfer them into a four-year
• 8:12
Speaker 7: degree program. And because of programs like the West Virginia
• 8:15
Speaker 7: Invest program, which is a state-funded financial aid program that
• 8:21
Speaker 7: helps students going into community colleges, they can go here
• 8:25
Speaker 7: with tuition being paid for through the West Virginia Invest.
• 8:29
Speaker 7: Or even if they don't want to just take their
• 8:31
Speaker 7: gen ed, they can start here and get maybe a
• 8:33
Speaker 7: business administration or business management degree and then progress into
• 8:38
Speaker 7: a four-year management degree from our credits due transfer.
• 8:43
Speaker 2: And you've got a few open houses coming up. I
• 8:46
Speaker 2: wanted to give you an opportunity to talk about those
• 8:47
  Speaker 2: before we close.
• 8:48
Speaker 7: Yes, we do. We have some upcoming open houses in
• 8:53
Speaker 7: just a few weeks, the first one being on November 5th,
• 8:57
Speaker 7: the next being November 10th, and the last one on
• 9:00
  Speaker 7: November 12th. They're all from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.,
• 9:04
  Speaker 7: I'm sorry.
• 9:05
  Speaker 2: Oh, you're fine.
• 9:05
Speaker 7: And at different locations because we pretty much gear each
• 9:11
Speaker 7: date with specific majors. So, for example, November 5th is
• 9:17
Speaker 7: in our building 2000, our main building on the South
• 9:19
Speaker 7: Charleston campus. So, anyone interested in allied health or business
• 9:23
Speaker 7: or gen ed would likely come to that open house
• 9:26
Speaker 7: if they're interested in programs that we offer because we
• 9:30
Speaker 7: do have a campus in Montgomery, which is about 35
• 9:33
Speaker 7: minutes from the South Charleston campus. Dental hygiene is located
• 9:37
  Speaker 7: over there.
• 9:38
  Speaker 8: Diesel.
• 9:40
Speaker 7: So those are some of the programs over there. So
• 9:42
Speaker 7: if you're interested in programs in Montgomery, you come to
• 9:46
Speaker 7: us in the Montgomery campus on November 10th. And then
• 9:49
Speaker 7: in Toyota Hall on our South Charleston campus, we have
• 9:54
Speaker 7: all of our technology and workforce programs are housed in
• 9:57
Speaker 7: that area. and that I've been is on November 12th.
• 10:02
Speaker 2: Michelle Wicks is the vice president of student affairs at
• 10:05
Speaker 2: Bridge Valley Community Technical College. Michelle, it's always a pleasure
• 10:07
Speaker 2: to have you folks on the show. And I guess
• 10:10
Speaker 2: people just go to the website if they need any information,
• 10:12
Speaker 2: anything we talked about. Give us that website.
• 10:15
  Speaker 7: Exactly. It's www.bridgevalley.edu.
• 10:18
  Speaker 6: All right.
• 10:18
Speaker 2: We'll talk again soon. Thanks a lot.
• 10:20
  Speaker 6: Thank you.
• 10:21
Speaker 2: It is 918 every Friday morning, 906. We do a
• 10:24
Speaker 2: thing we call the Adopt Me Please Pet of the
• 10:26
Speaker 2: Week from the Kanawha Charleston Humane Association, brought to you
• 10:29
Speaker 2: by Almost Heaven Interiors, family-owned, proudly serving the community for
• 10:32
Speaker 2: over 50 years. They specialize in custom blinds, shades, shutters, upholstery,
• 10:36
Speaker 2: and beautifully crafted sewn goods. Homes to hospitals, classrooms, commercial spaces,
• 10:40
Speaker 2: they do it all, 516 D Street in South Charleston.
• 10:43
Speaker 2: Danny Jones is going to join us coming up a
• 10:45
Speaker 2: little bit later on. Also, we're going to talk a
• 10:47
Speaker 2: little biscuit. and gravy when we come back. The third
• 10:50
Speaker 2: annual biscuit and gravy bowl happening next month at Capital Market.
• 10:53
Speaker 2: It's kind of a fundraiser for the South Ridge Church
• 10:55
Speaker 2: for the different programs that they do. So we're going
• 10:57
Speaker 2: to talk to the organizers behind that. Quick Texas, congratulations
• 11:00
Speaker 2: on your Hall of Fame induction. I remember when you
• 11:03
Speaker 2: were just a little guy in the big city taking
• 11:05
Speaker 2: over the big shoes of Danny Jones at 9 a.m.,
• 11:07
Speaker 2: hoping to continue listening to you for several more years.
• 11:10
Speaker 2: I do appreciate that very much. And look, you know,
• 11:14
Speaker 2: I said this last night to some people. at the
• 11:18
Speaker 2: Broadcasting Hall of Fame induction. I started doing this show
• 11:21
Speaker 2: in November of 2020. Now, go back in your Wayback
• 11:25
Speaker 2: Machine and think about, I'm sorry, not November, Dave, it's May.
• 11:29
Speaker 2: Calendar's hard. May of 2020. Think about what was going
• 11:33
Speaker 2: on in May of 2020. The entire country pretty much
• 11:35
Speaker 2: was locked down because of COVID. We had the presidential
• 11:38
Speaker 2: election going on. So if you're going to start a
• 11:43
Speaker 2: talk show that touches on politics from time to time.
• 11:47
Speaker 2: What a time to start it. Taking over for Danny
• 11:50
Speaker 2: Jones as well. It was the day after Memorial Day
• 11:54
Speaker 2: in 2020 is when I took over doing 580 Live.
• 11:57
Speaker 2: And of course, I have enjoyed it so much. And
• 12:00
Speaker 2: I appreciate all of you listening. We'll take a break.
• 12:03
Speaker 2: We're talking food, which is my favorite subject. When we
• 12:06
Speaker 2: come back on The Voice of Charleston, WCHS. Brought to
• 12:09
Speaker 2: you by the Eric J. Tarr Family Businesses.
• 12:12
Speaker 1: Eric J. Tarr Family Businesses have been creating jobs in
• 12:15
Speaker 1: West Virginia since 1997.
• 12:18
Speaker 8: For over 20 years, Dr.
• 12:20
Speaker 9: Tom Takubo has cared for West Virginians at their hardest
• 12:23
Speaker 9: moments as a lung and critical care doctor right here
• 12:27
Speaker 9: at home. In the state Senate, he brings that same approach. Listen,
• 12:31
Speaker 9: diagnose the problem, fix it. Lower costs, better care, good
• 12:36
Speaker 9: jobs that keep our kids here. Not partisan politics, just results.
• 12:42
  Speaker 5: Dr.
• 12:42
Speaker 9: Tom Takubo. Because West Virginia's people come first.
• 12:46

• 14:10
Speaker 2: about some biscuits and gravy? Third annual Biscuit and Gravy
• 14:13
Speaker 2: Bowl happening Saturday, November the 14th at Capital Market, 10 a.m.
• 14:17
Speaker 2: Fundraiser for Programs at South Ridge Church. Joanne Romeo joins
• 14:21
Speaker 2: us to talk about it, along with Mark Harper from
• 14:22
Speaker 2: Bricks and Barrels Restaurant. Joanne, how are you doing?
• 14:25
Speaker 11: I'm good. How are you doing?
• 14:26
Speaker 2: I'm doing fine. Mark, welcome to the show.
• 14:29
  Speaker 10: Welcome.
• 14:30
Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. I appreciate you being here. Um, Joanna,
• 14:33
Speaker 2: talk about the origins of this, the third annual. How
• 14:35
Speaker 2: did this whole thing come about?
• 14:37
Speaker 11: So I was an event planner for March of Dimes.
• 14:39
Speaker 11: I attended a breakfast event in Ashland, Kentucky called the
• 14:42
Speaker 11: Biscuits and Gravy Bowl. And so I'm like, well, why
• 14:44
Speaker 11: doesn't Charleston have a Biscuit and Gravy Bowl event? Because
• 14:48
Speaker 11: y'all have like all kinds of food events. So yeah,
• 14:50
Speaker 11: I just thought it would be a great family experience
• 14:52
Speaker 11: to have and community experience to have.
• 14:55
Speaker 2: And I mean, you first approached me about it, I
• 14:58
Speaker 2: think the first year, uh, And you asked me if
• 15:02
Speaker 2: I wanted to be a part of it, and I said,
• 15:03
Speaker 2: of course, because it's helping out a good cause, and
• 15:06
Speaker 2: there's biscuits and gravy. And I've been able to judge it,
• 15:10
  Speaker 2: serve as a judge, and I don't know if I'm
• 15:11
  Speaker 2: judging this year.
• 15:12
Speaker 11: You're on my list, yes.
• 15:14
Speaker 2: But I'll be there regardless. By the way, our general manager,
• 15:17
Speaker 2: Jared Parsons, told me when I was talking to him
• 15:21
Speaker 2: a couple weeks ago about some of the different promotions
• 15:23
Speaker 2: coming up, he said to me, I want to be
• 15:26
Speaker 2: a judge of this. So the boss wants to be
• 15:29
Speaker 2: a part of it. So if I have to give
• 15:30
Speaker 2: up my spot for the boss, I will because he
• 15:33
  Speaker 2: signs my paychecks.
• 15:35
Speaker 11: Well, I'll see if I can work both of them.
• 15:36
  Speaker 6: All right.
• 15:37
Speaker 2: It sounds good. Mark, talk about your involvement in this.
• 15:40
Speaker 10: Well, I've been going to Southridge Church for about four
• 15:43
Speaker 10: or five years. And I've been the general manager at
• 15:48
Speaker 10: Bricks and Barrels for about five years now also, kind
• 15:51
Speaker 10: of about the same time. Um, and even though we
• 15:54
Speaker 10: don't do breakfast stuff, typically, um, they approached me about it, uh,
• 16:00
Speaker 10: last year, we weren't in it the first year. Um,
• 16:02
Speaker 10: they asked me about it last year. And even though
• 16:05
Speaker 10: we don't do breakfast, I got some pretty talented, uh,
• 16:08
Speaker 10: cooks over there. So I figured we could come up with, uh,
• 16:11
Speaker 10: something to at least, uh, be competitive, uh, in the competition.
• 16:15
Speaker 10: So we decided to go ahead that way, kind of.
• 16:19
Speaker 10: unites my church family and my work family and kind
• 16:22
Speaker 10: of gets both uh together there.
• 16:25
Speaker 2: I mean you got fantastic food over there and even
• 16:27
Speaker 2: though you may not do biscuits and gravy on a
• 16:30
Speaker 2: regular basis i mean you should be able to pick
• 16:33
  Speaker 2: up on it.
• 16:33
Speaker 11: Pretty well by the way because he actually tied in
• 16:36
Speaker 11: first place last year with.
• 16:37
Speaker 2: The judges Oh, did you?
• 16:40
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 16:40
  Speaker 12: Yeah.
• 16:41
Speaker 10: So we tied for first. So we did all right.
• 16:42
Speaker 10: Like I said, I got a couple of pretty good
• 16:44
Speaker 10: chefs and cooks over there. So I figured they could
• 16:46
Speaker 10: whip something up that would be pretty good.
• 16:47
Speaker 2: We're going to talk about how people can enter this
• 16:49
Speaker 2: if they want to. But you being a chef, in
• 16:53
Speaker 2: your mind, what is it that makes good biscuits and gravy?
• 16:56
  Speaker 2: In your mind.
• 16:56
Speaker 10: Good biscuits and gravy.
• 16:57
  Speaker 2: Look, it's subjective.
• 16:59
Speaker 10: Personally, I feel like, yes, you want to have your
• 17:02
Speaker 10: own touch to it. But I feel like a lot
• 17:04
Speaker 10: of people try to do too much to it. I agree.
• 17:07
Speaker 10: People like classic biscuits and gravy.
• 17:09
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 17:11
Speaker 10: A little a little twist here and there, you know,
• 17:13
Speaker 10: to make it your own. But don't get too crazy
• 17:16
Speaker 10: with it. You know, I think that's the best approach
• 17:18
  Speaker 10: to have.
• 17:19
  Speaker 4: I agree.
• 17:19
Speaker 2: And again, it's subjective. Everybody likes what they like. But
• 17:22
Speaker 2: I mean, I'm a down home Logan County boy. So
• 17:24
Speaker 2: just simple biscuits and gravy is fine with me. I'm a.
• 17:27
Speaker 2: I'm big on the pepper. I mean, no matter how
• 17:29
Speaker 2: much pepper you put on it, Mark, I'm going to
• 17:32
Speaker 2: add more pepper to it because I got to have
• 17:33
Speaker 2: pepper in mine. Now, how does the whole thing work
• 17:36
Speaker 2: for the public, Joanna?
• 17:38
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 17:38
Speaker 11: So you can register by going to src.life, click on
• 17:42
Speaker 11: the calendar and select event. for the biscuit and gravy
• 17:45
Speaker 11: bowl or you can go to the facebook event with
• 17:47
Speaker 11: the capital market and they're also promoting it with us.
• 17:49
Speaker 2: And uh and so when people show up over there
• 17:52
Speaker 2: i mean do they is it the ticketed type system
• 17:54
Speaker 2: how does the thing.
• 17:55
Speaker 11: Work for the public so pre-sale will end the day
• 17:56
  Speaker 11: before on november 13th at noon so they're 15 pre-sale
• 18:00
Speaker 11: for adults and five for children and then at the
• 18:02
Speaker 11: door will be 20 and 10 for children and they'll
• 18:05
Speaker 11: get a bag at registration with their tokens their bracelets
• 18:08
Speaker 11: on and then how to vote and then a list
• 18:09
Speaker 11: of all the food contenders so.
• 18:11
Speaker 2: Okay, and so how many contenders do you have as
• 18:13
  Speaker 2: of now?
• 18:13
Speaker 11: So right now we have nine pros and four amateurs.
• 18:16
Speaker 2: Okay, how do you divide it up between pros and amateurs?
• 18:18
Speaker 2: Are they competing with each other? Do you have different categories?
• 18:20
Speaker 11: Yes, so here's your new thing. The new thing. Yeah,
• 18:23
Speaker 11: so judges this year, they're doing top three for pros,
• 18:26
Speaker 11: top two for the amateurs, and you're going to vote
• 18:28
Speaker 11: best in presentation who decorates the best. And we're adding
• 18:32
Speaker 11: a category called Best Beyond the Biscuits. So anything outside
• 18:35
Speaker 11: of biscuits and gravy will be their category.
• 18:36
Speaker 2: Okay. What are we looking for in that? I mean,
• 18:39
  Speaker 2: just anything?
• 18:39
Speaker 11: Yeah, anything and everything. That's breakfast edible.
• 18:42
Speaker 2: Okay. Well, and again, you could eat whatever, you know,
• 18:45
Speaker 2: for breakfast. I guess it's breakfast food.
• 18:47
  Speaker 1: Yep.
• 18:47
Speaker 2: Did you grow up eating them biscuits and gravy? I
• 18:49
Speaker 2: don't know your background. I mean, were you a biscuit
• 18:50
  Speaker 2: and gravy person?
• 18:51
Speaker 11: Okay, here's the funny thing. I don't eat breakfast, but
• 18:54
Speaker 11: I do for this event, and I do when I
• 18:56
Speaker 11: feel like the Southern comfort food.
• 18:59
Speaker 2: Okay, because I was going to say, growing up in
• 19:01
Speaker 2: Southern West Virginia like I did, I mean, biscuits and
• 19:04
Speaker 2: gravy was a staple, you know. I'm like my dad.
• 19:08
Speaker 2: I mean, this is going to seem like blasphemy to
• 19:10
Speaker 2: a lot of people. I love biscuits and gravy, but
• 19:12
Speaker 2: I'm happy with toast and gravy too. That's the way
• 19:15
Speaker 2: my dad preferred it, you know. I wish my mom
• 19:18
  Speaker 2: lived closer.
• 19:19
Speaker 11: She makes a mad biscuit and gravy.
• 19:20
Speaker 2: Okay, what does your mom do that makes it so good?
• 19:22
Speaker 11: She uses real sausage grease and sausage, like leftovers and
• 19:26
Speaker 11: stores it and then cooks it.
• 19:27
Speaker 2: By the way, if Millie Snyder, our nutrition expert that
• 19:30
Speaker 2: is on the show, Millie, you may want to just
• 19:31
Speaker 2: turn the radio off right now. Because, look, everything in moderation.
• 19:37
Speaker 11: One and two ounce servings.
• 19:38
Speaker 2: Everything in moderation, including moderation. You know, that's the way
• 19:42
Speaker 2: I live. My mother-in-law, God bless her, my late mother-in-law
• 19:45
Speaker 2: made the best biscuits and gravy I ever had. I
• 19:48
Speaker 2: don't know what made it so good. but it was good.
• 19:51
Speaker 2: It was really, really good. And my wife makes good
• 19:54
Speaker 2: biscuits and gravy as well. So I want to talk
• 19:57
Speaker 2: about the fundraisers that your church does, because this is
• 19:59
Speaker 2: not just a fundraiser for the church per se. It's
• 20:03
Speaker 2: about the programs that you offer. Talk about that.
• 20:06
Speaker 10: Yeah, so basically we're doing this to raise money for
• 20:10
Speaker 10: our other programs that we have in our church. One
• 20:14
Speaker 10: of the programs we work with is Recovery Point Charleston,
• 20:18
Speaker 10: and it's a recovery point that has 125 ladies in it.
• 20:22
Speaker 10: And we offer vans to come pick them up for
• 20:23
Speaker 10: church every Sunday. We do a yearly beauty day with
• 20:34
Speaker 10: them where we basically they sign up. We go and
• 20:40
Speaker 10: pick them up, bring them to the church, let them
• 20:41
Speaker 10: get their hair done, their nails done. All that stuff.
• 20:45
Speaker 10: Just let them know that people care about them and
• 20:48
Speaker 10: they're loved by God and by us. And just that's
• 20:53
Speaker 10: that's one of the big, big programs we do. Also,
• 20:57
Speaker 10: probably my favorite program. It's a brand new one. We
• 21:00
Speaker 10: just started this year for the first time is Project Kicks.
• 21:05
Speaker 10: We gave away 500 pairs of shoes to kids at
• 21:09
Speaker 10: local elementaries. junior highs and high schools. Basically, they were
• 21:13
Speaker 10: all donated or bought by the church. So we felt
• 21:18
Speaker 10: that was a big need because, you know, kids don't,
• 21:20
Speaker 10: when the start of the new school year, you don't
• 21:23
Speaker 10: want to, you want everybody to have a new pair
• 21:25
Speaker 10: of shoes. So, you know, a lot of people that
• 21:27
Speaker 10: instigates bullying and stuff like that. So we figured we
• 21:30
Speaker 10: could reach out to the community, let them know that
• 21:32
Speaker 10: we care about them and want them to have the
• 21:34
Speaker 10: best experience possible. We also do impact schools program. which
• 21:40
Speaker 10: we provide two weeks for 180 families to six local
• 21:47
Speaker 10: elementary schools during Christmas break. So basically it ensures that
• 21:52
Speaker 10: all the kids have food during the Christmas break. We
• 21:56
Speaker 10: also cook for the University of Charleston every home game.
• 22:00
Speaker 10: We feed the team the night before the game, make
• 22:03
Speaker 10: sure they're fed and ready to go for their game.
• 22:06
Speaker 10: We also have a big... imprint on, uh, alum elementary school.
• 22:14
Speaker 10: We do, we help with like their fall festival and, uh,
• 22:18
Speaker 10: stuff like that. Um, we do a bunch of events
• 22:23
Speaker 10: for the kids, like egg hunts. We did a fall carnival. Um,
• 22:27
Speaker 10: and these, these fundraiser stuff is how we do this.
• 22:32
Speaker 10: I mean, obviously, you know, people from the church donating helps,
• 22:35
Speaker 10: But you can always use more money. The more money
• 22:39
Speaker 10: you get, the more you can do. And honestly, our
• 22:43
Speaker 10: biggest thing is our church wants to be a community
• 22:46
Speaker 10: that wants to be a church that our community can't
• 22:48
Speaker 10: live without. And the only way to be that is
• 22:51
Speaker 10: to get out in the community and provide events and
• 22:54
  Speaker 10: things like this.
• 22:55
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 22:55
Speaker 2: I want to ask about the sponsors. So are you
• 22:58
Speaker 2: still in need of sponsors, Joanna?
• 23:00
Speaker 11: Yeah, we'll always say yes to sponsors.
• 23:02
Speaker 2: You show up that morning. We'll make a sign with
• 23:04
Speaker 2: a Sharpie if we have to.
• 23:05
  Speaker 10: Exactly.
• 23:06
Speaker 2: Do you have some sponsors already that you need to mention?
• 23:08
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 23:09
Speaker 11: So we want to give a shout out to Incova Insurance,
• 23:11
Speaker 11: Casto Construction Crew, WVRC Media Charleston, and then Dave Allen,
• 23:16
Speaker 11: the host of the Dave Allen, and the co-host of
• 23:20
Speaker 11: the Metro News Midday. And then we also have a
• 23:22
Speaker 11: new one, the Airbnb with the Romeos.
• 23:25
Speaker 2: Oh, that sounds familiar. That last name sounds familiar. What's
• 23:28
  Speaker 2: that all about?
• 23:29
Speaker 11: So my husband and I launched an Airbnb last year
• 23:32
Speaker 11: and started it last October, and we didn't realize how
• 23:34
Speaker 11: successful it would be. So that's going to be like
• 23:36
Speaker 11: our main career focus in the future. So we just
• 23:38
Speaker 11: started our second one.
• 23:39
  Speaker 4: Really?
• 23:40
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 23:40
Speaker 11: And they're in mid-September, and all 30 days almost stay
• 23:44
Speaker 11: booked in both of them already.
• 23:45
  Speaker 2: That's amazing, isn't it?
• 23:46
  Speaker 1: Yes.
• 23:46
Speaker 2: Because people think of Airbnb, and we're getting off on
• 23:49
Speaker 2: a tangent here, but people think of Airbnb is just
• 23:52
Speaker 2: at the beach per se. I got a buddy of
• 23:55
Speaker 2: mine who travels a lot for work, a lot. And
• 23:58
Speaker 2: if given the choice between staying at a five-star hotel
• 24:00
Speaker 2: and an Airbnb, he'll take the Airbnb every time.
• 24:03
Speaker 11: And they both have their own private hot tubs and fireplaces.
• 24:05
Speaker 11: So there you go. What more can you ask for
• 24:07
  Speaker 11: in the mountains?
• 24:07
Speaker 2: Where are they located?
• 24:08
Speaker 11: On the north side of Charleston up a mountain. So
• 24:10
Speaker 11: you don't even feel like you're near a city.
• 24:12
Speaker 2: Okay. All right. Sounds good.
• 24:14
Speaker 11: I do want to give a few shout outs to
• 24:15
Speaker 11: some restaurants participating. We have Fazio's, Bricks and Barrels, Carver Culinary,
• 24:21
Speaker 11: We have a new one called the Goldenrod Kitchen. And
• 24:24
Speaker 11: then Ursa's Brew Works, Coyer Diner. So there's a few
• 24:27
Speaker 11: to name to start off with.
• 24:29
Speaker 2: Coyer Diner. Good stuff. Excellent stuff there. All those places
• 24:32
Speaker 2: have excellent stuff, but Coyer Diner especially has some really
• 24:35
Speaker 2: good stuff, especially breakfast. I've had breakfast there about a
• 24:37
Speaker 2: month or so ago. Even though I had it with
• 24:39
Speaker 2: Tony the tailor, you know, it was still, I got
• 24:42
Speaker 2: through it somehow. But you guys, I mean, you guys
• 24:45
Speaker 2: do great things in the community. And that's why we
• 24:48
Speaker 2: are so happy to be involved in this. And look, we,
• 24:51
Speaker 2: We want to make sure people realize, and I want
• 24:53
Speaker 2: to say this without making it sound terrible, but the
• 24:58
Speaker 2: programs you're talking about just aren't related to your church.
• 25:01
Speaker 2: I mean, that's a very worthwhile cause, but like you said, Mark,
• 25:06
Speaker 2: you guys are in the community doing things. You just
• 25:09
Speaker 2: happen to be a church, and that's great. But that's
• 25:12
Speaker 2: what I love about what you guys do, because there's
• 25:15
Speaker 2: always something going on in the community that you guys
• 25:18
Speaker 2: are giving back to.
• 25:18
  Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
• 25:19
Speaker 2: And that's one of the reasons why we are very,
• 25:21
Speaker 2: very happy to be a part of it.
• 25:23
  Speaker 13: All right.
• 25:23
Speaker 2: So let me see. What do we cover to get sponsors?
• 25:26
Speaker 2: People want to be a sponsor. What's the best way
• 25:27
  Speaker 2: to get involved?
• 25:30
Speaker 11: Just the same way. You can either go to the SRC.live,
• 25:32
Speaker 11: click the calendar in the event, or you can contact
• 25:34
Speaker 11: me directly. My phone number is 606-465-1088. That would be
• 25:39
Speaker 11: the best way for Joanna Romeo.
• 25:40
Speaker 2: Okay. And we'll have you on as we get a
• 25:42
Speaker 2: little bit closer to the event coming. It started out
• 25:48
Speaker 2: kind of small. I was there for the first one.
• 25:50
Speaker 2: And then it just keeps getting bigger and better. And plus,
• 25:52
Speaker 2: you're in capital market. You start at 10 a.m. on
• 25:55
Speaker 2: a Saturday. Most people, that's when they're going to have
• 25:58
Speaker 2: a big breakfast. It's usually on the weekend at some point.
• 26:01
Speaker 2: So it's one of the greatest environments around Charleston. It's
• 26:05
Speaker 2: just an all-around good time. Do you still need judges?
• 26:08
Speaker 2: Because you let me sign up, and I think Jared's
• 26:10
Speaker 2: going to be a judge at GM. Do you still
• 26:12
  Speaker 2: need judges?
• 26:14
Speaker 11: Maybe not, but, I mean, if one wants to join,
• 26:16
Speaker 11: I can maybe add one more.
• 26:17
Speaker 2: Well, we can have an alternative.
• 26:18
Speaker 11: Yeah, we can have a backup.
• 26:19
  Speaker 13: All right.
• 26:20
Speaker 2: I mentioned Tony the tailor earlier. He and I were
• 26:22
Speaker 2: out there last year. Is he there this year, too,
• 26:23
Speaker 2: or do you know?
• 26:24
Speaker 11: I have no idea.
• 26:25
Speaker 2: All right. Well, Tony, if you're listening, guess what? Show up.
• 26:28
Speaker 2: Show up. We had some good folks last year, and
• 26:31
Speaker 2: from the radio station, too. So we love getting involved
• 26:34
Speaker 2: in this. We had a text here. I want to
• 26:35
Speaker 2: get your take on this, Mark. A text said, the
• 26:37
Speaker 2: best sausage gravy on planet Earth can be found at McDonald's,
• 26:40
  Speaker 2: hands down.
• 26:42
Speaker 11: I kind of agree. Sorry.
• 26:45
Speaker 2: Mark, as a chef? There's a place for it? Could
• 26:50
  Speaker 2: you say that?
• 26:51
Speaker 10: I mean, yeah, their biscuits and gravy is pretty good, but.
• 26:54
Speaker 1: But what is it?
• 26:55
Speaker 2: That's the thing I'm asking. What exactly is it? Look,
• 26:59
Speaker 2: I like it as well. I like it as well.
• 27:01
Speaker 2: That's one of the things I love about my buddy,
• 27:02
Speaker 2: Chef Paul. Chef Paul's on with Hotline. every uh monday
• 27:06
Speaker 2: and i usually listen to him in the office as
• 27:08
Speaker 2: he said he said look there's nothing wrong with a
• 27:10
Speaker 2: little fast food every now and then there's a place
• 27:12
Speaker 2: for mcdonald's and wendy's and all these other places i
• 27:15
Speaker 2: would not go as far as that texture did to
• 27:16
Speaker 2: say it's the best sausage gravy.
• 27:18
Speaker 10: Yeah that's that's a little much for me but.
• 27:20
Speaker 2: Hey to each to each to each there are i'm
• 27:22
Speaker 2: gonna give you a chance to do a little thing
• 27:24
Speaker 2: for your restaurant there, separate from the Biscuits and Barrels.
• 27:27
  Speaker 6: All right.
• 27:28
Speaker 2: Tell us about Biscuits and Barrels. I'm giving you a
• 27:29
  Speaker 2: free commercial.
• 27:30
Speaker 10: Yeah, there we go.
• 27:31
Speaker 2: I hope the manager's not listening right now. But go ahead.
• 27:33
Speaker 10: Tell me a little bit about Biscuits and Barrels. So,
• 27:35
Speaker 10: like I said, we aren't a breakfast place. We are
• 27:38
Speaker 10: definitely a dinner place. For people that don't know, we
• 27:41
Speaker 10: are located right across the Go-Mart Ballpark in the brick building.
• 27:47
Speaker 10: Biscuits and Barrels, hence the name, right across from the ballpark.
• 27:50
  Speaker 14: We are.
• 27:53
Speaker 10: Pretty much like a casual fine dining, uh, restaurant. Um, so,
• 28:00
Speaker 10: you know, like we provide good date nights, business meetings, uh,
• 28:05
Speaker 10: type environment, but we're also casual enough if you just
• 28:07
Speaker 10: want to bring the family out and kids out, um,
• 28:10
Speaker 10: that we pretty much try to, uh, be comfortable for
• 28:13
Speaker 10: any type of environment that you might want. Um, and
• 28:17
Speaker 10: we have great food. We have, uh, great, great chefs. Um, we, um,
• 28:22
Speaker 10: Pretty much our steak and seafood is what we're known for.
• 28:26
Speaker 2: You had me at steak and seafood.
• 28:27
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 28:29
Speaker 10: You can't go wrong with that. If you've got somebody
• 28:30
Speaker 10: that knows how to cook it, then it's pretty good.
• 28:34
Speaker 2: I'm going to admit I've not had a steak at
• 28:36
Speaker 2: your restaurant. I'm not very particular about a lot of foods.
• 28:39
Speaker 2: Joanna's known me for a long time. She'll tell you
• 28:41
Speaker 2: I'm not very particular. However, with my steak, I want
• 28:45
Speaker 2: it medium rare. With the emphasis on rare, eventually as
• 28:49
Speaker 2: I get older, I'm just going to go punch a
• 28:51
Speaker 2: cow in the mouth and just start eating because I
• 28:53
  Speaker 2: want it rare.
• 28:55
Speaker 11: I can vouch for him, actually. I've had your steak
• 28:57
Speaker 11: every bite, and I like it rare, mooing, and catching.
• 29:00
Speaker 2: All right. There you go.
• 29:01
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 29:02
  Speaker 2: It sounds good.
• 29:03
Speaker 11: And it was good.
• 29:04
Speaker 10: All right. Yeah, you come try one. We'll get you
• 29:06
Speaker 10: squared away. What's the most popular thing on the menu?
• 29:08
Speaker 10: Most popular thing on the menu?
• 29:09
Speaker 2: Two or three things.
• 29:11
Speaker 10: Definitely our Parmesan and crusted chicken is a very popular item. Uh,
• 29:18
Speaker 10: our fillets, um, and probably I would say our scallops
• 29:23
Speaker 10: are probably the top, the top three, uh, like unique
• 29:27
Speaker 10: things that no one else had other than the steak, obviously, uh,
• 29:31
Speaker 10: that anyone else really has that, uh, I feel like
• 29:34
Speaker 10: people really come to the restaurant to, to get.
• 29:36
Speaker 2: All right. Steak and scallops.
• 29:38
Speaker 10: But we got a big menu. and everything on it's good.
• 29:41
Speaker 11: Listen, the red snapper is the die for and the
• 29:42
  Speaker 11: scallops are.
• 29:43
Speaker 10: Also, we have a fried green tomato Napoleon appetizer. It's
• 29:47
Speaker 10: a very unique dish that is very popular that some
• 29:50
Speaker 10: people drive Over an hour for just to come eat that.
• 29:53
Speaker 10: So that's another good one.
• 29:55
  Speaker 2: It sounds good.
• 29:55
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 29:56
Speaker 2: Let's get back to the biscuits and gravy. Give us
• 29:58
Speaker 2: all the details. Joanna, the time, the date, capital market.
• 30:02
Speaker 2: Take it from there.
• 30:03
  Speaker 5: Yes.
• 30:03
Speaker 11: So it's going to be the second Saturday, November 14th.
• 30:05
  Speaker 11: It'll start at 10 a.m. And we'll stop serving food
• 30:08
  Speaker 11: around 12 to 12, 15 p.m. Voting stops. And then
• 30:10
Speaker 11: all the winners will be announced from 12, 15 to 12,
• 30:12
Speaker 11: 30 p.m. All right. All right.
• 30:15
Speaker 2: Mark, it's a pleasure to get to meet you. Joanne,
• 30:17
Speaker 2: it's always great to see you, and I will see
• 30:19
Speaker 2: you over there. Please take care of my general manager.
• 30:21
Speaker 2: Please let him be a judge, even if you've got
• 30:23
Speaker 2: to give him my spot.
• 30:24
  Speaker 11: Because I'm hungry.
• 30:25
Speaker 2: Because we're going to be over there anyway. Our stations
• 30:27
Speaker 2: will be over there, whether I'm judging or not. I'll
• 30:29
Speaker 2: be over there probably with 98.7 to Mountain Wild, a
• 30:32
Speaker 2: wonderful classic rock. Our station caters to people everywhere. That
• 30:37
Speaker 2: need a heavy breakfast the next morning. If you'd see
• 30:40
Speaker 2: where I'm going with that, all right? I appreciate you
• 30:43
Speaker 2: both being here. Thanks a lot.
• 30:44
  Speaker 11: Thank you.
• 30:44
Speaker 2: Hang out with me here just one second. Wait a minute.
• 30:47
Speaker 2: Is that Philadelphia Eagles thing I see?
• 30:49
  Speaker 1: Yep.
• 30:49
Speaker 2: You seriously wore an Eagles gear in my studio.
• 30:53
  Speaker 15: Yes, I did.
• 30:53
  Speaker 2: The ultimate cowboy.
• 30:55
Speaker 10: I did not know that, but now I do.
• 30:57

• 33:55
Speaker 12: the Logan County coal camp kid who knew at 8.
• 33:57
Speaker 2: He wanted to be on the radio.
• 33:59
Speaker 12: The Hall of Fame induction, Saturday at 6, then Ohio

• 34:17
Speaker 2: That's the sounds of the Amos Steel Band. They are
• 34:19
Speaker 2: the official band of the Dave Allen Show. Trick or
• 34:22
Speaker 2: beat with 107.3 to beat back at Go Mart Ballpark
• 34:24
Speaker 2: tomorrow night. Two sessions, 1-6-7. The other 7-30 to 8-30
• 34:28
Speaker 2: presented by Salango Law. Admission is free, but you must
• 34:30
Speaker 2: have tickets to enter. Tickets are available at our business offices,
• 34:34
Speaker 2: 1111 Virginia Street East in Charleston. And here's the thing.
• 34:37
Speaker 2: I just went out during the break. I was talking
• 34:39
Speaker 2: to the curator of tickets, Antoine, out here at the
• 34:42
Speaker 2: front desk. There are a grand total of three tickets,
• 34:47
Speaker 2: three tickets left for the first session, about 20 remain
• 34:52
Speaker 2: for the second session. So I'm going to say by lunchtime,
• 34:54
Speaker 2: all those tickets are going to be gone. So if
• 34:56
Speaker 2: you want to go to trick or beat, and once
• 34:58
Speaker 2: those tickets are gone, they gone, uh, you need to
• 35:01
Speaker 2: get in here to our offices. We're open, uh, you know,
• 35:04
Speaker 2: nine to five or so, uh, Monday through Friday, 11, 11,
• 35:06
Speaker 2: Virginia street, Eastern Charleston. But again, uh, Three tickets remain.
• 35:11
  Speaker 6: Three.
• 35:12
Speaker 2: A grand total of three tickets remain for Session 1.
• 35:15
Speaker 2: About 20 for Session 2. So you need to get
• 35:17
Speaker 2: those tickets for the next couple of hours because I
• 35:19
Speaker 2: have a feeling this time tomorrow I'm going to be
• 35:21
Speaker 2: saying there are zero tickets left. Quickly, before we get
• 35:23
Speaker 2: to Danny, I do want to say thank you to
• 35:25
Speaker 2: all the kind words for people reaching out to me
• 35:28
Speaker 2: about getting inducted last night to the West Virginia Broadcasting
• 35:30
Speaker 2: Hall of Fame. Nice ceremony for me and the six
• 35:33
Speaker 2: other inductees. Appreciate it. Looking forward to continuing 38 years.
• 35:38
Speaker 2: Got 38 more or 40 left to go, I think.
• 35:43
Speaker 2: And as you just heard on the promo there, they're
• 35:45
Speaker 2: actually going to broadcast the Hall of Fame, the audio
• 35:48
Speaker 2: of the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies this coming Saturday
• 35:52
Speaker 2: night here on WCHS. I will not be a midday today.
• 35:55
Speaker 2: I'm heading down to Logan County for the funeral of
• 35:57
Speaker 2: my stepmother today. I appreciate the thoughts and prayers there
• 36:00
Speaker 2: as well. I will be back with you tomorrow on
• 36:02
Speaker 2: the local show tomorrow. Trans-Siberian Orchestra coming to the Vandalia
• 36:05
Speaker 2: Health Center. That's right. I said it. I'm still working
• 36:08
Speaker 2: on it. Formerly the Coliseum and Convention Center. We'll talk
• 36:10
Speaker 2: to another member of the band on the show tomorrow.
• 36:12
Speaker 2: Also on the show tomorrow, Delegate J.B. Akers, who's hoping
• 36:15
Speaker 2: you will re-elect him to the House. He'll give his
• 36:19
Speaker 2: campaign speech on the show tomorrow. And speaking of which,
• 36:21
Speaker 2: if you're a candidate for office and you want that
• 36:23
Speaker 2: free interview with me, you better hurry. Very, very, very
• 36:26
Speaker 2: limited spots are available. Email dave.allenwvradio.com, dave.allenwvradio.com. Let's bring in
• 36:33
Speaker 2: our good friend Danny Jones. How are you, my friend?
• 36:35
Speaker 6: I'm doing real well. And I'm speaking as a former
• 36:40
Speaker 6: employee of Tudor's and one that made biscuits and gravy.
• 36:46
Speaker 6: I've got my preference.
• 36:49
Speaker 1: Now, wait a minute.
• 36:49
Speaker 2: You worked at Tudor's, too?
• 36:50
  Speaker 6: 2002.
• 36:54
  Speaker 8: You worked at.
• 36:55
  Speaker 2: Tudor's in 2002, Danny?
• 36:58
Speaker 6: I worked there in 2001 and 2002 for six months.
• 37:04
Speaker 2: How did you end up working at Tudor's?
• 37:07
Speaker 6: Well, I'm friends with Osho.
• 37:08
Speaker 2: Okay. But, I mean, most friends that are friends with
• 37:11
Speaker 2: Osho Crago don't go put on the apron and just
• 37:15
Speaker 2: start cooking at Tudor's. So you actually worked at Tudor's?
• 37:19
Speaker 6: I did that because I wanted to.
• 37:20
  Speaker 2: Well, obviously.
• 37:22
Speaker 6: I went to Madison once a week, but my job
• 37:26
Speaker 6: was franchise, and I helped set up the franchise.
• 37:30
Speaker 2: Oh, okay, okay. But you did it because you are
• 37:33
Speaker 2: a food guy. You did get behind the stove every
• 37:36
Speaker 2: now and then, right?
• 37:38
Speaker 6: Yeah, and I'm, you know, like I say, Osho and
• 37:40
  Speaker 6: I are friends. We're good buddies, and I think Tudor's
• 37:44
Speaker 6: has good biscuits and gravy.
• 37:46
Speaker 2: I do, too. And I'll tell you something else that
• 37:47
Speaker 2: Tudor's has that's very good that people don't think about
• 37:51
Speaker 2: is the hot dogs. I'm a big fan of the
• 37:53
Speaker 2: hot dogs at Tudor's.
• 37:55
Speaker 6: And the barbecue sandwich. Yeah.
• 37:58
Speaker 2: And my favorite biscuit there, and I've got to give
• 38:00
Speaker 2: him credit. Chris Lawrence turned me on to this. My
• 38:02
Speaker 2: favorite biscuit there is the Rocket. And they kind of
• 38:05
Speaker 2: take it on the menu. They have it on the menu.
• 38:07
Speaker 2: They don't have it on the menu. But the Rocket
• 38:09
Speaker 2: is the steak. It's like a country steak with the
• 38:12
Speaker 2: hash brown and the cheese and the egg and everything.
• 38:14
Speaker 2: The Rocket is without a doubt my favorite. So you're
• 38:16
  Speaker 2: out in Cali.
• 38:17
  Speaker 10: Go ahead.
• 38:17
  Speaker 2: Go ahead.
• 38:19
Speaker 6: I'm thundering her, but go ahead.
• 38:20
Speaker 2: Okay. So how are things out in Cali? You're back
• 38:23
Speaker 2: in California, my friend.
• 38:25
Speaker 6: Well, Pacific Coast Highway, which is highway number one, you know,
• 38:31
Speaker 6: runs all the way up down the coast. South of
• 38:34
  Speaker 6: where I am, it's flooded.
• 38:37
  Speaker 13: Oh.
• 38:37
  Speaker 6: So it's... it's got traffic jammed up and I don't
• 38:42
Speaker 6: know what caused the flood. If it's the ocean or,
• 38:45
  Speaker 6: you know, the waterway that I don't, I didn't ask.
• 38:49
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 38:50
Speaker 6: And I go to long beach once a day and,
• 38:55
Speaker 6: you know, that's all I need to do.
• 38:59
Speaker 2: So what's what are you watching politically these days? Because
• 39:04
Speaker 2: I guess I'll have you back on the show on my,
• 39:06
Speaker 2: are you good to come on the show with me
• 39:07
  Speaker 2: on Monday?
• 39:10
Speaker 6: I can come on Wednesday, David. I have to go
• 39:14
  Speaker 6: to the VA.
• 39:15
  Speaker 17: Oh, okay.
• 39:15
  Speaker 11: All right.
• 39:16
Speaker 2: All right. Well, we'll arrange for next Wednesday then. Well,
• 39:18
Speaker 2: that'll be good. That'll be the day after the election,
• 39:20
Speaker 2: so you can kind of give your analogy.
• 39:21
Speaker 6: Well, I'll tell you now. I mean, the Republicans are
• 39:25
Speaker 6: going to lose five seats in the Senate.
• 39:28
  Speaker 2: Okay. Five.
• 39:29
Speaker 6: Yeah. And hopefully they'll only lose 20 seats in the House.
• 39:35
Speaker 6: And they have to get new leadership in the House.
• 39:41
Speaker 6: Mike Johnson's really weak. And they had a good leader,
• 39:45
Speaker 6: but you had– When you have people like Nancy Mace
• 39:49
Speaker 6: and Matt Getz that get up and want to disrupt
• 39:54
Speaker 6: everything and they cost Kevin McCarthy the leadership, this is
• 40:00
  Speaker 6: what happens.
• 40:02
Speaker 2: How did we get to a place, Danny, in your opinion,
• 40:06
Speaker 2: and I'm going to say this as nicely as I can,
• 40:08
Speaker 2: and I'm talking on the national level. I'm not necessarily,
• 40:10
Speaker 2: although there are some, you know, there's a little bit
• 40:12
Speaker 2: of reverb here in West Virginia as well, but on
• 40:14
Speaker 2: the national level, How did we get to a place
• 40:16
Speaker 2: where everybody's crazy on the right and on the left?
• 40:20
  Speaker 2: I mean, these are a bunch. I mean, I'm going
• 40:21
Speaker 2: to be honest with you. My humble opinion, you have
• 40:23
Speaker 2: a bunch of lunatics on the left and the far left,
• 40:27
Speaker 2: far right in this country. How did we get to
• 40:29
  Speaker 2: this place?
• 40:31
Speaker 6: Well, I think the number one call is the guy
• 40:36
Speaker 6: in the White House.
• 40:38
  Speaker 2: Okay. Explain that.
• 40:40
Speaker 6: I think he creates craziness on both sides. And like
• 40:47
Speaker 6: I said, when I was on there, I think last
• 40:51
Speaker 6: week or the week before, our lives and this talk
• 40:56
Speaker 6: show and 12-step meetings, everything is a constant search for
• 40:59
Speaker 6: the truth. And unfortunately, people look at him and they
• 41:03
Speaker 6: see the truth. And nothing could be further from the truth.
• 41:09
Speaker 6: And it's costing— Elsa is going to win in Michigan.
• 41:13
  Speaker 12: Mm-hmm.
• 41:15
Speaker 6: Susan Collins is in trouble in Maine. Joe's been up
• 41:18
Speaker 6: there campaigning for her.
• 41:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I know that. Do you think that, and
• 41:25
Speaker 2: I've talked about this, about the way that Republican candidates
• 41:28
Speaker 2: are distancing themselves from President Trump, his approval ratings in
• 41:31
Speaker 2: the low 30s, depending on which poll that you look at.
• 41:34
Speaker 2: So Trump has been going to, quote unquote, safe areas
• 41:38
Speaker 2: where he's beloved. and he's avoiding these areas where there
• 41:41
Speaker 2: are tough races. I don't see a lot of advertising
• 41:45
Speaker 2: in West Virginia. Of course, granted, we're in the general
• 41:49
Speaker 2: election season, but I don't see a lot of Republicans
• 41:51
Speaker 2: in West Virginia wrapping themselves around Donald Trump the way
• 41:53
Speaker 2: that they did in the past. This time, a few
• 41:56
Speaker 2: years ago, like I said yesterday, it was a contest
• 41:58
Speaker 2: between who's the Trumpiest, me or you. I like you more. No,
• 42:01
Speaker 2: I like you more. No, he likes me more. You
• 42:03
Speaker 2: don't see a heck of a lot of that in
• 42:04
  Speaker 2: West Virginia now.
• 42:06
Speaker 6: We are one of three states that still support Trump.
• 42:12
Speaker 6: And Wyoming and Idaho and West Virginia, the three states
• 42:16
Speaker 6: that have him in the positive column. I mean, his
• 42:20
Speaker 6: numbers are almost down in Nixon territory. And you said, well,
• 42:25
Speaker 6: he goes to safe states. He's going to safe states, David,
• 42:29
Speaker 6: because his candidates are in trouble. When you put up
• 42:32
  Speaker 6: people like.
• 42:35
Speaker 6: Uh, Paxton in Texas. Are you kidding me? You had
• 42:39
Speaker 6: a safe seat there. You had John Cornyn. They didn't
• 42:45
Speaker 6: want a safe seat. They don't want to win. You know, they,
• 42:51
Speaker 6: they don't, they don't want to win.
• 42:54
Speaker 2: We had a text here said, and I can't say
• 42:56
Speaker 2: what they referred to, but they said, Matt, uh, I mean,
• 42:58
Speaker 2: let me just clean up. Matt, uh, Matt Gates is
• 43:00
Speaker 2: a blank meaning bad person. He ruined the House, and
• 43:04
Speaker 2: now he's a nobody. He was a bad guy. Your
• 43:06
  Speaker 2: take on that?
• 43:07
Speaker 6: And Trump wanted to make him Attorney General. I mean,
• 43:12
Speaker 6: you couldn't make this up. And instead of having James
• 43:17
Speaker 6: Mattis as Secretary of Defense, you've got that... You've got
• 43:23
Speaker 6: that philandering drunk. Texas.
• 43:29
  Speaker 11: I mean.
• 43:30
Speaker 6: It's a joke. It's laughable. You see, Trump wants people
• 43:36
Speaker 6: to tell him what he wants to hear, not what
• 43:39
Speaker 6: he needs to hear.
• 43:40
  Speaker 12: Yeah.

• 46:38
Speaker 2: has never been more clear in his assessments of the
• 46:41
Speaker 2: MAGA GOP. Again, Obama was a center-right president, and Biden
• 46:46
Speaker 2: won more Republicans than Trump did in 2020. I'd say
• 46:49
Speaker 2: the radical left is doing just fine this time around.
• 46:52
Speaker 2: You would say what, Danny?
• 46:54
  Speaker 6: Well, I don't think Obama was center-right. I think he
• 46:57
Speaker 6: was center-left, and I like President Obama. I got to
• 47:01
Speaker 6: ride in the car with him. He was very kind,
• 47:04
Speaker 6: very nice. But he's not for Israel. And he's center left,
• 47:10
Speaker 6: but he's, I mean, he spoke English and he wasn't hateful.
• 47:17
Speaker 6: And he's a good man. But two Republicans, you're one
• 47:24
Speaker 6: of them, you're going to be on your show. If
• 47:25
Speaker 6: we could all have Republicans like the Kubo and Mike
• 47:29
Speaker 6: JB Acres, then you'd have a winning party.

Speaker 2: a compliment if it means we are not drinking the Kool-Aid.
• 48:00
Speaker 2: I'm just convinced, Danny, that everybody's crazy. That's just where
• 48:04
Speaker 2: I am. I just think everybody's crazy. Let me read
• 48:09
Speaker 2: out this text. You can comment. Why do you have
• 48:13
Speaker 2: to both sides extremism and then run for cover? I'm sorry,
• 48:17
Speaker 2: then run cover for Republicans. It's not far right. The
• 48:20
Speaker 2: entire Republicans are extremes. I don't agree with that.
• 48:24
  Speaker 5: I do not.
• 48:24
Speaker 2: I mean, you mentioned a couple that I'm going to
• 48:27
Speaker 2: have on the show tomorrow. I mean, I don't see J.B.
• 48:29
Speaker 2: Akers as being extreme.
• 48:31
  Speaker 6: I don't think when I was a Republican I was extreme.
• 48:34
  Speaker 2: No, I don't think. And I think there are a
• 48:36
Speaker 2: lot of Republicans that aren't extreme, and I think there
• 48:38
Speaker 2: are a lot of Democrats that aren't extreme. The problem is, though,
• 48:43
Speaker 2: and I have brought this message up on the show before,
• 48:46
Speaker 2: there is a good friend of mine, not in Kanawha County,
• 48:49
Speaker 2: who is running for the legislature right now, in a
• 48:52
Speaker 2: totally different county, who is a Democrat. Moderate, old school,
• 48:56
Speaker 2: John Kennedy, you know, whatever, Democrat, okay? He is, in
• 49:01
Speaker 2: his race, is getting painted as a far left wing,
• 49:06
Speaker 2: vote for this person is a vote for AOC, for
• 49:10
Speaker 2: El Saeed, you know, whatever, fill in name here. Couldn't
• 49:12
Speaker 2: be any further from the truth, but that's the narrative
• 49:14
Speaker 2: being painted because he has a D after his name.
• 49:17
Speaker 6: Yeah, and that's what people do, and it's... not a
• 49:21
Speaker 6: thing where what people ought to do is what Goldwater
• 49:27
Speaker 6: and Kennedy were going to do in 64. They were
• 49:30
Speaker 6: going to travel together and debate each other. You know,
• 49:34
Speaker 6: people ought to stand next to each other and go
• 49:36
Speaker 6: in front of groups instead of spending all that money
• 49:39
Speaker 6: on lies. I hope your friend wins. I don't know
• 49:45
Speaker 6: who he is, but we don't have enough Democrats. We need...
• 49:51
  Speaker 6: I mean, I'm for Takuba.
• 49:54
Speaker 2: But how do we get back to... I mean, look,
• 49:57
Speaker 2: the only way, in my opinion, and I'm not trying
• 49:59
Speaker 2: to tell Mike Pushkin how to run his party or whatever,
• 50:02
Speaker 2: but the only way... that you have a chance in
• 50:05
Speaker 2: West Virginia to win as a Democrat is you have to,
• 50:08
Speaker 2: I think you've got to step up to the plate
• 50:10
Speaker 2: and say, look, I'm my own person. I don't identify
• 50:13
Speaker 2: with the national democratic party. I'm not that kind of Democrat.
• 50:16
Speaker 2: I'm an old school West Virginia Democrat. You might have
• 50:19
Speaker 2: a chance, but until they can do that, I don't
• 50:21
  Speaker 2: see it happening.
• 50:24
Speaker 6: I think Mike's got an impossible job. I think he
• 50:27
Speaker 6: does the best he can. And, um, Remember, he's got
• 50:32
Speaker 6: a constituency he has to deal with. He had competition
• 50:37
Speaker 6: for the job this time. And so I think he
• 50:44
Speaker 6: does the best he can with what he has to
• 50:47
  Speaker 6: deal with.
• 50:47
Speaker 2: Let me give you the final text to get your
• 50:49
Speaker 2: opinion on it. It says, us lowercase independents aren't crazy.
• 50:53
Speaker 2: We're just not organized. Whoever can harness the independent middle
• 50:56
Speaker 2: will win the day. That's what MAGA did, but it
• 50:59
Speaker 2: swamped the GOP. Your thoughts on that, and then we
• 51:01
  Speaker 2: got to go.
• 51:02
Speaker 6: Well, it sounds like Joe Manchin.
• 51:04
  Speaker 5: All right, Danny.
• 51:07
Speaker 6: I'm an independent, too.
• 51:09
Speaker 2: Yeah, as am I. All right, Danny, I'm going to
