- 0:00Speaker 1: Women's basketball against Iowa State tonight eight pm. Mohegan's son
- 0:04Speaker 1: check that out. Husky's coming off of lost Notre Dame,
- 0:07Speaker 1: so they'll be raring to go with Gino Rim and company. Meanwhile,
- 0:12Speaker 1: the men get after it with the Xavier on Wednesday,
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Big East opener UH six point thirty at the
- 0:18Speaker 1: XL Center. Mike Crispino back with Dan Hurley. Quick note
- 0:21Speaker 1: on Yusuf Cingar. You mentioned him in the first segment,
- 0:25Speaker 1: a guy that nobody really knows much about. Obviously you've
- 0:28Speaker 1: been working with him now for a second year. But
- 0:30Speaker 1: he gets thrown in the fire. He had to help
- 0:32Speaker 1: you a little bit and he I thought he did
- 0:34Speaker 1: pretty well for the couple of games he's had a
- 0:36Speaker 1: chance to get in here. And one thing I noticed
- 0:39Speaker 1: when he did come up with a couple of rebounds
- 0:41Speaker 1: at the Garden the other night and kick it around
- 0:43Speaker 1: and keep possession, the crowd really responded to him.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah. Uh, you know, Usef's got a lot of life
- 0:51Speaker 2: and he's got a big personality, and you know he
- 0:54Speaker 2: uh there's uh, you know, there's an opportunity for the
- 0:58Speaker 2: third center. Obviously, the uh injuries happened foul troubles afout,
- 1:03Speaker 2: foul issues happened, and uh you know, he's got a
- 1:06Speaker 2: chance to get out there and get some experience, and
- 1:09Speaker 2: uh you know, we'll just uh you know, we'll keep
- 1:12Speaker 2: trying to develop you, Seph, so that you know, when
- 1:15Speaker 2: he's called upon, he's able to help us more at
- 1:17Speaker 2: both ends.
- 1:18Speaker 1: And Liam McNeely as a freshman debuting at the Garden,
- 1:22Speaker 1: do you remember your first game at the Garden with
- 1:25Speaker 1: Seaton Hall? How did that go? I don't want to
- 1:26Speaker 1: bring up anything that might be a downer, but that's
- 1:29Speaker 1: got to be a tough deal when you go into
- 1:31Speaker 1: the Garden as a freshman guy on the college level.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Well, I just think now with these players, I think
- 1:37Speaker 2: they uh you know, they're more way more worldly. Uh
- 1:41Speaker 2: you know, we never got a chance to play at
- 1:43Speaker 2: the Garden, uh you know, until you until you got
- 1:47Speaker 2: to the Big East Tournament, uh you know, or you
- 1:50Speaker 2: played Saint John's there. These kids are playing, you know,
- 1:53Speaker 2: playing at All Star games and some of the biggest
- 1:56Speaker 2: arenas when they're in the tenth grade. Now, so they're
- 1:58Speaker 2: just these guys are more worldly, you know. And I
- 2:03Speaker 2: I just you know, Liam's approach, I think, you know,
- 2:06Speaker 2: just throughout the year has been incredible. I think it's
- 2:09Speaker 2: it's uh, you know, well beyond his years in terms
- 2:12Speaker 2: of his maturity and and what he's willing to do.
- 2:15Speaker 2: I thought the most impressive. That was the most impressive
- 2:18Speaker 2: game I've seen a freshman play, uh in a long time.
- 2:22Speaker 2: It was by far the best game I've seen a
- 2:24Speaker 2: freshman play for us, especially this early in the season.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I mean, uh, to carry the weight of what he
- 2:30Speaker 2: did and and and and to to do so many
- 2:33Speaker 2: different things, uh to help us win on the glass,
- 2:37Speaker 2: some some clever passing, some big buckets, you know, throughout
- 2:42Speaker 2: the game. And it just was amazing to me. And
- 2:46Speaker 2: you know, he showed that he's willing to do whatever
- 2:48Speaker 2: it takes for us to win. He did it in
- 2:49Speaker 2: the Texas game by sacrificing shots to uh, to rebound
- 2:54Speaker 2: and and to create for others. And then, uh, he's
- 2:57Speaker 2: shown an ability to do what's what's required in this
- 3:00Speaker 2: critical three game stretch when a lot of people, uh,
- 3:04Speaker 2: you know, it kind of buried us and we were
- 3:06Speaker 2: in a you know, a desperate place going into that
- 3:09Speaker 2: Baylor game. No Alex Caravan to done to have played
- 3:14Speaker 2: the way he's done for us in such pressure moments.
- 3:17Speaker 2: He should be at the top of any best Freshman
- 3:19Speaker 2: in the country list by now.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, much needed too. I mean with Alex, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 1: having trouble from outside in the garden, he comes up
- 3:28Speaker 1: with twenty six points. And you know, when you've been
- 3:31Speaker 1: around so many players over the course of your coaching career,
- 3:34Speaker 1: when you see certain guys who just understand have a
- 3:38Speaker 1: court sense, you can tell, can't you. I Mean I
- 3:41Speaker 1: watch him play and I say to myself, man, he
- 3:44Speaker 1: makes the right play most of the time for a
- 3:46Speaker 1: guy who's a young teenager playing against you know, these
- 3:50Speaker 1: these experienced teams from around the country.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Yeah, so he studies film the you're telling you watch
- 3:57Speaker 2: him as a high school player that you know that
- 3:59Speaker 2: there are players that that know how to play, and
- 4:01Speaker 2: there are players that that don't know how to play
- 4:03Speaker 2: and don't have the feel UH and the i Q
- 4:06Speaker 2: and then UH. You know, he builds on that every
- 4:08Speaker 2: day with his work ethic and his preparation and UH,
- 4:12Speaker 2: the seriousness of of his UH, of his approach to
- 4:15Speaker 2: the game and UH and the commitment that the kid
- 4:18Speaker 2: makes to UH to just really caring about how the
- 4:22Speaker 2: season goes for his team, and uh the fact that
- 4:25Speaker 2: uh that is number one priority, even as somebody that
- 4:28Speaker 2: is this highly thought of and has uh you know,
- 4:32Speaker 2: great obvious interest from the NBA. Uh, it never comes
- 4:36Speaker 2: into his mind. Uh. I think what that looks like
- 4:39Speaker 2: for him. I think the only thing that he's concerned
- 4:41Speaker 2: about is, uh how it can help us win, being
- 4:45Speaker 2: a great competitor and and just showing up the right
- 4:49Speaker 2: way for a game that he loves. And uh, he's
- 4:53Speaker 2: just uh you know, a joy, a joy in a
- 4:56Speaker 2: game where there's less people like Liam mcneelye every year
- 5:00Speaker 2: coming into college basketball NBA basketball. We're very fortunate.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:05Speaker 1: The thing the term that comes to my mind is
- 5:07Speaker 1: is unflappable. For a guy of his age and experience
- 5:10Speaker 1: on the college level, very little seems to bother him.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I mean, he had that rough game at Maui where
- 5:15Speaker 1: he couldn't make a field goal. He's bounced back with three,
- 5:18Speaker 1: you know, excellent games in a row. I mean, can
- 5:21Speaker 1: you teach that a guy to be unflappable and not
- 5:24Speaker 1: be bothered by ups and downs in a in a
- 5:27Speaker 1: college season.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I don't know if if if
- 5:31Speaker 2: you can, I think Uh, you know, you could just
- 5:34Speaker 2: get like I said, people that are very serious and
- 5:37Speaker 2: very competitive and want to win, and then I think,
- 5:40Speaker 2: you you you you insulate them in an environment where
- 5:45Speaker 2: they know that they've put in great preparation and uh,
- 5:49Speaker 2: you know, and then I think that's what allows individuals
- 5:52Speaker 2: like like like Liam to you know, whether the storms
- 5:55Speaker 2: during the course of a year, there's going to be
- 5:57Speaker 2: some some off nights, there's going to be some bad stretches.
- 6:01Speaker 2: But when you have the right makeup and you have
- 6:03Speaker 2: the right approach, you can get back down to it.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yeah, he had made a bunch of free throws in
- 6:10Speaker 1: a row in that game against Gonzaga and going stretching
- 6:14Speaker 1: back to the Texas game, the Baylor game, and then
- 6:16Speaker 1: he missed a couple, but when you needed him down
- 6:19Speaker 1: the stretch, he made free throws he needed to make.
- 6:21Speaker 1: That's another quality that is that's going to serve him
- 6:25Speaker 1: well going through the season.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, at the end of the game in
- 6:30Speaker 2: close games, who who do you want to get the
- 6:33Speaker 2: ball to that you know, Tristan Newton was was was
- 6:37Speaker 2: that guy for US. Cam Spencer has been that guy
- 6:40Speaker 2: for US. Hassan has been a clutch free free throw shooter. Uh,
- 6:45Speaker 2: you know for us, you know, you need those guys
- 6:49Speaker 2: that that you want to imbound the ball to against pressure,
- 6:54Speaker 2: that you believe are going to step to the line
- 6:56Speaker 2: and keep it a multi possession game or take game.
- 7:01Speaker 2: You know, to receive the ball up one with twenty
- 7:04Speaker 2: seconds to go in a one on one situation. Yeah,
- 7:08Speaker 2: it takes a certain type of individual.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yeah, he's certainly one of those guys. All Right, Dan
- 7:13Speaker 1: Hurley's with us. The Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show returns
- 7:16Speaker 1: in a moment. We'll talk about some of these sophomores
- 7:19Speaker 1: who are starting to step up for the Huskies as well.
- 7:22Speaker 1: We're here on lear Field. Stay with us.
