- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist and also
- 0:09happened to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to.
- 0:15Teach distinctions. Possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking and just bring some joy.
- 0:20Into the world, so welcome to the.
- 0:22Coop and let's start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey, everybody, good morning. So we're talking about
- 0:30efficiencies and I don't mean like an efficiency washing
- 0:34machine. I'm talking about our own
- 0:37personal efficiencies and doing an audit on our own personal
- 0:42efficiencies. So I'm going to give you an
- 0:45example because I think it's super important to look at how
- 0:50we do the things we do. Not just the things we do, but
- 0:53how we do the things we do. Because if you're taking more
- 0:58steps than you need to, then the old phrase of you're bringing
- 1:01the piano to the stool instead of the stool to the piano really
- 1:05does play in. So let's talk about simple
- 1:08things. I'm in the kitchen.
- 1:11Let's use this as an example. I'm in the kitchen.
- 1:13I am making lunch for my son to take to work and the pantry is
- 1:19behind the kitchen. So it's like a walkthrough.
- 1:22It's like a circle. So I've got like a a giant donut
- 1:25that I can walk through constantly.
- 1:27It's open on both ends. So I realized the other day when
- 1:31I started, he started a new role and I've been having to make him
- 1:36lunch when I take him down and drop him off.
- 1:38So I'm walking through the pantry and I realize while I'm
- 1:42getting a ton of steps, which I'm grateful for because of my
- 1:45step obsession, I realized I'm not going through this
- 1:49efficiently. I, I was like, wait a minute,
- 1:52what am I doing? Why am I walking through here so
- 1:54many times? It's like every time I went
- 1:56through the pantry, I got the one thing I needed instead of
- 1:59stopping and pausing and thinking about all the things I
- 2:03needed. So this is indicative of what
- 2:06happens when you are not in the moment.
- 2:09OK, It's like you're, you're not thinking about what you're doing
- 2:13right now. You're on autopilot.
- 2:14So to say I've I've got to make a lunch.
- 2:17So I'm not thinking it all the way through.
- 2:20Like, OK, I've got to make him a lunch.
- 2:22I need a sandwich. All right, let me go in there
- 2:23and get rolls. Let me get the, the snacks to go
- 2:26along with it. Let me get some of his, you
- 2:28know, crunchy stuff. Let me get him a cookie.
- 2:31All of these things. And I could have carried them
- 2:32all at at once, but I didn't. So I kept having to walk back
- 2:36there and walk back there and walk back there.
- 2:38And it just takes more time. Now, it may seem silly because
- 2:42we're not talking about a ton of time.
- 2:44We're talking just about, you know, nanoseconds.
- 2:46But guess what? They all add up.
- 2:48And that's the issue. That's where it comes into play.
- 2:51Now, while this may seem silly because hey, you know what?
- 2:55It's just a, a story about making lunches.
- 2:58This isn't just about the lunch. This is about everything we do.
- 3:01And it shows up repetitively because our brains are being
- 3:06pulled, our thoughts are being pulled, our emotions are being
- 3:08pulled in different directions. So we're constantly working
- 3:12towards something else, maybe internally, maybe externally.
- 3:17How many times have you started doing one thing and before you
- 3:20know it, you're not even doing that thing anymore.
- 3:22You're doing a completely different task.
- 3:25And this happens a lot on electronics.
- 3:27So if you're on your laptop and you're working on something and
- 3:31then all of a sudden you see a tab or something full like
- 3:34catches your eye, you're over there and you're doing something
- 3:38else that you know is on your list of things to do.
- 3:41But you it pulls you away from what you were just doing.
- 3:44And this happens so much to us that before you know it, you're
- 3:48like, wait, I didn't even get that done.
- 3:50And I mean, it happens to me doing the podcast.
- 3:54I will start off to do something and you know what?
- 3:57All of a sudden I'm in a different direction and it it is
- 4:01absolutely so infuriating to me that our brains can't just stay
- 4:06on that one task. Especially for all the creatives
- 4:09out there like myself. It is very hard because you're
- 4:13always thinking and expanding and moving in a specific
- 4:17direction. So it seems like it makes sense
- 4:19and then boom, it does not make sense.
- 4:23So what's the big point of this? The big point of this is we can
- 4:27control it, but we have to work at it and we have to set these
- 4:30little time block of intentions, but not a time block.
- 4:34Like, OK, from here to here I'm going to be doing this because
- 4:37then we know that's not going to work.
- 4:40We know if we just block out time, most of us can't follow
- 4:43time blocks. We say we can, we'll block it
- 4:46off. But we are, if we're really
- 4:48honest with ourselves, and I know because of of how my brain
- 4:50works and how many clients I coach that have this problem,
- 4:53that time block sounds like an excellent idea, but there will
- 4:57be other things that will seep into it.
- 5:00So it's more about the task and saying, OK, I'm going to put
- 5:05this task on a post it note and I'm going to put it right where
- 5:08I am, or I'm going to make my list and I'm going to make sure
- 5:12that I grab something off of that list and put it right where
- 5:17I can see it right. So I love post it notes for this
- 5:20very reason. And I will have a big brain dump
- 5:22list, but then I will write a singular item, especially if
- 5:25it's one that I know is slippery and gets away for me, onto a
- 5:28post it note. And then I will put that where I
- 5:30can see it until it's done. But this is a way to help you be
- 5:34more efficient long term. You won't have to use the post
- 5:38it note so much, but I'm telling you it's a way to be more
- 5:41efficient. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:43you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:45Bye.
