- 0:00Hey there and welcome back. I'm Dr. Hartung and
- 0:02you're listening to the Family Chiropractic Center
- 0:04podcast. Today we're talking about something
- 0:07that affects just about every single person I
- 0:10see in my office. And honestly, it's something
- 0:12most people don't even connect the dots on. We're
- 0:15talking about stress and the very real, very
- 0:18physical pain it can cause in your body. Now,
- 0:21I know what you might be thinking. Stress is
- 0:23a mental thing, right? It's in your head. But
- 0:25here's the thing. Your brain and your body are
- 0:28not separate systems. They are constantly talking
- 0:32to each other. And when your mind is under pressure,
- 0:34your body pays the price. So let me break this
- 0:37down for you. When you're stressed, your nervous
- 0:39system kicks into what we call a fight -or -flight
- 0:42response. Your body thinks there's a threat,
- 0:45and so it does what it's designed to do. It tenses
- 0:48up. Your muscles tighten. Your shoulders creep
- 0:51up toward your ears. Your jaw clenches. Your
- 0:54lower back locks down. Now, if that stress response
- 0:57lasts for just a few minutes, no big deal. But
- 1:00most of us, we're walking around in that state
- 1:02all day long, day after day, week after week,
- 1:06and that constant muscle tension, it starts to
- 1:09pull on your joints. It compresses your spine.
- 1:12It creates inflammation. And eventually, it turns
- 1:16into real physical pain. Here's what's interesting,
- 1:19and I see this all the time in my patients. Someone
- 1:22will come in with neck pain, headaches and they'll
- 1:25say, I have no idea where this came from. I didn't
- 1:28lift anything heavy. I didn't have an accident.
- 1:32And when we start talking, it turns out they've
- 1:35been going through something really stressful
- 1:37at work or with family or financially. And there
- 1:40it is. The stress was literally living in their
- 1:43body. The upper back and neck are huge areas
- 1:47where people hold tension. The lower back is
- 1:50another one, even your hips. Stress changes the
- 1:53way you breathe, the way you sit, the way you
- 1:55carry yourself, and all of that adds up over
- 1:58time. So what can you actually do about it? A
- 2:01few simple things. First, pay attention to your
- 2:04body during the day. Notice when you're clenching
- 2:06your teeth or hunching your shoulders. Just becoming
- 2:09aware of it helps you reset. Second, breathing
- 2:12matters more than people realize. Slow, deep
- 2:16breaths actually signal your nervous system to
- 2:19calm down. Even just a minute or two of slow
- 2:22breathing can start to shift things. Third, gentle
- 2:26movement is huge. Whether it's a short walk,
- 2:29some light stretching, or even just standing
- 2:31up and rolling your shoulders back, movement
- 2:34helps release that built -up tension before it
- 2:37turns into pain. Now here's where chiropractic
- 2:40care fits in. When your spine is under that kind
- 2:44of chronic stress and tension, the joints can
- 2:46start to move improperly. We call those restrictions
- 2:49subluxations. And when those are present, your
- 2:52nervous system doesn't function the way it should.
- 2:55Chiropractic adjustments help restore proper
- 2:57movement to those joints, which takes pressure
- 2:59off the nervous system, reduces muscle tension,
- 3:02and honestly, a lot of patients tell me they
- 3:05just feel calmer after an adjustment. That's
- 3:08not a coincidence. We're directly influencing
- 3:11the nervous system. If you've been dealing with
- 3:13headaches, neck pain, tight shoulders, or low
- 3:16back discomfort, and you've been under a lot
- 3:19of stress lately, I really encourage you to come
- 3:21in and get evaluated. It doesn't have to be complicated.
