- 0:01Speaker 1: Good More, some of the content of Patriots Unfiltered may
- 0:05Speaker 1: not be suitable for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Welcome to Patriot's Unfiltered. Brett and Austen. I think Brady's
- 0:18Speaker 1: letter that he wrote when he left the Patriots thinking
- 0:20Speaker 1: the fans and I'll start this over for Brett and Austin.
- 0:25Speaker 1: You cannot be the head coach in the NFL and
- 0:27Speaker 1: wear a catt. You have to put at least a
- 0:30Speaker 1: curve to it. You're not nineteen on a skateboard. Curve
- 0:34Speaker 1: your brim or take the cap off. I was on
- 0:36Speaker 1: part of this night printed in case we were gonna
- 0:40Speaker 1: kills more trees than anybody I've ever seen. Will you
- 0:42Speaker 1: file that the animals need trees? Eric? My second question
- 0:46Speaker 1: is whether you guys think whether you guys think I'll
- 0:51Speaker 1: start You had to shovel all of that. Yeah, I
- 0:53Speaker 1: can't get a plow. They're all booked. Guys are driving
- 0:56Speaker 1: by in their pickups and I tried to like flag
- 0:59Speaker 1: them down. They just kept going. Like fm F Tony Mazzarotti,
- 1:03Speaker 1: you have to like tweet out every like moment that
- 1:06Speaker 1: we're out there snow blowing. It's embarrassing. Hold on, hold on,
- 1:15Speaker 1: Mac Jones, he is not a Pro Bowlers. This is
- 1:19Speaker 1: Patriots Unfiltered, fueled by Duncan Well. Since our last show
- 1:26Speaker 1: on Tuesday, there's been yet another major NFL story and
- 1:30Speaker 1: guess what. Patriots are directly connected to it as always
- 1:35Speaker 1: in a couple of ways. Um, and today is a
- 1:38Speaker 1: very special anniversary in Patriot's history. We'll get to that
- 1:42Speaker 1: and I'm sure other topics on over the next two hours.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I'm Eric Scalvino, Paul Perillo might do so, are here
- 1:49Speaker 1: with me, Matt Morrell producing behind the glasses usual, Fred
- 1:51Speaker 1: kersh not here somewhere, tropical, refreshing, recalibrating somewhere. The opening
- 1:58Speaker 1: was a tour to Fred, right, so that was his
- 2:01Speaker 1: contribution for the everybody apparently damn skipping through the list, right,
- 2:08Speaker 1: but it's um, it's the Thursday before the Pro Bowl.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Mac Jones involved, He's inolved. He wrote a little something
- 2:16Speaker 1: about the Skills Challenge. Yeah, skills tonight next weekend is
- 2:21Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. But we had some major news, uh,
- 2:24Speaker 1: since the last shows. I started off with former Patriots
- 2:28Speaker 1: assistant and former Dolphins coach Brian Flores filing suit with
- 2:33Speaker 1: the NFL over claims of discriminatory hiring practices throughout the league,
- 2:38Speaker 1: and he cited specific teams, specific examples, and he used
- 2:41Speaker 1: specific text messages from the head coach here ye and
- 2:47Speaker 1: Bill Belichick and how he discovered that he wasn't getting
- 2:52Speaker 1: the Giants job for which he hadn't yet interviewed, but
- 2:54Speaker 1: was about to interview ya for and they ended up
- 2:57Speaker 1: giving it to another Brian who used to coach here,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and so maybe there were confusion. So, um, you know,
- 3:06Speaker 1: we Paul, you and I we we've talked before about
- 3:09Speaker 1: how like, you know, we used to see Flow a
- 3:11Speaker 1: lot here in the building and got to know him
- 3:12Speaker 1: a little bit, you know, in passing as much as
- 3:14Speaker 1: you can get to as much as you can get
- 3:16Speaker 1: to know these guys because they spend so much time
- 3:18Speaker 1: working around here. But I always had a good, you know,
- 3:22Speaker 1: rapport with him whenever we had a chance to talk
- 3:24Speaker 1: with with Flow. I don't know if you ever got
- 3:26Speaker 1: to he was already gone by the time you got here,
- 3:28Speaker 1: right in twenty nineteen. But um, what do we what
- 3:30Speaker 1: do we make of of of this? I mean, the
- 3:33Speaker 1: league came out almost immediately with a yeah, they stepped
- 3:37Speaker 1: in it against as they are want to do with
- 3:40Speaker 1: the statement saying like there's no merit to any of this,
- 3:42Speaker 1: Like okay, well you're just gonna spend five minutes looking
- 3:45Speaker 1: at this and say there's no merit to it. I mean,
- 3:47Speaker 1: he was pretty detailed floors and some of the examples
- 3:49Speaker 1: that he gave. They did correct it because there's two
- 3:52Speaker 1: different things. God, there's a discrimination suit, uh, you know
- 3:56Speaker 1: about the hiring practices, and that's what the NFL responded
- 4:01Speaker 1: to because they had very quickly. Denver had very detailed
- 4:06Speaker 1: defense of because it was Denver the Giants in Miami,
- 4:10Speaker 1: the three teams and Denver and the Giants, it was
- 4:14Speaker 1: about the discriminatory hiring practices in Denver immediately had a
- 4:18Speaker 1: lot of detail describing that it wasn't a sham of
- 4:22Speaker 1: an interview. But that's a separate issue, and you could,
- 4:26Speaker 1: certainly you could argue in terms of you know, humanity,
- 4:33Speaker 1: that's far more important. You know, if if you're dealing
- 4:36Speaker 1: with the fact that there's one black head coach in
- 4:38Speaker 1: the National Football League and you know you have a
- 4:40Speaker 1: seventy percent workforce, is minorities that you could argue is
- 4:46Speaker 1: a more important issue. But in terms of football and
- 4:50Speaker 1: what is more important for the NFL. The other part
- 4:53Speaker 1: of the suit to me blows it away. And the
- 4:56Speaker 1: NFL is not hiding from that at all. In terms
- 5:00Speaker 1: of the without merit, they are investigating it. And that's
- 5:03Speaker 1: whether or not Stephen Ross through games, right because I
- 5:05Speaker 1: think it's what what what Brian Flores is alleging is
- 5:09Speaker 1: that the Miami Dolphins through football games. He offered one
- 5:14Speaker 1: hundred thousand dollars incentive bonus for every game that the
- 5:17Speaker 1: Dolphins lost. And if that's true, first of all, it's
- 5:22Speaker 1: ridiculously damaging to the NFL. Second of all, I think
- 5:26Speaker 1: you've seen the last of Stephen Ross as an owner
- 5:28Speaker 1: in the NFL. And if they can prove that he's
- 5:30Speaker 1: got he gots to go. And this was alleged to
- 5:33Speaker 1: have happened in Flores' first year there, twenty nineteen, which
- 5:37Speaker 1: was the year before Joe Burrow and um uh blanking
- 5:45Speaker 1: ta and and the kids from the charges escaping me
- 5:48Speaker 1: right now, justin thank you. Going into the two, there
- 5:51Speaker 1: were a lot of quarterbacks. Ta was available. Burrow wasn't
- 5:54Speaker 1: even on the radar at the time. Going into that season,
- 5:58Speaker 1: Tua was the guy. The object of everybody desired. Then
- 6:00Speaker 1: two we got hurt. And while two we got hurt
- 6:03Speaker 1: in that season, Burrow was ripping it up and Burrow,
- 6:07Speaker 1: you know, sort of leapfrog to the front of the
- 6:10Speaker 1: line as the target. So that's the whole idea was.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And again, tanking and trying to position yourself for draft
- 6:19Speaker 1: picks is nothing new in any sport, and I don't
- 6:21Speaker 1: think anybody really has a huge problem with it. This
- 6:24Speaker 1: is different than tanking. This is trying to lose. This
- 6:27Speaker 1: is trying to throw the game right. Like I want you, Mike,
- 6:31Speaker 1: you're my quarterback, I'm your coach. I'm telling you throw
- 6:34Speaker 1: an interception here. I don't want you to succeed. I
- 6:37Speaker 1: want you to lose. Like there's a difference between putting
- 6:41Speaker 1: out young, inexperienced players and telling them go out there
- 6:45Speaker 1: and play hard, earn yourself an NFL career. Yeah, you're
- 6:48Speaker 1: probably gonna be overmatched. As the general manager, I know
- 6:51Speaker 1: what's going to happen. We're probably gonna lose more often
- 6:53Speaker 1: than not because we're not experience like the Jets this year. Now,
- 6:57Speaker 1: to me, this calls into question with some of these teams, Well, well,
- 7:00Speaker 1: you're tanking or were you openly trying to lose? Were
- 7:03Speaker 1: you throwing the game? Yeah? And Stephen Ross has all
- 7:07Speaker 1: these connections to gambling and investing with DraftKings and whatnot,
- 7:12Speaker 1: and this is this is not this is not good. Yeah,
- 7:16Speaker 1: not good, Bob. A couple of a couple of thoughts.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I mean, and I love how you kind of laid
- 7:20Speaker 1: it out, because I just wonder how it's all going
- 7:22Speaker 1: to get parsed out as you get into like the
- 7:24Speaker 1: legal rigamarole of all this, and you know, can you know,
- 7:27Speaker 1: does that one part of it blow up? I mean,
- 7:29Speaker 1: I don't. I think everybody acknowledges that the Rooney rule
- 7:32Speaker 1: is kind of treated mostly as a joke, and and
- 7:34Speaker 1: I think that's you know what set seemed to set
- 7:36Speaker 1: Floras off. And well, and it has been ever since
- 7:39Speaker 1: it was instituted, right, and oh we've and that's what
- 7:42Speaker 1: the insinuation was that everybody kind of knows what they're doing,
- 7:44Speaker 1: you know, but we got to bring in a minority.
- 7:46Speaker 1: So you know, in that regard, it seems like, you know, unfortunately,
- 7:50Speaker 1: the Bill Belichick snaffoo with the Bryans is kind of
- 7:52Speaker 1: what set it all off. And that's what he decided
- 7:55Speaker 1: to kind of go, you know, a hand, but I mean,
- 7:58Speaker 1: I think you'd have to say too just you know,
- 8:00Speaker 1: credit to Brian Flora's in terms of making this stand,
- 8:02Speaker 1: because I think everybody agreed that, like, you know, we
- 8:05Speaker 1: were all wondering why you got fired from Miami. It
- 8:07Speaker 1: seemed it seemed wrong. And now at least you have
- 8:09Speaker 1: some more context of some of the things that have
- 8:11Speaker 1: been going on in Miami, some of the you know,
- 8:13Speaker 1: weird moves that they've made, you know, the Vanoy thing.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I mean not to say that that's connected to this,
- 8:17Speaker 1: but I just feel like we had a lot of
- 8:19Speaker 1: conversation this year about something's going on in Miami that
- 8:22Speaker 1: we don't quite know. It just doesn't seem quite right there.
- 8:25Speaker 1: And then Flora's getting fired. Everyone was like, my god,
- 8:28Speaker 1: he should have his pick of the pick of jobs
- 8:30Speaker 1: coming out of it. So, you know, for a coach
- 8:32Speaker 1: to be at that point where he certainly is well
- 8:35Speaker 1: respected around the league and would have had certainly has
- 8:38Speaker 1: interest and I mean he's in the middle of job interviews,
- 8:41Speaker 1: so you know, for him to you know, make this
- 8:42Speaker 1: move now, I think it says a lot about him.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And you know what everybody has said about him and now,
- 8:47Speaker 1: but I you know, I can't help but think certainly
- 8:50Speaker 1: the Rooney rule and that whole operation, you know, is
- 8:53Speaker 1: due for a makeover or you know, blow it up
- 8:56Speaker 1: and do something else. But I think Paul is right.
- 8:58Speaker 1: The biggest part of it is that Stephen Rossing and
- 9:01Speaker 1: the integrity of the game and those things, and you
- 9:04Speaker 1: know that how does that all play out? When I
- 9:06Speaker 1: want to be sent when I say that, because I
- 9:08Speaker 1: don't want to brush under the rug the fact that
- 9:11Speaker 1: there's one black head coach in the National Football League,
- 9:13Speaker 1: I don't, you know, I don't want to just make
- 9:15Speaker 1: light of that. But in terms of of long Leaf,
- 9:18Speaker 1: I mean this has I mean, there haven't been enough
- 9:21Speaker 1: minorities in charge of teams in all sports, you know, forever,
- 9:26Speaker 1: and it's an ongoing problem. It's it's probably a problem
- 9:30Speaker 1: that society is going to constantly be working to fix, right.
- 9:34Speaker 1: But to have a league that is potentially throwing games,
- 9:41Speaker 1: I think that's that's the number one cardinal sin of
- 9:45Speaker 1: all athletics. When you watch it, you know, when you
- 9:47Speaker 1: watch competition, you have to it has to be of
- 9:50Speaker 1: the belief that it's gonna happen up and you know,
- 9:53Speaker 1: I think if just think about all the different ramifications
- 9:57Speaker 1: that could happen, Mike, if you you know, one day,
- 10:02Speaker 1: I don't know, in twenty nineteen, did you bet on
- 10:05Speaker 1: you know, on the Dolphins? Are you now going and
- 10:09Speaker 1: putting yourself part of our class action suits and likes?
- 10:13Speaker 1: I lost three thousand dollars on the Dolphins that year. Yeah,
- 10:16Speaker 1: well they were trying to lose. Yeah, right, I want
- 10:20Speaker 1: my money back. And you know, you know, assuming you
- 10:22Speaker 1: were getting you know, legal scamble, right, not like you
- 10:25Speaker 1: can't go to Joey the nose. Yeah, good luck with that.
- 10:27Speaker 1: And I think just to you know, to compliment that
- 10:30Speaker 1: I have to pay me the same thing you can
- 10:31Speaker 1: have with minority coaches who went through the process and
- 10:34Speaker 1: felt like it was a sham. And yeah, you know,
- 10:36Speaker 1: this could open the door. Just like that could open
- 10:37Speaker 1: the door to that side of the lawsuit, the other
- 10:40Speaker 1: side of it could be open. And I think you're
- 10:41Speaker 1: hearing some of the coaches now mentioned that as well,
- 10:43Speaker 1: that you know they had similar experiences. Is this like
- 10:46Speaker 1: this thing's already been decided? Um, you know, unfortunately, I
- 10:49Speaker 1: think just Bill's mistake just gave you kind of a
- 10:52Speaker 1: clear picture, and we should probably explain that like there
- 10:56Speaker 1: was and there's a couple of schools with thought, But
- 10:58Speaker 1: basically there's a text exchange betwe Queen Flores and Belichick
- 11:02Speaker 1: where Belichick is basically telling Flora's that, uh, you know,
- 11:06Speaker 1: he thinks he's got he's got it, he's hearing got
- 11:09Speaker 1: the giants, hearing from Buffalo and people, you got it.
- 11:13Speaker 1: It's you, it's yours, you know, and Flora's response by saying, yeah,
- 11:16Speaker 1: I really think I have a good shot. I'm interviewing,
- 11:19Speaker 1: you know, whenever tomorrow he had an interviewed yet. And
- 11:22Speaker 1: then I think at that point they both kind of realized,
- 11:25Speaker 1: I wonder if he knows that he's talking to Brian Flora,
- 11:27Speaker 1: well maybe the Buffalo should have tipped him off, because
- 11:29Speaker 1: like why would Buffalo? Right, Yeah, but I think he
- 11:32Speaker 1: might have Yeah, And then Belichick said that he miss
- 11:34Speaker 1: ran a previous text and left up. Um so now
- 11:39Speaker 1: the schools of thought are that he was he thought
- 11:41Speaker 1: he was texting Dable but was texting Floors instead, which
- 11:44Speaker 1: everybody has done a million times. Um, it's not really
- 11:47Speaker 1: that that big a deal, and it's not all that
- 11:49Speaker 1: uncommon in this case. It just kind of illustrated the
- 11:52Speaker 1: fact that Flora has never really had a chance to
- 11:54Speaker 1: get the job before he interviewed. The other school of
- 11:58Speaker 1: thought is that he knew he was, um, you know,
- 12:02Speaker 1: he he maybe like, I'm a little fixated on the
- 12:06Speaker 1: I misread the text thing, and I'm wondering if maybe
- 12:10Speaker 1: you know, the information that he received from the Giants
- 12:13Speaker 1: or whoever said that, yeah, Brian's got the job, and
- 12:16Speaker 1: as he thought Flores. No, I don't know where Buffalo
- 12:20Speaker 1: factors into that. That's why to me, I'm more likely
- 12:22Speaker 1: to think that he thought he was texting Dable because
- 12:25Speaker 1: Buffalo and the Giants. But maybe, you know, maybe Buffalo
- 12:29Speaker 1: people said, yeah, Dabele isn't getting it, Flores is getting it. Yeah,
- 12:32Speaker 1: do you know what I mean? So and and and
- 12:35Speaker 1: that's you know, I just wonder about that part. But
- 12:38Speaker 1: I don't I'll stayed up front. I don't buy any
- 12:42Speaker 1: of these conspiracy theories that Belichick did this on purpose
- 12:44Speaker 1: and just trying to take down the Giants or leave whatever.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I just like, can we stop with that? I mean,
- 12:49Speaker 1: I think I think he either texted he either texted
- 12:54Speaker 1: Flores thinking it was Dabele, or he thought it was
- 12:58Speaker 1: getting the job right. Yeah, it's one of those two
- 13:01Speaker 1: things right in my in my mind. Yeah, I'm not
- 13:04Speaker 1: do I know for sure? No, but those that's my opinion, right,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and it's a lot. Excuse me, it's a logical conclusion.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Either of those are a logical, uh conclusion to make.
- 13:15Speaker 1: It's also worth noting a former NFL coach, Hugh Jackson
- 13:19Speaker 1: apparently is jumping in on the Floor's suit saying that Cleveland,
- 13:22Speaker 1: when he was there, also was doing similar things with
- 13:26Speaker 1: you know, asking him to lose games on purpose in
- 13:31Speaker 1: exchange for payments, and that he refused. Now his explanation
- 13:36Speaker 1: seemed kind of odd to me, but who knows, I'm
- 13:39Speaker 1: trying to as I'm reading this, I don't know if
- 13:41Speaker 1: you guys had a similar thought too. But and as
- 13:46Speaker 1: we say, did we We knew Floors a little bit
- 13:48Speaker 1: when when he was here, and always liked him. If
- 13:51Speaker 1: I were in his position, if I were my first
- 13:55Speaker 1: year as a head coach in the NFL. I'm with
- 13:58Speaker 1: this new team. It's a dream come true. I have
- 14:00Speaker 1: this gig. And then the owner, very influential person comes
- 14:05Speaker 1: down and says, this is what you're gonna do, and
- 14:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna pay you this much every time you do it.
- 14:12Speaker 1: What would I have done if I were him? Would
- 14:16Speaker 1: I have? Would I have? Like, well, obviously, like Floris said, no,
- 14:19Speaker 1: he was trying to win games. He was doing the
- 14:21Speaker 1: right thing. That's that's great, But like what it would
- 14:24Speaker 1: it have stopped there? Would I have? Would I have
- 14:26Speaker 1: said no, I'm not doing it, and and be I'm
- 14:30Speaker 1: not coaching for you anymore? How dare you? Would I
- 14:32Speaker 1: have shut up, taken it because I have the dream
- 14:36Speaker 1: job of my life and covered it up? Would I
- 14:39Speaker 1: have continued to do that? What I mean? I don't know.
- 14:42Speaker 1: I don't know what the answer to that is. And
- 14:43Speaker 1: I think everybody has to ask themselves that question too,
- 14:47Speaker 1: because it seems like maybe, and maybe you're right. Maybe
- 14:50Speaker 1: these text messages from Bill were the tipping point where
- 14:52Speaker 1: he said, look, I'm sick of this, I can't take anymore.
- 14:55Speaker 1: I gotta do something. And that was maybe the straw
- 14:58Speaker 1: that broke the camel's back. I mean, it's just another
- 15:00Speaker 1: piece of it too. Is is like maybe you think, well,
- 15:03Speaker 1: if I tank and I get a better draft pick,
- 15:04Speaker 1: I'm going to get a better player. I'm going to
- 15:07Speaker 1: you know, it'd be better for me maybe long term.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I mean, these are all you know, considerations that you
- 15:11Speaker 1: can make, um, you know, quick aside. I mean, I
- 15:13Speaker 1: just feel like a part of this like go towards
- 15:16Speaker 1: maybe the draft doesn't need to be so cut and
- 15:18Speaker 1: dry of the worst team gets the first pick. Maybe
- 15:20Speaker 1: there's some kind of all Fred on me hears of
- 15:22Speaker 1: of of of lottery, you know, where you have the
- 15:24Speaker 1: top ten teams are all in the you know for
- 15:26Speaker 1: I mean, that's just it just seems like now with
- 15:28Speaker 1: this it's coming out, maybe other teams are doing this
- 15:31Speaker 1: and if it's you know, that easy where you know,
- 15:34Speaker 1: if you're if you ever the lesson you're getting the
- 15:36Speaker 1: first pick. I don't know. The only thing is that
- 15:38Speaker 1: there's just as much tanking going on in the NBA
- 15:40Speaker 1: as any other sports. So I just don't think Fred
- 15:43Speaker 1: has had that long standing belief that this should be
- 15:45Speaker 1: some kind of thing like that. Um. But that's a
- 15:49Speaker 1: separate issue and maybe worth discussing on another show about
- 15:56Speaker 1: the draft and just the whole process. Um. But to
- 15:58Speaker 1: the other point about you know, and this is hard
- 16:02Speaker 1: to know because you don't know what exactly you know. Okay,
- 16:06Speaker 1: So Stephen Ross says, I need you to lose. I
- 16:10Speaker 1: need you to do everything you can to lose those
- 16:12Speaker 1: which you know. In other words, we're taking it beyond tanking,
- 16:15Speaker 1: like because I think you can sit the guy down,
- 16:17Speaker 1: which is what I think happened with Cleveland by the way, Um,
- 16:21Speaker 1: I think you sit the guy down and you say, listen,
- 16:23Speaker 1: we're gonna we're gonna strip this down. We're gonna we're
- 16:26Speaker 1: gonna deal off some assets and we're gonna take some lumps.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Don't worry about it. Your job is gonna be safe.
- 16:32Speaker 1: We're gonna be patient with you, and we're gonna we're
- 16:34Speaker 1: gonna suffer through that. We know we're not going to
- 16:36Speaker 1: be a very good team in twenty nine. We're not
- 16:38Speaker 1: going to take it out on you. But you're not
- 16:39Speaker 1: gonna get You're not going anywhere. We believe in you.
- 16:42Speaker 1: You're part of the future. That's tanking to me, Yeah,
- 16:46Speaker 1: but now you're taking taking to a different level by saying, listen, Brian,
- 16:51Speaker 1: I know that what we have set up here is
- 16:53Speaker 1: probably like a four and twelve team that ain't good enough.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I need you to go two and fourteen. We gotta
- 16:58Speaker 1: get to Hyeah. Well, we got to get Joe Burrow. Okay,
- 17:02Speaker 1: which is different. I'm throwing games right, So now does
- 17:07Speaker 1: does Flores step back and say, mister Ross, I can't
- 17:11Speaker 1: do that, which apparently he did, and then Ross accepts
- 17:15Speaker 1: it said okay, So now if I'm Brian Floors, I'm like, okay,
- 17:19Speaker 1: you know, we're just you know, we're just gonna tank.
- 17:21Speaker 1: So he's okay or was it an ongoing problem like
- 17:26Speaker 1: he continued to say, you gotta do this, you gotta
- 17:29Speaker 1: do this, you gotta do this, and he just said no,
- 17:31Speaker 1: I'm not doing all those things. Then finally he gets fired,
- 17:34Speaker 1: and now I'm gonna blow the whistle on it, because
- 17:36Speaker 1: I kind of wonder why he didn't blow the whistle
- 17:38Speaker 1: earlier than he did, but especially if he got fired
- 17:41Speaker 1: for it, like that might be a good time just
- 17:42Speaker 1: to do it. Right. No, well, well obviously he got
- 17:45Speaker 1: he got fired. I think he got fired for insubordination.
- 17:48Speaker 1: And that sounds like Flores deserved to be fired. I'm
- 17:51Speaker 1: not saying that, right, but in Ross's mind, he was insubordinate.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I told him to do a couple of things right
- 17:57Speaker 1: that he refused to do. Yeah, you know, like you know,
- 18:01Speaker 1: and there's the other part with what we haven't even
- 18:03Speaker 1: touched on with the Tampa n potentially with Tom Braid. Yeah,
- 18:07Speaker 1: you know, having prominent quarter going to a meeting quote
- 18:10Speaker 1: un quote, you know you were here, Tom. I mean
- 18:14Speaker 1: this is maybe a nuts maybe a nuts and bolts question.
- 18:17Speaker 1: But what would you do as a head coach if
- 18:19Speaker 1: you decided you wanted to lose a game? Like, how
- 18:21Speaker 1: would you how would you do it? What would be
- 18:22Speaker 1: the you know, the method because it's well, i'd say
- 18:25Speaker 1: of your quarterback. No, but I think Paul points. I
- 18:27Speaker 1: think Paul kind of brought it up where it's like, Okay,
- 18:29Speaker 1: you tell your starter you're gonna you're gonna sit this
- 18:31Speaker 1: one out, or you're gonna sit out after the first quarter. Like,
- 18:33Speaker 1: all right, that's enough. You said, that's the personnel. But
- 18:36Speaker 1: this is to me different, Like this is personnel decisions
- 18:39Speaker 1: can help you lose games. Yeah, I think Ross is
- 18:42Speaker 1: openly telling him do things that will make us lose.
- 18:46Speaker 1: What do you think what's the best way to play
- 18:48Speaker 1: defense in this game? You know, Tampa two and don't
- 18:51Speaker 1: do it. Let's go eleven on the opposite Let's go
- 18:54Speaker 1: eleven on the line and just blitz all day. Oh,
- 18:57Speaker 1: we're playing Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback of all time,
- 18:59Speaker 1: against the Blitz kind of like, kind of that reminds
- 19:03Speaker 1: me of the bos the Jets Raiders yell, Which is
- 19:06Speaker 1: why I say this calls into a lot question a
- 19:09Speaker 1: lot of these things. It also puts a different light
- 19:11Speaker 1: on that season ending Week nineteen game right here against
- 19:16Speaker 1: the against the Patriots, right, like especially like, I have
- 19:18Speaker 1: no doubt that the twenty nineteen Dolphins tanked all year,
- 19:23Speaker 1: but I also have no doubt that they played hard
- 19:26Speaker 1: all year, do you know what I mean? Right? So,
- 19:29Speaker 1: I think Flora's one quote unquote in twenty nineteen, if
- 19:35Speaker 1: if Ross was telling him to lose on purpose, flora
- 19:38Speaker 1: Is one by saying, we're gonna lose our shared games
- 19:41Speaker 1: because we're getting rid of Mica Fitzpatrick and larn Me Tunsil, right,
- 19:44Speaker 1: all of our good players. We're gonna go, We're going young,
- 19:48Speaker 1: We're gonna lose, but we're gonna play hard. Right, And
- 19:50Speaker 1: they did, right, And and the trading of like guys
- 19:53Speaker 1: like Fitzpatrick and those other ones, Flora's can say that's
- 19:57Speaker 1: out of my hands because they had at GM that
- 19:59Speaker 1: he's making the stuff right, Uh, yeah, that's I mean,
- 20:02Speaker 1: that's just what's hard. It's like and and does it
- 20:04Speaker 1: even have to be explicit that Flores said no? Did
- 20:07Speaker 1: he I mean, I'm not saying he said yes, But
- 20:10Speaker 1: did he be you know, did he play the middle
- 20:11Speaker 1: of the field and be like, all right, we'll see
- 20:13Speaker 1: what we can do. But only he knows what really
- 20:17Speaker 1: did that? I know? But maybe he was like yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 20:21Speaker 1: we're gonna try to lose in. But if he did that,
- 20:23Speaker 1: that is that then the natural conclusion would be that
- 20:26Speaker 1: Russ was paying him one hundred thousand for every one
- 20:28Speaker 1: of those right, And Flora seemed to be adamant, saying
- 20:33Speaker 1: that he turned down that request. He said no, right,
- 20:35Speaker 1: but but I'm not seeing I don't. I don't have
- 20:38Speaker 1: any doubt that if it happened that Flores turned it down.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I don't really have any doubt because I, first of all,
- 20:45Speaker 1: I don't think he's a dumb guy. And I don't
- 20:47Speaker 1: think if you do accept anything tacitly or otherwise, I
- 20:52Speaker 1: don't think you're finally a lawsuit right if you were
- 20:55Speaker 1: exact exactly like, I don't write about this one hundred
- 20:58Speaker 1: thousand dollar check that I get I mean actually taking
- 21:00Speaker 1: the money. I actually you actually did it. If you
- 21:04Speaker 1: actually did it, you're gonna call like and you're going
- 21:07Speaker 1: and then I'm gonna hire you. Right. No, No, I
- 21:11Speaker 1: I am fairly confident that he said in no uncertain
- 21:15Speaker 1: terms of we're not doing that, right. I just think
- 21:18Speaker 1: it's a head coach. That's That's where I'm kind of
- 21:19Speaker 1: living right now, is is it's it's knowing what the
- 21:22Speaker 1: head coach owner relationship is a little bit. It seems
- 21:26Speaker 1: like there's some wiggle room into what I think as
- 21:28Speaker 1: a head coach I need to do to lose this
- 21:30Speaker 1: game as to what the owner might win us or
- 21:32Speaker 1: what fans might be watching. So like you talked about,
- 21:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna take my starting quarterback out in the same
- 21:36Speaker 1: quarter Like that's obvious, right, everybody able to say, what
- 21:39Speaker 1: the hell's he doing? You know, whereas we're gonna blitz
- 21:41Speaker 1: some more than we probably should. It's a subtle thing
- 21:44Speaker 1: that most people probably would have noticed and certain That's
- 21:46Speaker 1: why Eric brings up a great example of that all
- 21:48Speaker 1: out blits that the Jets did to give up the
- 21:52Speaker 1: bomb against the rates that didn't pass the smell test
- 21:56Speaker 1: at the time. The guy got fired for it. But
- 22:00Speaker 1: now you wonder was there something else, you know, maybe
- 22:04Speaker 1: maybe it was Adam gas at it was so maybe
- 22:07Speaker 1: Adam Gase wasn't in on it. Maybe the old maybe
- 22:10Speaker 1: Woody Johnson, you know, or whatever Johnson was in charge.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Then um, maybe he went to Greg Williams and said, hey, yeah,
- 22:21Speaker 1: let's see if let's see what we can do here.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Greig Williams, the guy who's been known to the rules
- 22:27Speaker 1: are right. It's just I just want to wake up
- 22:32Speaker 1: one day and there'll be a major NFL story and
- 22:35Speaker 1: we're not involved in anyway. But no, it just this
- 22:38Speaker 1: one's pretty close. I mean, this is there's a there's
- 22:41Speaker 1: a text exchange that sort of illustrates that the Giants
- 22:46Speaker 1: had already made their decision right, And you know, I
- 22:48Speaker 1: think that happens a million times. I've interviewed for jobs
- 22:51Speaker 1: that I was told in no uncertain terms that yeah, yeah,
- 22:55Speaker 1: I can't happened to me twice. I mean, I just
- 22:59Speaker 1: think part of at his life now it's not apples
- 23:02Speaker 1: to apples, because you can make an argument that Flores
- 23:06Speaker 1: wasn't a candidate because of his race, and you can't
- 23:09Speaker 1: make that argument with with me obviously, So maybe I
- 23:12Speaker 1: don't necessarily think that. I think these teams that pick
- 23:15Speaker 1: other guys only they know what's in their heart, you know.
- 23:19Speaker 1: I don't know John Marra, I don't know if he
- 23:22Speaker 1: really said, you know what, these two guys are really good,
- 23:24Speaker 1: let's go with the white guy. Only he knows that,
- 23:27Speaker 1: you know. But that's to me, that's kind of hard
- 23:30Speaker 1: to believe, especially they had like a they had a
- 23:33Speaker 1: black general manager who won titles, right, Jerry Reese, Yes, right.
- 23:38Speaker 1: I mean I just can't I don't know if that's
- 23:43Speaker 1: a whole whole different thing to me. And that's a
- 23:45Speaker 1: mess too, and that's a problem, and they haven't been
- 23:47Speaker 1: able to fix it. Mike said it with the Rooney rule.
- 23:50Speaker 1: The Rooney rule I think has done more harm than
- 23:52Speaker 1: good unfortunately, and I think in this case it's it's
- 23:56Speaker 1: really destroyed the giants the ownership. Because if they didn't
- 24:00Speaker 1: have the Rooney rule and they just hired Brian Dable,
- 24:02Speaker 1: would anybody be calling them racists today? No? But because
- 24:06Speaker 1: they had a Rooney Rule and they had to have
- 24:07Speaker 1: Brian Flores in and then they got caught as having
- 24:11Speaker 1: already identified the guy they wanted. Now, they're racist. Yeah,
- 24:16Speaker 1: it's just hard. It's it's it's hard, and I mean
- 24:18Speaker 1: I was you know, it took a little encouragement last
- 24:20Speaker 1: night from seeing what they were doing at the Senior
- 24:22Speaker 1: Bowl and they're having some you know, lower level coaches
- 24:24Speaker 1: step up and actually coach. I forget what they think
- 24:26Speaker 1: they called the elevating coaching, but Duce Staley was coaching
- 24:30Speaker 1: one of the teams. And you know, it's just it's
- 24:32Speaker 1: hard to to to legislate it and to come up
- 24:35Speaker 1: with a thing a rule like that and have that
- 24:37Speaker 1: be what just makes it okay. It's like everybody has
- 24:40Speaker 1: to actively want it. And you know, I think the
- 24:43Speaker 1: NFL has made some strides like that, but it's it's
- 24:46Speaker 1: I think Brian Flora is what he's doing now is
- 24:48Speaker 1: gonna really throw the hammer down on it and you know,
- 24:51Speaker 1: maybe hopefully pick up the pace and and you know,
- 24:54Speaker 1: get rid of the charade of that, the charade of
- 24:57Speaker 1: you know, have an interview somebody and you know realize
- 25:00Speaker 1: that you know, obviously there's plenty of talented minority coaches
- 25:03Speaker 1: out there that just take the chance and you know,
- 25:05Speaker 1: to continue to foster those guys and you know, give
- 25:07Speaker 1: them opportunities like they're doing at the Senior Bowl. So
- 25:09Speaker 1: it's it's it's such a complicated issue, like it and
- 25:14Speaker 1: like I want it to be I want and it's
- 25:17Speaker 1: impossible to get this because, as Paul said, you don't
- 25:19Speaker 1: know what's in people's heads. You don't know why they're
- 25:22Speaker 1: making the decision they're making. I mean, it's very simplistic
- 25:25Speaker 1: to extrapolate that because they hired one person over another,
- 25:28Speaker 1: it's because of you know, uh, superficial factors. But um,
- 25:35Speaker 1: clearly there are more qualified minority coaches in the league
- 25:40Speaker 1: than there are coaches who are one. But how do
- 25:45Speaker 1: you how do you mandate it? How do you make
- 25:48Speaker 1: it happen? How do you force teams to hire it? Like,
- 25:51Speaker 1: how do you do that? I don't know. How do
- 25:52Speaker 1: you prove that the fact that there's only one means
- 25:56Speaker 1: it's racist? Right? It's it's I think it's a lot
- 25:59Speaker 1: of grass roots. I mean that's I think you got
- 26:01Speaker 1: to start at the at the lowest levels and you know,
- 26:03Speaker 1: and and really plant the plant the field, so to
- 26:06Speaker 1: speak of, you know, putting these young coaches that have
- 26:09Speaker 1: potential and you know, giving them the tools to succeed
- 26:12Speaker 1: and to grow and to you know, expose them to
- 26:15Speaker 1: more things. I mean, you know how many coaches for
- 26:17Speaker 1: the Patriots have come through the you know, the Minority
- 26:18Speaker 1: Coaching Fellowship, a lot of their former players, I mean
- 26:21Speaker 1: Troy Brown. So you know, I'm not saying that the
- 26:24Speaker 1: NFL has gotten this one who's currently on the staff.
- 26:27Speaker 1: I think, you know, I do think that there are
- 26:29Speaker 1: things out there. Um, I just I think the Bruney
- 26:31Speaker 1: rules where you lose it because that's, like you said,
- 26:34Speaker 1: that's like mandating it. It becomes just kind of a box.
- 26:36Speaker 1: You've got a check now again, whereas you know, when
- 26:39Speaker 1: you're actively making effort at the at the lower levels
- 26:42Speaker 1: and with the assistant coaches and you know, grooming them
- 26:45Speaker 1: and giving them the experience so that when it does
- 26:47Speaker 1: come time to interview coaches, that these are coaches who
- 26:49Speaker 1: have done a lot and have experience and you know,
- 26:52Speaker 1: coach both sides of the ball or multiple position groups.
- 26:54Speaker 1: And you know, then then it becomes you know less
- 26:56Speaker 1: about him or him, it's about whose experience, who's been
- 26:59Speaker 1: around and one of the things. And we will get
- 27:01Speaker 1: the listeners involved here at web radio, at Patriots dot
- 27:04Speaker 1: com and the ACE ticket Hotline eight five five Pats
- 27:06Speaker 1: five hundred momentarily. So if you're on the line, stay there,
- 27:09Speaker 1: we'll get to you. If you're writing in, we'll get
- 27:11Speaker 1: your emails as many as we can. But just to
- 27:14Speaker 1: continue adding to that, one of the problems I think
- 27:15Speaker 1: the NFL has always had, and maybe it's not just
- 27:19Speaker 1: the NFL, maybe it's sports in general, but I focus
- 27:21Speaker 1: on this league. They seem to retread coaches. You know,
- 27:26Speaker 1: a name that you recognize automatically gets associated with an
- 27:29Speaker 1: opening for a job because you know that name. You know,
- 27:32Speaker 1: like take, for instance, just throwing it out there because
- 27:36Speaker 1: it's timely, Bill O'Brien's name. You know, the Patriots need
- 27:39Speaker 1: an offensive coordinator. What Bill O'Brien obviously, because they know
- 27:42Speaker 1: the name. He's been here before, obviously makes a lot
- 27:44Speaker 1: of sense. But you know, why not one of these
- 27:47Speaker 1: other very qualified, you know, minority coaches who haven't had
- 27:51Speaker 1: the opportunity yet. Why did they automatically go to think
- 27:55Speaker 1: familiar the same way about flora Is coming back. I
- 27:57Speaker 1: mean I'd be like, hey, I'd bring him back for
- 27:59Speaker 1: the defense, sure, But I mean, like the retreading of
- 28:03Speaker 1: coaches to me has always been you know, like back
- 28:06Speaker 1: in the day, like you know, Marty Schartenheimer who was
- 28:08Speaker 1: a good coach, but like his name would always come
- 28:10Speaker 1: up when there was an opening, and it's like the
- 28:13Speaker 1: North Turner another one, like there's always feel like that.
- 28:15Speaker 1: There's less of that now. I think, less aging out
- 28:19Speaker 1: and well, I just think in general like the retreads,
- 28:21Speaker 1: because I don't I mean I look at the jobs
- 28:24Speaker 1: and I hear, you know, like last year, like I
- 28:28Speaker 1: had never heard the name Nick Siriani last year, I
- 28:31Speaker 1: mean either you know, No, I was familiar with Brandon Staley,
- 28:35Speaker 1: but not to the point where I thought he got
- 28:39Speaker 1: the job. This year, you know, Kevin O'Connell is the
- 28:42Speaker 1: odds on favorite right now, I guess for the Minnesota
- 28:45Speaker 1: Vikings job. Uh, you know David Culley last year, Like
- 28:50Speaker 1: I didn't know who David Cully was. Yeah, and he
- 28:53Speaker 1: gets a job you know with you Like, I just
- 28:55Speaker 1: I don't think that there is as much of that, Oh,
- 28:59Speaker 1: you know, who's the best available, uh Shannahan or Schottenheimer
- 29:03Speaker 1: that we can hire, or you know, some guy who's
- 29:05Speaker 1: already had two jobs. I don't think there's as much
- 29:07Speaker 1: of that going on right now. I think a big
- 29:09Speaker 1: a part of it is you said Shanahan. I mean,
- 29:11Speaker 1: I think it's some of the success of Kyle Shanahan
- 29:13Speaker 1: and kind of his tree, because a lot of these guys,
- 29:16Speaker 1: you know, McVeigh, they all kind of came out of that.
- 29:18Speaker 1: So I think like part of what I think has
- 29:20Speaker 1: pushed some of those guys in. Some of those reach
- 29:22Speaker 1: heads have aged out, But I think it's been kind
- 29:24Speaker 1: of the success of Shanahan the Rams though. That tree,
- 29:27Speaker 1: that's what's happening, really blossomed in. Look at them. Look
- 29:30Speaker 1: at what the McVeigh tree is doing right now. Yeah,
- 29:33Speaker 1: Zach Taylor, it's in the Super Bowl, right this could
- 29:36Speaker 1: be the fourth year in a row. A guy off
- 29:38Speaker 1: of his tree is going to get a job if
- 29:40Speaker 1: O'Connell gets it, and you know, you mentioned the individuals
- 29:45Speaker 1: Byron Leftwich, you know with the Jags. Evidently that's his
- 29:49Speaker 1: job if he wants it. Yeah, I don't know what's
- 29:53Speaker 1: if it's all about Trent Balky, I don't know, and
- 29:55Speaker 1: we'll see. I don't know what's going on there, but
- 29:58Speaker 1: I haven't seen a lot of Josh McDaniel's like a
- 30:02Speaker 1: guy who's already had a job and he's gonna But
- 30:04Speaker 1: I guess, you know, like I'm thinking of maybe more recently,
- 30:09Speaker 1: like a guy like Dan Quinn. It's great coordinator, Like
- 30:12Speaker 1: he was a head coach after the Super Bowl a
- 30:14Speaker 1: few years ago. We got the Falcon's job, right, you know,
- 30:18Speaker 1: didn't work out with him with Atlanta, But as soon
- 30:20Speaker 1: as he gets fired as the head coach, he's scooped
- 30:23Speaker 1: up to automatically take a coordinator job elsewhere. Oh, like
- 30:26Speaker 1: that's going to happen with everybody I know. But like
- 30:29Speaker 1: that's that's my point, where like you don't want to
- 30:31Speaker 1: force it, you know, because obviously these guys have connections
- 30:34Speaker 1: with coaches around the league, and you go with the
- 30:36Speaker 1: guy you're familiar with, and you want to hire somebody
- 30:38Speaker 1: that you already know. But like there's an opportunity there
- 30:41Speaker 1: to maybe promote or given give a chance to somebody
- 30:44Speaker 1: who's working their way up and hasn't gotten a chance
- 30:48Speaker 1: to do it before. Like I think there's there's too
- 30:50Speaker 1: much of a reflex reaction to automatically go with a
- 30:53Speaker 1: name you know, as opposed to trying to do do
- 30:56Speaker 1: the effort, make the effort to try to look for
- 30:57Speaker 1: somebody new and again that but again I don't want
- 31:01Speaker 1: to force it. I don't think that's rael I. I
- 31:03Speaker 1: don't think I think that's the world. I mean, yes,
- 31:05Speaker 1: but I think there's plenty, you know, like level of
- 31:07Speaker 1: familiarity with I mean that most can have. That's a
- 31:12Speaker 1: coordinator job if he wants one. I mean, I don't
- 31:14Speaker 1: think there's any doubt about that, right, I'm just saying
- 31:16Speaker 1: it's it's that's something it is hard to that's hard
- 31:19Speaker 1: to mandate, Like, no, you can't go with the guy
- 31:21Speaker 1: you're familiar with, Like, how do you tell somebody that? Right?
- 31:24Speaker 1: You know that? So it's it's it's almost an impossible
- 31:27Speaker 1: riddle to to try to to solve anyway. Uh, all right,
- 31:32Speaker 1: anything else on the on the YAH because we like
- 31:35Speaker 1: to watch the Sports Hub and it's on and um,
- 31:38Speaker 1: it's an interesting thing now that I guess Ian Rappaport
- 31:42Speaker 1: had a factoy that the Patriots were interested in possibly
- 31:46Speaker 1: trying to trade for Derek Carr prior to last season,
- 31:51Speaker 1: before before before they drafted round and Mac Jones. Huh. Interesting,
- 31:56Speaker 1: I thought we I thought we had heard that kind
- 31:58Speaker 1: of scuttle but a little bit at the time we did.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I don't know if that was like what do we
- 32:04Speaker 1: do a video about it, an on air thing, Okay,
- 32:07Speaker 1: But yeah, I think I have to say I earned
- 32:11Speaker 1: a lot of respect for Derek Carr this year and
- 32:13Speaker 1: just how he how he handled it, that the whole
- 32:16Speaker 1: you know Gruden thing, and the leadership he showed, and
- 32:19Speaker 1: you know, just a lot of the comeback ability I
- 32:21Speaker 1: think he flashed throughout the year. If he had asked
- 32:23Speaker 1: me last year, I probably would have been nih But
- 32:27Speaker 1: you know now, I mean, how old is he though
- 32:29Speaker 1: he's he's got to be around thirty, right, right, Derek Carr? Yeah,
- 32:33Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm I I probably would have been
- 32:35Speaker 1: on board with that. Oh I would have. I would
- 32:37Speaker 1: have I would have taken Car last year. Yeah, yeah,
- 32:42Speaker 1: and you would have loved him. It's different now you
- 32:44Speaker 1: drafted one if you know, but don't know you're gonna
- 32:46Speaker 1: be able to draft one. No, when you're looking into it.
- 32:48Speaker 1: But I think if they had gotten Car last year,
- 32:50Speaker 1: don't you think a lot of people would have looked
- 32:52Speaker 1: at that as oh, he's clearly another bridge quarterback until
- 32:55Speaker 1: they find the regular guy. Because I don't think a
- 32:57Speaker 1: lot of people looked at Car the way they look
- 32:58Speaker 1: at him now. After the twenty two. Yeah, I mean,
- 33:01Speaker 1: I certainly don't um, but I think I would have
- 33:03Speaker 1: looked at him as he's a four to five. He's
- 33:05Speaker 1: he's a full four year contract starting quarterback guy for us.
- 33:10Speaker 1: But I think you can make an argument now, like
- 33:13Speaker 1: would you rather have Derek Carr for the next five
- 33:15Speaker 1: years or Mac Jones for the next five years? Yeah,
- 33:19Speaker 1: I could go either way. Yeah, if you guys can
- 33:21Speaker 1: probably convince me it's not one of it's it's a rare,
- 33:25Speaker 1: a rare topic. I'm not overly passionized. Well, I think
- 33:29Speaker 1: Derek Carr's just the right amount of decent and mac
- 33:32Speaker 1: Jones is just the right amount of rookie contract. And
- 33:35Speaker 1: you ask me the same question next year and mac
- 33:38Speaker 1: Jones comes out and improves by twenty percent across the
- 33:41Speaker 1: board and everything, and I'll say, not close anymore, mac Jones, allow.
- 33:46Speaker 1: And I mean another interesting part of the argument will
- 33:48Speaker 1: be seeing how how he does with Josh and how
- 33:51Speaker 1: he kind of assimilates into into that system and you
- 33:54Speaker 1: know what kind of success he has. That might be
- 33:56Speaker 1: a little bit of a preview of how things might
- 33:58Speaker 1: have looked here. All right, Uh, let's get some Uh,
- 34:01Speaker 1: let's get some listeners involved in this here show. Let's
- 34:03Speaker 1: start on the ACE ticket hotline, Joaquin and Santa Rosa,
- 34:06Speaker 1: good good morning out there, Good morning to you. How
- 34:10Speaker 1: are you guys doing good? How are you what's up?
- 34:12Speaker 1: Doing good? Doing good? Just a work just taking a
- 34:15Speaker 1: little break one and chime in on you guys. Um,
- 34:18Speaker 1: I'm a little late to the party. So, um, first,
- 34:21Speaker 1: I want to start off with what a hell of
- 34:24Speaker 1: a career Tom Brady had in the span of that time.
- 34:28Speaker 1: I mean just not only as a Patriots fan, but
- 34:30Speaker 1: as a you know, as a fan of his like
- 34:32Speaker 1: playing as well. I mean just incredible and I'm forever
- 34:35Speaker 1: think well as a Patriots fan for everything that he's
- 34:37Speaker 1: done for us. I mean just amazing. But I had
- 34:42Speaker 1: one question for you guys, and I'll take it off
- 34:44Speaker 1: the air because I got to go back to work, right. Um, realistically,
- 34:48Speaker 1: who do you guys see the Patriots getting or or
- 34:52Speaker 1: I think getting is a little like too much for
- 34:54Speaker 1: what I would say, consider bringing in for the offensive
- 34:57Speaker 1: coordinator position and I'll take it off the air, all right,
- 35:00Speaker 1: Thanks Joaquin, appreciate the call. Yeah, I know rap Sheet
- 35:03Speaker 1: had a little bit on Bill O'Brien. Um, nothing definitive,
- 35:06Speaker 1: but said, you know, if he thinks both sides would
- 35:08Speaker 1: have some interest in it. So it was a little
- 35:10Speaker 1: bit too Nick Saban said, not as far as I know. Um,
- 35:17Speaker 1: I know, I think that there was also some uh
- 35:19Speaker 1: some mention about Adam Gase, but I don't know how
- 35:23Speaker 1: many real like And we talked about familiarity, I mean,
- 35:26Speaker 1: and I think that's where you immediately go, especially with
- 35:29Speaker 1: this team, where I don't think you've seen a lot
- 35:30Speaker 1: of high level coordinators kind of come in and and
- 35:34Speaker 1: instantly step into to the new job when they haven't
- 35:36Speaker 1: really been here much. I mean, you know, it's it's
- 35:38Speaker 1: obviously been a very small sample size in terms of
- 35:41Speaker 1: offensive coordinators. What have you had three, three or four guys? Um?
- 35:45Speaker 1: Defensively you've had a bunch of years you haven't even
- 35:48Speaker 1: had one, you know. Um. But in both cases, the
- 35:50Speaker 1: systems haven't really changed. Yeah, right, that and that's and
- 35:54Speaker 1: that's why I think it's a little bit of an
- 35:55Speaker 1: unknown right now. And you know, even with a guy
- 35:57Speaker 1: like Gaye, who Bill Belichick's expressed uh, you know, support
- 36:01Speaker 1: of and you know he thinks he's a good coach
- 36:03Speaker 1: and everything, but you know, just how is it going
- 36:05Speaker 1: to change. Is he going to bring in somebody who's
- 36:07Speaker 1: kind of autonomous and you know, able to run the
- 36:09Speaker 1: show like Joshua's last year with Mac and you know,
- 36:12Speaker 1: let Bill do what he does? I mean, is he
- 36:14Speaker 1: And then then we talked about it. Does it feed
- 36:15Speaker 1: into the defensive side, like, how's Bill going to divide
- 36:18Speaker 1: up his time this year? Is he going to spend
- 36:20Speaker 1: you know, I have to spend time with both sides
- 36:21Speaker 1: of the ball as he gets a coordinator on the
- 36:24Speaker 1: same page as him and his coaching staff, um, you know,
- 36:27Speaker 1: or is he ready to promote somebody as the defensive
- 36:30Speaker 1: coordinator and you know, let or even bring somebody in
- 36:33Speaker 1: and let them work and he just kind of does
- 36:36Speaker 1: more overseeing than anything. So I'm really curious how it's
- 36:39Speaker 1: all going to play out, how it will affect the
- 36:41Speaker 1: Patriots in terms of their system, in terms of what
- 36:43Speaker 1: they're asking Mac Jones to do this year, learning new
- 36:45Speaker 1: things or what. Um. And if it is somebody like
- 36:48Speaker 1: Adam Gase, what what does he bring? What is the
- 36:49Speaker 1: new kind of twist that you know, stylistically that that
- 36:52Speaker 1: he brings to the party. So um, But you know,
- 36:54Speaker 1: I think it always starts with Billy Oh and the
- 36:56Speaker 1: familiarity and somebody who's been here and a move that
- 36:58Speaker 1: you know reasonably would seem to make sense for him
- 37:00Speaker 1: to get back to the NFL level and you know,
- 37:02Speaker 1: do what Josh did and return. Um. I've said before,
- 37:05Speaker 1: I love you know, the fact that he's had some
- 37:07Speaker 1: experience around the league and you know, had to coach
- 37:09Speaker 1: different quarterbacks and you know, has tried to take what
- 37:12Speaker 1: he learned here and apply it elsewhere and make it
- 37:14Speaker 1: digestible for other players. And you know, it's something that
- 37:17Speaker 1: I think somewhat Josh was a little bit spoiled with
- 37:20Speaker 1: that He coached Tom Brady and he's you know, working
- 37:23Speaker 1: every day with a guy who's completely on the same
- 37:24Speaker 1: page as him. They've been together forever. They know, they
- 37:27Speaker 1: speak the same language, and never you know, has less
- 37:30Speaker 1: experience trying to take that out and apply it to
- 37:32Speaker 1: other players. So, um, it's it's a it's a fascinating
- 37:36Speaker 1: question that this offseason, how they're going to go what
- 37:38Speaker 1: direction on both sides with the coordinator positions. Yeah, I
- 37:41Speaker 1: just wonder if they if they are at a point
- 37:43Speaker 1: where they you know, run out of guys who are
- 37:46Speaker 1: familiar with the system to coach. I might have to say, well,
- 37:49Speaker 1: we're gonna have to go with somebody who may have
- 37:50Speaker 1: new ideas or you know, a new system entirely, which
- 37:55Speaker 1: is an ideal, but I think that there's some new ideas,
- 37:58Speaker 1: like you know, and I don't want to to be
- 38:00Speaker 1: as like a shot at Josh or that, but I
- 38:01Speaker 1: just you know, they've been here a while, like you
- 38:04Speaker 1: just you want a fresh set of eyes. You want
- 38:06Speaker 1: you know, we knew last year kind of what that
- 38:08Speaker 1: offense was, and you know how they would manufacture plays
- 38:12Speaker 1: sometimes with the double passes, trick plays, that kind of thing.
- 38:15Speaker 1: You know what, what does the new coordinator bring that's new,
- 38:18Speaker 1: that's exciting that you know, maybe is something that opponents
- 38:21Speaker 1: aren't necessarily expecting. I think you've had a chance of
- 38:24Speaker 1: the last couple of years to lock in on this
- 38:25Speaker 1: Patriots offense without Tom Brady, with Cam Newton, with Mac
- 38:29Speaker 1: Jones and Josh McDaniel's at the helm. So you know
- 38:32Speaker 1: what changes now You've got a good little base for
- 38:34Speaker 1: Mac to you know, build off of. I'm sure Josh
- 38:37Speaker 1: you know, did a great job this year and you know,
- 38:39Speaker 1: getting him into the NFL and getting him experience and
- 38:42Speaker 1: I mean the way he was able to digest everything
- 38:44Speaker 1: was you know, remarkable. Which quick aside, you know her
- 38:47Speaker 1: Jim Naki talking last night on the Senior Bowl and
- 38:49Speaker 1: he just brought up Mac and you know, he said,
- 38:51Speaker 1: the quarterbacks here, a lot of times they come they
- 38:53Speaker 1: haven't even huddled up, and he's like, you know, you
- 38:54Speaker 1: look at Mac Jones was able to come in and
- 38:57Speaker 1: just right away it was able to get in the huddle,
- 39:00Speaker 1: get guys, you don't get the play out, break the huddle,
- 39:02Speaker 1: get up and take the snap. And you know, just
- 39:04Speaker 1: even something as simple as that on the surface, I
- 39:06Speaker 1: think for a lot of fans might be like a
- 39:08Speaker 1: no brainer. Alo of course any quarterback can do that. Um,
- 39:11Speaker 1: I think that you know, speaks a little bit to
- 39:13Speaker 1: you know, just Max's preparedness. But overall, how is a
- 39:16Speaker 1: new OC gonna mesh with him? And again the other
- 39:19Speaker 1: been of news was the quarterback coach he's going to
- 39:22Speaker 1: Vegas as well. We did some of that. Yeah, I
- 39:26Speaker 1: just hear agree over heart agree he's going to be
- 39:28Speaker 1: the quarterbacks coach in with the Raiders. So, um, it'll
- 39:31Speaker 1: be a new a new staff in that room for
- 39:33Speaker 1: Mac next year. So there's there's that first other domino
- 39:36Speaker 1: to fall. We were wondering who on the staff he
- 39:38Speaker 1: might take. They're interviewing other defensive coordinators too, because I
- 39:41Speaker 1: had wondered, if you know, if Mayo might be it
- 39:43Speaker 1: might be a target for for them to grab. But
- 39:45Speaker 1: it seems like it seems like they're looking around and not.
- 39:49Speaker 1: It doesn't seem like they have him earmarked for it.
- 39:50Speaker 1: All right, another call here, Anthony's in Delaware on the
- 39:54Speaker 1: stick at hotline. Hey, Anthony Hetty, are you guys down
- 39:59Speaker 1: pretty good? What's on your mind? I just said, I
- 40:02Speaker 1: think like three quick questions. Um. I don't know if
- 40:07Speaker 1: you guys talked about it, but Adamazzare put out an
- 40:10Speaker 1: article a couple of days ago, maybe a week ago.
- 40:13Speaker 1: I'm saying that the Patriots, I guess after the bye
- 40:17Speaker 1: week bill, his assistants take to lead. And I don't
- 40:20Speaker 1: know if you guys had any thoughts on that. I've
- 40:23Speaker 1: seen that. I've seen that around, mentioning that early on
- 40:26Speaker 1: he gave the defensive coaches freedom, he took over during
- 40:30Speaker 1: the wind streak, and then he gave it back up.
- 40:32Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't know I've heard this mention,
- 40:34Speaker 1: but I don't buy it. It seems to all fit
- 40:37Speaker 1: nicely with a narrative of Bill um and I mean, really,
- 40:43Speaker 1: how like how much less involved is he? Like? Really
- 40:46Speaker 1: Bill should just be given credit for being seven and
- 40:48Speaker 1: oh last year, right, and then those were the games
- 40:51Speaker 1: he helped out. I don't know. I mean, I do
- 40:54Speaker 1: think that what you can't argue with is that this
- 40:57Speaker 1: defense has kind of looked the same in the last
- 40:59Speaker 1: three years or the way it has been currently structured,
- 41:03Speaker 1: especially with nineteen and twenty one, where you had everybody
- 41:06Speaker 1: pumping it up mid season about how good they were
- 41:09Speaker 1: and the wheels just came completely off the bus. So
- 41:11Speaker 1: there's something going on there. I don't think that it's
- 41:14Speaker 1: Bill Belichick not being involved enough. I just I think
- 41:18Speaker 1: that they need to figure out some kind of new
- 41:19Speaker 1: structure in there, whether it's bringing in a defensive coordinator.
- 41:23Speaker 1: But it's just it's happened too much. They're not buying
- 41:24Speaker 1: in at the most important time a year. They're playing
- 41:26Speaker 1: their worst football down with you, and that's that's a fact. Yeah,
- 41:30Speaker 1: all right, And I just have two more quick questions
- 41:32Speaker 1: and I'll take them off the air. Okay, see jewels
- 41:34Speaker 1: and I remember Paul mentioning something about jewels coming out
- 41:38Speaker 1: of retirement. I don't know if that was just or
- 41:39Speaker 1: about was something that was actually happening? No, And then
- 41:42Speaker 1: not something that was actually happening. No. I think he
- 41:45Speaker 1: just posted like a picture yeah, yeah, like he had
- 41:48Speaker 1: cleats on each Okay, maybe maybe I missed a joke
- 41:51Speaker 1: or something and it wasn't a joke. It was something
- 41:54Speaker 1: on like Twitter. Yeah, like you know, he posted a
- 41:57Speaker 1: picture I think of his cleats or his gloves he
- 41:59Speaker 1: had to marking out. Yeah, like it looked like even
- 42:02Speaker 1: one of those cryptic kind of tweets. And then as
- 42:05Speaker 1: far as the Senior Bowl goals, Um, do you guys
- 42:09Speaker 1: think that because you know, we obviously take a lot
- 42:12Speaker 1: of people from the Senior Bowl. I think Plats Bulpa
- 42:13Speaker 1: has it. Since twenty ten, we've taken forty four players
- 42:17Speaker 1: and then eleven additional ud says. Do you think that
- 42:21Speaker 1: kind of plays into the A? I mean, I guess
- 42:23Speaker 1: it's really my new But do you think that plays
- 42:24Speaker 1: into the age thing and all that kind of stuff?
- 42:28Speaker 1: What do you mean by the age things? They like
- 42:30Speaker 1: to draft older players. I think they draft a ton
- 42:32Speaker 1: of underclassmen too, so I think the Patriots are not
- 42:36Speaker 1: adverse to getting players from anywhere. Thanks Anthony, No, I
- 42:39Speaker 1: never I never heard that. I never heard that they
- 42:40Speaker 1: like to draft older players, well, senior Bowl players. That's
- 42:43Speaker 1: what he's saying. Like the drafted forty four guys, they're older. Yeah,
- 42:46Speaker 1: Senior Bowl guys are obviously senior seniors. Yeah. Um, so
- 42:51Speaker 1: I don't. I I think most importantly for Belichick is
- 42:56Speaker 1: he's looking for specific kinds of players. And I think,
- 43:00Speaker 1: you know, I think it's really um it served him
- 43:03Speaker 1: well for the most part over you know, twenty plus years,
- 43:06Speaker 1: and I think lately it's been a little bit of
- 43:08Speaker 1: a more of a struggle. Now this past draft, this
- 43:11Speaker 1: last year, it looks like they have a really good
- 43:13Speaker 1: draft with three guys that you know, made made an impact.
- 43:16Speaker 1: To me, it's more it's more about opportunity give guys.
- 43:21Speaker 1: You know, you drafted a running back and a quarterback
- 43:24Speaker 1: who got got to play right away, and you got
- 43:27Speaker 1: to see a lot like I love Barmore as you know,
- 43:29Speaker 1: I've been gushing about them all year. If Barnmoller was
- 43:33Speaker 1: the only guy who played in last year's draft, right,
- 43:38Speaker 1: how would you think of it? In terms of the player,
- 43:41Speaker 1: not the draft. If Barmore is the only player to
- 43:44Speaker 1: play last year, Steven Right, you'd be like, he'd be like, oh, well,
- 43:47Speaker 1: they have one guy who plays part time on the
- 43:49Speaker 1: defensive line, and you know, it looks like he can play.
- 43:53Speaker 1: That's the way you looked at it. But when you
- 43:55Speaker 1: have a quarterback that you drafted and he's your starter
- 43:58Speaker 1: from day one, and you have a running back who
- 44:01Speaker 1: I think is every bit as good as Damien Harris
- 44:04Speaker 1: also contributing greatly to the offense, plus a defensive tackle
- 44:09Speaker 1: who has played really well, now you look at Barmore higher,
- 44:13Speaker 1: you look at the draft higher, and you sort of wonder, Okay,
- 44:16Speaker 1: is this a trend? Is where we're going? Now? Yeah?
- 44:19Speaker 1: I think there's another part of that too, PAULI, which
- 44:20Speaker 1: is you get guys to play, You get to know
- 44:23Speaker 1: if they can play. Like what Devin Asias. You could
- 44:26Speaker 1: tell me right now, Ronnie Perkins next year is going
- 44:29Speaker 1: to be a starter and play like eighty percent of
- 44:31Speaker 1: the snaps, and I wouldn't argue with you one bit.
- 44:33Speaker 1: You could also tell me that he will not play
- 44:35Speaker 1: another snap for the Patriots, right and I wouldn't argue
- 44:37Speaker 1: one bit I have absolutely no idea, Right, there's an
- 44:40Speaker 1: advantage to finding out and not waiting two years to
- 44:44Speaker 1: give him a chance. And then you find out and
- 44:46Speaker 1: then you realize, now we really need to replace you know,
- 44:49Speaker 1: this player. And I mean I brought up ASSISI is
- 44:51Speaker 1: just an example of a guy who's a really good one.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Well what could we don't know really anything about him,
- 44:56Speaker 1: and you know, cut to two years ago after they
- 44:58Speaker 1: drafted him, and you know, I mean I particularly wasn't
- 45:01Speaker 1: super high on him, and I mean he was fine.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Thought he that was a kind of a weak draft
- 45:05Speaker 1: class anyway for tight end. But you know, it's just
- 45:07Speaker 1: some of these guys and we took two right dol
- 45:10Speaker 1: Keene as well, same boat, same boat, you know. So
- 45:13Speaker 1: but that's what we talk about. Are they gonna have
- 45:15Speaker 1: to turn it over this year and kind of bite
- 45:17Speaker 1: the bullet on some of these guys, Like if high
- 45:20Speaker 1: Tower doesn't come back, if mccordy doesn't come back, do
- 45:21Speaker 1: you have to bite the bullet on guys like Anthony
- 45:24Speaker 1: Jennings and Ucha and Winovich and you just gotta let
- 45:27Speaker 1: him play And if they can't do it, then you
- 45:28Speaker 1: get rid of him and you replace him other than
- 45:30Speaker 1: letting them just take up a roster spot as a
- 45:32Speaker 1: part time third down player and occasional special teams guy.
- 45:36Speaker 1: You know, and you never have any idea if this
- 45:38Speaker 1: guy's going to be able to contry. And that's why
- 45:39Speaker 1: I you know, that's the genesis of my discussion with Fred,
- 45:43Speaker 1: you know, during the course of the season, Like because
- 45:45Speaker 1: Bill doesn't play him doesn't mean that that's right. And
- 45:48Speaker 1: I'm not telling you that Ronnie Perkins is great. He's
- 45:51Speaker 1: this untapped start that we don't know. I'm saying, let's
- 45:55Speaker 1: find out so we don't go into seasons. You know,
- 45:58Speaker 1: in Ucha's case year right, like what what not? Not
- 46:02Speaker 1: really knowing what is going to be telling us next
- 46:05Speaker 1: summer about what josh Ucha is doing it. I think
- 46:09Speaker 1: is a guy that if you are excited about Cameron mcgron,
- 46:12Speaker 1: at least he had a reason for not playing. He
- 46:16Speaker 1: tore his acl. Bill told you on Draft night he's
- 46:19Speaker 1: not going to be a part of the equation in
- 46:20Speaker 1: twenty twenty one. So if you have some faith that
- 46:23Speaker 1: Cameron mcgron could be something, you're not wrong. We knew
- 46:27Speaker 1: what was going to happen with him. Ronnie Perkins. If
- 46:30Speaker 1: you had some faith in him. It has to at
- 46:32Speaker 1: least be a little bit shaken, yeah, because he didn't
- 46:35Speaker 1: play right, and he wasn't playing in training camp, he
- 46:38Speaker 1: wasn't getting reps. He didn't look like he was part
- 46:40Speaker 1: of the equation from day one when we went out
- 46:43Speaker 1: there and watched, whereas there were plenty of other guys,
- 46:47Speaker 1: you know, younger guys that were Barmore for one, you know,
- 46:51Speaker 1: was kind of involved right from the start. So it's
- 46:55Speaker 1: it's tough. I wish that we got a chance to
- 46:58Speaker 1: see more of the young guys. Yeah, me too, you know,
- 47:00Speaker 1: so we wouldn't have what what Mike just said about
- 47:04Speaker 1: j Whovich Perkins. You know, where do these guys all
- 47:07Speaker 1: fit in? And for as little you know, as like
- 47:09Speaker 1: Winovich did this year, like Ronnie Perkins couldn't have done that,
- 47:12Speaker 1: like you know what I mean. Like, and it's just
- 47:13Speaker 1: kind of a continuing point. What Jon Oh Smith did?
- 47:16Speaker 1: Ye could have done that right, right? You know, I
- 47:19Speaker 1: don't know. Maybe he couldn't. Maybe he's not a blocker either,
- 47:21Speaker 1: or maybe they just like Jon wh Smith as a
- 47:23Speaker 1: blocker that's why he played fifty percent of the place,
- 47:26Speaker 1: or maybe they figured like we paid Jonna Smith fifty
- 47:28Speaker 1: million bucks. We got a plan to me that explains
- 47:34Speaker 1: the thought process heading into the season when you get
- 47:37Speaker 1: about halfway in and you realize I ain't getting it.
- 47:40Speaker 1: You know, Josh all but said it at one point
- 47:43Speaker 1: like late October. You know, you know maybe next year
- 47:46Speaker 1: in the system, you know, blah blah blahy. At some
- 47:49Speaker 1: point do you look at it and say, Okay, we're
- 47:51Speaker 1: not gonna bench John Oh Smith. We still like him
- 47:54Speaker 1: as a blocker, but let's see if we can get
- 47:55Speaker 1: as involved a lot, because now you have another guy
- 47:59Speaker 1: you need. You have another guy who's going to have
- 48:01Speaker 1: a rookie year in year three, right right? And as us, yeah,
- 48:06Speaker 1: a quick email or two before we go back to
- 48:08Speaker 1: the phone. Sullman in the Bay Area. Hey, crew, kudos
- 48:11Speaker 1: to Brian Flores for risking his NFL career to bring
- 48:13Speaker 1: this to the forefront. The Rooney rule is disingenuous as
- 48:17Speaker 1: far as losing games on purpose. Hasn't this already happened
- 48:19Speaker 1: recently in the NFL. The twenty eleven Colts basically barely
- 48:23Speaker 1: tried to win games to get the first pick to
- 48:25Speaker 1: select Luck. I know there's no smoking gun from someone
- 48:27Speaker 1: who was internal, But wasn't that obvious tanking? And I
- 48:30Speaker 1: think tanking is fine. Throw losing games on purpose is not. Yeah,
- 48:34Speaker 1: you made that distinction before, but that might have been
- 48:38Speaker 1: his email. Might might I think that. I think that
- 48:40Speaker 1: what the Dolphins are being accused of right now is
- 48:43Speaker 1: throwing games. And I think that's different than tanking a season. Now.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Maybe I'm wrong, Maybe it's one and the same. I
- 48:50Speaker 1: don't think. And I also think the Colts are a
- 48:54Speaker 1: different situation. I don't think the Colts went into the
- 48:56Speaker 1: twenty eleven season saying we got to do whatever we
- 48:59Speaker 1: can to get Andrew Luck. I think Peyton Manning's status
- 49:02Speaker 1: was up in the air throughout the off season and
- 49:04Speaker 1: right into the summer. And then what did they do?
- 49:06Speaker 1: What did Pollyan do? What I think was foolish by
- 49:09Speaker 1: the way. He didn't just go and roll roll the
- 49:12Speaker 1: dice and go into it. He went and signed Kerry Collins.
- 49:15Speaker 1: That's the quarterback he went with to start the season.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Forgot about him that they went out and got the
- 49:20Speaker 1: best available NFL quarterback and they tried to win and
- 49:26Speaker 1: he was a disaster, Which big surprise. You signed a
- 49:29Speaker 1: guy on the eve of the season and you throw him,
- 49:32Speaker 1: throw him in there. You know. Now once the season starts, yeah,
- 49:36Speaker 1: you know, once you're owing five or whatever whatever it is,
- 49:39Speaker 1: we don't want to win. Let's we got Andrew Luck waiting.
- 49:42Speaker 1: Let's just ride this out. But to me, that's different
- 49:45Speaker 1: than openly going into the game telling your head coach,
- 49:48Speaker 1: we want to lose today, do whatever you can to lose. Yeah,
- 49:50Speaker 1: And that's why I was interested in it because I
- 49:52Speaker 1: think the methodology for tanking is is pretty clear to me.
- 49:55Speaker 1: And that's you know, unloading guys that are expensive, and
- 49:58Speaker 1: you know, there's a whole playbook for it, but the
- 50:01Speaker 1: playbook for trying to throw a game as a head
- 50:03Speaker 1: coach that just don't know, it's very what do you do?
- 50:06Speaker 1: Very complicated? How you would how you would engineer that?
- 50:09Speaker 1: And you know, and that's why I said, like, I
- 50:11Speaker 1: think you could easily say no problem and then not
- 50:13Speaker 1: where do you draw the line? And I'm not trying
- 50:15Speaker 1: to be like a smartass about this, but where do
- 50:17Speaker 1: you draw the line? Like when Bill Belichick, for all
- 50:21Speaker 1: intents and purposes, told Matt Castle to overthrow a two
- 50:24Speaker 1: point conversion that would have tied a game that they
- 50:26Speaker 1: wanted to lose for seating purposes, does that count? Like,
- 50:31Speaker 1: where do you draw the line on that stuff? Yeah? Yeah,
- 50:34Speaker 1: And there's been countless examples of teams that sort of
- 50:37Speaker 1: had their draft suation or their playoff seating sealed and
- 50:43Speaker 1: didn't play you know, X amount of personnel. They clearly
- 50:46Speaker 1: lost that game on purpose. This is why I say
- 50:49Speaker 1: it's tanking, not I'm throwing the game, right. Yeah, I
- 50:53Speaker 1: think I think there's a difference. You know, maybe I'm
- 50:56Speaker 1: the only one that thinks that that's two different things.
- 50:58Speaker 1: And that's fine. My way doesn't have to be the
- 51:01Speaker 1: right way. Again, we're not. Yeah, that way doesn't have
- 51:06Speaker 1: to be the right way. Go back to the phones,
- 51:09Speaker 1: our old buddy Chris with a T I A N
- 51:11Speaker 1: is on. What's up Christian? Hey guys, nothing much? Um man?
- 51:16Speaker 1: What a week? Yeah, never a dull moment, Never a
- 51:20Speaker 1: dulb moment in this league. And this, uh, this stadium
- 51:24Speaker 1: sure isn't. Um you know it's I The thing about
- 51:29Speaker 1: floor is just terrible if that's true. Um, I mean
- 51:32Speaker 1: talk about and attacking like a man's integrity, uh, you know,
- 51:36Speaker 1: in in his profession to try to do that, it
- 51:40Speaker 1: is just awful to get him to throw games. If
- 51:42Speaker 1: it's true, of course, I mean, you know, but in it,
- 51:46Speaker 1: in it, I think this is the one sort of
- 51:48Speaker 1: big thing that the NFL is sort of always worried
- 51:51Speaker 1: about and regards to gambling and stuff, you know, this
- 51:54Speaker 1: type of stuff. Um. So I just that see how
- 51:58Speaker 1: it all plays out. But it's really it's really really
- 52:00Speaker 1: really unfortunate. And and like Paul said, this is you know,
- 52:03Speaker 1: if this is true, like he's got to go m
- 52:06Speaker 1: Ross owner. Yeah. Um. And I just yesterday you guys
- 52:10Speaker 1: were talking about Tuesday, you guys were talking about the
- 52:13Speaker 1: you know, the great Brady Please and uh, you know,
- 52:16Speaker 1: for me to really stand out, the two thousand and
- 52:20Speaker 1: four AFC Championship game in Pittsburgh when he had the
- 52:22Speaker 1: play action a branch Yes that's sixty bomb, Yeah I remember,
- 52:27Speaker 1: and then he taunted the Steelers with my dad very
- 52:31Speaker 1: very branch wave goodbye to the Steelers taunting. No touchdown,
- 52:36Speaker 1: but it was great. Um. And and you know the
- 52:39Speaker 1: record breaking a Moss against the Giants and Week sixteen. Yeah,
- 52:44Speaker 1: yeah that even though that season obviously it didn't then
- 52:47Speaker 1: the way we all wanted it too. There were just
- 52:49Speaker 1: so many memorable ballment, so particularly the play before while
- 52:51Speaker 1: Boss dropped it or Brady I think under threw him
- 52:54Speaker 1: and they just came back and ran the same play.
- 52:56Speaker 1: Like you know, I forgot about that, Christian, that's a
- 52:59Speaker 1: good call it again, Yeah, but do it again. The
- 53:02Speaker 1: players at the top of the game, you know. Yeah,
- 53:05Speaker 1: and even if even with Branch like an old four
- 53:07Speaker 1: like you know, those two guys that the Gail that
- 53:10Speaker 1: they had together and just at the top of their game.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Those are the things I'll remember. Um, he didn't include
- 53:17Speaker 1: the past obviously in his in his h you know
- 53:20Speaker 1: a statement. Well he did recently, just put out a
- 53:23Speaker 1: video about an hour ago. Did you guys see this?
- 53:25Speaker 1: I did, and I think he did that because of
- 53:27Speaker 1: the anniversary of the But there were more Bucks clips
- 53:30Speaker 1: than Patriot clips. I was very upset about it. So
- 53:33Speaker 1: you can't manufacture the Hey can't done. You can't do it.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Somebody will though. You know, I'll remember those plays when
- 53:41Speaker 1: he's in that he can't in five years and not
- 53:43Speaker 1: what he put on his Instagram. So that's how I
- 53:46Speaker 1: love you all. Thank you all all all caps for
- 53:50Speaker 1: making this incredible jobs. Yeah, let's see what he did there. Yeah,
- 53:55Speaker 1: everybody there you go. He made up things. So Christian,
- 53:57Speaker 1: big question for you, who are you rooting for in
- 53:59Speaker 1: the Pro Bowl this week? A r NFC got what
- 54:01Speaker 1: do you got? Who's your pick? Got a hurry pick?
- 54:05Speaker 1: I'm tom totally kidding. Are you even gonna be watching?
- 54:08Speaker 1: Are they wearing pads? In a serious question? Are you
- 54:10Speaker 1: gonna watch Mac Jones? I'll watch Mac, but I haven't
- 54:14Speaker 1: watched the Pro Bowl in like ten years. Yeah, me
- 54:16Speaker 1: neither ever since they left Hawaii. There's no I want
- 54:19Speaker 1: to get the view. I want to get the New
- 54:20Speaker 1: England viewing numbers of the Pro Bowl what they've been
- 54:22Speaker 1: in the last ten years, and the spike with Mac
- 54:25Speaker 1: Jones going in the good Christian goods for you, paul
- 54:33Speaker 1: I wasn't pay he wasn't paying attention. That rats some
- 54:36Speaker 1: of us doing textings, all right, see you later. What
- 54:41Speaker 1: did I miss? He was saying that we were talking
- 54:43Speaker 1: about the Pro Bowl and if the numbers are gonna
- 54:45Speaker 1: spike in New England because Mac is playing, and Christians said,
- 54:47Speaker 1: even if they're not, the NFL will put out a
- 54:49Speaker 1: statement saying that they are. Said that was for you, Paulie.
- 54:52Speaker 1: Oh question. Jeffrom Pennsylvania writes in Hey guys, great job
- 54:56Speaker 1: is always with the show. I'm sure there are others, However,
- 54:59Speaker 1: I just wanted to point out you guys were the
- 55:01Speaker 1: first media personnel I heard who shared my thoughts on
- 55:03Speaker 1: the Rooney Rule. I completely agree with the fact that
- 55:06Speaker 1: more minority representation is needed in all sports, but especially
- 55:09Speaker 1: the NFL. Across the board. However, I believe the Rooney Rule,
- 55:13Speaker 1: while it looks good on paper, is just a rubber
- 55:15Speaker 1: stamp or checkbox in the application process for owners or management,
- 55:19Speaker 1: potentially to humor in quotes minor applicants for sake, for
- 55:23Speaker 1: the sake of the rule, I think this is a
- 55:25Speaker 1: problem that absolutely needs to be addressed, but the Rooney
- 55:28Speaker 1: Rule does more harm than good, especially when it rarely
- 55:31Speaker 1: leads to actual results. Just wanted to say thanks for
- 55:34Speaker 1: making great points on the topic and keep up the
- 55:36Speaker 1: tremendous work. Thank you, Jeff, Thank you Jeff. Yeah, it's
- 55:40Speaker 1: a it's a it's a tough issue. I mean, it's
- 55:42Speaker 1: Brian Flores. He's going to have his hands full, and
- 55:45Speaker 1: I'm sure he knows that when he did it. But
- 55:47Speaker 1: you know, a lot of respect for him and what
- 55:49Speaker 1: he did, and I just I wonder. I mean, I
- 55:50Speaker 1: wonder what the what the mood was mood here with
- 55:55Speaker 1: that when they found that out. And I know that
- 55:56Speaker 1: I know Brian Flores said he didn't let Bill know
- 55:59Speaker 1: that he was going to use this text message. Yeah,
- 56:01Speaker 1: so that I think on CNN and I and IM
- 56:04Speaker 1: sure it's a fair opinion that that people might think
- 56:06Speaker 1: that that might have burned a bridge here, But I
- 56:08Speaker 1: wasn't quite there yet. I mean, I don't, I don't know.
- 56:10Speaker 1: I mean, I would you know, I think in a
- 56:12Speaker 1: perfect world, you would have liked Flores to give him
- 56:14Speaker 1: the heads up of you know, coach, you're not named
- 56:16Speaker 1: in lawsuit, but you know, this mistake I think was
- 56:19Speaker 1: a prime example that you know, really set me off.
- 56:21Speaker 1: And you know, I just want you to know that
- 56:23Speaker 1: it's going to happen. I think I would hope that,
- 56:25Speaker 1: you know, Belichick would at least understand that. But I don't.
- 56:28Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not holding out hope that he's going
- 56:30Speaker 1: to come back here. I just I hope, I hope
- 56:31Speaker 1: he still is able to get a good coaching. I
- 56:33Speaker 1: think it deserves it. I am too, and and I
- 56:36Speaker 1: you know, we entered this offseason with I think nine
- 56:38Speaker 1: head coaching openings when you counted the Saints after after
- 56:42Speaker 1: after Peyton stepped down. Yes, thank you for correcting yourself,
- 56:45Speaker 1: Matt morrel Um. And he filed the suit while there
- 56:50Speaker 1: were still opening like teams hadn't high I don't know
- 56:53Speaker 1: if that's because they were waiting for candidates who were
- 56:56Speaker 1: still involved in the playoffs on either the Bengals, the
- 56:59Speaker 1: or the Rams. We mentioned Kevin O'Connell the RAMSOC who's
- 57:02Speaker 1: probably gonna get the Vikings job. But this is a
- 57:06Speaker 1: question that I don't think I've seen either addressed or
- 57:09Speaker 1: answered anywhere else in the media over the last couple
- 57:11Speaker 1: of days. And maybe you guys have is Brian Flores
- 57:15Speaker 1: still while he's suing the league? Is he eligible to
- 57:17Speaker 1: be hired by any of these teams that have openings. Yeah,
- 57:20Speaker 1: there's nothing that says he can't get a job while
- 57:22Speaker 1: he's still saying the league, right, And evidently he informed
- 57:25Speaker 1: both Houston and New Orleans of his lawsuit and they
- 57:28Speaker 1: still wanted to interview him. Good, So there's that, right.
- 57:33Speaker 1: So all these people saying, you know, you know, speculating
- 57:36Speaker 1: that he's burnt a bridge, I mean, teams might still
- 57:39Speaker 1: want to hire him right in theory or I think so,
- 57:41Speaker 1: I mean the reality deal with I mean, you know,
- 57:44Speaker 1: it's just we don't know all the details, but I
- 57:46Speaker 1: mean he was still able to I mean we saw
- 57:48Speaker 1: it firsthand. A competitive football team that played hard for him. Um,
- 57:52Speaker 1: you know, certainly gave the Patriots plenty of problems. I
- 57:54Speaker 1: you know, I mean as just speaking strictly as somebody
- 57:58Speaker 1: who's seen his team all to Patriots a few times
- 58:01Speaker 1: or not. I mean, they're demolished, but at least get
- 58:03Speaker 1: them when when maybe they weren't quite as talented, or
- 58:06Speaker 1: maybe when they didn't quite have much as to play for. Um.
- 58:09Speaker 1: I think that in and of itself is Hey, if
- 58:11Speaker 1: he gets into a good situation where the owner isn't
- 58:14Speaker 1: asking him to throw games, like you know what, what
- 58:15Speaker 1: couldn't he do? And I mean I think that's uh,
- 58:18Speaker 1: you know, it's it's representative that last game of twenty nineteen.
- 58:20Speaker 1: You talk about all this stuff that he went through,
- 58:21Speaker 1: and the coach was asking him to fight. You know,
- 58:23Speaker 1: he got those guys to play hard, so they were
- 58:25Speaker 1: still playing for him, you know, And I think that
- 58:27Speaker 1: would have been the bigger problem if he had lost
- 58:29Speaker 1: the team, and you know what's going with the owner.
- 58:31Speaker 1: I mean, it clearly seems like he kept that at
- 58:33Speaker 1: that to me is the worry with him. It is
- 58:36Speaker 1: not necessarily that, but like, why was he going through
- 58:39Speaker 1: offensive coordinators like he was changing songs? Why would you
- 58:42Speaker 1: know some of the guys they brought in immediately, you know,
- 58:46Speaker 1: let go you know what? What was some of the
- 58:48Speaker 1: problems behind the scenes. Now I don't know. Maybe this
- 58:51Speaker 1: was the genesis of the problems behind the scenes, right,
- 58:54Speaker 1: was there was that there was a disconnect between maybe
- 58:58Speaker 1: Greer ye and uh Stephen Ross. How does career fit
- 59:02Speaker 1: into this too? Career by the way, a minority, which
- 59:05Speaker 1: I think normally I would think is completely and totally irrelevant.
- 59:09Speaker 1: But in this case, if you're putting it together a
- 59:11Speaker 1: lawsuit about it, yeah, I don't think it is. Um
- 59:15Speaker 1: So you have this potential disconnect between the two. Who
- 59:19Speaker 1: knows and he is related to the former Patriots coach
- 59:22Speaker 1: and personnel guy Bobby Greer, and he's kind of stuck
- 59:24Speaker 1: in the middle. Good friends with Mike, his younger brother
- 59:29Speaker 1: set up my first goal and I played Mike hockey
- 59:30Speaker 1: with Yeah, my first goal, mighty. He was awesome. My
- 59:34Speaker 1: career was the greatest I mean youth hockey player ever
- 59:36Speaker 1: saw in my life. My dad was the coach and
- 59:38Speaker 1: we got him in Sports Illustrated Faces in the Crowd
- 59:41Speaker 1: the year that that that he just was unstoppable. Um.
- 59:45Speaker 1: But you know, I got called up and my first
- 59:47Speaker 1: goal was like there with Mikey, just stand in front
- 59:48Speaker 1: of the net and micros, you know, skating through everybody
- 59:50Speaker 1: in there pretty much. But um, but you know, this
- 59:54Speaker 1: is probably probably probably a good time to maybe share
- 59:57Speaker 1: this story. Was my first experience with racism and my
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: career knocked the crap out of bill Rica in a
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: youth hockey tournament and as we were getting our awards,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: there were some parents that were yelling in the stands.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Parents things, parents, racist things. And I must be really
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: really lucky seven years old. It was it was the
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: first time that you know, it even you know, I
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: had any idea. I mean, granted, you know, I grew
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: up in a very sheltered suburban life. Um, but you know,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: that was the first time for me. And you know,
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: I remember that the town was banned from the tournament.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: There was all kinds of fallout. Um. But you know,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: just kind of weird how that it kind of all
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: intersects around that. Yeah, yeah, that's that's awful. I mean,
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: I thought you were going to say that there were
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: some of the players like in the like in the
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: in the handshake line, I like saying stuff, I don't
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: want anything against bill Rica, but like like when you're
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: that you've never heard of the town, you go there,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: you play, and that that was just always what I
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: think of when I think of bill Ricka. What was
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: that experience at the end of the game when they
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: were handing out the trophy and the parents were very
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: upset because my career had just undressed their whole team.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: Like multiple times we had. We had an incident, Paul.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: You remember when we were down at the Super Bowl
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: in Atlanta. I do. We met up for lunch with
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: with a fan of the show who's a really great guy.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: He's he's contributed emails and calls over the years, and
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: he showed up where we were taping our our TV
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: segment that day and he's like, I want to take
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: you guys out to lunch. So we went out to
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: lunch and we went to this little place right around
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: the corner, and apparently the owner of the establishment was
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: like coming around to people's tables and glad handing and whatnot,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: and he came over. I don't remember exactly what he said,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: but I don't either. It was there he said something
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: to our friend that was clearly uh, I mean, it
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: was overtly racist. And he said it and kind of
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: laughed and like was like as if he had known
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: the guy forever and was like, hey, I went, you know,
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: buddy whatever, like making this joke, like how do you
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: know that? And like Paul and I, Paul and I
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: were like ready to like jump over the table and
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: strangle this guy, right, but like guy taking me out
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: to lunch, You you're putting my lunch in jeopardy with
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: your nonsense, you know, I was. I was angry. Yeah, no,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: I remember what Eric was talking about. It was now.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: I don't really think it was malicious, but it was
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: just in such poor taste and so lame like tone.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: I couldn't believe that someone would would do something like
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: like if you like, I'm sure like you have friends
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: I have friends that like we joke about each other. Friend, No,
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: I mean, we have friends like you joke about like
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: their their ethnicity or you know the fact that you're Italian.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: They they make fun of me for being Italian. You know,
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: you you can do that with people that you are
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: very friendly with, who you've known forever. And this guy
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: who owned the restaurant came over and said this thing
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: to our buddy as if he had known him, like
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: as if they were friends for a long time and
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: knew he could get away with it. Was you, what
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: was your friend's reaction to it? He played it as
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: cool as you could imagine, because but probably happens. My
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: guess is that, Yeah, my guess is that's his life,
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: and and it it just infuriated me. I wanted. I
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: wanted to get up and walk out of the restaurant
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: and like flip the table over on the guy and say,
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: I'm not even paying for your stupid lunch. Yeah, and
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: we're getting the hell out of here. But I wasn't
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: paying for the lunch anyways. No, but I mean our
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: friend to his credit, to his credit, he handled it
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: as well as anybody could have expected. Um, but that
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: was one of the well, certainly the most recent time
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I've come across something that overt And again to post point,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: the guy who said it probably wasn't thinking he wasn't
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: doing it to be mean about it. He just thought
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: he was trying to make a joke. It was trying
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: to be funny. It just wasn't. It just felt so
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: flat that I don't know, I just I and I
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: could just imagine that he does this anytime somebody comes
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: into the restaurant, and I'm thinking, yeah, boy, I've gotten
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: that before. Don't you don't you don't you forget about that?
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: All right, Let's go back to the ACE ticket hot
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: line where Parker is in New York. What's up Parker? Hey, guys,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: I wanted me a comment about the Rooney rule, but
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: I just wanted to say, you know, I think with
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: like when I first read online that like Patriots fans
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: were upset about people about Tom not banking the Patriots
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: fan base, I thought like, oh, like what a bunch
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: of like winey babies, Like who cares? And then I
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: read what he wrote and then I was like, wait
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: a second. He was like pouring out his heart and
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: he didn't mention us at all, And all I could
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: think was, I'm a thirty one year old man. Ever
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: since I was eleven years old, I've been down on
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: my knees praying, like for this man, to like win
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: football games, like calling in favors from God, which is
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: like a personal relationship. And I was like, what are
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: these Bucks fans done for this guy? Like I canceled
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: plans to root him on. You know, I've done all.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: I like every bar I walked into that's not in
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: like Massachusetts. I feel like put my nuts on the
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: table and be like Tom Brady didn't cheat, the Belichick
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: didn't cheat and all this stuff, and it's like I've
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: gone through so much with Tom Brady for the last
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: twenty years, and I was just like, wow, like not
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: gonna say anything. I don't know. For me, I was
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: just like, that hard for you? He was saying, was
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: that hard for you to to to go through all
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: that and win six titles? That that really that was hard? Huh?
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: It balanced it out. It balanced it out. But what
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: I what I wanted to call about was it was
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: about the rooting rule and something that I think, like
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: I haven't heard many people talk about, which is like
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: every company in the United States has to follow the
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: same sort of labor laws and the labor rules, and
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: for whatever reason, the NFL has like found some loophole
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: where they don't have to follow the same rules, and
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: the one I'm talking about is sort of like the
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: five four fifth rule or the adverse impact. And I
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: won't get into like the nitty GRITTYAVI because it's a
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: little wonky, But basically, every single company when they're hiring anybody,
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: at every single stage of the interview process. So if
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: you think about hiring, you have like that interview one,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: interview two, maybe do you give the offer every single stage,
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: there's a mathematical formula that can be made um to
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: determine if there was some sort of discrimination against any
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: protective class, so gender, race, religion, and okay, well I
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: didn't even get to the map. I didn't want to
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: get to wanting basically the selection rate, not the interview rate.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: The selection rate of all qualified candidates for the biggest
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: group can't like the smaller groups, can't be any less
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: than eighty percent than the largest group that makes it
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: through the process. And it's all about transparency, So they
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: basically have to show that of all the only of
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: the qualified candidates, all of those candidates, you can't be
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: selecting a ton more of one group than the other groups.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Only qualified candidates. And so when it comes to the
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: NFL what they should be doing is being way more transparent.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: They need to be showing exactly what qualifications it takes
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: to be a head coach and all the other coaches,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: and then if you qualify, if you're if you meet
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: those qualifications, maybe you've coached for ten years in the
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: league you've done, maybe you've been a coordinator for at
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: least three years, whatever those qualifications are, if you meet
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: those qualifications, you should be able to apply for the job.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: And then the NFL or each team has to do
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: what every other company does, which is show that all
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: the qualified candidates. There isn't sort of this outside like
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: there isn't a lot of one group that seems to
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: be getting selected for each round or getting the job offer.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: It seems like, though I'm sorry to interrupt you, just
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: thinking as you say that, that picking a coach seems
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: to be one of the most subjective things you could
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: try to do for hiring. Like my idea of what
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: a good head coaches might be completely different than what
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: Deuces is and entirely different than what Pauls is. So
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: how do you quantify how do you quantify what determines
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: the qualifications for applying for a head coach perfect. Don't
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: you think that every company thinks they're CEO should be specific,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: or their CFO or their directors. Everyone has a different
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: view on what makes a good a person a good
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: candidate for a position. So don't make it league wide.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: Make every team have to publish what they're looking for
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: in a candidate, because what we've got now is a
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: system where oh you know what, when you see it,
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: it allows them to hire a thirty year old guy.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: So there's only one thing. So like if Robert Kraft
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: says I'm looking for X, Y and Z, he can
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: never hire anything but X, Y and Z. Well, okay,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: so I just stop. This is dumb. I the guy's
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: had five minutes. That's dumb. This is this is This
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: is why every company is very specific in the job
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: requirements that they put out. So Bobcraft doesn't have to
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: say he asked. He could. He could put sort of
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: like maybe lower standards, but there should be some standard
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: for a head coach for training because that's the only
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: way that we can tell if there's some sort of
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: um disparity. And it may sound like it shouldn't happen,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: but that's what every single employer does in the US,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: they say, this is what we're looking for. If you
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: have a college degree, if you have five years of
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: coding experience, if you have this or that, you are
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: elible for this job. So they can determine if people
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: apply who are not qualified for the job. It doesn't
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: matter who. It doesn't matter. They're not a part of
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: sort of the discrimination aspect of it, because it doesn't matter.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: You never have to hire someone that's not qualified what
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: the NFL wants to Sometimes you do specific people. Yeah,
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: well I see your point. Thanks for the call, Parker.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: It just first of all, but I'm just gonna say
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: one sentence and then you guys can talk about whatever
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: on that call. Please, can we just stop confusing real
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: life with sports. It's not the same. The CEO of
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: a company is not the same as a head coach.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: I know, the head coach is the CEO of the
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: football team. He doesn't do what a CEO of a
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: fortune five hundred company does. It's not the same. Like
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: does whole make it all public? It's silly. Yeah. When
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: he was saying that, the I was thinking about Mayo,
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: you know, and especially how the Patriots do things here
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: where you know, he doesn't He's not going to check
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: any of those of those experienced boxes that NFL teams
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: have because technically he's an inside linebackers coach who's been
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: coaching for three years. So I mean, so should he
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: not be allowed a right? That's the point. I mean, like,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: you know, it's it's it's it's you want to see
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: him get the opportunity, but you don't want to see
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: it to just to check a box on the Rooney rule. Um.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: But I mean I do think that at the core
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: of it, though, is is transparency. I don't know if
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: laid out with all the hr you know, dynamics that
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: that go on in corporate America, but um, I think
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: there does need to be, you know, some degree at
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: transparency with the NFL. I mean I think they do
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: what they want. They transparency. Like when I, you know,
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: went for a job, you know, at the Boston Herald
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: and I didn't get it. Was there transparency in that?
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: Did everybody get to see it? No? Did I did?
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: I know? Did I get to see it? No? Like
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I was told you got the job or no, you
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: didn't get the job. Like, yeah, It's it's not like,
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: I mean, I know everybody wants everything to be perfect.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: It's not general law, it's life is hard. Like a
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: lot of us have had to make different choices and
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: do without different things. Like you're not owed anything. That's
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: the problem is everybody just wants it, like because because
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: I deserve it. Like there's a lot of guys that
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: deserve it. A lot of people and a lot of
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: different walks of life deserve more than they get. Um,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: you know, I'll use teachers as a as a great example,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: Like is there a more noble profession than teachers? You
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: don't think they deserve more than they get. Of course
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: they do. It's not the way it works. I mean,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: I mean it's unfortunate. But I mean there's a lot
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: of inequities in life, and they're not all just about race.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: And there's a lot of inequity race, no doubt, gender, gender,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: I mean there's there's a lot. You know, you don't
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: think there's tons of examples of kids that don't have
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: Harvard educations that are far more brilliant than the guy
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: from Harvard who gets the job. This I mean, white guy,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: white guy. This guy went to Harvard, this guy went
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: to Bridgewater State who's getting the job. Doesn't mean he's
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: more qualified. I mean, it's life. It happens. It happens,
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: it's it doesn't make it right. But I mean, you
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: can't just fix it by saying, oh, we're gonna go transparency,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: like everybody's gonna know, Like, that's not gonna that's not
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: gonna fix it. Like legislating morality, it's it's almost impossible
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: to do exactly. That's a great, great phrase, legislating morality. Yeah. Uh.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: One other news item that I forgot to bring up
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: at the top of the show, which was something League
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: Newsworthy that came across since our last show. The Washington
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: football team is no longer the football team. Man, what
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: do we think of the Commanders? I don't hate it.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: I don't I don't know well, and and that's how
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: I feel. And I think that's not a good sign.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: I mean, I guess they just picked the milk toast. Like,
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: no one is gonna get bothered, no one's gonna get excited.
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: It's just the what do they command I don't know. Well,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: you know, it's funny. I the name I had in
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: my head from the beginning was the Washington Presidents and
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: the Commanders is kind of a short form of that
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: commander in chief kind of thing, you know. I'm sure
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: that's what the thought was. Um, And I kind of
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: like they have a logo that's on the one of
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: the jerseys, which is like two stripes underneath like a
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: row of three stars, and I was like, oh, that
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: would have been good on the helmet, Like the helmet
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: is basically just a W like last year, the last
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: couple of years they just had like the numbers. Yeah right, um,
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: and they would have the number on the helmet. I
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: think they're taking away the number, or at least one
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: of the versions they I think they have two different
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: helmets from pictures that the black alternate, right, kind of
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: like a self Navy seal, Um, like yeah, special ops
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: kind of looking thing, which is it's it's actually kind
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: of cool. It's grown on me. My original thought was
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: black has nothing to do with their color scheme, uh
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: in the history of But I hate when teams do that.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: When they tried to, like the like the forty nine
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: ers tried to have black uniforms for a while. It
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: doesn't work, um, especially when when when the Raiders were
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: up in that area, it's like, oh, you're trying to
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: compete with the Raiders now like knock it off. Um.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: But the but the more I saw the pictures, the
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: more like that. And it was monochrome. It was like
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: black shirrup, black pants, black socks, like the whole thing. Um,
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: but it's started thinking, oh, it's more militaristic like special
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: ops kind of like I get it. I can kind
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: of see that. Yeah. Um. And and the name. I
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: don't mind the name at all. We we actually are.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: Our guy Matisse, who's one of our our helping hands
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: with the web was looking up us fans submitted logos
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: and names that that the The Washington was considering, and
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: one of them was the Owls. Did you see that logo? Fantastic?
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: Like that would have been a great a great logo,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: great name. It would have worked fine. But I'm okay
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: with the commanders. I'm okay with it, like it don't
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: love it. I know that's fine. It's fine at least
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: like the Owls. You've got people that that's terrible, and
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: then you have people like it's pretty cool. Right. I
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: don't know, it just it seems like this is kind
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: of what I thought they were going to go with,
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: like an animal mascot, because I was thinking, like, what
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: could they possibly find offensive about an animal? About an animal?
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: They could find something the Lions, Tigers, they're too big.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: Uh Well, I mean, I don't know, but I think
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: Commanders does a good job of sort of incorporating the area,
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: you know, the teams they represent, you know, yeah, kind
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: of like the Utah Jazz, La Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, a
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: lot of Grizzly Bears walking around Memphis, Lanka very much.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: I couldn't even say about giggling, but I liked it.
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: We kind of came down on the side of it
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: felt like a team that should be playing Gotham. It's
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: the generic Batman's team in a movie. I don't want
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: any given Sunday the Sharks and why was why was
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: LT's name Shark in that too? That always threw me
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: that they called him shark, but they were on the
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: Sharks that ever bother you. That's that's a story for
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: another time. I'm just glad I saw the movie. I'm
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: just glad they didn't have something singular they have like
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: a plural. It's not like, man, it's not the red Ye.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: Maybe he was like rattling off all the reasons he
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: liked it. That was one of those he said plural, Yeah,
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: it was plurals at the end, right, like the Washington
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: gridlock just had like a highways touchdown as a gridlock glocker.
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: Does that mean what? Huh? He's in gridlock? Patton, South
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: Carolina is a first time emailer. Should we be concerned
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: about all the jaw about Josh leaving and the timing
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: of it is it's some sort of a referendum on
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: how he feels about mac Jones's future. I get it's
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: an ideal situation for him. Was Ziegler going with him,
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: but the Raiders just seemed like a weird place for
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: him to land. Thanks guys. Um. I mean, I'm sure
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: if you want to read it into that he hated
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: to mac Jones that couldn't get away fast enough. Sure,
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: but I mean, I think this was an opportunity to
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: work with a veteran quarterback who had been established a
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: little bit, you know, so it's in place he's not
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: gonna have to do the same heavy lift that he
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: did this year, probably where he was, you know, doing
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: a lot of hand holding walking him through just the
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: process of being an NFL quarterback. M But I think
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: there were a lot of different factors that made this appealing.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: I see, like I said on Tuesday show, I can
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: see why he went there and what was appealing to
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: him about there, And I didn't I didn't see it
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: as a referendum on Mac. But that said, I think
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: now that he's gone and bo Heart agree's gone, that
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: you know they're they're going to have to institute some
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: plans on both sides of the ball to keep the
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: structure and you know allow I mean, I know Bill
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: likes having a small staff and he likes being able to,
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: you know, have his message not get lost in the
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: telephone game. Um, but it seems like that that kind
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: of was happening a little bit maybe with especially on
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: the defensive ironic, given the events of the weekend. Right,
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: So you know, I think that that that's than really is.
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: As as mentioned a couple times on this show as
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: well already, just how do you how do you reconstitute
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: the coaching staff and make sure that that there's one
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: voice at the top and he's able to not get
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: overwhelmed trying to do too much? Does he? It's interesting. Yeah,
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: I'm with Mike. I think you could definitely make an
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: argument that, well, Josh doesn't think a whole lot of
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: mac Jones. You could, you could make an argument for that.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: I can't tell you you're wrong. I don't look at
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: it that way at all. Really, I think he just
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: looked at it as this. In my opinion, I said
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: this on Tuesday. This is the first chance he had
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: to get a job since the Colts. Yeah, and I
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: think he got this chance because of Dave Ziegler, a
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: guy that he has a good relationship with. You know, uh,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: they've been together for a while. So you think that
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: I think that's why he took it. Well, do you
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: think it's more a reflection on how the Raiders felt
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: about Ziggler, That they were like that first, right, and
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: that Ziegler was like, if you've got to hire me,
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: I got to pick my guy, ye, And they were like, okay,
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: we like you that much, we'll do it. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: And I don't think that they don't like Josh. But
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: I don't necessarily think that Josh was with the number
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: one target on their radar. I think Ziegler was. And
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: then they were like, Ziegler was like, yeah, I mean
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: I think Josh would be a perfect fit for what
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: I want to do, and they were like, okay, yeah,
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: let's do it. Like not that they didn't want to
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: have Josh, but I think that the attraction was Ziegler. First,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: you were to lunch, didn't you, Paul? I didna dear word,
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: what's up with that? I saw the look on Matt's face.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: I knew that was did you give him one of these?
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: He was right a little bit. What happened? I mean,
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: they literally too number two in the second race. Even
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: you's gonna understand that it happens every day. They should
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: have a driver room standby ready for the PU delivery
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: going to Jilts Stadium. Uh. Well, while we continue to
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: wait for Paul's lunch, Todd is in New York, holding
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: patiently on the ticket hot line. Hello Toddy, I'm actually
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: I'm actually down here in Greenville. But oh anyway, good job,
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: Wow new York North he's Todd in North Carolina. You
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: had him in New York. You get it. It's American.
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: It's all the same to us. Canadians. Don't worry about it.
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: Who not where? I say, we don't know any Todds
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: from New York. Who is this? It's Eric Anyway. I
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: really liked your discussion about they're having to be somebody
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: nominated as the you know, the the offensive coordinator and
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. When you guys took the discussion when I
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: brought it up, it was really I think there might
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: have been a lack last year of that direction of
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: having that. There might have been too many messages and
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: you know, my friends on the REV say there's too
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: many Chiefs and not enough Indians, right, and you know,
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: if that keeps going, that could be a problem for
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: the development of Max. So I got a question for
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: each of you, who would you want to put in
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: of all the people available internally externally as the OC
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: and the DC. And that's thanks guys, all right, thanks
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: to I Just I'll go simple, Bill O'Brien, j Rob
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: Mayo like that, you know, promote your Rob Mayou to
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. And I don't think they're going to go
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: out and bring somebody in, but I like that. I
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: would say Bill O'Brien for sure for offensive coordinator. If
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: would just anybody Brian Flores, I'll take him back a
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: defensive yeah, to take him for sure offensively. I mean,
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: I don't know what any of these younger guys like
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: that whose names have come up, like Nick Kaylee or
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: Nick Lombardi or like, I really don't know how good
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: a coordinator they'd be, And obviously you don't know that
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: until the guy gets in the job and has the experience.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: We didn't know how good a coordinator Josh was going
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: to be when he first took over back in what
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: when was that, like oh four or five five, right
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: until the guy actually does it, you know. But so
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: it'd be hard to for me to like root for
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: an internal candidate who I don't know has that Like
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: at least in Mayo's case, I knew him as a player.
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: We kind of know like what his thinking is, uh
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: Flores when he had the job here before it had
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: that famous springtime press availability where he said he wanted
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: to be more aggressive and they ended up being more
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: aggressive on the field, and so we kind of knew
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: like that was his imprint on this. Like I don't
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: know what anybody else said, you know, would want to do.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: I just I guess I would lean towards the side.
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: I think it'd be more probable that somebody like Mick
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: Lombardi would be would get the Josh promotion without the title.
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: Then it would be I don't know the forty nine
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: ers offense, you know, random dude. The only way some
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: random dude from another team comes in is if the
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: said random dude has a connection to Belichick, like Adam Gates. Yeah, like,
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: and we talked about that, you know, had some some
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: crossover with He was on Josh's staff in Denver. He
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: did spend time with Nick Saban both at Michigan State
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: and LSU. He was with Dabelenn McDaniels at Michigan State
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: as yeah, as a young coaching assistant UM, and then
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: he went with Saban to LSU, and then he eventually
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: went to the NFL. He was on Josh's staff. So
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: that's the only way I can see an outside guy
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: someone with a specific that's probably connection small list, but
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: you know, unfortunately you don't really know what that is,
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: right right. That's why I said, I'm like, it's probably
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: the guys from the outside or guys that are either
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: young like Bowhart degree this year, you know, or if
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: they're a little bit older, like Bill O'Brien was a
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: little bit older. He was sort of brought in to
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: sort of learn the offense for a year or two
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: with the idea that hey, Josh is probably going at
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: kind of Dean Peace did that too a little bit,
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: and he had correct me. Hadn't he coordinated at the
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: college level before he got Hilio? Yeah? But he actually
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: when he came on the staff, he was actually an
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: offensive assistant, right, But I mean he had a name, right,
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: he was much higher than sure the traditional offensive but
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: he had at least had some experience in a coordinator's
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: title and running an offense. I think he was at
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: Georgia Tech. Yeah, and that that's how we got George
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: George go right by the way, another guy that you
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: know potentially you know, I mean what you who was
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: this or somewhere or something probably I don't know, somewhere
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: that was different Cleveland. But yes, God has been bouncing.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: But yeah, I just I would take Billy. I hope
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: it's not status quo on the defensive side of the ball.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: I just think that's a that's a bad Yeah, I agree,
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: totally bad. Look going forward, how how things kind of ended.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: I would rather it be Steve Belichick promoted to defense,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: somebodys y somebody take the title and take the responsibility.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: I want to know who to blame yes, I don't
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: want to credit even and you know obviously I'm being
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: you know, funny. I don't want this. Bill took it
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: over when it went well. Yeah, and he gave up
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: the responsibilities both before and after he had taken it
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: back over after the Indian Buffalo games. If you want
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: to tell me, he said, the rest of the year.
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: You go right ahead, if you if you want to trumpet,
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: Bill's brilliant. He took it over after the Dallas game
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: and they took off. I can I can buy that,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: but you can't then wash your hands of it when
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: he gave it up. Yeah, he gave it up when
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: it went south, right, and he can't do it right now. Yeah,
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: I'm not gonna fix it. I told you he was
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: up to you, guys. Good about this playoff game. I
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: think you guys got that because you can make an
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: argument coming out of the bye week. Okay, this is
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: what we did the last seven weeks, guys, we got this. Now,
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: this is what we're gonna do. Okay, all right, you
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: got it, you got it right, right, and then go
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: get an indie. Yeah, and he just says, let's try
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: it again next week. See what happens, right, back, run
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: it back at some point. At some point it Bill
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: wasn't happy with the way things were going. When he
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: quote unquote gave it back. He would have stepped in
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: before they went one, and after the Indiana game, after
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: the Buffalo game in Miami, he took it back and
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: then he thought he had a fix to gain right.
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: Good email from Phelippe in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Guys,
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: does the departure of Josh change in any way the
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: emphasis defensive or offensive on the talent acquisition, front draft
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: and free agency? Also, congrats to Giselle's husband for the
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: incredible career. Um, I don't think so. I don't think
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: it terms of positions. There might be individual players that
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: Josh than somebody else would, but yeah, I don't. I
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: don't think it'll be a noticeable Yeah. I think if
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: they felt like wide receiver was a major need heading
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: into the draft, I don't think that's changed because Josh
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: has gone right and some new guy says no, no,
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: no, no no, I got plenty here. Yeah. I would be
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: curious how much input the coaches have, you know, during
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: the staffing, during during the scouting process. You know, what
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: is that like? How much do they get to review
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: some of the stuff. So I'm watching a little the
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: Senior Bowl stuff going down. Um and of course as
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: soon as I say that, they went to a commercial
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: and NFL network, but they're in this indoor facility. It
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: was the South Alabama which looks you know, reasonably reasonably
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: nice South Alabama. Yeah, they got a full like indoor right.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: Was that invested football is astounding? Was that where um speak,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Welcolm Butler played? No? Who went to I believe West
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: Alabama or West Alabama wasn't played South Alabam. Wasn't there
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: a player that played at South Alabama. I'm getting the
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: nod from from Teas and I don't know if you
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: nobody he's a budding draft guru. Nick isn't a draft
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: Nick a draft Nick isn't what he called him. I
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: called him a guru. Who was the South Alabama cornerback?
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: Somebody from South Albama. I think it was, uh, you
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: get it right in South Alabama? Forget one. No, No,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: don't know. Hey, hey, well you guys are looking out.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: Maybe I'm gonna use this opportunity to mention that where
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: we got some Patriots unfiltered sweatshirts in the works, so
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: perhaps for our potentially Yes, yes, West Alabama is where Butler,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: where Butler went? Okay, I thought there was. I thought
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: there was some other player that was South Alabama high
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: profile one too, cornerbacks, not high profile enough, I mean
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: draft draftwise, draftwise, I thought, I who would maybe started
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: at Florida and left and ended up there. Do you
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: remember everything about this Yes? And I can't remember his name.
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: I having troubled names. I couldn't remember Justin Herbert earlier. Today.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: I do know this name because he calls all the time,
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: cousin Patty an Agawam, Hello Patty? What is a gentleman?
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: Hello Patty? You tell us? Well? Um, I had a question,
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: but before I get to the question, I didn't really
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: speak my piece on Tom Brady and I hope you
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: give me a little bit of a vine, but I'll
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: try and make it quick. Um. To me, he is
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: the quintessential, the best, the greatest, not just NFL player
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: that ever walked on earth, but me he's the greatest athlete,
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: not in the athletic sense, but just just in the
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: fact that what he's what he did for this, for
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: this team, for this organization. Um, I'll give you, I'll
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: tell you a funny story. And I'm kind of like
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: aligned with Paul where I will a big Bloodstow guy.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: You know I got I got into I got into
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: this team in the nineteen nineties, their most the worst,
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: most abysmal year. And I remember like back then, like
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: when they took Leedstow and they got Parsels in, there
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: was like there was hope, like the first time in
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: my Patriots fandom. And before that Super Bowl and Tuesday
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: before Super Bowl thirty six, I was actually pissed off
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: when they named Tom Brady the starter and I wasn't
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: really a believer in the guy until that final drive.
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: And after that, I was like, well, crap, they can't
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: I know they yes, Um, I know they just signed
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: Drew to this big contract, but we can't give up
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: on this. We can't like get rid of the Super
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Bowl MBT. But I mean, it's just been a it
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: was a pleasure watching what the guy did, even in Tampa,
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: Like not that like I was rooting for him in Tampa,
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: but just just to see him transform that team, to
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: transform this team. Um, all the fun, all the memories,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: it was just great. Um. And that's all I got
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: to say about that. And my question is, I don't
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: know if you guys noticed, and I apologize if he
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: already brought this stuff, but losing Ziegler and McDaniels, do
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: you know if we if we're going to get compensatory
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: picks for that or is that just strictly for players
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: not coaches? No, yeah, they have I mean in order
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: to be eligible for that, it has to be minority coaches, correct,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: unless a guy is like under contract and going to
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: the same job, so now you're trading him. Yeah. You know,
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: like if if Belichick would decide, like I'm going to
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: go coach the Giants, like the Patriots would be doing
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: for the effort, right, So so I think the answer
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: is no, the Patriots won't be getting anything for Ziegler,
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: not for Ziegler or McDonald and I don't think generally
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: they're getting any any compics, right did last year? Well
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: that's that's out right. Hasn't that already been determined what
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: teams are getting what? Or is that not? I think
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: that's been speculated. The league hasn't put anything definitive out Yeah,
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: all right, Patty, all right, guys, thanks for the call.
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: Uh go back to back calls here, Melvin's in Tennessee.
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: What's up, Y'all's going on? You? Baby? Hey? I get
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: um simple question. Who are the best three rd receiver
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: chords in the NFL? Do you think right now? You
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: got to Dallas? You got you know, I would certainly
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: put Cincinnati in that mix. I would put the Rams
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: in that mix. Ye, the Bills, the Bills in that mix. Uh,
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: you're you're right about Dallas, Melvin. If Dallas, what about
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: books where when healthy? The Bucks would be in that mix? Yeah,
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: m hm. My point of it was I thought that
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: Dallas probably had the best to start the season. I
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: feel like that's trending a little bit. Of course, the
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: Rams look pretty good, but I don't know, it's hard
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: to tell because if if the Bengals do keep their
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: little guys, I get they got a one, two three
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: punch that can hurt you too, because like when I
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: was them playing a well bit, you know, you know,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: any one of them can get the ball, and anyone
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: any one of them could be kind of dangerous. So
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: I don't know. It's just an interesting thing to see
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: all those cores and how that transitioning and feels like
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: all the teams that's left right now, and even the
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: last two years, I'll have pretty strong receivers cores. So
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: we're far from that. But whatever it is, what it is.
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: So but it was just interesting to point out and
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: see what child about that the best three we were. Yeah,
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: I mean, I think what stood out to me too
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: in this in this playoff is just that you need
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: two guys. Thanks, I need at least two guys. But
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: you need two guys. You need one dynamic receiver who
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: you know, is a problem that you can move around,
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: and you need somebody who can kind of control the
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: middle of the field, whether it's a slot receiver, whether
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: it's a tight end. But I think you're you're kind
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: of dead in the water as an offense if you
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: don't have those two pieces. And I think that's why
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: at least two you talk about, you know what the
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: Patriots need this year, and if you get that kind
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: of interior, your explosive guy, I think he makes everybody better.
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: And I think Hunter Henry gets better, and I think
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: Nelson Agilore, you know, has a little bit less attention
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: on the back end. Um. So you know, I don't
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: think they're that far away, but I definitely think they
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: need a guy because I like the tight ends. I
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: like the tight ends. I think with the right pieces,
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: the tight ends are fine and you can win with them.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: And you've got complimentary pieces too, like Born and Agilore
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: and Myers that I think they would all be better
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: too if you just had that one dynamic receiver piece
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: that you could move around split matchups. I just, you know,
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: I don't think it can be a strictly perimeter guy.
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: It needs to be a matchup piece, and just that
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: that's what sticks out to me every one of these
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: games you watch, whether it's Stefan Diggs, Tyreek Hill, every team,
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: Jamar Chase, every team has at least one of those guys,
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: Cooper Cup. You just I think that's where the league
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: is headed. And you just you need to be able
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: to have that element to challenge defenses. And I think
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: defense is tea off on on this Patriots offense with
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: what they have, because they don't have it all right.

- 1:42:28Speaker 1: So I don't know that his grandfather used to fish
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: with They all used Shakespeare rods, yeah, Ted Williams. So
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: my grandfather was a longtime track coach at tufts Um

- 1:42:40Speaker 1: in the early seventies, and he developed a friendship with
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: Ted Williams. There's, um, there's some interesting newspaper articles that
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: I've dug up that it's my grandfather. I never met him.
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: He died before I was born, Clarence Dinghu, So the

- 1:42:56Speaker 1: to New Brunswick where my grandfather did all the summers,
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: and um, they would fish together, fly fishing. And this
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: is a crazy story. Um, John Henry Douso Williams they
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: named his middle name is after my grandfather. You go
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: to newspapers dot com. You can do a lot of searching.
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: I found one that's like, you know, Doso teaches the
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: Red Sox how to run. So my grandfather went down
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: to Florida and was talking to them about like speed
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: and stuff. So, um, yeah, it's it's he's he's got
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: a he's got a whole story. I've got his whole
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: all this sty I gotta feel there's a lot of
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: stories at deuces and telling us. I'm getting through them,
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: slowly but surely. But that's one of the better ones. Yeah,
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: the moral of those stories, you're kind of a disappointment
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: in the family. That's another great moment from you want
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: to talk about great moments? Yes, where were you twenty
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: years ago today? I already know the answer to this.
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: I was talked about. But I was in Hollywood. I
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: was in Uh. I was in Lovis to Terrace, my
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: friend's apartment with a couple of Rams fans at Monica.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: How did dub that's Hollywood, right, Hollywood, Franklin, Franklin and
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: uh and Lebrea. I think about where it was. Um,
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: But yeah, drew bletso Jersey on ready for the for
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: the Patriots probably to lose the Super Bowl to the Rams.
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: Didn't really anticipate that they would win it. I know
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: where Paul was getting a hurricane dumped on him, and
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: the auxiliary press box was there at the Superdome. Yeah,
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: twenty years ago today, the Patriots splashed on me twenty
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: to seventeen win over the then Saint Louis Rams to
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: win the first of what would become six Vince Lombardi Trophies.
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: Did you give it like an O? Come on? Like?
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: Did you turn around? And I was jumping up? I
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: told you. I lost. I lost my professionalism. It's probably
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: for the first and only time you're jumping up and
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: down with the legs, like kicking up and like like
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: that playoff run was as emotional as I've been. Like
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: when Drew had to go win against Pittsburgh, you were
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: a nervous red and then that game, as you know,
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: that was it like the tobucky uh yeah, fumble returned,
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: it was gonna make it twenty four. The game was over.
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: I did, and I realized, oh, I can't do Did
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: you even care about the Super Bowl? After Drew had
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: that kind of like final game. I wanted. I wanted
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: to win the Super Bowl like the nice he had
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: never won before right now, like I always say that,
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: like there's nothing like the first one. Yeah, yeah, that
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: was one of my Yeah. We released Eric and I
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: did a seventh episode of two thousand and one Who
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: Bowls Sound Odyssey UM which dropped today dropped today, So
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: check out all seven episodes. But but I think, yeah,
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: Paul's Paul's Story, which wraps up episode five, which is
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: the Steelers, was you know, just one of my one
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: of my favorites because it was about you know, personal stories,
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: personal perspectives and like stories. It wasn't uh. I mean,
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: everybody loves Tom Brady and stuff, but I thought it
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: was great to hear, you know, a Bloedsow fan who
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: you know represented and I think who the caller was
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: that just mentioned it when Bledsoe came going from like
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: ninety one ninety two yeah, two, yeah. I just think
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: that drew Bled So it was just monumental than right.
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: I don't think we needed to tank at that point,
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: just weren't good. I witnessed some of the tanking first hand,
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: and it was pretty pretty tanking in those middle benches.
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: But uh, but yeah, what a a remarkable season. Just
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: Robert so hard to replace. I mean that's what we
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: talked about in the final episode of just There's just
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: so much that happened this season. It'll never that'll never
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: be replicated. Yeah, the Super Bowls had as many dramatic
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: twists and turns and unexpected things happen as the two
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: thousand and one season. It's just if you haven't yet

- 1:46:24Speaker 1: By the way, I'm not for two and one. The
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: Super bowls. I know the English language and I use it. Well,
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: uh if you yeah, I do, thank you, thank you
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: very much. If wherever you get your podcasts, right yeah,
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: it's available off and you get you get a special
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: bonus seventh episode altogether up right on today being the
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: twentieth anniversary of that dramatic win, that that is as
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: excited as I have ever been for a Patriots win
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: in my lifetime. Yeah. Well, and Eric sharing the story
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: is a young kicker imagining himself kicking the game when
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: he will go for the Patriots and then being simultaneous
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: got to do it, sorry, jealous and overjoyed that it
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: came down to that, and wishing I was an adamentary
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: that you would have been so mad for life at
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: him of just like you had the chance right there,
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: should have been knew it. I would have made it.
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: Maybe not the snow one, but but yeah, it's hard
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: to believe twenty years ago today like that, that all
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: that's happened over those two decades. And that's what's hard
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: to think, is like imagining where I was as a
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: person to that when Tom Brady and all that started
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: and just you know, kids, marriage, all these things that jobs,
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: fired over the last twenty years. It's just it's really
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: been the thing that's carried us from that time to now. Yeah.
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: Uh so, it was a lot of fun doing that
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: last episode with you, dude, and it's a different kind
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: of format than the other six. Yeah, you know, we're
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: just chatting about it and casual. Keep some of the
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: sounds dominated, dominated, crushed it, He crushed it. We did,
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: we did all right, Dominated dominated the discussion. That's good, Joyce.
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: Let me give it to my point. Shut out my
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: show about Rhode Island on a stormy evening in the
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: seventies on a hill when the Sclavino klan. Well we're
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: a little loquacious. What can you say? Podcast is good,
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: but yeah, it's a great way to celebrate the anniversary.
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: Do yourself a favor and download that and listen if
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: you haven't already. And just the start of many, many,
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: many anniversary celebrations that we're gonna do over the next
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: ten years here. Yeah, hopefully, But I'm I'm excited to
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: see where where this team goes from now, because it
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: does feel like, after you know, Brady left, you had
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: the the one year of Cam Newton and you bring
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: Mac in and then you have the game against Brady
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: and it sort of felt like that that that's like
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: a clear yeah, line of demarcation between the Brady era
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: and the new era, and now here we are into
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: in the next next chapter to say that it's pretty
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: cool of like everywhere that Tom Brady could have gone
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: and spent last two seasons like he did, end up
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: somewhere yea, that he got to come back here and
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: play right, which you know was was was cool and
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: closer than expected. Well Al from Venice, Florida, not Italy,
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: uh says, I feel like I have bookended Tom Brady's career.
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: I was at the game when he took his first
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: NFL snaps relieving the injured Drew Bleeds against the Jets,
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: and I was at his final NFL snaps for the
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: Buccaneers against the ROMs a few sundays ago. Wool just curious,
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: just curious if there are any other PU listeners or
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: anyone else out there that can say the same, that's
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: that's pretty unique. I doubt that there are that. I'm
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: gonna go on the limb say nobody sixty five plus
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: thousand people possibilities, right, I'm gonna say he's the only
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: one that was at the first and the first end
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: the last for Brady, I've got to be specific that
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: it's the Jets game now, right, Yeah, Like he did
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: get into a game, the Jets game, the Jets game.
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: He's talking about the Jets game specifically, and that to
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: me is what separates it because I think there's a
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: there's a chance that you had a decent percentage of
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: Patriots fans that were at the Bucks Rams game that
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: just either they're down in Florida Snowbirds. I know of
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: a couple of people who actually have have bought Buck
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: season tickets season tickets, Um, Jim Murray talks about his
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: buddy all the time who has Buck season tickets. I
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: think there's a there's there's a chance that you had
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: like even as many as like five hundred specific Patriot
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: fans that were there. This could be Brady's last game.
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: I'm going to be there, but to have been there
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: for the for the first one of the first one,
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: the mo Lewis game, right yeah, and he did, You're right, dude.
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: His first snaps, I believe in the NFL were against
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: Thanksgiving in mop up duty. Um. But everybody really thinks
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: of his career. We got home from that trip and
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: we just to fly into Logan at the time, and
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: it was Thanksgiving obviously, so I won't you know, we
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: didn't do the overnight for the for the paper. You know,
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: go home and if you can, you know, if you
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: have salvage a little of Thanksgiving. So it was still reasonable. Yeah,
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: it was reasonably early. And I remember my dad came
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: and picked me up at Logan so I could get
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: home faster. I don't have to worry about going back
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: to Foxborough. Um. So he comes and picks me up
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: and Drew is out on a bench who looked like
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: he was waiting for a ride too. I don't think you.
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: I opened the door to go see my well, you know,
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: figure out where my father is, and he's talking to
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: Drew seriously telling him. He's basically like I don't know
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: exactly what he was saying, but he's basically telling him
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: keep your head up, still, keep your head up. Oh man,
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: I don't know your dad, but my dad talking to
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: Drew Biletto like that would be nightmare fuel because I
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: could only imagine the into conversations. But you know that
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: he was like, this is the last place in the world.
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: I want to be right now talking to this day.
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: And I remember, I remember I mentioned it to Drew
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: like the next week that was your dad, can you
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: can you do me a favorite? Can you thank him
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: for me? That was really nice. I was like, you
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: don't have to say stuff like that. I already told
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: him never to do that. I love you, Drew, mean it? Uh.
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: Cody in Indiana before we go back to the Ah
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: take a Hotline has an interesting email. He wrote in
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: earlier in the show, but replied to his own email because,
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: as he put it, FYI I sent an email to
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: the web radio email address which I see under here
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: and got Fred's out of office email reply. Just FYI.
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: No clue if everyone else who emailed got it, but
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: I figured I should make you guys aware of it. Lol.
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: And yes it's right there. It's Fred's. It's just out
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: of curiosity to say he'll be back February eighth. February eighth, yeah,
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: four or five. It's only next week Tuesday, but it's
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: like Tuesday. Yeah, he's gonna be gone for a while
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: a little bit. Yeah, he's decompressing next Tuesday. I'm glad
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: that some of us that's what it should have said
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: in the out of email some of us can clear
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: our heads, I guess. But his email was, Hey, guys,
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: uh was Bill O'Brien the offensive coordinator right around the
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: time they had the two tight end emphasis? Yes, I
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: know Henry is not wrong. John was certainly not Hernandez.
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: But do you think we could see more of that
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: if O'Brien comes back. That's that's a good question. And
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: I mean I think that we, as we've discussed, I
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: think a lot of people, us included, overestimated, myself included,
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: overestimated the amount they were gonna run two tight ends
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: and forever whatever reason, they didn't. Another interesting point though,
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: I think that's come out about that season though, was, um,
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: you know, it was a lockout and Belichick wanted to
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: go fast and that was It wasn't so much. I mean,
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: it was the two tight ends, but it was also
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: the one word play calls that was part of it too,
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: and the speed that they went a lot, yeah, directly
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: kind of related to that season and just the lack
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: of preparation teams would have trying to turn the screws
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: on them and you know, a challenge their conditioning a
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: little bit. So I don't. I don't know that was
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: special circumstances going into that. I don't know how it
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: translates now if he's going to look at or if
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: he would theoretically look at these tight ends and say, oh,
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: you know, I think we can we can reproduce something similar.
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: But I think, based on what we saw, neither one
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: of those guys is the dynamic open field threat that
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: Aaron hern Well. I mean there's a couple of things.
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: Number One, I would say, without question, the guy who
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: was the object of every fan's ire this year was
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: Jona Smith. Yeah, and yet it seems like we're looking
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: for more opportunities to get him on the field more,
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: you know, because two tight ends automatically means you're gonna
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: have a good offense. I guess. So. I think Mike
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: just hit that perfectly. If your personnel dictates that you
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: do something, that's why you do it. Not because I
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: want to do this formation because that allows me to
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: be successful. It's only successful if the guys are good,
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: and I think that it will wait and see what
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: happens with Jona Smith. The other thing that that do
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: mentioned this is going to come off as like I'm
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: being sarcastic, and it's completely the opposite. We credit Belichick
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: with so many things that are just like routine that
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: he didn't really innovate in joint practices. Oh, oh my god,
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: I could give you a laundry list of snark deferring.
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: I could give you a laundry list of snark. The
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: forward pass. That's what what Mike just said about coming
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: off the lockout in twenty eleven is one of many
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: reasons why Bill is the greatest coach who's ever done it,
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: because I don't think everybody looked at it that way,
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: like preparation time is short. We have a veteran group
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: here with Tom Brady. We're gonna go ultra fast, one
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: word play calls, We're gonna we're gonna put all kinds
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: of pressure. That team wasn't that good, That twenty eleven team,
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: you remember it had a riff defense defense. He knew
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: he was gonna have to score a lot of points.
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: He knew where the strength was with Brady, the tight ends,
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: And that was another another advance cards, Like I don't
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: think just anybody does that says, oh, no preparation, how
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: can we exploit that? Oh this is this is a
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: way we could exploit that, like instead of giving him
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: credit for you know, playing eleven guys on defense, which
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: he seems like he gets credit for, like, you know, innovating,
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: you know, find the real stuff. I know, we're going
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: to make it interesting. Like that's a thing that I
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: don't think just anybody does. Yeah, yeah, it's interesting, but
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: I yeah, and but it's how, you know, how does
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: it relate to two tight ends? What they're going to
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: do now with Billy? Oh, I don't. I don't know.
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: I don't know, But I'm not saying he's the only
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: one that does these things. I wouldn't expect it to
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: suddenly bells here we go. I don't think that Kevin
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: and Dublin wanted to know. On this same topic, if
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: we saw any differences, real differences between McDaniels and O'Brien
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: in terms of play calling style throughout the year, I
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: don't remember. But I also don't it's hard. I don't
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: think so. I think the offense is the offense. I
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: think people that think it's a great thing that Josh
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: left because it's going to be different, they're gonna be
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: disappointed because I think the system is going to be
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: the same, which makes sense. I mean think you want
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: to do you want to try to I mean I
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: don't especially in the crucial year two development with the
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: young quarterback, and do you don't want to make him
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: learn something completely different? You know? And like the bigger
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: like the bigger picture question for me is, you know,
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: is how does Bill want to plot out the end
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: for him? Like what kind of coaches does you would
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: guess that whoever he's bringing it off his owner, Bills Bills, Yeah,
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: Like how does he want to manage the team during
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: this period in terms of how much he's involved on
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: either side of the ball. Does he want to bring
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: in an experienced coach who can kind of take one
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: side of the ball over and be separate and take
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: things off of his plate or does he want to
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: continue to do what he's been doing and develop young coaches,
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: put young coaches into that and bring in more young
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: coaches to fill them and you know, maybe them when
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: Bill does decide to hang them up. You've got offensive coordinator,
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: defensive coat, coaching staff that's been rebuilt, that has experienced,
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: but now can kind of care on his message Because
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: I mean, I think I said it on Tuesday, I
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: felt like after Josh and Ziegler left, it's like Bill
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: Belichick stands alone right now, Like it just feels like
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: it's kind of him here, and we know time is
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: winding down, and I truly believe he wants to leave
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: this franchise in a good position when he does leave.
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: So I think you're going to start to see some
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: of the plan a little bit as he starts to
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: make these hires now of what kind of coaches he
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: brings in Sean and Vancouver on the Ace ticket hot line,
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: close us out today, Erica a few things. So in
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: terms of the Rooney rule, it doesn't really work, and
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: we know everyone said that because of just rubber stamping
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: when you have requirements for the actual interview. But I
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: think it would work if you had a reward for
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: hiring that that might be something like I have the
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: same situation for my work, and yeah, you could say,
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: you know I'm going to spend one so get ready
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: all up. But when I auditioned, um, the union has
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: a requirement here that you have to see so many
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: local actors and remember that when when a production, you know,
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: like I auditioned for a couple of years ago for
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: a big our drama and they were going with Richard Kine.
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: That's who they cast, you know, dj uh uh and CBS,
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: and that they're not thinking like, oh, we're gonna go
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: Sean board off over Richard Kine. They're just like, Okay,
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: we're gonna have to bring in some some local actors.
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: So that bring me in and other actors to audition
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: a lot. It doesn't. It's just just let's sean. I've
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: been on the other side of that as a producer
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: and having to go to Vancouver site exactly what you're
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: talking about, like, yeah, yeah, you know the same thing.
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: We got it, we got align some locals up to yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: And and then the other thing I wanted to mention
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: is on a positive note in terms of the Pro
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: Pro Bowl for for Mac getting selected as an alternative
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: a replacement. Um, it's it's really good new from is
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: the way I look at it, because it means that
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: he's the sixth best quarterback in terms of Pro Bowl voters,
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: right because they didn't select car but they they selected Jones.
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: So for some reason they they think he's better than
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: Derek Carr. So that's that's kind of take your word
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: for it. I don't know if they don't know, and
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: he declined, I don't know a lot of the people.
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: A lot of people declined I don't know. What I
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: discovered is they don't really tell you. They don't really
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: tell you who you don't know. That's one point. I
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: wouldn't read anything into it. But you know from injuries, right,
- 2:00:33Speaker 1: because you know Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson are injured,
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: so they're they're not there some of them. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson, I mean Patrick, just a million guys, right,
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: And Josh Allen did like say, I'm not playing. I
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: declined to play, so yeah, he's about yeah right sure. Um,
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: And the last last thing I want to talk about
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: is that. But the point, Sean real quick is you know,
- 2:00:54Speaker 1: the guys that made it, that said no, you don't
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: know after that, if you if they didn't make it,
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: if they said no and they just went down the list,
- 2:01:02Speaker 1: they only announced who accepted. Okay, they don't. So if
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: you say no to an alternate, you don't have to
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: say why that's okay, thanks. Josh Allen said no, well,
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: yeah he didn't make Yeah he was an alternate. Josh
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: was an alternate and he said no, yeah, right, But
- 2:01:17Speaker 1: I mean, if you're going down the list after that,
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: it doesn't have to report it, I imagine. I guess then, right,
- 2:01:23Speaker 1: what I'm saying is if someone and I don't know
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: this to be the like, for all I know, Mac
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: was the sixth alternate, I don't know, well, like in
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: this case, the third alternate, the sixth one in the AFC, right,
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: that could be the way they do it. I don't know.
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: I don't think they picked that many alternates. I think
- 2:01:39Speaker 1: there's like I think there's like an alternate and then
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: after that they like then they just start calling you
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: want to go like Joe Burrow, Like, don't tell me
- 2:01:46Speaker 1: Joe Burrow wasn't ahead of him right now obviously he
- 2:01:48Speaker 1: can't play because he's in the super Bowl. Yeah, but
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: I mean, I you know, Herbert, you know, is he there?
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: Did he make it? Yeah? Yeah, okay, so he ended
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: up going yeah he's yeah, he is there. So I mean,
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: I think I think there's a lot of guys right
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: that would I mean, certainly Derek Carr would have been
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: over and if you ask me, but I don't, like,
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: I don't know that. Yeah. Yeah. So the other thing
- 2:02:12Speaker 1: about teams, we're talking about Washington and team names. Yeah,
- 2:02:18Speaker 1: the Commander brought up a couple of like of names
- 2:02:20Speaker 1: in in uh basketball. But you know a lot of
- 2:02:23Speaker 1: teams they have the name from where they move, like
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: the Lakers, yea, Minnesota, the Jazz, Grizzlies here in Grizzlies.
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: But what I thought was kind of funny, is we
- 2:02:33Speaker 1: go back to the original question. Uh, the Redskins were
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: originally from Boston. It's true? Correct, Yeah, that's right, Yeah,
- 2:02:42Speaker 1: all right, that's all right, A huge a huge Indian area, right,
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: thanks Sean. I believe they would, wasn't it the Algonquins?
- 2:02:50Speaker 1: Am I wrong on that? Am I? Not the team name? Like?
- 2:02:53Speaker 1: I think that was what they were honoring, like the
- 2:02:55Speaker 1: heritage of the I don't. I don't remember, don't don't.
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: I might be remember that, but you might be right.
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: I don't know, but I do remember obviously, like an
- 2:03:03Speaker 1: enormous Indian heritage, Native Americans. Well, also the Atlanta heritage,
- 2:03:07Speaker 1: Atlanta Braves, worthy, Boston Braves, right, and they played at
