- 0:00Speaker 1: It's not like, you know, we were one hundred win
- 0:01Speaker 1: team and you're seeing names thrown out there. It's like,
- 0:03Speaker 1: look like we ran a pretty similar team out there
- 0:06Speaker 1: back to back years and we didn't make the playoffs.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Welcome into Northside Territory. Foul Territory Networks Cubs Podcast. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 2: Sahadev Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. Patrick and I
- 0:21Speaker 2: cover the Cubs for the Athletic and Patrick, we have
- 0:26Speaker 2: an exciting week coming up. I say that because it
- 0:30Speaker 2: does feel like the Winter Meetings this year will will
- 0:34Speaker 2: be a little bit more exciting. I mean just in
- 0:37Speaker 2: general in terms of rumors, in terms of action as well.
- 0:42Speaker 2: We've had some past but this year seems like we
- 0:46Speaker 2: may actually see some movement with the Cubs involved.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I think exciting is relative because a lot of
- 0:57Speaker 3: the Winter Meetings and us just standing around a hotel lobby.
- 1:00Speaker 3: But you're right that there is, you know, this Juan
- 1:03Speaker 3: Soto and the domino effect that he will have which
- 1:06Speaker 3: will include the Cubs, and we'll get into that of
- 1:08Speaker 3: maybe where Cody Bellinger lands as a Plan B for someone.
- 1:13Speaker 3: But the Cubs have already started making moves, which is
- 1:17Speaker 3: a good sign. They do have a little bit of
- 1:19Speaker 3: money to spend. They have trade ships at the major
- 1:23Speaker 3: and minor league levels, and oh, it seems like teams
- 1:28Speaker 3: have an appetite to spend this winter, just generally across
- 1:32Speaker 3: the baseball industry, when you'll get some of these starting
- 1:35Speaker 3: pitching deals, which we will obviously get into in more
- 1:38Speaker 3: depth here shortly, But those are good signs for an
- 1:42Speaker 3: interesting winter meetings in Dallas.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it's always I just remember one of my first
- 1:50Speaker 2: winter meetings. It was just really hectic, and it continued
- 1:55Speaker 2: to be hectic that for a few years after that.
- 1:58Speaker 2: But then suddenly it was like no action during the
- 2:01Speaker 2: winter meetings and and that's like, that's bad for the fans.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I think it's bad for the games. Uh, well, we'll
- 2:07Speaker 2: get we'll get back to that in a moment. We
- 2:09Speaker 2: got we have a guest today. Uh, let's let's bring
- 2:12Speaker 2: in our guest. It's a Jamison Tywn from the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Obviously one of the better interviews in the game, one
- 2:19Speaker 2: of the more fun guys that I've covered.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Very honest, let's bring him in.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Jamison, thanks so much for joining us, man, Thanks for
- 2:28Speaker 2: coming on.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Yeah, good morning, gotta do the off season in the
- 2:33Speaker 1: car interview.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Isn't that whatever does important stuff? You nailed it by man.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I'm at the Cubs complex. I could walk inside, but
- 2:46Speaker 1: I gotta look important in the cars.
- 2:48Speaker 2: So all right, Jamison, let's get right to it.
- 2:52Speaker 4: Uh.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Cubs more active than last winter, at least to this point.
- 2:59Speaker 4: Uh.
- 2:59Speaker 2: One of the bigger signing so far, Matthew Boyd. But
- 3:02Speaker 2: what's your reaction to that? What do you know about Boyd?
- 3:05Speaker 2: And like, do you like, what do you recall of
- 3:08Speaker 2: his season this year?
- 3:10Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 3:10Speaker 1: So I actually reached out to him when we signed him,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and he told me that we played together at like
- 3:16Speaker 1: a USA trial back in like two thousand and nine.
- 3:20Speaker 1: So I do I remember that he was like I
- 3:23Speaker 1: think a college guy already or something.
- 3:24Speaker 4: I don't remember what, but I remember he was a stud.
- 3:27Speaker 4: But I remember him.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Thrown against US in Cleveland last year, and I've seen
- 3:31Speaker 1: him over the years. I've always thought he had a
- 3:33Speaker 1: really sneaky fastball and he just mixes the off speed
- 3:37Speaker 1: like you know, before the whole throw your best pitch
- 3:39Speaker 1: more movement. I've always thought he was a guy that
- 3:41Speaker 1: like just constantly was mixing, rarely gets beat on the fastball,
- 3:46Speaker 1: and when he does throw it, I feel like he
- 3:48Speaker 1: just sneaks it by guys. So yeah, I think, you know,
- 3:52Speaker 1: I see what we're what we're going for.
- 3:54Speaker 4: I think there's.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Upside there, and if he's healthy, he's worth way more
- 3:57Speaker 1: than you know, what he got. Obviously, any signing as
- 4:01Speaker 1: a risk on.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Kind of you know, any pitcher.
- 4:05Speaker 1: But I think he's you know, a safe bet to
- 4:08Speaker 1: be worth that and be a really nice addition.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Jameson, you pay attention to the market and the industry
- 4:14Speaker 3: at large. What do you think is driving this push
- 4:18Speaker 3: for starting pitching, not just Boyd but Kakuuchi, Sevarino to
- 4:22Speaker 3: the A's. There's been a lot of these deals well
- 4:25Speaker 3: in advance of the winter meetings.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting because when I was a free agent,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I remember, you know, and I didn't sign later or anything,
- 4:32Speaker 1: but I remember it was kind of like sit around
- 4:35Speaker 1: and wait for the top guys to go, and then
- 4:38Speaker 1: like even teams would kind of just tell us like, hey,
- 4:40Speaker 1: we're kind of waiting to see what de Gram does,
- 4:43Speaker 1: or we're kind of trying to feel out road on
- 4:45Speaker 1: in my year, and then we'll shift our focus.
- 4:50Speaker 4: I think this year, I think you know, there's a
- 4:51Speaker 4: lot of.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Really good, just like quality starters available, and I think
- 4:55Speaker 1: teams don't want to risk missing out on those guys,
- 4:58Speaker 1: you know, while they're waiting for, like the Corbyn Burns
- 5:00Speaker 1: or Max Freeze.
- 5:02Speaker 4: You know they're worth waiting for.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But you know, I just think a guy like Kakuchi
- 5:06Speaker 1: or you know, Severino and stuff, you don't want to
- 5:09Speaker 1: miss out on that guy.
- 5:10Speaker 4: If you're playing in that middle tier.
- 5:13Speaker 2: You've always had your pulse on on free agency. I
- 5:17Speaker 2: know you communicate with a lot of other guys around the.
- 5:20Speaker 4: League, and when you.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Were recruited by the Cubs, I think Craig Breslo was
- 5:24Speaker 2: a big part of that pitch. So I'm not sure
- 5:27Speaker 2: how much it's evolved since Breslow left organization. But what's
- 5:30Speaker 2: your understanding about what was your experience about being recruited
- 5:35Speaker 2: by the Cubs and and kind of what's your understanding
- 5:37Speaker 2: of how they go about recruiting pitchers in particular.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yeah, So a big thing for me in free agency
- 5:45Speaker 1: was like, and I still feel this way, like maybe
- 5:47Speaker 1: it's just something I have mentally wrong with me, but
- 5:51Speaker 1: I always think there's another gear that I can reach.
- 5:54Speaker 1: So I'm constantly chasing like more and I am very curious.
- 5:59Speaker 4: And when I met with the US, it's just.
- 6:01Speaker 1: A line where like Breslo sat down and was like, look,
- 6:04Speaker 1: we know you're a good pitcher, that's why we're here,
- 6:06Speaker 1: but like we think you can reach these levels, and
- 6:10Speaker 1: he presented like some biomechanics stuff, some pitch usage stuff.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Obviously I didn't have a great first year, but I
- 6:17Speaker 1: just thought that was super interesting that he wasn't afraid
- 6:19Speaker 1: to like sit down and challenge me a little bit.
- 6:22Speaker 1: That kind of attracted me to be completely honest. And
- 6:26Speaker 1: then you know, like obviously money talks in those situations,
- 6:30Speaker 1: and what city you're going to play for, like everything
- 6:33Speaker 1: plays into it. I honestly didn't talk to too many players,
- 6:39Speaker 1: and as you guys know, like teams nowadays like keep
- 6:41Speaker 1: everything pretty quiet.
- 6:43Speaker 4: I feel like there's.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Not a ton of leaks unless they want leaks sort
- 6:45Speaker 1: of thing. So yeah, I didn't like go out of
- 6:50Speaker 1: my way to to talk to a bunch of guys
- 6:51Speaker 1: around the league and ask questions and stuff. I did
- 6:54Speaker 1: talk to Rizzo a little bit, and I messaged with
- 6:56Speaker 1: Scotti f Ross a little bit about his experience with
- 6:59Speaker 1: the Cubs.
- 6:59Speaker 4: And Tommy and all that.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Something I thought the Cubs did pretty well and that
- 7:04Speaker 1: I thought was interesting was that free agent video they
- 7:06Speaker 1: send out, Like it's very common for teams to reach
- 7:09Speaker 1: out on the first day and be like, hey, we've
- 7:11Speaker 1: got interest.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Well, the Cubs were like, hey, we've got interest, and.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Here's some videos to see what you're you know, a
- 7:16Speaker 1: day in the life of being a Cub would look like,
- 7:18Speaker 1: and all that sort of stuff.
- 7:21Speaker 3: I think Boyd got one of those videos. I'm sure
- 7:23Speaker 3: they must have refreshed it and put an updated spin
- 7:28Speaker 3: on it. But you mentioned Tommy Hatavey as a pitching coach.
- 7:31Speaker 3: The Cubs recently hired Tyler Zombro. When we talk about
- 7:36Speaker 3: like a pitching infrastructure, could you explain it to fans
- 7:40Speaker 3: of like what that is, because I think it's gonna
- 7:42Speaker 3: come up if they get another starting pitcher. I think
- 7:45Speaker 3: Rogi Sazaki is a long shot, but like they'll want
- 7:48Speaker 3: to make their pitch and say how we can help
- 7:49Speaker 3: get you better, Like what is the pitching infrastructure for
- 7:53Speaker 3: the Cubs and what is unique about it compared to
- 7:55Speaker 3: the rest of the league.
- 7:56Speaker 1: So Tommy, to me has just got like that perfect
- 7:59Speaker 1: mix will start with Tommy, he played. I feel like
- 8:03Speaker 1: he always knew he was going to be a coach,
- 8:06Speaker 1: but he played and kind of played through that lens almost.
- 8:09Speaker 4: So if you just need someone to.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Sit with and literally just have a therapist, Tommy's the best.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Tommy also like speaks.
- 8:17Speaker 1: The language of being, you know, an analytics guy and
- 8:20Speaker 1: someone who's helped build up IVY. He knows how to
- 8:23Speaker 1: prepare scouting information, like you know, this year I went
- 8:27Speaker 1: to Tommy and I was like, look, dude, like IVY
- 8:28Speaker 1: can be overwhelming, here's the information I like to see.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Can you help me?
- 8:32Speaker 1: And like, you know, before every start, I had a
- 8:34Speaker 1: whole print out of all the information I like, Tommy
- 8:36Speaker 1: would go through it write some of his notes, so like,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you know, perfect mix of therapists, advanced scout people, manager
- 8:44Speaker 1: like just being able to communicate with so many different personalities,
- 8:47Speaker 1: which I think Tommy does better than anyone. Is like
- 8:50Speaker 1: just meeting you where you are, not making you meet
- 8:53Speaker 1: him where he is, if that makes sense, Like he's
- 8:55Speaker 1: willing to adjust his style for me versus Hendrix versus
- 8:59Speaker 1: Showda versus, like really good at knowing what you need.
- 9:03Speaker 1: And then Zambro like from what I've heard and I
- 9:06Speaker 1: know people that I've worked with him directly at tread
- 9:08Speaker 1: like just super super sharp guy and another guy that's
- 9:10Speaker 1: played And then I'm pretty excited about Casey Jacobson too,
- 9:16Speaker 1: like just adding another another dude who's familiar with a
- 9:18Speaker 1: lot of our young guys, Like it's no secret we
- 9:21Speaker 1: have a good farm system. Like, I think he's going
- 9:23Speaker 1: to help kind of that transition for guys to the
- 9:25Speaker 1: big leagues. And you know, you don't win unless you
- 9:28Speaker 1: have a bunch of good young guys too, So I
- 9:30Speaker 1: think he's going to be just an awesome addition.

- 10:36Speaker 2: So much of the talk during the season about Wrigley
- 10:39Speaker 2: Field was the wind blowing in and the offense being impacted.
- 10:45Speaker 2: We brought it up to JED this winter, but obviously
- 10:48Speaker 2: it helped the pitching too.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Right of both sides.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Right, This isn't This isn't excuse making or anything like that.
- 10:54Speaker 2: It's just the reality of the situation. What were your
- 10:58Speaker 2: thoughts on You had big home road splits, but I've
- 11:01Speaker 2: noticed that's kind of been your career pattern. There were
- 11:04Speaker 2: some others that had big home road splits. Of the starters,
- 11:07Speaker 2: what were your thoughts on that? Was it a topic
- 11:09Speaker 2: of discussion among the pitchers and is it something that
- 11:12Speaker 2: you guys try to avoid letting get in your head
- 11:16Speaker 2: or is it just the reality of pitching a Wrigley
- 11:18Speaker 2: feel sometimes.
- 11:20Speaker 1: So it's funny because I didn't even really notice that
- 11:23Speaker 1: offense was being like suppressed at Wriggly that much until
- 11:26Speaker 1: kind of later in the year, and then it was like, oh, maybe.
- 11:29Speaker 4: We should pitch to this, like you see the flags
- 11:32Speaker 4: blown in.
- 11:32Speaker 1: But I also have a running joke with some of
- 11:35Speaker 1: the pictures, like it feels like almost every one of
- 11:37Speaker 1: my start days the wind blows out. So it's like
- 11:40Speaker 1: I'm one flyball guy on the staff, like me and Schota,
- 11:43Speaker 1: and it's like the wind blows out for me, but
- 11:45Speaker 1: blows in for sinker ball guys and stuff like that.
- 11:48Speaker 1: So I mean, I understand it and there's no doubt.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Like I remember a flyball O'Neal Cruise hit off me
- 11:54Speaker 1: into the warning track at like one twelve at thirty six,
- 11:57Speaker 1: and it's like that's a homer every you know, everywhere,
- 12:01Speaker 1: Like the wind one hundred percent added that down. Like
- 12:03Speaker 1: I'm aware of it, but you know, it also depends
- 12:07Speaker 1: on the day at Wrigley, Like you can't just say, oh,
- 12:10Speaker 1: it was down this season up last year. It's like
- 12:12Speaker 1: it depends on the day, it depends on the home stand.
- 12:16Speaker 1: So you'd have to go like way more in depth.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I feel like to really read into it too much.
- 12:21Speaker 1: But I remember, like my last start of the year
- 12:23Speaker 1: against the Reds, that hour forty five minute game or whatever,
- 12:26Speaker 1: like that was the day where I was like, my
- 12:28Speaker 1: body's tired, I don't really feel great. The wind's howling in,
- 12:31Speaker 1: Like I am gonna throw a ton of strikes today
- 12:34Speaker 1: and just see what happens. That was probably the one
- 12:38Speaker 1: day where I was like truly not afraid to throw
- 12:40Speaker 1: it over the plate and like just go ahead.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Cody Bellinger certainly noticed the wind and the weather at
- 12:49Speaker 3: Wrigley Field this past season. You were both part of
- 12:54Speaker 3: the same like free agent class coming to Chicago at
- 12:56Speaker 3: kind of this particular moment in time. What was your
- 13:00Speaker 3: actually to see like his name back out there in
- 13:03Speaker 3: trade rumors. It seems like it's been this entire saga
- 13:08Speaker 3: with Cody of like will they trade him or not
- 13:10Speaker 3: at the deadline, will we opt in or not? What
- 13:12Speaker 3: does he meant to this team? And what were you
- 13:14Speaker 3: surprised to like see his name resurface again after opting hit.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Yeah, first, I mean, first off, from the offense standpoint,
- 13:20Speaker 1: I can remember so many fly balls that Patrick Wisdom
- 13:23Speaker 1: hit too that I was like, oh, off the bat,
- 13:25Speaker 1: that's gone, and then it's like warning tracks.
- 13:27Speaker 4: So yeah, and I remember Belly hitting some of those two.
- 13:30Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean, like I understand why names get
- 13:35Speaker 1: thrown out there, engaging interest and stuff. Like my thing
- 13:38Speaker 1: with Cody is that he's such a good all around player,
- 13:41Speaker 1: Like he does a lot of things really well and
- 13:43Speaker 1: obviously plays a lot of positions and in today's game,
- 13:47Speaker 1: like that's so valuable to play a good defense kind
- 13:50Speaker 1: of all over the field. And it's crazy to talk
- 13:54Speaker 1: about like a former MVP and stuff like this, but
- 13:56Speaker 1: like he's the ultimate insurance policy because he can play.
- 14:00Speaker 1: So it's like, you know, in the off season might
- 14:03Speaker 1: sound kind of like a good idea or whatever, salary wise,
- 14:05Speaker 1: but you know, you have a guy that can just
- 14:08Speaker 1: play all over the field. So you know, you just
- 14:10Speaker 1: hope you don't have an unfortunate situation in season where
- 14:13Speaker 1: you're like, man, we wish we had you know, Cody
- 14:15Speaker 1: out here being able to play all these positions. So
- 14:18Speaker 1: We'll see what happens. Cody's an awesome dude, awesome teammate.
- 14:23Speaker 1: He's a lot of fun to be around. I think
- 14:26Speaker 1: I said it last year, but he's way like, way
- 14:28Speaker 1: sharper and way more of like a baseball rat than
- 14:31Speaker 1: I would have imagined from the outside. Like this dude
- 14:34Speaker 1: is studious, like he's prepared, he's locked in, he is
- 14:38Speaker 1: not stoned on the bench like he is an ultimate pro,
- 14:42Speaker 1: like in the weight room every day. Great for young guys,
- 14:45Speaker 1: like truly just one of the most awesome dudes I've
- 14:47Speaker 1: ever played with.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Jamison one more before we let you go get a
- 14:52Speaker 2: workout in there. Obviously, Craig Council was very open and
- 14:57Speaker 2: honest with us. This organization needs to build ninety one
- 15:00Speaker 2: in teams. You were honest with us. UH needs to
- 15:03Speaker 2: be a better product on the field, more wins. We're
- 15:06Speaker 2: hearing a ton of rumors, right like we said, Bellinger,
- 15:09Speaker 2: Niko Horner's name has come up a lot. The Cubs are,
- 15:13Speaker 2: you know, rumors are swirling about Gary crochet I. Obviously
- 15:18Speaker 2: they're looking to improve. What are your expectations coming into
- 15:21Speaker 2: when you come to spring training? Pitchers and catchers report
- 15:25Speaker 2: what do you think this team will look.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Like, I have no idea. I have no idea. Honestly,
- 15:31Speaker 4: I don't know who to believe on the internet anymore.
- 15:33Speaker 7: I don't know, but only Yeah, that's another thing, like
- 15:39Speaker 7: you know when my name was thrown out there at
- 15:40Speaker 7: the deadline, or like when you see Cody's name out
- 15:42Speaker 7: there now, And I think I may have said this
- 15:44Speaker 7: around the deadline, but like we kind of in a
- 15:46Speaker 7: way did this to ourselves too.
- 15:47Speaker 1: It's not like, you know, we were a hundred win
- 15:50Speaker 1: team and you're seeing names thrown out there. It's like,
- 15:52Speaker 1: look like we ran a pretty similar team out there
- 15:54Speaker 1: back to back years and we didn't make the playoffs.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Like so you can't really sit here and be upset
- 15:59Speaker 1: when you see things because like, we need to get better,
- 16:03Speaker 1: and everything I see is like, you know, the front
- 16:05Speaker 1: office probably trying to be creative to make us the
- 16:07Speaker 1: best team possible, no matter what that looks like. So
- 16:11Speaker 1: you know, it's like the player side of me, who's
- 16:13Speaker 1: attached to everybody on the team, you don't want to
- 16:15Speaker 1: see anyone go.
- 16:16Speaker 4: And I know we're better than what we were last year.
- 16:17Speaker 1: But you also can't sit here and like pound the
- 16:20Speaker 1: table and not expect moves to be made, you know,
- 16:23Speaker 1: and just run it back. So yeah, I mean, I know,
- 16:28Speaker 1: our whole group said it all year last year, Like
- 16:29Speaker 1: I really do believe we are better than what we
- 16:31Speaker 1: showed and we were still you know, a fine major
- 16:34Speaker 1: league baseball team.
- 16:34Speaker 4: But like there's a lot of talent in the room.
- 16:37Speaker 1: We already have a pretty good core in place, like
- 16:39Speaker 1: always happy to you know, supplement it and add to it.
- 16:42Speaker 1: But it's going to be interesting, you know, I don't
- 16:46Speaker 1: know anything, so I'm excited to follow it and just
- 16:48Speaker 1: see what see what happens.
- 16:51Speaker 2: All right, James, So what do you what's the plan? Like,
- 16:53Speaker 2: where are you at and you're throwing progression? What are
- 16:56Speaker 2: you working on right now? Just curious?
- 16:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm down in Arizona.
- 17:02Speaker 1: I was in Chicago thrown into the net in the
- 17:04Speaker 1: cage for a while, but it's time to.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Get outside down here.
- 17:07Speaker 1: So gonna come in and throw at the facility with
- 17:10Speaker 1: Casey a few days a week, and then I'm lifting
- 17:12Speaker 1: at one of Kevin Poppy's facilities down here, who's now
- 17:16Speaker 1: our head strength coach. But I had organized that kind
- 17:19Speaker 1: of before that ever even happened. So just working out,
- 17:23Speaker 1: trying to get stronger throwing wise, Like there's some delivery
- 17:27Speaker 1: things that you know, my velocity dropped a little bit,
- 17:30Speaker 1: especially towards the end of the year. Like there's some
- 17:32Speaker 1: things that we flagged, some drills we're putting in with
- 17:36Speaker 1: like plyioballs, and just some things that got a little
- 17:39Speaker 1: out of whack. And lucky enough, I'm I've got a
- 17:42Speaker 1: big enough pitch mix and like, you know, I'm creative
- 17:45Speaker 1: enough with the different pitch micks and good control to
- 17:48Speaker 1: like get through it. But there were a lot of
- 17:50Speaker 1: games last year where I had really good games and
- 17:51Speaker 1: I was like, I still just don't quite feel you.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Know, like myself.
- 17:54Speaker 1: That's not like when I look back and see ninety ones.
- 17:57Speaker 1: It's like I've never thrown ninety one in my whole life.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Like I can get by with it. But so we're
- 18:02Speaker 1: trying to get creative and find ways to put me
- 18:04Speaker 1: in some athletic positions and get the arm move in
- 18:06Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 18:08Speaker 2: All right, Well, looking forward to digging into that, whether
- 18:11Speaker 2: it's a Cubs convention or spring training. We will see
- 18:14Speaker 2: you soon enough. Thanks so much for joining us. We
- 18:16Speaker 2: know you're busy, but always appreciate your time.
