- 0:30Speaker 2: Mark, that's so sweet. The best intro ever. And that
- 0:34Speaker 2: gentleman just said that you need more interesting guests, and
- 0:37Speaker 2: you have me. So there you go.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Yeah, don't listen to him. What does he know?
- 0:43Speaker 2: But wait, I was a politician. I ran for office
- 0:45Speaker 2: when I was 22 in New Orleans.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Oh, my God. luckily you didn't get elected because you
- 0:50Speaker 1: would have not had this great show business career that
- 0:53Speaker 1: you had.
- 0:54Speaker 2: No, but do you know, this is really, this is
- 0:56Speaker 2: how old I am, but I was the first woman
- 0:59Speaker 2: and the youngest person to ever run in the state
- 1:01Speaker 2: of Louisiana. And I don't know if you, do you
- 1:03Speaker 2: remember governor Edwin Edwards back in new Orleans?
- 1:06Speaker 1: Uh, name sounds familiar. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:09Speaker 2: He was literally like the father of the state. Cause
- 1:11Speaker 2: he like slept with every, every person that was long
- 1:14Speaker 2: before the me too.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Really? While he was in office.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, he was a silver fox, gorgeous. I mean,
- 1:22Speaker 2: he really was. And he was 42 when he was elected.
- 1:25Speaker 2: You have to look him up because he's legendary. He
- 1:27Speaker 2: went to jail, he had a reality show. But anyway,
- 1:30Speaker 2: he brought gambling to New Orleans and Louisiana. He was
- 1:35Speaker 2: 42 and I was at my junior senior prom. And
- 1:39Speaker 2: literally they were having a political party next door, like
- 1:41Speaker 2: different rooms, like in a convention center. And I was
- 1:44Speaker 2: standing outside and my date wasn't around with a couple
- 1:48Speaker 2: of friends. And he had one of his little henchmen
- 1:50Speaker 2: come up to me and say, the governor would like
- 1:52Speaker 2: to meet you and get your phone number. Wow. And
- 1:56Speaker 2: like a fool, I gave it to him because I
- 1:57Speaker 2: didn't know better. I was 16. And that started this
- 2:02Speaker 2: whole relationship, not a relationship, of him calling me and
- 2:05Speaker 2: sending me flowers and telling me that my name was,
- 2:09Speaker 2: that he was in Florida and he was writing my
- 2:12Speaker 2: name in the sand and the waves were washing it away.
- 2:14Speaker 2: You see, guys can get away with stuff.
- 2:18Speaker 1: This is while he's in office?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Oh, God, look up Edwin Edwards.
- 2:22Speaker 1: So while he's in office, he's calling a 16-year-old.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:26Speaker 1: And he's probably calling a million other women. Oh, gosh, yeah.
- 2:30Speaker 2: I mean, there was jokes about him because he was
- 2:32Speaker 2: movie star handsome. And he really, I mean, literally brought
- 2:36Speaker 2: gambling and so much. He was a big gambler. Gorgeous, funny,
- 2:40Speaker 2: Cajun accent. Very sexy. But, you know, back then, you
- 2:44Speaker 2: know how you had phone lines and somebody else could
- 2:46Speaker 2: pick up the other extension in another world?
- 2:49Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:49Speaker 2: So he would call me up and he would go
- 2:51Speaker 2: by the name Bandito. Bandito? That's like Carlos Danger.
- 2:58Speaker 1: With Anthony Weiner. Right.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Exactly. So I would have my parents. I'd be giggling.
- 3:05Speaker 2: You're 16, and it's hysterical when some older man, even
- 3:07Speaker 2: though he was very handsome... was calling you so I'd
- 3:09Speaker 2: say mom dad pick up your phone they'd all be
- 3:12Speaker 2: listening and he'd be telling me all this BS about
- 3:14Speaker 2: my name and the waves and I must come to
- 3:17Speaker 2: the mansion in Louisiana and he's got gifts for me
- 3:20Speaker 2: and I must go to LSU Baton Rouge because he
- 3:22Speaker 2: will make me queen of the campus and which is
- 3:26Speaker 2: why I didn't go there and I went to Loyola
- 3:28Speaker 2: University but this is all true and it's actually in
- 3:30Speaker 2: my book I mean I have a whole thing yeah
- 3:32Speaker 2: well the.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Book's called up all night right yes yeah you got
- 3:36Speaker 1: to get the book and read all these stories But
- 3:38Speaker 1: I like the Bill Clinton approach where you just get
- 3:40Speaker 1: her in a hotel room and drop your pants. Remember
- 3:44Speaker 1: with Paula Jones?
- 3:47Speaker 2: Oh, of course I do.
- 3:49Speaker 1: But that's Bill Clinton. He was just pulled on his pants. Here,
- 3:52Speaker 1: take a look.
- 3:52Speaker 2: What do you think? This all went on, Mark. This
- 3:56Speaker 2: all went on. I mean, I guess I was like that.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I mean, okay. I have to say this really quickly.
- 4:01Speaker 2: So when I was Miss Louisiana and I went up
- 4:03Speaker 2: to the state capitol to make a speech on young
- 4:05Speaker 2: women in politics or young people in politics. So I
- 4:09Speaker 2: didn't know, this is before I knew anything about that.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I was too naive to know that Edward Edwards was
- 4:15Speaker 2: going to hit on me. So it was all men
- 4:17Speaker 2: because there was no women in the Senate at the capitol.
- 4:22Speaker 2: our Congress people. So anyway, I get up in front
- 4:24Speaker 2: and I make this speech and it's so cute. And
- 4:26Speaker 2: at the very end, and I go, and my parents
- 4:28Speaker 2: are there and I'd like to thank Governor Edwards for
- 4:30Speaker 2: making this all possible. And I got this huge laugh
- 4:33Speaker 2: and a standing ovation. And I realized then I basically
- 4:38Speaker 2: was saying, I made this, they knew, they knew his
- 4:41Speaker 2: whole womanizing thing. He hit on everybody. So when I
- 4:44Speaker 2: said that it was hysterical, but that was my first
- 4:47Speaker 2: big laugh And I think at that point on, at
- 4:50Speaker 2: the tender age of 17, is why I got into
- 4:53Speaker 2: comedy later on.
- 4:55Speaker 1: So this governor, didn't it ever come out? Didn't anybody
- 4:57Speaker 1: ever do stories about his womanizing?
- 4:59Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh.
- 5:00Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Please. You will get the biggest kick. I'm surprised that
- 5:04Speaker 2: you don't remember that because you know all this stuff. Legendary.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Edwin Edwards. And like I said, devastatingly handsome. And had
- 5:13Speaker 2: a reality show recently. Not so many years ago. I mean,
- 5:15Speaker 2: he passed away not that long ago, married a much
- 5:18Speaker 2: younger woman, and had another child in his 80s.
- 5:20Speaker 1: All right, but wait a minute. This line of his,
- 5:23Speaker 1: you know, I'm putting your name in the sand here
- 5:26Speaker 1: in Florida. This doesn't really work on anybody, does it,
- 5:29Speaker 1: that kind of line?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Well, you're 16 years old, and you have your parents
- 5:32Speaker 2: on the other phone, and you're laughing hysterically. Of course not.
- 5:36Speaker 2: And then, you know, I was in all these pageants
- 5:38Speaker 2: at that time. So he pulls up to one of
- 5:40Speaker 2: the pageants I was in, and my first cousin who's
- 5:42Speaker 2: from New York, she's with me. And he's in a
- 5:45Speaker 2: state car, a state Louisiana trooper car, and he's in
- 5:49Speaker 2: the backseat. And the trooper comes out, or his bodyguard,
- 5:53Speaker 2: and says, Governor Edwards would like you to get in
- 5:55Speaker 2: the backseat of the car with him. Now, my cousin's
- 5:57Speaker 2: walking around. I get into the backseat. He totally starts
- 6:00Speaker 2: to try to make out with me. And I'm laughing hysterically.
- 6:03Speaker 2: This is why I use comedy as a defense my
- 6:05Speaker 2: entire career.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Yeah, but wait, isn't there a driver in this car?
- 6:09Speaker 2: Well, the driver got out and I got in. He says,
- 6:12Speaker 2: I'm a baby. Seriously, I'm totally underage. I mean, I
- 6:16Speaker 2: guess I was 17 at that point because I was
- 6:18Speaker 2: old enough to go into the Miss Louisiana pageant. And
- 6:21Speaker 2: my cousin's walking around and she doesn't know. We still
- 6:24Speaker 2: laugh about this to the day. She's a New Yorker
- 6:26Speaker 2: and she's she had her arm in a cast and
- 6:29Speaker 2: she's walking around. the state troopers walking around, and I'm
- 6:32Speaker 2: in the backseat of the car with the governor. You'd
- 6:34Speaker 2: think these guys wouldn't have gotten in trouble, right?
- 6:36Speaker 1: All right, but the governor's pawing you. How did you
- 6:38Speaker 1: get out of there?
- 6:40Speaker 2: Pawing me? I laughed in his face. I thought it
- 6:42Speaker 2: was the funniest thing I ever saw because you're a baby.
- 6:47Speaker 2: You know, some old man, even though he's good-looking, but,
- 6:50Speaker 2: you know, he's old enough to be your father.
- 6:51Speaker 1: And did he smell like Old Spice?
- 6:54Speaker 2: No, he was really hot. He really was. And then
- 6:57Speaker 2: later on when I went to the pageant, In Miss Louisiana,
- 7:02Speaker 2: my sister was my chaperone and my sister was beautiful
- 7:04Speaker 2: and a little older than me. He hit on her too.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Wait a minute.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Except I told my sister, you should have gone to
- 7:13Speaker 2: bed with him because you had nothing to lose. You
- 7:14Speaker 2: were newly divorced. And maybe I would have won the pageant. See,
- 7:17Speaker 2: I would get in so much trouble saying this in
- 7:19Speaker 2: front of women. I mean, because back then you could
- 7:22Speaker 2: have a sense of humor about this.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Wait a minute. There was nothing you could do. I
- 7:25Speaker 1: Googled this guy, Edwin Edwards. He's okay looking. He's not
- 7:28Speaker 1: that handsome.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Look at him in his youth.
- 7:30Speaker 1: I am. He's not that handsome. Yes, he was. He was.
- 7:33Speaker 2: He had the slick. He had that slick tongue, that
- 7:38Speaker 2: Cajun accent. And he would tell joke after joke, and
- 7:41Speaker 2: he charmed everyone. But you've got to look up, like,
- 7:45Speaker 2: the stories about– he would laugh about– okay, one more
- 7:48Speaker 2: story because I never got out of town. I can't
- 7:50Speaker 2: believe this was my show. But anyway, I'm doing a
- 7:53Speaker 2: commercial years later doing my Up All Night Days. And
- 7:56Speaker 2: so I'm in my 30s. I'm in New Orleans, and
- 7:59Speaker 2: it was for Barks Root Beer, which is a big
- 8:00Speaker 2: local root beer. And they have all these celebrities.
- 8:03Speaker 1: They have me.
- 8:03Speaker 2: They have him. They've got the Coach of the Saints,
- 8:06Speaker 2: all these different local celebrities in New Orleans. And they
- 8:09Speaker 2: had me whisper something in his ear about the soft drink.
- 8:12Speaker 2: And we're on live mic, okay? But he doesn't realize.
- 8:15Speaker 2: He's got a lavalier. I've got a lavalier on. We're
- 8:18Speaker 2: getting ready to shoot the bit, and he says to me,
- 8:20Speaker 2: and I can't say the word, but you can fill
- 8:21Speaker 2: in the blanks. He goes, you know, I should have
- 8:24Speaker 2: you when... I had the chance. Well, he never had
- 8:27Speaker 2: the chance, but he should have, you know what, blanked
- 8:29Speaker 2: when he had the chance. And the entire, the sound man,
- 8:33Speaker 2: the cameraman, every person in the studio turned around and
- 8:37Speaker 2: looked at me and just went, oh. He literally just
- 8:40Speaker 2: said that on a live mic.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Hey, it says he served four terms as governor. He
- 8:43Speaker 1: got through four terms without ever any scandal? Oh, no.
- 8:47Speaker 2: There was so much scandal. They loved him. If he
- 8:49Speaker 2: was alive right now, he'd win again. That's Louisiana politics, Warwick. Oh, salacious.
- 8:54Speaker 2: They were fabulous.
- 8:55Speaker 1: All right. Well, I'm going to go read about it.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I'm going to go watch video of this guy.
- 8:59Speaker 2: You've got to. Really and truly. And I'll send you
- 9:01Speaker 2: some pictures. I sent you a couple of pictures just
- 9:04Speaker 2: now because I'm coming to town. Last announcement before you
- 9:06Speaker 2: throw me off. And your other person says, why don't
- 9:08Speaker 2: you have a politician on? But you can say I
- 9:10Speaker 2: was a politician. And I lost by 135 votes.
- 9:11Speaker 1: You're coming to New York?
- 9:13Speaker 2: I'm coming to New York and I want, and I'm,
- 9:15Speaker 2: I'm inviting you right now in front of all of

- 9:28Speaker 2: but you know, of you telling me all the legendary
- 9:31Speaker 2: spots of New York and about the legendary comics, because
- 9:34Speaker 2: you and I just did that very briefly. I think
- 9:36Speaker 2: it would be an amazing special.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Rhonda Shearer was here a few weeks ago and
- 9:41Speaker 1: we were outside and I said, That spot right there
- 9:44Speaker 1: is where the theater was, where they did The Honeymooners.
