- 0:08The Book of Ruth begins in dark days, but even
- 0:12in the darkness, God was at work. Through loss,
- 0:15uncertainty, and unexpected turns, we discover
- 0:19a beautiful story of grace, redemption,
- 0:22and hope. Join Scott Pauley for this new study,
- 0:25The Gospel According to Ruth. Light for Dark Days.
- 0:36The oldest book in the Bible, the book of Job, tells us that man that
- 0:39is born of woman is a few days and full of trouble. The question
- 0:44is not, are you going to face trouble? The answer to that is yes.
- 0:47The real question is, what will you do when
- 0:52that trouble comes? We return today to our study of this little
- 0:55book of Ruth. Now we're going back in time 3,300 years,
- 0:58but isn't it fascinating how applicable,
- 1:02uh, the, the story of Ruth is to our world?
- 1:05Because here we are living in dark days spiritually, in days of great
- 1:10need. And what do we need? The exact same thing that Ruth needed
- 1:15and that Naomi's family needed. We need God. We need a divine
- 1:19intervention And the only way to, to enter into the
- 1:23divine resources is through faith. And so we established
- 1:27already from verse number 1 that a famine had come. A famine was in
- 1:31the land, and that famines come to all people,
- 1:34even good people, even God's people. And they come for many different
- 1:38reasons, just like storms. They really are a parallel to
- 1:42storms in the Bible. Sometimes God used storms to chasten,
- 1:46as he did for Jonah. Sometimes he used
- 1:49storms to teach, as he did for the disciples. Well,
- 1:53sometimes God uses famine to bring judgment, as he
- 1:57did for the nation of Israel. But sometimes God may be using that same famine
- 2:02to bring someone to himself, as he is in
- 2:05the life of Naomi and in Ruth. And so God
- 2:10is at work. God is always at work. You can believe that. The question
- 2:14today is this: What will you do in
- 2:18the famine? And in Ruth chapter number 1, we find
- 2:223 distinct responses. When trouble
- 2:25comes, when the famine comes, when everything falls
- 2:29apart, when difficulty is, is all that you are dealing
- 2:32with, what will you do then?
- 2:36Let's begin as the story begins with the
- 2:40first main character. It is a man by the name of Elimelech.
- 2:44The Bible says in verse 1, there was a famine in the land,
- 2:47and a certain man of Bethlehem Judah
- 2:51went to sojourn in the country of Moab,
- 2:55he and his wife and his 2 sons.
- 3:00The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi,
- 3:02and the name of his 2 sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem
- 3:06Judah. And they came into the country of Moab
- 3:09and continued there. And then you come to verse number 3.
- 3:13And Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she was
- 3:17left and her 2 sons. So the
- 3:21first possibility, the first response in the famine
- 3:25is this: some people flee. I mean by
- 3:29that, they run. They, they think that
- 3:33a change of scenery, a change of geography, a change of circumstance will make
- 3:37things better. The psalmist, I think, articulated this well.
- 3:41He said, I want to take the wings of the morning and dwell in the
- 3:44uttermost part of the sea. In other words, what he meant was, if I could
- 3:48just get out of here, get me a first-class ticket out of this place,
- 3:52maybe if I can escape, there'll be some relief.
- 3:56In that same psalm, he said, even there God meets me.
- 4:00Even there God is working. I can't, I can't flee from God's
- 4:04presence. And I think this is very important because when we run,
- 4:08we're always running one direction or the other. We're either running toward the
- 4:12Lord or running away from the Lord. May I
- 4:15say to you that Elimelech, I believe, is a negative example.
- 4:19Now, did God turn it for good? Yes. Did God work,
- 4:23uh, in his, in his wife after his death?
- 4:26Absolutely. Did the providence of God bring a
- 4:30wonderful redemption out of all this? Yes. Praise God for grace.
- 4:35But I think it's important to point out to you that Elimelech made
- 4:39some decisions that were not wise decisions, and there were consequences
- 4:43for those decisions. You see, he failed to
- 4:47wait on God. He failed to wait on God. If you
- 4:51jump down to verse number 6, the Bible says— this is after the death
- 4:54of Elimelech— that Naomi heard in the country of Moab how that
- 4:59the Lord had visited his people in giving them bread.
- 5:03Would you put yourself in the story for just a moment?
- 5:05What What would have happened if they had waited?
- 5:08Elimelech, what if you had just stayed right where you are? I think
- 5:13sometimes people are looking for an out. They're looking to
- 5:17find some better circumstance. The grass is always greener on the other side, right?
- 5:22And yet the reality is oftentimes we quit just before the breakthrough.
- 5:27We stop praying just before the answer. We miss what
- 5:30God has for us because we try to find some shortcut
- 5:34to that. Could I point out to you that there were 2 men both living
- 5:37in Bethlehem, both faced the famine, and both made
- 5:41a decision. Who were those 2 men? Elimelech and Boaz.
- 5:45Elimelech left, Boaz stayed.
- 5:50Who gets the blessing? Boaz does. Who sees the, the divine
- 5:54providence of God? Boaz does. Who gets to be a part of what
- 5:57God is doing? Boaz does. But Elimelech— Elimelech
- 6:01misses all of that because Elimelech tries
- 6:05to fix the problem his way instead of God's
- 6:09way. Can I tell you that time spent waiting on God is never wasted time?
- 6:13That in the waiting, God is working. Beware of getting ahead
- 6:17of the Lord, of running ahead of God, of fleeing
- 6:22circumstances, but in the midst of that,
- 6:25drifting from God. You know what the devil says? He says, don't go
- 6:29too far. You don't have to go too far away. Moab was only 20 or
- 6:3230 miles. That's not far. He says don't stay long.
- 6:36In fact, did you notice the Bible says they went to sojourn?
- 6:39That word literally means a temporary stay. Elimelech didn't
- 6:43mean to die in Moab. Elimelech didn't mean to live
- 6:47in Moab for very long. But isn't that always the way temptation
- 6:51comes? Don't go far, don't stay long.
- 6:54And then how about this one? Don't give up much. It won't cost
- 6:58you much. Here is a man who went looking for life, and what
- 7:03did he find? He found death. Dear listener,
- 7:06I want to tell you today that there is something worse than bad circumstances.
- 7:11It's bad choices. Elimelech is never mentioned
- 7:15after verse 3. Boaz— Boaz gets listed
- 7:18in the genealogical records of Christ in Matthew and in Luke.
- 7:23Elimelech missed all of that. Beware of making
- 7:27choices without seeking God's will and God's time
- 7:31and God's way, because not only will it affect you,
- 7:34it's also going to affect your family. You see,
- 7:38it's going to have an effect on his wife. It's going to bring her
- 7:42to bitterness. It's going to have effect on his sons Mahlon and Chilion. Both of
- 7:46them will also die in the land of Moab. Did you know
- 7:49that Elimelech's name means my God is king?
- 7:52That's quite a name, isn't it? But it didn't live that way,
- 7:57because instead of God ruling in his life, Elimelech was in charge.
- 8:00Elimelech was making the decisions. Did God overrule in the end? Yes.
- 8:04Oh yes. Did God bring good out of evil?
- 8:07Absolutely. Did God bring fullness out of famine? Yes.
- 8:10Did God bring blessing out of bitterness? You better believe it. But Elimelech
- 8:14never saw any of that. Who's king in your house?
- 8:19Who's king in your heart? Who sits on the throne and
- 8:22rules and reigns. That's what the, the verse
- 8:26in the New Testament, let the peace of God rule in your heart, means.
- 8:29Literally, let the peace of God sit on the throne and
- 8:33make the decision. You know, the truth of the matter is,
- 8:36all of us at times are looking for an out, but we don't
- 8:40need an out. You know what we need? We need God. And so I want
- 8:44to challenge you not to be Elimelech, not to flee,
- 8:48not to run, not to miss what God has
- 8:51for you. This is a man who lost more than he gained.
- 8:55Crisis hours always reveal. Crisis hours purge.
- 8:59Some people draw nearer, some people go further away from God.
- 9:04By the grace of God, when the famine comes, do not
- 9:08be an Elimelech.
