- 0:00Back with Hall of Fame head coach Gino Oriama. We've got basketball on the
- 0:03schedule this weekend. Tomorrow the men take on Arkansas Pine Bluff in stores eleven
- 0:09thirty for Mike and Wayne, and then the women take on North Carolina as
- 0:13part of the Hall of Fame Women's Showcase at Mohegan Sun for thirty for that
- 0:18one for Deb Fisk and myself here on the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity
- 0:22Network app and the Varsitynetwork dot com. G know, with all the injuries,
- 0:27it changes the pieces of the puzzle. Maybe players are in positions that
- 0:31they're not used to playing in. What's that been like trying to reconfigure everything
- 0:37that you hoped would go well when the season began, when you had all
- 0:40those healthy bodies that are significantly down now and key pieces of that too.
- 0:49Yeah, it's it's been obviously incredibly frustrating because it's not the first time.
- 1:00You know, I think everybody can can rationalize, Okay, this is a
- 1:07you know, this is once in a blue moon occurrence, and let's deal
- 1:12with it. But when you know, our seniors, that's all they've known.
- 1:19They came here and we're in the bubble and then every year they've been
- 1:26playing shorthanded, it seems like and after a while, I think it just
- 1:32really becomes a heavy burden to carry around. And I'm sure they feel it.
- 1:41I'm sure the players feel it, because I know the coaches feel it.
- 1:44Yeah, And there's nothing you can do about it, you know,
- 1:48you just have to deal with it, and you have to try to make
- 1:51it work the best that you can. And you're right, players are in
- 1:57difficult situations. But you know, anytime it's difficult, it's also an opportunity
- 2:04to learn and get better and and it may not look so great right now,
- 2:07but you have to hope that it's it's paying off somewhere down the road.
- 2:14How's Page handling all this, because I know she's been putting some tough,
- 2:17tough spots too, and still trying to deal with this. And I
- 2:22mean even openly you said she didn't play well in Texas. Yeah, I
- 2:25think the the thing that is evident is that, uh, you know,
- 2:32not playing for a year obviously has an effect. Number two. You know,
- 2:38if you take a look at Pages, the only year she's been healthy
- 2:43was her freshman year, and you know, it was a magical year for
- 2:49her and and and all the things that she accomplished, and then ever since
- 2:53then, it's been one thing after another. So when you add up all
- 2:59the games that Page has played, she's probably somewhere in her sophomore year,
- 3:07you know, towards the end of her sophomore year, you know, if
- 3:08you think about it, given how many games she missed as a sophomore and
- 3:14missed the whole season as a junior. So yeah, she's not in an
- 3:20ideal situation, and she's I'm sure frustrated. I'm sure wants to wants to
- 3:25play better and wants to do more, and that's not usually the right recipe
- 3:31when you're forcing the issue and you try to do everything. So we've got
- 3:38to figure that one out too. So there's a lot of figuring out that
- 3:42we have to do. Is there any trepidation at all from the injury with
- 3:46all Page? Still? I mean, I mean, look, it's been
- 3:49what year and a half now, but still you come back from an ACL
- 3:53injury and you're only eight games back into your college career resuming it, Is
- 3:58there any that you notice or is Page maybe just I don't know what the
- 4:02what the what the word I'm trying to figure out here trying to say is
- 4:05but do you notice anything different? I guess from page pre injury to to
- 4:11now not necessarily. I think there's sometimes a hesitancy or or unsure of you
- 4:25know, should I, should I not? You know, And and when
- 4:32you think about it, you look back, you know, she had thirty
- 4:34two against somebody and we lost, and she had seven. Then it's she
- 4:40had twenty seven and we lost. So you look around and you say,
- 4:46well, you know, what more do I have to do? Well,
- 4:49you can't try to do more, you know, we just need to figure
- 4:54out a way to make it all work with everybody that we have and not
- 4:59I feel like, you know, it's all on one person shoulder right,
- 5:03And that's part of the inconsistencies that you talked about after the game on Wednesday.
- 5:10And it's not just game the game. It sounds like it's practice to
- 5:13practice. That's usually why it happens, you know, Yeah, that that's
- 5:20usually that's usually why it occurs when you're trying to figure it out and practice
- 5:28every day and trying to put the right pieces together. And last year we
- 5:32were we were able to handle it better because there was a sense of other
- 5:36than we know, you know, we knew Page wasn't coming wasn't coming back,
- 5:42but we we knew, you know, so when Dork goes out,
- 5:48we knew Dork was coming back, you know, and then when he was
- 5:50out for a while, we knew as he was coming back, and you
- 5:54know, whoever it was, you know, when Carolyn was out, we
- 5:57knew she was coming back. But I think the inconsistency is four seniors in
- 6:12our rotation and for and no in between. So there's a lot of experience
- 6:20and no experience, and it's it's a little bit jumbled up right now,
- 6:27and we have to you know, we have to get Eventually, we'll find
- 6:32that it's just taken longer than I would hope, and our schedule hasn't helped
- 6:36us. You know, that's not exactly the ideal situation you want to be
- 6:41in when you're when you're going through this, right and again, when we
- 6:45open the broadcast on Wednesday, you know, we put this in a perspective.
- 6:48Yes, Okay, the team was four and three going into ball State.
- 6:51The losses were the current two three and five teams, so it's not
- 6:55like you're playing losing a bad team's gino. Yeah, yeah, I mean
- 7:00I get that, but that doesn't make it any better. I mean I
- 7:03get that, and you know, ifre's anybody else anywhere else and say,
- 7:10well, of course that's understandable, but that doesn't really go over too well
- 7:15or in here. So the sun did come up though the next day.
- 7:18Yeah, it always does. It always does. I mean I've I've always
- 7:25known that. It's always you know, it's always another day and always another
- 7:30opportunity to try to get a little bit better, right, more than wells
