- 0:04>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Sure, weight loss is great, but especially if you're on a
- 0:06GLP1 medication like Ozempic
- 0:09or Mounjaro, also known as Wegovy and
- 0:12um, Zepbound. They can make shedding pounds easier
- 0:15than finding cat videos on the Internet. But here's the
- 0:18thing. The scale is just one
- 0:21part of your story. Today
- 0:24we're diving into why your focus shouldn't
- 0:27be just about losing weight, but about living
- 0:29better and longer. So let's put down
- 0:32the kale flavored rice cakes and pick
- 0:35up some evidence based science and get started.
- 0:41I am, um, your Chief Medical Explanationist, Dr. Terry Simpson,
- 0:43and this is Fork U Fork
- 0:46University, where we make sense of the madness,
- 0:49bust a few myths and learn a little bit about
- 0:52food as medicine.
- 0:57Let's get one thing straight. If
- 1:00you're on GLP1 medications, the medication
- 1:03is doing most of the work when it comes to weight
- 1:05loss. These drugs, as you know from my previous
- 1:08podcast, curb appetite in the brain
- 1:11and help you feel full
- 1:13faster and longer.
- 1:16They're better than any personal trainer you could
- 1:19get because it's there full time, helping your
- 1:22biology, keeping your appetite in check so you don't
- 1:25feel like tackling a buffet every time
- 1:27you pass one. But here's where the diet
- 1:30comes in. If medicine is doing the heavy
- 1:33lifting, diet is the
- 1:36maintenance plan. You're not, uh, eating to lose
- 1:38even more weight. You're eating to nourish your
- 1:41body. Think of your body as a high performance
- 1:44car. Sure, you've got the
- 1:47turbocharged engine thanks to the GLP1,
- 1:50but what happens if you fuel it with junk
- 1:52spoiler? It won't run
- 1:55well for long. The goal isn't to restrict
- 1:58your food intake or to cut out entire food groups.
- 2:01It's to pack every bite with nutrients to
- 2:04help your body thrive. Your food
- 2:07should fuel your energy, support your heart and your brain,
- 2:10and keep your long term health
- 2:13on track. You know, I love the
- 2:15Mediterranean diet. It's one of the most researched and
- 2:18recommended ways of eating for long term
- 2:21health. And it's not diet in
- 2:24that sad celery and cottage cheese sense of
- 2:27the word. It truly is a lifestyle
- 2:29dieta. The Greek word for diet
- 2:32came from eating these foods. And this diet
- 2:35includes olive oil, fish, whole grains and enough,
- 2:38well enough, really, fruits and vegetables to think maybe
- 2:41I am in the Mediterranean. But don't be fooled. You can
- 2:44eat the Mediterranean diet with almost any worldwide
- 2:47cuisine. And while studies have shown that the
- 2:49Mediterranean diet isn't just good for your waistline, it
- 2:52really came about because it's good for Your heart.
- 2:56And then, as we discovered later on, great for your
- 2:59brain, decreases your risk of cancer, decreases your
- 3:01autoimmunity. One study
- 3:04found that people who follow this diet reduce their risk
- 3:07of heart disease by up to 30%. And
- 3:10another found that it will reduce your risk of getting
- 3:12Alzheimer's by as much as 50%.
- 3:15Why? Because this way of eating is packed with
- 3:18nutrients that fight inflammation, stabilize blood sugar, and
- 3:21keep your gut bacteria happy. And if your gut
- 3:24bacteria are happy, you're happy. Because those little
- 3:27guys send signals to your brain that affect everything
- 3:30from cravings to mental
- 3:32clarity. Did you know that olive oil
- 3:35contains compounds that are a, uh, natural anti
- 3:38inflammatory, kind of like ibuprofen, but without the
- 3:41side effects. So drizzle away.
- 3:43Here's something I see a lot from people on the
- 3:46Internet when it comes to these particular
- 3:49diets. They get hyper focused
- 3:52about protein. And I get it. Protein is
- 3:55important. It helps preserve muscle mass, keeps you
- 3:58feeling satisfied, supports your metabolism. But
- 4:00here is the problem. Some have
- 4:03become so protein centric that they
- 4:06forget about the rest of their plate. They can
- 4:09load up on chicken breasts, protein powders and eggs, and
- 4:12suddenly their meals look like a bodybuilder's prep
- 4:14menu. But food is about balance,
- 4:17not monotony. And that's where the Mediterranean
- 4:20style of eating comes in. You can get plenty of high
- 4:23quality protein from a variety of sources. Legumes,
- 4:26fish, nuts, seeds, even a bit of red meat, and
- 4:29certainly Greek yogurt. Yep, I said
- 4:32red meat. It's not the enemy. And the
- 4:34Mediterranean diet allows you to have about 4 ounces a day,
- 4:37about the size of a deck of cards or a modest steak, not
- 4:40that 16 ounce monstrosity you see in
- 4:42steakhouses. And if you're on a GLP1, 4
- 4:45ounces is a pretty nice number.
- 4:48Legumes like lentils and chickpeas are
- 4:51nutritional powerhouses. Not only are they rich
- 4:53in protein, but they are loaded with fiber, which is
- 4:57great for your gut, which helps regulate your blood
- 4:59sugar, but also regulates your cholesterol.
- 5:02Decreases, increasing the cholesterol that's absorbed.
- 5:05Fish, especially fatty varieties like salmon and
- 5:08mackerel, provide omega 3 fatty acids,
- 5:11which only can come from your diet.
- 5:14So if you want to balance your plate with, you know,
- 5:17vegetables and grains and protein, it can
- 5:19be very simple and delicious. Now, I've talked
- 5:22about the DASH diet in the past, and DASH stands
- 5:25for Dietary Approach to Stop
- 5:28Hypertension. It is called the
- 5:30American version of the Mediterranean diet.
- 5:33It is quite effective and has been proven in
- 5:36multiple studies to be one of the most Effective diets out there
- 5:39containing almost the same ingredients, but a little more
- 5:41Americanized form. The DASH diet emphasizes
- 5:44again, fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins while cutting
- 5:47back on sodium. So this is another
- 5:50sensible sibling to the Mediterranean diet. And
- 5:53studies have shown that DASH can significantly
- 5:56lower blood blood pressure, reduce the risk of stroke,
- 5:59and improve kidney function. All of which are improved
- 6:02with their GLP medicines. Indeed.
- 6:05So for people on GLP1 medications, DASH is a
- 6:08perfect complement. Why? Because it's rich in fiber,
- 6:11it's low in processed foods, which means you're not
- 6:14feeding the insulin resistant beast. Plus,
- 6:16it's practical. No need to hunt down some
- 6:19exotic ingredient or attend cooking classes taught by some
- 6:22Instagram chef. I know there are those of you
- 6:25out there who are very, very pure and think that something
- 6:28came in a box with 37 ingredients is not part of the DASH
- 6:31diet and it has to have grown or swam in the
- 6:34sea. Well, that's not a bad track to
- 6:36take. But let's be clear. If you actually knew all
- 6:39the ingredients that were in an ounce of fish, it
- 6:42would be far more than 37.
- 6:45Here's the thing about eating in a
- 6:47healthier way. Diets are really
- 6:50temporary by design. Even though
- 6:53some of them say, oh, this is a lifestyle, they're
- 6:55temporary. You have to think about the
- 6:58long term, your life
- 7:01for your life. Research
- 7:04has been very clear about this. People who eat
- 7:07diets rich in plants, lean proteins and
- 7:10healthy fats live longer,
- 7:12healthier lives. Want an example?
- 7:15Now, I know the blue zones have been a little bit controversial,
- 7:18but blue zones, which are specific
- 7:21villages where people live to 100 and beyond, their
- 7:24diets are all plant forward, minimally processed and
- 7:27culturally joyful. These folks aren't
- 7:29choking down kale smoothies in the name of self
- 7:32discipline or oh my God, have you ever had
- 7:35wheatgrass in a smoothie? Uh, please don't
- 7:38try it. But these people are
- 7:40enjoying meals with family and friends, savoring
- 7:43vegetables, whole grains, and even the occasional glass of
- 7:46wine. But the key takeaway is balance.
- 7:49You don't have to give up everything you love. You
- 7:52just have to make sure that your choices are nourishing your
- 7:55body first. There was a great
- 7:58study in one of the more famous blue zones called Okinawa,
- 8:01in a specific village of that area where they eat a
- 8:04diet that's 96% plant based, including lots
- 8:07of sweet potatoes, tofu and seaweed. And they
- 8:10have this saying, stop eating when you're
- 8:1280% full. And this is one of the keys to
- 8:15people on GLP1s, stop eating when
- 8:18you're 80% full, you will be fine. You can
- 8:21power through that feeling, but it either doesn't leave
- 8:24you with a very good place to be like reflux,
- 8:27heartburn, and maybe even nausea and vomiting.
- 8:29But you will find you don't need to eat as much as you
- 8:32did before. So when
- 8:35thinking about long term health while on GLP1s or
- 8:38anything, here are some practical tips. Embrace plants,
- 8:41more fruits, vegetables to every meal. Make them the star
- 8:44of your plate, not a sad garnish and expand
- 8:47your fruits. There are some amazing tropical
- 8:50fruits out there that you can try. Go lean on protein.
- 8:52Think grilled chicken, fish, tofu, beans. Bonus points
- 8:55for salmon, which is really loaded with omega
- 8:583s. Olive oil should be used liberally. I
- 9:01cook with it and I know some people say, well, it has
- 9:04a, uh, low smoke point. I never have a problem smoking
- 9:07olive oil. I I don't smoke it. And
- 9:10here's the thing, if you know how to cook, you're not going to have a problem
- 9:13cooking with olive oil if you're heating up your pan so that the olive
- 9:16oil is smoking. We need to maybe give you a
- 9:18cooking lesson or two. Whole grains have been
- 9:21much vilified and while we do want you to swap
- 9:24out the white bread and the pasta for
- 9:27more whole grain pasta and
- 9:30whole grain bread, there's also quinoa, brown
- 9:33rice and other whole grain options. And you know,
- 9:36finally, you really need to think about guilt free
- 9:39getting rid of diet culture. Getting rid of these
- 9:42absolutes in your brain about pizza is
- 9:45bad and scoop of gelato is oh my God, you're going
- 9:48to regain the weight. You know what, thin people
- 9:50eat that and do just fine.
- 9:54So if you're overwhelmed with all this, I want you to start small.
- 9:56Add a new healthy food to your plate this week.
- 9:59Baby steps moving forward. And there you have
- 10:02it folks. Eating for long term health, not
- 10:05just weight loss. If you're on GLP meds,
- 10:08think of this as your chance to rewrite the story. Not
- 10:11just about your weight, but about your future.
- 10:15And until next time, I'm Dr. Terry Simpson,
- 10:18your chief medical explanationist at 4Q, reminding
- 10:20you it's not about the fork in your hand,
- 10:23it's about what's at the end of it. Eat well, live
- 10:26well, and don't forget to enjoy the ride. We'll
- 10:29see you next time.
- 10:30Do check out the blog associated with this, which will have
- 10:33complete references. The blog is at
- 10:36YourDoctorsOrders.com
- 10:38or ForkU.com
- 10:41Yep, I have that website. This
- 10:44was written and researched by me Dr. Terry Simpson, and I'm
- 10:47responsible for the content. Please note this,
- 10:50while I am a board certified physician, I am
- 10:53not your doctor. If I was your doctor, you'd know all this
- 10:56information anyway. But I'm not. If you're seeking to
- 10:58change your diet, if you're seeking for counseling on
- 11:01GLP1 medications, please seek a
- 11:03board certified medical physician to help
- 11:07guide you with that way who might send you to a registered
- 11:09dietitian. Please don't see a chiropractor
- 11:12or a gym bro or somebody who says they're
- 11:15certified and this, that or the other thing. If you want some help with your
- 11:18GLP1 medicine, I always recommend our friends at
- 11:20Accomplish Health Document. I want to
- 11:23thank our distributors, the folks at Simpler
- 11:26media and the pod God, Mr.
- 11:29Evotera. Thank you production team.
- 11:32We will be seeing you next week. Enjoy your
- 11:35diet and try and find something new
- 11:38in your stocking, like a dragon
- 11:40fruit.
- 11:47I got one of these places that sends you all of this exotic
- 11:50fruit and now I have all of this weird fruit
- 11:53which looks like sea urchins. And then I have dragon
- 11:56fruit. And the only thing I ever knew to do about lychees was put
- 11:58them in a martini, but I'm just not drinking anymore,
- 12:01so I've got to find something else to do with them.
- 12:04Fruit. Who knew?
- 12:07Uh, yeah, fruit. Um, there's this great
- 12:10podcast I listened to with this, uh, doctor.
- 12:13He calls himself a medical explanation that,
- 12:16uh, he talks about, uh, fruit a
- 12:19lot. Maybe, uh, maybe you should listen.
