- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14In our current series, Fruitful Work, we've been
- 0:16asking the question, what kind of fruit am
- 0:18I bearing at work?
- 0:20And I have here in my apple a
- 0:21piece of fruit.
- 0:22Did I just say I have here in
- 0:23my apple?
- 0:24I have here in my hand an apple,
- 0:25a piece of fruit.
- 0:26It is a honey crisp apple.
- 0:29And I'm going to take a bite.
- 0:32Mm-hmm.
- 0:35And pretty good.
- 0:37Aldi has good produce.
- 0:38Would recommend.
- 0:40And as I hold this apple, it makes
- 0:42me think about all the things we've talked
- 0:43about related to fruit in this series.
- 0:46And it also raises a question.
- 0:48Why did Paul choose to describe the fruit
- 0:52of the spirit as fruit?
- 0:55Because these things, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
- 0:58goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, these things
- 1:04could have been described a lot of different
- 1:05ways, right?
- 1:07He could have called them the work of
- 1:08the spirit.
- 1:09He could have used the metaphor of light
- 1:11like he does in other passages, a waco
- 1:13sleeper rise from the dead and Christ will
- 1:14shine on you.
- 1:16But he chose to use the metaphor of
- 1:17fruit.
- 1:18And we've been talking about love specifically in
- 1:21these past final three episodes and how love
- 1:25sums up all of the fruit.
- 1:27It's actually a singular fruit, not fruits of
- 1:30the spirit, fruit of the spirit, love, and
- 1:33then all the rest.
- 1:35And I think it's actually significant when we
- 1:37think about the nature of love that Paul
- 1:40chose to use the metaphor of fruit because
- 1:43only living things can bear fruit.
- 1:46So today we'll be talking about love as
- 1:48the way of life.
- 1:53Think about the difference between a rock and
- 1:55a tree.
- 1:56A rock can move around, but it can't
- 1:58move itself around.
- 1:59It can be carried along by a river
- 2:00or thrown by someone.
- 2:01It can be shattered into pieces, but it
- 2:03can't interact with its environment.
- 2:06It can't move of its own accord.
- 2:08It can't grow.
- 2:10It can't reproduce.
- 2:11It can't bear fruit.
- 2:13Only a living thing can bear fruit.
- 2:17And a tree is like that.
- 2:19A tree can interact with the soil, with
- 2:21the sunlight, with the water, gather it into
- 2:23itself, and transform it into a piece of
- 2:27fruit with seed inside, with the potential for
- 2:30new life continuing even after that tree.
- 2:34And this is actually on a spectrum, moving
- 2:37closer and closer to the kind of life
- 2:39that Jesus gives us, that the Bible is
- 2:42the story of how God gives us a
- 2:44certain kind of life.
- 2:46So if a tree has a certain kind
- 2:47of life that a rock doesn't have, a
- 2:50dog has a certain kind of life that
- 2:51a tree doesn't have, because the dog can
- 2:53not only interact with its environment like the
- 2:55tree can, but the dog can also experience
- 2:58desire.
- 2:59So we might poetically say that the tree
- 3:01is thirsty for water, but it's just a
- 3:04metaphor.
- 3:04It's not literal.
- 3:05Whereas a dog is literally thirsty for water,
- 3:09and the dog can let you know if
- 3:10it's thirsty for water.
- 3:11You can understand the dog's needs, because the
- 3:14dog is also interacting with you.
- 3:17And the dog also has desires that may
- 3:19not be exact needs, so maybe you're eating
- 3:20dinner, and the dog comes up and gives
- 3:22you its puppy face, and you know that
- 3:25the dog desires to have some of your
- 3:26dinner, but it doesn't really need your dinner.
- 3:28It has its own dinner in its dish,
- 3:30but you understand the desire of your dog.
- 3:33You can feel that.
- 3:36And dogs, of course, have the capacity with
- 3:38training, with coaching, with healthy guidance from human
- 3:41beings, to learn to choose one desire over
- 3:44another.
- 3:45So for example, the dog might desire to
- 3:48interrupt dinner, but the dog also has a
- 3:50desire to please its master.
- 3:52And so the dog, with good training, learns,
- 3:54okay, I'm not going to always beg during
- 3:56dinner because I've been trained not to.
- 3:59So there's the spectrum of life, right?
- 4:01A tree can interact with its environment, a
- 4:04dog can interact with its environment, and it
- 4:07can experience desires and can even choose one
- 4:11desire over another desire.
- 4:13It can choose the deeper desire over the
- 4:15more superficial desire.
- 4:17Then we get to us.
- 4:18What kind of life do we have?
- 4:20Well, we certainly have all those characteristics of
- 4:23the dog.
- 4:23We can interact with our environment.
- 4:25We experience desires.
- 4:27We can learn to choose one desire over
- 4:29another desire.
- 4:31But the other thing that's true of our
- 4:33experience because of the redemption we've received in
- 4:36Jesus Christ is we can interact with God
- 4:39himself.
- 4:41We can have that kind of interactive capacity
- 4:43with our master, with our Lord, with our
- 4:48Savior, Jesus Christ.
- 4:50We can learn from him how to prefer
- 4:52deeper and truer desires over the more superficial
- 4:55desires that can lead us astray.
- 4:59And that's what leads us to the connection
- 5:01between life and love.
- 5:04The fruit of the Spirit is love.
- 5:07Because remember that definition of love from C
- 5:09.S. Lewis?
- 5:10It's a steady wish for the loved person's
- 5:12ultimate good as far as it can be
- 5:15obtained.
- 5:16Well, when we're interacting with other people, we
- 5:18come up against our desires.
- 5:20We come up against the fact that we
- 5:22can choose A or we can choose B.
- 5:25And sometimes choosing A is good for someone
- 5:28else and choosing B is bad for someone
- 5:30else.
- 5:31And that capacity to choose between our desires
- 5:33is part of the characteristics of life, part
- 5:36of what makes us living beings with a
- 5:39fullness of life, a capacity to choose our
- 5:41will, as we talked about in the self
- 5:43-control episode.
- 5:45So we could also define love or a
- 5:47certain maturity of love as choosing the loved
- 5:52person and their good over and above any
- 5:56contrary desires that you might have.
- 5:59Choosing the loved person and their good over
- 6:03and above any contrary desires that you might
- 6:05have.
- 6:07And we know this in very specific examples
- 6:09of how love works.
- 6:10So, for example, marriage.
- 6:12What's one of the marriage vows?
- 6:14It's to be exclusively partnered with the person
- 6:17that you are committing to love.
- 6:19In the traditional marriage vows, it says, forsaking
- 6:22all others.
- 6:24Part of committing to that one person and
- 6:26saying, I'm going to love you in this
- 6:27particular way is I'm going to forsake every
- 6:30other opportunity.
- 6:31I am always going to choose A.
- 6:33I am always going to choose you, even
- 6:36though I might still experience desire for B
- 6:38or C or D, I'm going to choose
- 6:41you.
- 6:43And that's what makes love and intimacy real
- 6:46is that capacity to choose.
- 6:50Sometimes I'll be scrolling through like Instagram or
- 6:53some other social media page and I like
- 6:56cat videos because I have cats now.
- 6:58So I've somehow become an Internet cat video
- 7:00person, much to my own embarrassment, perhaps.
- 7:04But people will share a video where they're
- 7:06like, look, the cat blessed me.
- 7:08The cat chose me because the cat like
- 7:09hops up on their lap and snuggles up
- 7:11with them.
- 7:11Right.
- 7:12Now, people don't tend to share this as
- 7:14much about plants.
- 7:15Like people still have social media videos about
- 7:16their plants.
- 7:16But if somebody like put a potted plant
- 7:18in their lap and was like, look, the
- 7:19plant blessed me, people would be like, well,
- 7:22yeah, I mean, you're experiencing blessing through the
- 7:24plant, but it's not exactly the same as
- 7:25the cat because the cat had the option
- 7:26to choose something else and the cat chose
- 7:28you.
- 7:28That's what makes it special.
- 7:29That's what makes it intimate.
- 7:32This is part of the architecture of love
- 7:34that God's put into the universe is we
- 7:37can choose A instead of B or C
- 7:40or D, and that's what makes love real.
- 7:44And this brings us back to one of
- 7:45those early Bible metaphors, one of those early
- 7:48Bible images of fruit, the fruit of the
- 7:52tree, of the knowledge of good and evil
- 7:54in the Garden of Eden.
- 7:57So this is Genesis chapter two and chapter
- 7:59three.
- 8:01And just listen to these pieces that God's
- 8:03putting together, the architecture of love, the capacity
- 8:06for life.
- 8:07So actually, even back in chapter one, verse
- 8:0929, then God said, I give you every
- 8:12seed-bearing plant on the face of the
- 8:14whole earth and every tree that has fruit
- 8:16with seed in it.
- 8:18They will be yours for food.
- 8:21Then in chapter two, now the Lord God
- 8:25had planted a garden in the east in
- 8:26Eden and there he put the man he
- 8:28had formed.
- 8:29The Lord God made all kinds of trees
- 8:31grow out of the ground, trees that were
- 8:33pleasing to the eye and good for food.
- 8:36In the middle of the garden were the
- 8:37tree of life and the tree of the
- 8:39knowledge of good and evil.
- 8:41A river watering the garden flowed from Eden.
- 8:45And then in chapter three, as we talked
- 8:47about just in our last episode, now the
- 8:50serpent was more crafty than any of the
- 8:52wild animals.
- 8:54He said to the woman, did God really
- 8:55say you must not eat from any tree
- 8:58in the garden?
- 9:01Did God really say?
- 9:03The conversation continues.
- 9:05But then what does the woman notice?
- 9:07She notices that the fruit is desirable.
- 9:10Verse six, when the woman saw that the
- 9:12fruit of the tree was good for food
- 9:14and pleasing to the eye and also desirable
- 9:17for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate
- 9:20it.
- 9:20She also gave some to her husband who
- 9:22was with her and he ate it.
- 9:25Then the eyes of both of them were
- 9:27opened and they realized they were naked.
- 9:29So they sewed fig leaves together and made
- 9:31coverings for themselves.
- 9:34See, even in the architecture of the garden,
- 9:38God plants an option B.
- 9:41He plants something that they could choose instead
- 9:43of choosing God.
- 9:45Because that's necessary for love to be real,
- 9:48for intimacy to be real.
- 9:50If somebody chooses you but you're the only
- 9:52option, is that really special?
- 9:54No.
- 9:55But if somebody says, I am denying every
- 9:57other option, forsaking all others, to choose you.
- 10:02That's true love.
- 10:03That's true intimacy.
- 10:04And God gives Adam and Eve that option
- 10:07to choose A.
- 10:09But instead they listen to the serpent who
- 10:11says, is A really good enough?
- 10:14Did God really say?
- 10:17And that leads of course to sin, destruction,
- 10:22death, the opposite of life.
- 10:25James, the brother of Jesus, gives us an
- 10:28image of how this works using the metaphor
- 10:31of birth.
- 10:33This is in James chapter one.
- 10:34He says, when tempted, no one should say
- 10:36God is tempting me.
- 10:38For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor
- 10:40does he tempt anyone.
- 10:41But each person is tempted when they are
- 10:43dragged away by their own evil desire and
- 10:45enticed.
- 10:46Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth
- 10:49to sin.
- 10:50And sin, when it is full grown, gives
- 10:53birth to death.
- 10:55So just like there's a maturity of love,
- 10:57which is choosing the loved person and their
- 11:01good over and above any contrary desires you
- 11:04might have, there's also a maturity, so to
- 11:06speak, of sin, desire, temptation, which is when
- 11:11you let that temptation, that desire, grow, which
- 11:14is contrary and then yield to it.
- 11:17It gives birth to sin, which gives birth
- 11:19to death, the opposite of life.
- 11:23Because it's that capacity to choose the more
- 11:25superficial desire to doubt the goodness of God,
- 11:29to go our own way that leads to
- 11:31division, destruction, disunity, brokenness, hollowness, emptiness, sin leads
- 11:37to death in ourselves, in our relationships, in
- 11:42our world.
- 11:43But we worship a good news God.
- 11:46We worship a God who comes into the
- 11:48middle of that story and redeems it.
- 11:51And the metaphor of fruit kind of travels
- 11:53with us from the Garden of Eden through
- 11:56the rest of the holy scriptures and culminating
- 11:59even in the book of Revelation at the
- 12:01end.
- 12:01So I want to take a look at
- 12:02some of those moments and then tie them
- 12:03back to what's happening in Paul's letter to
- 12:06the Galatians.
- 12:07So there's this idea that God redeems his
- 12:10people by making a covenant with them, a
- 12:13covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, with Jacob, who
- 12:17becomes known as Israel.
- 12:19The people of Israel, the people of Abraham,
- 12:21are meant to be these emissaries of God's
- 12:23life, his creative goodness in the world.
- 12:27And there's hundreds of different passages that refer
- 12:29to this and give different textures and images
- 12:32for it.
- 12:32But one of those passages is in Isaiah
- 12:35chapter 27.
- 12:36And this gives us the fruit metaphor once
- 12:40again as part of God's plan for the
- 12:43whole world.
- 12:44So let me read this.
- 12:46In days to come Jacob will take root,
- 12:49Israel will bud and blossom and fill all
- 12:52the world with fruit.
- 12:56That is God's plan for the well-being
- 12:58of all creation is through Israel, through the
- 13:01people of Abraham, to fill all the world
- 13:05with fruit, to bring his kind of life,
- 13:08his kind of love, everywhere through his people.
- 13:13The bad news is that it turns out
- 13:15God's people are really bad at this and
- 13:16we know that from our own experience, how
- 13:18limited and flawed and how much we yield
- 13:21to temptation, to that voice of the serpent
- 13:24saying, did God really say?
- 13:27So what we need is someone who can
- 13:30be deeply inside that covenant, who can be
- 13:33Israel, who can be the people of God
- 13:36for the people of God.
- 13:38And that's exactly what we receive in Jesus
- 13:40Christ.
- 13:41And that's what Paul's getting at throughout the
- 13:43letter to the Galatians is how Jesus has
- 13:46fulfilled that call of the people of God
- 13:50to be a blessing for the whole world.
- 13:53So let me get to this in Galatians
- 13:56chapter 3 verses 13 and 14.
- 14:03Christ redeemed us from the curse of the
- 14:04law by becoming a curse for us, for
- 14:07it is written, cursed is everyone who is
- 14:09hung on a tree.
- 14:11He redeemed us in order that the blessing
- 14:13given to Abraham might come to the gentiles
- 14:15through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we
- 14:19might receive the promise of the Spirit.
- 14:23So there's a curse, that curse that came
- 14:25when sin entered the world through that first
- 14:27tree, the tree of the knowledge of good
- 14:29and evil.
- 14:30But then on the cross of Christ Jesus
- 14:33is hung on a tree and he redeems
- 14:36that curse by becoming a curse for us.
- 14:40He redeemed us in order that the blessing
- 14:42given to Abraham might come to the gentiles
- 14:45through Christ Jesus.
- 14:47That purpose of God to bring his life
- 14:49and love through the people of Israel now
- 14:51comes to all peoples, all the gentiles, all
- 14:54the nations of the earth through Christ Jesus,
- 14:57so that by faith whoever puts their faith
- 15:00in Jesus as Messiah can enter into this,
- 15:02so that by faith we might receive the
- 15:05promise of the Spirit, that promise that God
- 15:07has been making throughout the holy scriptures, that
- 15:09promise that fruit will fill the whole earth
- 15:11that is now given to everyone who puts
- 15:14their faith in Jesus Christ, so that by
- 15:17faith we might receive the promise of the
- 15:20Spirit.
- 15:21And Jesus accomplishes this redemption as love, as
- 15:27God's love for us, as life, as God's
- 15:31life for us.
- 15:33Way Paul puts it in one chapter earlier,
- 15:35Galatians 2, verse 20.
- 15:38I have been crucified with Christ and I
- 15:40no longer live, but Christ lives in me.
- 15:43The life I now live in the body,
- 15:45I live by faith in the Son of
- 15:47God, who loved me and gave himself for
- 15:51me.
- 15:53What is love?
- 15:54What is the deepest maturity of love?
- 15:56It's choosing the loved person and their good
- 15:59over and above any contrary desires you might
- 16:02have.
- 16:03That's what Jesus did for us.
- 16:05On the cross he chose us.
- 16:09He died for us over and above all
- 16:12of his desires not to go through that
- 16:15experience.
- 16:17And that's what leads to life, the life
- 16:19I now live in the body, I live
- 16:21by faith in the Son of God, who
- 16:23loved me and gave himself for me.
- 16:27See, at that level of maturity, that level
- 16:29of openness to the other, that level of
- 16:33obedience to God, there's no distinction between love
- 16:36and life.
- 16:37That kind of love is the fullest kind
- 16:39of life.
- 16:41That's the kind of life that we are
- 16:43called to, that we can enter into because
- 16:46of Jesus, because the Holy Spirit comes to
- 16:49us.
- 16:50The fruit of the Spirit is love.
- 16:55And that's a love that's meant to fill
- 16:57the whole world.
- 16:58So just as Jesus is God's love for
- 17:01us, we can become God's love for the
- 17:04world in the Holy Spirit.
- 17:07The fruit of the Spirit is love.
- 17:11We become people who are willing to prefer
- 17:14the good of others, even above and over
- 17:17our own contrary desires.
- 17:18We become the kind of people who can
- 17:20always choose A for the sake of someone
- 17:22else.
- 17:23We become the kind of people who are
- 17:24free to live a life of love for
- 17:26God and others, rather than yielding to the
- 17:29superficial temptations of the flesh.
- 17:31We know and experience that the only thing
- 17:34that counts is faith working through love.
- 17:37And that becomes our real experience over time
- 17:39as we continue to interact with God.
- 17:41We make his love known in the world.
- 17:46In days to come, Jacob will take root.
- 17:49Israel will bud and blossom and fill all
- 17:52the world with fruit.
- 17:54This will happen.
- 17:55This is happening.
- 17:57This is something you can personally experience and
- 18:01participate in.
- 18:04And that might raise the question of how,
- 18:05how is this even possible for broken, humble,
- 18:11limited creatures like us?
- 18:15Well, think about how it works for a
- 18:17tree.
- 18:19Think about how it works for the simplest
- 18:22plant, doing photosynthesis with its leaves.
- 18:25Where does that power for life come from?
- 18:28It doesn't come from within the plant.
- 18:30It comes from a star 93 million miles
- 18:36away.
- 18:38But that star has such immense power it
- 18:41can produce so much light that even traveling
- 18:46at the speed of light takes eight minutes
- 18:48and 20 seconds to get from the sun
- 18:50to earth.
- 18:52But that is so reliable, so powerful, so
- 18:56consistent, so steady.
- 18:58But that sunlight gets all the way through
- 19:01those miles of space, all the way through
- 19:04our atmosphere, all the way down to that
- 19:07outstretched leaf of the plant and touches it
- 19:11and it receives life.
- 19:16So now let's turn to one of the
- 19:18last places in scripture where we see that
- 19:20life coming into bloom for the whole world.
- 19:25Then the angel showed me the river of
- 19:27the water of life as clear as crystal,
- 19:29flowing from the throne of God and the
- 19:31lamb down the middle of the great street
- 19:33of the city.
- 19:34On each side of the river stood the
- 19:36tree of life, bearing 12 crops of fruit,
- 19:39yielding its fruit every month.
- 19:41And the leaves of the tree are for
- 19:43the healing of the nations.
- 19:45No longer will there be any curse.
- 19:47The throne of God and of the lamb
- 19:49will be in the city and his servants
- 19:50will serve him.
- 19:51They will see his face and his name
- 19:54will be on their foreheads.
- 19:56There will be no more night.
