- 0:59Welcome back where we think differently daily.
- 1:01What's up, Different thinkers? Cool video.
- 1:04I want to do a video on relationships because I get a
- 1:06lot of questions from people asking about relationships and
- 1:10what does it all mean and yadda yadda.
- 1:11And so I was like, okay, I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll do
- 1:13for you all the autism relationships.
- 1:16Okay. So let's just clear something
- 1:17up. That Asperger syndrome is now
- 1:19actually called just Autism Spectrum disorder.
- 1:21Asperger Syndrome was moved into the Autumn Spectrum Disorder
- 1:24umbrella because Asperger syndrome was an unusual term to
- 1:27use when it's just autism and makes life just a lot easier.
- 1:31OK, so I am in a relationship. I've been in a relationship with
- 1:34my girlfriend now for like 11 years, almost 12 years, and we
- 1:37have a son and and everything. We live together and stuff like
- 1:39that. And so I thought it'd be really
- 1:40cool video to do a video talking about reasons why autism
- 1:44relationships can be hard and with like 3-3 kind of like facts
- 1:47and stuff about why it'll be hard.
- 1:49Because if I feel like if we know why relationships can be
- 1:51challenging and difficult, then we may be able to create these
- 1:55solutions for it or at least see the error in our ways.
- 1:58If that makes sense. I don't know.
- 1:59So hopefully this video it resonates with you.
- 2:01If it does, please give this video a thumbs up.
- 2:04Let me know If you like this type of video, that'd be super
- 2:06awesome. And if you have anything to add,
- 2:07just pop in a comment down below because I read every single
- 2:11comment and that would be super, super dope.
- 2:12Okay cool. So the first one is emotional
- 2:15communication issues. Now, people on the autism
- 2:17spectrum have major issues with communicating their emotions and
- 2:21their feelings to another person, you know.
- 2:24And this creates a lot of difficulties, especially when
- 2:26you're in romantic relationships, because a
- 2:29relationship needs to be open and that flow of communication
- 2:32needs to stay open and you need to express how you feel about
- 2:36things and how they feel about things back to you because you
- 2:39need to understand each other. It's it's part of, you know, a
- 2:42relationship and who you are in that relationship and that
- 2:44relationship as a whole. So in terms of people in the
- 2:47autism spectrum, because autism is a communication issue, it
- 2:51impacts the brain and the brain's ability to communicate
- 2:53with certain things around them. It is a difficult thing for
- 2:57people in the autism spectrum to deal with.
- 2:59And so how they communicate their emotions may be completely
- 3:02vastly different to the average person or the typical person who
- 3:05says, oh, you know, I'm feeling like this, blah blah, blah.
- 3:08It's difficult for people in the autism spectrum to do this.
- 3:10So I feel like this is probably one of like the number one
- 3:12reason why there may be tension of, you know, unknown tension
- 3:16within relationships with people in the autism spectrum.
- 3:18Because just knowing what the other person is emotionally
- 3:22feeling at the moment in time, not being able to communicate,
- 3:24that could be quite distressing. And if you know what I mean,
- 3:26Like, you know, it could be quite difficult.
- 3:28So yeah, there's the first one. OK, so #2 is empathy.
- 3:32Now, I'm not saying that autistic people don't have
- 3:34empathy, but in the the, the format and the text that I'm
- 3:38talking about here, the ability to understand how another person
- 3:40is feeling like putting yourself in their shoes is difficult for
- 3:44someone on the autism spectrum to get just like that.
- 3:47Because a lot of people say to to typical people would say,
- 3:51think about how the other person's feeling.
- 3:53Put yourself in their shoes and somebody could just do it like
- 3:55that really, really quickly just by thinking about their
- 3:57situation. But people on the autism
- 3:59spectrum don't have that ability to instantly just think about
- 4:02that other person's situation from their point of view of
- 4:04their perspective. It has to kind of be something
- 4:07that you take a little bit of time to understand the nurture,
- 4:09that that thought process and think about it.
- 4:11So having empathy for other people's feelings in certain
- 4:15moments and certain situations within relationships is
- 4:18difficult and can cause excessive tension.
- 4:20Because if someone's upset about something that you've done, then
- 4:22you would never be able to understand why they're upset
- 4:24about it. If you can't place yourself in
- 4:26their life on their shoes or their situation for a certain
- 4:29amount of time, right, you get what I'm on about.
- 4:31So This is why I find that having you know, empathy issues
- 4:35within a relationship can cause a lot of stress.
- 4:37But there are ways around it. I guess you could just tell a
- 4:40person to explain to you how they feel and then they would be
- 4:43able to tell you how they feel rather than having to guess from
- 4:45being in their shoes. Because, you know, it is
- 4:47difficult for people to do and some obvious reasons.
- 4:49Relationships can be hard for anybody if they're having
- 4:52difficulties with empathy in that kind of respect.
- 4:54Now #3 is an interesting one. This is short term memory.
- 4:58Now look, it's no new finding that people in the autism
- 5:01spectrum have like memory issues, right?
- 5:03And short term memory issues. They have really good like long
- 5:05term memory. But short term memory issues are
- 5:07really common within autism spectrum.
- 5:09Now this can cause huge issues within a relationship when
- 5:13trying to remember small things that make relationships a
- 5:16working partnership. Like maybe you forget that your
- 5:19partner likes the the remote control, also the TV in a
- 5:22certain area and then you'll forget about that.
- 5:24Or they say can you just remember to switch that light
- 5:26off before going out. But because the shots of
- 5:27everything you forget and these small things could upset them
- 5:30because they said like, hey could you do this for me?
- 5:31And then you didn't, but not on purpose.
- 5:33You're not trying to upset them, but it's just that you did it
- 5:35because you have shots of memory issues.
- 5:37Like I've come across this many a time and it is annoying and I
- 5:40wish I didn't have shots of memory issues.
- 5:42I wish I could just be like, oh okay cool, this is awesome.
- 5:44But it doesn't always work like that.
- 5:46And because of that, because of those issues, I feel like
- 5:48there's a lot of tension that gets put into people's
- 5:50relationships. You know when you when you're on
- 5:52the autism spectrum and you have just these three factors, I
- 5:55mean, this is just a small snapshot.
- 5:56These are just three factors of why relationship is difficult
- 5:58for people in the autism spectrum.
- 5:59When you add in relationships in general, your own stuff going on
- 6:02life, you get your work, you've got maybe school stuff, it just
- 6:04becomes this whole thing like this.
- 6:06It can be difficult, but don't give up on it.
- 6:09It doesn't mean that relationships are going to fail
- 6:11just because there's issues in relationship.
- 6:13Not at all. I'm doing is highlighting where
- 6:15areas that could be improved upon.
- 6:16I'm not highlighting areas to say that this is doomed.
- 6:18Not at all. Relationships can be strong and
- 6:20all those people who are married, children and you know,
- 6:24you know, all kinds of different relationships that autistic
- 6:27people are in and they have great relationships and they've
- 6:29married for years and years and it's absolutely fine.
- 6:31There's no issues there. There's nothing, there's nothing
- 6:33goes against it. I mean, you can't do it.
- 6:35It just means that this a fact of the matter.
- 6:38Now. If you think that this video can
- 6:39help somebody, please share it on Facebook, Twitter and
- 6:41Instagram and give it a thumbs up.
- 6:43Leave me a comment if you'd like to add anything and I'll see you
- 6:46guys in the next one.
