- 0:48SPEAKER_01: I am Comedy Wood and am thrilled and grateful that you've taken a few moments out of your day to spend with me.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Over the course of the last few episodes, we've been discussing how we cultivate happiness.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: And this really became a topic of importance, or I feel that it's a topic of importance because over the course of the past, I'd say a few weeks, a few months, a lot of people that I've been talking to have really been yearning for this concept of just being happy.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: But I hear it in the context of I'll be happy when I get that promotion, or I'll be happy when I find the right partner.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: And so there's this concept of the happiness is external to us as people.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: And it's really important to recognize that true happiness starts from within.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: It's an inside-out job.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: When we are consistently thinking that happiness needs to come from an external source, it's from that place that we end up constantly, it feels like we're striving for it and we can never quite attain it because we don't control those external forces.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: It's about how do we cultivate those things from within.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: So we talked about things like being more mindful, being present in the moment.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: We talked about things like adding a gratitude practice in, you know, gratitude is the foundation for that positivity and raising the vibration level.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: We talked about letting go of comparisons.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: There's another one that we kind of have to let go of, and that's letting go of perfectionism.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: You know, having a clear idea of you know where you want to be in your life can definitely increase the chances of success because it's true that when we set an intention for ourselves, we set goals and intentions, and they're realistic goals, we are working towards something and we are able to continually um set those parameters for setting ourselves up to reach those goals.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: And I and I will often say that setting an intention is very important because we're bringing to our awareness what it is that we're working towards.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: However, when we live in the concept of perfectionism, and I know this very well because I routinely will call myself out for being a recovering, people-pleasing perfectionist, that is, the the concept of perfectionism or that it has to be perfect and done absolutely right definitely has its roots in that whole concept of not good enough, you know, that lack of that lack of self-esteem or that false belief that what I do is not good enough and can cause anxiety.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: So that awareness that you that you are not ever really going to be content because it has to be perfect causes and leads to unhappiness.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: It it creates this this pattern of dissatisfaction.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: So perfectionism then ends up pushing you to these unrealistically high standards or unrealistically high expectations or even expectations, again, that are external from you because you're living to some external validation and you continually keep working towards it.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: But because perfection doesn't truly exist, you know, I often say that perfection doesn't exist, evolution and the growth, the consistent growth is what we need to live into.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: We keep killing our chances at happiness.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: So if you really want to cultivate this concept of happiness, cultivate a habit of happiness, being okay with learning, being okay with growing.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: It's not that you're settling.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying be okay with mediocre.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: That's not what I'm saying at all.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: It's just really honing into this concept of it's not about getting it perfect.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: It's about the growth mindset.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: It's about what can I lean into?
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: What haven't I learned how to do yet?
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: What can I continue to work on and keep evolving at?
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: And so it's about adjusting our expectations from being perfect or getting it absolutely right into um even as I reach for my goals, even as I try to attain things that I haven't gotten down yet, I'm accepting of the flaws, I'm accepting of the mistakes in the sense that I'm going to learn from them rather than judge myself for them.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: And that's what I mean by stepping into a growth mindset versus perfectionism.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: It's about recognizing that your skills can continue to improve with effort and time.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: And when we do this, it empowers us to actually switch our perception of obstacles into chances for growth.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: So instead of seeing them as an obstacle that we can't overcome, we now look at them, oh, that's an opportunity for growth and allows for that continual work on our own personal development and our own postpersonal growth, which in essence leads to being able to cultivate this happiness.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Because if we don't, if we consistently hold on to this concept of perfectionism, we set ourselves up for consistent dissatisfaction.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: And that is the antithesis to cultivating happiness.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: So today I would challenge you to just slow it down and observe yourself.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: Are there moments where you, that self-talk is about, oh my gosh, I've got to get this right?
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: And if I don't get it right or perfect, it's not good.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: And it's asking ourselves, even if this isn't perfect, is it good enough for now?
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: Even if this is not perfect, did I learn something from the flaws or from the mistakes I made along the way?
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Can I take that newfound knowledge and apply it and move forward and continue to grow forward from this place?
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: And so it's about slowing it down.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: So partially it's about getting more mindful, being more present, but it's about can I let go of this concept of perfectionism?
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: So try that today and see if you're able to let go of it has to be absolutely perfect and lean into what did I learn and what am I continuing to learn.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Until next time, I'm Comedy Wood.
