Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: must it actually, is it what you do when you don't know what you're doing?
- 0:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's how you figure it out.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the Beat Till You See at Podcast, where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_01]: I'm also Logan, Ply's instructor and fitness business coach.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_01]: I've trained thousands of people around the world, and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_01]: My friends, action brings clarity.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_01]: And it's the antidote to fear.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_01]: Each week my guests will bring bold, executable, intrinsic, and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and be it till you see it.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's a practice, not a perfect, let's get started.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: All right, be a big welcome back to the beat till you see it podcast, oh, where we do take messy action and have just seven hundred episodes.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_01]: I hit my elbow on the thing.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's perfect for the topic today because my goodness, if you think you're supposed to be perfect at a 700 episodes, you are mistaken because you are a human being.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a human being.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_01]: And we are all over here to try the best we can.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_01]: And if that's all you take away from this episode, that is enough.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_01]: But we are on our messy action theme.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: So on Tuesday, if you didn't listen to episode, we talked about stuck and how that can affect you taking action.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: And we had a theme two or three weeks ago, maybe more, on what's keeping you stuck.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_01]: And so the reality is that there's a lot of different things and keep a stuck.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: And we here are often the reason why.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: We are often the one that gets in our own way.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: We believe it on other people, but it's typically usually us.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's our nervous system.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's our protection mode.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's our fear of responsibility, failure, judgment, all the things.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_01]: So I want to talk about how messy action is a strategy.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's not just throwing things to the wall and seeing what sticks, although Pat can't be hit.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's actually more of like,
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: mantra, you know, to get you to take the first next step.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not a backup plan.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's not a last resort.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: I really think that's important to say because most plans don't go the way that you expect.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: But if you have this idea of like it doesn't have any perfect, I just have to keep the next step going.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: Then you will actually realize that you're not on a plan B or C, you're just working the first plan.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: and following it with the momentum that it's getting right fall in the flow of the river.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: If a river hits a rock, it's a go up, I must stop.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: Goes around the rock, right?
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: It goes on the next thing.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: It creates a grand canyon so it keeps going where it wants to go.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: So it really, truly messy action is the way forward.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: I love this messy action.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: Is it what you do when you don't know what you're doing?
- 2:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's how you figure it out.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's not what you do when you don't know what you're doing.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's how you figure it out.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: So instead of us like, it's like reframing, like, I don't know what to do here.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: So let's just throw this at the wall and see what happens.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: No, I gotta figure out what I gotta do, so let me try this over here.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's an experiment, right?
- 2:45[SPEAKER_00]: If you skip ahead to the lovely intro, I like to listen the intro on 1.5 speed.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not gonna lie.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: I can use it that fast.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: But the until you see it is identity through action.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: That's what it is.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's acting as if there's a really good book called The As If Theory.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_01]: And so if you act as if, then someday you would just become the as you would just become the person.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_01]: You want to be, because you're practicing being that person.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_01]: You're filtering things and decisions through the person you want to be.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_01]: What would that person do if I was already that person?
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: As opposed to waiting, which we already talked about in the last episode how waiting it's exhausting.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's annoying is frustrating.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_01]: So, messy action is really just normalizing imperfection.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_01]: It means starting with 50%, 25% of the plan in mind, like you know what the destination is.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: You don't really know the steps right before it, but you know that if you take these steps right here, you might get there.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of like when they went off to see the wizard, they're like, it's that way.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_01]: And they didn't know that there was a forest of apples and a bunch of monkeys, so they were going to, but they could see, in the distance, and they could see the road, right in front of them, and that's what they did.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: right like that's what starting with messy action is.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: It is posting before you think that the post is actually perfect because I'll actually tell you that social media doesn't care for it's perfect.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's actually a waste of time just put things up there.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: It is learning in real time.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: You get to be a learner.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: I'm still learning Pilates and I've been teaching for 20 years.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm still learning.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's trying things out and adjusting as you have more information.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: that's taking messy action because having the perfect plan, let me tell you things change, you know, we taught at EDC, let me tell you how much of that they had figured out, like to the T, who has what radio, like, who has what wristband, which wristband can go and what, like, everything was well thought out.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_01]: And then the weather says we over 100 degrees.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, we've got mysteries.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, now the weather's going to be 56 degrees, and the wind is going to go freaking crazy.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: You can plan everything to a T and then the wind blows.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: So it's actually learning in real time.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, what can I do, what can I do, what can I do?
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we always talk about how if you want to support this podcast, you should be at OPC member.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: At OPC, we actually tell you it's brave and courageous to replace what you can't do yet with something you can do.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: And in doing that, you're constantly asking yourself, okay, what can I do, what can I do, what can I do, I can't do this, what can I do instead?
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: When you have that as a muscle in your brain, it allows you to take messy action more quickly, more easily and just try it out.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that was actually too hard for you today.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that was actually exactly what I needed.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: Great, now you know.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: messy action is not being reckless.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's being real.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's doing what needs to be done right now.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: And it definitely gets ruined if you're trying to be perfect.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: So, okay, I've told this right before, but I don't have to hold this context and maybe you're knowing you haven't heard it.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: So in 2018, early 2018, I realized I needed to open my own studio.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: I never thought I would, didn't really want to.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_01]: I like the freedom of rentane, but that freedom was getting hampered because the studio was getting busier.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: And so for me to film and record my tutorials, I had to go later and later at night.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like the evening.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: I was having a hard time recording at home because one I only had room for the mat.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: And two, they were doing construction all day long.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: Like, oh, they'll.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: And it was just really annoying to constantly move our furniture around in our studio apartment.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: So I could film and I wanted to add reformer classes.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: And so if I wanted to add reformer classes, I need to open my own studio.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: So I thought I had this like perfect plan.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: I knew the location I wanted.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_01]: I ordered the equipment that I wanted.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: I had the perfect move in date.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: I told the studio that was being run by some friends of mine.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_01]: When I was going to leave, I was like, you know, let me stay until it's time to my equipment arrives.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: And guess what?
- 6:21[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't get to wait until my equipment arrived.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't like that.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_01]: And so luckily, I had the keys to the space.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: We'd hung some stuff on the wall and I texted all of my clients, hey, we're gonna be here tomorrow, starting tomorrow.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: This is so exciting.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: Here's where you're gonna come.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_01]: And on the first day, I didn't have a trash can.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: Didn't even have a trash can for them.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, where do I put this paper towel and I'm like, oh, right over there.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: Just in that box, I'm going to go get a trash can on my next break.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: How so borrowed a reformer from a friend and I borrowed a pedopole from a friend.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: I was just asking people, like, hey, what extra things do you have while I wait for my stuff to show up?
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: And then every day, Brad and I would try to put this to you more and more together in a bedbath and beyond up with my coupons and got the things that I need to got a fan, got a trash can, got my weighted for a chair to come, took forever.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_01]: So it was frustrating, right?
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: Because I wanted my clients to move into this perfect studio.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Guess what?
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: They actually love being part of the evolution.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_01]: They actually thought it was fun to see every time they came in, what new things we've done to the studio, what new equipment had arrived, what pieces had arrived.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_01]: And so yeah, I was embarrassed that I wasn't able to finish out my time at the other studio.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: But if I had let that drive the decisions I was making, I would not have been able to see what to light.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: My clients took in being part of the journey, being part of the creation.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_01]: Letting me know, oh, I like that over there.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, actually, let's put the, what if you try that over there?
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: It was so fun to let them help me decorate.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_01]: So...
- 7:53[SPEAKER_01]: It was actually one of the coolest things that ever happened and I'm really grateful because my clients actually got really excited about the pitiful because I got had to use pitiful for 30 minutes because that's all we had, you know, it was just a lot of fun.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I would have missed out on that memory and that challenge and how it made my brain have to like force itself to be creative in that situation so.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_01]: How do you do that?
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: What what what would help you take messy action will make the next step smaller.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: Can you do it in two minutes.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_01]: Make it one step only.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not like, oh, I got to build my website with messy action.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_01]: No, I need to order by the URL.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I need to look at platforms that I can run on website.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I need to choose a platform that I like, oh, actually, before I do that, I need to compare the platforms, right?
- 8:44[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what do I want them to do?
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: Like, don't put build your website on your daily task because that's too overwhelming.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: Can I make it fun, right?
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: So this is my ADHD people, put music on, add movement to it, set a timer.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: Right, I love a timer.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: I have a little kitchen timer on my desk and it's really helpful for me when I'm feeling stuck and I just need to take action.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, okay, I only have to work on this for the next 15 minutes, right?
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: And that really helps me just get going because I only have 15 minutes, so I'm just gonna be best I can.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: I would also say, like, remove the planning loops.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: You probably have planned enough already.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_01]: Take the first step in your plan.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: But if taking an action just feels too big, it's because it's too big.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: So you got to make it as small as possible.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_01]: Go back to our habit series if you want to understand what that means and why that's important.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, especially for my people who need the dopamine high to keep going.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: Got to make it small.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_01]: Got to make it achievable.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_01]: The other thing I would say is, make sure you're doing nervous system checks.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, are you breathing?
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: You start to hold your breath while you're thinking about doing something.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of fear that we got to breathe through it.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be really hard to take action if we are holding our breath.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: And if your nervous system is feeling overloaded overwhelmed, say it out loud, it's really, really helpful.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like Brad and I'll be working on something.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes I'm like, oh my god, I'm just like, I'm having, I'm actually scared.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: I'm having too much emotion around this right now.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: And it really does help to call that out and to go, okay.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: Because why am I doing that?
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: What's the fear that I'm having there?
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: Is the fear that I'm having around this because I have fear of responsibility, fear of judgment, fear of failure?
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so what is coming up?
- 10:22[SPEAKER_01]: Because a lot of times it's just stuff that's in our head from our past experiences or like the way we were raised and we can get in our own way.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: And those things didn't even exist.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: We just made a story up.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: So, it's really important that you're doing an nervous system check that you have people around you that you can go, hey, I'm feeling a little overwhelmed right now.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_01]: Can I tell you what's going on?
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: And their job is not to be like, oh, you're fine.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: Their job is to go, sure, what's going on?
- 10:46[SPEAKER_01]: And then not give you 17 pieces of ice.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's reminding you to take messy action that you can do this.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: I was having a little anxiety getting ready for something.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_01]: I talked about this in an FYF.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: My husband's like, oh, that's called these.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: You feel like it's like, absolutely not.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_01]: those people are not going I love those people they're great people those people are not going to make me feel better in this situation they're going to make me feel more nervous so can't who else can we also he called someone else who screamed with joy and exclamation which really got me out of my head right so maybe the first thing you're going to do from your messy actions right down who do you call when you need a minor to take messy action
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: So this is a goatfully good or minor.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_01]: You're not forcing yourself into action.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_01]: You are supporting yourself into action.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: Now forcing yourself into messy action, you are supporting yourself into messy action.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know at this podcast, we really love to celebrate little wins, right?
- 11:37[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes I have a big win that we share, but typically they're like, we're in the process of something.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_01]: And so what's really important for me to help you understand when it comes to messy action, you have to build momentum, which means having a small win stack.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_01]: So every single day, what did you do that day that we can celebrate?
- 11:53[SPEAKER_01]: Because if we're waiting until you finish the project, like for example, build in the website, where are we waiting for our fucking long time, six to eight weeks at least, right?
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: Longer, if you don't know what you're doing.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: So how can we be like, I bought the URL and make that super fun and take people on the journey so they can share with you, right?
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: The momentum is built in moments, not masterpieces.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_01]: And so yes, it's really beautiful to look at the sculpture when it's done, but mostly sculptures take years to do.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_01]: And if artists only celebrated when it was done, like that's not the best way.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: I would say they need to celebrate along the way because it's going to make them enjoy the process.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to enjoy the process more.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: So this whole podcast is about being into you see it.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_01]: And the only way to be to see it is to act as if, which means you're not gonna know how to do it perfectly because you're not hurry yet.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: You're being to tell you see it to be who that person is.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: You don't know it is you're guessing.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_01]: And so the only way that we can do that is to take the messy action, take some action because it's the antidote for you.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's how we get clarity and if you really do think about, if you really do embody, be it till you see it, then you would be asking yourself, okay, the version of me that I want to be what would they be doing right now?
- 13:02[SPEAKER_01]: Well, they would be doing this thing.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, then I go to that thing.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: They wouldn't be scared of that, right?
- 13:06[SPEAKER_01]: For example, I remember when I was first trying the brands and I was just getting really overwhelmed by all that I had to do in all the decisions I had to make and I heard this person say CEOs don't put out every fire, they know which fire
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, oh, I'm a CEO of this company.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not now.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: Thank God.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: I am the Chief Poliz Officer.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: The CEO, Chief Visitor Officer.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: But at the time, I was.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's only employee for the company.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_01]: And as okay, I can't.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not supposed to put out every fire.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm supposed to know which fire is put out.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: So if I was a CEO, what fires would I know are the ones to put out?
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: And just by acting like I knew what I was doing as like, oh, it's this one over here.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_01]: That's the thing.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_01]: So you're just going to keep practicing with this whole podcast is up out.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: Do you tell you see it?
- 13:49[SPEAKER_01]: Ask that version of you.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: What would she do?
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: What action would she take?
- 13:53[SPEAKER_01]: She would be getting her own way.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know that.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: And here's a deal.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_01]: Every time you take action, you actually prove to yourself that you can do it.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: You teach yourself what's possible.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_01]: And that's how you build confidence.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's not by waiting.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: We do not build confidence through waiting.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_01]: In fact,
- 14:13[SPEAKER_01]: Chip away at our confidence every time we delay taking action on the thing we want to do.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: We do.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's how it works.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_01]: So my loves.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_01]: Now that we know you're not stuck and we know you're not unmotivated and we know you're not behind.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: You've just been waiting to feel ready.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: Waiting with a little fear.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: Waiting and tell things are perfect.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_01]: But we're not doing that anymore because the BOTC at version of you would take the messy action.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I want to know which action you're going to take, which are for the next step.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_01]: Send it into the beapod.com slash questions.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_01]: Send in what you're needing more advice and support on when it comes to be.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: It tells you see it what's a topic or an expert.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_01]: You need to hear from to help you know what next steps to take.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_01]: What's another subject we could do a solo episode on?
- 15:01[SPEAKER_01]: You asked me, we'll create a for you.
