- 0:09It's still some time before pro football will be back in the sports spotlight again.
- 0:14But let's take a change of pace and listen to a football story.
- 0:17The Green Bay Packers will be seeking an unprecedented third straight National Football League Championship next season.
- 0:23And league record-sharing, the Packers always had them in a football power.
- 0:27Let's return to 1941.
- 0:30The Packers needed one victory to clinch at least a tie for the Western title.
- 0:34The scene was Washington.
- 0:36And the Packers were a heavy choice to whip the Redskins.
- 0:39Green Bay had a passing combination that was setting a league on its head.
- 0:43Cecil Isbell to Don Hudson.
- 0:45The Redskins had quite a passing attack too.
- 0:48And the reason? A fellow named Sammy Ball.
- 0:51The game was only a few minutes old when the Redskins marched across the length of the field for a touchdown.
- 0:57Before the opening period was over, a field goal was added.
- 1:00And Washington fans smelled an upset in the making.
- 1:03The fans became even more convinced when Ball connected to Bob Seymour for another touchdown shortly before the half ended.
- 1:10At the intermission, the scoreboard showed the Redskins leading the Packers 17-0.
- 1:16The big Redskin line was sputtering Isbell.
- 1:18And the secondary was covering Hudson like a glove.
- 1:21But there was still a half to go.
- 1:23And anything can happen in a football game.
- 1:25Green Bay took the second half kickoff and returned it to the 35-yard line.
- 1:29Then Isbell started to fill the air with passes.
- 1:32Hudson caught one, then one to another receiver.
- 1:35The Packers moved goalward as Isbell fell to one target after another.
- 1:39Washington found itself with its back to his wall.
- 1:42The Packers had the ball and the Redskins 15.
- 1:44Isbell faded to pass.
- 1:46Spotted Hudson in the end zone and fired. Touchdown.
- 1:49The score was now Washington 17, Green Bay 7.
- 1:52A few minutes later, the Packers were threatening again.
- 1:55This time, an alert Green Bay defender had picked off one of Ball's passes.
- 1:59In a matter of seconds, the Packers were deep in Redskin territory.
- 2:02Again Isbell took to the air.
- 2:04And again he found Hudson clear.
- 2:06Touchdown.
- 2:07The Packers had inched to within three points of Washington at 17-13.
- 2:11But there was still a whole quarter to go.
- 2:13Moved back in 60 seconds for the exciting windup.
- 2:15Isbell filled the air with passes as the final period got underway.
- 2:19The Packers moved from deep in their own territory to the Redskin 46.
- 2:23Then Isbell fired to Hudson again.
- 2:25Donnie moved one defender after another.
- 2:28Then streak goalward.
- 2:30Green Bay had scored again.
- 2:32And took the lead for the first time, 21-17.
- 2:35It had taken Isbell and Hudson a while to warm up.
- 2:38But when they finally got started, there was no stopping them.
- 2:41They made up one of the greatest passing combinations in football league history.
