- 2:35Welcome to Aries Brewed podcast. My name is Lucas and we're going
- 2:41to be talking about one of my favorite films, one that I don't
- 2:47get that not many people may classify as a horror movie, but
- 2:56I I like to. I thought Jaws was a fishing
- 2:59movie. I, I, I, you know, some could
- 3:04some could certainly say that I I can, I can see the case being
- 3:07made, but but. Yeah, it's not, It's not filmed
- 3:13by Discovery Channel, right? Right.
- 3:17Is that shark week? Documentary.
- 3:24Yeah. So Jaws, it came out in 1975, a
- 3:31long, long time ago, and I remember.
- 3:40So I believe that everyone here has seen Jaws.
- 3:45I remember seeing it when I was when I was a kid.
- 3:48And if if I wasn't afraid of the ocean already from just
- 3:52jellyfish and you know, and all those little monsters.
- 3:56The ocean I was afraid of the bathtub shit.
- 4:03If you weren't afraid of the water already, you know, I think
- 4:07the the jaws, Jaws would do it for you.
- 4:11It it was absolutely terrifying and I don't know, do you all
- 4:15remember the the first time you saw Jaws and how'd you feel
- 4:20about it? Yeah, Jaws was definitely up
- 4:23there with the movie birds and arachnophobia.
- 4:27Like if you wanted, if you wanted fears, then you need to
- 4:30tune into movies in the early 80s to early 90s.
- 4:35That was the era where we were giving phobias.
- 4:38To anyone. Oh man, I I swear like I watched
- 4:45Arachnophobia so many times. Like we I I I wore out the tape
- 4:51like on our on our VHS player when I was a kid watching
- 4:54Arachnophobia. Yeah, and Pet Sematary.
- 4:57I still hate cats. Oh yeah, that'll do.
- 5:00I hate cats. Dogs I'm OK with.
- 5:02Cujo didn't do anything to me about dogs.
- 5:04I love dogs, but cats, they can go to hell.
- 5:08Right, cats are the devil. They're the.
- 5:10Devil. I've been allergic.
- 5:12To sucking bastards. Yeah, I I've been allergic to
- 5:17cats my entire life, so yeah, I needed no help there so.
- 5:23But. Well, so you know, so you know,
- 5:25Jaws actually came out in 1974, the book.
- 5:30And then a year later they they, they made the movie out of it.
- 5:34So it was that popular as a book that they converted to movie
- 5:37that fast. Yeah, he was telling me about
- 5:39that. He's like, have you ever played
- 5:41a game that had anything to do with the movie?
- 5:43And I'm like, well, I, I remember they made the board
- 5:46game Clue, and then they created the movie and a movie was just
- 5:50boring. Clue.
- 5:54Clue. Yeah.
- 5:55Yeah, my, my beef with Clue is just the fact that you get
- 5:59everything at the very end of the film.
- 6:02Now, if we were following a lot of these facts, you know, like
- 6:05up to a conclusion, then that would be interesting.
- 6:08But but that's my, my, my big beef with with Clue is just all
- 6:12the exposition at the end. It's just, yeah, it's just a
- 6:19Curie, you know, Tim Curry, you know, just summing up everything
- 6:23at the end, which didn't like, no, no, didn't like that at all.
- 6:30But especially for like a like a murder mystery, you know, like I
- 6:34I was kind of hoping, you know, that we kind of get there and
- 6:38kind of like piece it together ourselves, but that's just
- 6:40impossible. The the the movie is just
- 6:43convoluted as hell. So but but yeah, so so Jaws has
- 6:55like you mentioned earlier, it was it was originally a book
- 6:59Peter Benchley wrote this this book that was wildly successful
- 7:04actually. Like it is even one of our fun
- 7:08little Jaws facts. Actually, go ahead and put up
- 7:12our Jaws fact I believe is. OK, so the the number one Jaws
- 7:18fact is Jaws was released in 1975, was the first film to be
- 7:24released on a massive scale in 400 plus theaters and the first
- 7:29US film to gross over $100 million.
- 7:33It it was the first blockbuster. Yep, Yep.
- 7:37Wow, $100 million now would be considered a fail and a broke
- 7:42movie. I know, right?
- 7:44That that it'd be considered a Disney movie.
- 7:48That's the new Snow White. Right.
- 7:56So I, I believe there's one about Peter Benchley.
- 8:01I want to say it's #3 maybe I don't know, but but yeah.
- 8:09So, so yes, Jaws was a book and that was on the best sellers
- 8:18list for 44 weeks. And, and then, you know,
- 8:25blockbuster film and then about six years ago, then this board
- 8:32game hit the hit the market. And I don't know if you've ever
- 8:39played a board game that is based on a movie or based on,
- 8:43you know, much of anything. You know, it's, it's not
- 8:47something that's that's all that popular or or or or no, I
- 8:52shouldn't say popular because it is popular unfortunately, but
- 8:56it's just not executed all that well and.
- 9:02So, so how do you, how do you, how do you play like when you,
- 9:07when you first start up, I, I'm sure you had needle.
- 9:10I have 3 or 4 players like Monopoly.
- 9:13You, you, you give everybody like money and stuff.
- 9:15What? What does everybody start up
- 9:17with on us? So, so Jaws is, you know, is
- 9:22great in that. Well, I mean it's you know, it's
- 9:25three guys and a shark, you know, So you got Hooper, you got
- 9:29Quint, you got Brody, and then you got the shark.
- 9:32And so the shark player is trying to eat up as many
- 9:39swimmers as possible and and everybody else is trying to save
- 9:46as many swimmers as possible. And they all have unique powers.
- 9:52They all have you unique abilities.
- 9:54And so while the Jaws character, you know, is kind of is, is kind
- 10:01of so this is what what's called kind of like a a hidden movement
- 10:06game. And so the the shark player has
- 10:12a little shark tracker and they're.
- 10:16A little fun fact for you, for this shark player.
- 10:19Oh yeah. Shark by the crew of the movie
- 10:22was called Bruce, named after Steven Spielberg's lawyer.
- 10:28So the mechanical the mechanical Jaws was named Bruce.
- 10:33You're stealing my my. I need to put my list away.
- 10:38I should. Put my list OK.
- 10:40You're good, Amber. It's.
- 10:41All good. So, but yeah, so the jaw, the
- 10:48the shark character kind of has like this little, little full
- 10:54shark tracker there that they are finding.
- 10:57And basically like you just kind of document, you know, on your
- 11:01turn, you know, where you are, you know, kind of like as you
- 11:05move about, you know, like this board and and so shark, you
- 11:09know, kind of goes, goes first in, in that manner.
- 11:14And then everybody else is basically just trying to find
- 11:17the shark and they're trying to they're trying to find the shark
- 11:20and they're trying to slap a barrel on him.
- 11:22So like anybody who may be familiar with the the film,
- 11:26you've got these, these these little, little barrels, you
- 11:32know? Oh yeah.
- 11:34That you're trying to pin on the shark now the only person who
- 11:38can do this is Quint. So so you want you know, like,
- 11:43you know, Quint to be kind of like the last person to go and
- 11:47hopefully Brody and Hooper like will be able to find where where
- 11:53this the shark character is. And so then now they've got,
- 12:01they've got 4 actions. And so then you, you start, you
- 12:07know, like, you know, like every turn.
- 12:10So with a, with a Amityville event, you know, and so these
- 12:16are just kind of like things that are happening.
- 12:19So Mayor Vaughn steps in and what does Mayor Vaughn step in
- 12:23to do? So So then what you do is, yeah,
- 12:27you place swimmers. And so we got so I need 2 in the
- 12:33North Beach and then like 2 in the South Beach, one in the east
- 12:43and one in the West. Oh, except not him now.
- 12:48So this is kind of a fun, fun fact of the film.
- 12:51You see this little +2 on this guy.
- 12:53So this is Michael. Now, Michael is Brody's son.
- 12:57And so only a card kind of like brings him into play.
- 13:01Kind of a kind of a fun little little detail in the game.
- 13:06But but yeah, So if you take yeah.
- 13:10So, so then if Michael, you know, like kind of comes into
- 13:14play, then that basically gives more motivation, you know, like
- 13:18for Brody to save his son basically, you know, and and and
- 13:25then also it kind of increases blah, blah, blah, No the.
- 13:32Z must say hit the wrong button. Hey, while Z is gone, I think we
- 13:38might have a troll. They want to know if you're from
- 13:40Minnesota because you have an accent, no.
- 13:47Born and born and raised in Denver.
- 13:50So. But no, I I mean, I wish I was.
- 14:00Have you ever seen them the film Fargo, one of my favorite movies
- 14:05of all time. Oh my God, takes place in
- 14:07Minnesota and it's and if it's not in Minnesota, it's somewhere
- 14:14it's somewhere close. But they've just have like this
- 14:18ridiculous, don't you know, accent that is amazing.
- 14:26But. MIDI Island?
- 14:28I wonder if they got that from the MIDI whorehouse.
- 14:32So it is loosely related because it's I'm trying to to recall,
- 14:41but it's like around like the New Jersey area that's but it's,
- 14:47it's completely complete fake, you know, but.
- 14:53And Amber says North Dakota North.
- 14:55Dakota. Fargo.
- 14:57Fargo was Minnesota. I think somebody's leading us
- 15:03astray. Yeah.
- 15:04No, it's it's it was based out of Minnesota.
- 15:08I'm almost yeah, that that's what I.
- 15:11Thought and actually no. And actually North Dakota as
- 15:13well. Grand, fortunately.
- 15:16I don't know but that region so but but yeah, Fargo.
- 15:24Fargo is a great movie actually. Yeah.
- 15:27Fargo, ND. Then they then they became a
- 15:29bank. Wells Fargo.
- 15:30If we're going to make up lines, let's go all the way so.
- 15:42But but yeah, so you know, each player, you know, just kind of
- 15:46like has like their their, you know, their identity, you know,
- 15:50that that they play as they all have different abilities.
- 15:53They're all trying to find the shark, you know, in their own
- 15:58way. And and then, and then
- 16:05ultimately, you know, Quint, you know, will then pin like these,
- 16:09these two little barrels on him. And, and so by the end of like
- 16:17the, the, the first act, then you have figured out, you know,
- 16:22like how many swimmers you know that the shark has eaten, you
- 16:27know, and, and so then this then decides how many, how many crew
- 16:36cards and how many shark ability cards that, that the players
- 16:43will have in Act 2. And Act 2 we'll get into a bit
- 16:48later. But so yeah, we'll, we'll just
- 16:54dwell on Act 1 here. 1st So how do you figure out act 2?
- 16:58Is that like how many times around the circle?
- 17:01There you go. No, so, so once, like all of
- 17:06the, so once the two barrels have been put, you know, on the
- 17:10shark, you know, pin pinned on the shark and, and then or once
- 17:19all of the, the swimmers, you know, have been eaten up, then
- 17:26then that's when you advance to Act 2.
- 17:28And and so, yeah, the then and, and then you, you then toss the
- 17:41board, you know, perhaps even in frustration, I don't know, but
- 17:45but then you turn over to the the board and then you build Act
- 17:492. And so, so we'll get, we'll get
- 17:53into that, you know, like a bit later.
- 17:56But but yeah, but but it's, it's just great how this game
- 18:06articulates the the movie so well.
- 18:11Like for one, you know, just the the fact that you've got like
- 18:15this, you know, hidden movement. I mean, so the, the mechanical
- 18:19shark in, in Jaws was largely just, you know, malfunctioning
- 18:25for most of the film. And so they had to be creative
- 18:30and just went with like a first person point of view, you know,
- 18:33like like for, for Jaws and, and just really found a way, you
- 18:40know, to, to make it work without the shark.
- 18:44And so now, like almost all of the footage that we see of the,
- 18:49of the mechanical shark in the film are what they had.
- 18:53I mean, like they, they pretty much used all the footage that
- 18:56they that they had of the shark and, and it was really, you
- 19:02know, like only functional for, you know, like the the last part
- 19:08of the of the film. And, and that's really when they
- 19:11needed it. That's, that's really when you
- 19:14needed it. You know that that last 10
- 19:17minutes of the film, really. Now this setup is neat.
- 19:21Now did did it come with the shells and the?
- 19:24Oh, no, no. Oh, OK.
- 19:26I was going to say, yeah, I mean, they really did outdid
- 19:29themselves. No.
- 19:31OK. So, you know, not sure if I'm
- 19:34jumping the gun on any of your trivia, but the reason the shark
- 19:38wasn't in the first movie as much was because it kept
- 19:41breaking. And then the audience actually
- 19:43thought that that added more mystery and scariness 'cause,
- 19:46you know, you're always more scared of the things you don't
- 19:49see. Like my kids are scared of the
- 19:50dark. There's nothing in the dark.
- 19:51What are you scared of? So that's the thing with the
- 19:53with with Jaws. Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 20:02Yeah, so, so having that hidden movement in the game really, you
- 20:09know, really is a accurate depiction of the movie, you
- 20:14know, and, and also just the the motivation, you know, like of of
- 20:21Brody because you got you can potentially eat Michael, you
- 20:27know, and and his son, you know, and, you know, come further, you
- 20:31know, kind of like motivating him to kill the shark, you know,
- 20:34and further, you know, kind of like motivating him, you know,
- 20:37to kind of. Amber has decided to join us.
- 20:42Hey. Let.
- 20:45Me, but it's all. Right.
- 20:47OK, hold on a SEC. Let me add a little camera thing
- 20:51there. Hold on a second.
- 20:52We're. Going to have the whole crew.
- 20:54Hell yeah, I can't even take myself off the screen because
- 20:59Amber is way prettier than me AM.
- 21:02Oh no, you can keep yourself up there.
- 21:04I'm, I'm good hiding. I'm just, I'm sitting here
- 21:08reading Gypsy Foyas. Oh, OK, All right, there we go.
- 21:13Oh, here I am. OK.
- 21:14Hello everybody. Howdy, welcome.
- 21:18So, Amber, have you seen Jaws? I have.
- 21:22What did what did you think of the film?
- 21:25It made me scared to go in the water.
- 21:27Definitely I I was born in 79. I don't remember when it came
- 21:32out, but. I'm pretty sure it came out in
- 21:3478. 70. 575 Wow, I was way off. I know it's been a part of my
- 21:40entire life, you know, Jaws Knee, stuff like that.
- 21:45So it's scary. Yeah.
- 21:49I mean. It's it's an indelible film, you
- 21:51know, that just just really just, you know, just stuck in,
- 21:55in our, in our culture for for so long.
- 21:59I mean, the, the fact that we're celebrating the 50th anniversary
- 22:03of Jaws this month is yeah, just really shows the the film
- 22:09staying power, you know, and just the the fact that it is now
- 22:14been immortalized by Congress as as a film, you know, that that
- 22:21so it will be, it will be protected, you know, in the, in
- 22:26the National Library of Congress forever, forever and ever.
- 22:30And yeah, so. They make a Did they make a Jaws
- 22:33two and three-game as well? I I am sure that they have and.
- 22:39Let me check the Mac computer. And I'm certain that they're
- 22:41awful. Just like the movies.
- 22:45Oh my God, they're so bad. They're so bad.
- 22:49I mean, the, the, the only good thing that the third one had
- 22:52going for it was that it was really pushed in 3D, which was
- 22:56kind of like new at the time. And so that kind of helped it
- 23:00out. Maybe, maybe you know, but yeah,
- 23:04it's, it's so bad so. Yeah, I think I remember
- 23:06watching it in 3D and I watched The Three Stooges in 3D.
- 23:12Oh wow, when the slapstick comedy really slaps you.
- 23:17Yeah. So it's interesting the board
- 23:26game it just says just says a the game of Jaws 1975.
- 23:34Ideal Toy company, a simple removes the junk texerity game
- 23:40where you carefully pull pieces from a shark's open mouth.
- 23:45If you're unlucky, the shark snaps shut.
- 23:48That's kind of like a hungry hippo.
- 23:50It's rare today, but ideal 1975 version of the naked 2025
- 23:55release both exist. And then it talks about the
- 23:58board game of Ravensburg 2019. It's a suspenseful Symantec
- 24:04hidden movement game where one player is a shark and the other
- 24:08plays as Brody Hooper and Quinn. Kind of like this one.
- 24:12Oh, that. That that is that one.
- 24:13Yeah, OK. And then what?
- 24:18You know, I don't know why it just didn't tell me.
- 24:20No, on two and three. It it, you know, gosh, it's like
- 24:25Siri, if I wanted to, if I wanted to look shit up, I would
- 24:29have asked Siri. I just wanted to answer another
- 24:31question. But yeah.
- 24:33All right, so there's your answer.
- 24:35Answer's no. So Amber, so we, we talked a
- 24:38little bit about this this earlier, but is there a, is
- 24:43there a, a game that you have played that has been based off
- 24:48of the film? It's been based off of the film
- 24:51Oh ET I actually, I actually have it up there.
- 24:56My daughter was so afraid of ET as a kid.
- 25:01I mean, like I had to blindfold her when she went into
- 25:04Blockbuster. I it was bad.
- 25:06It was real. Yeah, it was bad.
- 25:09And see, I've been feeling dumb 'cause I was scared of the
- 25:12bathtub for about a month after Jaws.
- 25:16And so she finally got over it. And so as a joke, we have the ET
- 25:21game up there that her grandma had when she was a kid 'cause we
- 25:25had to actually hide that game for years.
- 25:29She didn't even like we couldn't even tell her where it was at.
- 25:33I know that there's like an ET Atari game like that.
- 25:37That's like an ancient game. No, I didn't.
- 25:39I was not aware that there was a board game.
- 25:42Hold on, let me get it. I have shorts on so I'm going to
- 25:44put my avatar on real quick. Everybody just waits and stares.
- 25:54OK, so let let let's let's do a, let's do a roundabout.
- 26:00Let's let's see how this thing plays out.
- 26:04A roundabout yeah. So the the shark player, which
- 26:11I, I got to admit, you know, is perhaps like my favorite I I, I
- 26:15love playing as the shark. It's so much fun.
- 26:18I mean, cause in, in a way, you're kind of the, the game
- 26:21master I get, or you know, of, of the game, you know, you know,
- 26:26you're, you're kind of you, if you, if you've played the game
- 26:33before, if you have some familiarity, it's best to play
- 26:36the shark just because there's some things that can go wrong.
- 26:40You know that because if you've got, you know, like somebody's
- 26:46just playing it for the, playing it for the first time, you know,
- 26:51then then you might, you know, kind of kind of mess up like
- 26:56where exactly or how exactly you move.
- 27:00So, so the shark has three. So you can start anywhere
- 27:09technically and nobody knows where you're starting from.
- 27:13It's, it's all you, you're, you're in your own world, like
- 27:15on your little shark, you know, in your, on your little shark
- 27:18tracker, you know, so and yeah. And then you don't like the the
- 27:26shark is just going to just kind of decide what they want to do.
- 27:34As sharks generally do. As they, as they do, you know,
- 27:38and, and so thankfully, like because of this shark tracker,
- 27:43you, you shouldn't be able to mess up, but you know, it
- 27:48happens. And so then I'm going to decide
- 27:51where the heck I'm. I'm going to start here.
- 27:54Kind of like Battleship. Right, exactly, exactly like
- 27:57Battleship. All right, so I know where I'm
- 28:01starting and. You know what's going on, I'm
- 28:04just watching. Probably we have no idea either.
- 28:07Yeah, we're we're all lost in the weeds.
- 28:11Yeah, right. Well, no, I mean, because,
- 28:14because quite honestly, I mean like jaws, like you are, you're
- 28:18in, you're in, you're in his world, you're in his habitat,
- 28:22you know, and so so really, you know, Bruce is kind of doing
- 28:26what Bruce does, you know, and has and so he is.
- 28:30So I have decided where I'm starting and and then so we
- 28:37have. So we we did like, you know,
- 28:39like the what will even go with the the that that first event
- 28:45card. So this first event card.
- 28:48So it kind of so you see here that.
- 28:52After placing swimmers, remove all swimmers at any one beach
- 28:57and close the beach. Yeah, all.
- 29:00Right. This is deja vu, OK?
- 29:02Yeah, so so then. So Mayor Vaughn then like has
- 29:09has decided to close and remove after police swimmers and then
- 29:17remove all swimmers at one beach, you know, so which so
- 29:22which beach would you like the, the the swimmers removed from?
- 29:26So we've got North Beach here, South Beach, E Beach, you know
- 29:31where, where would you guys like to?
- 29:36I say North Beach, yeah. All right, so you've you've
- 29:40told. It's colder in the north, right?
- 29:42That's where. That's where fish are OK.
- 29:44So we so we removed this and this beach is closed.
- 29:49So we. Got winter?
- 29:50Winter's coming. Beach is closed.
- 29:52So we got like this this handy little.
- 29:55All right, no swimming. Hazardous area.
- 29:58Beach closed by the order of the Witty Police.
- 30:03Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so, all right, so being that
- 30:07you that you made that that call, we're going to we're going
- 30:10to say that you're Brody here. Since Brody Brody's got the
- 30:13authority, he's got the badge. Oh, so I'm Brody.
- 30:16Yep so bro. Look it out.
- 30:20Look out Deputy Doofy. All right.
- 30:24So you've I'm glad we. OK, our podcast just went back
- 30:30to the 70s. The things we do on this podcast
- 30:35we can't do in the 2020 fives pretend like we're in the 1970s,
- 30:39guys. That's.
- 30:40Going to be interesting. So, so the the event has been
- 30:45resolved then and, and so then the shark is going to do what
- 30:51the shark does. OK.
- 30:56Gobble, gobble. Do I make sound effects or Oh
- 31:00no, I'm really. That's right.
- 31:04OK, and so then it's it's almost like a little like a like, have
- 31:09you played like mafia or what's mafia or the.
- 31:23Werewolf. It it'll, it'll, it'll come to
- 31:25yes, werewolf. So in like in werewolf, you
- 31:28know, then you see somebody has died, you know, like over the,
- 31:32the, the, the night, you know, and then everybody just has to
- 31:36kind of decide. So a swimmer has been eaten in
- 31:40in the East Beach. Oh oh oh, so it should have
- 31:44closed E instead of north. Nice job.
- 31:47Your your board game camera went out of focus.
- 31:50Yeah, oh boy. So, so then now now we know that
- 31:56the shark has three moves. So the the the shark and and
- 32:02that the and that the shark. So it takes 1 action to move a
- 32:09space and it takes 1 action to eat a swimmer.
- 32:12And and that the shark has not used any of his special
- 32:19abilities. So he has four special
- 32:21abilities. And I'll kind of go over like
- 32:25what each of these abilities are maybe when they're maybe when
- 32:30they're used, I don't know. But but basically like the the
- 32:34shark does not trigger like a motion sensor.
- 32:37The shark may eat all swimmers at a beach, the shark may move
- 32:43up to three spaces with one move, and the shark is invisible
- 32:47to Hooper's fish Finder. So, so these are these are all
- 32:51like things that can happen, but none of those things happened.
- 32:55So. But none of those abilities were
- 32:57used. And so are those cards finally
- 33:00founded? Like when you move across the
- 33:01board it tells you like pick it up.
- 33:03Or well, so so when the shark, you know, on their turn uses
- 33:08those things, then they'll let you know.
- 33:09So then, so then it gives you just more information to make
- 33:12kind of better decisions and such.
- 33:14So, so you know that. So here's Quint over here and
- 33:19where's. Oh, yeah.
- 33:21And so. All right, so Brody, you know,
- 33:24is, is at his police station right here.
- 33:28And then we got Hooper is at the dock and Quint is over here as
- 33:35the other dock. And and so then it comes down to
- 33:40what do you guys want to do? So you see that there's two
- 33:43swimmers at South Beach. You have you've been notified
- 33:48that that you have lost a swimmer at East Beach now and
- 33:55the North Beach was closed. So that that's.
- 33:58Yeah. So then next turn, then swimmers
- 34:02won't be going to where the beach is closed.
- 34:05So so we definitely want to close the East Beach now.
- 34:10So you so you won't be able to cause like you can only close
- 34:15like 1 beach. I mean, because so this is this
- 34:18is July 4th weekend and so everybody with so the the mayor
- 34:24wants to keep as much of the beach open as, as possible.
- 34:28That's the idea, you know, so you guys just kind of have to
- 34:31like decide what you guys want to do now So you can move, which
- 34:39costs one space, you can rescue a swimmer and that takes 1
- 34:43action or you can pick up a barrel and that costs one
- 34:46action. And so all of you have 4
- 34:51actions. So then so, so who wants to go?
- 34:58So, so Brody, you are landlocked, you know, you are
- 35:07you're kind of kind of stuck to, to this area now.
- 35:12Quint who? Who's going to be Quint?
- 35:18Who wants to be Quint? I don't know.
- 35:21So Quint, you've already got 2 barrels and now, now ultimately
- 35:27you want, so there are no barrels on the shark right now,
- 35:38you know, and so you want those two barrels to get, you know, on
- 35:43the shark and, and it just takes an action to, to basically like
- 35:48drop a, drop a barrel like into a, into an area.
- 35:55Now, if it's an area that I'm at that that the shark is at, you
- 36:00know, then it, it pins to that shark.
- 36:04So you guys just have to kind of find, find the shark.
- 36:10And so that's why it's always best for Quint to go last,
- 36:14because then Hooper and Brody, you know, can spend their turns
- 36:19trying to find the shark, and they might find him.
- 36:23And in the event that they do, then Quint can come to the
- 36:27rescue and pin him, you know, so, so.
- 36:34I guess I can be Hooper because I've got the matching glasses.
- 36:37There you go there. You.
- 36:38Go. And so is it Hooper's turn.
- 36:42I think he said it was Quinn's turn.
- 36:44I thought Quinn's going last. No, so, So this is also part of
- 36:49the the fun and part of the cooperative nature of this great
- 36:52game is that is that go whatever the heck you want, you know,
- 36:58whoever whoever wants to go first can go first, you know,
- 37:01and, and so it just, it just for, for strategy's sake, it's
- 37:06probably best for Quint to go last, you know, you know, just
- 37:10because he's the one that you know that can, he's the only one
- 37:12that can pin the barrels. Well, I'll go first.
- 37:15I'll go first. Let's let's start this party
- 37:18with a bang. So, all right, so you're just,
- 37:21you're here at the police station and what do you, what do
- 37:24you want to do? You got a couple of swimmers on
- 37:26the South Beach here. You got a swimmer on the the
- 37:30West beach. So so.
- 37:32What are my options? So you've got 4 actions, 4
- 37:35actions, and so to move to space cost 1 and to rescue a swimmer
- 37:40costs one. So.
- 37:42So yeah. So I say rescue a swimmer.
- 37:45You don't, so you don't want to go for the donut shop, Mr. Top.
- 37:52Your priorities are all fucked up, buddy.
- 37:54Are we? Let the curse on this podcast.
- 37:56Yeah, pretty much. Oops, I should never be invited
- 38:05anywhere. No, you're good.
- 38:08I I I think you're funny, Z. So do I.
- 38:11I appreciate it. OK, so I'm, I'm, I'm going to
- 38:17save a swimmer. OK.
- 38:23I don't know the the goal is has to do like like a round Robin,
- 38:29just one round before before our time's up.
- 38:33So, OK, all right. And so then will you?
- 38:38Do you want to go to South Beach or West Beach?
- 38:45Let's see, I think I want to. So I can only go to South Beach.
- 38:52Oh yeah, or West. Beach or West Beach?
- 38:54Sure, I can't go to East Beach because you've already closed
- 38:57down north. No, because they're next to you.
- 38:59So you're at, you're at the middle of the South and West.
- 39:03OK, I. You can only jump.
- 39:05Over to this. I've failed.
- 39:07I've failed Wayne NAV. OK, I'll do.
- 39:11I'll do South. All right, great.
- 39:13All right. So then.
- 39:15So one action gets you there, and then another action rescues
- 39:18a swimmer. Do you want to?
- 39:20Rescue the other one as well. Is it a woman or a man?
- 39:25Good question, Good question. It it looks to be.
- 39:33Is she single? Let your damn boyfriend save
- 39:38you, girl. I'm not trying to save you.
- 39:40That's your boyfriend's job. Let me have your number.
- 39:45Why do I feel like I'm sitting in in Harold and Kumar right
- 39:48now? They, I, I, I, I don't know.
- 39:58They, they, they, they are. They're submerged in water
- 40:02either either way. I OK, I I see if we can I say
- 40:06so. It's a they we're going to save.
- 40:08Both of them save both of them OK.
- 40:11All right, and so you have one more action.
- 40:13One more action, OK. You're in South Beach.
- 40:16Just party. So remind me what, what, what
- 40:19other actions I have I I can save a swimmer?
- 40:22Yeah, you can. You can come to the the shop and
- 40:24maybe pick up a barrel, you know, or I don't know, hang out
- 40:31now. So you also have these handy
- 40:34dandy binoculars, you know, and and so and you can use the the
- 40:41binoculars once per round to look into a beach space.
- 40:46So then you can like look out and see, well, is the shark
- 40:50here, you know, and so. I think that's what I would want
- 40:54to do is I would want to grab the binoculars.
- 40:56All right and you all right. And so you do so, and no shark
- 41:02there. All right, awesome.
- 41:04You don't see it all right? Oh, I got my fly gun.
- 41:12All right, I'm ready, guys. I'm ready.
- 41:15This cop needed some backups. This guy lady ass cop.
- 41:19Right. So Hooper.
- 41:21Somebody said cop. Oh my God, Joe.
- 41:27OK, and so so Hooper is the is in his his fancy fast boat and
- 41:37he can move up to two spaces and Papa, Yeah.
- 41:44And so you've got 4 actions, whomever Hooper Hooper is.
- 41:49I'm Hooper. Go Hoover.
- 41:52Where? Where am I at on the board?
- 41:55All right, so Hooper is right here.
- 41:58Yeah, hanging out in. Can we go?
- 42:01Can I go and save this lady in the West Beach?
- 42:03You sure can. Sure, we.
- 42:06Don't. Hey, pretty Mama.
- 42:07All right, so one and. Hop on my boat.
- 42:13All right. And rescued.
- 42:16OK, so then that's two action and so then you have two more
- 42:20actions. Oh, and, and also these count as
- 42:28spaces as well. So the that's, it's kind of like
- 42:32a fast way of traveling, you know, kind of getting, you know,
- 42:34like getting around the board such, so, and also Hooper has a
- 42:42fish Finder. So he's got this fancy little
- 42:47fish Finder on his boat and and when he uses that.
- 42:54Didn't I get binoculars? Where's my binoculars?
- 42:59Oh, yeah, you, yeah, you got these.
- 43:02Yeah, yeah. So All right.
- 43:09So, so then yeah, you, you got this.
- 43:13You got your fish Finder if you want to to use it and it lets
- 43:17you know. All right, Well, yeah, it it, it
- 43:29lets you know if the shark is is in an adjacent space.
- 43:34So I've got 2 moves left right. Yes.
- 43:37So can I use my fish Finder in in quadrant one and then move
- 43:42over to quadrant 2? Oh, so unfortunately, like this
- 43:51is a diagonal move and it's, it just needs to be, yeah, just
- 43:55kind of adjacent. But I don't know, you could go
- 43:59to three and then just do like a, you know?
- 44:01Yeah. I could go to three and then one
- 44:03I guess, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 44:08And unfortunately then you wouldn't be able to use your
- 44:10fish Finder because you only got like 2.
- 44:12Actions. Oh, fish Finder is my move.
- 44:14Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It takes an action to.
- 44:17Oh, I see, I see. OK, so let's just check out
- 44:19three and and find some fish in there.
- 44:22All right, yeah. And so, yeah, you use your fish
- 44:26Finder and no dice. Yeah, there there is there,
- 44:30there is no shark there. So now it's and so then you have
- 44:38used all of all four actions, you know, and now it is Quint's
- 44:45turn. Wait.
- 44:46Quint. So Quint is here on the dock
- 44:50sitting in his in the orca and and you have 4 actions.
- 44:59So. Let's go to East Beach.
- 45:06OK, so 1 action. Can I throw my little barrels
- 45:12out there in the water? All right, so once per round you
- 45:17can launch a barrel. OK, let's launch a barrel.
- 45:21All right, OK, barrel launch. All right.
- 45:24So one of your barrels has has been launched into the beach and
- 45:29it does not connect and it doesn't attach to A to A, to a
- 45:35beach or to a shark. But my kids love this.
- 45:43But now in the future, whenever the shark passes through this
- 45:47space, then it will be then it will trigger.
- 45:52And so then, you know, like whenever the the shark moves
- 45:55through there, then the shark player has to let you know, you
- 45:58know, that that has that that space has been triggered.
- 46:03Yeah. So, so all of these barrels, you
- 46:05know, then, you know, are useful as you, you know, place them
- 46:09about the board, you know, then, then they kind of like trigger,
- 46:13you know, like you know, where, you know, it kind of gives you
- 46:19an idea of like where the shark may be, you know, And so then
- 46:23you can make some educated guesses as to, you know, where
- 46:26exactly they might be. OK, so I have two more moves.
- 46:31Yes. And I just go to #6 sure, OK.
- 46:42OK. And yeah.
- 46:44And and so there is, you know, like no, no swimmers out there.
- 46:49So. So that's good.
- 46:51And and then I guess I want to go to the store.
- 46:55Oh, so you sure? Yeah.
- 47:02Yeah, you can. You can do that.
- 47:05I have. No idea.
- 47:06Well, yeah, it's just that it's that usually these characters,
- 47:14they don't leave their their boats.
- 47:16So, so it's but, but no, but it certainly is possible though.
- 47:21So, but yeah, so it's great, all right, yeah.
- 47:27And and so then it would then go back to the the shark and then
- 47:32round and round, you know, like we would go and so.
- 47:38Now this, now this the thing that looks like you put the
- 47:42ocean in the basket thing, does that come with jaws or is that
- 47:46something you brought from home? The the the Little Quilt Bowl.
- 47:54Oh, this little guy. No.
- 47:56It's just something from home. OK.
- 47:57All right. OK.
- 48:00So, but, but yeah, so that is that.
- 48:03That is a round of jaws of jaws. I like it.
- 48:08And yeah, and and then, you know, in a in a wild way and I
- 48:16think. And while, while, while you're
- 48:19doing, you know, I'm, I'm just going to throw this out so we
- 48:21get some of these out the jaws. Fun fact #3 you're going to need
- 48:27a bigger boat. Was an ad libbed line that was
- 48:31running a joke among crew about how small the craft services
- 48:37boat was for lunch breaks. That is, that is a true story,
- 48:44and that's hilarious. You're about the woman who was
- 48:48found dead on the beach and where they filmed Jaws, and that
- 48:53she may be one of the extras in the film.
- 48:57Oh wow, I didn't know that. No, I didn't know that that was
- 48:59that. Yeah, she.
- 49:05There was a woman who was found dead on the beach and over the
- 49:10years people have looked at film footage and they suspect that
- 49:16she may be the extra that they see in the film.
- 49:20You have to look it up. I don't remember much about it,
- 49:22but. Well, nice.
- 49:24Now not only am I scared of the maps, but I'm scared of the
- 49:27beats. Thank you.
- 49:30Hey, there's a lot of stuff that happens on the.
- 49:31Yeah, on July on July 26th 1974, a body was found in the dunes.
- 49:39Lady of the Dunes is what they called her.
- 49:41That's what it is, yeah. Look.
- 49:45At that and FBI didn't identify her until 20/22 as 37 year old
- 49:49Ruth Marie Terry. OK, I didn't remember if they
- 49:52had identified her or not. Now, did she have?
- 49:57Was there a question that maybe Whitey Bulger actually killed
- 49:59her? Does that say that?
- 50:03Does that say that? And they also didn't confirm
- 50:05that it was on set either. Is that the same Whitey from me,
- 50:09myself and Irene? No.
- 50:11Whitey Culture. The Gangster.
- 50:14No, the guy, they called him Whitey.
- 50:16I just wondered. No.
- 50:21All right. And I'm just going to just kind
- 50:23of do like a quickie little little whole run through of the
- 50:30the the second act here. So the the second act so ever so
- 50:38this is triggered, you know, when when either 2 barrels, you
- 50:43know, like have been have been attached to to jaws or all the
- 50:49the swimmers you know, like have been have been eaten.
- 50:53And, and so then the more swimmers that that the shark
- 50:58manages to eat, then the stronger that they are and the
- 51:01more cards, more like special cards, you know, the shark
- 51:05player gets, you know, to, to, to use in the second act and
- 51:11the, the second act, then everybody just kind of starts
- 51:15like wherever they would like on, on the Orca and, and the,
- 51:28and you never, and much like the beginning, like the, the, the
- 51:32hidden movement, you know, aspect of the game is that you
- 51:35don't know, like where Jaws is going to pop up and.
- 51:49Yeah, that added to the mystery in the movie, right?
- 51:51Yeah. Because the whole time they were
- 51:53like Oh my God, is it on port side or starboard side or?
- 51:56Right. I can't remember much about it,
- 51:59it's been so long since I've seen it.
- 52:01And while he does that #4 Jaws was nominated for a four Academy
- 52:08Awards, including Best Picture. It won best film editing, best
- 52:12original dramatic score and best sound.
- 52:18Yeah, well, you, you will forever remember Dun Dun.
- 52:23Steven Spielberg was actually a little upset and a lot of
- 52:26professionals at the time were upset that Steven Spielberg was
- 52:30not nominated to be best director is how can you have a
- 52:34best picture, you know, film nominated without best director
- 52:39just doesn't make much sense. And and it was just the fact
- 52:45that it was that he was so early in his career.
- 52:48He was 27 at the time. And the, and this was like, I
- 52:52think his second film. He had like Sugar Land Express
- 52:57before this. And if you're really want to go
- 52:59back, his first, his very first, like student film was The Duel.
- 53:05And and they're and they're great to watch.
- 53:08Great, great films. But but yeah, but Jaws, you
- 53:13know, like was very early in his career.
- 53:15And so a lot of people felt like, well, I mean, you know it.
- 53:19You know, he doesn't deserve the nomination yet.
- 53:22You know, he's just too early. He's a rookie.
- 53:25Yeah, yeah, so, but. And the theme music is
- 53:30considered the most famous of all time for a movie, by the
- 53:34way. Movie theme.
- 53:35Music da da da da is considered some of the It's the most famous
- 53:40theme music of a movie. I mean, how many times have you
- 53:43been in a pool you know and are creeping up on?
- 53:51At least three times this summer already.
- 53:59I would like Steven Spielberg to do a a really good movie.
- 54:04It's been a while since there's been a really good movie out
- 54:07there. Now, shout out to Steven
- 54:08Spielberg, call the show, 720-619-0627.
- 54:12Let us know how bad we're crapping on your movie right now
- 54:17because of the of our lack of knowledge of the board game.
- 54:21Talking about board game, it is that time.
- 54:23It is the five minute warning Jaws fun fact #5 Peter Benchley
- 54:30novels Jaws was released at the same time in the film and remain
- 54:35#1 on the New York Time best bestseller list for 44 weeks.
- 54:42Benchley very quickly became an advocate for sharks.
- 54:47I remember seeing that book on my dad's table, you know, next
- 54:52to his chair. We read all those kinds of
- 54:56books. So yeah, so then the second act,
- 55:05you know, then happens and in the second act then everybody,
- 55:10you know, just kind of has to, you know, look at where they're
- 55:15where they're at on the board here.
- 55:17And there is 3 possible places that that jaws will pop up.
- 55:25And so it's AB or C. Always pick C Always pick C with
- 55:33in doubt, right? All the tests has to be.
- 55:37I mean, that's the reason why I failed it.
- 55:39And so then, you know, like, and at this point, you know, like
- 55:43depending on how well you did in the first act, then you might
- 55:47have more cards to work with. And like these cards can be like
- 55:53a hook. They can be, they can be a
- 55:55shotgun, a baseball bat, all kinds of like weird wild
- 55:59weapons. You know that that.
- 56:01Just like the binoculars. Yes, OK.
- 56:04And and so then you can use and all of the weapons like have
- 56:10different rules. So like for instance, if you got
- 56:12like the rifle or whatever, you know, then then you can you
- 56:14know, like shoot at like another, another space.
- 56:23So like, so yeah, yeah, you'll see that like, you know, all
- 56:27these these are kind of these are kind of like your, your
- 56:32crosshairs, if you will. And so everybody, yeah, got your
- 56:37got your little crosshairs here. And then, you know, so then I
- 56:44don't know, Quint decides, you know, I'm I'm right here.
- 56:46I'm not going to move, you know, I'm just going to stay here and
- 56:49I'm going to commit to see you and I'm going to you know, do
- 56:53you know, and and then, you know, so these these guys, you
- 57:01know, then they can now you have to be in the space with the AB
- 57:08or C to participate in the attack.
- 57:11You know, all right, because you could sit out, you know, I mean,
- 57:14because like maybe, just maybe you're banged up, which is very
- 57:18possible because so like on so everybody like has like an act
- 57:26two side to there and so they can only take so much damage
- 57:31before they get before they no more.
- 57:35Now we got 3 minutes because we can't stay any longer because
- 57:39with the Ferren's shows, next sure thing so.
- 57:45Yeah. Well, in that case, I'll take A
- 57:46and you'll take B, and let's flip those cards.
- 57:50Yeah. And and so they and
- 57:52unfortunately, yeah. So then, you know, like, you
- 57:59know, much like, much like how it is, is, you know, is that,
- 58:05you know, the, the the shark, you know, has decided, you know,
- 58:08like what he which space he's going to pop up in and oh, he's,
- 58:12he's chosen B, you know. So then he comes up here and
- 58:15then you and then you roll for damage and you know, and he
- 58:20could very well damage the, the the boat or destroy it.
- 58:26Oh my. God.
- 58:27And so then you, you start whittling down the boat and you
- 58:30know, here and, and then and the game ends when Jaws has
- 58:39completely destroyed the boat or has killed everyone and.
- 58:45Can you ever kill Jaws? Oh yes.
- 58:47OK, all right, so the game ends when you kill Jaws if he doesn't
- 58:51kill the boat first. Yeah, yeah, 'cause he's OK,
- 58:53'cause he's got life, just like like you.
- 58:56Just like we do, OK? And so, so then, yeah.
- 58:59And so then and, and every time that I have played Jaws, it is
- 59:03just like a crazy climactic ending because, you know, I
- 59:08don't know, it's just a very well balanced game that just
- 59:11really encapsulates the the movie in a lot of fun ways.
- 59:16And, and it has really grown to be one of my favorite games for
- 59:21sure. So on the scale to to kind of
- 59:24end the show, so from a scale on one to 10, what was you rated
- 59:28and what would you rate it for? Like how old do you think you
- 59:33need to be to be? Because like a 5 year old
- 59:35probably wouldn't do very good on this.
- 59:37Yeah, I mean, they get certainly a 5 year old, you know, would
- 59:40need some help for sure. But no, I would say just
- 59:45because, just because so many movie board games have done so
- 59:50badly, you know, I mean, I don't know, 9 out of 10, you know, I
- 59:55mean like, you know, it is it is so way it is.
- 59:59It's it's done so well. Yeah, that it it definitely
- 1:00:03deserves, you know, to be a, you know, you know, incident on
- 1:00:07world. Great conversation of some of
- 1:00:09the best games as far as. I feel like I feel like 10 and
- 1:00:12up could play this game with like adult supervision.
- 1:00:15What does the box say on it? Does it?
- 1:00:16Does it have an age back then? I mean it is it says 12 and up.
- 1:00:24There we. Go.
- 1:00:25That was close. There's the answer.
- 1:00:28Well hey, I really, I really dig this today man.
