- 0:24Speaker 2: a hater. It is that time of week where we
- 0:26Speaker 2: have a guest join us. Check him out on First
- 0:29Speaker 2: Things First on FS1. Coming to us live from suburbia,
- 0:33Speaker 2: Danny Parkins.
- 0:34Speaker 1: What's going on? Bo, good to be with you, man.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I appreciate it. And yes, we'll get to it later
- 0:40Speaker 1: in the show. Yes, yes. the capital of suburbia.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yes that was the tease just to let people know
- 0:46Speaker 2: and somehow we had lost track of this and park
- 0:47Speaker 2: has reminded me we have dispatches from the local newspaper
- 0:51Speaker 2: that he has to share that we will get to
- 0:53Speaker 2: a little bit later but we will start with something
- 0:55Speaker 2: that suburbia is also all about the u.s men's national
- 0:59Speaker 2: team um in soccer now i would be honest with
- 1:02Speaker 2: you i want to answer this for somebody by the
- 1:04Speaker 2: way i saw the youtube comments where i said that
- 1:06Speaker 2: i was in italy And it wasn't a World Cup
- 1:08Speaker 2: in Italy.
- 1:09Speaker 3: And they said, where was I?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Because they said they were there for nine days and
- 1:12Speaker 2: they saw plenty of World Cup.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I was up in the north. I was in the Dolomites.
- 1:16Speaker 2: And so maybe it was just because we was in
- 1:18Speaker 2: the mountains and maybe he was down there in the south.
- 1:20Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Maybe he was around more tourists.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Italy, however, was like World Cup. What World Cup? We
- 1:26Speaker 3: all know what's going on.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Now, this thing happened with with with a Balagoon.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Where he had got a red card.
- 1:34Speaker 2: And a red card, for those who don't follow this closely,
- 1:37Speaker 2: if you get a red card, which is the double
- 1:39Speaker 2: technical of soccer, if you get a red card, that
- 1:42Speaker 2: also means you can't play in the next game. And shockingly,
- 1:45Speaker 2: FIFA had it in his regulations that there is no
- 1:48Speaker 2: appeal process, which has led to some fascinating discussions about
- 1:51Speaker 2: the differences between Europe and the United States. Where in Europe,
- 1:54Speaker 2: it is like, all right, I guess in the U.S.,
- 1:56Speaker 2: we call him the manager, right? But then magically out
- 1:59Speaker 2: of nowhere, FIFA was like, eh, never mind. And then
- 2:03Speaker 2: Trump popped up and was like, yeah, yeah, we gave
- 2:06Speaker 2: him a call. There's no telling exactly how that went,
- 2:10Speaker 2: who really led the charge, whatever it is. But in
- 2:12Speaker 2: the end, it is amazing how tolerant people are of
- 2:16Speaker 2: corruption when it goes their way. But there was some
- 2:19Speaker 2: measure of corruption. We had this happen. And, you know,
- 2:23Speaker 2: it sounded like I saw enough of the match to
- 2:25Speaker 2: say this.
- 2:25Speaker 3: U.S., they look like they was guilty. You know what
- 2:27Speaker 3: I'm saying? It looked like they knew it wasn't supposed
- 2:29Speaker 3: to be like that.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Went out there and got their asses whooped by a
- 2:31Speaker 2: country the size of Maryland.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah, it didn't matter. They could have had six balligans
- 2:38Speaker 1: out there, Bo. And Belgium just kind of reminded us
- 2:42Speaker 1: exactly where we stand in the world of international soccer. And,
- 2:48Speaker 1: you know, listen, I gamble enough for both of us.
- 2:50Speaker 1: We were a slight favorite in that game. That was
- 2:54Speaker 1: some home cooking by the odds makers. I think we
- 2:57Speaker 1: overrated home field advantage in a big way. And so, listen,
- 3:00Speaker 1: Team USA came out flat. got their ass kicked, did
- 3:05Speaker 1: not look like they deserved to be on the field
- 3:07Speaker 1: with Belgium. And the whole thing on Belgium going in
- 3:10Speaker 1: was like, this is the golden generation. There were four
- 3:13Speaker 1: guys on that team that were on the team in
- 3:15Speaker 1: 2014 that beat Team USA in the Olympics. So it
- 3:18Speaker 1: was like, Belgium is old. Belgium is slow. Belgium is
- 3:22Speaker 1: past their prime. And eight minutes into the game, we're
- 3:27Speaker 1: down 1-0 and look straight shook. Like, it was... I
- 3:32Speaker 1: don't think we lose 4-1 if we play the match
- 3:35Speaker 1: 10 times. I do think that was in the direction
- 3:37Speaker 1: of an outlier bad result. But man, did we look outclassed, overmatched,
- 3:42Speaker 1: not ready for the moment, scared. Everything you could possibly
- 3:46Speaker 1: say that is damning about the U.S. team, you could say,
- 3:49Speaker 1: and it's totally fair for that game.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Yo, and the thing was, so many of my soccer
- 3:54Speaker 2: bowl friends were hitting me up at the beginning of this.
- 3:57Speaker 2: We had never seen a U.S. team like this one.
- 3:59Speaker 2: It was the best attack ever. that they had ever
- 4:02Speaker 2: seen coming from the United States. They got a bunch
- 4:05Speaker 2: of dudes who play high-level European soccer.
- 4:08Speaker 1: That's true.
- 4:09Speaker 2: You tell me if I'm wrong here, this seemed to
- 4:12Speaker 2: be the most talented team that the U.S. has ever
- 4:15Speaker 2: trotted out to go play international soccer. Now, also correct
- 4:19Speaker 2: me if I'm wrong, they got that good FIFA host
- 4:23Speaker 2: country cooking on the group. and so it wasn't like
- 4:26Speaker 2: they were out here like they they played racist ass
- 4:29Speaker 2: paraguay and yes this week they they earned that title
- 4:32Speaker 2: whoever that lady was over there in paraguay she earned
- 4:35Speaker 2: that title when she talked about uh mbappe drinking.
- 4:37Speaker 3: From coconuts and shit like whoa lady wow.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Yes there's there's the line and then there's way past
- 4:44Speaker 1: the line uh yeah listen got a very favorable draw
- 4:49Speaker 1: including like playing teams in the draw that they had
- 4:52Speaker 1: played in the lead up to it, who they had
- 4:54Speaker 1: played well against like Paraguay and Australia. So like the
- 4:57Speaker 1: teams that they knew also got to remember, this is
- 5:01Speaker 1: the expanded world cup, right? So like the last three
- 5:04Speaker 1: world cups that the U S had qualified for, because
- 5:06Speaker 1: then they didn't even qualify in 2018. They made it
- 5:10Speaker 1: to the round of 16 and then lost in largely
- 5:13Speaker 1: uncompetitive fashion. And so this time, It's like, well, for
- 5:17Speaker 1: the first time, the U.S. won a knockout round game
- 5:20Speaker 1: since 2002. Well, the knockout round game that the U.S.
- 5:24Speaker 1: won was around a 32 match, which.
- 5:26Speaker 3: It never existed before. So, like, you.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Know, the field was watered down because more countries made it,
- 5:33Speaker 1: and then you got a very favorable group stage draw,
- 5:38Speaker 1: and to their credit, they did dominate those early group
- 5:41Speaker 1: stage games, and they put the ball in the back
- 5:43Speaker 1: of the net in a way that they had never
- 5:45Speaker 1: done before. Like, They led the whole tournament in first-half
- 5:48Speaker 1: goals going through the round of 32. They had seven
- 5:51Speaker 1: of them. Balogun, I'm sure you've seen the story by now.
- 5:57Speaker 1: His mom was pregnant. They were vacationing in America. They
- 6:01Speaker 1: didn't let her get back on the plane, so she
- 6:03Speaker 1: delivered in America. So birthright citizenship kicked in. But his parents, Nigerian,
- 6:07Speaker 1: raised in England. He was not developed by the American
- 6:11Speaker 1: soccer culture. He was developed by English soccer culture. And
- 6:14Speaker 1: then they just recruited him to play for us. That's
- 6:16Speaker 1: a huge win. And yeah, Weston McKinney plays for Juventus.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And obviously Pulisic plays over in Europe, plays for AC Milan.
- 6:24Speaker 1: We have good players. We just don't have enough of them.
- 6:28Speaker 1: And our defense is old and slow. Our goalkeeper is
- 6:32Speaker 1: bad and plays in the MLS. And we finally played
- 6:35Speaker 1: a team with a good attack that knows how to
- 6:37Speaker 1: play soccer. Belgium makes the World Cup every time. They're awesome.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And they destroyed us.
- 6:43Speaker 3: So I would like to make one point in fairness
- 6:45Speaker 3: to U.S.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Soccer.
- 6:47Speaker 2: And there's a lot of discussion anytime this comes up.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And I think this is still relevant that it is
- 6:53Speaker 2: in our country that soccer is a country club sport.
- 6:56Speaker 2: It's not that way anywhere else in the world. And
- 6:59Speaker 2: that is a sign that we really just don't take
- 7:02Speaker 2: this game that seriously. if you do things that exclude
- 7:05Speaker 2: who can ultimately play. But I think we also have
- 7:08Speaker 2: to acknowledge that clearly we take this game a lot
- 7:10Speaker 2: more seriously than we used to because look at all
- 7:12Speaker 2: those black people. When the United States decides it really
- 7:15Speaker 2: takes the sport seriously, they go get black people, right?
- 7:18Speaker 2: Like it's the ultimate, all right, man, well, shit. We
- 7:20Speaker 2: tried everything else, right? Why don't we go pull that lever?
- 7:24Speaker 2: And then you go out there and boom, it was
- 7:26Speaker 2: out there. So I don't want to say that we
- 7:28Speaker 2: don't take this thing seriously. I do think, and from
- 7:32Speaker 2: my reading and discussions with people about soccer, a point
- 7:35Speaker 2: that is frequently made about America is that as a nation,
- 7:39Speaker 2: we believe that athleticism is the solution to everything.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Like if we could just get our best athletes out
- 7:45Speaker 2: there playing soccer, the best soccer player in the world
- 7:48Speaker 2: is five. Seven is all I'm saying. Like it's not
- 7:52Speaker 2: this isn't that game. That's part of why it is
- 7:56Speaker 2: so appealing. It's part of why also a country like
- 7:58Speaker 2: Belgium can consistently be good because they don't have the
- 8:02Speaker 2: numbers to just consistently trot out these level of athletes.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Now, you know, colonialism.
- 8:06Speaker 2: It's certainly helping them out also put a pin in
- 8:08Speaker 2: that thought, but the approach of the American observer, which
- 8:12Speaker 2: is like, man, we can get our football players out there. Nah, they're,
- 8:15Speaker 2: they're football players. They, they, they not footy. They are
- 8:19Speaker 2: football players. They should be over there playing football.
- 8:23Speaker 1: A hundred percent. There's an artistry that experts that I've
- 8:27Speaker 1: talked to seem to think that like the American training
- 8:29Speaker 1: system doesn't really have that. We're like, we will just
- 8:32Speaker 1: like rely on athleticism. And then it's like a drill. Like, Dribble, dribble, pass.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And it's like X's and O's. It's like, no, you've
- 8:38Speaker 1: got to be able to have some like feel like
- 8:41Speaker 1: be born with a soccer ball in the crib type
- 8:43Speaker 1: of thing. And listen to your point on the money
- 8:48Speaker 1: aspect of it. This is just, again, purely anecdotal. And
- 8:51Speaker 1: I realize a person of means person of privilege. My
- 8:55Speaker 1: six year old, my older son, he started to get
- 8:58Speaker 1: into soccer. He's like he plays with his friend at recess.
- 9:01Speaker 1: He wanted to play some soccer. Next, starting this week,
- 9:04Speaker 1: he's going to the rec camp, just like the community
- 9:06Speaker 1: center camp. And it's nice and it's on town or whatever.
- 9:08Speaker 1: But there was a week gap between school and this.
- 9:12Speaker 1: And both me and my wife work. So we wanted
- 9:14Speaker 1: to find like a week long camp for him. He
- 9:16Speaker 1: said he wanted to do a soccer camp. So I
- 9:19Speaker 1: had no involvement in this. My wife signs him up
- 9:21Speaker 1: for a soccer camp a couple of towns over. And
- 9:24Speaker 1: I'm taking him to the first day. And that's the
- 9:26Speaker 1: day that I look at the packet. And I realized
- 9:28Speaker 1: that the camp is... associated loosely in some way that
- 9:32Speaker 1: I don't really understand with Real Madrid. And I'm like, babe,
- 9:36Speaker 1: what camp did you sign him up for? And it's
- 9:38Speaker 1: like six to 12 years old. And he is for
- 9:41Speaker 1: sure the smallest kid with the least soccer experience. And
- 9:45Speaker 1: I stayed and watched the first like 30 minutes. And
- 9:47Speaker 1: some of these kids have clearly good at soccer. He's
- 9:51Speaker 1: the worst player in the camp, but whatever. He loves it.
- 9:53Speaker 1: He's trying. He's learning. Who cares? Apparently at the end
- 9:57Speaker 1: of the camp, one week later, and this was not like,
- 10:00Speaker 1: that expensive a camp, but whatever. They sent him an
- 10:03Speaker 1: invitation to train at Real Madrid's facilities in Spain if
- 10:11Speaker 1: we would pay $ 4, 500 for a week. And I was like,
- 10:19Speaker 1: There's no way he qualified into it. He's six years old.
- 10:24Speaker 1: He's terrible. And I've talked to parents around here that
- 10:27Speaker 1: are like, oh, yeah, you have to do club and
- 10:30Speaker 1: travel soccer. I'm like, your kid is nine. What are
- 10:33Speaker 1: you talking about? So it is just a money grab
- 10:37Speaker 1: here where if you want to keep up with the Joneses,
- 10:40Speaker 1: you get priced out immediately. And that's just not the
- 10:44Speaker 1: way that it's done basically everywhere else in the world.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Yeah, like there is a higher level, obviously, that once
- 10:48Speaker 2: you're picked out, you get into or whatever it is.
- 10:50Speaker 3: But like, yeah, no, it is not. It is actually
- 10:53Speaker 3: funny because in the States, I would make this point.
- 10:55Speaker 1: And it's always, I.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Always say we can't forget about certain things and certain people.
- 11:00Speaker 2: It feels like there's two levels, right? Of like just
- 11:03Speaker 2: people playing soccer. It's the people with the money and
- 11:07Speaker 2: the leagues and everything else. And it's the Mexicans. right
- 11:12Speaker 2: like clint dempsey is the example of the dude who
- 11:14Speaker 2: came up playing soccer in the trailer park hanging with
- 11:17Speaker 2: the mexicans right like like those are the two levels
- 11:20Speaker 2: uh we had somebody leave a voice note here once
- 11:22Speaker 2: by the way about his kid playing soccer and it's
- 11:24Speaker 2: kind of like the pilgrimage like when a white dude
- 11:26Speaker 2: back in the day was actually good at basketball you're
- 11:28Speaker 2: gonna take him to play back you're gonna take him
- 11:30Speaker 2: to some.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Other neighborhoods to who no no no it's when the.
- 11:32Speaker 2: White team play the mexican team is soccer the energy
- 11:35Speaker 2: the attitude it's all completely different.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yeah man it and uh We didn't go to Spain.
- 11:43Speaker 1: We're not going to Spain.
- 11:43Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 11:44Speaker 1: I was like, you could just play with your friend
- 11:47Speaker 1: at recess. And if you're still good in five years,
- 11:50Speaker 1: maybe if he's good in four years, I'll take him
- 11:52Speaker 1: to a World Cup game in Spain. But it was
- 11:54Speaker 1: like this. The whole thing was crazy, man. The price
- 11:58Speaker 1: of the tickets, the price of everything is just ridiculous.
- 12:01Speaker 1: And it is a reminder that we are just not.
- 12:04Speaker 1: We've probably reached this level where I don't know if
- 12:08Speaker 1: we have it in us, frankly. To get on Spain
- 12:11Speaker 1: and France and, you know, all those other countries level.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Because as soon as the game ended last night, I
- 12:18Speaker 1: saw people being like, well, maybe this kid Sullivan, who's
- 12:21Speaker 1: on the Philly team, who's 16 years old, who's the
- 12:23Speaker 1: youngest dude to score a goal in MLS. Like, maybe.
- 12:25Speaker 1: I don't know. But I remember the Christian Pulisic hype.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I remember the Freddie Adu hype.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Yes.
- 12:31Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like, we've just been through
- 12:32Speaker 1: this before. You need... A lot of guys. Yeah. You
- 12:36Speaker 1: need a lot of them. And we've got like one, two,
- 12:40Speaker 1: or three who looked like they belonged out there last night.
- 12:42Speaker 2: And also, I think where it becomes interesting to me
- 12:45Speaker 2: is kind of sort of like a fundamental ethos, right? Now,
- 12:47Speaker 2: France is interesting because France also decided, hey, Les Noirs.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Let's get some, let's get some noir on our team.
- 12:56Speaker 2: And you see what that has kind of like become,
- 12:58Speaker 2: but also seems to be like an idea of, or
- 13:00Speaker 2: just the idea is getting the best players you can
- 13:03Speaker 2: and not letting non-sport reasons interfere with.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Getting better players, right? Like no matter what the reason is.
- 13:10Speaker 2: If the reason is not about the game and you're
- 13:12Speaker 2: using that to whittle people off, then you're not going
- 13:13Speaker 2: to be as good as you could be.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:15Speaker 2: This applies even to things like making kids pass their classes.
- 13:18Speaker 2: We've decided that there's a good reason for you to
- 13:21Speaker 2: do that, but you're not going to be better by
- 13:24Speaker 2: doing that.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Like no matter what, what the barrier to entry is,
- 13:28Speaker 2: if it is a barrier that interferes with you getting
- 13:30Speaker 2: the best players, then you're not going to have the
- 13:32Speaker 2: best players. Like I understand that that is a very
- 13:35Speaker 2: obvious statement, but it's one worth noting. Um, I also
- 13:39Speaker 2: think that it becomes a question almost, at least from
- 13:41Speaker 2: the distance at which I watch this, of like a
- 13:43Speaker 2: fundamental ethos. We have seen Brazil not be Brazil. Like
- 13:47Speaker 2: the first time I watched Brazil play, I think it
- 13:50Speaker 2: was against Haiti. It was one of those, no, Haiti,
- 13:52Speaker 2: they beat the brakes off Haiti. But I saw them
- 13:54Speaker 2: play somebody else where I was like, hey, are they
- 13:56Speaker 2: still good?
- 13:58Speaker 3: Right? And there's been questions.
- 13:59Speaker 2: About whether the ethos of Brazilian soccer has changed and
- 14:02Speaker 2: the things that people are ascribing it to. specifically to
- 14:05Speaker 2: religion and discussions that I've seen have been interesting, but it,
- 14:08Speaker 2: it does, it, it, it takes us toward the idea though,
- 14:11Speaker 2: that there's something about this game where it goes just
- 14:13Speaker 2: beyond the training and everything else, that there is something
- 14:15Speaker 2: a bit more ethereal that determines like how good teams
- 14:19Speaker 2: and programs ultimately wind up being.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Yeah. You know, and I listen, I'm certainly not enough
- 14:24Speaker 1: of an expert to, to have all of the answers
- 14:27Speaker 1: here because something you said a little bit ago, like
- 14:30Speaker 1: I do think we take it seriously because, They spent
- 14:33Speaker 1: a lot of money to hire Pochettino. Pochettino is a
- 14:36Speaker 1: very highly regarded manager who is very much not American.
- 14:42Speaker 1: As he said during the training, he's like, I'm 200% Argentinian.
- 14:46Speaker 1: He is a proud Argentinian. And Kansas City, a place
- 14:50Speaker 1: that my mom's side of the family is from and
- 14:52Speaker 1: that I did radio for a number of years, there's
- 14:55Speaker 1: a U.S. soccer training complex in Kansas City. The MLS
- 15:00Speaker 1: has gotten better and bigger and more profitable and attracted
- 15:03Speaker 1: star players. And some programs have season ticket waiting lists.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Like I do think generally speaking, we are investing in soccer.
- 15:11Speaker 1: We are investing in Team USA soccer and soccer is
- 15:14Speaker 1: getting more popular. But there's just. There's a huge gap, man. Well,
- 15:20Speaker 1: like there's a there's a huge, huge gap. between us
- 15:23Speaker 1: and everybody else, and are we closing the gap? I
- 15:27Speaker 1: personally find it hard to make the argument that we
- 15:29Speaker 1: are when, again, the last three World Cups, we made
- 15:32Speaker 1: the round of 16 and lost in non-competitive fashion, and
- 15:36Speaker 1: this World Cup, we made the round of 16 and
- 15:38Speaker 1: lost in non-competitive fashion.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Well, let's throw a couple things out here, right?
- 15:42Speaker 2: First of all, 16 in a world with 194 countries. Now,
- 15:47Speaker 2: I understand not every country is the same size, da-da-da,
- 15:50Speaker 2: everything else, but, you know.
- 15:53Speaker 3: We, I think as a nation are being a little greedy.
- 15:58Speaker 1: You know, it's an interesting point. Yeah.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Like, cause, cause what I will say is we have
- 16:05Speaker 1: maybe not closed the gap on the top teams, but
- 16:08Speaker 1: I do think we have distanced ourselves from being sorry.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Yes. Yes.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Like we, we are improving. And to the point earlier,
- 16:16Speaker 1: like why this tournament felt so fun is because even
- 16:19Speaker 1: when we would make it out of the group state, like,
- 16:21Speaker 1: The 2022 World Cup, we made it out of the
- 16:25Speaker 1: group stage and we had four total goals. Yeah. Right?
- 16:29Speaker 1: There were a lot of 0-0s, 1-1s. This time it
- 16:33Speaker 1: was like, oh, we had a game with four goals.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:37Speaker 1: We scored first in every game until this one. Yeah.
- 16:42Speaker 1: We definitely have improved compared to countries 20 through 190,
- 16:47Speaker 1: to your point. But I don't know if we can
- 16:49Speaker 1: get to the top five.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and, you know, it got me thinking about, like,
- 16:56Speaker 2: college football in some ways. You know? Like, you know,
- 17:00Speaker 2: I used to do a lot of comparing, like, when
- 17:02Speaker 2: I watched the World Cup to basketball. I'd call everything, like,
- 17:06Speaker 2: a fast break. I forget what they call it in
- 17:08Speaker 2: soccer when they got a fast break. But, you know, like,
- 17:10Speaker 2: I'd flip up the terms and everything else. But in
- 17:12Speaker 2: terms of the way that we are discussing this now,
- 17:15Speaker 2: we observe it. The parallel is obviously college football. For example,
- 17:20Speaker 2: you had the United States and Belgium. If it was
- 17:23Speaker 2: a college football matchup, they would have one of them trophies,
- 17:27Speaker 2: you know, because they have trophies for.
- 17:28Speaker 3: The big college football games. And it would be the
- 17:30Speaker 3: battle for Lumumba's tooth.
- 17:35Speaker 1: What would that trophy look like, bro?
- 17:37Speaker 3: It would look like Lumumba's tooth.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Okay. Just a direct look at it? Okay. Got you.
- 17:41Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:42Speaker 2: I know that might be a little awkward for some
- 17:44Speaker 2: of you people to hear, but that was a great line.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Anyway, and we.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Saw what happened in the battle for Lumumba's tooth, but
- 17:51Speaker 2: the fact that the U.S. lost in the round of 16,
- 17:54Speaker 2: in college football, we have what I like to call
- 17:59Speaker 2: an eight-win school.
- 18:01Speaker 3: There are some schools.
- 18:03Speaker 2: No matter who they are or where they go, they
- 18:06Speaker 2: are just eight-win schools. Texas A & M is the
- 18:10Speaker 2: grand example, and maybe that's what this comes down to,
- 18:12Speaker 2: that the United States is the Texas A & M
- 18:16Speaker 2: of the soccer world. We definitely have the first characteristic
- 18:19Speaker 2: you must have to be Texas A & M under
- 18:21Speaker 2: those circumstances, which is a very large population.
- 18:27Speaker 3: We got that. And number two, and most important, a
- 18:30Speaker 3: bunch of dorks as fans. But then on top of that,
- 18:34Speaker 3: Texas A & M has.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Just historically, no matter what the resources are, no matter
- 18:38Speaker 2: what shakes out, no matter what it comes down to.
- 18:41Speaker 3: It's an eight win school. You know what? Really more
- 18:43Speaker 3: like plus or minus 8.5. And that's just kind.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Of where we are.
- 18:47Speaker 4: It doesn't matter what changes, no matter who the new
- 18:50Speaker 4: coach is, don't matter what it is. They are right
- 18:53Speaker 4: there at 8.5. And maybe that's the thing with the U.S.,
- 18:59Speaker 4: simply an eight-win program. Our giant population does not entitle
- 19:03Speaker 4: this nation to be good at soccer.
- 19:04Speaker 3: The two countries with bigger populations than the United States
- 19:07Speaker 3: is China and India. India over there playing cricket, baby.
- 19:10Speaker 3: I don't know what they're doing over there at China,
- 19:12Speaker 3: but I'm just telling you, I ain't heard nothing about
- 19:14Speaker 3: them being there in the World Cup. maybe we just.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Like they're all kinds of like north carolina football the
- 19:19Speaker 2: sleeping giant right like every region has their sleeping giant
- 19:23Speaker 2: and then you look up and you are texas a &
- 19:25Speaker 2: m and you're like well how has washington played for
- 19:27Speaker 2: a national championship and we haven't that doesn't make any
- 19:31Speaker 2: sense right that's who we are that's that's.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Who the united states is just texas a & m.
- 19:38Speaker 1: It is a little surprising that we can't find our
- 19:40Speaker 1: Erling Holland, though. Yeah. Like, like, like, like, like sometimes
- 19:44Speaker 1: Texas A & M gets that quarterback and it's like, oh, damn. Yeah,
- 19:48Speaker 1: that was that was fun. Why can't we find Johnny football? Yeah.
- 19:52Speaker 3: You know what?
- 19:52Speaker 2: They found Johnny football. They went, they were, they were
- 19:55Speaker 2: 10 and two that year. And then they won the
- 19:57Speaker 2: ball game.
- 19:57Speaker 3: You are correct.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Every now and then the eight win team will win 10.
- 20:01Speaker 1: And I think that's what we're waiting for. Like it
- 20:04Speaker 1: one more win and it would have been, this is
- 20:08Speaker 1: a successful world's cup. And then it would have been like,
- 20:10Speaker 1: how do you perform against Spain? How do you measure
- 20:12Speaker 1: up against Spain? And after watching the game against Belgium,
- 20:15Speaker 1: they would have lost to Spain seven zero. Yeah. So like,
- 20:17Speaker 1: I'm very happy that we didn't get there, but yeah,
- 20:20Speaker 1: maybe there is some degree of acceptance that we have
- 20:22Speaker 1: to have, but Americans are not good at accepting anything
- 20:25Speaker 1: less than excellence. Yeah. But the nerve, I know American arrogance,
- 20:31Speaker 1: American exceptionalism. Yes, of course.
- 20:33Speaker 3: I mean, from 1950 to 94, did we not even
- 20:34Speaker 3: make it?
- 20:37Speaker 1: Yeah, no. Listen, I'm a bit of the stat guy
- 20:42Speaker 1: on the show, whatever, so we have the researcher kind
- 20:44Speaker 1: of assigned to my takes. A lot of my World
- 20:47Speaker 1: Cup takes were put into the context of since 1930.
- 20:49Speaker 1: And I was like, what happened in 1930? Well, we
- 20:54Speaker 1: finished in third place. I'm like, oh, were we awesome?
- 20:56Speaker 1: They're like, no, it was a small field, and they
- 20:58Speaker 1: didn't even have a semifinal game. I was like, oh, okay,
- 21:01Speaker 1: got it.
- 21:01Speaker 3: But think about this, right? For example, England.
- 21:04Speaker 2: England got a lot of people. You think they should
- 21:06Speaker 2: be good at this. We know they really, really care.
- 21:08Speaker 2: They haven't won since 1966 when they hosted the thing.
- 21:12Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. It's hard to win. It's hard
- 21:15Speaker 1: to win.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Right now, Brazil starting to feel like, I guess, USC.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Like y'all used to be good. Everybody kind of wanted
- 21:24Speaker 2: to be like y'all.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Where y'all at what's happening.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Now right brazil's drought from like o2 on is like
- 21:31Speaker 1: a national catastrophe.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Yes i mean they lost 12 to 1 or whatever
- 21:37Speaker 2: that was at the crib against germany in 2014 that's
- 21:40Speaker 2: one of the wild i didn't know it was possible
- 21:43Speaker 2: to do that in soccer yeah that.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Was that was a national embarrassment and we would kill
- 21:48Speaker 1: for a for a drought to be since 2002 but
- 21:50Speaker 1: like You know how this is going to go. This
- 21:53Speaker 1: is going to they're going to get crushed. They're going
- 21:55Speaker 1: to be disappointed. And we are going to four years
- 21:58Speaker 1: from now in Spain and Morocco and Portugal are hosting
- 22:01Speaker 1: the tournament. We're going to talk ourselves into the fact
- 22:03Speaker 1: that maybe why not us every year, every single time.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Do you disagree? We should. Why not? Why not?
- 22:13Speaker 3: It's every four years. You get a chance to build
- 22:15Speaker 3: it up. All you got to do.
- 22:16Speaker 2: And look, the expansion of the tournament has appeared to
- 22:18Speaker 2: be a very good thing, right? Everybody seemed to enjoy
- 22:22Speaker 2: this expanded tournament. It led to the potential. Cape Verde
- 22:25Speaker 2: almost shook up the whole thing.
- 22:28Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 22:28Speaker 1: Like everybody seems to appreciate it. 500,000 people that played
- 22:32Speaker 1: Spain to a draw and Argentina to a draw. And
- 22:36Speaker 1: one of the great stories in, you know, recent sports history. Yeah.
- 22:39Speaker 1: So like it was, the tournament i do think the
- 22:42Speaker 1: tournament is easy to fall for even if you don't
- 22:45Speaker 1: watch any soccer until the next world cup like just
- 22:48Speaker 1: the fan interest and the celebrations and the intensity of
- 22:53Speaker 1: the games and then single elimination i do think it's
- 22:56Speaker 1: an easy spectacle to fall for and so i'll be
- 22:58Speaker 1: there again four years from now.
- 23:00Speaker 2: It's this is the thing with the world cup though
- 23:02Speaker 2: and i realized this like I've been to a Real
- 23:05Speaker 2: Madrid match in Madrid. I went to Stanford Bridge and
- 23:09Speaker 2: saw Chelsea play last summer.
- 23:12Speaker 3: First match of the year. I pulled up for that.
- 23:16Speaker 2: But you'd be like, oh, they're so crazy about soccer
- 23:20Speaker 2: over there.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Yeah, but these are just regular season games. It don't
- 23:24Speaker 3: hit the same.
- 23:24Speaker 2: For me, it is hard to make that World Cup
- 23:27Speaker 2: transition into the other soccer because the games wind up
- 23:30Speaker 2: being of lower stakes.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I went to a World Cup game in 94 with
- 23:37Speaker 1: my dad. It was like an impressionable thing on how
- 23:40Speaker 1: much people cared. I was in Spain when Real Madrid
- 23:45Speaker 1: signed David Beckham. And I saw people partying and dancing
- 23:49Speaker 1: in the fountains like it was like a national holiday.
- 23:54Speaker 1: But I don't have an EPL team. You know, I
- 23:57Speaker 1: don't have an MLS team. So I'm with you. I'm
- 23:59Speaker 1: kind of, I think I might be at like my
- 24:02Speaker 1: cup runneth over. I don't know that I can all
- 24:05Speaker 1: of a sudden become a Chelsea fan right now or
- 24:08Speaker 1: a Real Madrid fan. I don't think I have it
- 24:10Speaker 1: in me. But again, I'll watch a Champions League final.
- 24:16Speaker 1: I'll watch a World Cup final. Sports at the highest
- 24:18Speaker 1: level with the highest stakes attached to it, it's pretty
- 24:21Speaker 1: easy for me to fall for.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Yeah, this is something. But now we get to watch
- 24:24Speaker 3: the rest of the tournament. That's the one thing I.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Do find is that once you start with the World Cup,
- 24:30Speaker 2: you're riding it out.
- 24:31Speaker 1: 100%. Yeah, I mean, listen, I think the Messi story
- 24:37Speaker 1: is unbelievable. Greatest of all time who won his World
- 24:40Speaker 1: Cup last time, and we didn't even know he was
- 24:42Speaker 1: going to play in this one, and he might win
- 24:44Speaker 1: the Golden Boot, might score the most goals. Kylian Mbappe
- 24:47Speaker 1: is incredible. Luminia Mall is 18 years old. Spain still
- 24:52Speaker 1: hasn't allowed a goal. They have not allowed a goal
- 24:55Speaker 1: in the entire tournament, and Erling Haaland... Looks like a
- 24:59Speaker 1: Viking warrior.
- 25:01Speaker 3: No, that dude there.
- 25:02Speaker 2: That was the thing watching Norway against Brazil. Norway ain't
- 25:06Speaker 2: got no terrible lineage of colonialism, so I didn't feel
- 25:09Speaker 2: bad about them winning necessarily. But dude, he looked like
- 25:12Speaker 2: he came out of Ice Cave just balling.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Listen, I am not under any sort of illusions about
- 25:20Speaker 1: my physical stature. I'm a skinny white dude with scoliosis.
- 25:25Speaker 1: I don't know if I could allow my wife to
- 25:27Speaker 1: watch the next Norway game. She was fawning. When Erling
- 25:32Speaker 1: Haaland scored that goal and turned around and didn't celebrate
- 25:36Speaker 1: and lifted his shirt and the dude jumped on his
- 25:38Speaker 1: back and he didn't even flinch.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Yeah. She liked refined sugar.
- 25:45Speaker 1: I was like, okay. I was like, I get it.
- 25:50Speaker 1: I understand he is everything that I am not, but
- 25:52Speaker 1: just keep it down a little.
- 25:54Speaker 2: We got some colonial battles coming up. We got France
- 25:57Speaker 2: versus Morocco. And, you know, the African countries are not
- 26:00Speaker 2: happy with Morocco after the way things went at AFCON. However,
- 26:03Speaker 2: they are playing against France. So it's go Rocco. Spain
- 26:08Speaker 2: versus Belgium. How can I root for the Hague? or cholera,
- 26:12Speaker 2: or any of these other things against them. I'm totally
- 26:14Speaker 2: about geopolitics when it comes down to this. We got
- 26:17Speaker 2: Norway and England. The Norwegians seem to be all right.
- 26:21Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? I think I'm going to rock.
- 26:23Speaker 3: It out with them on that one.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Their fans also seemed fun. Yes. Just like rowing in
- 26:29Speaker 1: Times Square, rowing at Cubs-Mets games at Citi Field, rowing
- 26:33Speaker 1: on the subway.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Yeah, but I ain't going to lie, man.
- 26:36Speaker 2: I forget which team it was they was playing against,
- 26:38Speaker 2: but they was playing against one of the really black teams,
- 26:41Speaker 2: and we ain't going to be talking about rowing no boat.
- 26:43Speaker 3: You understand what I'm saying? I know that Norway wasn't
- 26:45Speaker 3: really involved.
- 26:46Speaker 2: In that necessarily, but at the same time, I personally
- 26:49Speaker 2: felt like that hit me. I think it was against
- 26:51Speaker 2: Senegal it may have been, but.
- 26:53Speaker 3: I was like, oh, sore spot.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that That makes total sense. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:58Speaker 3: I just had to follow back.
- 26:59Speaker 2: We got Argentina against Egypt today and also Switzerland against Colombia.
- 27:08Speaker 1: I like Colombia's chances.
- 27:10Speaker 3: I'm down for that. Let me tell you something, brother.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Colombia seems like it would have been fun in a
- 27:15Speaker 1: different life for me.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I went to a Colombia-Brazil friendly in Miami in 2014.
- 27:21Speaker 2: I bet it was friendly. I didn't know they made
- 27:23Speaker 2: jerseys that small. It was amazing. Coming up next, we're going.
- 27:30Speaker 3: To talk some NBA.

- 31:23Speaker 3: Thanks to Raycon for sponsoring. All right, we are back
- 31:27Speaker 3: with Danny Parkins.
- 31:29Speaker 2: I realize I did not get to talk about this
- 31:31Speaker 2: on my NBA show that I did on Monday, but
- 31:34Speaker 2: I think it's perfect for you where we talked about
- 31:36Speaker 2: this and you hadn't realized it before I mentioned it,
- 31:38Speaker 2: but young Danny Parkins definitely would have had an Austin
- 31:41Speaker 2: Reeves jersey. And now I'm looking at the Lakers and
- 31:43Speaker 2: I don't know how you would choose.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Oh, no, you would still be Austin Reeves. The headband,
- 31:52Speaker 1: American born, the shooter. Yeah, it would have been Austin
- 31:57Speaker 1: Reeves for sure. I wanted to be John Paxson and
- 31:59Speaker 1: Steve Kerr. Wow.
- 32:01Speaker 3: No ambition about you.
- 32:03Speaker 1: None. None. I mean, Jordan was my favorite, obviously. And
- 32:07Speaker 1: then Rodman, I was enamored with, obviously. But like, you know,
- 32:11Speaker 1: I knew what it was at a pretty early age.
- 32:14Speaker 1: He had no ambition about me. It's hilarious. Yeah, that
- 32:18Speaker 1: is 100% spot on. And yeah, listen, this Lakers thing
- 32:23Speaker 1: is interesting because I agree. Luka... Needs a center like
- 32:31Speaker 1: Luca wants a center, right? You want to do what
- 32:35Speaker 1: Luca wants because obviously you need Luca to commit to
- 32:38Speaker 1: you long term or else what the hell was the
- 32:40Speaker 1: purpose of all of this stuff? And Walker Kessler is
- 32:44Speaker 1: a center who is good, who will catch lob passes
- 32:49Speaker 1: from Luca. But, man, I don't know what the ceiling
- 32:52Speaker 1: is of a Walker Kessler, Austin Reeves, Luka Doncic team is.
- 32:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, and Walker Kessler is really talented, too.
- 32:58Speaker 1: He is.
- 32:58Speaker 3: He's really good.
- 33:00Speaker 2: You know, Danny Ainge, by the way, boy, he ain't
- 33:02Speaker 2: selling low on nothing. Like, I can only imagine the
- 33:05Speaker 2: way Danny Ainge, like, sucked through his teeth when he
- 33:07Speaker 2: saw the return to Brad Stevens. Guy for Jalen Brown.
- 33:11Speaker 2: That never would have been Danny Ainge. Danny Ainge got
- 33:14Speaker 2: all these picks back for the Lakers for these guys.
- 33:17Speaker 2: All I'm saying with the Lakers is, and hey, man,
- 33:19Speaker 2: most of these cats can hoop for what I can tell.
- 33:22Speaker 2: I'm just saying you don't wind up with that many
- 33:24Speaker 2: white boys by accident. It's not possible.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Like, they are, they are.
- 33:28Speaker 3: They run in the program.
- 33:29Speaker 2: They're going to be screaming DEI at them boys when
- 33:32Speaker 2: they go play on the road.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Would you feel better if multiple of the white guys
- 33:36Speaker 1: were Europeans?
- 33:39Speaker 3: It's not even about better or worse, right?
- 33:43Speaker 1: Monochromatic?
- 33:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't have a problem with the fact that
- 33:46Speaker 3: they're doing it.
- 33:47Speaker 1: No, I meant like for basketball prospects. Oh, wow.
- 33:50Speaker 2: That's a good question because they got one European dude,
- 33:52Speaker 2: the dude with all the letters in his name.
- 33:54Speaker 3: I had never heard of him. Sandro.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, but I mean, in terms of the
- 34:00Speaker 1: main characters, Bo, is what I'm talking about.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, Austin Reeves, Walker Kessler, Luka Doncic, poor Dalton Konek,
- 34:09Speaker 2: who probably been complaining that being white is holding him back.
- 34:11Speaker 3: No, no, no. Quentin Grimes, by the way, his mama white.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Oh.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, man. I'm telling you, they taking this
- 34:19Speaker 3: experiment a long way.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Colin Sexton, I saw they signed him, and I was like,
- 34:22Speaker 2: there must be some sort of mistake.
- 34:25Speaker 5: Ha, ha, ha.
- 34:27Speaker 3: That couldn't have possibly been on purpose.
- 34:31Speaker 1: And I mean, Bronny's going to be around day after
- 34:34Speaker 1: the contract is guaranteed. Bronny's going to be there.
- 34:36Speaker 3: His dad did was solid.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Although I continued, everybody knew what was going on, but
- 34:40Speaker 2: still like, but they, that was, that was nice of
- 34:43Speaker 2: the Lakers.
- 34:44Speaker 3: They did. They, they didn't have to do that.
- 34:46Speaker 1: I thought, I mean, listen, am I, am I completely
- 34:51Speaker 1: delusional or is Bronny going to get meaningful minutes for them?
- 34:57Speaker 3: That's a good question, right?
- 34:59Speaker 1: Like I feel, I feel like Bronny, like Bronny is
- 35:03Speaker 1: not going to start for them, but Bronny is going
- 35:06Speaker 1: to play a role of perimeter defense as a sub
- 35:13Speaker 1: for them. Like I, I absolutely think Bronny is a
- 35:16Speaker 1: regular on the Lakers next year, just kind of given
- 35:18Speaker 1: the makeup of their team as it's presently constituted. Unless I,
- 35:22Speaker 1: unless I am missing something. I feel like Bronny is
- 35:25Speaker 1: a defensive sub who gives them energy and plays like
- 35:27Speaker 1: 15 minutes a night.
- 35:29Speaker 3: A night.
- 35:30Speaker 2: Ooh, I think he might play some nights. We think
- 35:33Speaker 2: he's getting like Colin Sexton. I think he's getting those
- 35:36Speaker 2: minutes that you're talking about.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Okay. I mean, I'm going to, I'm going to pull
- 35:43Speaker 1: up the whole thing here. If we're going to, if
- 35:44Speaker 1: we're going to deep dive on the Lakers nine man rotation,
- 35:48Speaker 1: in July. Let's see what we got here.
- 35:50Speaker 2: I mean, from what I can tell here, it looks
- 35:52Speaker 2: like the nine guys, or at least the eight, Dodgers, Reeves, Grimes, Kessler,
- 35:58Speaker 2: Colin Sexton, Sandro, that Jake LaRavia guy, is he going
- 36:02Speaker 2: to get to play?
- 36:03Speaker 3: I would imagine so.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I forgot Jaden Hardy. Okay, I mean, maybe not
- 36:10Speaker 1: 15 minutes a night. Maybe not.
- 36:14Speaker 2: But the fact that this is a discussion I don't
- 36:16Speaker 2: feel like is a good sign.
- 36:18Speaker 1: No, probably not. Probably not. Listen, Luka led the league
- 36:26Speaker 1: in scoring last year and was, what, fourth for MVP
- 36:32Speaker 1: and losing LeBron and adding Walker Kessler is a the
- 36:41Speaker 1: basketball fit around Luca makes a little bit more sense, right?
- 36:44Speaker 1: Luca is not LeBron's obviously was incredible last year. We're
- 36:47Speaker 1: not saying that, but just like, it at least makes
- 36:49Speaker 1: a little bit more sense to have pieces on the
- 36:51Speaker 1: basketball floor who do different things. Right. It's just like,
- 36:54Speaker 1: that's the most rudimentary analysis here possible. So I do
- 36:58Speaker 1: think they are maybe moving in the direction of being
- 37:02Speaker 1: a team that makes more sense eventually, but, But that's
- 37:06Speaker 1: not a top four seed in the West.
- 37:08Speaker 2: And they don't have any flexibility because they don't have
- 37:10Speaker 2: any draft picks until I turn 50 years old.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Right. So I think that they are going to be
- 37:18Speaker 1: a team that is hoping to avoid the play-in in
- 37:23Speaker 1: the Western Conference unless Walker Kessler has another level that
- 37:27Speaker 1: he can get to that I just currently don't see.
- 37:30Speaker 2: And I'd just like to throw this out here that
- 37:33Speaker 2: if you trade for Luka Doncic.
- 37:36Speaker 2: And you just become a play-in team basically yeah that
- 37:42Speaker 2: trade's a failure oh not necessarily i'm not saying it's his.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Fault that it does this or not but that's a failure.
- 37:51Speaker 1: I mean listen the team that he took in dallas
- 37:56Speaker 1: yes it had kairi and that's not i'm not trying
- 37:58Speaker 1: to like well actually kairi kairi is an all-timer but
- 38:03Speaker 1: mean Gafford and lively and like you you should be
- 38:06Speaker 1: able to build out a team that resembles that team
- 38:09Speaker 1: around Luca it's not it's not like an impossibility here
- 38:13Speaker 1: like there are there are he should not be that
- 38:16Speaker 1: difficult I know he's ball dominant but he should not
- 38:19Speaker 1: be that difficult to build to build a team around
- 38:23Speaker 1: and I think the Lakers have kind of hard capped
- 38:27Speaker 1: their ceiling and I remember when we talked about this
- 38:32Speaker 1: four months ago like is, is Austin Reeves really going
- 38:36Speaker 1: to be the member of a big three? And he's like, man,
- 38:40Speaker 1: they gave him $ 180 million and he is an excellent
- 38:42Speaker 1: offensive basketball player. So like, yes, but I don't think
- 38:47Speaker 1: that he is the right type of guy to play
- 38:50Speaker 1: off of Luca. You need like three and D guys.
- 38:54Speaker 1: You need guys who are pluses on the defensive end
- 38:56Speaker 1: of the floor. I, I just don't think your best
- 38:59Speaker 1: guys can like, you can have multiple best guys be
- 39:02Speaker 1: defensive liabilities, which is by the way, why I was
- 39:04Speaker 1: so anti the Knicks, but everybody else on the team
- 39:07Speaker 1: was awesome at defense. And like we talked about Carl
- 39:10Speaker 1: Anthony towns stopped being a liability on the defensive end
- 39:14Speaker 1: of the floor. Right. He remembered he was seven feet tall.
- 39:16Speaker 1: He jumped, he tried, he rebounded. It was whatever, but
- 39:19Speaker 1: like Luca and Austin Reeves are not going to become
- 39:22Speaker 1: plus defensive players. It's just not going to happen. So,
- 39:25Speaker 1: I think there's a really low ceiling on that team.
- 39:27Speaker 3: Well, let me ask this question. Do you think that
- 39:31Speaker 3: Austin Reeves is a better player than Jalen Brown?
- 39:35Speaker 1: No. Okay.
- 39:36Speaker 2: And the Celtics just decided that you can't really pay
- 39:40Speaker 2: your number two guy the kind of money that the
- 39:44Speaker 2: Lakers are paying Austin Reeves to be the number two guy.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Right, but the Celtics also seem to be saying that
- 39:53Speaker 1: what Jalen Brown gives you can be replaced with a
- 39:57Speaker 1: $ 40 million player instead of a soon-to-be $ 55, $ 60 million player.
- 40:05Speaker 1: I guess I trust Brad Stevens and the analytics on that,
- 40:08Speaker 1: but Yeah.
- 40:09Speaker 3: But I guess my point is, but like, if you're
- 40:11Speaker 3: not giving that.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Money to Jalen Brown, second player, right?
- 40:14Speaker 2: Yeah. But if you don't want to give that money
- 40:15Speaker 2: to Jalen Brown, do you want to give that money
- 40:17Speaker 2: to Austin Reeves?
- 40:18Speaker 3: Like that's, that's where the, like, I feel like.
- 40:20Speaker 2: The new paradigm of the NBA and maybe Palenka and
- 40:23Speaker 2: those guys are behind on it where it used to
- 40:25Speaker 2: be a no brainer that you give your number two
- 40:26Speaker 2: guy that money.
- 40:28Speaker 3: That's not a no brainer anymore.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Right. But I guess what I'm saying is, is that it,
- 40:32Speaker 1: is it, I don't know that it's the money. Like,
- 40:35Speaker 1: Is the argument that Austin Reeves is a better analytics
- 40:37Speaker 1: player than Jalen Brown because he shoots threes, and therefore
- 40:41Speaker 1: he spreads the floor, and therefore he makes it easier
- 40:44Speaker 1: for everybody else. I don't think that... What's a good
- 40:48Speaker 1: example in the NBA right now? I'm trying to think. Obviously,
- 40:54Speaker 1: the Knicks have no... I mean, Brunson took an under-market deal,
- 40:57Speaker 1: but I don't know. I don't think it's the salary
- 41:00Speaker 1: slot as much as you need the players to complement
- 41:03Speaker 1: each other. The wool... The Timberwolves, like, Ann Edwards, amazing scorer.
- 41:08Speaker 1: Rudy Gobert, amazing defensive player. Like, they are... They're paying
- 41:12Speaker 1: for top-of-the-market players at people who do very different things. Whereas, like,
- 41:18Speaker 1: Luka and Austin Reeves are just... They're very similar basketball players.
- 41:23Speaker 1: And I know that's ridiculous, but, like.
- 41:25Speaker 3: No, no, no, but that makes sense.
- 41:26Speaker 1: They are defensive liabilities who are offensive players, who are shooters,
- 41:30Speaker 1: who are minus athletes. Like, I just... I think it's
- 41:34Speaker 1: more about diversifying your talent, not necessarily the money aspect
- 41:39Speaker 1: of it.
- 41:39Speaker 2: Though I'll say, Stevens specifically said that we didn't want
- 41:43Speaker 2: to tie 70% of our cap up with two guys.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Yes, no doubt. And he clearly... Brad Stevens is one
- 41:50Speaker 1: of the smartest people in sports. And Jalen Brown kind
- 41:54Speaker 1: of did stuff that Boston... Like, Jalen Brown attacks the basket.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Jalen Brown's a slasher. Like, he's not just a guy
- 42:00Speaker 1: who floats out and shoots threes. So, like, I... I'm
- 42:03Speaker 1: still shocked by the Jalen Brown thing. Yeah. Gobsmacked by,
- 42:07Speaker 1: by the entire thing. So I'm clear. I'm clearly wrong.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Like maybe Brad Stevens would say Austin Reeves is much
- 42:13Speaker 1: better than Jalen Brown. I don't know.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Yeah, no, this is, this is going to be a
- 42:18Speaker 2: really interesting NBA season because Adam Silver got what he
- 42:23Speaker 2: and the owners wanted, which is the notion of parody.
- 42:25Speaker 2: that I am still not certain it makes the NBA better.
- 42:28Speaker 2: I like the long run dynasty saga. I still prefer that.
- 42:32Speaker 2: But I also acknowledge that I, for the majority of
- 42:38Speaker 2: my life, have observed the NBA as a fan of
- 42:40Speaker 2: the league, not as a fan of a team. So
- 42:43Speaker 2: that the idea that, oh, maybe my team is a
- 42:45Speaker 2: move or two away from being good does not add
- 42:47Speaker 2: to the intrigue of the NBA for me because I'm
- 42:49Speaker 2: not personally invested. and what one team ultimately does. But
- 42:54Speaker 2: it does feel like everybody looks around and is like, well,
- 42:57Speaker 2: if maybe we just do this one thing, maybe we
- 43:01Speaker 2: could get hot in the postseason and then go from there.
- 43:05Speaker 3: But then at the same time, have you seen this
- 43:07Speaker 3: Donovan Mitchell deal?
- 43:09Speaker 1: I did. That's a lot of money.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Donovan Mitchell just signed an extension. It was at four
- 43:13Speaker 2: years for $ 273 million on top of a $ 60 million
- 43:15Speaker 2: deal last year of his deal that he already has
- 43:22Speaker 2: set up. And look, I can be wrong here, but
- 43:25Speaker 2: I feel like the lessons of the cap that we're
- 43:27Speaker 2: seeing around the league say, you don't pay him $ 70 million.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Yeah, listen, I agree with you. The undersized guard, Jalen Brunson,
- 43:39Speaker 1: just turned that on its head. But I was like,
- 43:41Speaker 1: I'm out on.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Trey Young, Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, Jalen Brunson. Like I
- 43:48Speaker 1: was like going down the direction of like, I got
- 43:50Speaker 1: a type and it's not the small guard who's a
- 43:52Speaker 1: defensive liability. And so Mitchell would not have been a
- 43:56Speaker 1: guy that I would have been thrilled to do that for.
- 43:59Speaker 1: I do think like him being willing to sign early
- 44:03Speaker 1: and sign another contract extension in Cleveland, like free agency
- 44:08Speaker 1: in the NBA is dead. It is dead. teams are
- 44:11Speaker 1: trading for guys into their cap space. Now they're not
- 44:14Speaker 1: waiting for players to hit free agency and then just
- 44:16Speaker 1: have like, you know, an open bidding on guys. So
- 44:20Speaker 1: if you have a top 10 to 15 player in
- 44:22Speaker 1: the league who wants to commit to you and your Cleveland,
- 44:27Speaker 1: I think you are just, you're kind of stuck and
- 44:30Speaker 1: you just say like, well, we're going to do it
- 44:32Speaker 1: and he's been loyal to us. So we're going to
- 44:34Speaker 1: be loyal to him. And maybe that's like nostalgia and
- 44:37Speaker 1: terrible business, but I don't, I don't know what moves
- 44:41Speaker 1: they had if he was willing to sign that deal. Like,
- 44:43Speaker 1: I guess, I guess trade him is the, is the answer,
- 44:46Speaker 1: but they think they're going to get LeBron. So yeah.
- 44:50Speaker 1: And like, they think they're getting him.
- 44:52Speaker 2: I mean, the Cleveland thing is interesting because they're the
- 44:55Speaker 2: only team we've ever seen to get farther than they
- 44:57Speaker 2: have gotten before, which is to get to the conference finals.
- 45:00Speaker 3: And the thought from watching them was, you know, I don't.
- 45:02Speaker 5: Know if you guys thought about tearing this down, but yeah, listen, I, God,
- 45:08Speaker 5: I think because it's a it's a group of players
- 45:11Speaker 5: that individually are talented and feels like they should be
- 45:14Speaker 5: better than they are, even though they were successful.
- 45:16Speaker 1: But it's like Evan Mobley been a little bit of
- 45:18Speaker 1: a disappointment. Donovan Mitchell in the playoffs, at least with
- 45:21Speaker 1: the results, been a little bit of a disappointment. Harden,
- 45:24Speaker 1: well documented. Then Jared Allen is just like a nice
- 45:29Speaker 1: piece who's there. But again, I don't they're willing to
- 45:34Speaker 1: pay the luxury tax. I respect them for that. They
- 45:37Speaker 1: have made aggressive moves. I respect them for that. And
- 45:41Speaker 1: if they go get LeBron, I don't know how it
- 45:43Speaker 1: works with LeBron and James Harden and Donovan Mitchell all
- 45:47Speaker 1: in one perimeter. That seems, again, like a defensive liability.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Where's your wing defense? I don't know. But if LeBron's
- 45:59Speaker 1: going to sign for the minimum, based on that board
- 46:02Speaker 1: that Rich Paul puts up, It literally looks like LeBron
- 46:05Speaker 1: James is going to play for a minimum contract this year.
- 46:12Speaker 1: He would make anybody better. Like, literally any team.
- 46:15Speaker 3: Well, the problem, obviously, is that you can't win with
- 46:17Speaker 3: James Harden.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Period.
- 46:20Speaker 3: I think we've got 17 years of evidence to indicate this.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, is the ball even going to be
- 46:26Speaker 1: in his hands if LeBron is on the team? Right.
- 46:28Speaker 3: Which then raises the question, what's the point of having
- 46:30Speaker 3: James Harden?
- 46:31Speaker 1: Right. I know. I... I liked the Harden trade because
- 46:37Speaker 1: I didn't like the idea of giving Darius Garland and
- 46:39Speaker 1: his bad toes another $ 178 million. Obviously, that flamed out
- 46:45Speaker 1: on me in horrible fashion. But I really don't think
- 46:49Speaker 1: that LeBron and Harden next to each other makes a
- 46:52Speaker 1: lick of sense. Is Harden just going to be a
- 46:54Speaker 1: catch-and-shoot three guy who also can't play defense? I don't know.
- 46:57Speaker 1: I have no idea what they're doing.
- 46:58Speaker 3: No, they're stuck.
- 47:00Speaker 2: I agree with you that I think LeBron going back
- 47:03Speaker 2: to Cleveland– The last two times LeBron has decided to
- 47:07Speaker 2: go somewhere, it was only kind of sort of basketball related.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Like he has his own reasons for doing things, which,
- 47:14Speaker 2: by the way, is the case that most people have
- 47:17Speaker 2: when they change jobs.
- 47:18Speaker 3: Like, you know, it's.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Not like it's not like every chef is trying to
- 47:22Speaker 2: go to McDonald's because they want to work for the
- 47:23Speaker 2: number one.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 47:24Speaker 2: This isn't you know, there's a million different reasons why
- 47:26Speaker 2: you wind up doing something. And so if he goes there,
- 47:30Speaker 2: I think there's less pressure on him there. than there
- 47:34Speaker 2: is anywhere else. I don't even know how much pressure
- 47:36Speaker 2: really matters to him anymore, but I do think that
- 47:39Speaker 2: that becomes a really weird fit.
- 47:43Speaker 3: If you try to squeeze him in there.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, listen, Harden declined the option, in theory,
- 47:48Speaker 1: to open up money for them, and he was going
- 47:49Speaker 1: to sign elsewhere. Maybe there's a sign in trade, and
- 47:55Speaker 1: Harden becomes a different piece, and then the team all
- 47:58Speaker 1: of a sudden makes more... If you could trade James
- 48:00Speaker 1: Harden for a wing... Maybe that team makes more sense.
- 48:05Speaker 1: I think LeBron, and this is maybe totally naive as
- 48:08Speaker 1: a talking head, but I think LeBron has reached some
- 48:12Speaker 1: level of post-criticism. Like, where could he go that he
- 48:16Speaker 1: would really be criticized?
- 48:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you're still playing in year 24.
- 48:20Speaker 1: Yeah, right, right. It's out. Like, if he went to
- 48:24Speaker 1: the Spurs, like, I mean, yeah, he'd be ring-chasing. But
- 48:30Speaker 1: it would be Wemby's team. It would be understandable. It
- 48:36Speaker 1: would be an interesting, it would be a perfect basketball fit.
- 48:39Speaker 1: Like it is kind of what they, exactly what they need.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Like I don't really see a team that he could
- 48:45Speaker 1: go to where other than the people who just criticize
- 48:48Speaker 1: everything that LeBron does at every waking moment. Like if
- 48:51Speaker 1: he goes and plays in Golden State, it's like, okay,
- 48:53Speaker 1: you're not trying to win. You're trying to hang out
- 48:54Speaker 1: with your boys. I get it. If you go to Cleveland,
- 48:58Speaker 1: you're trying to go home. I get it. If you
- 49:00Speaker 1: go to South Beach, I don't think that team has
- 49:02Speaker 1: enough shooting to really win, but Miami seems cool. You've
- 49:06Speaker 1: won there before. Where other than, I guess, the Knicks,
- 49:12Speaker 1: would he catch a ton of heat?
- 49:14Speaker 2: Where I think it would be cool for him to
- 49:15Speaker 2: go to Miami is just to solidify getting the jerseys.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Retirement.
- 49:21Speaker 2: Like nobody, no one will wear number six there again
- 49:24Speaker 2: because Bill Russell, right? But, you know, it was a
- 49:27Speaker 2: little acrimonious on the way out of there. And, you know,
- 49:33Speaker 2: I don't know why I'm now like really caught up
- 49:35Speaker 2: in jersey retirement stuff. For example, Kawhi Leonard is tying
- 49:38Speaker 2: up the loose ends in Toronto. to get the Jersey retirement.
- 49:42Speaker 2: I'm not saying that's his reason.
- 49:43Speaker 1: You don't think he was always getting, I mean, I.
- 49:46Speaker 3: So this is my thought on that. I think, I think, right.
- 49:49Speaker 2: I think it should have been a no brainer, but
- 49:51Speaker 2: I don't know what you do with a guy that
- 49:52Speaker 2: only was in town.
- 49:53Speaker 1: For eight months. I think you put his jersey right
- 49:57Speaker 1: next to the one with the title.
- 49:58Speaker 3: I agree.
- 50:00Speaker 1: We don't have it.
- 50:01Speaker 3: But this, I think, wrapping it up there, right? If
- 50:03Speaker 3: he comes in and helps Scottie Barnes, you tie it up.
- 50:06Speaker 1: Okay, cool.
- 50:07Speaker 2: He's not apparently getting it in San Antonio because they
- 50:10Speaker 2: gave it away.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Right.
- 50:11Speaker 3: They gave his number to Dylan Harper, which is crazy.
- 50:14Speaker 2: That's up there with Denver and the fact that they
- 50:16Speaker 2: gave Anthony Randolph Carmelo's number before he even got to Jokic.
- 50:20Speaker 1: Like, come on, man.
- 50:21Speaker 3: Are you guys really that salty? around here about these things.
- 50:25Speaker 1: Right well like listen that's why the bulls like i
- 50:27Speaker 1: thought i thought it was deserved but like that's why
- 50:29Speaker 1: the bulls had to retire derrick rose's number they tried
- 50:31Speaker 1: to give out number one to somebody and like the
- 50:34Speaker 1: city mutinied.
- 50:35Speaker 2: No no no that building is still on the west
- 50:37Speaker 2: side i forget.
- 50:42Speaker 1: Who it was but like for like a day This
- 50:44Speaker 1: dude wore number one and everyone was like, that's absolutely unacceptable. No, no,
- 50:48Speaker 1: we're not having this.
- 50:48Speaker 3: Not having it.
- 50:49Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, no.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Like, it's so sad that he became a polarizing figure
- 50:53Speaker 2: in Chicago because he means something so completely different to
- 50:56Speaker 2: that city. And what it like, what he represents from
- 50:58Speaker 2: the era in time that he came from is like, oh,
- 51:02Speaker 2: come on, man.
- 51:03Speaker 1: You guys. Yeah, it was. Listen, and Omar. A very
- 51:07Speaker 1: little of it was his fault with like misspeaking about
- 51:10Speaker 1: wanting to be able to like walk at meetings in
- 51:11Speaker 1: the future and stuff like that. Like he got some
- 51:13Speaker 1: bad advice, but yeah, no, the things that the bulls
- 51:15Speaker 1: organization did to hang him out to dry. And it
- 51:18Speaker 1: was terrible that the city turned on him. Now they're,
- 51:20Speaker 1: they're all the way back, but it was that, that
- 51:22Speaker 1: was really rough. Do you think KD will have his
- 51:25Speaker 1: Jersey retired anywhere?
- 51:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Golden state. They've made it clear. They're going to do that.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Someday Oklahoma city is going to get over it.
- 51:32Speaker 1: They should, they got to, they should.
- 51:36Speaker 2: I think even with the title they won with Shea
- 51:38Speaker 2: and everything else, Kevin Durant's the most important player in
- 51:41Speaker 2: the history of the franchise. I think Russell Westbrook will
- 51:43Speaker 2: ultimately be the most beloved player just because of the,
- 51:46Speaker 2: you know, it was what he did the year after
- 51:49Speaker 2: Durant left.
- 51:50Speaker 3: But no, no, no. They legitimized that franchise and made
- 51:52Speaker 3: that good immediately in that place that You know.
- 51:56Speaker 2: Very nice of the league to allow them to have
- 51:58Speaker 2: a team. And that is because of Kevin Durant. So
- 52:01Speaker 2: like I think Golden State will do it. And I
- 52:04Speaker 2: think that Oklahoma City, I still can't believe they still
- 52:06Speaker 2: boo him.
- 52:07Speaker 1: But yeah, that's the thing. That's I guess what was
- 52:10Speaker 1: kind of more in my in my head about it.
- 52:11Speaker 1: And you're right. Golden State probably. Yeah, they should. They will.
- 52:15Speaker 1: But yeah, the Oklahoma City thing is booing him is crazy, man.
- 52:20Speaker 3: They are still mad, right?
- 52:24Speaker 2: I felt like a lot of that around him, there
- 52:27Speaker 2: was a certain mimicry to the way that we tolerated
- 52:30Speaker 2: the way that the people in Cleveland acted about LeBron.
- 52:34Speaker 2: But when LeBron said he wanted to come back, a
- 52:36Speaker 2: lot of that, a lot of them are still mad,
- 52:38Speaker 2: by the way. They didn't get over it, but they
- 52:40Speaker 2: were like, yeah, come on.
- 52:42Speaker 1: Of course.
- 52:44Speaker 3: That's what's happening in Miami. All that, man, fuck him, da-da-da-da.
- 52:49Speaker 3: Even at 41 years old, they're like.
- 52:51Speaker 1: All right, come on. Yeah, it'd probably be better to
- 52:54Speaker 1: have the ball in LeBron's hand than Davion Mitchell. Come
- 52:56Speaker 1: on home. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We'll forgive. We'll forgive.
- 53:00Speaker 2: I mean, I'll never forget this with LeBron in Miami because,
- 53:03Speaker 2: I mean, Pat was salty, right?
- 53:05Speaker 3: Like, they never entertained. It wasn't just that they hadn't entertained.
- 53:09Speaker 2: The possibility that LeBron wouldn't come back. They really never
- 53:12Speaker 2: entertained the possibility he would go back to Cleveland after
- 53:16Speaker 2: that Dan Gilbert letter, and they felt like in so
- 53:19Speaker 2: many words, that they was the good white folks. Why
- 53:23Speaker 2: would you go back to that guy?
- 53:26Speaker 3: He talked about the way he talked about.
- 53:28Speaker 1: You, right?
- 53:29Speaker 3: They just, LeBron, I mean, and to be fair, I
- 53:32Speaker 3: thought the same thing.
- 53:33Speaker 1: That comics fan's letter was remarkable. Yeah, it was kind
- 53:41Speaker 1: of wild, man.
- 53:42Speaker 2: LeBron had his own reasons and rationale. But Christmas that year,
- 53:48Speaker 2: cleveland played in miami and they did the video tribute
- 53:52Speaker 2: that as i recall they did it but i don't
- 53:55Speaker 2: think pat was like too happy about it and i
- 53:57Speaker 2: remember lebron got really choked up because he got the
- 54:00Speaker 2: ovation and he didn't even want to fully acknowledge it
- 54:02Speaker 2: because you could tell it hit him in a much
- 54:05Speaker 2: different way like i think that he viewed miami as
- 54:08Speaker 2: a means to an end um yeah learn how to
- 54:11Speaker 2: win but it was also with like look man nothing
- 54:15Speaker 2: will ever be like what those four years were And
- 54:17Speaker 2: I think after he got past year one, I can't
- 54:20Speaker 2: imagine that he had more fun anywhere than he did
- 54:23Speaker 2: those middle two years in Miami. The NBA will never
- 54:27Speaker 2: feel like it felt, especially those middle two years in Miami.
- 54:31Speaker 2: And so if he went back there, I think that
- 54:35Speaker 2: would be a tidier ending for all the stuff for
- 54:38Speaker 2: him in his career than it would be going to Cleveland.
- 54:41Speaker 3: I think he already tied that up.
- 54:43Speaker 1: I mean, he definitely tied it up. I just think, listen,
- 54:51Speaker 1: I'm clearly, we all try to get in his head,
- 54:53Speaker 1: but I thought your business is in L.A., you're building
- 54:58Speaker 1: your mega mansion forever home in L.A., your kid is
- 55:02Speaker 1: on the team. I thought he was going to stay
- 55:05Speaker 1: in L.A. for forever. How could you, I'm not saying
- 55:10Speaker 1: he's bored of playing with Bronny, but how could you
- 55:12Speaker 1: play with your son in the NBA? And be like,
- 55:16Speaker 1: I want to do something else.
- 55:17Speaker 3: Yeah, well, when the team is like.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Right, right. I get it.
- 55:23Speaker 2: And also, he's clearly willing to take the minimum for
- 55:26Speaker 2: a lot of teams.
- 55:27Speaker 1: Not LA.
- 55:28Speaker 3: Not them.
- 55:29Speaker 1: Yeah, right. No, that is correct. Because, yeah, that is
- 55:32Speaker 1: exactly right. But, so, I guess the storybook, it started here,
- 55:37Speaker 1: it ends here. His.
- 55:41Speaker 1: Dwayne Wade isn't on the heat anymore, right? Like, sure,
- 55:44Speaker 1: he has a relationship with Bam, but, like, man, I even, like, thought, like,
- 55:48Speaker 1: could he go to the Wizards and do better than
- 55:50Speaker 1: Jordan did with the Wizards and go play with AD
- 55:52Speaker 1: and DeBansa?
- 55:53Speaker 2: Yo, that would be the most Jordan-obsessed thing that he
- 55:56Speaker 2: could possibly do would be to.
- 55:58Speaker 3: Go to the Wizards, wear number 23. Right.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and, like, DeBansa, he's always complimented Trey Young's game. Sar... AD,
- 56:12Speaker 1: I don't know, the East. It's interesting. They didn't make
- 56:17Speaker 1: it on that whiteboard, and so I was like, oh, damn,
- 56:19Speaker 1: all right, my half-baked idea didn't even come through. Didn't
- 56:21Speaker 1: even make the 10 teams on the whiteboard.
- 56:23Speaker 3: LeBron remains compelling.
- 56:26Speaker 2: And I say this again as somebody who's ready for
- 56:29Speaker 2: this to be over, but it is amazing. We just
- 56:31Speaker 2: start running through it, and it's like, wow, there are
- 56:33Speaker 2: still so many angles and so many things that surround him.
- 56:37Speaker 1: I mean, I did... like a five minute, like somewhat
- 56:42Speaker 1: tongue in cheek, but somewhat real, like analysis of that
- 56:46Speaker 1: whiteboard on the show. I could have done three hours
- 56:49Speaker 1: and five minutes, like in my radio days, like it's
- 56:53Speaker 1: adding LeBron James at 42 on a minimum deal to
- 56:57Speaker 1: any team in the NBA is fast. Like the nuggets
- 56:59Speaker 1: were on the board. Yeah. Are they just going to
- 57:01Speaker 1: try to set the scoring record? Like Jamal Murray, LeBron
- 57:04Speaker 1: James and Jokic on the same team would be outrageous.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Everybody's always open.
- 57:10Speaker 1: It would be outrageous. The things that would happen on
- 57:14Speaker 1: that team, Minnesota. Well, mellow ball and LeBron.
- 57:19Speaker 2: Hey man, have you seen, but have you seen these
- 57:21Speaker 2: pictures of LeBron? And if they're AI, I mean, you
- 57:24Speaker 2: never know these days, but these pictures of LeBron since
- 57:26Speaker 2: the season ended and his beard is like extra gray.
- 57:30Speaker 3: Lamello ball might make that shit fall out that's.
- 57:32Speaker 1: What i'm saying like i i was thinking about chris
- 57:35Speaker 1: finch when like chris finch like it's like oh thank
- 57:38Speaker 1: god we traded uh julius ran he's moping around great
- 57:43Speaker 1: we're gonna get we're gonna get serious around here finally
- 57:45Speaker 1: hey coach we're bringing in lamello he's like what chris
- 57:53Speaker 1: finch is gonna have an aneurysm the poor.
- 57:55Speaker 2: Guy but I talked about this the other day, though.
- 57:58Speaker 2: I think we're underselling what the high end of this
- 58:00Speaker 2: could be. Anthony Evans and LaMelo Ball in the same backcourt?
- 58:03Speaker 1: Listen, I respect the swing, and I do think that
- 58:07Speaker 1: the argument of basically, like, Oklahoma City and San Antonio
- 58:11Speaker 1: exist in this world over here, and we need to
- 58:16Speaker 1: kind of do what, like, the Rockets did when Daryl
- 58:18Speaker 1: Morey took the swing. Like, we just need to shoot
- 58:21Speaker 1: a ton of threes and be different than them. It's like, okay.
- 58:25Speaker 1: LaMelo Ball makes you fast. He makes you different. He
- 58:28Speaker 1: gives you variance. He gives you upside. So I don't
- 58:32Speaker 1: hate it as much as apparently literally every other person
- 58:35Speaker 1: in the NBA.
- 58:35Speaker 3: All right.
- 58:37Speaker 2: Before we go, we have slipped on this with Danny
- 58:40Speaker 2: Parkins the last couple of times he has come on.
- 58:42Speaker 2: He is one of the people that we don't mind
- 58:44Speaker 2: when he likes to produce the show. And he came
- 58:46Speaker 2: on earlier and he shared with us before some dispatches
- 58:50Speaker 2: from the local newspaper of.
- 58:52Speaker 3: His Westchester County burg.
- 58:55Speaker 2: Oh that he lives in and he has updates on
- 58:59Speaker 2: what's going on in the police blotter of his town it's.
- 59:03Speaker 1: The highlight of my month when this comes out nothing
- 59:06Speaker 1: happens here and it's not because i forgot Beau. I
- 59:08Speaker 1: read it every month. The last couple of months were
- 59:11Speaker 1: not up to the right time for Monty Jones standards.
- 59:15Speaker 1: But this month is an absolute banger. I have pulled five. Okay,
- 59:20Speaker 1: here we go. A Ramsey Road homeowner reported that 11
- 59:25Speaker 1: tomatoes were stolen from her garden. And similar thefts happened
- 59:29Speaker 1: in the past. Police advised her to install video surveillance equipment.
- 59:34Speaker 1: My question for you. Did this person call the police
- 59:39Speaker 1: on a squirrel?
- 59:40Speaker 3: That was the exact thought that I was having. Should
- 59:44Speaker 3: you be.
- 59:44Speaker 2: Calling animal control, ma'am? Should you be calling the squirrel catcher?
- 59:49Speaker 1: Similar thefts have happened in the past. It's just an
- 59:53Speaker 1: all timeline. I believe... I believe this woman called the
- 59:57Speaker 1: cops on a squirrel. Hold on.
- 59:58Speaker 2: I would love if it's a person because if it's
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: a person, it's beef, right? In fact, if it was
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: a person, she would know who the person was.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Oh, absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Melissa is the subject. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: I don't know if a detective was assigned to the
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: 11 tomatoes.
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: Yo, that's the thing.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: The detective at the D detective singular at that department.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Listen, everything about this to me, I recognize the privilege.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: I recognize the wealth. I recognize the absurdity. And I
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: genuinely feel bad for the law enforcement officials who get
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: their time wasted. And it frightens me that I walk
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: among these people that are like, this mild inconvenience happened
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: in my life. I'm dialing 911.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: Also, keep in mind, you're still one of us now.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: It's only a matter of time before you become one
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: of them.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Dude. I hope not.
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: I'm here to keep you in line.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: I appreciate it. If you ever catch me being like,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: you know, I want to report this incident, just let
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: me know.
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: Okay, here we go.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: A Maranek Avenue woman reported receiving an alarming text message
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: from a neighbor after she refused to give her six chickens.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: The neighbor texted she should watch out because actions have consequences.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: When contacted by police... The neighbor said she was frustrated
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: about the, quote, chicken situation, end quote, but would never
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: hurt her neighbor.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: I'm just curious what actions and consequences she's referring to.
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: Like, I really want to get to the bottom of that.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Threats. We're making threats.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: We're making threats over chickens.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: It's incredible. Okay, here we go. Next one. Ooh, this
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: is good. This is what you got to call the
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: cops on. Very simple. One sentence. A Montrose Road homeowner
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: told police that a group of kids run through his
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: backyard to get to a nearby park, and he wants
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: them to stop. What has happened to society?
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: Hey, man, let me tell you something about growing up
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: in suburbia.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: Please.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: As a youngster, particularly as an Afro-American youngster in suburbia,
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: The threat of somebody coming to knock, the cops coming
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: to knock on your door over triviality is always sky high.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: Your brother, it's terrifying. Like that cut, let me tell you,
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: the police go knock on the door about that cutting
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: across the yard.
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: The yard cutting will in fact stop.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: I know, but have we reached a point in society
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: where the neighbor can't just say to the kids, excuse me,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: don't run into my yard? Yeah, right, right, right.
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: When did grownups stop being terrifying, right?
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: Like you should be able to- Pull up sternly. When
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: we had the cops called on us for that, it
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: was actually a young, well, he didn't say he was African-American.
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: He said he was Jamaican, but he was our age.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Basically, we wanted him to come outside so we could
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: beat him up and he wouldn't come outside. So instead,
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: we played basketball on his not very high goal and
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: dunked on it until it broke. And then we ran
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: away and then he called the cops. And you know
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: what I thought about it? I never saw that young
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: man after that. And I wish I had. Because he
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: called the fucking cops on us. It's been 30 years.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: I beat his ass right now over that.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: And you'd be totally justified. There would be a jury
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: in the world that would convict you. Thank you. Two more.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: Police responding to a report of a verbal dispute on
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: Post Road found a woman shouting while talking on her phone.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: She told police she was frustrated over the high price
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: of gas. Don't tell me that suburbia can't be relatable, Beau.
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: I see where she's coming from.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: Although, I will tell you this, if you complain about
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: the high price of gas here, brother, I.
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: Rented a car in Europe.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: How'd that go?
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: That's high price of gas. Though I see why they
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: be driving go-karts.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: Or Vespas.
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: Oh my god, I was like, I wish I hadn't
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: gotten the upgrade.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: Nice flex, nice flex. I just love the idea that
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: this woman's talking loudly on her phone. I'm going to
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: get the police involved. And it's like, oh, that's the
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: most relatable thing I've ever heard.
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: All right. Last one. You remember earlier when we called
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: police on a squirrel. I have got a name for
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: this one as well. A caller told police a suspicious
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: potato chip bag dropped at the corner of Chase Road.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: It could contain harmful substances. Police examined the bag and
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: found it contained trash and threw it away. I believe this, Bo,
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: is an incident of calling the police on track.
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: They have to be so mad.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: 911, what's your emergency? There's a Lay's potato chip bag
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: at the corner of Chase Road.
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: Somebody do something!
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: We'll get our best people on it, Johnson. On it.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: On it.
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: On it. It's just gotta be.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Squad car pulls up.
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: And what is the best and worst police job that
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: there is?
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Correct. Correct. You're in no danger, probably pretty highly paid,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: fairly relaxing, but you did still have to go through
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: the academy and get trained.
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: You did.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: And you never use any of it.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: Wow, does that place have an academy? Or do they
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: just have an orientation?
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: I said this in my group chat, and my boys
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: were like, you need to contact the person at the
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: newspaper and see if they're in on the bit. Do
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: they just publish 100% of the calls that the cops
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: get in a month? Or is this some sort of
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: comedy bit and they're aware of it? Because the fact
