SPEAKER_01: Like nobody just goes, wait a sec, before I fire off and call him a bunch of names and accuse him of being five things that he isn't, maybe I'd just go check.
0:07
SPEAKER_01: No one checked.
0:09
SPEAKER_01: No one went to go find out of the history of renting equipment at the Moda Center.
0:13
SPEAKER_01: They just went to call me wrong or that I made it up or that Tom lined my pockets.
0:18
SPEAKER_01: Tom wasn't gonna pay me.
0:19
SPEAKER_01: I'm old money.
0:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is a Nepo baby.
0:21
SPEAKER_01: You don't need Tom's money.
0:23
SPEAKER_01: Are you kidding me?
0:24
SPEAKER_01: I slept in milk till I was nine.
0:26
SPEAKER_01: I once almost got choked to death by my own sweater tied around my neck when the wind picked up.
0:32
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Drew got a sunburn on a camp trip one time and they actually turned down the sun.
0:37
SPEAKER_02: That's how old money he is.
0:39
SPEAKER_02: So just look out.
0:40
SPEAKER_01: Have you ever nearly choked to death on caviar?
0:45
SPEAKER_01: I don't think you have.
0:46
SPEAKER_01: Do you know what that amount of salt does to a man's cholesterol?
0:49
SPEAKER_02: Drew's so old money his parents didn't hold him after he was two.
0:53
SPEAKER_02: They had a nanny for that.
0:55
SPEAKER_02: So do I, yeah, do I wish I was old money?
0:57
SPEAKER_01: Kind of.
0:58
SPEAKER_01: We all do.
0:58
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we all do.
0:59
SPEAKER_01: But I'm not welcome into the PW podcast.
1:16
SPEAKER_01: We are here at the Stafford Hills Club where we always are, uh, which is the spot, the premium place to work out and to chill with your friends.
1:25
SPEAKER_01: Saltwater pool, great classes, amazing workout facilities, and just today, uh getting the whole gang back in order.
1:32
SPEAKER_01: You know, you got this end of the summer stuff going on, so use the kids club today.
1:36
SPEAKER_01: Uh, my kids were hanging out by the pool, relaxing all while I was uh here, doing some work.
1:42
SPEAKER_01: So it's nice to have peace of mind that you're with good people.
1:45
SPEAKER_01: Also, that kids club is next level and trusted individuals, and just a great place to be.
1:50
SPEAKER_01: Check them out, Staffordhills.com.
1:53
SPEAKER_01: Marcus joins me per usual.
1:55
SPEAKER_01: Good to see you, brother.
1:57
SPEAKER_01: Um, we have a lot to talk about as you and I have been called a lot of names in the last 24 hours.
2:03
SPEAKER_01: Um, a lot of names I don't think I've ever been called before, which are kind of flattering but also ridiculous.
2:09
SPEAKER_01: We'll get into it.
2:10
SPEAKER_01: Now, um, first of all, how are you doing, buddy?
2:13
SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, I was good until I opened the comments section, but I try not to let that stuff uh bleed me dry anymore, Drew.
2:18
SPEAKER_02: You're right.
2:19
SPEAKER_02: Uh people are creative and they are uh quick to rush to judgment.
2:23
SPEAKER_02: I really do just want to say that uh what Drew's putting up on Facebook are what we in the industry like to call clips.
2:30
SPEAKER_02: And you can listen to the whole show if you'd like to and get a little bit more context on the clips.
2:36
SPEAKER_02: But if you'd rather just run into the comment section and uh and and and start running your mouth, I totally get it.
2:43
SPEAKER_02: I run my mouth a lot.
2:44
SPEAKER_02: So who am I to judge, Drew?
2:45
SPEAKER_01: I think that's a good point.
2:46
SPEAKER_01: On this show, a clip on social media, whether it's on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, whatever it is, which you should follow us on all those because stop being a schlub and start helping a brother out.
2:58
SPEAKER_01: You get one minute of the show there.
3:00
SPEAKER_01: It's a tease of the actual conversation.
3:03
SPEAKER_01: The problem with the internet is they use that as their news vehicle.
3:06
SPEAKER_01: So they hear a sound clip, they blow their absolute mind, and then they go to the comments.
3:12
SPEAKER_01: Now, I do like that people go to the comments, a place where we're going to be showcasing some of that here.
3:20
SPEAKER_01: Um, but what has really blown up people this time, Marcus, is a clip we put up from Monday's show where we were talking about the Moda Center and the future of concerts in, you know, basically and how that equates to like if the Blazers leave, what happens to concerts?
3:39
SPEAKER_01: Well, what I said during that time is I talked to some people who have worked with the Modus Center, both with and outside entities that work with them, about the fact that sometimes equipment has to be rented in order to fulfill the promise to an artist in order to make it happen.
3:58
SPEAKER_01: That also cuts into the bottom line.
4:00
SPEAKER_01: What that sparked was just an absolute backlash of I I love when people scream the word wrong in their first, they say wrong, and then they just like go ham on you.
4:12
SPEAKER_01: First of all, that's a great form of communication.
4:14
SPEAKER_01: You're doing well.
4:15
SPEAKER_01: That is not how you talk to people.
4:17
SPEAKER_01: It makes them fire back at you.
4:19
SPEAKER_01: Um, but that's fine.
4:20
SPEAKER_01: Not everyone has manners.
4:22
SPEAKER_01: People just believe that I'm automatically wrong, or that I made that up, or that this, in fact, if you look around, Marcus, look right under your chair, is the propaganda machine.
4:34
SPEAKER_01: Yep.
4:34
SPEAKER_01: They they they accuse you and I of being propaganda.
4:38
SPEAKER_01: Um, I was accused of that Tom Dundan has paid you and I to make these comments.
4:47
SPEAKER_01: Can you believe that?
4:49
SPEAKER_01: We were paid by the man who's been told, said that he won't pay for anything.
4:53
SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
4:53
SPEAKER_01: But he'll pay for you and me to sit and run our mouths about a bunch of lies.
4:59
SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
5:00
SPEAKER_02: I uh Can you believe that?
5:01
SPEAKER_01: I feel for you.
5:02
SPEAKER_02: If yeah, uh you should have seen me at the gas pump filling up my my Chevy Silverado because I wouldn't have been squirming like I was this weekend if I had Tom Dundan's money in my pocket.
5:12
SPEAKER_02: Um look, man, these are our thoughts.
5:15
SPEAKER_02: I've uh this is just how we feel as Oregonians born and bred, as uh lifelong Blazer fans, and as people that weren't really discussing the political side of this whole thing.
5:26
SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, it comes up, but that's what has always just confounded me about Facebook, Drew, is if it's not a political discussion, it will become a political discussion in somebody's eyes.
5:38
SPEAKER_02: And then they hit the comments and then it's a rock fight.
5:42
SPEAKER_02: And um it's hard not to get into those rock fights, man.
5:46
SPEAKER_02: Uh uh 25-year-old Marcus would be throwing rocks right now, but uh, I think in my older age, I've just kind of settled down a little bit because I'm glad people are discussing it.
5:56
SPEAKER_02: This is what we want out of this whole thing, right?
5:58
SPEAKER_02: We wanted to start the conversation and get people talking about it so that if there's action to be taken, then we can take action.
6:05
SPEAKER_02: But uh nobody's paying us to take action.
6:08
SPEAKER_02: At least I haven't seen any paychecks come through yet.
6:11
SPEAKER_01: No, and and that's why it's so ridiculous.
6:14
SPEAKER_01: This is a a show about the Pacific Northwest for the people of the Pacific Northwest.
6:21
SPEAKER_01: And I hate to be the one to bring it down from the beginning.
6:25
SPEAKER_01: My party affiliation aside, which you'd probably be surprised on what it even is, is n has nothing to do with this.
6:33
SPEAKER_01: But you I will also be the first to tell you that I am not a serious right winger, I am not a liberal, I'm a dude in the middle of a boat talking about a situation, and how I decide to vote is the same as for you.
6:48
SPEAKER_01: It's totally up to you.
6:49
SPEAKER_01: And I actually don't judge you based on how you vote.
6:53
SPEAKER_01: And so the fact that this has become political in any way, shape, or form, I'll throw one of the political lines at you straight away that just to give you an idea of how polarizing a conversation about um stereo speakers and light gels can become about something so much more.
7:14
SPEAKER_01: The the it starts with my favorite line.
7:17
SPEAKER_01: Wrong! Portland has a hard time getting big concerts to come because of its reputation.
7:25
SPEAKER_01: Portland as a city and its leaders, they have this reputation, and people see through the BS lies and see Portland for exactly what it's become.
7:34
SPEAKER_01: I was talking about the fact that you can't get Bruno Mars or Taylor Swift or Morgan Wallen or any of those big dogs to come because, you know, and some of those have outgrown the seats.
7:48
SPEAKER_01: But when it comes back to where that's the number of seats that they can fill, they can't come without there being an added price to make it sound and look the way that they would like.
8:00
SPEAKER_01: For you to sit for one second and think that Bruno Mars and his management team are gonna say, you know what, I'm not feeling the mayor over there.
8:11
SPEAKER_01: So I'm not gonna come play to 20,000 people or 18,000 people at the MOTA center is laughable.
8:19
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
8:19
SPEAKER_01: And what it is, is it really is it's showing that you as an individual are so jaded by politics that all conversations lead back to the same place.
8:30
SPEAKER_01: It's like being in, and I feel for you because it I've it's just sad that at all points you turn right, left, or center, you find yourself at the same spot, angry and blaming the man.
8:42
SPEAKER_02: And it's not healthy.
8:43
SPEAKER_02: I mean, the stress hormones that you're pumping into your system uh by gritting your teeth down to nubs, reading the comments on Facebook, and not and not you, obviously.
8:52
SPEAKER_02: I'm talking to uh the general public here, but like that's look, that's how the system's designed.
8:58
SPEAKER_02: That's what Facebook wants you to do.
9:00
SPEAKER_02: More time on the pro uh on the platform, more engagement, and the things that make you engage are things that make you upset.
9:07
SPEAKER_02: And so they keep showing you the things that make you upset so that you keep throwing rocks in the comments, and before you know it, you're in the hospital at the age of 45 because you're too stressed out.
9:18
SPEAKER_02: Now, again, Drew, not using you as an example here, but if for anything other than the fact that stress can put you there is what I'm trying to say.
9:27
SPEAKER_02: And you gotta do something else with your time.
9:30
SPEAKER_02: I I don't spend nearly as much time in the comments as I used to because I saw that happening and it started to affect my daily life.
9:38
SPEAKER_02: Like I was short with my wife because I got in a fight on Facebook earlier in the day.
9:42
SPEAKER_02: What on earth does that say about me as a husband?
9:45
SPEAKER_02: That's not a good dude.
9:47
SPEAKER_02: And and listen, I'm all about the discourse.
9:50
SPEAKER_02: I think it's really important.
9:51
SPEAKER_02: In fact, I think the worst thing that can happen for our political environment in this state and this country is to have people silenced because people don't agree with them.
9:59
SPEAKER_02: I think that's that's uh a one-way ticket to where we don't want to be.
10:04
SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I will say that just getting in here and screaming at people and and trying to politicize everything is I'm I'm bored with it, Drew.
10:13
SPEAKER_02: I'll be honest with you.
10:14
SPEAKER_02: If I can say that, since 2020, this has been the environment we've lived in, and I'm frankly I'm kind of sick of it.
10:20
SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, I'm over it, and that's why I don't spend a lot of time reading comments anymore.
10:24
SPEAKER_01: And it's funny when you go to comments because the way that people talk to you is like they really think that they are super smart and you're a moron.
10:33
SPEAKER_01: And they they completely forget of maybe where uh where you're coming from and that you might have a little knowledge on it yourself.
10:40
SPEAKER_01: Like perfect example is this guy who's going ham on me, how he's like, Taylor Swift is played there, Morgan Wallins played there, uh Metallica played there.
10:50
SPEAKER_01: Okay, let me reel that back for a sec.
10:52
SPEAKER_01: Taylor Swift playing there is not in the current form of Taylor Swift.
10:56
SPEAKER_01: We're talking about if you're talking Taylor Swift's been famous a long time.
10:59
SPEAKER_01: If you're talking about when she was still a country star and all that jazz, then that's fine.
11:03
SPEAKER_01: That's a completely different situation, and it's so long ago that the equipment isn't dated.
11:10
SPEAKER_01: Let's go one step farther.
11:11
SPEAKER_01: Morgan Wallen has only played there when he opened for Luke Combs.
11:16
SPEAKER_01: I know because I was there.
11:19
SPEAKER_01: Then let's go to your final example as you're calling me a moron.
11:22
SPEAKER_01: How about Metallica?
11:24
SPEAKER_01: Metallica played a dumbed-down version of what they normally do in the round, which is much more accessible at the Moda Center.
11:32
SPEAKER_01: And I know because I wasn't just there, I introduced them on stage.
11:38
SPEAKER_01: I was there with their equipment.
11:40
SPEAKER_01: I know what was there.
11:41
SPEAKER_01: So next time you call someone a dum-dum, do a little bit of research.
11:46
SPEAKER_01: And I'm not trying to be negative, I'm just trying to say that internet warriors unite.
11:52
SPEAKER_01: Those of you who say, okay, here's two more comments that'll make you laugh, Marcus.
11:57
SPEAKER_01: The Bruno Mars things come up, and I'm only talking about big artists, I don't care which one is which, but somebody goes, This is total bullshit.
12:06
SPEAKER_01: Because Bruno Mars played in Eugene at Matthew Knight Arena.
12:11
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
12:12
SPEAKER_01: Do you know that Matthew Knight Arena was built, I think, 18 years old, or it might even be more after the Moda Center?
12:21
SPEAKER_01: So it's not dated.
12:22
SPEAKER_01: That's the problem.
12:23
SPEAKER_01: It's not size of venue, not size of city, it's age of venue.
12:28
SPEAKER_01: And the final thing I will tell you is the people who are saying, well, they have medium to large acts that go to the memorial coliseum, and that's super old.
12:38
SPEAKER_01: Those are medium acts, medium to schmedium acts that aren't bringing the full bell and whistle, and it's a piggyback venue.
12:48
SPEAKER_01: You want to bring up the Veterans Memorial Coliseum?
12:51
SPEAKER_01: You might say Sayanara to that too, if you lose big brother who keeps the lights on over there.
12:58
SPEAKER_01: So do you think that in that little area there that just Memorial Coliseum is gonna haul the mail?
13:05
SPEAKER_01: Not a chance.
13:06
SPEAKER_02: Well, there's no way.
13:07
SPEAKER_02: Otherwise, they wouldn't have built the Moda Center to begin with because it was basically a replacement, right?
13:12
SPEAKER_02: Like that's that's where I saw my first Blazer games, and then all of a sudden they didn't play there anymore.
13:17
SPEAKER_02: They played next door in the big house.
13:19
SPEAKER_02: Uh I could see that one getting the same treatment as an old casino on the Las Vegas strip, Drew, where all of a sudden you walk by one day, you hear five loud cracks and the entire thing turns into a pile of rubble.
13:30
SPEAKER_02: That might be where we're going if the Blazers leave and this whole thing goes the way we don't want it to go.
13:36
SPEAKER_02: Um, and and I will tell you this there's a lot of people that are probably listening to this, Drew, that have no idea about who you and I are, what we've done in the past, but uh without getting too far into it, uh just to kind of give you a zoomed-out view, Drew and I spend, you know, 15 to 20 minutes, maybe a half an hour before we ever go on just talking about what we're going to talk about.
13:56
SPEAKER_02: We also have multiple phone calls and text messages a week.
13:59
SPEAKER_02: Uh, we're veteran broadcasters, whether you like it or not, we've done this for a long time.
14:04
SPEAKER_02: Drew, twice as long as I have, but one thing we know is that to come on here without doing a little bit of investigating, doing some research and knowing some facts, you get your tit in a ringer real fast.
14:17
SPEAKER_02: So I uh before you run into the comments and scream, wrong, you might think for a second about just checking up on a few things and uh understand that we're not gonna come on here with poorly thought out opinions, especially not on this.
14:31
SPEAKER_02: This is all we've been talking about lately.
14:33
SPEAKER_02: We're pretty well researched on it.
14:35
SPEAKER_02: So um uh again, glad that people are talking in the comments, maybe be a little bit more friendly.
14:41
SPEAKER_02: You know, a lot of people have told me when they come to the Pacific Northwest, they say, when people finally did open up to me, they were really nice, but nobody really was outgoing.
14:50
SPEAKER_02: And if I go to say the deep south, people will hit me with a hi friend, how you doing, before I'm I'm ever expecting it.
14:58
SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of good people in the Pacific Northwest, a lot of nice people.
15:01
SPEAKER_02: We get marred with this type of comment discourse all the time because everybody's so in their feelings about their opinions.
15:08
SPEAKER_02: Let's take a breath, let's understand we're all people, we're all fighting a battle that nobody knows anything about, and have a little bit of common courtesy and respect for your fellow human uh before you start calling them all sorts of colorful names, Drew.
15:23
SPEAKER_02: Very colorful.
15:24
SPEAKER_02: They are creative in the comments.
15:26
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and what's funny is, you know, we talked on this show, and and what's what's ironic about the whole situation is most people who yell in the comments did not take the time to go check on like what we're dealing with in our own lives.
15:40
SPEAKER_01: Because in the same episode or the episode before, I'm talking about having a heart attack and how like I'm like holding on the edge of stress, but you got people just screaming at me, calling me a moron, without any evidence to the contrary of what I'm saying.
15:55
SPEAKER_01: And what I absolutely love is because you know, people are going crazy.
16:00
SPEAKER_01: Yesterday, I'm over at my parents' house, and like I'm there with my kids and my parents and my wife, and they're like, What are you doing on your phone over there?
16:08
SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, I said, I'm gonna just respond to a couple of these comments just to just to fire back a little bit.
16:14
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I went so far as I was at Fred Meyer picking up some some meat, and I'm standing there next to like the the open meat section, and I read one of these comments, I'm like, nah.
16:26
SPEAKER_01: And so I started to write back, and I'm not like firing back calling anybody names or anything, but it's like if you truly believe that Marcus and I are being paid to stir the propaganda machine or whatever, or to be a part of some big conspiracy, you're wearing a tinfoil hat.
16:46
SPEAKER_01: I mean, you honestly are, and I want to like give you the relief to chill because what I'm going to tell you, Marcus, when we uh after we take a break is I'm not gonna tell you my opinion or some anonymous source.
17:00
SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna read you the assessment from the city of Portland themselves and what they said about this the condition of the equipment used for concerts inside the venue, and you can send any and all apologies right here to this podcast.
17:15
SPEAKER_01: The PNW podcast is brought to you by a series of people who have done nothing but support me through the trying week that I've had.
17:25
SPEAKER_01: It just shows how incredible the people who support this show are.
17:29
SPEAKER_01: I'll start with Stafford Hills Club.
17:31
SPEAKER_01: Uh, when the general manager PNW podcast is brought to you by a group of amazing people and companies.
17:41
SPEAKER_01: I am so prideful of the people I get to work with on this program and this weekend with my health concerns.
17:48
SPEAKER_01: That was no exception.
17:50
SPEAKER_01: Personal messages from the man who runs Stafford Hills Club, just an incredible human, Evan, checking on me.
17:59
SPEAKER_01: And it's part of the reason why this place is rated the best health and wellness facility in the Portland area.
18:05
SPEAKER_01: I was laid up at a hospital less than a mile from here, and they were doing nothing but caring about me.
18:12
SPEAKER_01: It's a sense of community down here.
18:14
SPEAKER_01: You gotta check it out.
18:15
SPEAKER_01: You've got to see them when you get a chance.
18:17
SPEAKER_01: Staffordhills.com.
18:19
SPEAKER_01: Tell them Drew sent you for half off your initiation.
18:22
SPEAKER_01: It's so much more than a health and wellness facility.
18:25
SPEAKER_01: It's a family down here at Stafford Hills.
18:28
SPEAKER_01: Same goes for my people over at Motorsport Hillsboro, where I'm always talking about how they can get you the easiest and best financing and how they work hard to get the job done.
18:39
SPEAKER_01: But also compassionate people as well.
18:41
SPEAKER_01: The owner Scott messaging me, telling me to get well soon, worrying not about business, but about his relationships with a human being.
18:50
SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm talking about with these sponsorships.
18:53
SPEAKER_01: And right now, you can get the ultimate deal down there.
18:56
SPEAKER_01: The gas gas eAssist mountain bike, the G Light Trail 2.0 e-bike is now just$21.99 at Motosport Hillsboro.
19:08
SPEAKER_01: That's up to$3,000 off MSRP, where they're always taking care of you.
19:14
SPEAKER_01: Check them out today at Motosporthillsboro.com.
19:18
SPEAKER_01: And finally, my people, Bruce is the leader over there, but his whole staff's so incredible at Axiom Plumbing, Sewer, and Septic, where they take care of business, and they will make sure they take care of you.
19:32
SPEAKER_01: 10% off if you say that I sent you.
19:35
SPEAKER_01: And you could also get$500 off a water heater where they take care of their people.
19:41
SPEAKER_01: And this is why I work with the people that I do.
19:44
SPEAKER_01: Anything to do with water and waste, they got you at Axiom.
19:48
SPEAKER_01: And remember, it's not private equity.
19:49
SPEAKER_01: This is a homegrown boy.
19:51
SPEAKER_01: Bruce is my favorite in the business, so check him out today, axiompdx.com.
19:58
SPEAKER_01: All right, we're gonna get into exactly what I was talking about when I said that sometimes a big act comes through to the Moda Center and they have to actually rent the equipment needed to fulfill the show, which cuts into the bottom line.
20:14
SPEAKER_01: Um, that went into a whole thing about how Marcus and I here are part of the the Blazers propaganda machine designed to get the deal done with the city of Portland, and that um we're basically being paid by Tom Dundan himself, who's been considered rather tight with the wallet, but not when he comes to paying Marcus and I.
20:36
SPEAKER_01: That's when he really delivers the big cheese.
20:39
SPEAKER_01: I'll be honest, I'm kind of flattered.
20:40
SPEAKER_02: Like we see we stirred it up this much that people think we're being paid by the guy that won't give won't shell out a dollar to save our team.
20:48
SPEAKER_02: I I look, I we should have just fed into the rumor.
20:52
SPEAKER_02: I you know, now I'm having second thoughts.
20:54
SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, gosh, it doesn't it feel true?
20:56
SPEAKER_01: And I love that so somebody writes that in the comments of of our video, and all now I gotta say, over 16,000 people had seen that that video on Instagram alone, and let alone be another 11,000 on Facebook and and another 10 grand on TikTok.
21:17
SPEAKER_01: But of those people, so few actually went to go check out the episode to get some sort of context.
21:23
SPEAKER_01: They just wanted to try and come at us.
21:26
SPEAKER_01: Somebody responded, and I'm just going to address the elephant in the room.
21:30
SPEAKER_01: Somebody responded to the fact that we're being paid by Tom Dundan, and I thought the person would be coming to my defense, but instead they said, No, no, no.
21:40
SPEAKER_01: Drew is from Lake Oswego, and he comes from quote unquote old money.
21:48
SPEAKER_01: This is somebody, this is somebody who has did not listen to the last couple of episodes because let's remind everyone in the chat that I had a Heart attack.
22:01
SPEAKER_01: And it was partially to do with how you find a way to finance a family of five while launching podcasts when you had a very well-paying job for over 20 years.
22:14
SPEAKER_01: Old money doesn't have heart attacks over money.
22:17
SPEAKER_02: No, old money uses the word summer as a verb.
22:20
SPEAKER_02: This is not, I mean, it's just, I'm sorry, but it's so far out.
22:25
SPEAKER_02: And maybe it's because I've known you for so long that I find this so laughable.
22:29
SPEAKER_02: But old money, old money is like uh a house in the Hamptons.
22:35
SPEAKER_02: Old money is having a place to go in the summer that you uh don't live at, but also nobody else lives at because it's your summer home.
22:42
SPEAKER_02: Like old money is Bentley's.
22:44
SPEAKER_02: Old money is not used vehicles.
22:46
SPEAKER_02: I don't know, man.
22:47
SPEAKER_02: If you do come from old money and you've been holding out on me, you better kick a homie down a couple of shekels because, you know, I think we all need them.
22:55
SPEAKER_01: And, you know, and I don't care what people say about me, but it just makes me laugh when you just had a financially driven heart attack.
23:04
SPEAKER_01: Like that's exactly what it is.
23:06
SPEAKER_01: It's not just, oh man, I just get so mad at the neighbor kids.
23:10
SPEAKER_01: No, I had a heart attack from stress related to finances.
23:15
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
23:16
SPEAKER_01: So I'm not pretending to be richer than anyone or more successful than anyone.
23:20
SPEAKER_01: I have the same struggles that everyone else has.
23:23
SPEAKER_01: And anyone in my family who has money did it through education and hard work individually.
23:29
SPEAKER_01: And I'm not going to sit here and name them because that's their own thing.
23:34
SPEAKER_01: And, you know, really it comes down to a shame on you for thinking that somebody had it so easy because that's your own personal excuse for why it's not working out for you.
23:43
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
23:43
SPEAKER_01: So, you know, it's all about a little bit of elbow grease and grind.
23:48
SPEAKER_01: My first radio contract,$17,000.
23:52
SPEAKER_01: You know what you do with that?
23:53
SPEAKER_01: You have four roommates.
23:55
SPEAKER_01: So just quit it with all that jazz.
23:57
SPEAKER_01: You know what old money does?
23:58
SPEAKER_01: Zero roommates.
24:00
SPEAKER_01: Zero$17,000.
24:02
SPEAKER_01: You know what you do with$17,000 when you're old money?
24:06
SPEAKER_01: That's one of those vacations.
24:08
SPEAKER_01: That's that verb, that summer verb.
24:10
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, dude.
24:11
SPEAKER_02: And unlike Drew, I'll just let you guys know.
24:13
SPEAKER_02: I come from new money, uh, which is barely any of it.
24:17
SPEAKER_02: Um, just looking for it in the couch cushions, saving my change.
24:21
SPEAKER_02: Um, so you know, we're uh we're we're getting it done here, though.
24:25
SPEAKER_02: Uh interesting.
24:26
SPEAKER_02: Again, I'm flattered to think that they think that we come from where we do, Drew, but uh I I would say once again, I hate this, but do your research.
24:35
SPEAKER_02: That ain't us.
24:37
SPEAKER_01: So what I would say, if you're calling Marcus and I blazer propaganda, I would say don't take my word for it.
24:46
SPEAKER_01: Don't take Marcus's word for it.
24:48
SPEAKER_01: I would say take the city's word for it, because the city did an assessment of the Motor Center and said that the speaker system needs replacement, the lighting and lighting control needs upgraded as high priority capital items.
25:05
SPEAKER_01: They also said that there is an example of outside production equipment that is being used and deployed at the Motor Center in order to fulfill these contracts.
25:16
SPEAKER_01: Who do you think is paying for that?
25:19
SPEAKER_01: So the next time you say, Oh, that's that's BS, do a little research.
25:24
SPEAKER_01: There are countless shows and festivals that have used outside groups to come in and to fulfill the requirements necessary to have that show.
25:35
SPEAKER_01: I think we're all a little annoyed by the speaker systems in there, and there's been plenty of stuff about, oh, I don't love the sound, it's this and that.
25:43
SPEAKER_01: It's because it's outdated.
25:45
SPEAKER_01: Right.
25:45
SPEAKER_01: And certain artists refuse to come to a place that's gonna make them sound like crap.
25:52
SPEAKER_01: And so we pay in order to cover that.
25:56
SPEAKER_02: Right.
25:56
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there was one guy in the comment comments there that he was talking about how he had done some concert work and and hey, I think there might be a few things that you said that he didn't think were right.
26:06
SPEAKER_02: And what I think is important to that guy and to everybody here is there's no one size fits all for these.
26:12
SPEAKER_02: The same uh trucks that are pulling up for Taylor Swift and Beyonce aren't the same trucks that are pulling up for Lamb of God and and uh Metallica.
26:20
SPEAKER_02: It's different stage shows.
26:22
SPEAKER_02: It's different.
26:22
SPEAKER_02: There's no one size fits all for this, but you can outfit the Motus Center to be more of a one size fits all.
26:30
SPEAKER_02: And you're right, man.
26:32
SPEAKER_02: I mean, look, it's I like the concert experience in there because it's intimate.
26:36
SPEAKER_02: I think the sound is actually better in the theater of the clouds than it is when you're in the entire Motus Center.
26:41
SPEAKER_02: I definitely agree with that sentiment.
26:43
SPEAKER_02: Um, but the fact of the matter is there's not one of these stadiums like this across the United States that doesn't become outdated and doesn't need renovations and doesn't need new tech as time goes on.
26:56
SPEAKER_02: You already said it.
26:56
SPEAKER_02: The the uh Mat Knight Arena was built 18 years or something in that area after the Motor Center.
27:03
SPEAKER_02: So the Motor Center could legally vote by the time the shiny new Mat Knight Arena was built.
27:08
SPEAKER_02: It's no surprise that a couple of big acts decided to come to Eugene.
27:12
SPEAKER_02: But as a Eugene resident, I can tell you few and far between.
27:17
SPEAKER_02: We got Elton John like that first year.
27:19
SPEAKER_02: We got a couple of big hitters, they bring the pre-RCA rodeo in there and monster trucks, but it's still a far shot from getting all of these big tours that come through.
27:30
SPEAKER_02: I know my wife and I go to a lot of concerts every year, and every time one of our favorite bands puts out a West Coast tour and goes from Northern California up to either Ridgefield or further up into Seattle, we have a little bit of a talk about it and how pissed off we are because they just continue to skip many times the entire state.
27:51
SPEAKER_02: And that's because they're not finding the venue that satisfies what they need, Drew.
27:55
SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
27:56
SPEAKER_01: And look at use your own home as an example.
27:59
SPEAKER_01: The Moda Center is just an oversized house, right?
28:02
SPEAKER_01: And everything has wear and tear, and over time it's going to decline and need repairs and remodel.
28:09
SPEAKER_01: I mean, even when you have a renter in a place, when you hit the 10-year threshold, you know that you will repaint.
28:15
SPEAKER_01: You know that you will need new carpets.
28:17
SPEAKER_01: It's just part of the turnover.
28:19
SPEAKER_01: Why wouldn't it be the same for a major venue?
28:22
SPEAKER_01: And for people who are like, well, I've been there, it sounds fine.
28:25
SPEAKER_01: That's fine to you because you're allowing, you're allowing what you think is good enough to be where you want it to be.
28:32
SPEAKER_01: And that's fine.
28:34
SPEAKER_01: But for somebody who says, say Marcus has gone to Seattle and he's seen it at the pinnacle, or you go to like Allegiant Stadium where it's just been built and they have all these bells and whistles inside, and then all of a sudden you go back to an older venue and you can see the shortcomings.
28:51
SPEAKER_01: And it's it's just the same with anything that over time you have to keep something up or it becomes dated and washed up.
28:59
SPEAKER_01: I mean, come into my house, my come to my old money kitchen, which also looks like Stranger Things.
29:07
SPEAKER_01: Now, great, I will say they are some beautiful old oak doors on those things, and they're strong, but it's dated.
29:15
SPEAKER_01: You walk in there, and aside from a kid in a vintage shirt who's trying to be cool, nobody thinks it's up to date because over time you have to upgrade things.
29:25
SPEAKER_01: And of course, Marcus and I both want the Blazers to be in Portland, but to use the fact that we need to upgrade the the equipment required to have a concert as the vehicle for keeping the Blazers, we have a thousand other arguments why they should stay.
29:42
SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I'll be honest with you, Marcus.
29:44
SPEAKER_01: You know how I was whining about the um the city councillors and how they voted eight to four to keep the thing.
29:51
SPEAKER_01: You know, they were they were interviewing some of them who are just crossing their arms and saying, no, and they represent the people who don't understand it.
30:00
SPEAKER_01: And and I just think we need to look at the broader picture.
30:03
SPEAKER_01: Some of the people who went the wildest in the comments, anti-do this deal with the Blazers and fix the motor centers, in the footnote, one of them went as far as to say, I haven't been there in 20 years, and the NBA hasn't been good since Michael Jordan.
30:21
SPEAKER_01: That right there discredits the conversation that you're bringing to the table.
30:26
SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like, I you're like, there's no reason for it.
30:29
SPEAKER_01: You can't say that if you haven't been there in two decades.
30:34
SPEAKER_01: Michael Jordan has not played in the NBA in eons.
30:38
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
30:39
SPEAKER_02: And so what are we doing?
30:41
SPEAKER_02: Uh it's it's argument for the sake of argument, Drew.
30:44
SPEAKER_02: I I really do think a lot of people do that.
30:46
SPEAKER_02: And and again, I'm glad that you have the freedom as a red-blooded American to do that.
30:51
SPEAKER_02: I don't agree with that being the way that you spend all of your time, but that's not how I spend my time.
30:57
SPEAKER_02: So that's all I should be concerned about.
30:59
SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, there are certain conversations you and I are going to have on this podcast, being about the Pacific Northwest, that apply to you as a listener, and some that we have that don't apply to you as a listener.
31:12
SPEAKER_02: Um, I I always like to think about it like this, Drew.
31:15
SPEAKER_02: I will make my opinion known if I have a dog in the fight.
31:18
SPEAKER_02: And to me, the guy who hasn't been there for 20 years and doesn't watch the NBA and doesn't go to any concerts there, you don't really have a dog in the fight anymore.
31:27
SPEAKER_02: Now you still got a vote and you should use it, but you don't really have a dog in the fight.
31:31
SPEAKER_02: Thanks for listening, though.
31:32
SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
31:33
SPEAKER_01: And I will say this.
31:34
SPEAKER_01: Some and I did one of the city counselors said, they said, what's gonna make because it's not a final vote for them yet.
31:41
SPEAKER_01: They do get another vote to kind of finalize the deal.
31:44
SPEAKER_01: And what the lady said was, I want to see in the deal something that kicks back for the city so they can see some of this money return.
31:52
SPEAKER_01: Because she did make a good point.
31:54
SPEAKER_01: A budget is a balloon.
31:56
SPEAKER_01: You push on a balloon on one side, it bulges on the other.
31:59
SPEAKER_01: You bulge it on one side, it indents on the other.
32:03
SPEAKER_01: It's only so much money to go around.
32:05
SPEAKER_01: I I don't want people to think that I'm sitting here thinking that the blazers are more important than education and infrastructure and safety and the following things.
32:15
SPEAKER_01: But like any other major city, and in the comments, they're calling us Detroit.
32:20
SPEAKER_01: We'll save that for another episode.
32:22
unknown: Wow.
32:23
SPEAKER_01: It's not even possible, Marcus.
32:25
SPEAKER_01: I mean, Detroit has entire neighborhoods that just don't exist.
32:29
SPEAKER_01: They're just ghost towns that power and water don't go to.
32:32
SPEAKER_01: We don't have that.
32:33
SPEAKER_02: I will say that when I saw that comment, it put a real indent in my bulge, Drew.
32:37
SPEAKER_02: I was saying.
32:39
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and it tends to indent my bulge too.
32:42
SPEAKER_01: But I don't want it to be twisted that we don't care about those other things because they're super important.
32:48
SPEAKER_01: Yep.
32:48
SPEAKER_01: Education is is paramount to us getting out of the dum-dum machine we're in right now.
32:54
SPEAKER_01: I honestly think that part of the reason we're discussing Hapti's comments is we need to work on education.
33:00
SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
33:01
SPEAKER_02: And we don't want to turn this thing into a city hall meeting, right?
33:04
SPEAKER_02: We were we came on here to talk about something pretty specific in this Motor Center thing, and it's it's kind of snowballed on us a little bit.
33:10
SPEAKER_02: But the last thing we want is to bring all of the different problems that this state and this region are facing in.
33:18
SPEAKER_02: We're talking about a very specific thing here, and uh, it's hard not to get pulled off center every now and then with that indent in my bulge.
33:24
SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you that much.
33:26
SPEAKER_01: And that is something that I kind of want to finish with is that, you know, the whole reason behind this thing is to it's a podcast for the people of the Pacific Northwest.
33:36
SPEAKER_01: And part of that is showcasing the greatness that's here.
33:39
SPEAKER_01: And people get so lost in the negative.
33:41
SPEAKER_01: And we've been talking to a bunch of different business owners and people in the area who do great things.
33:47
SPEAKER_01: You know, like I was just talking to a couple of different restaurant owners that we're going to showcase down the road about how great their business is and how great it is to be an entrepreneur in this city and and just launch a restaurant and have it blow up and have people love it and and to that there is a great sense of community here.
34:06
SPEAKER_01: And so sometimes people are still stuck in so much of the negative that they don't think about the the the idea of this is much beyond just rallying behind the blazers.
34:17
SPEAKER_01: I was just relaying a point that is true.
34:21
SPEAKER_01: And the internet has a major problem, Marcus, and the fact that they rush back to chomp your head off without doing any return uh investigation.
34:31
SPEAKER_01: Like nobody just goes, wait a sec, before I fire off and call him a bunch of names and accuse him of being five things that he isn't, maybe I'd just go check.
34:40
SPEAKER_01: No one checked.
34:41
SPEAKER_01: No one went to go find out of the history of renting equipment at the Motor Center.
34:45
SPEAKER_01: They just went to call me wrong or that I made it up or that Tom lined my pockets.
34:51
SPEAKER_01: Tom wasn't gonna pay me.
34:52
SPEAKER_01: I'm old money.
34:53
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is a Nepo baby.
34:54
SPEAKER_01: He don't need Tom's money.
34:56
SPEAKER_01: Are you kidding me?
34:57
SPEAKER_01: I slept in milk till I was nine.
35:00
SPEAKER_01: I once almost got choked to death by my own sweater tied around my neck when the wind picked up.
35:06
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Drew got a sunburn on a camp trip one time and they actually turned down the sun.
35:11
SPEAKER_02: That's how old money he is.
35:13
SPEAKER_02: So just look at it.
35:14
SPEAKER_01: Have you ever nearly choked to death on caviar?
35:19
SPEAKER_01: I don't think you have.
35:20
SPEAKER_01: Do you know what that amount of salt does to a man's cholesterol?
35:24
SPEAKER_02: Drew's so old money, his parents didn't hold him after he was two.
35:28
SPEAKER_02: They had a nanny for that.
35:32
SPEAKER_01: So do I, yeah, do I wish I was old money?
35:35
SPEAKER_01: Kind of.
35:35
SPEAKER_01: We all do.
35:36
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we all do.
35:36
SPEAKER_01: But I'm not.
35:38
SPEAKER_01: And so if if whatever, write your own narrative, tell your own story.
35:42
SPEAKER_01: But all I ask, take the time to go listen to the podcast, subscribe to it, share it with your friends, maybe your mom.
35:50
SPEAKER_01: She might be more reasonable than you.
35:52
SPEAKER_01: And remember that these come out every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and it's not designed to be an argument.
35:59
SPEAKER_01: And this one is a rebuttal episode.
36:01
SPEAKER_01: And next time we're gonna get back into fun things like where your favorite teams are ranked, or where you should get that empanada, or what's the best golf course to get a quick round to golf in at a cheap rate on a weekday.
36:15
SPEAKER_01: I mean, these are the things that this is all designed for, not for us to argue and point the finger at each other.
36:22
SPEAKER_01: My idea and Marcus's idea is to make it a community.
36:26
SPEAKER_01: It doesn't need to be a mutiny.
36:29
SPEAKER_01: That's all I'm saying.
36:30
SPEAKER_02: And hey, next time we're even going to tell you about where you can come out and watch a show that I'm gonna be part of.
36:36
SPEAKER_02: So uh a little tease for you there.
36:38
SPEAKER_02: There's a bit of the community.
36:39
SPEAKER_02: You can actually come out and see me perform, and we'll tell you all about it on the next one.
36:44
SPEAKER_02: So we're just at our best here, Drew.
36:46
SPEAKER_01: I'm glad you brought that up because beyond even the food and the golf courses, I want to talk about music.
36:51
SPEAKER_01: And I want to talk about, I want to give people an avenue where they can see the performing arts and so much more that makes us special here.
36:58
SPEAKER_01: And yeah, Marcus is a musician and a good one.
37:01
SPEAKER_01: And if you are in Oregon, where is that concert?
37:04
SPEAKER_01: Tell me now.
37:05
SPEAKER_02: You can go and check us out.
37:06
SPEAKER_02: Uh, my band is called Limewire Summer.
37:08
SPEAKER_02: We're gonna be playing August 22nd at Happy Hours, which is uh for you, Eugene uh residents.
37:15
SPEAKER_02: That's the countryside bar and grill, the bar that's attached to it out there on River Road.
37:19
SPEAKER_02: Uh, we are a late 90s, early 2000s pop punk cover band.
37:24
SPEAKER_02: Drew, we're gonna be playing all your favorite Blink 182, Green Day, Fallout Boy, Yellow Card, you name it.
37:30
SPEAKER_02: Uh, we got a lot of them, and you're gonna be able to catch us all around the area uh very soon.
37:34
SPEAKER_02: But uh this big one kicking us off here, August 22nd.
37:38
SPEAKER_02: That's this Saturday, if you're listening to this when it comes out.
37:41
SPEAKER_01: And I think it's important to note whether you're in Junction City, Brownsville, all the way up to Corvallis, Springfield, hey, heck, if you're all the way down in Roseburg, you know you don't have a ton of live shows.
37:53
SPEAKER_01: Come up and see Marcus and put a little face to the name of what the the kind of drums the propaganda can buy.
38:00
SPEAKER_01: As uh Marcus is I'm I can't wait to come down and see your show.
38:04
SPEAKER_01: I know you've got a bunch of stuff coming up, and we will talk about it more on the next episode, and we'll get back to everything that makes the Pacific Northwest great.
38:13
SPEAKER_01: Um closing statement.
38:14
SPEAKER_01: What else you got, Marcus?
38:15
SPEAKER_02: You know what screams old money drew is playing other people's songs and trying to make money off of it.
38:21
SPEAKER_02: That is as old money as it gets, so come check us out.
38:24
SPEAKER_01: And you can tell he's a normal dude because some people in cover bands, you call him a cover band, they yell, Tribute Band! It's the same thing.
38:32
SPEAKER_01: Have a great day.
38:33
SPEAKER_01: We'll be back tomorrow.
