- 0:13It's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 21st of
- 0:16January. And today, would you believe, is
- 0:18actually the National Hugging Day.
- 0:21Today is the day that we remember that hugging is
- 0:24actually good for us. Remember that thing that we used
- 0:26to do to people before COVID arrived?
- 0:29We used to throw our arms around each other and embrace each
- 0:32other. We had dinner with some old
- 0:34friends over the weekend and we arrived and they gave me a hug
- 0:38and it felt so nice just to hug an old friend.
- 0:42So there will be people in your life that you can hug.
- 0:44I'm not saying go and hug randos and then get yourself in hot
- 0:48water. No, but you're special people.
- 0:51Throw your arms around them, squeeze them tight.
- 0:53The endorphins and all the good physical benefits and social
- 0:57connection. Oh, there's a bucket load of
- 0:59research saying how good hugging is for you.
- 1:02So hug a friend, hug a family member.
- 1:04Let us celebrate that wonderful tactile way that we greet each
- 1:09other and have done through the ages.
- 1:11And today there is not going to be so much hugging and greeting.
- 1:15As we read now, we kind of reach the section of First Kings where
- 1:20it really just goes through the story, king after king in the
- 1:24north and in Judah and how they interact and how they go
- 1:29according to God's set of criteria that he wants them to
- 1:32rule by. And friends, I'll, I'll give you
- 1:35a little spoiler. It's not pretty, so buckle
- 1:39yourselves up as we now begin working our way through these
- 1:43kings who will follow in the footsteps of their fathers as we
- 1:48go through. So let us get into it reading
- 1:50together First Kings, chapter 15.
- 2:03Abijah began to rule over Judah in the 18th year of Jeroboam's
- 2:07reign in Israel. He reigned in Jerusalem three
- 2:11years. His mother was Marker, the
- 2:14granddaughter of Absalom. He committed the same sins as
- 2:18his father before him, and he was not faithful to the Lord his
- 2:21God, as his ancestor David had been.
- 2:24But for David's sake, the Lord his God allowed his descendants
- 2:28to continue ruling, shining like a lamp, and he gave Abijah a son
- 2:33to rule after him in Jerusalem. For David had done what was
- 2:37pleasing in the Lord's sight and had obeyed the Lord's commands
- 2:41throughout his life, even in the affair concerning Uriah the
- 2:44Hittite. There was war between Abyjam and
- 2:48Jeroboam throughout Abyjam's reign.
- 2:51The rest of the events in Abyjam's reign and everything he
- 2:54did are recorded in the book of the History of the Kings of
- 2:57Judah. There was constant war between
- 3:00Abyjam and Jeroboam. When Abyjam died, he was buried
- 3:04in the city of David, and his son Assa became the next king.
- 3:09Assa began to rule over Judah in the 20th year of Jeroboam's
- 3:13reign in Israel. He reigned in Jerusalem for 41
- 3:17years. His grandmother was Marka, the
- 3:20granddaughter of Absalom. Assa did what was pleasing in
- 3:25the Lord's sight, as his ancestor David had done.
- 3:28He banished the male and female shrine prostitutes from the land
- 3:32and got rid of all the idols his ancestors had made.
- 3:35He even deposed his grandmother Marka for her position as Queen
- 3:39Mother because she had made an obscene Asherah pole.
- 3:44He cut down her obscene pole and burned it in the Kidron Valley.
- 3:48Although the Pagan shrines were not removed, Assa's heart
- 3:52remained completely faithful to the Lord throughout his life.
- 3:56He brought into the temple of the Lord the silver and gold and
- 3:59various items that he and his father had dedicated.
- 4:03There was constant war between King Assa of Judah and King
- 4:07Basha of Israel. King Basha of Israel invaded
- 4:11Judah and fortified Rama in order to prevent anyone from
- 4:15entering or leaving King Assa's territory in Judah.
- 4:19Assa responded by removing all the silver and gold that was
- 4:22left in the treasuries of the Temple of the Lord and the royal
- 4:26palace. He sent it with some of his
- 4:28officials to Ben Haddad, son of Tabramon, son of Hesion, the
- 4:33king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus.
- 4:36Along with this message, let there be a treaty between you
- 4:41and me, like the one between your father and my father.
- 4:44See, I'm sending you a gift of silver and gold.
- 4:48Break your treaty with King Basha of Israel so that he will
- 4:52leave me alone. Ben Haddad agreed to King Asa's
- 4:56request and sent the commanders of his army to attack the towns
- 5:00of Israel. They conquered the towns of Ijon
- 5:03Dan Abelbethmarka and all Kinareth and all the land of
- 5:08Naphtali. As soon as Basha of Israel heard
- 5:11what was happening, he abandoned his project of fortifying Rama
- 5:16and withdrew to Terza. Then King Assa sent an order
- 5:20throughout Judah requiring that everyone, without exception,
- 5:25would help carry away the building stones and Timbers that
- 5:28Basha had been using to fortify Rama.
- 5:31Assa used these materials to fortify the town of Gibba in
- 5:35Benjamin and the town of Mizpah. The rest of the events in Assa's
- 5:40reign, the extent of his power, everything he did, and the names
- 5:44of the cities he built are recorded in the book of the
- 5:47History of the Kings of Judah. In his old age, his feet became
- 5:52diseased. When Assa died, he was buried
- 5:56with his ancestors in the city of David.
- 5:58Then Jehoshaphat, Assa's son, became the next king.
- 6:04Nadab, son of Jeroboam, began to rule over Israel in the second
- 6:08year of King Assa's reign in Judah.
- 6:10He reigned in Israel two years, but he did what was evil in the
- 6:15Lord's sight and followed the example of his father,
- 6:17continuing the sins that Jeroboam had LED Israel to
- 6:20commit. Then Barsha, son of Ahijah from
- 6:25the tribe of Issacha, plotted against Nadab and assassinated
- 6:29him while he and the Israelite army were laying siege to the
- 6:32Philistine town of Gibbethon. Barsha killed Nadab in the third
- 6:37year of King Asa's reign in Judah, and he became the next
- 6:41king of Israel. He immediately slaughtered all
- 6:44the descendants of King Jeroboam so that not one of the royal
- 6:48family was left, just as the Lord had promised concerning
- 6:52Jeroboam by the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh.
- 6:56This was done because Jeroboam had provoked the anger of the
- 6:59Lord the God of Israel by the sins he had committed and the
- 7:03sins he had LED Israel to commit.
- 7:06The rest of the events in Nadab's reign and everything he
- 7:09did are recorded in the Book of the History of the Kings of
- 7:13Israel. There was constant war between
- 7:17King Assa of Judah and King Barsha of Israel.
- 7:21Barsha, son of Ahijah, began to rule over Israel in the third
- 7:26year of King Assa's reign in Judah.
- 7:28Barsha reigned in Terza 24 years, but he did what was evil
- 7:33in the Lord's sight and followed the example of Jeroboam,
- 7:37continuing the sins that Jeroboam had LED Israel to
- 7:40commit. Our Lord, as we see the chapters
- 7:51of our world turning from 1:00 to the next, our leaders rise
- 7:56and fall. Society pushes us this way and
- 8:00then back the other. Our friends come and go, our
- 8:04loved ones live and die. All these things happen, but you
- 8:09stay constant. Lord Jesus, you have set
- 8:13yourself upon that throne in heaven, and you continue to rule
- 8:18as our king, generation after generation after generation.
- 8:24And Lord, you rule with love and kindness and grace, and we thank
- 8:31you that you are a good, good king.
- 8:35We worship you, and we just recommit our lives to serve you,
- 8:41Jesus, in all the ways that you would lead us to respond.
- 8:45Open our hearts, give us ears to hear your words, give us eyes to
- 8:50see your ways, and give us a heart to respond.
- 8:55And we pray all of this in your saving name, Amen.
