- 0:36Quicker Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt pen knife.
- 0:39The Doctor Who commentary podcast.
- 0:43We 3 Kings of Orient are back together.
- 0:47Joe Ford, Luke Malloy and Dylan Reece.
- 0:50Hello, gentlemen. Hello.
- 0:53Hello, Luke Meeploy. Well done, Joe.
- 0:59Joe Ball. No, it doesn't work.
- 1:03The time has come, gentlemen, for us to finally.
- 1:07I never thought I'd get the call from Dylan Reece to say I'm
- 1:10ready, I'm ready to talk about the Star Beast, but here we are.
- 1:17We were supposed to do this a long time ago, and I was hating
- 1:20Doctor Who so much at the time that I was like, a really, can't
- 1:23I? I sat down and I watched it to
- 1:24do it and did a huge thing of negative points.
- 1:27Like I didn't have a single positive thing to say about it.
- 1:31And then I was just like, do you know what?
- 1:32I'm sick of bitching about Doctor Who at the moment.
- 1:35I'm just going to not watch it. Now it's just a time then for
- 1:38you to tell us that you in fact, you know, manipulated a work
- 1:42engagement so you couldn't take part in our strictly count
- 1:46hamster. All about one of the Shooter
- 1:48Gatwell seasons. No, that was not that.
- 1:50That was not a thing, but it was just I was for for this
- 1:55particular episode, I actually decided I didn't want to do The
- 1:58Star Beast anymore because I was sick of being negative about an
- 2:02era so much now. Has has your RTD 2 PTSD subsided
- 2:09or has it got worse? Well done.
- 2:13It has subsided a bit. It's still my least favorite era
- 2:17of the show. Ever.
- 2:18But yeah, absolutely. And you've.
- 2:22Seen the Peter Davidson era, right?
- 2:24I would. Rather.
- 2:26Watch Alfcott. Than space babies I'd.
- 2:29Rather watch Timefly, Arc of Infinity, Herminus.
- 2:33Yeah, I love Terminus, of course you do.
- 2:37And for me, while my while I have certain things that have
- 2:43revised on this, this to me is where the rot sets in and I
- 2:47still don't believe this is good enough to show on television.
- 2:51Well, sort of moving away from you just for a second because
- 2:55I'm sure you'll have plenty to say.
- 2:56Luke Malloy, I'd like you to paint a picture of the night
- 3:00that this was coming on. You know, sort of.
- 3:02Please tell us about the excitement that was building
- 3:05inside you. Oh yeah, it was.
- 3:07I'd been at the Christmas markets all day and in the place
- 3:10where and I was with my friend Big Doctor fun as well.
- 3:14So we've had a fair few stines before coming back to this.
- 3:17Couldn't have watched it in a better mood.
- 3:20It couldn't have gone better. This was this was Doctor.
- 3:23It was finally back after 5 miserable gloom years and oh
- 3:29boy. Are you 2 friends?
- 3:31I mean this diametrically opposing viewpoint.
- 3:35I should also point out that I went into this very positively.
- 3:38I only there was a brief. Last long.
- 3:41No, but there was a brief 8 minutes no.
- 3:44Aim in it. 8 seconds. I, I started to get my dad's a
- 3:49few weeks before this, but I thought, no, it's Russell T
- 3:51Davis, Mr. Television. He's going to do something
- 3:53amazing. And some of this is my own, you
- 3:56know, ideas of what I wanted from Doctor Who, and some of it
- 3:59is what is presented on screen. But I was not expecting to have
- 4:04such a violent reaction. Visceral.
- 4:07I respect I I messaged you guys, I messaged Mark Johnson, a few
- 4:12other people with about 15 minutes in them.
- 4:14It's just like this is shit. The violence in those words on
- 4:19our group chat, I mean, I was terrified of you at that point.
- 4:22It is true though, because if you go back to that too hot for
- 4:25TV, we did, where we were excited about the 60th.
- 4:29Yeah, the excitement is very much in the earth from all three
- 4:32of us. Absolutely.
- 4:33What was so funny was when we went through the three specials,
- 4:36there was always one person that kind of hated what special.
- 4:40So for this one it was Dylan for Wild Blue, Don't Do It was Luke
- 4:43who was like this is the worst thing ever and Dylan's going
- 4:46now. That was great.
- 4:47And so was I. And then the giggle.
- 4:49I can't remember. We all a bit ambivalent.
- 4:51I can't remember. I like the giggle, but I think
- 4:53everyone in the world found the ball throwing scene a bit
- 4:57disappointing. When you when you when you look
- 5:01at something like Day of the Doctor and how that what the
- 5:04climax of that was like. And there you've got shooty
- 5:07Gatwa with no trousers on playing catch.
- 5:10I don't mind, that's all. Good grief.
- 5:12And those dreadful doctors all standing in a row.
- 5:14We were. Talking about just saying, not
- 5:16the 60th anniversary finale, is it?
- 5:19No, I mean, go back to all the expectations that we had on the
- 5:23Too Hot For TV special, where we were guessing and there was Luke
- 5:27and me saying that it's gonna have all the songs from the
- 5:29classic series in Wild Blue Yonder.
- 5:32We don't know anything about it. So that's gonna be the one where
- 5:34Matt Smith comes back and all this bullshit we were coming out
- 5:36with. Not a bit of it.
- 5:38Christopher Eccleston's gonna be in this.
- 5:40That was my my big. Is that one of the details from
- 5:44the TARDIS? Because he didn't feel as if
- 5:45he'd sort of lonely, sort of classic fan load enough in the
- 5:5060th anniversary. I think his wording was he
- 5:52didn't feel like I'd celebrated the show in the 60th enough.
- 5:57And I think because I think there is a chance he sat in that
- 6:00edit room and went, oh, I'm really, I'm really proud of what
- 6:03we've done here. But it is the 60th and there
- 6:05isn't, you know, anything approaching like a big
- 6:10celebration because they the what the the big thing they got
- 6:13wrong. And I'm not the first person to
- 6:14say this is they should have said for the 60th, we're doing
- 6:17something a bit different. It's a mini series startering
- 6:20David Tennant and Catherine Tate and that is it.
- 6:23And like it would have brought the expectations right down.
- 6:27I think because I've got, I don't know a single fan that
- 6:31isn't a tiny bit disappointed that there wasn't.
- 6:34I mean there is sure the giggles a multi doctor story, but right?
- 6:38Come on, special implies more fun stuff in there or a big
- 6:44film, and these are sort of neither.
- 6:47They're like slightly above normal episodes.
- 6:50This is the remake of an old 70s comic.
- 6:52What do you mean there's nothing fan in there?
- 6:55Yeah. But yeah, but it's AI.
- 6:57William Hartnell is it? This is very much a Russell T
- 7:01Davis episode 1 and I've never been a huge fan of those, so I'm
- 7:07already on the back foot. Did you sort of reconsider this
- 7:09once you saw Space Babies and the Robot Revolution?
- 7:12So this is the greatest Doctor Who story I've ever seen
- 7:16compared to space babies, and I've never seen Robot
- 7:20Revolution, so I don't know. You ain't missing much.
- 7:23But we did love space babies, didn't we, Luke?
- 7:25Yeah, we did. But yeah, I agree, Robot
- 7:27Revolution is not worth a watch. Oh no, So bored.
- 7:31How do you feel about them sort of remaking?
- 7:33We've done Human Nature, we've done Jubilee, and now we're
- 7:36doing the Star Beast. Do you think that's OK to cherry
- 7:39pick stories from Doctor Who's past?
- 7:42Well, I mean, when the alternative is something like
- 7:44Empire of Death, which is a brand new story, you can only
- 7:48say, yeah. I think you've got this vast
- 7:52universe of extended media to pick from and sure, maybe you're
- 7:55not going to pick out the Doctor's black heart from his
- 7:58chest on the 7:00 on BBC. Or combat rock.
- 8:02Or combat rock, Yeah, but. I wish they would make both of
- 8:05them. There's so much brilliant stuff
- 8:08to cherry pick from them and as you are fond of pointing out,
- 8:10Joe Ford on your book clubs. Stephen Moffett, definitely.
- 8:16Yeah. I, I, I was actually quite
- 8:19excited to see Beep the Meep, but the story of the Star Beast
- 8:22is very slight in the comics and it's even they've somehow
- 8:25managed to make it even slighter here.
- 8:27And I think it needed something more to really sort of build
- 8:32what I would describe as something suitable for a modern
- 8:34television audience. Before we go in and press play
- 8:39on this now, Dylan, I know you've watched this this week
- 8:43and whilst you still don't like this, you found things to like
- 8:47in this which is much better than your initial very visceral
- 8:50reaction to it. Luke Malloy, have you rewatched
- 8:53this? I mean, what's your take
- 8:55watching this? I mean, it's just as good if not
- 8:57better than the night after. Of course, of course.
- 9:01I mean, I've enjoyed RTD 2 on the whole to be honest, but
- 9:07these these three, it never really got better than these
- 9:10three. I mean, I think the excitement
- 9:12was all here. Yeah, 70. 3 yards is a high
- 9:16point, but really this is something is lost after these
- 9:21three do. You think they should have
- 9:22probably tenant and time? Do you think they should have
- 9:24just run with them? If they could, yeah.
- 9:26I mean, I remember when, when this ended, when you've got him
- 9:30running around the TARDIS and he's back in there and she's
- 9:32back in there. And it was like, oh God, we've
- 9:35only got them for two more episodes, you know?
- 9:38And it, it felt like it could have gone backwards if we'd have
- 9:41had two seasons with them. But actually, I don't think it
- 9:44would. I rewatched this this week and I
- 9:48still really enjoyed it and I still think it's fun if a bit
- 9:51juvenile, but it is. It's a, it feels like a Sarah
- 9:53Jane adventure to me and I love those so I'm not complaining.
- 9:57I did think some of the comedy was a bit laboured this time and
- 10:02I did find the ending, all the binary binary stuff at the
- 10:06ending I was just like fucking hell, what is happening here?
- 10:09Like I I wasn't sure it was making an adequate enough point
- 10:15to justify how on the nose some of that stuff was in the climax.
- 10:20I mean, we'll get to it, but I think the last 10 minutes are
- 10:23some of the worst Doctor Who ever made.
- 10:26I think. I think it's borderline
- 10:27transphobic in places as well. Wow, Oh my God.
- 10:31Well, I can't wait to explore that well.
- 10:33And obviously everybody wants assist.
- 10:35Man's view on what transphobia is so strapping, everybody.
- 10:40You got it off with a trans person or two Ave.
- 10:42I'm sure you're you know. I've been around, I've run
- 10:44around the block. I would say that it makes
- 10:49absolute sense that me and Dylan have opposite views on this
- 10:52because it feels fundamentally like a story about Doctor Who
- 10:57getting its identity back, whether that is whether you
- 11:01agree with that or not. But it feels like Rusty Lewis
- 11:04wrote this as this is Doctor Who.
- 11:06It's back. It's been away for the last five
- 11:08years, but it's back. So feeling it's a chip N fan as
- 11:12me not a chip N fan. He's coming in from the outer
- 11:14direction. He thinks it's lost its
- 11:16identity. Yeah.
- 11:18I think and it's just slipped back to 2005 all over again or
- 11:21wherever we left off 2008. It's it's a show running on
- 11:25empty for me. This this is like I would rather
- 11:28it wasn't made than it was made. Wow.
- 11:31And I'm sort of zigzagging somewhere in the middle.
- 11:33So I think this is going to be an interesting sort of a
- 11:35conversation. Well, should we go in and see
- 11:38what the lights the Star Beast has to offer?
- 11:40Hell yeah. Malloy, would you care to count
- 11:42us in? 321.
- 11:47I love how you don't hang around, you're just straight in
- 11:50with a count. Yes, yeah.
- 11:52Star Beast. Exciting.
- 11:53My God, The Who? Universal who?
- 11:54We go. We gotta wait.
- 11:55Till did it work out? Oh my God.
- 12:00Do you remember when they added Martha to it?
- 12:01Everyone was like, Martha's got to be in it.
- 12:03They've added on to the home of a Oh, dear.
- 12:06Oh, come on, Dylan. Everything in this intro, which
- 12:11obviously we all know it looks terrible, is said in the
- 12:14conversation that the doctor has with the the unit scientific
- 12:20advisor when this episode stops for no reason to give an
- 12:23exposition dump to then start with one.
- 12:25It just says your audience is stupid and won't understand
- 12:29this. What's so odd, beyond the sort
- 12:31of really terrible green screen, right?
- 12:33It's that we're seeing a load of special effects from 2009.
- 12:38And a load of stuff that doesn't look good because it's not shot
- 12:41in high def from 2008. This.
- 12:43This to me says Doctor Who's a tired old show with ropey
- 12:47effects and doesn't look as good as the rest.
- 12:49Of I mean, not necessarily because it is the 60th.
- 12:51So it's it's just calling back to things.
- 12:54The saddest thing, the thing that upsets me the most about
- 12:56this is our old tenant looks. It doesn't look best old in the
- 12:58rest of the. No, there's something about the
- 13:01light in there. I mean, your favorite director
- 13:03of all time, Rachel Talele, that gave us Heaven Sent, but she
- 13:07didn't do that. No, she didn't.
- 13:08Do that. She didn't do the opening of oh,
- 13:11did she not? No, she let.
- 13:13She went online and disowned this opening from her.
- 13:17But she did do the climax of this, right?
- 13:19Yeah, well, she should hang her head in shame anyway.
- 13:22Then she. Did the whole episode apart from
- 13:24this intro bit because it was. Oh, that's a very unpleasant
- 13:29shot of David. Terrible is it?
- 13:31Staring straight out the camera. I think I'm a little ahead of
- 13:34you. I'm already on the titles.
- 13:35Is that? What George and Moffett sees
- 13:36when they're having it off. Oh, that's terrifying.
- 13:41What about this title sequence then?
- 13:42I do quite like the title sequence, I hate the way the
- 13:45logo comes in like a dot PNG, and I quite like the theme tune.
- 13:52Yeah. And great to see Pat Mills and
- 13:54Dave Gibbons. I do.
- 13:56You know what though? I really felt watching it this
- 13:58time. I do miss second Akanola.
- 14:01The music Man is so fucking overstated.
- 14:04Yeah, it's sad. It's.
- 14:06Dreadful. This Camden Market stuff.
- 14:08The music's intolerable. And the only reason they're in
- 14:10Camden Market, because obviously once again it got to be
- 14:12Leicester Square, was there was something, there was something
- 14:15busy going on there, like a protest or something.
- 14:17So was it supposed to be Leicester Square?
- 14:19It was supposed to be the central London iconography, but
- 14:22they couldn't get sent to. London, it looks way more.
- 14:25Interesting. Yeah.
- 14:26Central London. I mean, I think this episode is
- 14:30the best RTD to looks really, and that's just because Rachel
- 14:33today, he's doing some good shots in it.
- 14:36And Even so, wild blue Yonder. Wild Yonder looks.
- 14:40That's that horrible PlayStation Two corridor.
- 14:43Oh. Gorgeous.
- 14:44Yeah. I think Wild Blue Yonder is the
- 14:46worst Doctor Who's looked in years.
- 14:49Well, you're mad, that's why. Agreed.
- 14:52Apart from the robot revolution, you should check that out.
- 14:56We'll be back. Next time.
- 14:57Oh, the CGI and the robot revolution.
- 15:00Oh, it's dismal. It's actually a completely
- 15:02different show. I'm thinking of the Robot
- 15:04Revolution. Compared to this, it's
- 15:05completely different. Now, do we think this is how we
- 15:09should have had our two characters reunite?
- 15:11Would we be better off telling the story through the eyes of
- 15:13Rose? I know Joe, you said.
- 15:15No, she can't act. No, she can't act.
- 15:19And we want to see Tennant. We want to see Tennant.
- 15:21No, we want to see Tay. Come on.
- 15:24So my big thing for this rewatch and that, and the reason I don't
- 15:29hate it so much is because watching this again, I'm like, I
- 15:34have the same feeling as when I saw Jodie Whittaker in that
- 15:37finale, whatever it was called, the reality War.
- 15:38It's like oh the Doctor's back, which I because for me she to
- 15:43Gatwa completely fails playing the role and is and just There
- 15:47is no is interpretation and the writing doesn't work, whereas
- 15:50this is recognizably the character of the.
- 15:52Doctor watching Tate right this week when I watched this, I only
- 15:55watched this one. I and I put it in a message to
- 15:58you guys. I went man, she makes Millie and
- 16:02Verada look so bland. There's just so much personality
- 16:07and humour. It just beams off her.
- 16:09Yeah, she's brilliant. But that's not even the right.
- 16:11And that's just Catherine Tate. She's just got presents.
- 16:15Yeah, but I mean, I love how quickly this gets into things.
- 16:18Like we're in Camden, there's a spaceship, the Doctor and Don
- 16:21are already back together. It's just it's straight off.
- 16:26But we're still doing that. Obviously she can't remember,
- 16:28right? Well, that is the story though.
- 16:31Now. Did did Sean Noble not meet the
- 16:3410th Doctor? Oh, chance Finger, I can see his
- 16:39head twisted in the end of time. Yeah, so potentially because his
- 16:46head twisted, he never did, right?
- 16:48Well, he's trying to hide away from Donna, isn't?
- 16:50He's trying to just hang out with Wilf.
- 16:52And then even at the wedding, he's far away.
- 16:54I'm going to say no. He's a very nice, even if he did
- 16:58sort of middish character. He's he's nice, but there's
- 17:01nothing particularly vivid about him.
- 17:04But he's a nice guy. Yeah, but even if he did see
- 17:07him, like would you remember a bloke from 50 I suppose, if he
- 17:10was in your full room now? People say that there's no
- 17:14difference between 10:00 and then and now there there is.
- 17:17He's he's learned some acting skills between 2008 and whenever
- 17:23this went out. I think he's got a bit of the
- 17:25other. I actually think purposely he's
- 17:28took a bit of the other Doctors and manages to have that.
- 17:31He's got like, the sneakiness of Matt Smith and a bit more
- 17:35authority like Peter Capaldi, like.
- 17:37When he's got a scream, he ain't doing that anymore.
- 17:40You know, he sort of brings it down a bit.
- 17:42And you see it in wild blue Yonder when he and in this where
- 17:45he's like, why does it have to be this?
- 17:47And he's being angry. It's it's a better acting of
- 17:50angry than I think. He doesn't always hit him his
- 17:53previously. You know what the bit it's a bit
- 17:55at the end of this where he says, no, you are not.
- 17:57And he really says it like his voice is breaking, he's about to
- 18:00cry, but it it just doesn't go over the top like he used.
- 18:03I mean, I love seeing it back in the day, don't get me wrong.
- 18:06Yeah, I think a huge difference here is that I grew up with
- 18:08David Tennant as well. He he was like a child of the
- 18:13hero for years. So he but I never seen anything
- 18:17bad to him the first time. He was just perfect upon
- 18:20perfect. Now this on fire warehouse here
- 18:24looks almost as bad as the on fire department store.
- 18:27And how's? The same flames, isn't it?
- 18:30Come on, we're 20 odd years later and you can't the CGI
- 18:34flames. I've misremembered, but Gemma
- 18:37Redgrave don't turn up in this, does she?
- 18:38No, she's busy being There's only room for one bland actor in
- 18:42this. And don't you come after Ruth
- 18:45Madeley, all right? I was talking about Rose.
- 18:47That's. My heebie Harrison from the six
- 18:49boxer audio. She's fabulous.
- 18:51She's she's. Great in this as.
- 18:52Well, she's not as good as Maurice Gibbons.
- 18:54Though what are you talking about?
- 18:56That kid on a tricycle? Yeah.
- 18:59She's she's not, she's not as good as Osgood.
- 19:02No one's as good as the vlinks. We'll save the Osgood chat for 2
- 19:07odd for TV, but you can fuck off.
- 19:09I love Osgood, she's brilliant. Oh, right, she's.
- 19:12She's charming enough, but anyone seems charming compared
- 19:15to Gemma Redgrave. Bring back Malcolm.
- 19:18Oh, please. Yes.
- 19:20I couldn't believe when I learned it was supposed to be a
- 19:22day at the doctor. Yeah, wonderful.
- 19:25So shitty looking flames, OK looking spaceship.
- 19:29You know this is all fine. That looks cool.
- 19:32Look at that spaceship. That looks great.
- 19:34And then they've built the bottom of it in the studio.
- 19:36Fabulous. Although like all of this stuff
- 19:41about the soldiers being possessed and then this very
- 19:44long conversation with the pacing is a bit weird.
- 19:47Yeah. I I miss the doctor being sneaky
- 19:51and covert. I mean, it just looks so cool.
- 19:55I can forgive so much of what's going on when the doctor's just
- 19:59being cool. What, did you forget about Jodie
- 20:01Whittaker? Yeah, how cool she was.
- 20:08Oh, we're just watching now. Yeah, sorry.
- 20:10Well done chaps. But, but I'm also here, I'm
- 20:12like, why isn't there more? Reckon it doesn't take much in a
- 20:15celebration to throw in a little bit more recognisable units, be
- 20:19it characters as you know, Kate Stewart as you.
- 20:21Mentioned. John Levine.
- 20:23John Levine. This is a lovely scene where
- 20:26they're walking down the road. Are you guys there yet?
- 20:29Yes, Yeah, yeah. What?
- 20:31What you like it when she gets dead Named?
- 20:33No. It's just a lovely like moment
- 20:35of this is how the things that trans people have to go through,
- 20:39yeah. It feels very real.
- 20:40I love all the stuff of Sylvia, who's trying so hard to get it
- 20:45right and still slips up because you do.
- 20:47And that's what I want from Russell T Davis at his best when
- 20:50he he his sort of, he can throw in those or used to be able to
- 20:54throw in those sort of political motives and social commentary so
- 20:57effortlessly. But this is subtle.
- 20:59We've we've Jacqueline kid. Yes, at the end of the episode
- 21:02when she's there going binary binary.
- 21:04But I said OK with subtlety has left the.
- 21:06Building, I mean, even halfway through when the Meep says that
- 21:09thing about the, there's a really clunky line, isn't there?
- 21:12When the Doctor like mispronounced the Meep and you
- 21:16just think like 15 minutes ago, you've got this Sylvia getting
- 21:19it wrong, not being punished by Donna or the plot or anyone.
- 21:23She's just trying to do the right thing and it's all the
- 21:25more relatable for it. And we have to say, look, we did
- 21:28meet Jacqueline King, didn't we, recently at the convention.
- 21:31And she was just heaven to be with, even for those few
- 21:35seconds. Yeah, and she, she signed my
- 21:38picture. Tuna Madras.
- 21:40And I told her that Turn Left was my favorite episode of the
- 21:43new series, and she said I had great taste.
- 21:46It's, it's great to see her again as well, You know, like I,
- 21:49I wasn't crying out for Sean's return, but it's nice to have
- 21:52him there and it makes sense. But Jacqueline King, when they
- 21:55were like, she's coming back, I, I was like, yes, we're in.
- 21:58I know you're gonna fight me on this, Dylan, but my favorite
- 22:01part of this episode is the bit where the RAF warriors attack on
- 22:04the strike. All of that, and they're going
- 22:06through the lofts and all of that.
- 22:08It's just crazy energy and silly and perfect.
- 22:11I've got some very positive things to say about that.
- 22:14And Gucci, you chat with this no money on the screen.
- 22:17I shall fight you, No. But the point is they spent all
- 22:19their money on building this house like that's a set.
- 22:24They build the house to blow it up in the thing.
- 22:26And I'm just like. It's building a house that
- 22:28expensive in production terms. I mean, I built half a flat and
- 22:32it cost a quarter of a million clearly for you.
- 22:35May as well just buy a house and blow it up.
- 22:38And then they make that mistake again in church on Ruby Road,
- 22:41and so this time they don't even finish the.
- 22:43Script the longest hallway of all time, the Infinity corridor.
- 22:47Set builds are so expensive, like and I don't see in the
- 22:52attack on the House, I don't see anything that you couldn't have
- 22:55done in a real house, you know? I do miss though, because I
- 22:59always loved the tension between Donna and Sylvia and I do miss
- 23:03that you know this. The in Partners in Crime this
- 23:06scene was her sitting at the table while Sylvia is running
- 23:09around screaming at her for hours and.
- 23:11Hours just feel a bit more like mature.
- 23:13We couldn't just have that again.
- 23:14Could it's it's it's like years have passed.
- 23:18Yeah, I don't know. I just love a bitch.
- 23:19I just love a bitch in Doctor Who.
- 23:21I love all these lines. Like it's these sort of lines
- 23:25that just get that excitement going again, get the goosebumps
- 23:28going again, the ones that you heard in the trailers all the
- 23:30time. Maury's music in the background
- 23:32make you feel everything. Like something's missing, Luke,
- 23:35that something should be there. Yeah.
- 23:37I mean, when it's when it's good, when, when RTD can really
- 23:42make you like Hurst and it's good, yeah.
- 23:47And there were a lot of moments in the in wobble Yonder where I
- 23:50I was just on edge. The wrong Donna.
- 23:54Oh. Boy Fudge Fudge was a character
- 23:56that had a big part in the comic strip.
- 23:58Yeah, God, listen, have you all done recently?
- 24:01He's. So much more likeable here than
- 24:03he is on. He was very annoying.
- 24:05He was Christ. In the audio is.
- 24:08That it is that what he does that one line.
- 24:10No, he looks out of a window like that.
- 24:12Oh wow, my God. Yeah, I know.
- 24:15So what is this, the escape bolt?
- 24:17Yeah, and I quite like the sort of kitsch design that's like the
- 24:21comics. Like, it's very cool.
- 24:23I think if you like the Star Beast, you like this adaptation,
- 24:25though it's taking a it feels like a comic on screen.
- 24:29Do you think Russell knew that Yasmin Finney was such a
- 24:32dreadful actress that he deliberately didn't channel this
- 24:36story through Rose's eyes? I mean there must be something,
- 24:40some so. Normally he would.
- 24:42He does it with Rose, he does it with Martha, he does it with
- 24:44Donna. He does.
- 24:46It's not serious, is it? It's it's three specials.
- 24:50But you know, she does keep coming back.
- 24:53Oh look, it's the meep. The MEAP who successfully
- 24:56manages to not look the same in any shot in any scene in this
- 25:00thing. It's insane that they've got a
- 25:03profit and they've got a CGI model and never once does it.
- 25:07Match. I think he's going.
- 25:09He's going for the adipose, isn't he?
- 25:10That sort of cute horror? I think you don't land in the
- 25:15same way. I do think that like 90% of the
- 25:19audience will not notice anything and the other 10% will
- 25:23just go. But so I have.
- 25:26A Not everyone's a TV producer, you know, watching Doctor.
- 25:29But I have a question for you. Is this the best place for a
- 25:33Disney Plus audience to start? Absolutely not.
- 25:36But that was always weird. And then even if they get
- 25:39through this, there's a random Christmas special.
- 25:41Yeah. And then?
- 25:42Then space babies. And then space babies and stuff.
- 25:44Yeah, it's almost like you didn't wallet to work.
- 25:48It's bizarre. I loved this reason of like,
- 25:51well, it's the last thing anyone's gonna expect.
- 25:53Yeah, for a reason. I before you, I absolutely love
- 25:59these screens that come out of your Sonic screwdriver.
- 26:02But why don't we do it again? See him again?
- 26:03Why didn't we ever do it again? I can think of times in the next
- 26:07couple of years when they come in quite handy.
- 26:10They make so much sense and they look so cool.
- 26:13I could, I could watch, you know you get those like 8 hour
- 26:15YouTube things that play jazz. I could watch just the doctor
- 26:19looking at one of those screens for 8 hours with more.
- 26:21He's very old, though, during that action sequence loop where
- 26:24he's building the sort of box that let's go through the
- 26:26hallway. Bear with me.
- 26:28It's like watching someone put up a load of shelves in the
- 26:30middle of an action sequence. It's very yes.
- 26:33Very Doctor Who. That's what he uses this sort of
- 26:35screwdriver for. But back in the day, they
- 26:37literally. Just had a square gun and blew
- 26:39hole in the floor and went through it in two seconds.
- 26:42We've got to. We've got to move on.
- 26:43Joe No, yeah, it's slower. Now it slows down the action so
- 26:48much, those squares, it's a very cool idea, but it you should be
- 26:51able to do it in a second and that is it slows, it slows it
- 26:54right down. Come on.
- 26:56Come on, it's going to make some Shields now and put her foes in
- 26:58boxes. Thank you.
- 27:00Oh, Luke. I I love this Sonic shield as
- 27:05well like oh this Sonic is I really like the big sonics, you
- 27:09know the 11-12 this one. You know what's a bit of a shame
- 27:13though, is that the Jacqueline Rayner fronted Heebie Harrison
- 27:19audios hand roof Madeley a very rounded character who gets a ton
- 27:26of time to explore her character.
- 27:29We barely spend any time with Shirley in the next two years.
- 27:32Yeah, but Shirley's not a companion, isn't it?
- 27:34But I haven't imagined, you know, on Big Finish she does
- 27:37actually get through the TARDIS doors, which, you know, she.
- 27:39Gets erased from history, Luke by a dreadful person who wants
- 27:43to get rid of all disabled people.
- 27:46I see that guy from Rosa. It could be now it's Imogen
- 27:52stubs of all people, so. So we we're in the same place
- 27:55for a while here while the doctor explains the plot that he
- 27:58explained 10 minutes ago on some bad green screen.
- 28:00And it's done much better than here, although it is a little
- 28:03bit slow. Why didn't he regenerate into
- 28:07Jodie Whittaker's costume? I mean, no one really knows.
- 28:12You've seen the heart and the legit and the world supposed to
- 28:14be. I've been in a way it.
- 28:15Will Well, there was, there was the whole thing that Russell
- 28:17said. I didn't want, you know, the
- 28:19Doctor to anybody to use that image and take the Mickey out of
- 28:24the Doctor being in woman's clothing.
- 28:26Did you see how hot Sasha Dewan looked in Power of the Doctor
- 28:29wearing those clothes? Did you see she get away at any
- 28:31point in the last? So it doesn't stand.
- 28:34And then there was a rumour that it was like, well, he didn't
- 28:36like the costume, but if he didn't like the costume, why did
- 28:38he then put her back in it when she showed up?
- 28:41They could have done a pool and just, you know.
- 28:42Made it's definitely a a reinvention thing.
- 28:46It's there. It's again, it's this thing of
- 28:48we don't, we don't want to establish that with the
- 28:50Chibnulator. Also, is there a specific on
- 28:54screen mention of what is supposed to be this Doctor's
- 28:58first adventure, the DWM strip Liberation of the Daleks?
- 29:02Is that mentioned here or in that little Dalek castaway that
- 29:04they did? I'm not sure because.
- 29:06It's not mentioned here. I mean, that was such a weird
- 29:09thing. DWM, we're going to give you a
- 29:10massive gift. You can or the first story of
- 29:13this doctor so we don't have to. That was very exciting at the
- 29:17time though. It's a fun trip is we had we had
- 29:20a year to wait and in that meantime you got you got an
- 29:24adventure right there. I mean, I will say that Rusty
- 29:28Davis did give Doctor Who Magazine far more than Chris
- 29:31Jubnal. Better than.
- 29:33People sitting around the table, you know, enjoy Revolution of
- 29:36the Daleks. Better than destination Scar,
- 29:39wasn't it? What was that all about?
- 29:43A jazzy music. That's one where I'd agree with
- 29:45you. Segan should have come back.
- 29:47So our guards are about to be hypnotized.
- 29:51Now in the comics, the beep the meeps can do mass hypnotizing,
- 29:54can't they? Or doesn't he use the power of
- 29:57the black sum or something? In his eyes, I'm a.
- 30:00Little bit like, if they're so powerful, why not just do this
- 30:04to everybody? But this all feels very Sarah
- 30:07Jane Adventures now, all the light going in their eyes and
- 30:11things like that. It's.
- 30:12The colour palette as well, isn't it?
- 30:14That just makes it feel a little bit like.
- 30:16But this and this is the colour palette they run with an RTD
- 30:19too. That's why it has that sort of
- 30:21childish feeling over it. Yeah, it all.
- 30:24It all feels like the Suntar and Stratagem.
- 30:26Well, no, it's more muted I think than RTD one, but it's
- 30:30just as colourful. Like I don't think it's as as
- 30:34primary colours as RCD one was at times.
- 30:38Yeah. I think Rose Noble, Yes.
- 30:42Now come on, I'm the only person talking about Yasmin Finney and
- 30:44Rose Noble. What do you guys think?
- 30:47Are we shit? Yeah, as I as I said in our
- 30:50chat, she makes Sarah Sutton look like Daniel Day Lewis.
- 30:56Can you all me when I'll take a drink please?
- 31:00Jesus Christ. I had a minus bit to do with her
- 31:04cast, her rise to fame, but when she was cast in Heart Stopper
- 31:08because she was street cast in the role and you know.
- 31:12I love right contract, well done.
- 31:14It's all my fault. You gave her work.
- 31:16Okay, well. To be honest, I mean, this is
- 31:19the the episode where she's the most in it or she's got the most
- 31:23to do. Like it's that it doesn't bother
- 31:26me in any way, but I don't think she's very good.
- 31:29You love the fact as well. You know, Rachel Tallele once
- 31:32gave us, you know, heaven, the sin, a treatise on grief and the
- 31:36horror of losing somebody. And now she's got beat the meat
- 31:39guy. Please be my friend.
- 31:41Please be my friend. I mean tonally, man.
- 31:44And it. Wasn't good enough for RTD.
- 31:47I genuinely wonder why they didn't give her a wild blue
- 31:51Yonder because I think she would have done a much better job of
- 31:53it in terms of the aesthetic than.
- 31:57Any. I love it too but it looks cheap
- 32:01where and I just think it needs somebody who really cares about
- 32:04special effects. There's a very much this will do
- 32:08attitude towards. It What would she have done with
- 32:09space babies? She killed herself.
- 32:13It's like it doesn't feel like we're reaching for cinema
- 32:16though, like we was during the Chipnol era.
- 32:18It really does feel like we're back in TV.
- 32:20That's. The backwards step, isn't it?
- 32:21We're back in. Houses and back streets and, you
- 32:24know, all the sort of mundane settings that we used to.
- 32:27Have and even on the nightmare and my mate who had like the
- 32:30Chipnol era love for us today was they were telling we're
- 32:32saying that I was saying this is amazing, but it doesn't look
- 32:35like anywhere near as good as what we've had and you can't.
- 32:39Scale isn't it, I think. And it's just, yeah, Rusty Davis
- 32:44just prefers the television look, And I think that's the
- 32:46wrong choice when you're going to Disney Plus.
- 32:49Here we go. This is where it all goes really
- 32:50great. This set piece is great, isn't
- 32:53it? There's.
- 32:53One bit. There's one bit where the camera
- 32:55swoops down the street and the RAF Warriors are firing and
- 32:58flying through the air and we swoop through into the loft and
- 33:02they're all running through the loft from one house to another.
- 33:05It's fabulous. I agree and I think it that that
- 33:08bit does look great. But this this like next two
- 33:11minutes is I mean, we I was laughing a lot.
- 33:14I still find it very fully the most.
- 33:17Slapping. I don't really like it when they
- 33:19slap the doctor. I do.
- 33:21Mum should always slap doctors. You're a violent man, Dylan
- 33:26Reece. But yeah, no, this is things are
- 33:30ramping up here. We've got a bloody Martian in
- 33:33the shed. Space, right?
- 33:36Yeah. I mean, it's all, it's all great
- 33:39lives. Oh, my God.
- 33:40Don't look, Donna, don't look. I mean, it's like a farce now,
- 33:44isn't it? I said she belts him.
- 33:50Here we go again. It's that skinny man.
- 33:53Oh, Luke, in many ways, we have the same mind.
- 33:59She's gone. For the love of gods, please.
- 34:04I do like this stuff. I just and when we get to the
- 34:07battle sequence, it looks great, but I am just a bit like, is
- 34:10that all you've got? Because I don't think it's
- 34:12anything that hasn't that the previous eras, including the
- 34:16Moffett era, couldn't have done. But feels like they're reaching
- 34:19for it going. This is the only time Doctor Who
- 34:21could ever do anything like. This I, I think this was fine
- 34:24for three episodes and then I think I was expecting it to jump
- 34:28up a level when it when it went to Disney.
- 34:31The fact it doesn't leaves this as the high point where you
- 34:34thought it was going to be the. And there were rumours in fandom
- 34:37that this wasn't Disney. But it was.
- 34:39This is all it was shown on Disney Plus.
- 34:40It was paid for by Disney. This is all part of the Disney
- 34:43deal. And this is.
- 34:45Hard to tell anyone that Disney hadn't seen those who have any
- 34:48idea what was going on. I think we should say that the
- 34:51Chip Nawira couldn't do domestic comedy.
- 34:53Don't you remember the Wi-Fi family of resolution?
- 34:59No, I mean, I mean, this is no way as funny as that bit at the
- 35:02start of the Halloween apocalypse.
- 35:03I mean, often that's much funnier than this.
- 35:07I mean, no, there's only one funny bit in the chip.
- 35:09No, you're in that release. Teasing.
- 35:12None. Oh, teasing.
- 35:14I love that guy. I love that guy.
- 35:18Oh, so this is a puppet now? Yeah.
- 35:22Is he always a puppet or sometimes he's?
- 35:24CG It's a mix of puppetry and CG and a man in a costume.
- 35:30This was a weird beat, right? Knowing that Bernie Crimson died
- 35:34and then it's played as like a weird joke that he's dead, but
- 35:37he's not dead. One of the few notes that he
- 35:39took Russell took when they were doing this is that he was going
- 35:43to kill off Bernard at the end of the end of the giggle and
- 35:47Phil Collins and said don't fucking do it.
- 35:51He's off shooting. Badgers or something?
- 35:55I guess so at this point Bernard Cribbins is still alive and
- 36:00presumably going to be have a little role in the.
- 36:02Gig Oh yeah, I just think if you're gonna if you're gonna
- 36:04wear this you just cut that yeah 10 second exchange out because I
- 36:08I was watching the night going oh he's they're doing a memory
- 36:12for it, but no they're not. Whose heart didn't explode out
- 36:15of his their chest when he turned up at the end of Wobbly.
- 36:17I mean, it's just a like, is it the end of this for the end of
- 36:20that? It's the end of that.
- 36:21Yeah. God, it's great.
- 36:24That was when I knew why Blue Yonder was doomed not to have
- 36:27any other doctors in it, because the the what?
- 36:29I heard one of the names that was leaked and it was Bernard
- 36:31Cribbins. And I was like, OK, we knew he
- 36:32was coming. I still can't believe they
- 36:34dropped a plane on London at the end.
- 36:37What is going on? I mean, they don't even deal
- 36:40with it. Well, Chip no wipes out all the
- 36:42fucking universe and they don't deal with that.
- 36:45Well, they did in wobble Yonder a little chat about it.
- 36:51Great breaking news. The war between the land and the
- 36:54sea is going head to head with the I'm A Celebrity final.
- 36:57Oh shit, they've got no hope. I don't think it had any hope.
- 37:03Me and Luke were just saying actually before you turned out,
- 37:05but none, neither one of us realised it was on this weekend.
- 37:08Yeah, it's weird, isn't it? The Homo Aqua are coming.
- 37:16The less said about that, the better.
- 37:19So big explosion will be there, right?
- 37:22Yeah, we've got past a few clunky lines and now we get some
- 37:25exciting Wraith Warrior action I love.
- 37:29The Raft Warriors, Yeah. Well, they're an actual monster.
- 37:33I like them and I think, but again in your opening story of
- 37:38this is what Doctor can do. Like be glowing red eyes coming
- 37:42out of the smoke. It's all meant to be quite fun.
- 37:45Yeah, it's silly. It's supposed to be.
- 37:46We're not. We're not meant to be doing.
- 37:47Weeping Angels are. No, but it it, it doesn't look
- 37:50like anything but a man in a costume.
- 37:54It looks like a not a big man in a costume.
- 37:57Yeah, it's not as fast as I got. Come on.
- 38:00But you know, the homo Aqua as my as a too hot to as the host
- 38:06who hot for TV, seeing the seeing the Rap Warriors in the
- 38:11flesh is a little bit exciting. It's.
- 38:14Great. Yeah, it's great.
- 38:15It's. Great, all this stuff is
- 38:16exciting and then Doctor Who stops to build the.
- 38:18Machine No, this is great. Oh, it's.
- 38:22Fine, but he should be able to just ZAP and they're there.
- 38:24No, I like the build and the move.
- 38:27That is so cool. I just love how slow it is for
- 38:31them getting up the stairs and the poor old meep slowing them
- 38:34all down. I would be doing that.
- 38:36There's absolutely room there for the stray laser to get
- 38:39through and take out Rose Noble or the.
- 38:42Yeah, you make a good point there.
- 38:46Yeah, I would be drawing the doors and moving them.
- 38:50I would be doing that all the time.
- 38:53Yeah, like I think maybe you really can reconnect with your
- 38:56inner child watching this, Luke. It's more than.
- 38:59Any Yeah, it's David. Because this was your end to
- 39:02Doctor Who, wasn't it? All of this.
- 39:04And he's not lost it. It's not like watching an actor
- 39:06that's come back to the role and they're basically not there, you
- 39:09know, like the later red dwarfs. It's like he's actually seems to
- 39:14have it more. Like we were saying, he's he's
- 39:15developed as an actor. Look on the Ralph Warriors
- 39:18flying there. Oh, come on, that's great.
- 39:23You're, you're right. It, it, it does have iconography
- 39:25for kids. The question is, were any kids
- 39:27actually watching this or was it all the people?
- 39:29We're not having that argument again, aren't.
- 39:31We but just watching. Was it all the people like you,
- 39:35Luke, who loved this era as a kid and maybe went away from the
- 39:38show, not like you and then came back because David Tennant and
- 39:41Catherine Tate? Oh yes, that's why there's no
- 39:44one left but those 3. Whether they're watching it or
- 39:47not, there's far more for kids to watch here than that ball
- 39:50fest. Heaven sent an old man walking
- 39:52around a castle for a billion years, but they'd rather watch
- 39:56flying insects going around with laser beams.
- 39:58They probably would. Yes, but kids are stupid.
- 40:04Well, you like the McCoy era when you were a child, didn't
- 40:07you? You were very stupid.
- 40:10I love this bit in the loft looking.
- 40:12Yeah, God, really cool look. See.
- 40:14I said something nice. No, we haven't had the bit yet
- 40:17where the camera zooms along the road and everyone's firing at
- 40:20everybody and then it goes through into the loft.
- 40:22It's so and you just see the meep go really slowly past the
- 40:25hole. We don't sort of mention that
- 40:27the doctors just sort of stop trying to share.
- 40:30Here we go, here we go. Watch it.
- 40:33Boo Boo, Boo Boo. Flames fire again, going right
- 40:37up into the sky. But it's only a drone like it's
- 40:41not like. Dylan, let me enjoy my life, all
- 40:43right? It looks great, but everybody's
- 40:45like, Oh my God, what amazing shot.
- 40:47It's only a drone. Dylan They used the drone on
- 40:49adolescence and everyone lost their fucking minds.
- 40:52Do you think they borrowed it off Chris Chapman from all those
- 40:54documentaries? The moon balloon produces.
- 40:59Or they've flown up a car there. Doesn't a car go flying in a
- 41:02minute? That that car also meant Romeo
- 41:05in the giggle. Look at them flying past the
- 41:07camera and then here we go straight through into the loft.
- 41:10Watch the meep crawling past it. Beep beep.
- 41:14I was gonna say is yeah, the doctors just shot.
- 41:16Stop trying to shield Donna from what's going on Port.
- 41:19When things are just this fun and this cool, you just don't
- 41:22really. There is that lovely moment just
- 41:25before they they scream that he does the screams where or as
- 41:28he's doing it, where he passes the the Sonic to Donna to hold
- 41:31and she just sort of does it and think and that point I'm a bit.
- 41:35Like, oh, this. Look at them tiptoeing past the
- 41:37door. This is great.
- 41:40The man's asleep. Me.
- 41:41Me. I think, well, you know, this
- 41:44is, don't you? Who?
- 41:46This is he's called Billy and he's the milkman from the stolen
- 41:50Earth's best mate. No.
- 41:52That's what it says in the target novel, yeah.
- 41:55Gary Russell, he's got across every team and so every.
- 42:02The milkman from the Stolen Earth, IE Stu Ferguson.
- 42:07His best mate is Billy, sat on the couch right there, not
- 42:11making any of that up. I love the fact as well.
- 42:13I've got a mate whose kids did watch this and had no idea the
- 42:17twist about the meep was coming and was genuinely flawed when it
- 42:21turned out to be evil. I'm trying, I'm desperately
- 42:25trying to find who the actor is that plays is.
- 42:28He wouldn't have been called Billy in the thing.
- 42:29No, no, he's named Billy Poster. Can I say something a little
- 42:35controversial? Don't think Miriam Margulies
- 42:39does very good voice work in this.
- 42:41No, I think Miriam Margulies is possibly a bit of an overapted
- 42:45personality. Yeah, no, I mean, I think when
- 42:48she goes on about fannies on chat shows and things, she's
- 42:51hilarious. But when she's sort of going,
- 42:53yeah, well, I'm a little. I mean, what?
- 42:55What else do you want from the ME?
- 42:56I'm not saying it's good or bad, I just don't don't know what
- 42:59else I would. Now we're we're at the point
- 43:01where I lose all goodwill with this.
- 43:03But sorry but can I just say I really like it when the Doctor
- 43:07just drives a car. It's always, it always strikes
- 43:10me as like an odd visual that pick Polly does it in the Zeigon
- 43:13episode. If Tom Baker can pull up
- 43:15Barristers Week out of his pocket in The Stones of Blood,
- 43:17then David Tennant can do it in the Star Beast.
- 43:19And much used by the Polish box as well We must.
- 43:22I've got to admit, I think after that bit this did feel like it
- 43:25slams the brakes sort of it. All of a sudden we're just stood
- 43:28in a car park talking bollocks and this, this is the point
- 43:33where I'm done. Basically this is.
- 43:36Like, no, no, no. But seriously, remember all the
- 43:38different places we go to him, the Halloween apocalypse, all
- 43:41those vistas that we go to. A warehouse, a house and a car
- 43:45park and a bit of Camden isn't good enough Like this.
- 43:48Yeah, but. Right.
- 43:49He's absolutely inured in television.
- 43:52The Halloween apocalypse looks worse than anything here.
- 43:55Oh shut up. Absolutely.
- 43:58On with those spitting pools of acids.
- 44:01Horrible. It's the worst.
- 44:03Size. Ever.
- 44:04Plus that that gag with the the mattress and the TARDIS console
- 44:08where we've got us all talking for months.
- 44:10Got me gagged. Yeah, better did.
- 44:12Ah, the evil Raft warriors want to kill the Meep.
- 44:17This would be better if there was a flashback to the meeps
- 44:21planet or even like an animation or something like that.
- 44:23Just so. Even a comic strip would have
- 44:27been a nice touch, Actually, yeah, we'd have seen the Black
- 44:30Sun and all the meeps. You know what's embarrassing?
- 44:32I had a bit of a Catherine Tate moment watching this because I
- 44:36thought the Ralph Warriors was CGI.
- 44:37And then I watched the, you know, what's it called?
- 44:39The documentary thing afterwards, All their costumes,
- 44:42OK. See.
- 44:45Was convinced, yes. See, that's where all the money
- 44:48is, not in the car park on the Rafares.
- 44:51Bring him back, that's what I say.
- 44:53I do quite like the fact that they've got awfully nice voices.
- 44:55I do. I think that's a great touch.
- 44:57Yes, Homo Aqua versus Rafa is please.
- 45:04They look terrible, those movies.
- 45:06Hey, you think? I think they look brilliant.
- 45:08Are you mad? You are insane it.
- 45:12Looks so much better than those. It's the one thing that legends
- 45:15of the Sea Devils got better. They just look like a human with
- 45:19face paint on. Now you're talking about salt,
- 45:22aren't you? No, I'm talking and I'm talking
- 45:24about the actual Sea Devil. Design.
- 45:25Oh, I like the actual Sea Devils.
- 45:27Yeah, but you can't call them that anymore.
- 45:30Oh yes, sorry. I can.
- 45:32Oh my God fellas, the Meep is evil all along.
- 45:36I would have guessed it and it's such a basic bitch plot twist
- 45:39and I know we all know it's coming, but everybody watching
- 45:42knows it's coming. It's just too obvious.
- 45:44But I do think, I do think the focus is more theory tells us
- 45:49back, Catherine takes back. You just need this little plot.
- 45:52It is possible to do that and have a good plot.
- 45:56But that's true. We'll see.
- 45:57There's never just that on season.
- 45:58Nope, it's not saying it's right.
- 45:59Wrong. I think I prefer it with the
- 46:01adipose where they're inadvertently murdering a load
- 46:04of people when they turn into little fat creatures, you know?
- 46:06And so it's horrific what happens, but they're so cute you
- 46:09don't really mind. Whereas with the Meep, you're
- 46:12right, it's a bit obvious. I don't know.
- 46:18I just like it. I'm not saying I'm not saying
- 46:22it's, I just like it. Just like it.
- 46:27Well, that's right, you could like it.
- 46:31Oh, he does look like an evil motherfucker now though, don't
- 46:33he? Oh dear.
- 46:39You know what's very funny is they try and do scale in a
- 46:41minute. You know, when he tries to have
- 46:42all the lava coming out all over London and things like that.
- 46:45And that's the scale of this one.
- 46:48London is under threat again. That is my biggest issue with
- 46:52the episode, is the road knitting itself back together.
- 46:55But anyway, we'll get there, Mike Smith, we'll get there.
- 47:02Oh, I love the fact that Donna, you know, we're following on
- 47:05from the End of Time and she won all that money, didn't she, On
- 47:07the triple rollover scratch card or whatever.
- 47:10She had the lottery ticket and then she gave it all away but
- 47:13just bought the house. I think that's what I'd like to
- 47:16do. I wouldn't upkeep it all.
- 47:20Oh, you're a selfish cunt, that's why.
- 47:22But I'd give some of it to charity, you know?
- 47:24Yeah, but it's not really her, is it?
- 47:26It's like the Doctor, Donna. I'd give a little bit to film is
- 47:30fabulous and that's it. Maybe try and buy out Philip
- 47:38Morris's lockup and Wigan from him?
- 47:41There's some juicy stuff there, Dylan.
- 47:43You know, now I don't feel like Rose feels that bothered that
- 47:48she's just been in a life or death situation.
- 47:50She looks a bit bored by the affair.
- 47:52I mean, she's had a hard life. So you know, this is just.
- 47:56Again, it's got nothing to do us that's she this.
- 48:00Scene is all about Donna. Yeah.
- 48:04Yeah, it is. It is really odd because please
- 48:06go back and watch Rose Smith and Jones and Partners in Crime.
- 48:10Both stories are all about their companions.
- 48:12I know she's not a companion, but she's an end to this.
- 48:15But. Joe they're not.
- 48:17He's not setting off a series though, is it?
- 48:19It'd be so weird that. She's the one person that
- 48:23remains with the show. Yeah, and we are setting up a
- 48:27series here because we get mentions of the boss who
- 48:29obviously. Oh yeah, who was that again?
- 48:33It. Was bloody good that episode on
- 48:34it do. We have other mentions of the
- 48:38boss. I think the devil's caught it,
- 48:40didn't it? Maybe no Rogue mentions him.
- 48:44And of course, Anita. From Joy to the World.
- 48:47Oh God, Jesus, things did get worse.
- 48:50Yeah, she says it in the Reality War on the way out, says the
- 48:53boss says hello. He says, oh, that's one for the
- 48:57future. I try and think kindly on RTD 2
- 49:00and then people start naming episodes like you did there and
- 49:02I just can't be nice. Well I again I like it, but I
- 49:06remember watching season 1 in a day and Christ you come out of
- 49:10that hating everyone involved in it.
- 49:13Do you remember Rose Noble got 6 cherry pick efforts when Sutek
- 49:16was attacking? She was there with the iPad,
- 49:18just pushing but. Yes, and Morris, the 13 year old
- 49:22shooting, he's got his machine gun segue.
- 49:26And fucking blinks. Just hightails it out of there
- 49:28through the floor. The CG on the CG on this meep is
- 49:34atrocious. Why are we doing a fire attack
- 49:38without great fun with that? Right, the only one that likes
- 49:41the blinks. But I like you everyone,
- 49:45everyone can't stand. You you know, you know why
- 49:47people don't like the blinks? Because it's Nick Briggs.
- 49:49Otherwise nobody would give a shit.
- 49:51I can't believe they didn't put Sharon from Black Castle in
- 49:55this. No, you know, she should have
- 49:57made a cameo at least. It's that fucking Meep again, is
- 50:01it? Well, I can tell you how to deal
- 50:03with him. Do you remember that panel where
- 50:05she goes? I hate you.
- 50:07You're a bad Meep in the comic. Oh for God's sake, I hate all of
- 50:13this. I hate all of this with the
- 50:16wheelchair, with the bullets on it.
- 50:17And especially in the Reality War, where she leaves the
- 50:20flaming tracks behind. She's a member of a military
- 50:24organization. Just give her a fucking gun like
- 50:26everybody else. This is not how we do pro
- 50:29disability Doctor Who just make her competent.
- 50:34I mean, she's got. Rockets in the.
- 50:40Yeah, she's got fucking rockets. David Tennant knows how to jump
- 50:44into a hole. Pretty cool though.
- 50:46I'm getting exhausted. All this laughing, do you know
- 50:51it's, it's laughing for bad reasons.
- 50:53It's the trouble. Here we go.
- 50:56Donna is going to stay with the Doctor.
- 50:58Oh, I do like that scene where where she says I'm going to
- 51:02sacrifice myself for my daughter.
- 51:03That's nice. That's a very honest thing that
- 51:06a parent might do. Yeah.
- 51:08What's the weird sort of words that he says to her when he sort
- 51:12of unlocks? Oh, I really like.
- 51:13That, that, that's the code. I like that.
- 51:15I don't like all the bollocks that comes after it.
- 51:19So OK, we've we've got this spaceship.
- 51:21Look at this, look at this. It's so cheap.
- 51:24Look at it. The Doctor.
- 51:26Well, it is, and it there's not, there's no need for it.
- 51:29What purpose does that glass door serve apart from to stop,
- 51:34you know, to to? It's just an absolute
- 51:37ridiculous. Have you seen Battlefield when
- 51:39ice got beyond that glass? Door, we're not talking about
- 51:42that. But at this point it's just like
- 51:44how do I bring Donna back? And I also do think this
- 51:47cheapens. I don't think it's a big enough
- 51:49event to warrant bringing Donna back.
- 51:53I think the specials as a whole is a big enough event warrants.
- 51:56But, but I I don't think it should have happened here.
- 51:59I think she should have got it. Something should have happened
- 52:01in Wild Blue Yonder and made it more exciting.
- 52:03But I like the way Tennant climbs around this spaceship, by
- 52:05the way. No, I think I think that would
- 52:07have dragged it on too long. I think by the end of this
- 52:09episode you need to have them back together.
- 52:11It makes the end of the stolen Earth just feel like.
- 52:15Come on, I wouldn't lose the bit where she beats up those dollies
- 52:18in the giggle for anything. A little bit like it's always
- 52:22going to do that a little bit. But I think because there's 15
- 52:25years of of non doctor life like that, it's all right.
- 52:31So what is the purpose of the glass door?
- 52:34To start to keep them apart so that he has to, he's forced to
- 52:37bring it back. It's it's.
- 52:38It's not an explained part. Does one part of the ship get
- 52:41jettisoned or something and they stay safe behind the other part?
- 52:44No. Because if they could stay safe
- 52:46behind glass, the whole thing could be made of glass, wouldn't
- 52:48it? But this is what they did
- 52:49brilliantly in Series 4 is where you give them emotional
- 52:52material, where they show what they mean to each other.
- 52:55And this is what Tenant and Tate do is it's great stuff.
- 52:58I think the acting. Yes, effects of the ground
- 53:01splitting up looks great. As we said, it's shit that it
- 53:03just all magically sews back. Together at the end, but I do
- 53:05it. Yeah, but as you see, no, Dylan,
- 53:08I think it looks great. No, I think this looks terrible.
- 53:11Wow. Interesting.
- 53:13Look at this. It just looks like an added on
- 53:15effect. I know it is an added on effect
- 53:17but that fudge. Fudge at the window.
- 53:20Fudge at the window. Fudge at the.
- 53:22Window. Oh, I could murder some fudge
- 53:23right now. And I don't mean the child, all
- 53:25right? This bit here where the Doctor
- 53:31realises he's got to do it is lovely.
- 53:32It's. Yeah, it's beautiful.
- 53:34And then he starts reeling off those words that are obviously
- 53:37the code words to bring it back and.
- 53:39This is where you see how he's changed a bit as an actor.
- 53:42I think in this scene he he underplays some of it and it's
- 53:44more moving for it. He's got a thing.
- 53:48What's going on? Like two hours ago he was with
- 53:51Tegan and Ace. Every time that Catherine Tate,
- 53:54you see the stairs she's given him right now.
- 53:56She gave him that stare in every other episode in series 4.
- 53:59It always breaks my heart. Yeah.
- 54:03I mean, I think it's quite easy to throw around the like, these
- 54:07are amazing actors. These are amazing performances.
- 54:10These two are these two. Magic they are.
- 54:13Also for me this episode doesn't have anything else apart from
- 54:16these two and Sylvia. And I think when you see, you
- 54:19know. As it might be enough, you know.
- 54:22I like shitty guy or I like Millie Gibson, but you compare
- 54:25it to this and these are on another level.
- 54:28The joy of Wild Blue Yonder, and I keep going on about it, is
- 54:31that it's just the two of them, right?
- 54:33And you just get to see the two of them act for an hour.
- 54:36Yeah, and it's brilliant for that.
- 54:38I just I have problems with the execution of the episode.
- 54:41It's boring. A properly creeps me out in that
- 54:44David Tennant. Come on, just go and do it
- 54:49please. I need to save my boring
- 54:51daughter. When you realise what these
- 54:53these code words are doing, oh it's just great.
- 54:56What does it mean, Adente? It doesn't matter, it's just a
- 54:59code isn't. It fingerprint.
- 55:01It's a combination of words, like what, 3 words that you get
- 55:04to find a location that's unique that no one's ever going to say
- 55:07to her, but it's to unlock it. I can actually go with it, it
- 55:10reminds. Me of that passcode in the
- 55:12doctor's wife, you know what was it, Petacore, this, that and the
- 55:16other. In in Doctor Who Magazine.
- 55:18I mean Musty Doses was dropping these every every month in his
- 55:22column. Oh, was he?
- 55:24Yeah, we knew the code well in advance.
- 55:26Do you know, I think he did have good intentions going into this
- 55:29new era. It's not his fault that he hired
- 55:32an accident systematically ruined the.
- 55:34Entire show, Yeah, there's absolutely loads of problems
- 55:36with it, wasn't it? Yeah, I also just think he was
- 55:38the wrong choice, I think. He oh, look at this Dylan.
- 55:41That looks terrible that road collapse in there.
- 55:44I'll. Tell you what looks terrible?
- 55:45That fucking regeneration as well.
- 55:49I think I mean regeneration just haven't looked good for a long
- 55:53long time. Jodie on Turtle Door shooting
- 55:57out those rainbow beams. Fabulous, no?
- 56:00We're about to do this thing where they just talk a load of
- 56:03absolute generic sci-fi bollocks.
- 56:05That's the most unbelievable dialogue.
- 56:07I hate this. Yeah, it didn't quite Does the
- 56:10techno Babble well, doesn't he? He hasn't got Moffett's gift for
- 56:13techno. Like, this is about as
- 56:16embarrassing as Doctor. Moffett's gift.
- 56:19I've just said something nice about Steven Moffett.
- 56:21No, Moffett had that Douglas Adams way of making techno
- 56:24Babble really fun and witty. Whereas, you know, do you
- 56:27remember Chinese end all that stuff about the the typing and
- 56:31dabros going around the circles. He's doing it again here, and to
- 56:34me it sounds like a child's written it.
- 56:36It's like. Overstep the umbilical theme,
- 56:39vindicate the cyber Lion, and roast the hyperfit.
- 56:42You know, it really annoys me in Journey's End, but it's weird
- 56:44how it sounds so much better there.
- 56:47Well, channel up the booster drive, then.
- 56:49Luke, let's go. It's.
- 56:52Yeah. Maybe it's just because they're
- 56:56back. The Doctor and Donna are back.
- 56:58You know It's a triumphant moment.
- 57:01Yeah, do something better then, literally.
- 57:06What's up Joe? What's been the best?
- 57:08What the best 55 seconds of your life?
- 57:11Wow, when the Guardians of the Edge in the power of the Doctor.
- 57:19Oh, not a moment with your wife to be Jesus Christ.
- 57:23I see her all the time. Luke.
- 57:27Might have something to do with Edge as well.
- 57:33Mine was on the edge of her bed in a Doctor Who convention with
- 57:35Mark. Very good.
- 57:38Thank you. So mine involved pensioners,
- 57:41yours involved Mark. And I was just on my own, making
- 57:44sweet love to myself, watching the.
- 57:47Star beats. Oh dear.
- 57:53So she's not going to die. Hold on.
- 57:55But this this bit's still quite lovely.
- 57:59What should Peter Capaldi break out of that confession dial?
- 58:03That was probably the closest I felt to an orgasm without having
- 58:07an orgasm. That was a phenomenal moment.
- 58:10That's the closest I felt to narcolepsy, if I'm honest.
- 58:13Yeah. There's certain moments in
- 58:15Doctor Who that can just make you cub unassisted.
- 58:20The Ruston Warrior robot is one of them.
- 58:24He feels out that stocking. Oh dear.
- 58:28Do what you want. The ships not going anywhere.
- 58:30You were beaten. Oh, no.
- 58:32This is the bit where Rose comes in now, Dylan.
- 58:35God. Now, what is your big objection
- 58:37to all of this? We've been told in the press
- 58:41release, in the script that Rose is a woman, that she's a trans
- 58:44woman and at no point, as she said she's non binary, which is
- 58:49different to being trans. And the whole plot revolves
- 58:52around her being non binary. At which point her and her
- 58:55mother turned to a character that's previously a few hours
- 58:59ago been a woman and said that a male presenting Time Lord
- 59:02wouldn't understand. That is or.
- 59:05That line is very odd. I think the non binariness and
- 59:08the male presenting stuff to somebody who has just changed
- 59:10gender is really uncomfortable. Can't you be a non binary trans?
- 59:14Educate me here. You absolutely can, but there is
- 59:18nothing in this script or indeed the press that went around it
- 59:22that was like, we've got a young trans woman, which is a very
- 59:25positive bit of representation. I think it's very regressive to
- 59:28then accidentally describe them as non binary.
- 59:31They built the character up as non binary.
- 59:32At the start it would have been fine, but she is a she her as
- 59:37far as the script is concerned. What do you think?
- 59:39Is is championing things too far?
- 59:42No, I think it's. No, it's getting completely.
- 59:44Wrong. He doesn't understand what he's
- 59:46trying to say here. I don't think he understand.
- 59:47Surely Run Davis understands this stuff.
- 59:51I mean, you would think, but I think this is this is one of
- 59:54those episodes that in years to come or be a bit like talents of
- 59:58Wayne Chai Yang, where there's a whole generation of people that
- 1:00:00find it deeply problematic. And I think Russell, in trying
- 1:00:03to champion someone and do a positive thing, has actually
- 1:00:07made something that is quite transphobic.
- 1:00:09But if there's any trans people listening and disagree with me
- 1:00:12because fundamentally I agree that having the character there
- 1:00:16is a positive move. I don't think he's deliberately
- 1:00:19trying to be transphobic, I think his his intentions are
- 1:00:23honourable, even if he made a mistake.
- 1:00:25No. But that, that is true.
- 1:00:28But when you're trying to make those intentions and when you
- 1:00:32are being so militant about it in the press, which let's face
- 1:00:34it, Russell doesn't take any shit on these sorts of things,
- 1:00:37you need to be right. You need to get your shit
- 1:00:39together and you need to be right.
- 1:00:40And I just don't think it works. I do remember seeing the press
- 1:00:44after this and the the most negative thing was it wasn't
- 1:00:48actually that. It was the whole, just the whole
- 1:00:50trans thing, people really, you know, all the wrong people took
- 1:00:55against that representation in this.
- 1:00:57And that's really sad because the representation is important.
- 1:01:00It's just the conclusion that I feel is flawed.
- 1:01:04I think it's quite a funny moment though, like it does make
- 1:01:07me sort of smile with the binary, non binary thing.
- 1:01:10I think it's quite a funny call back and it does sort of like
- 1:01:16just sort of get around this impossible problem of of the
- 1:01:21plot. But again, it's a it's a cheap
- 1:01:23joke, isn't it? And one that's made at the
- 1:01:25expense of a trans. It's a, it's a cheap reference.
- 1:01:28I don't think it's made at the expense.
- 1:01:30I mean, I just I think I was confused on broadcast I think.
- 1:01:34The fact that all three of us have taken something different
- 1:01:36from this means it's not very clear.
- 1:01:39And I agree, the bit I didn't like a broadcast was the the
- 1:01:43attack of the doctor for absolutely.
- 1:01:45No. It comes out of no.
- 1:01:48I was a hot Northern laughs just yesterday.
- 1:01:51You know, we know everything and you know nothing.
- 1:01:58What a shame you're not a woman anymore.
- 1:01:59Yeah, I hate all of that. Yeah, I hate.
- 1:02:02Well, I mean, I hated it in Hell Bent as well.
- 1:02:04And that person regenerated into a woman and basically started
- 1:02:08slagging off all the men in the room.
- 1:02:10I'm like Moffett and. So basic, there's just nothing
- 1:02:14to it whatsoever. It's very GCSE drama, you know?
- 1:02:18The IT would never be that obvious, you know, No.
- 1:02:21He fucking was. He's the only one that doesn't
- 1:02:23do it. I think he's the only person
- 1:02:25that does politics well and Doctor Who.
- 1:02:27He just basically forgets the Doctor's a woman for most of the
- 1:02:30era. It doesn't, yeah.
- 1:02:32It just doesn't look at it. After all these years, I'm
- 1:02:38finally good. That's a good statement.
- 1:02:40I'm finally gay. That's.
- 1:02:42What? It's what the Star Beast is
- 1:02:43saying. It's saying Doctor Who it's
- 1:02:46back, but it's not, is it? Yeah.
- 1:02:49But to me, it felt like it was. And I'm sure to many other
- 1:02:53people that did feel like it was.
- 1:02:54But that's why you you don't like it and I do.
- 1:02:57I think more than the politicking, I just thought the
- 1:03:00energy and the what felt like spectacle of it, That's what it
- 1:03:04felt like. Oh, yeah, you know, we're, we're
- 1:03:06we're back. You know, we're sort of running
- 1:03:08again. Yeah.
- 1:03:09And I loved the Chibnu era, but it is a shift.
- 1:03:13Yeah, yeah, yeah. But you've got, you've got.
- 1:03:16It's Saturday night telly again that that, that's for certain.
- 1:03:18But shouldn't Doctor Who B Saturday night telly?
- 1:03:21No, it was on Wednesday when I was a kid.
- 1:03:25You're so old, Jesus. But you've got the Doctor
- 1:03:29getting his Davidson identity back.
- 1:03:31You've got Donna getting her identity back.
- 1:03:33You got Rose accepting her identity.
- 1:03:36She's already accepted she's she's transitioned.
- 1:03:40But no, I mean but now she's non binary dealers.
- 1:03:46This bit in a minute right now. I mean, I don't like this
- 1:03:49console room. It's far too big and empty.
- 1:03:52I I think they've gone for a spectacle and it's just like a
- 1:03:55bare room. It's very strange.
- 1:03:57And I find the bit where she throws the coffee so badly
- 1:04:01directed. It's so obvious, isn't it?
- 1:04:05It's. Great, I love her genius.
- 1:04:07Slapstick. The way it happens is so bad.
- 1:04:10Genius slapstick. And also, this is a TARDIS that
- 1:04:14could could have been flooded under the Thames, but Oh no, of
- 1:04:17course yeah, the thing that fucks it up is a cup of coffee
- 1:04:20and the way she fucking drops like.
- 1:04:22It's brand new you. Know what he's doing there?
- 1:04:25You could just see in the door and everyone's going oh, oh,
- 1:04:27let's see in, let's see in. Yeah, you could just see in the
- 1:04:29crack before you went in. I don't.
- 1:04:34No, I agree. Like it is too big.
- 1:04:37You know, it's too big after the episodes we've seen of it.
- 1:04:39But I absolutely loved it. He just gets to run around it.
- 1:04:42Yeah. The only thing that really
- 1:04:44worked for me was when him and Millie went off in the Devil's
- 1:04:46Cord, dancing away to get their costumes and then came back.
- 1:04:50That was the only use of that space that I thought was.
- 1:04:52That was the last time we've seen them together before Pirate
- 1:04:55Death, wasn't it? I think so.
- 1:04:57I like. I like when it's, I like what
- 1:05:00they so they brought the lights down now and I think it looks
- 1:05:02better. I like the use of colour that
- 1:05:03they do with it, but when it's actually white.
- 1:05:06And I always thought, oh we used to love the white console rooms
- 1:05:09but for some reason it doesn't work here.
- 1:05:10I mean when the lights got start sort of flickering like that, it
- 1:05:14just looks like a cheap gay disco.
- 1:05:16It looked. Yeah, it does, though it looks
- 1:05:18like a disco. It needs more.
- 1:05:21He just go. Oh God, that Capaldi one.
- 1:05:23It felt lived in. It felt so lived.
- 1:05:25In Do you remember that really Moody lighting at the end of
- 1:05:27Lucky Day in the confrontation at the time?
- 1:05:30Now that's how I wish it was. Well, that's like, yeah, like
- 1:05:32battlefield, isn't it? It's the two mentions tonight.
- 1:05:37No battlefield. But Moffett always said that
- 1:05:40line about he's not, you know, he's not a pilot that goes
- 1:05:43around the universe. It's a it's a man that lives in
- 1:05:45his time machine, not someone that uses when he lives in it.
- 1:05:47And was Capaldi. Capaldi is the is the one Doctor
- 1:05:51you feel like. Yeah, he lives in there.
- 1:05:53So are they sort of going off to get her adventure in again now
- 1:05:56forever, or is it just one trip she.
- 1:05:58Said one trip, didn't she? Yeah, there's a there's a few
- 1:06:02DWM comic strips that happen between here.
- 1:06:05I just hate all of this biscuit dispensers and mustard and
- 1:06:09tomato sauce and teas coming out of the console.
- 1:06:13I. Bet you liked it when there's
- 1:06:14acoustic cream though. No, no, even that was annoying.
- 1:06:19I like the ketchup and must. Yeah, I bet you do.
- 1:06:21They're. Supposed to just be going to see
- 1:06:22Wilf, aren't they? That's.
- 1:06:25That's the oh look, watch it now.
- 1:06:27Was your friends that took coffee.
- 1:06:29Look one last. Genius slapstick.
- 1:06:33Do you know what The thing is as well?
- 1:06:35There's not enough like pressy buttons or flashy bits on the
- 1:06:38console. Doesn't look like as much to
- 1:06:39press or. He looks great in that
- 1:06:42waistcoat. I love that look and look at
- 1:06:46that, that sort of great eye as well.
- 1:06:48He looks. He just gives off, Doctor
- 1:06:50doesn't. He, yeah, he does he like more
- 1:06:53so now I think, yes, there's a maturity to him now.
- 1:06:57I mean, you go and watch him in School Reunion, it looks like a
- 1:06:59bloody nipper, don't it? Well, I look forward to seeing
- 1:07:02him again in Christmas 20. 20 7 and at this.
- 1:07:07Rate on the bus 27 as well. David Tennant versus the Boss
- 1:07:11and the Homo Aqua. Oh look, even the line.
- 1:07:13What could possibly go wrong? Froze the coffee?
- 1:07:17Come on. Hilarious.
- 1:07:18Hello. Were you laughing when you first
- 1:07:21watched it? Yes, loving it.
- 1:07:23Oh no, it's all gone wrong. Oh God.
- 1:07:26Sylvia say going. Oh, no, no.
- 1:07:29And this materialization affair looks terrible as well.
- 1:07:31I don't know what they were thinking.
- 1:07:35Well, it wasn't made in a rush. This was it.
- 1:07:37That mean we gave it a bit of consideration.
- 1:07:39I mean this. The filmed it like 2 years
- 1:07:41before didn't he? And if anything, this Doctor Who
- 1:07:44story has had the most amount of prep and lead up time since
- 1:07:49Rose. Actually, it's only when you see
- 1:07:51that real physical fire there that you realise just how fake
- 1:07:54all the fires look so far in this episode.
- 1:07:58I can't be honest, I did feel like it came out longer than two
- 1:08:03years ago. Like what?
- 1:08:06Watching along. Two years.
- 1:08:07They felt older than 2023. Luke, did you know that there
- 1:08:11was a series of Doctor Who broadcast earlier this year?
- 1:08:15Yeah, it's nuts, isn't it? We've had this year is like the
- 1:08:18most doctor we've ever had, you know what?
- 1:08:21In like 10 years. It's because we've sort of all
- 1:08:23given up on it, that's why. Well, yeah, as Dylan sort of
- 1:08:26said, we got everybody like David Tennant back in, but not
- 1:08:30kids. And by now there's just a the
- 1:08:34people that seriously have no lives left.
- 1:08:36I've gotta slow you to do. You do you remember when the
- 1:08:39trailer came out and they did the three titles and just a
- 1:08:42couple of clips for all three of these specials, right yeah and
- 1:08:45my. Your right wasn't.
- 1:08:47It we were in London in that Doctor Who escape room.
- 1:08:50It's in one of those boom battle bars.
- 1:08:52And we were there and I couldn't hear it 'cause it was so fucking
- 1:08:55loud in there. And the trailer came on.
- 1:08:57I was just watching the pictures going oh, and then the titles
- 1:09:00were coming up and I was like, fuck the escape room.
- 1:09:02Oh my God. Like.
- 1:09:04Yeah, I mean, when the when the actual 60th trailer dropped and
- 1:09:08said it was in the helicopter and everything, it was like, Oh
- 1:09:11my God. We're doing Marvel, baby.
- 1:09:15Well, fellas, I mean, Dylan, this may be tricky for you, but
- 1:09:19we've got to do our free fabulous things to recommend the
- 1:09:22Star Beast to everybody. I feel like we should start with
- 1:09:25Luke, the most positive of all, then I'll go next.
- 1:09:27And then Dylan, you take up the rear.
- 1:09:32Sonic screwjaver force fields and and screens all the new
- 1:09:36Sonic screwdriver bits that we never see again.
- 1:09:40Absolutely great. Cool.
- 1:09:43I'd love any episode of Doctor Who that they were in.
- 1:09:46For me, it, my first one is going to be that whole sequence
- 1:09:51where the camera shoots down the road, over the cars flying, raft
- 1:09:56warriors flying, zooming into the bloody loft hatches as the
- 1:10:00Meeps crawling, all of that stuff.
- 1:10:02It's just that's, that's Russell.
- 1:10:04That's what Russell does really, really well.
- 1:10:06That's the the mad energy of Partners in Crime and Voyage of
- 1:10:10the Damned and all of that that's encapsulated there in
- 1:10:14those sort of two or three minutes.
- 1:10:18I mean, this is an obvious one, but it's the best thing about
- 1:10:21it, and it's David Tennant and Catherine Tate being back.
- 1:10:23You having both of them, Dylan. Yeah, I'm having both of them.
- 1:10:26I'm. I'm taking them both.
- 1:10:28And it's wonderful to have that duo back and to see the charisma
- 1:10:32and charm and warmth and care and love that's between them two
- 1:10:36and to, you know, just have an actor acting like the Doctor,
- 1:10:39which we won't see again after this trilogy.
- 1:10:43Luke. That joy you get when you first
- 1:10:49see a new TARDIS and it feels like you get the cherry on top
- 1:10:53because the Doctor actually runs around it like he's a big kid,
- 1:10:56which is exactly what you'd want to do.
- 1:10:59My second one is going to be the opening exposition sequence.
- 1:11:03Hear me out, Hear me out. Because finally we've got an
- 1:11:07exposition sequence worse than the Five minute PowerPoint in
- 1:11:11the Timeless Children that we can all point out. 5 minutes
- 1:11:13that. Is the worst in Doctor Who?
- 1:11:21The fact that the Wrath Warriors and Beat the Maple were put on
- 1:11:23television in the year of 2023. Nobody in their wildest dreams
- 1:11:28at any point in the show's history ever thought something
- 1:11:31like that would happen. And even though I don't like it,
- 1:11:33and I think it makes the show look a bit silly and a bit
- 1:11:36cheap, it's also fucking brilliant.
- 1:11:40Well, third, and most importantly, would be making
- 1:11:44Fudge actually likable. It is seen in A and a reaction
- 1:11:50shot. Go fudge.
- 1:11:53My last one is a really tiny thing, but I just love it.
- 1:11:56I didn't mention it in the episode, you know, during the
- 1:11:59sort of dismal climax where Rose is reaching conclusions about
- 1:12:03herself, it cuts back to her little workshop and you see all
- 1:12:07the toys of Carvin, Esther, the Ood.
- 1:12:10That's crap. I love them.
- 1:12:12I love this is. I want every single one of them.
- 1:12:16It does baffle me that they didn't market the MEAP.
- 1:12:18What happened there? There was no market for toys
- 1:12:21like that because the action figure market has just changed
- 1:12:24over the years as a collector's market.
- 1:12:27Oh, that's so sad. And kids aren't interested in
- 1:12:30Doctor Who or action figures. I mean, it was so rampant, the
- 1:12:34action figure market. We had Grandma Donnelly one time
- 1:12:37and destroyed Cassandra. I think of the choice we could
- 1:12:41have had and. This is.
- 1:12:42Interesting too. This isn't Doctor, just Doctor
- 1:12:46Who. It's largely across all things
- 1:12:47that like if you go into a toy shop now you will see action
- 1:12:51figures but there's just not as many as they used to be.
- 1:12:53And no, there was no market for a fluffy beat the me despite.
- 1:12:59Forbidden Planet doing now? It's all manga.
- 1:13:02Yeah, that's what's crazy at the moment.
- 1:13:03But that but Forbidden Planet is a specialist shop for a
- 1:13:07specialist audience. Can I just ask you both before
- 1:13:10Dylan chooses his third fabulous thing?
- 1:13:12You know what would be your like most obscure destroyed destroyed
- 1:13:15Cassandra style action figure for RTD 2?
- 1:13:19Oh oh, a great question. I don't know.
- 1:13:24Dylan's barely watched it. Actually I'm having a bit of
- 1:13:31trouble now. I mean.
- 1:13:34There'd be a Suitex dog, wouldn't there?
- 1:13:36You know, with the lead all all. Those memorable characters.
- 1:13:41You bitch. Oh, no.
- 1:13:43We have the kid in his scooter. What's his name?
- 1:13:46The unit guy. Bob Morris.
- 1:13:49You can ride him around in his scooter.
- 1:13:52The woman with the spoon with it with it.
- 1:13:54Like an actual spoon in the box as well.
- 1:13:56Like that? I only want a Shirley toy if it
- 1:14:00comes with real bazookas and flaming tracks.
- 1:14:06About all nine space babies, you know, like when they released,
- 1:14:09when they when they released the 25 cyber mats in a box.
- 1:14:13Yes, finally, a toy I can put in the microwave and blow up a load
- 1:14:18of kids. Marvellous.
- 1:14:19Well, Dylan, what's your last thing to recommend this
- 1:14:23treasurable episode? For the first 40 minutes, the
- 1:14:27representation of a trans woman of real life trans issues of
- 1:14:35I've forgotten the character's name, but Ruth Madeley isn't it
- 1:14:38and. Shirley.
- 1:14:39Shirley is a wheelchair user. Like I think it's really
- 1:14:43positive. I think it goes very skewer
- 1:14:45towards the end. But that that that first bit is
- 1:14:49what I was expecting from Rosa Duty Avis, where it's a little
- 1:14:51bit of a plot. There's a little some little
- 1:14:53mentions, but ultimately it's about people just playing their
- 1:14:57parts and trying to do it well. And then I think it just gives
- 1:15:01it the the understanding of the politics perhaps goes a little
- 1:15:05skew if. The politics in RTU swings in
- 1:15:09both directions, doesn't it? I think, I mean, I personally
- 1:15:12think the invisible racism angle in Don Bubble is genius.
- 1:15:18Like when do you figure out that these are microaggressions?
- 1:15:21But I also think the romance in is the most boring gay robots
- 1:15:26I've ever seen in my entire life.
- 1:15:28So like, sometimes they get it right and sometimes they get it
- 1:15:31really wrong. I prefer the other way around.
- 1:15:35Like I can't stand dumb bubble. I just think it's so and I think
- 1:15:39that's another one that I think is going to be a very
- 1:15:41cancellable in the future, but there we go.
- 1:15:45Oh. What a sad note to enter on.
- 1:15:48P as an action figure could get Doctor P.
- 1:15:52Who's doctor? Yeah, he's someone that tells
- 1:15:54you when you have a wee wee. It's not Doctor Screw.
- 1:15:57Don't worry, I'm. Not interested then.
- 1:15:59Yeah, I can't remember any characters from the second year,
- 1:16:03do you know? No, literally got Sasha 55.
- 1:16:08Yeah, that little thing that goes around hoovering up sperms,
- 1:16:11what's that called? What?
- 1:16:13Show is this. That's the profile revolution.
- 1:16:16It's. A sperm Hoover and grow.
- 1:16:18Not in the Rainbow Revolution. Well, fellows, since, you know,
- 1:16:21let's be honest, we've put off doing terror of the All in so
- 1:16:25long now. I don't think it's ever going to
- 1:16:27happen. So where are we going next?
- 1:16:31Are we going to do space babies? Please.
- 1:16:37I've been more up for Empire of Death to be honest.
- 1:16:40Oh, can we do both Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death
- 1:16:43A2 parter? Oh my God, I thought I'd watch
- 1:16:47those again. Dylan it.
- 1:16:49Wouldn't be the first time you and me have been dogging
- 1:16:51together. Are you up for it?
- 1:16:56I was born ready. The worst thing about it?
- 1:17:00I swore after that series I wouldn't watch it again.
- 1:17:03Then I watched it all again for a hamster that I didn't end up
- 1:17:06being on. And now I'm gonna have to sit
- 1:17:09through that fucking. Finale.
- 1:17:10Oh yeah, suppose we sorted on Hamster.
- 1:17:12Maybe we should do the robot revolution because we hate it.
- 1:17:15It would be amazing if Dylan somehow loves it.
- 1:17:19So yeah, I've it is one of the five episodes I've never seen.
- 1:17:23Well, Dylan, you've got a choice of three here.
- 1:17:25Free Gems, Space Babies, Empire of Death, or The Robot
- 1:17:28Revolution. Take your pick.
- 1:17:32Let's let's go for the robot revolution.
- 1:17:35I'm. Gonna watch it.
- 1:17:37I'm gonna watch it before the episode.
- 1:17:39But that is also one that I watched and was like, don't
- 1:17:42think I'm ever gonna watch that again.
- 1:17:43So it will give me a reason to to go back.
- 1:17:45Imagine if now it's over. I was just like robot
- 1:17:48revolutions, really. I doubt it very much.
- 1:17:54I think that. Woman that we're supposed to
- 1:17:56care about in that. Low 55.
- 1:17:59Asha 55 What the fuck was that all about?
- 1:18:02Jesus. Oh wait, now I think it was
- 1:18:04Belinda. Spoilers, Spoilers.
- 1:18:06Oh, sorry, yes. How do we end this in a sort of
- 1:18:09style Beastie sort of a way? I mean, maybe I should just
- 1:18:12swear lots and go. That was fucking shit.
- 1:18:15Oh, you've been quite restrained.
- 1:18:16Oh no, wait, Dylan, will you please actually just tell the
- 1:18:18hamster audience what we're actually genuinely all coming
- 1:18:22together for? On Too Hot for TV Next.
- 1:18:25Well, actually, it's a Christmas Day surprise.
- 1:18:28How is it? No, it's.
- 1:18:30Fine on Christmas Day, after the two Hopper TV advent calendar
- 1:18:34has been finished, because there's been probably by that
- 1:18:38point the most successful Doctor Who spin off of all time.
- 1:18:41The war between the land and the sea, where UNIT fight the Sea
- 1:18:45Devils. We're going to listen to UNIT
- 1:18:48assembled where UNIT old and new members.
- 1:18:52Now put the stool down. Terry put it down.
- 1:18:55Terry and And what else are we doing?
- 1:18:59Luke Malloy. We're doing Doctor 10th
- 1:19:03Christmas surprise, the Mr. Men book.
- 1:19:06Yeah, how are those links? They're not.
- 1:19:09Wait and see, you're not. I'm guessing you've not seen the
- 1:19:13Homo akra in the Mr. Men book then?
- 1:19:15No. I haven't about as linked as
- 1:19:17Lust in space from flying into the moon.
- 1:19:19Hey, Dylan. Yeah, except longer.
- 1:19:24Well, fellas, thank you so much Dylan.
- 1:19:27I think we should say thank you especially to you for enduring
- 1:19:30this absolute nightmare one final time.
- 1:19:33I've got one more thing to say. Actually, it did make me go, oh,
- 1:19:37I do need to rewatch the rest of those specials as well, like
- 1:19:40because, because I did. I did enjoy Wild Blue Yonder and
- 1:19:43I did enjoy the giggle. I would like to do the giggle
- 1:19:46with you boys. I haven't done the commentary on
- 1:19:47the giggle. OK, well let's do a gatwa and
- 1:19:50then we'll do a giggle. OK, deal.
- 1:19:55Someone give us an outline please.
- 1:19:59Cheating with giraffes? Cut it there.
