- 0:00Speaker 1: May 29th, 1960, marked episode 425 of CBS Radio's Gunsmoke,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Bad Seed. On the trail toward Dodge, Marshal Matt Dillon
- 0:12Speaker 1: comes upon Trudy Trent, a hungry young runaway who says
- 0:16Speaker 1: she is escaping her father. Dillon takes her back to
- 0:20Speaker 1: the isolated Trent farm to learn what lies behind her flight,
- 0:23Speaker 1: but his decision soon carries the matter into Dodge. William
- 0:28Speaker 1: Conrad stars as Dylan, with Eve McVeigh as Trudy Trent,
- 0:32Speaker 1: Sam Edwards as Asa Trent, and the familiar voices of
- 0:36Speaker 1: Parley Bear, Howard McNair, and Georgia Ellis. Norman MacDonald wrote, produced,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and directed. Here is the original broadcast.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there's
- 0:59Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:02Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:05Speaker 2: gun smoke.

- 1:24Speaker 2: Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that
- 1:29Speaker 2: moved west with young America.
- 1:31Speaker 4: And the story of a man who moved with it.
- 1:34Speaker 4: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:38Speaker 4: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:42Speaker 4: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:47Speaker 4: And a little lonely. It had been a long, hard
- 1:58Speaker 4: ride to Fort Larner, and as it turned out, a
- 2:01Speaker 4: useless one. The prisoner Colonel Matthews had been holding for
- 2:04Speaker 4: me died before I could get there, so I spent
- 2:06Speaker 4: the night at the fort and then started back for
- 2:08Speaker 4: Dodge the next morning. The trip back was more pleasant.
- 2:12Speaker 4: A breeze from the Rockies swept across the high plains,
- 2:15Speaker 4: and it was cool for the first time in weeks.
- 2:18Speaker 4: And now camp for the night, just a day's ride
- 2:21Speaker 4: out of Dodge, I was looking forward to a bath
- 2:23Speaker 4: and a shave at Mr. Teeter's. I must have been
- 2:26Speaker 4: asleep for some time when a sound awakened me. Somebody
- 2:30Speaker 4: was standing just outside the circle, a light cast from
- 2:32Speaker 4: the dying fire. All right, hold it. Now you raise
- 2:39Speaker 4: your hands and you walk in here slow. Keep coming.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Right up to the fire. Now just stand it. Is
- 2:57Speaker 4: there anybody with you?
- 2:59Speaker 3: No.
- 3:00Speaker 5: I'm alone. Please, mister. I didn't mean any harm.
- 3:04Speaker 4: What are you doing here?
- 3:06Speaker 5: I was hungry. Thought maybe I could get some food.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Well, I might have shot you.
- 3:11Speaker 5: I'm awful hungry, mister. I've been sitting out there watching
- 3:14Speaker 5: your fire. I thought you were asleep.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Well, there's some side meat in that fry pan that's cold,
- 3:20Speaker 4: but you can have it if you want.
- 3:22Speaker 5: Thank you, mister.
- 3:28Speaker 4: You really were hungry, weren't you?
- 3:29Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 3:30Speaker 4: What did you eat last?
- 3:31Speaker 5: This morning. Just before I ran away.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Ran away? That's right.
- 3:38Speaker 5: I ran away from home.
- 3:39Speaker 4: I see. What's your name?
- 3:41Speaker 3: Trudy.
- 3:42Speaker 5: Trudy Trent.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Well, where is it, Trudy? Your home.
- 3:47Speaker 5: About 40 miles from here. What's your name?
- 3:52Speaker 4: Dylan, Matt Dylan. I'm the U.S. Marshal in Dodge.
- 3:54Speaker 6: Dodge?
- 3:55Speaker 5: That's right where I'm headed.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Now look, Trudy, Dodge is a long way from here.
- 4:00Speaker 4: A whole day's ride. Don't you think you'd better ride
- 4:02Speaker 4: back home tomorrow and think about this a little? Your
- 4:04Speaker 4: parents are going to be a little worried.
- 4:06Speaker 5: That's just me and Pa, Marshal. I sure ain't going
- 4:09Speaker 5: back to him.
- 4:09Speaker 4: He's probably out looking for you right now.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Pa?
- 4:13Speaker 5: He gets drunk almost every night.
- 4:15Speaker 7: Ain't likely he's out riding around on the prairie.
- 4:18Speaker 4: I see.
- 4:18Speaker 7: He's about the most terrible man ever lived, Marshal.
- 4:21Speaker 5: I could tell you things he done to me you
- 4:23Speaker 5: wouldn't believe. You want to hear?
- 4:24Speaker 4: Look, Trudy, a lot of kids don't always get along
- 4:27Speaker 4: with their pa.
- 4:28Speaker 5: I'm not a kid, Marshal. I'm old enough. I've been
- 4:32Speaker 5: old enough a long time.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Look, you're going back home in the morning. And I'm
- 4:36Speaker 4: going to ride with you to make sure you get there.
- 4:40Speaker 5: Don't you like me, Marshal?
- 4:44Speaker 4: Sure, I like you, Trudy, but you're still going home.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Don't make me go back there.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Please.
- 4:50Speaker 5: I'll do anything you want. But please don't make me
- 4:53Speaker 5: go back.
- 4:55Speaker 4: I got a blanket for you. You can sleep with
- 4:57Speaker 4: the fire.
- 4:58Speaker 5: Marshal, please.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Look, Trudy, whether you think so or not, you're still
- 5:02Speaker 4: just a kid and I'm taking you home in the morning.
- 5:05Speaker 3: The End.
- 5:13Speaker 4: In the morning, I awakened to a clear, warm day,
- 5:15Speaker 4: but the blanket I'd given to Trudy lay crumpled and
- 5:18Speaker 4: empty on the ground. For a minute, I thought she'd
- 5:20Speaker 4: run off. Then I heard splashing from the other side
- 5:23Speaker 4: of the willows. She was taking a swim. A few
- 5:26Speaker 4: minutes later, she was out, dressed, and we were breaking camp.
- 5:30Speaker 5: It was wonderful, Marshal. You should have tried it.
- 5:33Speaker 4: You ready to ride?
- 5:34Speaker 5: You're mad at me.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Trudy, you had something to eat, you got some sleep,
- 5:38Speaker 4: you had your swim, and now you're going home.
- 5:40Speaker 5: I changed my mind.
- 5:42Speaker 3: What?
- 5:42Speaker 5: I changed my mind. I'm not going home. I'm going
- 5:45Speaker 5: to Dodge with you.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Now, look, Trudy.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Can you think of one good reason for not taking
- 5:48Speaker 5: me to Dodge?
- 5:50Speaker 4: Dodge is no place for a girl like you.
- 5:52Speaker 5: You still think I'm too young?
- 5:54Speaker 7: Will you just wait till you see me all dressed up?
- 5:57Speaker 5: You won't think I'm too young then.
- 5:58Speaker 4: You belong at home, Trudy. Now, let's get mounted.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Marshall.
- 6:02Speaker 4: What?
- 6:03Speaker 5: If you want, you can marry me. And you want
- 6:07Speaker 5: to marry me?
- 6:10Speaker 4: It's not going to work, Trudy. I told you, you
- 6:12Speaker 4: belong at home with your pa, and that's where you're going.
- 6:15Speaker 5: And you keep talking about how Dodge is no place
- 6:18Speaker 5: for a decent girl.
- 6:19Speaker 4: We're wasting time. Let's go.
- 6:20Speaker 8: Let's go.
- 6:39Speaker 5: Well, there it is, Marshal. You can see we don't
- 6:42Speaker 5: make out too good.
- 6:44Speaker 4: This is hard land, Trudy.
- 6:46Speaker 7: Any land's hard for Pa. He had a pretty good
- 6:48Speaker 7: farm once, but he left it.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Why?
- 6:51Speaker 5: He had to.
- 6:51Speaker 7: Neighbors run him off for stealing stock.
- 6:55Speaker 5: He told me about it one night when he was drunk.
- 6:57Speaker 7: He laughed fit to kill.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Marshal, will you stay the night and think about taking
- 7:04Speaker 5: me away with you?
- 7:05Speaker 4: We'll see.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Come on. Let's go in and get this over with.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Pa?
- 7:27Speaker 1: Hey, Pa.
- 7:28Speaker 6: Hey, where did you run off to, girl?
- 7:33Speaker 5: I guess she was worried some, huh?
- 7:34Speaker 6: You sash me and I'll fit you a clout.
- 7:37Speaker 5: This is Marshal Stillen, Pa, from Dodge.
- 7:41Speaker 6: What you bringing the law out here for?
- 7:43Speaker 5: He brought me home, Pa.
- 7:45Speaker 2: You what?
- 7:46Speaker 7: I ran away yesterday morning.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Marshall brought me home.
- 7:49Speaker 6: I ought to tell you, good girl.
- 7:52Speaker 9: Running off that way.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Worried about who'd do the chores, weren't you, Pa?
- 7:55Speaker 9: Now, don't you talk like that, girl.
- 7:58Speaker 6: I missed you. I missed you something fierce.
- 8:02Speaker 5: I'll bet you did.
- 8:03Speaker 6: I worried so much that I didn't hardly eat nothing.
- 8:08Speaker 5: But you sure have been drinking enough, though.
- 8:10Speaker 6: Hey, Marshal, don't you pay her no mind. She's my
- 8:14Speaker 6: little girl, and I care a whole heap for her.
- 8:20Speaker 5: Listen to him. Don't I make you sick, Marshal?
- 8:23Speaker 4: I'll spend the night like you asked, Trudy. Now I
- 8:26Speaker 4: better take care of the horses.
- 8:27Speaker 6: What's this with you? Just about spending the night?
- 8:30Speaker 5: I asked him to, Pa.
- 8:32Speaker 8: Well, first, we don't need him around here.
- 8:35Speaker 5: And I'll tell you something else. Tomorrow I'm riding the
- 8:39Speaker 5: Dodge with him to stay.
- 8:40Speaker 6: You're what?
- 8:41Speaker 5: I'm leaving you, Pa, for good and all.
- 8:44Speaker 9: No, I'm not.
- 8:44Speaker 5: I'll leave you. Don't you hit me, Pa.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Now look, Mr.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Trash.
- 8:48Speaker 6: I'll tell you the truth.
- 8:51Speaker 4: You take her away, I'll come to charge.
- 8:54Speaker 6: I'll tell people what you done, young girl like that.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Why don't we wait and talk about all this later, huh?
- 9:00Speaker 4: When you're sober.
- 9:02Speaker 6: Well, I don't know as I aim to get sober.
- 9:05Speaker 6: But I know one thing for sure. You ain't taking
- 9:10Speaker 6: Trudy away.
- 9:12Speaker 5: Never mind him, Marshal. You go take care of the horses.
- 9:17Speaker 5: I'll find something for suckers.
- 9:18Speaker 6: Drunk or sober, I'll say just one thing. Just don't
- 9:24Speaker 6: mess with me and my Trudy. Just don't mess.
- 9:39Speaker 4: The Trent farm wasn't much of a place inside or out.
- 9:43Speaker 4: The front room where we ate was just a broken stove,
- 9:46Speaker 4: a couple of bunks, and burlap hung over the two
- 9:49Speaker 4: one-glass windows. Supper was some boiled greens and sheepherder's bread,
- 9:53Speaker 4: which Asa used to sop up his plate.
- 9:58Speaker 5: You eat like a hog, Pa.
- 10:01Speaker 6: He's got a real sharp tongue, ain't he, Marshal?
- 10:05Speaker 4: She can talk, all right. Oh, yeah, she can do everything.
- 10:08Speaker 5: Sure. Cook, clean, fetch, carry, feed the stock, anything.
- 10:13Speaker 6: Yeah, I taught her them things.
- 10:16Speaker 3: And a lot more.
- 10:17Speaker 4: I'll bet. And it's cheaper than hiring somebody.
- 10:20Speaker 7: Even cheaper than getting married, ain't it, Pa? Because if
- 10:23Speaker 7: you're married, you'd have another mouth to feed.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Ah, don't talk like that.
- 10:26Speaker 3: You know, you're my little girl.
- 10:30Speaker 6: We have good times together, don't we?
- 10:34Speaker 5: It's a palace of joy, Pa.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Now, Trudy girl.
- 10:37Speaker 7: You know how we celebrated Christmas, Marshall? Pa got drunk
- 10:40Speaker 7: and set me on fire. I had to run out
- 10:42Speaker 7: and roll in the snow or I'd have burned up.
- 10:44Speaker 7: And he wouldn't let me back in.
- 10:45Speaker 5: I'm here froze to death.
- 10:47Speaker 6: Well, I'm going to go out to the barn and
- 10:49Speaker 6: get me another jug of whiskey.
- 10:51Speaker 4: The one under the bed's empty.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I'll get myself a mug.
- 10:57Speaker 5: Well, Marshal, what do you think now? Still think I
- 11:00Speaker 5: shouldn't go on to Dodge with you?
- 11:03Speaker 4: Is he always like that?
- 11:05Speaker 5: Not always. Right now, he's kind of on good behavior
- 11:07Speaker 5: on account of you being here.
- 11:09Speaker 4: I see.
- 11:10Speaker 5: Dodge couldn't be worse than this, could it?
- 11:13Speaker 4: No, I guess not.
- 11:14Speaker 5: Then will you take me, please?
- 11:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll take you.
- 11:19Speaker 5: Honest?
- 11:19Speaker 4: Yeah, but your pa's gonna make a fuss. There's gonna
- 11:21Speaker 4: be trouble.
- 11:22Speaker 5: You afraid of him?
- 11:23Speaker 4: No, it's not that. I just don't want anybody hurt.
- 11:26Speaker 5: Well, ain't I worth fighting for?
- 11:29Speaker 3: Just a little?
- 11:30Speaker 4: Now, Trudy, I want you to get something straight. I'd
- 11:33Speaker 4: do the same for anybody. Now, look, the first thing
- 11:36Speaker 4: in the morning.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Pa, how long you been standing there?
- 11:42Speaker 6: Marshal, you can sleep in the barn.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Fine. You'll find a good spot right at the edge
- 11:52Speaker 4: of the loft.
- 11:54Speaker 6: You'll like it fine there.
- 11:57Speaker 4: You'll sleep good, too. The barn was warm and filled
- 12:08Speaker 4: with the smell of sweet hay. As I drifted off
- 12:11Speaker 4: to sleep, the figures of Trudy and her father turned
- 12:15Speaker 4: and twisted my mind. Then suddenly I was awake again,
- 12:19Speaker 4: wide awake, because somebody was moving toward me across the
- 12:22Speaker 4: barn floor. For a moment I thought it was Trudy,
- 12:25Speaker 4: and then I saw the rifle in his hand. Hold it, Trent. Die, blast, ye... Asa. Asa. Pa!
- 12:44Speaker 5: Where are you, Pa?
- 12:46Speaker 2: Marshall?
- 12:47Speaker 4: In the barn, Trudy. What happened?
- 12:51Speaker 5: Did he shoot you? No. I heard him get up
- 12:54Speaker 5: and go out, and I followed as soon as I could.
- 12:58Speaker 5: Is he dead?
- 13:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:02Speaker 5: He shouldn't have tried it.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Trudy, I'm sorry.
- 13:06Speaker 5: Don't be. He had it coming.
- 13:09Speaker 4: You go on back to the house. It'll be dawn
- 13:11Speaker 4: in an hour. I got some work to do here.
- 13:13Speaker 5: I ain't gonna stay on this rotten farm now, Marshal.
- 13:17Speaker 5: That's for sure.
- 13:18Speaker 4: You get your things together, Trudy. We'll leave for Dodge
- 13:20Speaker 4: as soon as it's light. Just as the sun was
- 13:33Speaker 4: breaking over the horizon, Trudy and I rode away from
- 13:36Speaker 4: her father's ranch for the last time. She never once
- 13:40Speaker 4: looked back, but I did. The roof sagging at one end,
- 13:44Speaker 4: the boarded windows, the unwatered patch of corn, the makeshift barn.
- 13:50Speaker 4: A small cross now stood over a stone-covered grave. It
- 13:55Speaker 4: wasn't a hard place to leave. In Dodge, I told
- 14:01Speaker 4: Kitty about the whole affair, and she promised to give
- 14:03Speaker 4: the girl a hand. So she put Trudy to work
- 14:06Speaker 4: in the long branch, so she could keep an eye
- 14:07Speaker 4: on her that way.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Hello, Matt.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Hey, you're doing quite a business.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Yeah, sit down.
- 14:15Speaker 4: Oh, thanks. Well, how's Trudy working out?
- 14:21Speaker 3: Oh, fine, I guess.
- 14:24Speaker 4: What do you mean, you guess?
- 14:26Speaker 3: It's a little soon to know yet. That girl's got
- 14:29Speaker 3: a mind of her own.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Any trouble?
- 14:31Speaker 3: Well, no, no trouble at all. She's over there at
- 14:35Speaker 3: the bar now, talking with Gar Klein.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Gar Klein?
- 14:38Speaker 3: Yeah, that nice-looking kid there.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Now, who's he?
- 14:42Speaker 3: I don't know too much about him. Never used to
- 14:44Speaker 3: come in here too much. I think maybe he's in
- 14:47Speaker 3: love with Judy.
- 14:49Speaker 4: In love?
- 14:50Speaker 3: What's the matter? You jealous?
- 14:53Speaker 4: I don't start that, Kitty.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Well, I know one thing. The girl's got quite a
- 14:58Speaker 3: case on you.
- 14:59Speaker 4: She's just a kid. It won't last.
- 15:01Speaker 3: I don't know about that. A U.S. Marshal's a good
- 15:04Speaker 3: catch for a girl.
- 15:05Speaker 4: She meets a lot of men here. Maybe she'll forget
- 15:08Speaker 4: about it.
- 15:08Speaker 3: From what I can see, Gar doesn't let her meet
- 15:11Speaker 3: many men. He's so jealous he won't let her out
- 15:13Speaker 3: of his sight.
- 15:14Speaker 4: I guess they're both pretty young.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Ha!
- 15:16Speaker 3: Don't underestimate young love matters. Besides, this has been going
- 15:20Speaker 3: on for three days now.
- 15:21Speaker 5: I saw you come in, Marshal.
- 15:23Speaker 4: How are you, Trudy?
- 15:25Speaker 5: Gar says he never met you.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Hello.
- 15:28Speaker 9: Marshal?
- 15:29Speaker 4: You new in town, Gar?
- 15:31Speaker 5: Gar hasn't been here much longer than I have, Marshal.
- 15:34Speaker 5: But he's staying on, ain't you, Gar?
- 15:37Speaker 4: Yes, I am. Well, that's good.
- 15:40Speaker 8: I've been promised a job of work out at Emmett
- 15:42Speaker 8: Bower's place. Then when I'm able, I'm getting Trudy out
- 15:47Speaker 8: of here.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Well, the long branch isn't that bad. I keep an
- 15:51Speaker 3: eye on her when you're not around, Gar.
- 15:54Speaker 8: I thank you for that, Miss Kitty. But just the
- 15:56Speaker 8: same girl like Trudy. She shouldn't have come here in.
- 15:59Speaker 9: The first place.
- 16:00Speaker 8: She's not used to being around a saloon.
- 16:03Speaker 4: I guess you're right.
- 16:04Speaker 9: Like I say, it wasn't fitting to bring her here
- 16:07Speaker 9: at all.
- 16:08Speaker 5: Now, don't drop like that. Marshall knew what he was doing.
- 16:12Speaker 5: He wanted to bring me here. Didn't you, Marshall?
- 16:15Speaker 4: Well, uh... I don't know as I had much choice.
- 16:19Speaker 5: But you did bring me. And now you're responsible for me.
- 16:23Speaker 9: No, I ain't.
- 16:23Speaker 8: There's not any such thing. I'm the one who's responsible
- 16:27Speaker 8: for you and me only.
- 16:30Speaker 9: You keep away from her, Marshall. You keep away from
- 16:33Speaker 9: now on. Come on, Trudy.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Come on. Well, you see what I mean?
- 16:44Speaker 4: All I came in here for was a quiet drink.
- 16:48Speaker 4: You know, the next time you better have Sam bring
- 16:50Speaker 4: a bucket of beer down to my office.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Oh, it's not that bad, Matt. I'll tell you what.
- 16:56Speaker 3: This time it's on the house, huh?
- 16:57Speaker 4: I guess I'm getting old, Kitty, but... somehow it rubs
- 17:01Speaker 4: the wrong way to be warned off by a youngster
- 17:03Speaker 4: who's not dry behind the ears yet.
- 17:05Speaker 3: He's just showing off, Matt.
- 17:07Speaker 4: I hope you're right, Matt. Well, how about that drink, huh? Yeah,
- 17:25Speaker 4: come in.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Evening, Marshal.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Trudy, what are you doing here this time of night?
- 17:33Speaker 5: I came to see you.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Well, aren't you supposed to be working?
- 17:36Speaker 5: I asked Kitty for a few hours off. Said I
- 17:39Speaker 5: was sick.
- 17:40Speaker 4: I see.
- 17:41Speaker 5: You haven't been to Long Branch all night.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Well, I've been busy.
- 17:46Speaker 5: You don't seem very glad to see me.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Now look, Trudy, let's get this straight.
- 17:53Speaker 5: Marshall, I came here to tell you something. What? I
- 17:57Speaker 5: just thought you ought to know now. I'm going to
- 17:59Speaker 5: get married.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Well, that's fine.
- 18:03Speaker 5: To you.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Now, wait a minute. I thought you were talking about
- 18:08Speaker 4: Gar Klein.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Gar?
- 18:10Speaker 5: Why him?
- 18:11Speaker 4: Because he's in love with you. He got himself a
- 18:12Speaker 4: job at Emmett Bower's so he could save enough money
- 18:14Speaker 4: to marry you, get you a place.
- 18:16Speaker 7: Gar's just a fence-riding cowboy, and that's all he's ever
- 18:18Speaker 7: gonna be. I'm not gonna marry a man like that.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Like I said. I'm going to marry you.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Trudy, you're a foolish, romantic little girl, and I'm sure
- 18:27Speaker 4: not about to get married to you or anybody else,
- 18:29Speaker 4: not now or any time. Now, have you got that straight?
- 18:32Speaker 5: Little girl, am I?
- 18:33Speaker 4: You ask for it.
- 18:34Speaker 5: I'll teach you how to talk to a woman.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Stop it.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Stop it.
- 18:38Speaker 4: Take it.
- 18:39Speaker 5: I said stop it.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Now, you just calm down. You feeling better now?
- 18:49Speaker 5: I'll tell you how I feel.
- 18:52Speaker 7: I'm going to tell everybody in Dodge you killed my
- 18:54Speaker 7: pa and then you ran off with me.
- 18:57Speaker 5: How my pa tried to stop you and you shot
- 18:59Speaker 5: him dead and forced me to come with you.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Trudy, you listen to me. You don't really care about
- 19:03Speaker 4: me at all. Now, you be honest with yourself. You
- 19:05Speaker 4: just want to be a U.S. Marshal's wife. Isn't that right?
- 19:09Speaker 2: Trudy.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Trudy, wait a minute. You try and do good for
- 19:16Speaker 4: somebody and this is what happens. Matt, you look kind
- 19:36Speaker 4: of tired. What?
- 19:39Speaker 9: I say you look tired.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Oh.
- 19:43Speaker 10: Well, just like I've always told you, Chester, you can't
- 19:45Speaker 10: burn the candle at both ends and not have it show.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Oh, she must be a handful, all right.
- 19:53Speaker 9: She's got Matt going all right.
- 19:55Speaker 10: It's a sure sign something's in the wind when they
- 19:57Speaker 10: won't even talk about it.
- 19:58Speaker 9: Yeah. Well, it even happened to me one time, Doc.
- 20:02Speaker 4: Yeah? Back in Texas it was.
- 20:04Speaker 8: And this little old gal, bless her heart, just wouldn't
- 20:07Speaker 8: give me a minute's peace.
- 20:08Speaker 4: She must have been a ridge-running beauty.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:11Speaker 9: Well, now she wasn't too bad, Mr. John.
- 20:14Speaker 10: Say, you better get married, Matt. It's a whole lot
- 20:17Speaker 10: easier in a man than all this court.
- 20:19Speaker 4: I'd just hate to do this to you, gentlemen, but
- 20:21Speaker 4: I'm going to have to leave. Don't forget my check
- 20:25Speaker 4: when you leave, huh? Steak, eggs, and coffee.
- 20:27Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Matt!
- 20:29Speaker 3: Matt!
- 20:35Speaker 9: Marshal.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Huh? Oh, gar.
- 20:39Speaker 9: I've been looking for you.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Now, what's the trouble?
- 20:43Speaker 9: I heard all about it.
- 20:44Speaker 4: All about what?
- 20:46Speaker 9: Trudy told me last night. She told me everything.
- 20:48Speaker 4: You've been drinking?
- 20:49Speaker 9: Last night I was, but not now.
- 20:52Speaker 4: I see.
- 20:53Speaker 8: Last night, Trudy told me how you shot her paw
- 20:56Speaker 8: so she could run off with it.
- 20:57Speaker 4: Now, wait a minute, Gar.
- 20:58Speaker 9: Now you got a hearing dodge and you don't want
- 20:59Speaker 9: her no more.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Gar, will you listen to me? Trudy's lying to you.
- 21:02Speaker 4: You're a fool to believe all that talk.
- 21:04Speaker 9: I love her, Marshal, and she loves me. And I
- 21:07Speaker 9: ain't going to have you make sport of her.
- 21:08Speaker 4: I'm not trying to hurt her. I haven't said anything
- 21:10Speaker 4: against her. Can't you see this is what she wants?
- 21:12Speaker 4: She's trying to make you jealous, trying to get back
- 21:14Speaker 4: at me for turning her down.
- 21:15Speaker 9: I'm going to kill you, Marshal.
- 21:16Speaker 4: You better just go along, son. We can talk about
- 21:18Speaker 4: this later.
- 21:19Speaker 9: Not hardly, Marshal.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Gar, don't be a fool.
- 21:21Speaker 8: This is for Trudy and what you've done to her.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Gar.
- 21:32Speaker 9: Why don't you finish me off?
- 21:34Speaker 3: Why don't you.
- 21:35Speaker 4: You're not hurt bad, son. You're going to be all right.
- 21:37Speaker 4: What in the world happened, Mr.
- 21:38Speaker 3: Dillon?
- 21:39Speaker 9: Aren't you all right, Vic?
- 21:40Speaker 4: Yeah. Doc, see to this boy here, huh? And that
- 21:43Speaker 4: Chester can take him over to the jail till he
- 21:44Speaker 4: cools off.
- 21:45Speaker 5: Where are you going?
- 21:46Speaker 4: Down to the Long Branch. I'm going to have a
- 21:48Speaker 4: talk with Trudy Trent.
- 21:58Speaker 5: I heard the shooting, Matt.
- 21:59Speaker 3: What was it?
- 22:00Speaker 4: Gar Klein, but I'll tell you later. Right now, we're
- 22:02Speaker 4: going to find Trudy.
- 22:03Speaker 3: It won't be too easy, I'm afraid.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Well, easy or not, I'm going to find her and
- 22:07Speaker 4: I'm going to run her out of town. Trudy's caused
- 22:09Speaker 4: all the trouble she's going to around here.
- 22:11Speaker 3: She's already gone, Matt.
- 22:12Speaker 4: What?
- 22:13Speaker 3: What happened to Gar? Did you shoot him?
- 22:14Speaker 4: Yeah, but he'll be all right. What's this about Trudy?
- 22:17Speaker 3: Well, last night, Gar was in here with Trudy and
- 22:20Speaker 3: she got him pretty drunk. From what I could tell,
- 22:22Speaker 3: they were talking about you. Later, Gar passed out, and
- 22:26Speaker 3: I had Sam put him in the back room to
- 22:27Speaker 3: sleep it off. That's when Judy met the gambler.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Gambler?
- 22:31Speaker 3: Yeah, from St. Louis. He came in last night, late,
- 22:35Speaker 3: real late, on his way to San Francisco. Judy was
- 22:38Speaker 3: at loose ends, and she got to talking with him,
- 22:40Speaker 3: and they left together just half an hour ago in
- 22:43Speaker 3: the morning stage.
- 22:45Speaker 4: I see. I guess maybe he was a better catch
- 22:49Speaker 4: than Gar Klein.
- 22:50Speaker 3: He looked like he was pretty rich. Fancy clothes and all.
- 22:54Speaker 3: so I suppose she figured he was better than you
- 22:57Speaker 3: two since she finally figured out she'd never get you.
- 23:00Speaker 4: It's too bad about Gar. But I guess he was
- 23:03Speaker 4: trying to do the right thing, at least the way
- 23:05Speaker 4: he saw it.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Trouble is, she never really cared for him at all.
- 23:10Speaker 4: He was fighting for just a lot of shadows.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Well, maybe that's better than not fighting for anything at all.
- 23:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess you're right, Kitty. I guess you're right.
- 23:29Speaker 3: THE END.
