Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 8/6: Intensity Rises, Brown and Gonzalez Heat Up, Defense Flourishes
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Patriots are back in pads for a six time in
- 0:02Speaker 1: eight days. As the intensity continues to ramp up. Aj
- 0:04Speaker 1: Brown and Christian Gonzalez are going at it, and the
- 0:07Speaker 1: defense finished the day with a flourish let's get into it.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome everybody to the Patriots camp cast, and we're back
- 0:21Speaker 1: for practice number eleven. That's right, Paul, we've crossed the
- 0:24Speaker 1: halfway point of training camp and the intensity and the
- 0:27Speaker 1: heat continue to dominate this practice.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I was a little surprised that we got out there.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We're kind of expecting them dial back a little bit,
- 0:33Speaker 1: maybe in shells, but they were back in pads, getting
- 0:35Speaker 1: after another competitive practice.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe we switched those shells and pads days. We'll
- 0:39Speaker 3: see what they're in tomorrow, but pads again today after
- 0:42Speaker 3: the walk through yesterday and a lot of team drills
- 0:45Speaker 3: that that was one of the things that we noticed.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I think the last couple of practices in full pads
- 0:50Speaker 3: is a lot of team a lot eleven on eleven,
- 0:53Speaker 3: not as much of you know, the seven on seven's
- 0:55Speaker 3: and the one on ones and all that kind of stuff.
- 0:57Speaker 3: So they did one quick period of that in between
- 1:00Speaker 3: eleven on eleven's, but a lot of just put the
- 1:03Speaker 3: ball down and let's play. And I think we're at
- 1:05Speaker 3: that point of practice of training camp where we got
- 1:08Speaker 3: to make a game like at this point, I think
- 1:10Speaker 3: that's what we saw today with a two minute drill
- 1:12Speaker 3: at the end too.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I did think there was an overall sort of lull.
- 1:16Speaker 4: There was definitely more intensity on the defensive side, particularly
- 1:19Speaker 4: in the secondary. I think you mentioned in the tease
- 1:23Speaker 4: Mike finishing with a flourish how about three interceptions on
- 1:26Speaker 4: three consecutive plays to close out practice, So I definitely
- 1:29Speaker 4: thought there was a little more juice on defense, but
- 1:31Speaker 4: you can definitely see the wear and tear starting to show.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yeah, let's talk about that a little bit.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I mean, the Christian Zalaz aj Brown matchup continues to
- 1:37Speaker 1: just the camp so fun to watch their competitive with it.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I thought Gonzalez kind.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Of owned the day up until that two minute when
- 1:44Speaker 1: AJ Brown did come down with a little bit of
- 1:46Speaker 1: a contested catch there.
- 1:47Speaker 2: But that matchup to me has been so much fun.
- 1:49Speaker 1: You see Christian Zalez talking about it after practice, talking
- 1:53Speaker 1: a little trash back and forth. But as we like
- 1:55Speaker 1: to say, iron sharpens iron, seems like those guys are
- 1:57Speaker 1: making each other better.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the hope.
- 1:59Speaker 3: I thought Brown got behind him on one and Drake
- 2:02Speaker 3: May kind of threw the wrong shoulder and it didn't
- 2:04Speaker 3: give AJ Brown the best ball. But overall, I think
- 2:07Speaker 3: Gonzalez has kind of controlled the deep part of the
- 2:09Speaker 3: field and given up a lot of the underneath stuff
- 2:11Speaker 3: da Aj Brown. And that's been sort of the chess
- 2:13Speaker 3: match that you've seen back and forth. So it's been
- 2:16Speaker 3: interesting to see those two guys. I can't think of
- 2:18Speaker 3: really a matchup in a Patriots camp that's that star
- 2:22Speaker 3: studded where it's really one v one the whole practice
- 2:26Speaker 3: with two guys going against each other. So I guess
- 2:29Speaker 3: we could get philosophical and talk about like well the
- 2:32Speaker 3: safety and against the quarterback or something, but like truly
- 2:35Speaker 3: going one on one like that, rep after rep after
- 2:38Speaker 3: rep has been a ton of fun just to watch.
- 2:41Speaker 3: You say, iron sharpens iron. There's different types of levels
- 2:45Speaker 3: of iron sharpens iron. This is a high up there iron.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and it was great to hear it. I don't
- 2:50Speaker 2: know my iron spell, but.
- 2:52Speaker 4: Gonzalez talked about it too, you know, he said it's
- 2:54Speaker 4: you know, he started, he was like, it's good on good, yeah,
- 2:58Speaker 4: And I think he want like he was going to
- 2:59Speaker 4: say great on great, but I don't think he wanted
- 3:01Speaker 4: to put himself in that category. And then he said,
- 3:03Speaker 4: it's definitely a number one receiver in the NFL against
- 3:06Speaker 4: the you know, a number one corner. So he talked
- 3:10Speaker 4: about how you can't help, but you know, sort of
- 3:12Speaker 4: get motivated by that and accept the challenge. I do
- 3:15Speaker 4: think for the most part during camp, I think Gonzalez
- 3:18Speaker 4: has had the upper hand. I share Evans's viewpoint on
- 3:21Speaker 4: that one deep ball down the sideline. I would have
- 3:26Speaker 4: liked to have seen that play unfold a little bit
- 3:28Speaker 4: differently to see just how good the coverage was and
- 3:31Speaker 4: if the ball was where I.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Think Brown was expecting it.
- 3:34Speaker 4: I think that may have been another one of those
- 3:36Speaker 4: plays where you see two guys fighting for the ball,
- 3:38Speaker 4: who wins, but the throw wasn't necessarily where it needed
- 3:40Speaker 4: to be. But a lot of fun to watch those
- 3:42Speaker 4: two guys compete.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Yeah, let's talk about that.
- 3:44Speaker 1: In the last you know, two minute trio they put
- 3:46Speaker 1: with like one twenty up on the clock, you can
- 3:47Speaker 1: tell they're you know, being conscious, hand in the ball back,
- 3:50Speaker 1: you know, doing all the things you need to do.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Got off to a good start and you hit.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Hunter Henry for a little game, a little checkdown to
- 3:56Speaker 1: Remandra got stopped short. That was then Brown comes up
- 3:58Speaker 1: with the catch. They clock it, and that's when things
- 4:01Speaker 1: went sideways. Yeah, Marcus Jones comes up with a pick.
- 4:03Speaker 1: And then the final play of Drake May's eleven on
- 4:06Speaker 1: eleven there in the red zone was Kevin Bayern dropping
- 4:09Speaker 1: into coverage where it looked like Drake May was maybe
- 4:12Speaker 1: throwing into a party down there, just like there or
- 4:14Speaker 1: a lot of Bob's. Kevin Byrt's dropping back like he's
- 4:17Speaker 1: fielding a punt, went up and got it.
- 4:18Speaker 4: I'm going to say that was the worst play that
- 4:20Speaker 4: I've seen Drake May have of all summer.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I'm going to give a single worst rent potentially a
- 4:24Speaker 2: context out.
- 4:25Speaker 3: I wonder if that was like fourth down in the game.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I think it may have been, because like that to
- 4:29Speaker 3: me seemed like a hail Mary.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Absolutely think it may have been. And I still would
- 4:33Speaker 2: say it was the worst throw that I've seen him make.
- 4:34Speaker 3: All threw it to Hunter Henry, who's probably the tallest
- 4:37Speaker 3: guy out there, and he kind of just threw it
- 4:39Speaker 3: up in the end, so it.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Gave him no opportunity to make a player.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I mean, there was three blue shirts in the way,
- 4:43Speaker 3: so it would have been hard the pick to Marcus
- 4:45Speaker 3: Jones had I thought it was just a really good
- 4:47Speaker 3: read and a good play by Marcus Jones to kind
- 4:49Speaker 3: of jump in front of I think it was Booty,
- 4:52Speaker 3: but yeah, it just kind of beat.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Him to the spot there.
- 4:56Speaker 3: But I would agree it was not a good good
- 4:58Speaker 3: ending to practice unless he heard defense guy deuce and
- 5:01Speaker 3: you want to say it was a good ending to.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Practice either way.
- 5:03Speaker 3: But what I did like about the two minute drill
- 5:05Speaker 3: to start was like that those were the like easy
- 5:08Speaker 3: money throws.
- 5:09Speaker 2: The first down, yeah, first first, Yeah, that defense.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Is always give you those little checkdowns, and everybody's trying
- 5:15Speaker 3: to push the ball down the field and get it
- 5:17Speaker 3: all at once, and they were able to matriculate it
- 5:20Speaker 3: into a scoring area of the field and then that's
- 5:23Speaker 3: when it went sideways. So a good start to the
- 5:25Speaker 3: two minute drill, I thought in terms of the patients
- 5:27Speaker 3: that Drake may show to get the ball down the
- 5:30Speaker 3: field into it area where he could throw it into
- 5:32Speaker 3: the end zone and then obviously not a good finish.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah, so Buyer makes the interception, the defense celebrates energy
- 5:38Speaker 1: is high, Tommy DeVito, the two's coming.
- 5:39Speaker 2: In celebration for Kevin Byrd by the way, we'll get
- 5:42Speaker 2: to that.
- 5:43Speaker 1: But then Tommy DeVito comes out very next play, John
- 5:45Speaker 1: Saunders picks him off.
- 5:46Speaker 5: I don't even know where that ball was going, like
- 5:49Speaker 5: I probably Tommy DeVito's was. Yeah, I don't even know
- 5:51Speaker 5: who the intended receiver was on that one. Gay Back
- 5:54Speaker 5: is flashed inside as well on Demetrious crown Over. I
- 5:57Speaker 5: thought AKIS noticed him a couple of times today getting
- 6:00Speaker 5: pressure on the quarterback.
- 6:01Speaker 3: So that was that play. To me, I want to
- 6:04Speaker 3: give Drake mayn out and say that maybe he was
- 6:07Speaker 3: thrown up.
- 6:08Speaker 4: It may have been a desperation play. Yeah, I agree
- 6:10Speaker 4: with you that I had the looks.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 3: The other two interceptions we were not good.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Well, let's let's talk about a little bit of housekeeping
- 6:17Speaker 1: stuff because we said the heat, a lot of you know,
- 6:19Speaker 1: six padded pack practices they're getting after it, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 1: some injuries. Romeo Dobbs missed the second day, walked through yesterday,
- 6:25Speaker 1: was not out there today. Carlton Davis continues to miss practice.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Will Campbell was spotted yesterday with an arm brace on
- 6:32Speaker 1: he didn't participate in eleven on eleven's Marcus Bryant got
- 6:35Speaker 1: in there at left tackle.
- 6:36Speaker 2: A little bit hat tip to Marcus Bryant.
- 6:39Speaker 4: He was out there a lot of plays, not just
- 6:41Speaker 4: the ones that left tackle. He was with some of
- 6:43Speaker 4: the secondary groups at different spots too, And again, that
- 6:47Speaker 4: was a tough day to go through that had a
- 6:50Speaker 4: little hat tip to Marcus Bryant today a little extra duty.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yeah, he's had a pretty good camp.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I think, you know, I think there's still ways to
- 6:56Speaker 3: go with his pad level and you know, his ability
- 6:59Speaker 3: to square up guys in the run game off the ball,
- 7:02Speaker 3: but I think he's had a solid camp and is
- 7:04Speaker 3: really the fourth tackle now, I think pretty solidified there.
- 7:08Speaker 3: I did think it was interesting that he got the
- 7:10Speaker 3: reps at left tackle over Caleb Lomoo. Now maybe they
- 7:13Speaker 3: wanted Lomu to work at right tackle today and so
- 7:15Speaker 3: that was why they did that, But Will Campbell working
- 7:19Speaker 3: off to the side, didn't participate, and it was Marcus
- 7:21Speaker 3: Bryant that got the call up to the first team
- 7:24Speaker 3: left tackle instead of Lomu. So just a little bit
- 7:26Speaker 3: notable to me that they went to Bryant out. But
- 7:29Speaker 3: right now, if I had to make a roster projection.
- 7:32Speaker 3: He's the fourth tackle that I think is on the
- 7:33Speaker 3: team right now.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Let's get a couple other just little notes. Evan, you
- 7:36Speaker 1: mentioned gay backus getting some run with the ones. Seems
- 7:38Speaker 1: like his workload is increasing a little bit. Charles Woods
- 7:41Speaker 1: getting you know, with the first team at cornerback without
- 7:43Speaker 1: Carlton Davis there, he's been their top option.
- 7:46Speaker 2: He walked off hopefully.
- 7:47Speaker 1: He related, that's what we hope one days like this, Paul.
- 7:49Speaker 1: But yeah, Kendall Vildor gets in there and he's.
- 7:51Speaker 2: I don't know if that one was he related. He
- 7:53Speaker 2: went down.
- 7:53Speaker 3: He was covering Tomorroo Douglass in the slot and I
- 7:56Speaker 3: think he got picked off by like a linebacker or
- 7:59Speaker 3: something in the middle of the field and he went
- 8:01Speaker 3: I saw him go down, and uh, he got back
- 8:04Speaker 3: up though it wasn't like a non contact injury, which
- 8:07Speaker 3: makes me think that it was like he just kind
- 8:08Speaker 3: of got right into or something.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Like him and Jim Whale and you know, walking off together.
- 8:13Speaker 1: He's under his own power, so hopefully he's okay. But
- 8:15Speaker 1: you know, opportunity for Kendall Vildor to get in there. Uh,
- 8:18Speaker 1: you know, Paul, your guy Channing Canada getting some some options.
- 8:21Speaker 1: It seems like those cornerbacks.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Doesn't want to head Yeah one brand uh, but a lot.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Of those guys getting run at that, you know, even
- 8:28Speaker 1: Kobe Minor as well, you know, just they've had some
- 8:30Speaker 1: injuries there. Davis has been out, so opportunity. It's an
- 8:33Speaker 1: interesting position where it seems like there's a bunch of
- 8:35Speaker 1: guys one of those competitions on the roster of where
- 8:37Speaker 1: I feel like everybody's kind of in the mix.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I still think.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Charles Woods is the guy that's gonna be the fourth corner,
- 8:43Speaker 3: third rotational outside guy. It's really a competition. To me,
- 8:47Speaker 3: are they going to keep five of them? Are they
- 8:48Speaker 3: going to keep six of them? And who are those players?
- 8:51Speaker 2: You know?
- 8:51Speaker 3: I I still feel like Prunty has done enough so
- 8:53Speaker 3: far that if it's between him and like a Kendallville door,
- 8:57Speaker 3: I'd probably keep punting just for the upside and the
- 8:59Speaker 3: youth and the fact that you just drafted him.
- 9:01Speaker 2: But it's an interesting spot to look at.
- 9:03Speaker 3: I would say those corner and linebacker are the two
- 9:06Speaker 3: spots where we've seen the most kind of competition. At
- 9:08Speaker 3: the back of the roster. Seems like Muma's really taken
- 9:12Speaker 3: a step ahead.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Of everybody else.
- 9:13Speaker 4: They started I think the first team period in what
- 9:16Speaker 4: would I guess be the actual base defense.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Yeah, three linebackers, and Muma was the third. Yeah.
- 9:22Speaker 4: To your point, some of those sort of secondary positions
- 9:25Speaker 4: that we've been talking about are starting to clarify themselves.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Yep.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Yeah, Well that'll do it for practice number eleven. We
- 9:31Speaker 1: back on Friday. For practice number twelve. It is open
- 9:33Speaker 1: to the public, so if you're around here, come on down.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Of course, we all have our eye on that Indianapolis
- 9:38Speaker 1: Coach joint practice coming up on Tuesday.
