Speaker 1: Chapter one Down the rabbit Hole, Alice was beginning to
• 0:04
Speaker 1: get very tired of sitting by her sister on the
• 0:06
Speaker 1: bank and of having nothing to do. Once or twice
• 0:09
Speaker 1: she peeped into the book her sister was reading, but
• 0:12
Speaker 1: it had no pictures or conversations in it, And what's
• 0:14
Speaker 1: the use of a book, thought Alice without pictures or conversation.
• 0:19
Speaker 1: So she was considering in her own mind as well
• 0:21
Speaker 1: as she could, for the hot day made her feel
• 0:23
Speaker 1: very sleepy and stupid whether the pleasure of making a
• 0:26
Speaker 1: daisy chain would be worth the trouble of getting up
• 0:28
Speaker 1: and picking the daisies. When suddenly a white rabbit with
• 0:32
Speaker 1: pink eyes ran close by her. There was nothing so
• 0:36
Speaker 1: very remarkable in that, nor did Alice think it so
• 0:39
Speaker 1: very much out of the way to hear the rabbit
• 0:40
Speaker 1: say to itself, oh dear, oh dear, I shall be late.
• 0:44
Speaker 1: When she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her
• 0:46
Speaker 1: that she ought to have wondered at this, but at
• 0:48
Speaker 1: the time it all seemed quite natural. But when the
• 0:51
Speaker 1: rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat pocket
• 0:55
Speaker 1: and looked at it and then hurried on, Alice started
• 0:58
Speaker 1: to her feet for it flushed cross her mind that
• 1:01
Speaker 1: she had never before seen a rabbit with either a
• 1:03
Speaker 1: waistcoat pocket or a watch to take out of it. And,
• 1:06
Speaker 1: burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it,
• 1:09
Speaker 1: and fortunately was just in time to see it pop
• 1:12
Speaker 1: down a large rabbit hole under the hedge in another moment.
• 1:15
Speaker 1: Down went Alice after it, never once considering how in
• 1:18
Speaker 1: the world she was to get out again. The rabbit
• 1:21
Speaker 1: hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way,
• 1:23
Speaker 1: and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had
• 1:27
Speaker 1: not a moment to think about stopping herself before she
• 1:29
Speaker 1: found herself falling down a very deep well. Either the
• 1:33
Speaker 1: well was very deep or she fell very slowly, for
• 1:36
Speaker 1: she had plenty of time as she went down to
• 1:38
Speaker 1: look about her and to wonder what was going to
• 1:40
Speaker 1: happen next. First, she tried to look down and make
• 1:43
Speaker 1: out what she was coming to, but it was too
• 1:45
Speaker 1: dark to see anything. Then she looked at the sides
• 1:48
Speaker 1: of the well and noticed that they were filled with
• 1:50
Speaker 1: cupboards and book shelves. Here and there she saw maps
• 1:54
Speaker 1: and pictures hung upon pegs. She took down a jar
• 1:57
Speaker 1: from one of the shelves as she passed. It was
• 2:00
Speaker 1: labeled orange marmalade, but to her great disappointment, it was empty.
• 2:04
Speaker 1: She did not like to drop the dar for fear
• 2:06
Speaker 1: of killing somebody, so she managed to put it into
• 2:08
Speaker 1: one of the cupboards as she fell past it. Well,
• 2:12
Speaker 1: thought Alice to herself, after such a fall as this,
• 2:14
Speaker 1: I shall think nothing of tumbling downstairs. How brave they'll
• 2:18
Speaker 1: all think me at home. Why I wouldn't say anything
• 2:20
Speaker 1: about it? Even if I fell off the top of
• 2:22
Speaker 1: a house, which was very likely true, Down down, down,
• 2:28
Speaker 1: would the fall never come.
• 2:29
  Speaker 2: To an end?
• 2:30
Speaker 1: I wonder how many miles I've fallen by this time,
• 2:33
Speaker 1: she said aloud, I must be getting somewhere near the
• 2:36
Speaker 1: center of the earth. Let me see, that would be
• 2:38
Speaker 1: four thousand miles down, I think for you see, Alice
• 2:41
Speaker 1: had learned several things of this sort in her lessons
• 2:43
Speaker 1: in the schoolroom, and though this was not a very
• 2:45
Speaker 1: good opportunity for showing off her knowledge, as there was
• 2:47
Speaker 1: no one to listen to her, still it was good
• 2:50
Speaker 1: practice to say it over, Yes, that's about the right distance.
• 2:53
Speaker 1: But then I wonder what latitude or longitude I've got
• 2:56
Speaker 1: to Alice had no idea what latitude was or longitude either,
• 3:00
Speaker 1: but thought they were nice grand words to say. Presently,
• 3:04
Speaker 1: she began again, I wonder if I shall fall right
• 3:07
Speaker 1: through the earth, how funny it'll seem to come out
• 3:10
Speaker 1: among the people that walk with their heads downward, the antipathies.
• 3:13
Speaker 1: I think she was rather glad there was no one
• 3:16
Speaker 1: listening this time, as it didn't sound at all the
• 3:18
Speaker 1: right word. But I shall have to ask them, what
• 3:21
Speaker 1: if the name of the country is, you know, please, ma'am,
• 3:24
Speaker 1: is this New Zealand or Australia? And she tried to
• 3:27
Speaker 1: Curtsey as she spoke, fancy curtseying, as you're falling through
• 3:30
Speaker 1: the air, do you think you could manage it? And
• 3:33
Speaker 1: what an ignorant little girl, she'll think me for asking. No,
• 3:36
Speaker 1: it'll never do to ask. Perhaps I shall see it
• 3:38
Speaker 1: written up somewhere down, down down. There was nothing else
• 3:43
Speaker 1: to do, so Alice soon began talking again. Dinah missed
• 3:47
Speaker 1: me very much tonight. I should think Dinah was the cat.
• 3:51
Speaker 1: I hope they'll remember her saucer of milk at tea time. Dinah,
• 3:55
Speaker 1: my dear, wish you were down here with me. There
• 3:57
Speaker 1: are no mice in the air. I'm afraid but you
• 3:59
Speaker 1: might catch a ba, and that's very like a mouse,
• 4:02
Speaker 1: you know. But do catskeet bats?
• 4:04
  Speaker 3: I wonder?
• 4:05
Speaker 1: And here Alice began to get rather sleepy, and went
• 4:08
Speaker 1: on saying to herself in a dreamy sort of way,
• 4:10
Speaker 1: do cats see bats? Do cats eat bats? And sometimes
• 4:14
  Speaker 1: do batsy cats?
• 4:15
  Speaker 4: For you?
• 4:16
  Speaker 5: See?
• 4:16
Speaker 1: As she couldn't answer either question, it didn't much matter
• 4:19
Speaker 1: which way she put it. She felt that she was
• 4:21
Speaker 1: dozing off and had just begun to dream that she
• 4:24
Speaker 1: was walking hand in hand with Dinah and saying to
• 4:26
Speaker 1: her very earnestly, now, Dinah, tell me the truth. Did
• 4:30
Speaker 1: you ever eat a bat? When suddenly, thump, thump, down,
• 4:34
Speaker 1: she came upon a heap of sticks and dry leaves,
• 4:37
Speaker 1: and the fall was over. Alice was not a bit hurt,
• 4:40
Speaker 1: and she jumped up on her feet. In a moment,
• 4:42
Speaker 1: she looked up, but it was all dark. Overhead before
• 4:45
Speaker 1: her was another long passage, and the white rabbit was
• 4:48
Speaker 1: still in sight. Hurrying down it. There was not a
• 4:51
Speaker 1: moment to be lost. Away went Alice like the wind,
• 4:53
Speaker 1: and was just in time to hear it say as
• 4:55
Speaker 1: it turned a corner, Oh, my ears are whiskers. How
• 4:58
Speaker 1: late it's getting She was close bey behind it when
• 5:00
Speaker 1: she turned the corner, but the rabbit was no longer
• 5:02
Speaker 1: to be seen. She found herself in a long, low hall,
• 5:05
Speaker 1: which was lit up by a row of lamps hanging
• 5:08
Speaker 1: from the roof. There were doors all around the hall,
• 5:11
Speaker 1: but they were all locked, and when Alice had been
• 5:13
Speaker 1: all the way down one side and up the other,
• 5:15
Speaker 1: trying every door, she walked sadly down the middle, wondering
• 5:18
Speaker 1: how she was ever to get out again. Suddenly she
• 5:22
Speaker 1: came upon a little, three legged table, all made of
• 5:25
Speaker 1: solid glass. There was nothing on it except a tiny
• 5:28
Speaker 1: golden key, and Alice's first thought was that it might
• 5:31
Speaker 1: belong to one of the doors of the hall, but
• 5:33
Speaker 1: alas either the locks were too large or the key
• 5:36
Speaker 1: was too small, but at any rate, it would not
• 5:38
Speaker 1: open any of them. However, on the second time round,
• 5:41
Speaker 1: she came upon a low curtain she had not noticed before,
• 5:44
Speaker 1: and behind it was a little door about fifteen inches high.
• 5:48
Speaker 1: She tried the little golden key in the lock, and
• 5:50
Speaker 1: to her great delight it fitted. Alice opened the door
• 5:54
Speaker 1: and found it led into a small passage not much
• 5:57
Speaker 1: larger than a rat hole. She knelt down and looked
• 6:00
Speaker 1: along the passage into the loveliest garden you ever saw.
• 6:04
Speaker 1: How she longed to get out of that dark hall
• 6:06
Speaker 1: and wander about among those beds of bright flowers and
• 6:09
Speaker 1: those cool fountains. But she could not even get her
• 6:12
Speaker 1: head through the doorway. And even if my head would
• 6:14
Speaker 1: go through, thought poor Alice, it would be of very
• 6:17
Speaker 1: little use without my shoulders. Oh how I wish I
• 6:20
Speaker 1: could shut up like a telescope. I think I could,
• 6:23
Speaker 1: if I only know how to begin. For you see,
• 6:26
Speaker 1: so many out of the way things had happened lately
• 6:28
Speaker 1: that Alice had begun to think that very few things, indeed,
• 6:31
Speaker 1: were really impossible. There seemed to be no use in
• 6:34
Speaker 1: waiting by the little door, so she went back to
• 6:36
Speaker 1: the table, half hoping she might find another key on it, or,
• 6:39
Speaker 1: at any rate, a book of rules for shutting people
• 6:42
Speaker 1: up like telescopes. This time she found a little bottle
• 6:45
Speaker 1: on it, which certainly was not here before, said Alice.
• 6:49
Speaker 1: And round the neck of the bottle was a paper
• 6:51
Speaker 1: label with the words drink me beautifully printed on it
• 6:54
Speaker 1: in large letters. It was all very well to say
• 6:57
Speaker 1: drink me, but the wise little Alice was not going
• 6:59
Speaker 1: to do that in a hurry no, I'll look first,
• 7:03
Speaker 1: she said, and see whether it's marked poison or not.
• 7:05
Speaker 1: For she had read several nice little histories about children
• 7:08
Speaker 1: who'd gotten burnt and eaten up by wild beasts and
• 7:11
Speaker 1: other unpleasant things, all because they would not remember the
• 7:14
Speaker 1: simple rules their friends had taught them, such as that
• 7:17
Speaker 1: a red hot poker will burn you if you hold
• 7:19
Speaker 1: it too long, and that if you cut your finger
• 7:21
Speaker 1: very deeply with a knife, it usually bleeds. And she
• 7:24
Speaker 1: had never forgotten that if you'd drink much from a
• 7:26
Speaker 1: bottle marked poison, it's almost certain to disagree with you
• 7:29
Speaker 1: sooner or later. However, this bottle was not marked poison,
• 7:34
Speaker 1: so Alice ventured to taste it, and finding it very nice.
• 7:37
Speaker 1: It had, in fact a sort of mixed flavor of
• 7:40
Speaker 1: cherry tart, custard, pineapple roast, turkey toffee, and hot buttered toast.
• 7:46
Speaker 1: She very soon finished it off. What a curious feeling,
• 7:51
Speaker 1: said Alice. I must be shutting up like a telescope.
• 7:54
Speaker 1: And so it was. Indeed, she was now only ten
• 7:56
Speaker 1: inches high, and her face brightened up at the thought
• 7:59
Speaker 1: that she was now the size for going through the
• 8:01
Speaker 1: little door into that lovely garden. First, however, she waited
• 8:04
Speaker 1: for a few minutes to see if she was going
• 8:06
Speaker 1: to shrink any further. She felt a little nervous about this,
• 8:10
Speaker 1: for at might end, you know, said Alice to herself,
• 8:13
Speaker 1: Am I going out altogether like a candle? I wonder
• 8:16
Speaker 1: what I should be like?
• 8:17
  Speaker 5: Then?
• 8:18
Speaker 1: And she tried to fancy what the flame of a
• 8:19
Speaker 1: candle is like after the candle is blown out, for
• 8:22
Speaker 1: she could not remember having ever seen such a thing.
• 8:25
Speaker 1: After a while, finding that nothing more happened, she decided
• 8:28
Speaker 1: on going into the garden at once. But alas for
• 8:31
Speaker 1: poor Alice, when she got to the door, she found
• 8:33
Speaker 1: she'd forgotten the little golden key, and when she went
• 8:36
Speaker 1: back to the table for it, she found she could
• 8:38
Speaker 1: not possibly reach it. She could see it quite plainly
• 8:41
Speaker 1: through the glass, and she tried her best to climb
• 8:44
Speaker 1: up one of the legs of the table, but it
• 8:46
Speaker 1: was too slippery, And when she had tired herself out
• 8:49
Speaker 1: with trying, the poor little thing sat down and cried.
• 8:53
  Speaker 5: Come.
• 8:53
Speaker 1: There's no use crying like that, said Alice to herself
• 8:57
Speaker 1: rather sharply, I advise you to leave off this In it,
• 9:01
Speaker 1: she generally gave herself very good advice, though she very
• 9:03
Speaker 1: seldom followed it, and sometimes she scolded herself so severely
• 9:07
Speaker 1: as to bring tears into her eyes. She once remembered
• 9:10
Speaker 1: trying to box her own ears for having cheated herself
• 9:12
Speaker 1: in a game of croquet. She was playing against herself.
• 9:15
Speaker 1: For this, curious child was fond of pretending to be
• 9:18
Speaker 1: two people. But it's no use, now, thought poor Alice,
• 9:21
Speaker 1: to pretend to be two people. Why, there's hardly enough
• 9:24
Speaker 1: of me to make one respectable person. Soon her eye
• 9:27
Speaker 1: fell on a little glass box that was lying under
• 9:29
Speaker 1: the table. She opened it and found in it a
• 9:32
Speaker 1: very small cake, on which the words eat me were
• 9:35
Speaker 1: beautifully marked in currants. Well I'll eat it, said Alice.
• 9:40
Speaker 1: And if it makes me grow larger, I can reach
• 9:42
Speaker 1: the key. And if it makes me grow smaller, I
• 9:44
Speaker 1: can creep under the door. So either way I'll get
• 9:47
Speaker 1: into the garden. And I don't care which happens. She
• 9:50
Speaker 1: ate a little bit and said anxiously to herself, which
• 9:54
Speaker 1: way which way, holding her hand on the top of
• 9:57
Speaker 1: her head to feel which way it was growing. I
• 10:00
Speaker 1: was quite surprised to find that she remained the same size.
• 10:03
Speaker 1: To be sure, this generally happens when one needs cake.
• 10:06
Speaker 1: But Alice had gotten so much into the way of
• 10:08
Speaker 1: expecting nothing but out of the way things to happen,
• 10:11
Speaker 1: that it seemed quite dull and stupid for life to
• 10:13
Speaker 1: go on in the common way. So she set to
• 10:15
Speaker 1: work and very soon finished off the cake. End of
• 10:20
  Speaker 1: chapter one.
• 10:21
Speaker 6: Chapter two, the Pool of Tears. Curious Sir, and curious sir,
• 10:27
Speaker 6: cried Alice. She was so much surprised that for the
• 10:30
Speaker 6: moment she quite forgot how to speak good English. Now
• 10:34
Speaker 6: I'm opening out like the largest telescope that ever was.
• 10:37
Speaker 6: Goodbye feet, for when she looked down at her feet,
• 10:41
Speaker 6: they seemed to be almost out of sight. They were
• 10:44
Speaker 6: getting so far off. Oh my poor little feet. I
• 10:48
Speaker 6: wonder who will put on your shoes and stockings for
• 10:50
Speaker 6: you now, tears, I'm sure I shan't be able to.
• 10:54
Speaker 6: I shall be a great deal too far off to
• 10:56
Speaker 6: trouble myself about you. You must manage the best you can.
• 11:01
Speaker 6: But I must be kind to them, thought Alice. Or
• 11:05
Speaker 6: perhaps they won't walk the way I want to go.
• 11:08
Speaker 6: Let me see, I'll give them a new pair of
• 11:09
Speaker 6: boots every Christmas. And she went on planning to herself
• 11:14
Speaker 6: how she should manage it. They must go by carrier,
• 11:17
Speaker 6: she thought, And how funny I'll seem sending presents to
• 11:20
Speaker 6: one's own feet, And how odd the directions will look
• 11:24
Speaker 6: Alice's right foot a squire hearth rug near the fender
• 11:28
Speaker 6: with Alice's love. Oh dear, what nonsense I'm talking. Just
• 11:33
Speaker 6: then her head struck against the roof of the hall.
• 11:37
Speaker 6: In fact, she was now more than nine feet high,
• 11:39
Speaker 6: and she at once took up the little golden key
• 11:42
Speaker 6: and hurried off to the garden door. Poor Alice, it
• 11:47
Speaker 6: was as much as she could do, lying down on
• 11:49
Speaker 6: one side to look through the into the garden with
• 11:53
Speaker 6: one eye, but to get through was more hopeless than ever.
• 11:57
Speaker 6: She sat down and began to cry again. You ought
• 12:01
Speaker 6: to be ashamed of yourself, said Alice. A great girl
• 12:04
Speaker 6: like you, she might well say this, to go on
• 12:08
Speaker 6: crying in this way, stop this moment, I tell you.
• 12:12
Speaker 6: But she went on all the same, shedding gallons of tears,
• 12:15
Speaker 6: until there was a large pool all around her, about
• 12:18
Speaker 6: four inches deep and reaching half down the hall. After
• 12:22
Speaker 6: a time, she heard a little pattering of feet in
• 12:25
Speaker 6: the distance, and she hastily dried her eyes to see
• 12:27
Speaker 6: what was coming. It was the white rabbit returning, splendidly
• 12:31
Speaker 6: dressed with a pair of white kid gloves in one
• 12:34
Speaker 6: hand and a large fan in the other. He came
• 12:37
Speaker 6: trotting along in a great hurry, muttering to himself as
• 12:40
Speaker 6: he came. Oh, the duchess, the duchess, Oh, won't she
• 12:44
Speaker 6: be savage if I've kept her waiting. Alice felt so
• 12:48
Speaker 6: desperate that she was ready to ask help of any one,
• 12:51
Speaker 6: So when the rabbit came near her, she began, in
• 12:53
Speaker 6: a low, timid voice, if you please, sir. The rabbit
• 12:57
Speaker 6: started violently, dropped the white kid gloves and the fan,
• 13:01
Speaker 6: and scurried away into the darkness as hard as he
• 13:04
Speaker 6: could go. Alice took up the fan and gloves, and
• 13:09
Speaker 6: as the hall was very hot, she kept fanning herself
• 13:12
Speaker 6: All the time. She went on talking, dear, dear, how
• 13:16
Speaker 6: queer everything is today? And yesterday things went on just
• 13:19
Speaker 6: as usual. I wonder if I've been changed in the night.
• 13:23
Speaker 6: Let me think, was I the same when I got
• 13:26
Speaker 6: up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling
• 13:29
Speaker 6: a little different. But if I'm not the same, the
• 13:32
Speaker 6: next question is who in the world am I? Ah,
• 13:36
Speaker 6: that's the great puzzle, and she began thinking over all
• 13:40
Speaker 6: the children that she knew that were of the same
• 13:42
Speaker 6: age as herself, to see if she could have been
• 13:44
Speaker 6: changed for any of them. I'm sure I'm not Ada,
• 13:48
Speaker 6: she said, for her hair goes in such long ringlets,
• 13:51
Speaker 6: and mine doesn't go in ringlets at all. And I'm
• 13:55
Speaker 6: sure I can't be Mabel, for I know all sorts
• 13:58
Speaker 6: of things. And she, oh, she knows such a very
• 14:02
Speaker 6: little besides she she and I'm I and oh dear,
• 14:06
Speaker 6: how puzzling it all is. I'll try if I know
• 14:10
Speaker 6: all the things I used to know. Let me see,
• 14:14
Speaker 6: four times five is twelve, and four times six is thirteen,
• 14:19
Speaker 6: and four times seven is Oh dear, I shall never
• 14:23
Speaker 6: get to twenty at that rate. However, the multiplication table
• 14:27
Speaker 6: doesn't signify. Let's try geography. London is the capital of Paris,
• 14:33
Speaker 6: and Paris is the capital of Rome, and Rome. No,
• 14:37
Speaker 6: that's all wrong. I'm certain I must have been changed
• 14:40
Speaker 6: for Mabel. I'll try and say, how doth the little
• 14:44
Speaker 6: And she crossed her hands on her lap as if
• 14:46
Speaker 6: she were saying lessons, and began repeat it. But her
• 14:50
Speaker 6: voice sounded hoarse and strange, and the words did not
• 14:52
Speaker 6: come the same as they used to. How doth the
• 14:56
Speaker 6: little crocodile improve his shining tail and pour the waters
• 15:00
Speaker 6: of the nile on every golden scale, How cheerfully he
• 15:05
Speaker 6: seems to grin, how neatly spread his claws and welcome
• 15:09
Speaker 6: little fishes in with gently smiling jaws. I'm sure those
• 15:13
Speaker 6: are not the right words, said poor Alice, and her
• 15:16
Speaker 6: eyes filled with tears again as she went on, I
• 15:19
Speaker 6: must be Mabel after all, and I shall have to
• 15:22
Speaker 6: go and live in that poky little house and have
• 15:25
Speaker 6: next to no toys to play with, and oh, ever,
• 15:28
Speaker 6: so many lessons to learn. No, I've made up my
• 15:31
Speaker 6: mind about it. If I'm Mabel, I'll stay down here.
• 15:34
Speaker 6: It'll be no use. They're putting their heads down and
• 15:37
Speaker 6: saying come up again, dear. I shall only look up
• 15:41
Speaker 6: and say who am I? Then tell me that first,
• 15:45
Speaker 6: and then if I like being that person, I'll come up.
• 15:48
Speaker 6: If not, I'll stay down here till I'm somebody else.
• 15:52
Speaker 6: But oh, dear, cried Alice with a sudden burst of tears.
• 15:56
Speaker 6: I do wish they would put their heads down. I
• 15:59
Speaker 6: am so very tired of being all alone here. As
• 16:02
Speaker 6: she said this, she looked down at her hands and
• 16:05
Speaker 6: was surprised to see that she had put on one
• 16:08
Speaker 6: of the rabbit's little white kid gloves while she was talking.
• 16:12
Speaker 6: How can I have done that?
• 16:13
  Speaker 7: She thought?
• 16:14
Speaker 6: I must be growing small again. She got up and
• 16:17
Speaker 6: went to the table to measure herself by it, and
• 16:20
Speaker 6: found that as nearly as she could guess, she was
• 16:22
Speaker 6: now about two feet high, and was going on shrinking rapidly.
• 16:26
Speaker 6: She soon found out that the cause of this was
• 16:29
Speaker 6: the fan that she was holding, and she dropped it hastily,
• 16:32
Speaker 6: just in time to avoid shrinking away altogether. That was
• 16:37
Speaker 6: a narrow escape, said Alice, a good deal frightened at
• 16:40
Speaker 6: the sudden change, but very glad to find herself still
• 16:44
Speaker 6: in existence. And now for the garden, and she ran
• 16:47
Speaker 6: with all speed back to the little door. But alas
• 16:50
Speaker 6: the door was shut again, and the little golden key
• 16:53
Speaker 6: was lying on the glass table as before. And things
• 16:56
Speaker 6: are worse than ever thought the poor child. For I
• 17:00
Speaker 6: ever was so small as this before, never, And I
• 17:04
Speaker 6: declare it's too bad that it is. As she said
• 17:08
Speaker 6: these words, her foot slipped, and another moment, splash, she
• 17:11
Speaker 6: was up to her chin in salt water. Her first
• 17:14
Speaker 6: idea was that she had somehow fallen into the sea,
• 17:17
Speaker 6: and in that case I can go back by railway,
• 17:20
Speaker 6: she said to herself. Alice had been to the seaside
• 17:23
Speaker 6: once in her life that could come to the general
• 17:26
Speaker 6: conclusion that wherever you go on the English coast, you
• 17:29
Speaker 6: find a number of bathing machines in the sea, some
• 17:32
Speaker 6: children digging in the sand with wooden spades, then a
• 17:35
Speaker 6: row of lodging houses, and behind them a railway station. However,
• 17:40
Speaker 6: she soon made out that she was in a pool
• 17:42
Speaker 6: of tears, which she had wept when she was nine
• 17:44
Speaker 6: feet high. I wish I hadn't cried so much, said Alice,
• 17:49
Speaker 6: as she swam about trying to find her way out.
• 17:52
Speaker 6: I shall be punished for it now, I suppose, by
• 17:55
Speaker 6: being drowned in my own tears, that will be a
• 17:58
Speaker 6: queer thing, to be sure. However, everything is queer today.
• 18:03
Speaker 6: Just then she heard something splash about in the pool
• 18:06
Speaker 6: a little way off, and she swam nearer to make
• 18:09
Speaker 6: out what it was. At first she thought it must
• 18:11
Speaker 6: be a walrus or hippopotamus, but then she remembered how
• 18:15
Speaker 6: small she was now, and she soon made out that
• 18:18
Speaker 6: it was only a mouse that had slipped in like herself.
• 18:22
Speaker 6: Would it be of any use now, thought Alice to
• 18:25
Speaker 6: speak to this mouse. Everything is so out of the
• 18:29
Speaker 6: way down here that I should think very likely it
• 18:33
Speaker 6: can talk at any rate. There's no harm in trying,
• 18:36
Speaker 6: So she began, Oh mouse, do you know the way
• 18:39
Speaker 6: out of this pool? I am very tired of swimming
• 18:42
Speaker 6: about here? Oh mouse, Alice thought this must be the
• 18:47
Speaker 6: right way of speaking to a mouse. She had never
• 18:49
Speaker 6: done such a thing before, but she remembered having seen
• 18:52
Speaker 6: her brother's Latin grammar A mouse of a mouse to
• 18:56
Speaker 6: a mouse, a mouse o mouse. The mouse looked at
• 19:00
Speaker 6: her rather inquisitively, and seemed to her to wink with
• 19:04
Speaker 6: one of its little eyes. But it said nothing. Perhaps
• 19:08
Speaker 6: it doesn't understand English, thought Alice. I dare say it's
• 19:12
Speaker 6: a French mouse. Come over with William the Conqueror. With
• 19:15
Speaker 6: all her knowledge of history, Alice had no clear notion
• 19:19
Speaker 6: how long ago anything had happened, So she began again
• 19:23
Speaker 6: whiz monschat, which was the first sentence in her French
• 19:27
Speaker 6: Lesson book. The mouse gave a sudden leap out of
• 19:30
Speaker 6: the water and seemed to quiver all over with fright. Oh,
• 19:33
Speaker 6: I beg your pardon, cried Alice, hastily, afraid that she
• 19:36
Speaker 6: had hurt the poor animal's feelings. I quite forgot. You
• 19:40
Speaker 6: don't like cats. Not like cats, cried the mouse in
• 19:44
Speaker 6: a shrill, passionate voice. Would you like cats if you
• 19:47
Speaker 6: were me? Well, perhaps not, said Alice in a soothing tone.
• 19:51
Speaker 6: Don't be angry about it. And yet I wish I
• 19:54
Speaker 6: could show you our cat Dinah. I think you'd take
• 19:57
Speaker 6: a fancy to cats if you could only see her.
• 20:00
Speaker 6: She's such a dear, quiet thing, Alice went on, half
• 20:03
Speaker 6: to herself, as she swam lazily about in the pool.
• 20:06
Speaker 6: And she sits purring so nicely by the fire, licking
• 20:09
Speaker 6: her paws and washing her face. And she is such
• 20:12
Speaker 6: a nice soft thing to nurse. And she's such a
• 20:14
Speaker 6: capital one for catching mice. Oh, I beg your pardon,
• 20:18
Speaker 6: cried Alice again. For this time the mouse was bristling
• 20:20
Speaker 6: all over, and she felt certain it must be really offended.
• 20:24
Speaker 6: We won't talk about her anymore if you'd rather not,
• 20:28
Speaker 6: we indeed, cried the mouse, who was trembling down to
• 20:31
Speaker 6: the end of his tail, As if I would talk
• 20:34
Speaker 6: on such a subject. Our family always hated cats, nasty,
• 20:39
Speaker 6: low vulguar things. Don't let me hear the name again.
• 20:44
Speaker 6: I won't, indeed, said Alice, in a great hurry to
• 20:47
Speaker 6: change the subject conversation. And you are you fond of dogs?
• 20:54
Speaker 6: The mouse did not answer, so Alice went on eagerly.
• 20:58
Speaker 6: There is such a nice little dog near our I
• 21:00
Speaker 6: should like to show you a little bright eyed terry,
• 21:03
Speaker 6: you know, with oh, such long curly brown hair, And
• 21:06
Speaker 6: it'll fetch things when you throw them, and it'll sit
• 21:09
Speaker 6: up and beg for its dinner, and all sorts of things.
• 21:11
Speaker 6: I can't remember half of them. And it belongs to
• 21:14
Speaker 6: a farmer, you know. And he says it's so useful,
• 21:17
Speaker 6: it's worth a hundred pounds. He says it kills all
• 21:20
Speaker 6: the rats. And oh, dear, cried Alice in a sorrowful tone,
• 21:24
Speaker 6: I'm afraid I've offended again. For the mouse was swimming
• 21:28
Speaker 6: away from her as hard as it could go, and
• 21:30
Speaker 6: making quite a commotion in the pool as it went.
• 21:34
Speaker 6: So she called softly after it, mouse, dear, do come
• 21:37
Speaker 6: back again. And I won't talk about cats or dogs either,
• 21:40
Speaker 6: if you don't like them. When the mouse heard this,
• 21:43
Speaker 6: it turned round and swam slowly back to her. Its
• 21:46
Speaker 6: face was quite pale with passion. Alice thought, and it said,
• 21:50
Speaker 6: in a low trembling voice, let us get to the shore,
• 21:54
Speaker 6: and then I'll tell you my history, and you'll understand
• 21:57
Speaker 6: why it is that I hate cats and all. It
• 22:01
Speaker 6: was high time to go, for the pool was getting
• 22:03
Speaker 6: quite crowded with birds and animals that had fallen into it.
• 22:06
Speaker 6: There was a duck and a dodo, a lory and
• 22:09
Speaker 6: an eglet, and several other curious creatures. Alice led the way,
• 22:14
Speaker 6: and the whole party swam to the shore end of chapter.
• 22:18
Speaker 5: Two, chapter three, a caucus race and a long tail.
• 22:29
Speaker 5: They were indeed a queer looking party that assembled on
• 22:35
Speaker 5: the bank. The birds with draggled feathers, the animals with
• 22:41
Speaker 5: their fur clinging close to them, and all dripping, wet,
• 22:47
Speaker 5: cross and uncomfortable. The first question, of course, was how
• 22:55
Speaker 5: to get dry again. They had a consultation about this,
• 23:01
Speaker 5: and after a few minutes it seemed quite natural to
• 23:05
Speaker 5: Alice to find herself talking familiarly with them, as if
• 23:12
Speaker 5: she had known them all her life. Indeed, she had
• 23:17
Speaker 5: quite a long argument with the lory, who at last
• 23:22
Speaker 5: turned sulky and would only say, I am older than you,
• 23:29
Speaker 5: and must know better, and this Alice would not allow
• 23:35
Speaker 5: without knowing how old it was. And as the lry
• 23:42
Speaker 5: positively refused to tell its age, there was no more
• 23:47
Speaker 5: to be said. At last, the mouse, who seemed to
• 23:54
Speaker 5: be a person of authority among them, called out, sit down,
• 24:00
Speaker 5: all of you and listen to me. I'll soon make
• 24:05
Speaker 5: you dry enough. They all sat down at once in
• 24:10
Speaker 5: a large ring, with the mouse in the middle. Alice
• 24:16
Speaker 5: kept her eyes anxiously fixed on it, for she felt
• 24:22
Speaker 5: sure she would catch a bad cold if she did
• 24:26
Speaker 5: not get dry very soon. Ahem, said the mouse, with
• 24:33
Speaker 5: an important air. Are you already? This is the driest
• 24:40
Speaker 5: thing I know. Silence all around, if you please. William
• 24:47
Speaker 5: the conqueror, whose cause was favored by the Pope, was
• 24:52
Speaker 5: soon submitted to by the English, who wanted leaders and
• 24:58
Speaker 5: had been of late much accustomed to usurpation, and conquest
• 25:05
Speaker 5: Edwin and Morcar, the earls of Mercia and Northumbria. Uugh,
• 25:13
Speaker 5: said the lorry with a shiver. I beg your pardon,
• 25:17
Speaker 5: said the mouse, frowning, but very politely. Did you speak not,
• 25:25
Speaker 5: I said the lory hastily. I thought you did, said
• 25:31
Speaker 5: the mouse. I proceed Edwin and Morcar, The earls of
• 25:40
Speaker 5: Mercia and Northumbria declared for him, and even Stigand the
• 25:47
Speaker 5: patriotic Archbishop of Canterbury found it advisable. Found what, said
• 25:56
Speaker 5: the duck? Found it? The mouse replied, rather crossly. Of
• 26:03
Speaker 5: course you know what it means. I know what it
• 26:09
Speaker 5: means well enough. When I find a thing, said the duck,
• 26:15
Speaker 5: It's generally a frog or a worm. The question is
• 26:22
Speaker 5: what did the archbishop find? The mouse did not notice
• 26:28
Speaker 5: this question, but hurriedly went on. Found it advisable to
• 26:37
Speaker 5: go with Edgar Etheling to meet William and offer him
• 26:43
Speaker 5: the crown. William's conduct was at first moderate, but the
• 26:50
Speaker 5: insolence of his normans how are you getting on now,
• 26:55
Speaker 5: my dear, it continued, turning to Alice as it spoke.
• 27:03
Speaker 5: As wet as ever, said Alice, in a melancholy tone.
• 27:08
Speaker 5: It doesn't seem to dry me at all in that case,
• 27:15
Speaker 5: said the Dodo, solemnly, rising to its feet. I moved
• 27:21
Speaker 5: that the meeting adjourn for the immediate adoption of more
• 27:26
Speaker 5: energetic remedies. Speak English, said the eaglet. I don't know
• 27:33
Speaker 5: the meaning of half those long words, and what's more,
• 27:39
Speaker 5: I don't believe you do either, and the eaglet bent
• 27:44
Speaker 5: down its head to hide a smile. Some of the
• 27:49
Speaker 5: other birds tittered audibly. What I was going to say,
• 27:56
Speaker 5: said the Dodo, in an offended tone, was that the
• 28:02
Speaker 5: best thing is to get us dry would be a
• 28:07
Speaker 5: caucus race. What is a caucus race? Said Alice, not
• 28:15
Speaker 5: that she wanted much to know. But the Dodo had paused,
• 28:21
Speaker 5: as if it thought that somebody ought to speak, and
• 28:27
Speaker 5: no one else seemed inclined to say anything. Why, said
• 28:34
Speaker 5: the Dodo, The best way to explain it is to
• 28:39
Speaker 5: do it. And you might like to try the thing
• 28:44
Speaker 5: yourself some winter day. I will tell you how the
• 28:49
Speaker 5: Dodo managed it. First it marked out a race course
• 28:56
Speaker 5: in a sort of circle. The exact shape doesn't matter,
• 29:02
Speaker 5: it said, And then all the party were placed along
• 29:08
Speaker 5: the course. Here and there. There was no one, two, three,
• 29:16
Speaker 5: and away. But they began running when they liked and
• 29:22
Speaker 5: left off when they liked, so that it was not
• 29:26
Speaker 5: easy to know when the race was over. However, when
• 29:32
Speaker 5: they had been running half an hour or so and
• 29:35
Speaker 5: were quite dry again, the Dodo suddenly called out the
• 29:41
Speaker 5: race is over, and they all crowded round it, panting
• 29:45
Speaker 5: and asking, But who has won? This question the Dodo
• 29:52
Speaker 5: could not answer without a great deal of thought, and
• 29:57
Speaker 5: it sat for a long time with one finger pressed
• 30:02
Speaker 5: upon its forehead, the position in which you usually see
• 30:07
Speaker 5: Shakespeare in the pictures of him, while the rest waited
• 30:11
Speaker 5: in silence. At last, the Dodo said, everybody has won,
• 30:19
Speaker 5: and all must have prizes. But who is to give
• 30:25
Speaker 5: the prizes? Quite a chorus of voices asked why she,
• 30:32
Speaker 5: of course, said the Dodo, pointing to Alice with one finger,
• 30:38
Speaker 5: and the whole party at once crowded round her, calling
• 30:43
Speaker 5: out in a confused way, prizes, prizes. Alice had no
• 30:51
Speaker 5: idea what to do, and in despair, she put her
• 30:56
Speaker 5: hand in her pocket and pulled out a box of comfits,
• 31:03
Speaker 5: luckily the salt water had not got into it, and
• 31:08
Speaker 5: handed them round as prizes. There was exactly one a
• 31:14
Speaker 5: piece all round. But she should but she must have
• 31:21
Speaker 5: a prize herself, you know, said the mouse. Of course,
• 31:27
Speaker 5: the Dodo replied, very gravely. What else have you got
• 31:32
Speaker 5: in your pocket? He went on, turning to Alice, Only
• 31:37
Speaker 5: a thimble, said Alice. Sadly, hand it over here, said
• 31:43
Speaker 5: the Dodo. Then they all crowded round her once more,
• 31:50
Speaker 5: while the dodo solemnly presented the thimble, saying, we beg
• 31:56
Speaker 5: your acceptance of this elegant thimble. And when it had
• 32:02
Speaker 5: finished this short speech, they all cheered. Alice thought the
• 32:11
Speaker 5: whole thing very absurd, but they all looked so grave
• 32:16
Speaker 5: that she did not dare to laugh, And as she
• 32:20
Speaker 5: could not think of anything to say, she simply bowed
• 32:26
Speaker 5: and took the thimble, looking as solemn as she could.
• 32:32
Speaker 5: The next thing was to eat the comfits. This caused
• 32:37
Speaker 5: some noise and confusion, as the large birds complained that
• 32:43
Speaker 5: they could not taste theirs, and the small ones choked
• 32:48
Speaker 5: and had to be petted on the back. However, it
• 32:53
Speaker 5: was over at last, and they sat down again in
• 32:56
Speaker 5: a ring and begged the mouse to tell them something more.
• 33:04
Speaker 5: You promised to tell me your history, you know, said Alice.
• 33:09
Speaker 5: And why it is you hate C and D she
• 33:14
Speaker 5: added in a whisper, half afraid that it would be
• 33:18
Speaker 5: offended again. Mine is a long and a sad tale,
• 33:25
Speaker 5: said the mouse, turning to Alice and sighing. It is
• 33:32
Speaker 5: a long tale, certainly, said Alice, looking down with wonder
• 33:37
Speaker 5: at the mouse's tail. But why do you call it sad?
• 33:44
Speaker 5: And she kept on puzzling about it while the mouse
• 33:48
Speaker 5: was speaking, so that her idea of the tale was
• 33:53
Speaker 5: something like this. Here the words are written on the
• 33:58
Speaker 5: page one two four on a line, and the lines
• 34:05
Speaker 5: are off set, so they snake down the page in
• 34:09
Speaker 5: a wavy fashion. And here's what they say. Fury said
• 34:16
Speaker 5: to a mouse that he met in the house. Let
• 34:21
Speaker 5: us both go to law. I will prosecute you. Come.
• 34:29
Speaker 5: I'll take no denial. We must have a trial, for
• 34:35
Speaker 5: really this morning, I've nothing to do, said the mouse
• 34:41
Speaker 5: to the cur Such a trial, dear sir, with no
• 34:47
Speaker 5: jury or judge, would be wasting our breath. I'll be judge.
• 34:54
Speaker 5: I'll be jury, said cunning old Fury. I'll drive a
• 35:00
Speaker 5: whole cause and condemn you to death. And there's where
• 35:07
Speaker 5: the snaky text ends, continuing, you are not attending, said
• 35:14
Speaker 5: the mouse to Alice severely. What are you thinking of?
• 35:20
Speaker 5: I beg your pardon, said Alice, very humbly. You had
• 35:26
Speaker 5: got to the fifth bend I think I had not,
• 35:32
Speaker 5: cried the mouse, sharply and very angrily. A knot, said Alice,
• 35:39
Speaker 5: always ready to make herself useful, and looking anxiously about her. Oh,
• 35:45
Speaker 5: do let me help to undo it. I shall do
• 35:50
Speaker 5: nothing of the sort, said the mouse, getting up and
• 35:54
Speaker 5: walking away. You insult me by talking such nonsense. I
• 36:00
Speaker 5: didn't mean it, pleaded poor Alice. But you're so easily offended,
• 36:06
Speaker 5: you know. The mouse only growled in reply. Please come
• 36:13
Speaker 5: back and finish your story, Alice called after it, and
• 36:19
Speaker 5: the others all joined in chorus, Yes, please do. But
• 36:25
Speaker 5: the mouse only shook its head impatiently and walked a
• 36:29
Speaker 5: little quicker. What a pity it wouldn't stay, sighed the lorry,
• 36:34
Speaker 5: as soon as it was quite out of sight, and
• 36:38
Speaker 5: an old crab took the opportunity of saying to her daughter, ah,
• 36:44
Speaker 5: my dear, let this be a lesson to you never
• 36:49
Speaker 5: to lose your temper hold your tongue. Ma, said the
• 36:54
Speaker 5: young crab a little snappishly. You're enough to try the
• 36:58
Speaker 5: patience of an oyster. Oh I wish I had our
• 37:04
Speaker 5: Dinah here, I know I do, said Alice aloud, addressing
• 37:08
Speaker 5: nobody in particular. She'd soon fetch it back. And who
• 37:15
Speaker 5: is Dinah? If I might venture to ask the question?
• 37:19
Speaker 5: Said the lory. Alice replied eagerly, for she was always
• 37:25
Speaker 5: ready to talk about her pet. Dinah's our cat, and
• 37:31
Speaker 5: she's such a capital one for catching mice, you can't think.
• 37:36
Speaker 5: And oh, I wish you could see her after the birds.
• 37:40
Speaker 5: Why she'll eat a little bird as soon as look
• 37:44
Speaker 5: at it. This speech caused a remarkable sensation among the party.
• 37:53
Speaker 5: Some of the birds hurried off at once. One old
• 37:57
Speaker 5: magpie began wrapping itself up, very very carefully, remarking, I
• 38:02
Speaker 5: really must be getting home. The night air doesn't suit
• 38:07
Speaker 5: my throat. And a canary called out in a trembling
• 38:11
Speaker 5: voice to its children, Come away, my DearS, it's high
• 38:17
Speaker 5: time you were all in bed. On various pretexts, they
• 38:23
Speaker 5: all moved off, and Alice was soon left alone. Oh
• 38:30
Speaker 5: I wish I hadn't mentioned Dinah, she said to herself
• 38:34
Speaker 5: in a melancholy tone. Nobody seems to like her down here,
• 38:41
Speaker 5: and I'm sure she's the best cat in the world. Oh,
• 38:45
Speaker 5: my dear Dinah, I wonder if I shall ever see
• 38:50
Speaker 5: you anymore. And here poor Alice began to cry again,
• 38:56
Speaker 5: for she felt very lonely and low spirited. In a
• 39:01
Speaker 5: little while, however, she again heard a little pattering of
• 39:05
Speaker 5: footsteps in the distance, and she looked up eagerly, half
• 39:11
Speaker 5: hoping that the mouse had changed his mind and was
• 39:16
Speaker 5: coming back to finish his story. This is the end
• 39:24
  Speaker 5: of chapter three.
• 39:26
Speaker 8: Chapter four, the rabbit sends in a little bill. It
• 39:34
Speaker 8: was the white rabbit, trotting slowly back again and looking
• 39:39
Speaker 8: anxiously about as it went, as if it had lost something,
• 39:44
Speaker 8: And she heard it muttering to itself, the duchess, the duchess,
• 39:49
Speaker 8: and my dear pause, oh, my fur and whiskers. She'll
• 39:53
Speaker 8: get me executed as sure as ferrets are ferrets. Where
• 39:58
Speaker 8: can I have dropped them?
• 40:00
  Speaker 9: I wonder?
• 40:02
Speaker 8: Alice guessed in a moment that it was looking for
• 40:06
Speaker 8: the fan and the pair of white kid gloves, and
• 40:10
Speaker 8: she very good naturedly began hunting about for them, but
• 40:15
Speaker 8: they were nowhere to be seen. Everything seemed to have
• 40:19
Speaker 8: changed since her swim in the pool, and the great
• 40:22
Speaker 8: hall with the glass table and the little door had
• 40:25
Speaker 8: vanished completely. Very soon, the rabbit noticed Alice as she
• 40:33
Speaker 8: went hunting about, and called out to her in an
• 40:36
Speaker 8: angry tone, Why Mary Anne, what are you doing out here?
• 40:41
Speaker 8: Run home this moment and fetch me a pair of
• 40:43
Speaker 8: gloves and a fan quick now. And Alice was so
• 40:48
Speaker 8: much frightened that she ran off at once in the
• 40:50
Speaker 8: direction it pointed to, without trying to explain the mistake
• 40:54
Speaker 8: it had made. He took me for his hand smith,
• 41:00
Speaker 8: she said to herself as she ran, How surprised he'll
• 41:04
Speaker 8: be when he finds out who I am. But I'd
• 41:06
Speaker 8: better take him his fun and gloves, that is, if
• 41:09
Speaker 8: I can find them. As she said this, she came
• 41:14
Speaker 8: upon a neat little house, on the door of which
• 41:16
Speaker 8: was a bright brass plate with the name W Rabbit
• 41:22
Speaker 8: engraved upon it. She went in without knocking and hurried
• 41:26
Speaker 8: upstairs in great fear lest she should meet the real
• 41:30
Speaker 8: Mary Anne and be turned out of the house before
• 41:34
Speaker 8: she had found the fan and gloves. How queer it seems,
• 41:40
Speaker 8: Alice said to herself to be going messages for a rabbit.
• 41:45
Speaker 8: I suppose Dianah will be sending me out on messages next,
• 41:50
Speaker 8: And she began fancying the sort of thing that would happen.
• 41:54
Speaker 8: Miss Alice, come here directly and get ready for your
• 41:56
Speaker 8: walk coming in a minute, nurse. But I've got to
• 42:00
Speaker 8: see that the mouse doesn't get out. Only I don't think.
• 42:05
Speaker 8: Alice went on that they'd let Dinah stop in the
• 42:08
Speaker 8: house if it began ordering people about like that. By
• 42:14
Speaker 8: this time, she had found her way into a tidy
• 42:16
Speaker 8: little room with a table in the window and on it,
• 42:20
Speaker 8: as she had hoped, a fan, and two or three
• 42:24
Speaker 8: pairs of tiny white kid gloves. She took up the
• 42:28
Speaker 8: fun a pair of the gloves, and was just going
• 42:31
Speaker 8: to leave the room when her eyes fell upon a
• 42:34
Speaker 8: little bottle that stood near the looking glass. There was
• 42:39
Speaker 8: no label this time with the words drink me, but
• 42:43
Speaker 8: nevertheless she uncorked it and put it to her lips.
• 42:48
Speaker 8: I know something interesting is sure to happen, she said
• 42:52
Speaker 8: to herself, whenever I eat or drink anything. So I'll
• 42:56
Speaker 8: just see what this bottle does. I do hope it'll
• 42:58
Speaker 8: make me grow large again, for really, I'm quite tired
• 43:01
Speaker 8: of being such a tiny little thing. It did so, indeed,
• 43:08
Speaker 8: and much sooner than she had expected. Before she had
• 43:12
Speaker 8: drunk half the bottle, she found her head pressing against
• 43:16
Speaker 8: the ceiling and had to stoop to save her neck
• 43:19
Speaker 8: from being broken. She hastily put down the bottle, saying
• 43:24
  Speaker 8: to herself, that's quite enough. I hope I shan't grow
• 43:28
Speaker 8: any more. As it is, I can't get out at
• 43:30
Speaker 8: the door. I do wish I hadn't drunk quite so much.
• 43:36
Speaker 8: Alas it was too late to wish that. She went
• 43:41
Speaker 8: on growing and growing, and very soon had to kneel
• 43:46
Speaker 8: down on the floor. In another minute, there was not
• 43:49
Speaker 8: even room for this, and she tried the effect of
• 43:52
Speaker 8: lying down with one elbow against the door and the
• 43:55
Speaker 8: other arm curled round her head. Still she went on,
• 44:00
Speaker 8: and as a last resource, she put one arm out
• 44:04
Speaker 8: the window and one foot up the chimney, and said
• 44:08
Speaker 8: to herself, now I can do no more. Whatever happens,
• 44:12
Speaker 8: what will become of me. Luckily for Alice, the little
• 44:18
Speaker 8: magic bottle had now had its full effect, and she
• 44:22
Speaker 8: grew no larger. Still, it was very uncomfortable, and as
• 44:28
Speaker 8: there seemed to be no sort of chance of her
• 44:30
Speaker 8: ever getting out of the room again, no wonder she
• 44:34
Speaker 8: felt unhappy. It was much pleasanter at home, thought poor Alice,
• 44:41
Speaker 8: when one wasn't always growing larger and smaller and being
• 44:45
Speaker 8: ordered about by mice and rabbits. I almost wish I
• 44:50
Speaker 8: hadn't gone down that rabbit hole. And yet, and yet
• 44:54
Speaker 8: it's rather curious, you know, this sort of life. I
• 44:59
Speaker 8: do wonder what can have happened to me? When I
• 45:03
Speaker 8: used to read fairy tales. I fancied that kind of
• 45:06
Speaker 8: thing never happened, And now here I am in the
• 45:09
Speaker 8: middle of one. There ought to be a book written
• 45:12
Speaker 8: about me. That there ought, And when I grow up,
• 45:15
Speaker 8: I'll write one. But I'm grown up now, she added
• 45:20
Speaker 8: in a sorrowful tone. At least there's no room to
• 45:23
Speaker 8: grow up any more here. But then thought Alice, shall
• 45:31
Speaker 8: I never get any older than I am? Now that'll
• 45:36
Speaker 8: be a comfort one way, never to be an old woman,
• 45:39
Speaker 8: but then always to have lessons to learn. Oh I
• 45:44
Speaker 8: shouldn't like that. Oh, you foolish Alice, she answered herself.
• 45:51
Speaker 8: How can you learn lessons in here?
• 45:53
  Speaker 2: Why?
• 45:53
Speaker 8: There's hardly room for you, and no room at all
• 45:56
Speaker 8: for any lesson books. And so she went on, taking
• 46:01
Speaker 8: first one side, then the other, and making quite a
• 46:05
Speaker 8: conversation of it altogether. But after a few minutes she
• 46:09
Speaker 8: heard a voice outside and stopped to listen mary Anne.
• 46:14
Speaker 8: Mary Anne said the voice, fetch me my gloves this
• 46:17
Speaker 8: moment then came a little pattering of feet on the stairs.
• 46:22
Speaker 8: Alice knew it was the rabbit coming to look for her,
• 46:26
Speaker 8: and she trembled till she shook the house quite forgetting
• 46:29
Speaker 8: that she was now about a thousand times as large
• 46:32
Speaker 8: as the rabbit, and had no reason to be afraid
• 46:35
Speaker 8: of it. Presently, the rabbit came up to the door
• 46:40
Speaker 8: and tried to open it, But as the door opened
• 46:44
Speaker 8: inwards and Alice's elbow was pressed hard against it, that
• 46:49
Speaker 8: attempt proved a failure. Alice heard it say to itself.
• 46:56
Speaker 8: Then I'll go round and get in at the window.
• 47:01
Speaker 8: That you won't, thought Alice, And after waiting till she fancied,
• 47:06
Speaker 8: she heard the rabbit just under the window. She suddenly
• 47:10
Speaker 8: spread out her hand and made a snatch in the air.
• 47:15
Speaker 8: She did not get hold of anything, but she heard
• 47:17
Speaker 8: a little shriek and a fall and a crash of
• 47:20
Speaker 8: broken glass, from which she concluded that it was just
• 47:24
Speaker 8: possible it had fallen into a cucumber frame or something
• 47:27
Speaker 8: of the sort. Next came an angry voice the rabbits, Pat, Pat,
• 47:36
Speaker 8: where are you? And then the voice she had never
• 47:40
Speaker 8: heard before. Sure, then I'm here digging for apples, your honor,
• 47:46
Speaker 8: digging for apples, indeed, said the rabbit angrily. Here, come
• 47:52
Speaker 8: and help me out of this. Sounds of more broken glass.
• 47:58
Speaker 8: Now tell me, Pat, what's that in the window? Sure,
• 48:02
Speaker 8: it's an arm, your honor, he pronounced it arum an arm,
• 48:08
Speaker 8: you goose? Who ever saw one that size? Why it
• 48:12
Speaker 8: fills the whole window. Sure it does, your honor, but
• 48:16
Speaker 8: it's an arm for all that. Well, it's got no
• 48:21
Speaker 8: business there at any rate. Go and take it away.
• 48:25
Speaker 8: There was a long silence after this, and Alice could
• 48:29
Speaker 8: only hear whispers now and then, such as, sure I
• 48:33
Speaker 8: don't like it your honor at all at all. Do
• 48:37
Speaker 8: as I tell you, you coward. And at last she spread
• 48:40
Speaker 8: out her hand again and made another snatch in the air.
• 48:44
Speaker 8: This time there were two little shrieks and more sounds
• 48:48
Speaker 8: of broken glass. What a number of cucumber frames there
• 48:53
Speaker 8: must be, thought Alice. I wonder what they'll do next.
• 48:58
Speaker 8: As for pulling me out of the window, I only
• 49:01
Speaker 8: wish they could. I'm sure I don't want to stay
• 49:04
Speaker 8: in here any longer. She waited for some time without
• 49:10
Speaker 8: hearing anything more. At last came a rumbling of little
• 49:14
Speaker 8: cart wheels and the sound of a good many voices,
• 49:18
Speaker 8: all talking together. She made out the words where's the
• 49:23
Speaker 8: other ladder? Why I hadn't thought to bring but one
• 49:26
Speaker 8: bill's got the other bill?
• 49:29
  Speaker 4: Fetch it here?
• 49:30
Speaker 8: Lad he have put em up at the corner, no
• 49:34
Speaker 8: time together. First, they don't reach half high enough yet,
• 49:38
Speaker 8: Oh they'll do well enough. Don't be particular. Here, Bill,
• 49:43
Speaker 8: catch hold of this rope? Will the roof break? Mind
• 49:48
Speaker 8: that loose slat? I it's coming down heads below A
• 49:53
Speaker 8: loud crush. Now who did that? It was Bill? I
• 49:57
Speaker 8: fancy who's to go down the chimne? Nay, I sha'n't
• 50:02
  Speaker 8: you do it?
• 50:04
  Speaker 5: That?
• 50:04
Speaker 8: I won't. Then Bill's to go down here. Bill, the
• 50:08
Speaker 8: master says you're to go down the chimney. Oh so
• 50:14
Speaker 8: Bill's got to come down the chimney. How's he said
• 50:18
Speaker 8: Alice to herself, Shay, they seemed to put everything upon Bill.
• 50:24
  Speaker 8: I wouldn't be in Bill's place for a good deal.
• 50:26
Speaker 8: This fireplace is narrowed, to be sure, But I think
• 50:30
Speaker 8: I can kick a little. She drew her foot as
• 50:36
Speaker 8: far down the chimney as she could and waited till
• 50:39
Speaker 8: she heard a little animal she couldn't guess of what
• 50:43
Speaker 8: sort it was, scratching and scrambling about in the chimney
• 50:48
Speaker 8: close above her. Then, saying to herself, this is Bill,
• 50:54
Speaker 8: she gave one sharp kick and waited to see what
• 50:58
Speaker 8: would happen. Next. The first thing she heard was a
• 51:03
Speaker 8: general chorus of there goes Bill, then the rabbit's voice along,
• 51:08
Speaker 8: catch him you by the hedge, Then silence, and then
• 51:14
Speaker 8: another confusion of voices. Hold robber's head, Brandon, now, don't
• 51:20
Speaker 8: choke him. How was it, old fellow? What happened to you?
• 51:24
Speaker 8: Tell us all about it?
• 51:29
  Speaker 3: Last?
• 51:29
Speaker 8: Came a little feeble squeaking voice. That's Bill, thought Alice. Well,
• 51:38
Speaker 8: I hardly know, no, morle. Thank ye, I'm better now,
• 51:41
Speaker 8: but I'm a deal too flustered to tell you all
• 51:45
Speaker 8: I know this. Something comes at me like a jack
• 51:47
Speaker 8: in the box, and up I goes like a skyrocket.
• 51:52
Speaker 8: So you, dear old fellow, said the others. We must
• 51:58
Speaker 8: burn the house down, said the rabbit's voice, and Alice
• 52:02
Speaker 8: called out as loud as she could. If you do,
• 52:06
Speaker 8: I'll set diner at you. There was a deadly silence instantly,
• 52:14
Speaker 8: and Alice thought to herself, I wonder what they will
• 52:18
Speaker 8: do next. If there had any sense, then take the
• 52:22
Speaker 8: roof off. After a minute or two, they began moving
• 52:27
Speaker 8: about again, and Alice heard the rabbit say, a barrelfool
• 52:32
Speaker 8: will do to begin with a barrelful of what? Thought Alice?
• 52:39
Speaker 8: But she had not longed to doubt. For the next moment,
• 52:43
Speaker 8: a shower of little pebbles came rattling in at the window,
• 52:47
Speaker 8: and some of them hit her in the face. I'll
• 52:51
Speaker 8: put a stop to this, she said to herself, and
• 52:53
Speaker 8: shouted out, you'd better not do that again, which produced
• 52:59
Speaker 8: another dead silence. Alice noted with some surprise that the
• 53:06
Speaker 8: pebbles were all turning into little cakes as they lay
• 53:09
Speaker 8: on the floor, and a bright idea came into her head.
• 53:15
Speaker 8: If I eat one of these cakes, she thought, it's
• 53:19
Speaker 8: sure to make some change in my size, and as
• 53:22
Speaker 8: it can't possibly make me larger, it must make me smaller,
• 53:27
Speaker 8: I suppose. So she swallowed one of the cakes, and
• 53:31
Speaker 8: was delighted to find that she began shrinking directly. As
• 53:37
Speaker 8: soon as she was small enough to get through the door,
• 53:39
Speaker 8: she ran out of the house and found quite a
• 53:42
Speaker 8: crowd of little animals and birds waiting outside. The poor
• 53:47
Speaker 8: little lizard bill was in the middle, being held up
• 53:51
Speaker 8: by two guinea pigs who were giving it something out
• 53:54
Speaker 8: of a bottle. They all made a rush at Alice
• 53:58
Speaker 8: the moment she appeared, but she ran off as hard
• 54:01
Speaker 8: as she could, and soon found herself safe in a
• 54:03
Speaker 8: thick wood. The first thing I've got to do, said
• 54:09
Speaker 8: Alice to herself, as she wandered about in the wood,
• 54:13
Speaker 8: is to grow to my right size again. And the
• 54:17
Speaker 8: second thing is to find my way into that lovely garden.
• 54:21
Speaker 8: I think that will be the best plan. It sounded
• 54:27
Speaker 8: an excellent plan, no doubt, and very neatly and simply arranged.
• 54:33
Speaker 8: The only difficulty was that she had not got the
• 54:37
Speaker 8: smallest idea how to set about it. And while she
• 54:41
Speaker 8: was peering about anxiously among the trees, a little sharp
• 54:45
Speaker 8: bark just over her head made her look up in
• 54:49
Speaker 8: a great hurry. An enormous puppy was looking down at
• 54:56
Speaker 8: her with large round eyes and feebly stres out one
• 55:00
Speaker 8: paw trying to touch her. Poor little thing, said Alice
• 55:07
Speaker 8: in a coaxing tone, And she tried hard to whistle
• 55:11
Speaker 8: to it, but she was terribly frightened all the time
• 55:14
Speaker 8: at the thought that it might be hungry, in which
• 55:17
Speaker 8: case it would be very likely to eat her up.
• 55:19
Speaker 8: In spite of all her cooxing, Hardly knowing what she did,
• 55:25
Speaker 8: she picked up a little bit of stick and held
• 55:28
Speaker 8: it out to the puppy, whereupon the puppy jumped into
• 55:31
Speaker 8: the air off all its feet at once with a
• 55:34
Speaker 8: yelp of delight, and rushed at the stick and made
• 55:38
Speaker 8: believe to worry it. Then Alice dodged behind a great
• 55:42
Speaker 8: thistle to keep herself from being run over, and the
• 55:46
Speaker 8: moment she appeared on the other side, the puppy made
• 55:49
Speaker 8: another rush at the stick and tumbled head over heels
• 55:52
Speaker 8: in its hurry to get hold of it. Then Alice,
• 55:56
Speaker 8: thinking it was very like having a game of play
• 55:59
Speaker 8: with a car and expecting every moment to be trampled
• 56:04
Speaker 8: under its feet, ran round the thistle again. Then the
• 56:08
Speaker 8: puppy began a series of short charges at the stick,
• 56:11
Speaker 8: running a very little way forwards each time, and a
• 56:14
Speaker 8: long way back, and barking hoarsely all the while, till
• 56:19
Speaker 8: at last it sat down a good way off, panting,
• 56:24
Speaker 8: with its tongue hanging out of his mouth and its
• 56:27
Speaker 8: great eyes half shut. This seemed to Alice a good
• 56:34
Speaker 8: opportunity for making her escape, so she set off it
• 56:38
Speaker 8: once and ran till she was quite tired and out
• 56:41
Speaker 8: of breath, and till the puppy's bark sounded quite faint
• 56:45
Speaker 8: in the distance. And yet what a dear little puppy,
• 56:51
Speaker 8: it was, said Alice, as she leaned against a buttercup
• 56:55
Speaker 8: to rest herself and found herself with one of the leaves.
• 57:00
Speaker 8: I should have liked teaching it tricks very much, if
• 57:04
Speaker 8: if I'd only been the right size to do it. Oh, dear,
• 57:08
Speaker 8: I'd nearly forgotten that I've got to grow up again.
• 57:12
Speaker 8: Let me see how is this to be managed? I
• 57:16
Speaker 8: suppose I ought to eat or drink something or other,
• 57:20
Speaker 8: But the great question is what. The great question, certainly
• 57:26
Speaker 8: was what. Alice looked all round her, at the flowers
• 57:32
Speaker 8: and the blades of grass, but she did not see
• 57:35
Speaker 8: anything that looked like the right thing to eat or
• 57:39
Speaker 8: drink under the circumstances. There was a large mushroom growing
• 57:45
Speaker 8: near her, about the same height as herself, and when
• 57:50
Speaker 8: she had looked under it, and on both sides of it,
• 57:53
Speaker 8: and behind it, it occurred to her that she might
• 57:57
Speaker 8: as well look and see what was on top of it.
• 58:02
Speaker 8: She stretched herself up on tiptoe and peeped over the
• 58:08
Speaker 8: edge of the mushroom, and her eyes immediately met those
• 58:13
Speaker 8: of a large caterpillar that was sitting on the top
• 58:18
Speaker 8: with its arms folded, quietly smoking a long hookah and
• 58:24
Speaker 8: taking not the smallest notice of her or of anything else.
• 58:33
Speaker 8: End of Chapter four.
• 58:35
Speaker 10: Chapter five, Advice from a Caterpillar. The caterpillar and Alice
• 58:42
Speaker 10: looked at each other for some time in silence. At last,
• 58:45
Speaker 10: the caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth and
• 58:48
Speaker 10: addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice.
• 58:52
  Speaker 7: Who are you?
• 58:54
Speaker 10: Said the caterpillar. This was not an encouraging opening for
• 58:58
Speaker 10: a conversation. Alice replied rather shyly. I I hardly know, sir,
• 59:04
Speaker 10: just at present. At least I know who I was
• 59:08
Speaker 10: when I got up this morning, but I think I
• 59:10
Speaker 10: must have been changed several times since then. What do
• 59:14
Speaker 10: you mean by that? Said the caterpillar, sternly, Explain yourself.
• 59:20
Speaker 10: I can't explain myself. I'm afraid, sir, said Alice, because
• 59:24
Speaker 10: I'm not myself. You see, I don't see, said the caterpillar.
• 59:31
Speaker 10: I'm afraid I can't put it more clearly, Alice replied
• 59:34
Speaker 10: very politely, for I can't understand it myself to begin with,
• 59:38
Speaker 10: and being so many different sizes in a day is
• 59:40
Speaker 10: very confusing, it isn't, said the caterpillar. Well, perhaps you
• 59:47
Speaker 10: haven't found it so yet, said Alice. But when you
• 59:50
Speaker 10: have to turn into a chrysalis you will some day,
• 59:53
Speaker 10: you know, and then after that into a butterfly. I
• 59:56
Speaker 10: should think you'll feel it a little queer, won't you?
• 1:00:00
  Speaker 7: Not a bit?
• 1:00:00
Speaker 10: Said the caterpillar. Well perhaps your feelings may be different,
• 1:00:05
Speaker 10: said Alice. All I know is it would feel very
• 1:00:08
Speaker 10: queer to me. You, said the caterpillar contemptuously.
• 1:00:13
  Speaker 7: Who are you?
• 1:00:16
Speaker 10: Which brought them back again to the beginning of the conversation.
• 1:00:20
Speaker 10: Alice felt a little irritated at the caterpillar's making such
• 1:00:23
Speaker 10: very short remarks, and she drew herself up and said,
• 1:00:27
Speaker 10: very gravely, I think you ought to tell me who
• 1:00:30
Speaker 10: you are first. Why said the caterpillar. Here was another
• 1:00:36
Speaker 10: puzzling question, And as Alice could not think of any
• 1:00:39
Speaker 10: good reason, and as the caterpillar seemed to be in
• 1:00:42
Speaker 10: a very unpleasant state of mind, she turned away. Come back,
• 1:00:47
Speaker 10: The caterpillar called after her. I've something important to say.
• 1:00:53
Speaker 10: This sounded promising, certainly. Alice turned and came back again.
• 1:00:58
Speaker 10: Keep your temper, said the caterpillar. Is that all, said Alice,
• 1:01:04
Speaker 10: swallowing down her anger as well as she could, No,
• 1:01:08
Speaker 10: said the caterpillar. Alice thought she might as well wait,
• 1:01:14
Speaker 10: as she had nothing else to do, and perhaps, after all,
• 1:01:17
Speaker 10: it might tell her something worth hearing. For some minutes
• 1:01:20
Speaker 10: it puffed away without speaking, but at last it unfolded
• 1:01:24
Speaker 10: its arms, took the hookah out of its mouth again,
• 1:01:26
Speaker 10: and said, so you think you're changed, do you? I'm
• 1:01:32
Speaker 10: afraid I am, sir, said Alice. I can't remember things
• 1:01:35
Speaker 10: as I used, and I don't keep the same size
• 1:01:38
Speaker 10: for ten minutes together. Can't remember what things, said the caterpillar. Well,
• 1:01:45
Speaker 10: I've tried to say how doth the little busy be?
• 1:01:48
Speaker 10: But it all came different. Alice replied, in a very
• 1:01:51
Speaker 10: melancholy voice. Repeat your old, father, William, said the caterpillar.
• 1:01:58
Speaker 10: Alice folded her hand and began. You are old, father William,
• 1:02:03
Speaker 10: the young man said, and your hair has become very white,
• 1:02:06
Speaker 10: and yet you incessantly stand on your head. Do you
• 1:02:09
Speaker 10: think at your age? It is right? In my youth,
• 1:02:13
Speaker 10: Father William replied to his son. I feared it might
• 1:02:15
Speaker 10: injure the brain, But now that I'm perfectly sure I
• 1:02:18
Speaker 10: have none, why I do it again? And again? You
• 1:02:22
Speaker 10: are old, said the youth, as I mentioned before, and
• 1:02:25
Speaker 10: have grown most uncommonly fat yet you turned a back
• 1:02:28
Speaker 10: somersault in at the door. Pray, what is the reason
• 1:02:31
Speaker 10: of that? In my youth, said the sage, as he
• 1:02:34
Speaker 10: shook his gray locks, I kept all my limbs very
• 1:02:37
Speaker 10: supple by the use of this ointment. One shilling the box,
• 1:02:40
Speaker 10: allow me to sell you a couple. You are old,
• 1:02:44
Speaker 10: said the youth, And your jaws are too weak for
• 1:02:46
Speaker 10: anything tougher than suet. Yet you finished the goose with
• 1:02:49
Speaker 10: the bones and the beak. Pray, how did you manage
• 1:02:52
Speaker 10: to do it? In my youth, said his father, I
• 1:02:55
Speaker 10: took to the law and argued each case with my
• 1:02:58
Speaker 10: wife and a muscular string, which it gave to my
• 1:03:01
Speaker 10: jaw as lasted the rest of my life. You are old,
• 1:03:05
Speaker 10: said the youth. One would hardly suppose that your eye
• 1:03:07
Speaker 10: was as steady as ever. Yet you balanced an eel
• 1:03:10
Speaker 10: on the end of your nose. What made you so
• 1:03:12
Speaker 10: awfully clever? I have answered three questions, and that is enough,
• 1:03:17
Speaker 10: said his father. Don't give yourself airs. Do you think
• 1:03:20
Speaker 10: I can listen all day to such stuff? Be off,
• 1:03:22
Speaker 10: or I'll kick you down stairs. That is not said, right,
• 1:03:27
Speaker 10: said the caterpillar. Not quite right, I'm afraid, said Alice. Timidly.
• 1:03:33
Speaker 10: Some of the words have got altered. It is wrong
• 1:03:37
Speaker 10: from beginning to end, said the caterpillar decidedly, and there
• 1:03:41
Speaker 10: was silence for some minutes. The caterpillar was the first
• 1:03:46
Speaker 10: to speak. What size do you want to be?
• 1:03:50
  Speaker 7: It asked.
• 1:03:52
Speaker 10: Oh, I'm not particular as to size. Alice hastily replied,
• 1:03:56
Speaker 10: only one doesn't like changing so often. You know, I
• 1:04:00
Speaker 10: don't know, said the caterpillar. Alice said nothing. She had
• 1:04:06
Speaker 10: never been so much contradicted in her life before, and
• 1:04:09
Speaker 10: she felt that she was losing her temper. Are you
• 1:04:13
Speaker 10: content now, said the caterpillar. Well, I should like to
• 1:04:18
Speaker 10: be a little larger, sir, if you wouldn't mind, said Alice.
• 1:04:22
Speaker 10: Three inches is such a wretched height to be. It
• 1:04:25
Speaker 10: is a very good height, indeed, said the caterpillar, angrily,
• 1:04:29
Speaker 10: rearing itself upright as it spoke. It was exactly three
• 1:04:32
Speaker 10: inches high. But I'm not used to it, pleaded poor
• 1:04:36
Speaker 10: Alice in a piteous tone, And she thought to herself,
• 1:04:40
Speaker 10: I wish the creatures wouldn't be so easily offended. You'll
• 1:04:44
Speaker 10: get used to it in time, said the caterpillar, and
• 1:04:47
Speaker 10: it put the hookah into its mouth and began smoking.
• 1:04:50
  Speaker 7: Again.
• 1:04:52
Speaker 10: This time, Alice waited patiently until it chose to speak again.
• 1:04:57
Speaker 10: In a minute or two, the caterpillar took the hookah
• 1:04:59
Speaker 10: out of it its mouth and yawned once or twice
• 1:05:02
Speaker 10: and shook itself. Then it got down off the mushroom
• 1:05:06
Speaker 10: and crawled away in the grass, merely remarking as it went,
• 1:05:10
Speaker 10: one side will make you grow taller, and the other
• 1:05:12
Speaker 10: side will make you grow shorter. One side of what
• 1:05:17
Speaker 10: the other side of what? Thought Alice to herself of
• 1:05:21
Speaker 10: the mushroom, said the caterpillar, just as if she had
• 1:05:23
Speaker 10: asked it aloud, And in another moment it was out
• 1:05:27
Speaker 10: of sight. Alice remained looking thoughtfully at the mushroom for
• 1:05:32
Speaker 10: a minute, trying to make out which were the two
• 1:05:34
Speaker 10: sides of it, And as it was perfectly round, she
• 1:05:37
Speaker 10: found this a very difficult question. However, at last she
• 1:05:41
Speaker 10: stretched her arms round it as far as they would go,
• 1:05:44
Speaker 10: and broke off a bit of the edge with each hand.
• 1:05:48
Speaker 10: And now which is which, she said to herself, and
• 1:05:51
Speaker 10: nibbled a little of the right hand bit to try
• 1:05:53
Speaker 10: the effect. The next moment she felt a violent blow
• 1:05:57
Speaker 10: underneath her chin. It had struck her foot. She was
• 1:06:01
Speaker 10: a good deal frightened by this very sudden change, but
• 1:06:04
Speaker 10: she felt that there was no time to be lost,
• 1:06:06
Speaker 10: as she was shrinking rapidly, so she set to work
• 1:06:09
Speaker 10: at once to eat some of the other bit. Her
• 1:06:12
Speaker 10: chin was pressed so closely against her foot that there
• 1:06:14
Speaker 10: was hardly room to open her mouth, but she did
• 1:06:17
Speaker 10: it at last and managed to swallow a morsel of
• 1:06:20
Speaker 10: the left hand bit. Come my head's free at last,
• 1:06:25
Speaker 10: said Alice, in a tone of delight, which changed into
• 1:06:28
Speaker 10: alarm in another moment when she found that her shoulders
• 1:06:31
Speaker 10: were nowhere to be found. All she could see when
• 1:06:34
Speaker 10: she looked down was an immense length of neck, which
• 1:06:38
Speaker 10: seemed to rise like a stalk out of a sea
• 1:06:40
Speaker 10: of green leaves that lay far below her. What can
• 1:06:45
Speaker 10: all that green stuff be? Said Alice? And where have
• 1:06:48
Speaker 10: my shoulders got to? And oh, my poor hands, how
• 1:06:51
Speaker 10: is it I can't see you? She was moving them
• 1:06:54
Speaker 10: about as she spoke, but no results seemed to follow,
• 1:06:58
Speaker 10: except a little shaking among the distant green leaves. As
• 1:07:02
Speaker 10: there seemed to be no chance of getting her hands
• 1:07:05
Speaker 10: up to her head, she tried to get her head
• 1:07:07
Speaker 10: down to them, and was delighted to find that her
• 1:07:10
Speaker 10: neck would bend about easily in any direction like a serpent.
• 1:07:14
Speaker 10: She had just succeeded in curving it down into a
• 1:07:17
Speaker 10: graceful zigzag, and was going to dive in among the leaves,
• 1:07:21
Speaker 10: which she found to be nothing but the tops of
• 1:07:23
Speaker 10: the trees under which she had been wandering, when a
• 1:07:26
Speaker 10: sharp hiss made her draw back in a hurry. A
• 1:07:29
Speaker 10: large pigeon had flown into her face and was beating
• 1:07:31
Speaker 10: her violently with its wings. Serpent, screamed the pigeon. I'm
• 1:07:37
Speaker 10: not a serpent, said Alice, indignantly. Let me alone, Serpent,
• 1:07:42
Speaker 10: I say again, repeated the pigeon, but in a more
• 1:07:45
Speaker 10: subdued tone, and added with a kind of sob. I've
• 1:07:48
Speaker 10: tried every way, and nothing seems to suit them. I
• 1:07:52
Speaker 10: haven't the least idea what you're talking about, said Alice.
• 1:07:56
Speaker 10: I've tried the roots of trees, and I've tried banks,
• 1:07:59
Speaker 10: and I've tried hedges. The pigeon went on without attending
• 1:08:02
Speaker 10: to her. But those serpents, there's no pleasing them. Alice
• 1:08:07
Speaker 10: was more and more puzzled, but she thought there was
• 1:08:10
Speaker 10: no use in saying anything more till the pigeon had finished,
• 1:08:15
Speaker 10: as if it wasn't trouble enough hatching the eggs, said
• 1:08:18
Speaker 10: the pigeon, But I must be on the lookout for
• 1:08:20
Speaker 10: serpents night and day. Why I haven't had a wink
• 1:08:23
Speaker 10: of sleep these three weeks. I'm very sorry you've been annoyed,
• 1:08:28
Speaker 10: said Alice, who was beginning to see its meaning. And
• 1:08:32
Speaker 10: just as I'd taken the highest tree in the wood,
• 1:08:34
Speaker 10: continued the pigeon, raising its voice to a shriek. And
• 1:08:38
Speaker 10: just as I was thinking I should be free of
• 1:08:39
Speaker 10: them at last, they must needs come wriggling down from
• 1:08:42
Speaker 10: the sky. Uugh, serpent. But I'm not a serpent, I
• 1:08:47
  Speaker 10: tell you, said Alice. I'm a I'm a well what
• 1:08:52
Speaker 10: are you? Said the pigeon. I can see you're trying
• 1:08:55
Speaker 10: to invent something. I I'm a little girl, said Alice,
• 1:08:59
Speaker 10: rather doubtfully, as she remembered the number of changes she
• 1:09:02
Speaker 10: had gone through that day. A likely story, indeed, said
• 1:09:07
Speaker 10: the pigeon, in a tone of the deepest contempt. I've
• 1:09:10
Speaker 10: seen a good many little girls in my time, but
• 1:09:12
Speaker 10: never one with such a neck as that. No, No,
• 1:09:15
  Speaker 10: you're a serpent, and there's no use denying it. I
• 1:09:17
Speaker 10: suppose you'll be telling me next that you have never
• 1:09:19
Speaker 10: tasted an egg. I have tasted eggs, certainly, said Alice,
• 1:09:24
Speaker 10: who was a very truthful child. But little girls eat
• 1:09:27
Speaker 10: eggs quite as much as serpents, do you know? I
• 1:09:31
Speaker 10: don't believe it, said the pigeon. But if they do,
• 1:09:34
  Speaker 10: why then they're a kind of serpent, That's all I
• 1:09:36
Speaker 10: can say. This was such a new idea to Alice
• 1:09:41
Speaker 10: that she was quite silent for a minute or two,
• 1:09:43
Speaker 10: which gave the pigeon the opportunity of adding, you're looking
• 1:09:47
Speaker 10: for eggs. I know that well enough. And what does
• 1:09:49
Speaker 10: it matter to me whether you're a little girl or
• 1:09:51
Speaker 10: a serpent? It matters a good deal to me, said
• 1:09:55
Speaker 10: Alice hastily. But I'm not looking for eggs, as it happens,
• 1:09:59
  Speaker 10: and if I won't, I shouldn't want yours. I don't
• 1:10:01
Speaker 10: like them. Raw Well, be off, then, said the pigeon
• 1:10:05
Speaker 10: in a sulky tone, as it settled down again into
• 1:10:08
Speaker 10: its nest. Alice crouched down among the trees as well
• 1:10:12
Speaker 10: as she could, for her neck kept getting entangled among
• 1:10:15
Speaker 10: the branches, and every now and then she had to
• 1:10:17
Speaker 10: stop and untwist it. After a while, she remembered that
• 1:10:21
Speaker 10: she still held the pieces of mushroom in her hands,
• 1:10:24
Speaker 10: and she set to work very carefully, nibbling first at
• 1:10:28
Speaker 10: one and then at the other, and growing sometimes taller
• 1:10:31
Speaker 10: and sometimes shorter, until she had succeeded in bringing herself
• 1:10:34
Speaker 10: down to her usual height. It was so long since
• 1:10:39
Speaker 10: she had been anything near the right size that it
• 1:10:41
Speaker 10: felt quite strange at first, but she got used to
• 1:10:44
Speaker 10: it in a few minutes and began talking to herself
• 1:10:47
Speaker 10: as usual. Come, there's half my plan done now. How
• 1:10:51
Speaker 10: puzzling all these changes are. I'm never sure what I'm
• 1:10:54
Speaker 10: going to be from one minute to another. However, I've
• 1:10:57
Speaker 10: got back to my right size. The next thing is
• 1:11:00
Speaker 10: to get into that beautiful garden. How is that to
• 1:11:03
  Speaker 10: be done?
• 1:11:03
  Speaker 7: I wonder?
• 1:11:05
Speaker 10: As she said this, she came suddenly upon an open
• 1:11:08
Speaker 10: place with a little house in it about four feet high.
• 1:11:12
Speaker 10: Whoever lives there, thought Alice, it'll never do to come
• 1:11:15
Speaker 10: upon them this size. Why I should frighten them out
• 1:11:18
Speaker 10: of their wits. So she began nibbling at the right
• 1:11:22
Speaker 10: hand bit again, and did not venture to go near
• 1:11:24
Speaker 10: the house till she had brought herself down to nine
• 1:11:27
Speaker 10: inches high. End of Chapter five.
• 1:11:32
Speaker 3: Chapter six, Pagan Pepper for a minute or two she
• 1:11:36
Speaker 3: stood looking at the house and wondering what to do next,
• 1:11:39
Speaker 3: when suddenly a footman and livery came running out of
• 1:11:41
Speaker 3: the wood. She considered him a footman because he was
• 1:11:44
Speaker 3: in livery, Otherwise, judging by his face only, she would
• 1:11:46
Speaker 3: have called him a fish, and rapped loudly at the
• 1:11:48
Speaker 3: door with his knuckles. It was opened by another footman
• 1:11:51
Speaker 3: in livery, with a round face and large eyes like
• 1:11:54
Speaker 3: a frog, and both footmen, Alice noticed, had powdered hair
• 1:11:57
Speaker 3: and curls all over their head. She felt very curious
• 1:12:00
Speaker 3: to know what it was all about, and crept a
• 1:12:02
Speaker 3: little way out of the wood to listen. The fish
• 1:12:04
Speaker 3: footman began by producing from under his arm a great letter,
• 1:12:07
Speaker 3: nearly as large as himself, and this he handed over
• 1:12:10
Speaker 3: to the other, saying, in a solemn tone, for the
• 1:12:12
Speaker 3: Duchess an invitation from the Queen to play croquet. The
• 1:12:15
Speaker 3: frog footman repeated in the same solemn tone, only changing
• 1:12:18
Speaker 3: the order of the words a little from the Queen,
• 1:12:21
Speaker 3: an invitation for the duchess to play croquet. Then they
• 1:12:24
Speaker 3: both bowed, and their curls got entangled together. Alice laughed
• 1:12:28
Speaker 3: so much at this that she had to run back
• 1:12:30
Speaker 3: into the wood for fear of their hearing her. And
• 1:12:32
Speaker 3: when she next peeped out, the fish footman was gone,
• 1:12:35
Speaker 3: and the other was sitting on the ground near the door,
• 1:12:37
Speaker 3: staring stupidly up into the sky. Alice went timidly up
• 1:12:41
Speaker 3: to the door and knocked. There's no sort of use
• 1:12:43
Speaker 3: in knocking, said the footman, and that for two reasons,
• 1:12:47
Speaker 3: First because I'm on the same side of the door
• 1:12:49
Speaker 3: as you. Secondly, because they're making such a noise inside
• 1:12:52
Speaker 3: that no one could possibly hear you. And certainly there
• 1:12:55
Speaker 3: was a most extraordinary noise going on within, a constant
• 1:12:58
Speaker 3: howling and sneezing, and every now and then a great crash,
• 1:13:00
Speaker 3: as if a dish or a kettle had been broken
• 1:13:03
Speaker 3: to pieces. Please, then, said Alice, how am I to
• 1:13:06
Speaker 3: get in? There might be some sense in your knocking.
• 1:13:09
Speaker 3: The footman went on without attending to her. If we
• 1:13:11
Speaker 3: had a door between us, for instance, if you were inside,
• 1:13:14
Speaker 3: you might knock and I could let you out. You know,
• 1:13:17
Speaker 3: he was looking up into the sky all the time
• 1:13:19
Speaker 3: he was speaking. And this, Alice thought, decidedly and civil.
• 1:13:22
Speaker 3: But perhaps he can't help it, she said to herself.
• 1:13:24
Speaker 3: His eyes are so very nearly at the top of
• 1:13:27
Speaker 3: his head. But at any rate he might answer questions.
• 1:13:30
Speaker 3: How am I to get in? She repeated aloud. I
• 1:13:33
Speaker 3: shall sit here, the footman remarked, till tomorrow. At this moment,
• 1:13:38
Speaker 3: the door of the house opened, and a large plate
• 1:13:40
Speaker 3: came skimming out straight for the footman's head. It just
• 1:13:43
Speaker 3: grazed his nose and broke to pieces against one of
• 1:13:46
Speaker 3: the trees behind him. Or next day maybe, The footman
• 1:13:49
Speaker 3: continued in the same tone, exactly as if nothing had happened.
• 1:13:53
Speaker 3: How am I to get in? Asked Alice in a
• 1:13:56
Speaker 3: louder tone. Are you to get in at all? Said
• 1:13:59
Speaker 3: the footman, that's the first question, you know, It was
• 1:14:02
Speaker 3: no doubt. Only Alice did not like to be told.
• 1:14:05
Speaker 3: So it's really dreadful, she muttered to herself, the way
• 1:14:08
Speaker 3: all these creatures argue. It's enough to drive one crazy.
• 1:14:12
Speaker 3: The footman seemed to think this a good opportunity for
• 1:14:14
Speaker 3: repeating his remark with variations. I shall sit here, he said,
• 1:14:19
Speaker 3: on and off for days and days. But what am
• 1:14:21
Speaker 3: I to do, said Alice. Anything you like, said the footman,
• 1:14:25
Speaker 3: and began whistling. Oh, there's no use in talking to him,
• 1:14:28
Speaker 3: said Alice desperately. He's perfectly idiotic, and then opened the
• 1:14:31
Speaker 3: door and went in. The door led right into a
• 1:14:34
Speaker 3: large kitchen which was full of smoke from one end
• 1:14:37
Speaker 3: to the other. The Duchess was sitting on a three
• 1:14:39
Speaker 3: legged stool in the middle, nursing a baby. The cook
• 1:14:42
Speaker 3: was leaning over the fire, stirring a large caldron, which
• 1:14:44
Speaker 3: seemed to be full of soup. There's certainly too much
• 1:14:47
Speaker 3: pepper in that soup, Alice said to herself, as well
• 1:14:49
Speaker 3: as she could for sneezing, There certainly was too much
• 1:14:53
Speaker 3: of it in the air. Even the Duchess sneezed occasionally,
• 1:14:56
Speaker 3: and as for the baby, was sneezing and howling alternately
• 1:14:58
Speaker 3: without a moment's pause. The only two creatures in the
• 1:15:01
Speaker 3: kitchen that did not sneeze were the cook and the
• 1:15:03
Speaker 3: large cat, which was laying on the hearth and grinning
• 1:15:05
Speaker 3: from ear to ear. Please, would you tell me, said
• 1:15:09
Speaker 3: Alice a little timidly, for she was not quite sure
• 1:15:11
Speaker 3: whether it was good manners for her to speak. First,
• 1:15:14
Speaker 3: Why you are cat grins like that? It's a Cheshire cat,
• 1:15:18
Speaker 3: said the Duchess, And that's why pig, she said, the
• 1:15:21
Speaker 3: last word with such sudden violence that Alice quite jumped,
• 1:15:25
Speaker 3: But she saw in another moment that it was addressed
• 1:15:27
Speaker 3: to the baby and not to her, so she took
• 1:15:30
Speaker 3: courage and went on again. I didn't know that Cheshire
• 1:15:33
Speaker 3: cats always grinned. In fact, I didn't know that cats
• 1:15:36
Speaker 3: could grin. They all can, said the Duchess, and most
• 1:15:39
Speaker 3: of them do. I don't know any that do, said Alice,
• 1:15:42
Speaker 3: very politely, feeling quite pleased to have gotten into a conversation.
• 1:15:45
Speaker 3: You don't know much, said the Duchess, and that's a fact.
• 1:15:49
Speaker 3: Alice did not like it all the tone of this remark,
• 1:15:52
Speaker 3: and thought it would be as well to introduce some
• 1:15:53
Speaker 3: other subject of conversation. While she was trying to fix
• 1:15:57
Speaker 3: on one, the cook took the cauldron of soup off
• 1:15:59
Speaker 3: the fire and at once set to work throwing everything
• 1:16:02
Speaker 3: within her reach at the Duchess and the baby. The
• 1:16:05
Speaker 3: fire irons came first, then followed a shower of saucepans, plates,
• 1:16:09
Speaker 3: and dishes. The Duchess took no notice of them even
• 1:16:11
Speaker 3: when they hit her, and the baby was howling so
• 1:16:14
Speaker 3: much already that it was quite impossible to say whether
• 1:16:16
Speaker 3: the blows hurt it or not. Oh, please mind what
• 1:16:20
Speaker 3: you're doing, cried Alex, jumping up and down an agony
• 1:16:23
Speaker 3: of terror. Oh there goes as precious nose as an
• 1:16:26
Speaker 3: unusually large saucepan flew by, and very nearly carried it off.
• 1:16:30
Speaker 3: If everybody minded their own business, said the Duchess in
• 1:16:33
Speaker 3: a horse growl, the world would go around a deal
• 1:16:35
Speaker 3: faster than it does, which would not be an advantage,
• 1:16:38
Speaker 3: said Alice, who felt very glad to get an opportunity
• 1:16:41
Speaker 3: of showing off a little of her knowledge. Just think
• 1:16:43
Speaker 3: of what work it would make of her the day
• 1:16:45
Speaker 3: and night. You see, the earth takes twenty four hours
• 1:16:48
Speaker 3: to turn around on its axis. Talking of axes, said
• 1:16:51
Speaker 3: the Duchess, chop off her head. Alice glanced rather anxiously
• 1:16:55
Speaker 3: at the cook to see if she meant to take
• 1:16:56
Speaker 3: the hint, but the cook was busily stirring the soup
• 1:16:59
Speaker 3: and seemed not to be. She went on again, twenty
• 1:17:02
Speaker 3: four hours, I think, or is it twelve? I? Oh,
• 1:17:05
Speaker 3: don't bother me, said the Duchess. I never could abide figures,
• 1:17:09
Speaker 3: And with this she began nursing the child again, singing
• 1:17:11
Speaker 3: a sort of lallabye to it as she did so,
• 1:17:13
Speaker 3: and giving a violent shake at the end of every line,
• 1:17:16
Speaker 3: speak roughly to your little boy, and beat him when
• 1:17:20
Speaker 3: he sneezes. He only does it to annoy because he
• 1:17:24
Speaker 3: knows it teases. And then the chorus, in which the
• 1:17:27
Speaker 3: cook and the baby joined Wow Wow Wow. While the
• 1:17:31
Speaker 3: duchess sang the second verse of the song, she kept
• 1:17:34
Speaker 3: tossing the baby violently up and down, and the poor
• 1:17:36
Speaker 3: little thing howled so that Alice could hardly hear the words,
• 1:17:39
Speaker 3: I speak severely to my boy and beat him when
• 1:17:42
Speaker 3: he sneezes, for he can thoroughly enjoy the pepper when
• 1:17:47
Speaker 3: he pleases. Wow wow Wow. Here you might nurse out
• 1:17:51
Speaker 3: a bit if you like. The duchess said to Alice,
• 1:17:54
Speaker 3: flinging the baby at her as she spoke, I must
• 1:17:56
Speaker 3: go and get ready to play croquet with the Queen.
• 1:17:59
Speaker 3: And she hurried out the room, and the cook threw
• 1:18:01
Speaker 3: a frying pan after her. She went, but just missed her.
• 1:18:04
Speaker 3: Alice caught the baby with some difficulty, as it was
• 1:18:06
Speaker 3: a queer shaped little creature, and held out its arms
• 1:18:09
Speaker 3: and legs in all directions, just like a starfish, thought Alice.
• 1:18:13
Speaker 3: The poor little thing was snorting like a steam engine
• 1:18:15
Speaker 3: when she caught it, and kept doubling itself up and
• 1:18:18
Speaker 3: straightening itself out again, so that altogether for the first
• 1:18:20
Speaker 3: minute or two, it was as much as she could
• 1:18:22
Speaker 3: do to hold it. As soon as she had made
• 1:18:25
Speaker 3: out the proper way of nursing it, which was to
• 1:18:27
Speaker 3: twist it up in a sort of knot, and then
• 1:18:29
Speaker 3: keep tight hold of its rear end and left foot
• 1:18:31
Speaker 3: so as to prevent its undoing itself, she carried it
• 1:18:34
Speaker 3: into the open air. If I don't take this child
• 1:18:37
Speaker 3: away from me, thought Alice, they're sure to kill it
• 1:18:40
Speaker 3: in a day or two. Wouldn't it be murder to
• 1:18:42
Speaker 3: leave it behind? She said the last words out loud,
• 1:18:44
Speaker 3: and the little thing grunted in reply. It had left
• 1:18:47
Speaker 3: austineezing by this time. Don't grunt, said Alice. That's not
• 1:18:50
Speaker 3: at all a proper way of expressing yourself. The baby
• 1:18:53
Speaker 3: grunted again, and Alice looked very anxiously into its face
• 1:18:56
Speaker 3: to see what was the matter with it. There could
• 1:18:58
Speaker 3: be no doubt that it had a turn up nose,
• 1:19:01
Speaker 3: which was more like a snout than a real nose. Also,
• 1:19:04
Speaker 3: its eyes were getting extremely small for a baby altogether,
• 1:19:07
Speaker 3: Alice did not like the look of the thing at all.
• 1:19:10
Speaker 3: But perhaps it's only sobbing, she thought, and looked into
• 1:19:12
Speaker 3: its eyes again to see if there were any tears. No,
• 1:19:16
Speaker 3: there were no tears. If you're going to turn into
• 1:19:19
Speaker 3: a pig, my dear, said Alice, seriously, I've got nothing
• 1:19:21
Speaker 3: more to do with you. Mind now. The poor little
• 1:19:24
Speaker 3: thing sobbed again or grunted, it was impossible to say which,
• 1:19:27
Speaker 3: and then went on for some while in silence. Alice
• 1:19:30
Speaker 3: was just beginning to think to herself, now, what am
• 1:19:32
Speaker 3: I supposed to do with this creature when I get home?
• 1:19:34
Speaker 3: When it grunted again, so violently that she looked down
• 1:19:37
Speaker 3: into its face with some alarm. This time there could
• 1:19:40
Speaker 3: be no mistake about it. It was neither more or
• 1:19:43
Speaker 3: less than a pig, and she felt that it would
• 1:19:46
Speaker 3: be quite absurd for her to carry it any further.
• 1:19:48
Speaker 3: So she let the little creature down, and felt quite
• 1:19:50
Speaker 3: relieved to see it trot away quietly into the woods.
• 1:19:53
Speaker 3: If it had grown up, she said to herself, it
• 1:19:55
Speaker 3: would have made a dreadfully ugly child, But it makes
• 1:19:58
Speaker 3: a rather handsome pig. And she began thinking of her
• 1:20:01
Speaker 3: other children. She knew who might do very well as pigs,
• 1:20:04
Speaker 3: and was just saying to herself, if one only knew
• 1:20:07
Speaker 3: the right way to change them, when she was a
• 1:20:09
Speaker 3: little startled by seeing the cheshire cat sitting on the
• 1:20:12
Speaker 3: bow of a tree just a few yards off. The
• 1:20:14
Speaker 3: cat only grinned when it saw Alice, and it looked
• 1:20:17
Speaker 3: good natured, she thought. Still, it had very long claws
• 1:20:20
Speaker 3: and a great many teeth, so she felt that it
• 1:20:22
Speaker 3: ought to be treated with respect. Cheshire Puss, she began
• 1:20:26
Speaker 3: rather timidly, and she did not at all know whether
• 1:20:29
Speaker 3: it would like the name. However, it only grinned a
• 1:20:31
Speaker 3: little wider. Come it's pleased so far, thought Alice, and
• 1:20:34
Speaker 3: she went on, would you tell me please which way
• 1:20:37
Speaker 3: I ought to go from here? That depends a good
• 1:20:41
Speaker 3: deal on where you want to go, said the cat.
• 1:20:44
Speaker 3: I don't much care where, said Alice. Then it doesn't
• 1:20:48
Speaker 3: matter which way you go, said the cat, so as
• 1:20:51
Speaker 3: long as I go somewhere, Alice added with explanation, Oh,
• 1:20:55
Speaker 3: you're sure to do that, said the cat, if only
• 1:20:59
Speaker 3: you walk long enough. Alice felt that this could not
• 1:21:02
Speaker 3: be denied, so she tried another question. What sort of
• 1:21:05
Speaker 3: people live about here? In that direction? The cat said,
• 1:21:10
Speaker 3: waving its right par round lives a hatter, and in
• 1:21:13
Speaker 3: that direction, waving the other paw leaves a march here.
• 1:21:18
Speaker 3: Visit either you like? They're both mad. But I don't
• 1:21:21
Speaker 3: want to go among mad people. Alice remarked. Oh you
• 1:21:24
Speaker 3: can't help that, said the cat. We're all mad here.
• 1:21:28
Speaker 3: I'm mad, you're mad. How do you know I'm mad?
• 1:21:31
Speaker 3: Said Alice. You must be, said the cat, or you
• 1:21:34
Speaker 3: wouldn't have come here. Alice didn't think that proves it
• 1:21:37
Speaker 3: at all. However, she went on, and how do you
• 1:21:40
Speaker 3: know that you're mad? To begin with? Said the cat.
• 1:21:43
Speaker 3: A dog's not mad. You grant that. I suppose so,
• 1:21:47
Speaker 3: said Alice. Well, then the cat went on. You see
• 1:21:51
Speaker 3: a dog growls when it's angry and wags its tail
• 1:21:54
Speaker 3: when it's pleased. Now I growl when I'm pleased and
• 1:21:58
Speaker 3: wag my tail when I'm angry. Therefore I'm mad. I
• 1:22:03
Speaker 3: call it purring, not growling, said Alice. Call it what
• 1:22:06
Speaker 3: you like, said the cat. Do you play croquet with
• 1:22:09
Speaker 3: the Queen today? I should like it very much, said Alice.
• 1:22:13
Speaker 3: But I haven't been invited yet. You'll see me there,
• 1:22:16
Speaker 3: said the cat, and vanished. Alice was not much surprised
• 1:22:20
Speaker 3: at this, she was getting so well used to the
• 1:22:22
Speaker 3: queer things happening. While she was still looking at the
• 1:22:25
Speaker 3: place where it had been, it suddenly appeared again by
• 1:22:28
Speaker 3: the bye. What became of the baby? Said the cat.
• 1:22:32
Speaker 3: I'd nearly forgotten to ask. It turned into a pig,
• 1:22:36
Speaker 3: Alice answered, very quietly, Just as if the cat had
• 1:22:39
Speaker 3: come back in a natural way. I thought it would,
• 1:22:42
Speaker 3: said the cat, and vanished again. Alice waited a little,
• 1:22:45
Speaker 3: half expecting to see it again, but it did not appear.
• 1:22:48
Speaker 3: After a minute or two, she walked on in the
• 1:22:50
Speaker 3: direction in which the March Hare was said to live.
• 1:22:53
Speaker 3: I've seen Hatteras before, she said to herself. The march
• 1:22:56
Speaker 3: Hare will be much more interesting. And perhaps, as this may,
• 1:23:00
Speaker 3: it won't be raving mad, at least not so mad
• 1:23:03
Speaker 3: as it was in March. And she said this, she
• 1:23:06
Speaker 3: looked up, and there was the cat again, sitting on
• 1:23:08
Speaker 3: the branch of a tree. Did you say, pig or fig?
• 1:23:13
Speaker 3: Said the cat? I said, pig, replied Alice. And I
• 1:23:16
Speaker 3: wish that you wouldn't keep appearing and vanishing so suddenly.
• 1:23:20
Speaker 3: You make one quite giddy. All right, said the cat,
• 1:23:24
Speaker 3: And this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the
• 1:23:26
Speaker 3: end of the tail and ending with the grin, which
• 1:23:28
Speaker 3: remained some time after the rest of it had gone well.
• 1:23:32
Speaker 3: I've often seen a cat without a grin, thought Alice,
• 1:23:35
Speaker 3: But a grin without a cat, It's the most curious
• 1:23:38
Speaker 3: thing I ever saw in all my life. She had
• 1:23:41
Speaker 3: not gone much further before she came inside of the
• 1:23:43
Speaker 3: house of the march Hare. She thought it must be
• 1:23:46
Speaker 3: the right house, because the chimneys were shaped like ears,
• 1:23:48
Speaker 3: and the roof was thatched with fur. It was such
• 1:23:51
Speaker 3: a large house that she did not like to go
• 1:23:53
Speaker 3: nearer till she had nibbled some more off the left
• 1:23:55
Speaker 3: hand bit of a mushroom, and she raised herself about
• 1:23:58
Speaker 3: two feet high. Even then she walked up towards it
• 1:24:01
Speaker 3: rather timidly, saying to herself, suppose it should be raving mad.
• 1:24:05
Speaker 3: After all, I almost wish I'd gone to the hatter instead.
• 1:24:10
  Speaker 3: End of chapter.
• 1:24:11
Speaker 2: Six, Chapter seven, A mad tea party. There was a
• 1:24:18
Speaker 2: table set out under a tree in front of the house,
• 1:24:21
Speaker 2: and the march Hare and the Hatter were having tea
• 1:24:24
Speaker 2: at it. A dormouse was sitting between them, fast asleep,
• 1:24:29
Speaker 2: and the other two were using it as a cushion,
• 1:24:31
Speaker 2: resting their elbows on it and talking over its head.
• 1:24:36
Speaker 2: Very uncomfortable for the dormouse, thought Alice. Only as it's asleep,
• 1:24:41
Speaker 2: I suppose it doesn't mind. The table was a large one,
• 1:24:46
Speaker 2: but the three were all crowded together at one corner
• 1:24:49
Speaker 2: of it. No room, no room, they cried out when
• 1:24:53
Speaker 2: they saw Alice coming. There's plenty of room, said Alice indignantly,
• 1:24:58
Speaker 2: and she sat down in a large arm chair at
• 1:25:01
Speaker 2: one end of the table. Have some wine, the march
• 1:25:05
Speaker 2: Hare said, in an encouraging tone. Alice looked all round
• 1:25:10
Speaker 2: the table, but there was nothing on it but tea.
• 1:25:13
Speaker 2: I don't see any wine, she remarked. There isn't any,
• 1:25:18
Speaker 2: said the march Hare. Then it wasn't very civil of
• 1:25:22
Speaker 2: you to offer it, said Alice angrily. It wasn't very
• 1:25:26
Speaker 2: civil of you to sit down without being invited, said
• 1:25:29
Speaker 2: the march Hare. I didn't know it was your table,
• 1:25:32
Speaker 2: said Alice. It's laid for a great many more than three.
• 1:25:38
Speaker 2: Your hair wants cutting, said the hatter. He had been
• 1:25:42
Speaker 2: looking at Alice for some time with great curiosity, and
• 1:25:45
Speaker 2: this was his first speech. You should learn not to
• 1:25:49
Speaker 2: make personal remarks. Alice said, with some severity, it's very rude.
• 1:25:57
Speaker 2: The hatter opened his eyes very wide on hearing this,
• 1:26:00
Speaker 2: but all he said was why is a raven like
• 1:26:05
  Speaker 2: a writing desk?
• 1:26:07
  Speaker 3: Come?
• 1:26:07
Speaker 2: We shall have some fun now, thought Alice. I'm glad
• 1:26:10
Speaker 2: they've begun asking riddles. I believe I can guess that.
• 1:26:15
Speaker 2: She added aloud. Do you mean that you think you
• 1:26:18
Speaker 2: can find out the answer to it? Said the march hare.
• 1:26:23
Speaker 2: Exactly so, said Alice. Then you should say what you mean.
• 1:26:28
Speaker 2: The march Hare went on, I do, Alice hastily replied,
• 1:26:34
Speaker 2: at least at least I mean what I say. That's
• 1:26:38
Speaker 2: the same thing, you know, not the same thing a bit,
• 1:26:42
Speaker 2: said the hatter. You might just as well say that
• 1:26:46
Speaker 2: I see what I eat is the same thing as
• 1:26:50
Speaker 2: I eat what I see. You might just as well say,
• 1:26:55
Speaker 2: added the march Hare. That I like what I get
• 1:26:59
Speaker 2: is the same thing as I get what I like.
• 1:27:04
Speaker 2: You might just as well say, added the dormouse, who
• 1:27:07
Speaker 2: seemed to be talking in his sleep, that I breathe
• 1:27:11
Speaker 2: when I sleep is the same thing as I sleep.
• 1:27:15
Speaker 2: When I breathe, it is the same thing with you,
• 1:27:20
Speaker 2: said the hatter. And here the conversation dropped, and the
• 1:27:24
Speaker 2: party sat silent for a minute while Alice thought over
• 1:27:27
Speaker 2: all she could remember about ravens and writing desks, which
• 1:27:31
Speaker 2: wasn't much. The hatter was the first to break the silence.
• 1:27:37
Speaker 2: What day of the month is it? He said, turning
• 1:27:40
Speaker 2: to Alice. He had taken his watch out of his
• 1:27:43
Speaker 2: pocket and was looking at it uneasily, shaking it every
• 1:27:46
Speaker 2: now and then and holding it to his ear. Alice
• 1:27:51
Speaker 2: considered a little and then said the fourth two days wrong,
• 1:27:58
Speaker 2: sighed the hatter. I told you butter wouldn't suit the works,
• 1:28:02
Speaker 2: he added, looking angrily at the march Hare. It was
• 1:28:07
Speaker 2: the best butter. The march Hare meekly replied, yes, but
• 1:28:12
Speaker 2: some crumbs must have got in as well. The hatter grumbled,
• 1:28:16
Speaker 2: you shouldn't have put it in with the bread knife.
• 1:28:20
Speaker 2: The march Hare took the watch and looked at it gloomily.
• 1:28:24
Speaker 2: Then he dipped it into his cup of tea and
• 1:28:26
Speaker 2: looked at it again. But he could think of nothing
• 1:28:29
Speaker 2: better to say than his first remark, it was the
• 1:28:33
Speaker 2: best butter, you know. Alice had been looking over his
• 1:28:37
Speaker 2: shoulder with some curiosity. What a funny watch, she remarked.
• 1:28:43
Speaker 2: It tells the day of the month, and doesn't tell
• 1:28:45
Speaker 2: what o'clock it is, Why should it, muttered the hatter.
• 1:28:50
Speaker 2: Does your watch tell you what year it is? Of
• 1:28:54
Speaker 2: course not, Alice replied very readily. But that's because it
• 1:28:59
Speaker 2: stays the same year for such a long time together,
• 1:29:03
Speaker 2: which is just the case with mine, said the hatter.
• 1:29:08
Speaker 2: Alice felt dreadfully puzzled. The hatter's remark seemed to have
• 1:29:12
Speaker 2: no sort of meaning in it, and yet it was
• 1:29:15
Speaker 2: certainly English. I don't quite understand you, she said, as
• 1:29:21
Speaker 2: politely as she could. The dormouse is asleep again, said
• 1:29:26
Speaker 2: the hatter, and he poured a little hot tea upon
• 1:29:29
Speaker 2: its nose. The dormouse shook its head impatiently and said,
• 1:29:34
Speaker 2: without opening its eyes. Of course, of course, just what
• 1:29:39
Speaker 2: I was going to remark myself. Have you guessed the
• 1:29:43
Speaker 2: riddle yet, the hatter said, turning to Alice again, No,
• 1:29:49
Speaker 2: I give it up. Alice replied, what's the answer? I
• 1:29:54
Speaker 2: haven't the slightest idea, said the hatter, Nor I said
• 1:29:59
Speaker 2: the march hare. Alice sighed wearily. I think you might
• 1:30:05
Speaker 2: do something better with the time, she said, van waste
• 1:30:08
Speaker 2: it in asking riddles that have no answers. If you
• 1:30:13
Speaker 2: knew time as well as I do, said the hatter.
• 1:30:16
  Speaker 2: You wouldn't talk about wasting it. It's him. I don't
• 1:30:22
Speaker 2: know what you mean, said Alice. Of course you don't,
• 1:30:27
Speaker 2: the hatter said, tossing his head contemptuously. I dare say
• 1:30:31
Speaker 2: you never even spoke to time. Perhaps not, Alice cautiously replied,
• 1:30:39
Speaker 2: But I know I have to beat time when I
• 1:30:41
Speaker 2: learn music. Ah, that accounts for it, said the hatter.
• 1:30:46
Speaker 2: He won't stand beating now. If you only kept on
• 1:30:50
Speaker 2: good terms with him, he'd do almost anything you liked
• 1:30:53
Speaker 2: with the clock. For instance, suppose it were nine o'clock
• 1:30:58
Speaker 2: in the morning, just time to begin lessons. You'd only
• 1:31:01
Speaker 2: have to whisper a hint to time, and round goes
• 1:31:05
Speaker 2: the clock in a twinkling half past one. Time for dinner.
• 1:31:10
Speaker 2: I only wish it was the march, hare said to
• 1:31:13
Speaker 2: itself in a whisper. That would be grand, certainly, said
• 1:31:18
Speaker 2: Alice thoughtfully. But then I shouldn't be hungry for it,
• 1:31:23
Speaker 2: you know, not at first, perhaps, said the hatter. But
• 1:31:28
Speaker 2: you could keep it to half past one as long
• 1:31:31
Speaker 2: as you liked. Is that the way you manage? Alice asked?
• 1:31:37
Speaker 2: The hatter shook his head mournfully. Not I, he replied.
• 1:31:43
Speaker 2: We quarreled last March, just before he went mad, you know,
• 1:31:47
Speaker 2: pointing with his teaspoon. At the March Hare it was
• 1:31:51
Speaker 2: at the great concert given by the Queen of Hearts,
• 1:31:54
Speaker 2: and I had to sing Twinkle Twinkle, little bat. How
• 1:31:58
Speaker 2: I wonder what you're at. You know the song? Perhaps
• 1:32:04
Speaker 2: I've heard something like it, said Alice. It goes on,
• 1:32:08
Speaker 2: you know, the hatter continued, in this way, up above
• 1:32:14
Speaker 2: the world, you fly like a tea tray in the sky.
• 1:32:18
Speaker 2: Twinkle twinkle. Here the dormouse shook itself and began singing
• 1:32:24
Speaker 2: in its sleep, Twinkle twinkle, twinkle twinkle, and went on
• 1:32:30
Speaker 2: so long that they had to pinch it to make
• 1:32:32
Speaker 2: it stop. Well, i'd hardly finished the first verse, said
• 1:32:38
Speaker 2: the hatter, when the Queen jumped up and bawled out.
• 1:32:42
Speaker 2: He's murdering the time off with his head, how dreadfully savage,
• 1:32:49
Speaker 2: exclaimed Alice. And ever since that, the hatter went on
• 1:32:54
Speaker 2: in a mournful tone. He won't do a thing I ask.
• 1:32:58
Speaker 2: It's always six o'clock. A bright idea came into Alice's head.
• 1:33:05
Speaker 2: Is that the reason so many tea things are put
• 1:33:08
Speaker 2: out here, she asked. Yes, that's it, said the hatter
• 1:33:13
Speaker 2: with a sigh. It's always tea time, and we've no
• 1:33:17
Speaker 2: time to wash the things between whiles, then you keep
• 1:33:21
Speaker 2: moving round, I suppose, said Alice. Exactly so, said the hatter,
• 1:33:28
Speaker 2: as the things get used up. But what happens when
• 1:33:33
Speaker 2: you come to the beginning again? Alice ventured to ask,
• 1:33:38
Speaker 2: suppose we change the subject. The march hare interrupted, yawning,
• 1:33:42
Speaker 2: I'm getting tired of this. I vote the young lady
• 1:33:45
  Speaker 2: tells us a story. I'm afraid I don't know one,
• 1:33:49
Speaker 2: said Alice, rather alarmed at the proposal. Then the dormouse shall,
• 1:33:56
Speaker 2: They both cried, Wake up, dormouse, and they pinched it
• 1:34:00
Speaker 2: on both sides at once. The dormouse slowly opened his eyes.
• 1:34:06
Speaker 2: I wasn't asleep, he said, in a hoarse, feeble voice.
• 1:34:11
Speaker 2: I heard every word you fellows were saying. Tell us
• 1:34:16
Speaker 2: a story, said the march hare. Yes, please do, pleaded Alice.
• 1:34:22
Speaker 2: And be quick about it, added the hatter, or you'll
• 1:34:25
Speaker 2: be asleep again before it's done. Once upon a time
• 1:34:29
Speaker 2: there were three little sisters. The dormouse began in a
• 1:34:33
Speaker 2: great hurry, and their names were Elsie, Lacy, and Tilly,
• 1:34:39
Speaker 2: and they lived at the bottom of a well. What
• 1:34:43
Speaker 2: did they live on, said Alice, who always took a
• 1:34:46
Speaker 2: great interest in questions of eating and drinking. They lived
• 1:34:52
Speaker 2: on treacle, said the dormouse, after thinking a minute or two.
• 1:34:58
Speaker 2: They couldn't have done that, you know, Alice gently remarked.
• 1:35:02
Speaker 2: They'd have been ill. So they were, said the dormouse,
• 1:35:08
Speaker 2: very ill. Alice tried to fancy to herself what such
• 1:35:13
Speaker 2: an extraordinary way of living would be like, but it
• 1:35:16
Speaker 2: puzzled her too much, so she went on, but why
• 1:35:21
Speaker 2: did they live at the bottom of a well? Take
• 1:35:24
Speaker 2: some more tea? The march hare said to Alice, very earnestly.
• 1:35:29
Speaker 2: I've had nothing yet, Alice replied in an offended tone,
• 1:35:34
Speaker 2: So I can't take more? You mean you can't take less,
• 1:35:39
Speaker 2: said the hatter. It's very easy to take more than nothing.
• 1:35:44
Speaker 2: Nobody asked your opinion, said Alice, who's making personal remarks now,
• 1:35:51
Speaker 2: the hatter asked, triumphantly. Alice did not quite know what
• 1:35:56
Speaker 2: to say to this, so she helped herself to some
• 1:35:59
Speaker 2: tea and bread and butter, and then turned to the
• 1:36:02
Speaker 2: dormouse and repeated her question, why did they live at
• 1:36:06
Speaker 2: the bottom of a well. The dormouse again took a
• 1:36:11
Speaker 2: minute or two to think about it, and then said
• 1:36:14
Speaker 2: it was a treacle. Well, there's no such thing. Alice
• 1:36:19
Speaker 2: was beginning very angrily, but the hatter and the march
• 1:36:23
Speaker 2: hare went shh, and the dormouse sulkily remarked, if you
• 1:36:29
Speaker 2: can't be civil, you'd better finish the story for yourself. No,
• 1:36:34
Speaker 2: please go on, Alice said, very humbly. I won't interrupt again.
• 1:36:40
Speaker 2: I dare say there may be one one indeed, said
• 1:36:44
Speaker 2: the dormouse indignantly. However, he consented to go on. And
• 1:36:50
Speaker 2: so these three little sisters they were learning to draw.
• 1:36:53
Speaker 2: You know what did they draw? Said Alice, quite forgetting
• 1:36:58
Speaker 2: her promise. Treacle, said the dormouse, without considering at all
• 1:37:04
Speaker 2: this time. I want a clean cup, interrupted the hatter.
• 1:37:09
Speaker 2: Let's all move one place.
• 1:37:11
  Speaker 10: On.
• 1:37:12
Speaker 2: He moved on as he spoke, and the dormouse followed him.
• 1:37:16
Speaker 2: The march hare moved into the dormouse's place, and Alice
• 1:37:20
Speaker 2: rather unwillingly took the place of the march hare. The
• 1:37:24
Speaker 2: hatter was the only one who got any advantage from
• 1:37:26
Speaker 2: the change, and Alice was a good deal worse off
• 1:37:29
Speaker 2: than before. As the march hare had just upset the
• 1:37:32
Speaker 2: milk jug into his plate. Alice did not wish to
• 1:37:37
Speaker 2: offend the dormouse again, so she began very cautiously. But
• 1:37:42
Speaker 2: I don't understand where did they draw the treacle from.
• 1:37:48
Speaker 2: You can draw water out of a water well, said
• 1:37:51
Speaker 2: the hatter, So I should think you could draw a
• 1:37:53
Speaker 2: treacle out of a treacle. Well, eh, stupid, But they
• 1:37:58
Speaker 2: were in the well, Alice said to the dormouse, not
• 1:38:02
Speaker 2: choosing to notice this last remark. Of course they were,
• 1:38:06
Speaker 2: said the dormouse. Well in this answer so confused poor
• 1:38:13
Speaker 2: Alice that she let the dormouse go on for some
• 1:38:16
Speaker 2: time without interrupting it. They were learning to draw. The
• 1:38:21
Speaker 2: dormouse went on, yawning and rubbing its eyes, for it
• 1:38:26
Speaker 2: was getting very sleepy, and they drew all manner of things,
• 1:38:31
Speaker 2: everything that begins with an M. Why with an M,
• 1:38:36
Speaker 2: said Alice, Why not, said the march hare. Alice was silent.
• 1:38:43
Speaker 2: The dormouse had closed its eyes by this time and
• 1:38:46
Speaker 2: was going off into a doze, But on being pinched
• 1:38:50
Speaker 2: by the hatter, it woke up again with a little
• 1:38:52
Speaker 2: shriek and went on that begins with an M, such
• 1:38:57
Speaker 2: as mouse traps, and the and memory and muchness. You know,
• 1:39:05
Speaker 2: you say things are much of a muchness? Did you
• 1:39:08
Speaker 2: ever see such a thing as a drawing of a muchness? Really?
• 1:39:13
Speaker 2: Now you ask me, said Alice, very much confused. I
• 1:39:18
Speaker 2: don't think then you shouldn't talk, said the hatter. This
• 1:39:25
Speaker 2: piece of rudeness was more than Alice could bear. She
• 1:39:29
Speaker 2: got up in great disgust and walked off. The dormouse
• 1:39:32
Speaker 2: fell asleep instantly, and neither of the others took the
• 1:39:36
Speaker 2: least notice of her going, though she looked back once
• 1:39:39
Speaker 2: or twice, half hoping that they would call after her.
• 1:39:44
Speaker 2: The last time she saw them, they were trying to
• 1:39:46
Speaker 2: put the dormouse into the teapot. At any rate, I'll
• 1:39:51
Speaker 2: never go there again, said Alice, as she picked her
• 1:39:54
Speaker 2: way through the wood. It's the stupidest tea party I
• 1:39:58
Speaker 2: ever was at in all my Just as she said this,
• 1:40:04
Speaker 2: she noticed that one of the trees had a door
• 1:40:06
Speaker 2: leading right into it. That's very curious, she thought, But
• 1:40:11
Speaker 2: everything's curious to day. I think I may as well
• 1:40:14
Speaker 2: go in at once. And in she went once more.
• 1:40:20
Speaker 2: She found herself in the long hall and close to
• 1:40:24
Speaker 2: the little glass table. Now I'll manage better this time,
• 1:40:28
Speaker 2: she said to herself, and began by taking the little
• 1:40:32
Speaker 2: golden key and unlocking the door that led into the garden.
• 1:40:37
Speaker 2: Then she went to work, nibbling at the mushroom. She
• 1:40:40
Speaker 2: had kept a piece of it in her pocket till
• 1:40:43
Speaker 2: she was about a foot high. Then she walked down
• 1:40:46
Speaker 2: the little passage, and then she found herself at last
• 1:40:51
Speaker 2: in the beautiful garden, among the bright flower beds and
• 1:40:55
Speaker 2: the cool fountains. End of chapter six, Chapter eight, The
• 1:41:01
Speaker 2: Queen's croquet ground. A large rose tree stood near the
• 1:41:07
Speaker 2: entrance of the garden. The roses growing on it were white,
• 1:41:10
Speaker 2: but there were three gardeners at it, busily painting them red.
• 1:41:14
Speaker 2: Alice thought this a very curious thing, and she went
• 1:41:16
Speaker 2: nearer to watch them, And just as she came up
• 1:41:19
Speaker 2: to them, she heard one of them say, look out, now, Five,
• 1:41:22
Speaker 2: don't go splashing paint all over me like that. I
• 1:41:25
Speaker 2: couldn't help it, said five, in a sulky tone. Seven
• 1:41:28
Speaker 2: jogged my elbow, on which seven looked up and said,
• 1:41:32
Speaker 2: that's right. Five, always lay the blame on others. You'd
• 1:41:36
Speaker 2: better not talk, said five. I heard the queen say,
• 1:41:39
Speaker 2: only yesterday, you deserve to be beheaded. What four said
• 1:41:44
Speaker 2: the one who had spoken first. That's none of your business, too,
• 1:41:49
Speaker 2: said seven. Yes, it is his business, said five, And
• 1:41:53
Speaker 2: I'll tell him it was for bringing the cook tulip
• 1:41:56
Speaker 2: brutes instead of onions. Seven flung down his breath and
• 1:42:00
Speaker 2: had just begun well of all the unjust things, when
• 1:42:05
Speaker 2: his eye chanced to fall upon Alice as she stood
• 1:42:07
Speaker 2: watching them, and he checked himself. Suddenly the others looked
• 1:42:11
Speaker 2: round also, and all of them bowed low. Would you
• 1:42:15
Speaker 2: tell me, said Alice a little timidly. Why are you
• 1:42:18
  Speaker 2: painting those roses?
• 1:42:21
  Speaker 3: Five?
• 1:42:21
Speaker 1: And seven said nothing, but looked at two. Two began
• 1:42:25
Speaker 1: in a low voice. Why the fact is, you see, miss,
• 1:42:30
Speaker 1: this yere ought to have been a red rose tree,
• 1:42:33
Speaker 1: and we put a white one in by mistake.
• 1:42:35
Speaker 6: And if the Queen was.
• 1:42:36
Speaker 1: To find out, we should all have our heads cut off,
• 1:42:38
Speaker 1: you know. So you see, miss, we're doing our best
• 1:42:41
Speaker 1: before she comes to At this moment, five, who'd been
• 1:42:45
Speaker 1: anxiously looking across the garden, called out the queen. The
• 1:42:49
Speaker 1: queen and the three gardeners instantly threw themselves flat upon
• 1:42:53
Speaker 1: their faces. There was a sound of many footsteps, and
• 1:42:56
Speaker 1: Alice looked round, eager to see the queen. First came
• 1:43:01
Speaker 1: ten soldiers carrying clubs. They were all shaped like the
• 1:43:04
Speaker 1: three gardeners, oblong and flat, with their hands and feet
• 1:43:07
Speaker 1: at the corners. Next the ten courtiers. These were ornamented
• 1:43:11
Speaker 1: all over with diamonds and walked two and two as
• 1:43:14
Speaker 1: the soldiers did. After these came the royal children. There
• 1:43:18
Speaker 1: were ten of them, and the little deers came, jumping
• 1:43:20
Speaker 1: merrily along hand in hand in couples. They were all
• 1:43:23
Speaker 1: ornamented with hearts. Next came the guests, mostly kings and queens,
• 1:43:28
Speaker 1: and among them Alice recognized the white rabbit. It was
• 1:43:31
Speaker 1: talking in a hurried, nervous manner, smiling at everything that
• 1:43:34
Speaker 1: was said, and went by without noticing her. Then followed
• 1:43:39
Speaker 1: the Knave of Hearts, carrying the King's crown on a
• 1:43:41
Speaker 1: crimson velvet cushion. And last of all this grand procession
• 1:43:45
Speaker 1: came the King and Queen of Hearts. Alice was rather
• 1:43:49
Speaker 1: doubtful whether she ought not lie down on her face
• 1:43:51
Speaker 1: like the three gardeners, but she could not remember ever
• 1:43:54
Speaker 1: having heard of such a rule of processions, And besides,
• 1:43:57
Speaker 1: what would be the use of a procession? Thought she
• 1:43:59
Speaker 1: if people all had to lie down upon their faces
• 1:44:02
Speaker 1: so they couldn't see it, So she stood still where
• 1:44:05
Speaker 1: she was and waited. When the procession came opposite to Alice,
• 1:44:09
Speaker 1: they all stopped and looked at her, and the Queen
• 1:44:11
Speaker 1: said severely, who is this? She said it to the
• 1:44:15
Speaker 1: knave of Hearts, who only bowed and smiled in reply. Idiot,
• 1:44:19
Speaker 1: said the queen, tossing her head impatiently, and turning to Alice,
• 1:44:23
Speaker 1: she went on, what's your name?
• 1:44:24
  Speaker 6: Child?
• 1:44:25
Speaker 1: My name is Alice, so please, your majesty, said Alice
• 1:44:28
Speaker 1: very politely, But she added to herself, why they're only
• 1:44:31
Speaker 1: a pack of cards, after all, I needn't be afraid
• 1:44:33
Speaker 1: of them. And who are these? Said the queen, pointing
• 1:44:38
Speaker 1: to the three gardeners who were lying round the rose tree.
• 1:44:40
Speaker 1: For you see, as they were all lying on their
• 1:44:42
Speaker 1: faces and the pattern on their backs was the same
• 1:44:44
Speaker 1: as the rest of the pack, she could not tell
• 1:44:47
Speaker 1: whether they were her gardeners, or soldiers, or courtiers, or
• 1:44:49
Speaker 1: three of her own children. How should I know, said Alice,
• 1:44:54
Speaker 1: surprised at her own courage. It's no business of mine.
• 1:44:58
Speaker 1: The queen turned crimson with fear, and after glaring at
• 1:45:01
Speaker 1: her for a moment like a wild beast, screamed off
• 1:45:04
Speaker 1: with her head off. Nonsense, said Alice, very loudly and decidedly,
• 1:45:09
Speaker 1: and the Queen was silent. The King laid his hand
• 1:45:12
Speaker 1: upon her arm and timidly said, consider, my dear, she
• 1:45:15
Speaker 1: is only a child. The Queen turned angrily away from
• 1:45:19
Speaker 1: him and said to the knave, turn them over. The
• 1:45:22
Speaker 1: knave did so, very carefully with one foot. Get up,
• 1:45:28
Speaker 1: said the Queen in a shrill, loud voice, and the
• 1:45:30
Speaker 1: three gardeners instantly jumped up and began bowing to the King,
• 1:45:33
Speaker 1: the Queen, the royal children and everybody else. Leave off that,
• 1:45:37
Speaker 1: screamed the Queen. You make me giddy, and then turning
• 1:45:41
Speaker 1: to the rose tree, she went on, what have you
• 1:45:43
Speaker 1: been doing here? Nay it please, Your Majesty said too,
• 1:45:47
Speaker 1: in a very humble tone, going down on one knee
• 1:45:50
Speaker 1: as he spoke. We were trying, I see, said the Queen,
• 1:45:54
Speaker 1: who had meanwhile been examining the roses off with their heads,
• 1:45:58
Speaker 1: and the procession moved on. Three of the soldiers remaining
• 1:46:01
Speaker 1: behind to execute the unfortunate gardeners, who ran to Alice
• 1:46:04
Speaker 1: for protection. You shan't be beheaded, said Alice, and She
• 1:46:08
Speaker 1: put them into a large flower pot that stood near
• 1:46:11
Speaker 1: the three soldiers wandered about for a minute or two
• 1:46:13
Speaker 1: looking for them, and then quietly marched off. After the
• 1:46:16
Speaker 1: others are their heads off, shouted the Queen. Their heads
• 1:46:21
Speaker 1: are gone. If it please your majesty, the soldiers shouted
• 1:46:23
Speaker 1: in reply. That's right, shouted the Queen. Can you play croquet?
• 1:46:29
Speaker 1: The soldiers were silent and looked at Alice as the
• 1:46:31
Speaker 1: question was evidently meant for her. Yes, shouted Alice. Come on,
• 1:46:36
Speaker 1: then roared the queen, and Alice joined the procession, wondering
• 1:46:40
Speaker 1: very much what would happen next. It's a very fine dah,
• 1:46:44
Speaker 1: said a timid voice at her side. She was walking
• 1:46:47
Speaker 1: by the white rabbit, who was peeping anxiously into her face.
• 1:46:51
Speaker 1: Very said Alice, where's the duchess? Sh sh said the
• 1:46:55
Speaker 1: rabbit in a low, hurried tone. He looked anxiously over
• 1:46:58
Speaker 1: his shoulder as he spoke, and then and raised himself
• 1:47:00
Speaker 1: upon tiptoe, put his mouth close to her ear and whispered,
• 1:47:03
Speaker 1: She's under sentence of execution.
• 1:47:07
Speaker 6: What for, said Alice?
• 1:47:09
Speaker 1: Did you say? What a pity? The rabbit asked, No,
• 1:47:13
  Speaker 1: I didn't, said Alice. I don't think it's at all
• 1:47:15
Speaker 1: a pity, I said, what for she boxed the Queen's ears,
• 1:47:20
Speaker 1: the rabbit began. Alice gave a little scream of laughter.
• 1:47:23
Speaker 1: Oh hush, the rabbit whispered in a frightened tone.
• 1:47:27
Speaker 3: The queen hear you.
• 1:47:28
Speaker 1: You see she came rather late, And the queen said,
• 1:47:31
Speaker 1: get to your places, shouted the queen in a voice
• 1:47:34
Speaker 1: of thunder, And people began running about in all directions,
• 1:47:38
Speaker 1: tumbling up against each other. However, they got settled down
• 1:47:41
Speaker 1: in a minute or two, and the game began. Alice
• 1:47:44
Speaker 1: thought she had never seen such a curious croquet ground
• 1:47:47
Speaker 1: in her life. It was all ridges and furrows. The
• 1:47:50
Speaker 1: balls were live hedgehogs, the mallets live flamingoes, and the
• 1:47:53
Speaker 1: soldiers had to double themselves up and to stand on
• 1:47:55
Speaker 1: their hands and feet to make the arches. The chief
• 1:47:58
Speaker 1: difficulty Alice found it first was in managing her flamingo.
• 1:48:02
Speaker 1: She succeeded in getting its body tucked away comfortably enough
• 1:48:04
Speaker 1: under her arm, with its legs hanging down, but generally,
• 1:48:07
Speaker 1: just as she got its neck nicely straightened out, and
• 1:48:10
Speaker 1: was going to give the hedgehog a blow with its head,
• 1:48:12
Speaker 1: it would twist itself round and look up in her
• 1:48:14
Speaker 1: face with such a puzzled expression that she could not
• 1:48:17
Speaker 1: help bursting out laughing. And when she got its head
• 1:48:20
Speaker 1: down and she was going to begin again, it was
• 1:48:23
Speaker 1: very provoking to find that the hedgehog had unrolled itself
• 1:48:25
Speaker 1: and was in the act of crawling away. Besides all this,
• 1:48:28
Speaker 1: there was generally a ridge or furrow in the way
• 1:48:30
Speaker 1: wherever she wanted to send the hedgehog to, and as
• 1:48:33
Speaker 1: the doubled up soldiers were always getting up and walking
• 1:48:35
Speaker 1: off to other parts of the ground, Alice soon came
• 1:48:38
Speaker 1: to the conclusion that it was a very difficult game. Indeed,
• 1:48:42
Speaker 1: the players all played at once without waiting for turns,
• 1:48:45
Speaker 1: quarreling all the while and fighting for the hedgehogs. And
• 1:48:48
Speaker 1: in a very short time the queen was in a
• 1:48:50
Speaker 1: furious fashion and went stamping about and shouting off with
• 1:48:54
Speaker 1: his head off with her head about once in a minute.
• 1:48:58
Speaker 1: Alice began to feel very uneasy. To be sure, she
• 1:49:01
Speaker 1: had not as yet had any dispute with the queen,
• 1:49:03
Speaker 1: but she knew that it might happen any minute, and
• 1:49:05
Speaker 1: then thought she what would become of me? They're dreadfully
• 1:49:09
Speaker 1: fond of be hiding people here. The great wonder is
• 1:49:11
Speaker 1: that there's any one left alive. She was looking about
• 1:49:14
Speaker 1: for some way of escape and wondering whether she could
• 1:49:17
Speaker 1: get away without being seen, when she noticed a curious
• 1:49:20
Speaker 1: appearance in the air. It puzzled her very much at first,
• 1:49:23
Speaker 1: but after watching it a minute or two, she made
• 1:49:25
Speaker 1: it out to be a grin, and she said to herself.
• 1:49:28
Speaker 1: It's the chesher cat. Now I shall have somebody to
• 1:49:31
Speaker 1: talk to. How are you getting on? Said the cat,
• 1:49:34
Speaker 1: as soon as there was mouth enough for it to
• 1:49:35
Speaker 1: speak with. Alice waited till the eyes appeared, and then nodded.
• 1:49:40
Speaker 1: It's no use speaking to it, she thought, till its
• 1:49:42
Speaker 1: years have come, or at least one of them. In
• 1:49:45
Speaker 1: another minute, the whole head appeared, and then Alice put
• 1:49:48
Speaker 1: down her flamingo and began an account of the game,
• 1:49:51
Speaker 1: feeling very glad she had some one to listen to her.
• 1:49:54
Speaker 1: The cat seemed to think that there was enough of
• 1:49:56
Speaker 1: it now in sight, and no more of it appeared.
• 1:49:59
Speaker 1: I don't think they've they at all fairly, Alice began,
• 1:50:02
Speaker 1: in rather a complaining tone, and they all quarrel so
• 1:50:05
Speaker 1: dreadfully one can't hear one's self speak. And they don't
• 1:50:08
Speaker 1: seem to have any rules in particular, at least if
• 1:50:10
Speaker 1: there are, nobody attends to them. And you've no idea.
• 1:50:14
Speaker 1: How confusing it is all the things being alive. For instance,
• 1:50:17
Speaker 1: there's the arch I've got to go through next, walking
• 1:50:20
Speaker 1: about at the other end of the ground, and I
• 1:50:22
Speaker 1: should have crockaded the queen's hedgehog just now, only it
• 1:50:24
Speaker 1: ran away when it saw mine coming. How do you
• 1:50:27
Speaker 1: like the queen, said the cat in a low voice.
• 1:50:31
Speaker 1: Not at all, said Alice. She's so extremely Just then
• 1:50:37
Speaker 1: she noticed that the Queen was close behind her, listening,
• 1:50:39
Speaker 1: so she went on likely to win, that it's hardly
• 1:50:42
Speaker 1: worth while finishing the game. The queen smiled and passed on.
• 1:50:48
Speaker 1: Who are you talking to? Said the King, going up
• 1:50:50
Speaker 1: to Alice and looking at the cat's head with great curiosity.
• 1:50:54
Speaker 1: It's a friend of mine, a chesha cat, said Alice.
• 1:50:57
Speaker 1: Allow me to introduce it. I don't like the of
• 1:51:00
Speaker 1: it at all, said the king. However, it may kiss
• 1:51:03
Speaker 1: my hand if it likes and rather not, the cat remarked.
• 1:51:07
Speaker 1: Don't be impertinent, said the king, and don't look at
• 1:51:10
Speaker 1: me like that. He got behind Alice as he spoke,
• 1:51:14
Speaker 1: A cat may look at a king, said Alice. I've
• 1:51:16
Speaker 1: read that in some book, but I don't remember where. Well,
• 1:51:20
Speaker 1: it must be removed, said the king very decidedly, and
• 1:51:23
Speaker 1: he called the Queen, who was passing at the moment,
• 1:51:25
Speaker 1: my dear, I wish you would have this cat removed.
• 1:51:29
Speaker 1: The queen had only one way of settling all difficulties
• 1:51:31
Speaker 1: great or small. Off with his head, she said, without
• 1:51:35
Speaker 1: even looking round. I'll fetch the executioner myself, said the
• 1:51:38
Speaker 1: king eagerly, and he hurried off. Alice thought she might
• 1:51:43
Speaker 1: as well go back and see how the game was
• 1:51:44
Speaker 1: going on, as she heard the queen's voice in the distance,
• 1:51:47
Speaker 1: screaming with passion. She'd already heard her sentence three of
• 1:51:50
Speaker 1: the players to be executed for having missed their turns,
• 1:51:53
Speaker 1: and she did not like the look of things at all,
• 1:51:55
Speaker 1: as the game was in such confusion that she never
• 1:51:57
Speaker 1: knew whether it was her turn or not, so she
• 1:51:59
Speaker 1: went in search of her hedgehog. The hedgehog was engaged
• 1:52:02
Speaker 1: in a fight with another hedgehog, which seemed to Alice
• 1:52:04
Speaker 1: an excellent opportunity for croqueting one of them with the other.
• 1:52:08
Speaker 1: The only difficulty was that her flamingo was gone across
• 1:52:10
Speaker 1: to the other side of the garden, where Alice could
• 1:52:13
Speaker 1: see it trying in a helpless sort of way to
• 1:52:14
Speaker 1: fly up into a tree. By the time she had
• 1:52:17
Speaker 1: caught the flamingo and brought it back, the fight was
• 1:52:19
Speaker 1: over and both the hedgehogs were out of sight. But
• 1:52:22
Speaker 1: it doesn't matter much, thought Alice, as all the arches
• 1:52:25
Speaker 1: are gone from this side of the ground, so she
• 1:52:27
Speaker 1: tucked it away under her arm that it might not
• 1:52:29
Speaker 1: escape again, and went back for a little more conversation
• 1:52:32
Speaker 1: with her friend. When she got back to the tessure cat,
• 1:52:35
Speaker 1: she was surprised to find quite a large crowd collected
• 1:52:38
Speaker 1: around it. There was a dispute going on between the executioner,
• 1:52:41
Speaker 1: the king, and the Queen, who were all talking at once,
• 1:52:44
Speaker 1: while all the rest were quite silent and looked very uncomfortable.
• 1:52:48
Speaker 1: The moment Alice appeared, she was appealed to by all
• 1:52:50
Speaker 1: three to settle the question, and they repeated their arguments
• 1:52:53
Speaker 1: to her, though as they all spoke at once, she
• 1:52:56
Speaker 1: found it very hard indeed to make out exactly what
• 1:52:58
Speaker 1: they said. The execute sher's argument was you couldn't cut
• 1:53:01
Speaker 1: off a head unless there was a body to cut
• 1:53:03
Speaker 1: it off from that he had never had to do
• 1:53:06
Speaker 1: such a thing before, and he wasn't going to begin
• 1:53:08
Speaker 1: at his time of life. The king's argument was that
• 1:53:11
Speaker 1: anything that had a head could be beheaded, and that
• 1:53:14
Speaker 1: you weren't to talk nonsense. The queen's argument was that
• 1:53:18
Speaker 1: if something wasn't done about it in less than no time,
• 1:53:20
Speaker 1: she'd had everybody executed all around. It was this last
• 1:53:24
Speaker 1: remark that had made the whole party look so grave
• 1:53:26
Speaker 1: and anxious. Alice could think of nothing else to say.
• 1:53:30
Speaker 1: But it belongs to the Duchess. You'd better ask her
• 1:53:33
Speaker 1: about it. She's in prison, the queen said to the executioner,
• 1:53:37
Speaker 1: fetch her here, and the executioner went off like an arrow.
• 1:53:40
Speaker 1: The cat's head began fading away the moment he was gone,
• 1:53:43
Speaker 1: and by the time he had come back with the Duchess,
• 1:53:46
Speaker 1: it had entirely disappeared. So the king and the executioner
• 1:53:49
Speaker 1: ran wildly up and down looking for it, while the
• 1:53:52
Speaker 1: rest of the party went back to the game. End
• 1:53:56
  Speaker 1: of chapter eight.
• 1:53:57
Speaker 4: Chapter nine, the mocked her story. You can't think how
• 1:54:03
Speaker 4: glad I am to see you again, you dear old thing,
• 1:54:07
Speaker 4: said the Duchess as she tucked her arm affectionately into
• 1:54:11
Speaker 4: Alice's and they walked off together. Alice was very glad
• 1:54:16
Speaker 4: to find her in such a pleasant temper, and thought
• 1:54:19
Speaker 4: to herself that perhaps it was only the pepper that
• 1:54:22
Speaker 4: had made her so savage when they met in the kitchen.
• 1:54:25
Speaker 4: When I'm a duchess, she said to herself, not in
• 1:54:29
Speaker 4: a very hopeful tone, though I won't have any pepper
• 1:54:33
Speaker 4: in my kitchen at all. Soup does very well without.
• 1:54:38
Speaker 4: Maybe it's always pepper that makes people hot tempered. She
• 1:54:42
Speaker 4: went on, very much pleased at having found out a
• 1:54:45
Speaker 4: new kind of rule. And vinegar that makes them sour,
• 1:54:50
Speaker 4: and camomeal that makes them bitter, and and barley sugar,
• 1:54:54
Speaker 4: and such things that make children sweet tempered. I only
• 1:54:57
Speaker 4: wish people knew that, then they wouldn't be so stingy
• 1:55:00
Speaker 4: about it. You know. She had quite forgotten the Duchess
• 1:55:04
Speaker 4: by this time, and was a little startled when she
• 1:55:06
Speaker 4: heard her voice close to her ear. You're thinking about something,
• 1:55:11
Speaker 4: my dear, and that makes you forget to talk. I
• 1:55:14
Speaker 4: can't tell you just now what the moral of that is,
• 1:55:17
Speaker 4: but I shall remember it in a bit. Perhaps it
• 1:55:20
Speaker 4: hasn't one, Alice ventured to remark. Tout hot child, said
• 1:55:26
Speaker 4: the Duchess. Everything's got a moral, if only you can
• 1:55:29
Speaker 4: find it, and she squeezed herself up closer to Alice's
• 1:55:33
Speaker 4: side as she spoke. Alice did not much like keeping
• 1:55:37
Speaker 4: so close to her, first because the duchess was very ugly,
• 1:55:41
Speaker 4: and secondly because she was exactly the right height to
• 1:55:44
Speaker 4: rest her chin upon Alice's shoulder, and it was an
• 1:55:47
Speaker 4: uncomfortably sharp chin. However, she did not like to be rude,
• 1:55:51
Speaker 4: so she bored as well as she could. The game's
• 1:55:54
Speaker 4: going on rather better now, she said, by way of
• 1:55:58
Speaker 4: keeping up the conversation, A little tis, so, said the Duchess.
• 1:56:02
Speaker 4: And the moral of that is, oh tis love. Tis
• 1:56:06
Speaker 4: love that makes the world go round, somebody, said, Alice
• 1:56:11
Speaker 4: whispered that it's done by everybody minding their own business.
• 1:56:16
Speaker 4: Ah well, it means much the same thing, said the Duchess,
• 1:56:20
Speaker 4: digging her sharp little chin into Alice's shoulder as she added.
• 1:56:25
Speaker 4: And the moral of that is take care of the sense,
• 1:56:29
Speaker 4: and the sounds will take care of themselves. How fond
• 1:56:32
Speaker 4: she is of finding morals in things, Alice thought to herself,
• 1:56:37
  Speaker 4: I dare say you're wondering why I don't put my
• 1:56:40
Speaker 4: arm round your waist, the Duchess said, after a pause.
• 1:56:43
Speaker 4: The reason is that I'm doubtful about the temper of
• 1:56:46
Speaker 4: your flamingo. Shall I try the experiment he might bite?
• 1:56:53
Speaker 4: Alice cautiously replied, not feeling at all anxious to have
• 1:56:57
Speaker 4: the experiment tried. Very true, said the Duchess. Flamingoes and
• 1:57:02
Speaker 4: mustard both bite. And the moral of that is birds
• 1:57:06
Speaker 4: of a feather flock together. Only mustard isn't a bird,
• 1:57:11
Speaker 4: Alice remarked. Right as usual, said the Duchess. What a
• 1:57:15
Speaker 4: clear way you have of putting things. It's a mineral,
• 1:57:19
Speaker 4: I think, said Alice. Of course it is, said the Duchess,
• 1:57:24
Speaker 4: who seemed ready to agree to everything that Alice said.
• 1:57:27
Speaker 4: There's a large mustard mine near here, and the moral
• 1:57:31
Speaker 4: of that is, the more there is of mine, the
• 1:57:34
Speaker 4: less there is of yours. Oh I know, exclaimed Alice,
• 1:57:39
Speaker 4: who had not attended to this last remark. It's a vegetable.
• 1:57:43
Speaker 4: It doesn't look like one, but it is. I quite
• 1:57:47
Speaker 4: agree with you, said the Duchess. And the moral of
• 1:57:50
Speaker 4: that is be what you would seem to be, or
• 1:57:54
Speaker 4: if you'd like it put more simply, never imagine yourself
• 1:57:58
Speaker 4: not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others.
• 1:58:01
Speaker 4: That what you were or might have been was not
• 1:58:04
Speaker 4: otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to
• 1:58:07
Speaker 4: them to be otherwise. I think I should understand that better,
• 1:58:14
Speaker 4: Alice said, very politely, if I had it written down.
• 1:58:19
Speaker 4: But I can't quite follow it as you say it.
• 1:58:23
Speaker 4: That's nothing to what I could say if I chose.
• 1:58:26
Speaker 4: The Duchess replied, in a pleased tone. Pray, don't trouble
• 1:58:30
Speaker 4: yourself to say it any longer than that, said Alice. Oh,
• 1:58:34
Speaker 4: don't talk about trouble, said the Duchess. I make you
• 1:58:37
Speaker 4: a present of everything I've said as yet, a cheap
• 1:58:40
Speaker 4: sort of present, thought Alice. I'm glad they don't give
• 1:58:43
Speaker 4: birthday presents like that, But she did not venture to
• 1:58:47
Speaker 4: say it out loud. Thinking again, the Duchess asked, with
• 1:58:51
Speaker 4: another dig of her sharp little chin. I've a right
• 1:58:55
Speaker 4: to think, said Alice, sharply, for she was beginning to
• 1:58:58
Speaker 4: feel a little worried. Just about as much right, said
• 1:59:02
Speaker 4: the Duchess, as pigs have to fly and the moral
• 1:59:07
Speaker 4: But here, to Alice's great surprise, the Duchess's voice died
• 1:59:11
Speaker 4: away even in the middle of her favorite word moral,
• 1:59:14
Speaker 4: and the arm that was linked into hers began to tremble.
• 1:59:17
Speaker 4: Alice looked up and there stood the Queen in front
• 1:59:20
Speaker 4: of them, with her arms folded, frowning like a thunder storm.
• 1:59:25
Speaker 4: A fine day, your majesty, the duchess began in a low,
• 1:59:30
  Speaker 4: weak voice.
• 1:59:31
Speaker 11: Now I give you fair warning, shouted the queen, stamping
• 1:59:36
Speaker 11: on the ground as she spoke. Either you or your
• 1:59:39
Speaker 11: head must be off, and that in about half no time.
• 1:59:43
Speaker 4: Take your choice. The duchess took her choice and was
• 1:59:47
Speaker 4: gone in a moment. Let's go on with the game,
• 1:59:50
Speaker 4: the queen said to Alice, and Alice was too much
• 1:59:54
Speaker 4: frightened to say a word, but slowly followed her back
• 1:59:57
Speaker 4: to the croquet ground. The other had taken advantage of
• 2:00:01
Speaker 4: the Queen's absence and were resting in the shade. However,
• 2:00:05
Speaker 4: the moment they saw her, they hurried back to the game,
• 2:00:08
Speaker 4: the queen merely remarking that a moment's delay would cost
• 2:00:11
Speaker 4: them their lives. All the time they were playing, the
• 2:00:14
Speaker 4: Queen never left off, quarreling with the other players and
• 2:00:17
Speaker 4: shouting off with his head or off with her head.
• 2:00:22
Speaker 4: Those whom she sentenced were taken into custody by the soldiers,
• 2:00:26
Speaker 4: who of course had to leave off being arches to
• 2:00:29
Speaker 4: do this, so that by the end of half an
• 2:00:31
Speaker 4: hour or so, there were no arches left, and all
• 2:00:34
Speaker 4: the players except the King, the Queen, and Alice were
• 2:00:38
Speaker 4: in custody and under sentence of execution. Then the Queen
• 2:00:42
Speaker 4: left off, quite out of breath, and said to Alice,
• 2:00:46
Speaker 4: have you seen the mock turtle yet? No, said Alice.
• 2:00:50
  Speaker 4: I don't even know what a mock turtle is. It's
• 2:00:53
Speaker 4: the thing mock turtle soup is made from, said the Queen.
• 2:00:57
Speaker 4: I never saw one or heard of one, said Alice.
• 2:01:01
Speaker 4: Come on, then, said the Queen, and he shall tell
• 2:01:04
Speaker 4: you his history. As they walked off together, Alice heard
• 2:01:07
Speaker 4: the King say, in a low voice to the company,
• 2:01:10
Speaker 4: generally you are all pardoned.
• 2:01:13
  Speaker 11: Come.
• 2:01:13
Speaker 4: That's a good thing, she said to herself, for she
• 2:01:16
Speaker 4: had felt quite unhappy at the number of executions the
• 2:01:19
Speaker 4: Queen had ordered. They very soon came upon a gryffin
• 2:01:23
Speaker 4: lying fast asleep in the sun. If you don't know
• 2:01:26
Speaker 4: what a gryffin is, look at the picture up, lazy thing,
• 2:01:30
Speaker 4: said the Queen, and take this young lady to see
• 2:01:33
Speaker 4: the mock turtle and to hear his history. I must
• 2:01:36
Speaker 4: go back and see after some executions I have ordered,
• 2:01:40
Speaker 4: And she walked off, leaving Alice alone with the gryffin.
• 2:01:43
Speaker 4: Alice did not quite like the look of the creature,
• 2:01:46
Speaker 4: but on the whole she thought it would be quite
• 2:01:48
Speaker 4: as safe to stay with it as to go after
• 2:01:50
Speaker 4: that savage queen. So she waited. The griffin sat up
• 2:01:55
Speaker 4: and rubbed its eyes. Then it watched the queen till
• 2:01:58
Speaker 4: she was out of sight. Then it what fun, said
• 2:02:02
Speaker 4: the griffin, half to itself after Alice. What is the fun?
• 2:02:06
Speaker 4: Said Alice? Why, she said the griffin. It's all her
• 2:02:10
Speaker 4: fancy that they never execute nobody, you know. Come on,
• 2:02:15
Speaker 4: everybody says, come on here, thought Alice, as she went
• 2:02:18
Speaker 4: slowly after it. I never was so ordered about in
• 2:02:21
Speaker 4: all my life. Never. They had not gone far before
• 2:02:25
Speaker 4: they saw the mock turtle in the distance, sitting sad
• 2:02:27
Speaker 4: and lonely on a little ledge of rock. And as
• 2:02:30
Speaker 4: they came nearer, Alice could hear him sighing, as if
• 2:02:33
Speaker 4: his heart would break. She pitied him deeply. What is
• 2:02:38
Speaker 4: his sorrow? She asked? The griffin and the gryffin answered
• 2:02:42
Speaker 4: very nearly in the same words as before. It's all
• 2:02:45
Speaker 4: his fancy that he hasn't got no sorrow, you know.
• 2:02:49
Speaker 4: Come on, So they went up to the mock turtle,
• 2:02:52
Speaker 4: who looked at them with large eyes full of tears,
• 2:02:56
Speaker 4: but said nothing. This here, young lady, said the griffin.
• 2:03:00
Speaker 4: She wants for to know your history. She do, I'll
• 2:03:04
Speaker 4: tell it her, said the mock turtle in a deep,
• 2:03:07
Speaker 4: hollow tone. Sit down, both of you, and don't speak
• 2:03:10
Speaker 4: a word till I've finished. So they sat down and
• 2:03:14
Speaker 4: nobody spoke for some minutes. Alice thought to herself, I
• 2:03:17
Speaker 4: don't see how he can even finish if he doesn't begin,
• 2:03:21
Speaker 4: but she waited patiently. Once said the mock turtle at last,
• 2:03:25
Speaker 4: with a deep sigh, I was a real turtle. These
• 2:03:30
Speaker 4: words were followed by a very long silence, broken only
• 2:03:33
Speaker 4: by an occasional exclamation of hump from the griffin and
• 2:03:37
Speaker 4: the constant heavy sobbing of the mock turtle. Alice was
• 2:03:41
Speaker 4: very nearly getting up and saying thank you, sir for
• 2:03:45
Speaker 4: your interesting story, but she could not help thinking there
• 2:03:50
Speaker 4: must be more to come, so she sat still and
• 2:03:52
Speaker 4: said nothing. When we were little, the mock turtle went on,
• 2:03:57
Speaker 4: at last, more calmly, those sobbing a little now. And
• 2:04:01
Speaker 4: then we went to school in the sea. The master
• 2:04:05
Speaker 4: was an old turtle. We used to call him tortoise.
• 2:04:09
Speaker 4: Why did you call him tortoise if he wasn't one,
• 2:04:12
Speaker 4: Alice asked. We called him tortoise because he taughtois, said
• 2:04:18
Speaker 4: the mock turtle angrily. Really, you are very dull. You
• 2:04:22
Speaker 4: ought to be ashamed of yourself for asking such a
• 2:04:25
Speaker 4: simple question, added the griffin, And then they both sat
• 2:04:29
Speaker 4: silent and looked at poor Alice, who felt ready to
• 2:04:31
Speaker 4: sink into the earth. At last, the griffin said to
• 2:04:35
Speaker 4: the mock turtle, drive on, old fellow, don't be all
• 2:04:38
Speaker 4: day about it. And he went on in these words, Yes,
• 2:04:43
Speaker 4: we went to school in the sea, though you mayn't
• 2:04:46
Speaker 4: believe it. I never said I didn't, interrupted Alice. You did,
• 2:04:52
Speaker 4: said the mock turtle. Hold your tongue, added the griffin.
• 2:04:56
Speaker 4: Before Alice could speak again, the mock turtle went on,
• 2:05:00
Speaker 4: we had the best of educations. In fact, we went
• 2:05:03
Speaker 4: to school every day. I've been to a day school too,
• 2:05:08
Speaker 4: said Alice. You needn't be so proud. As all that
• 2:05:12
Speaker 4: with extras, asked the mock turtle, a little anxiously. Yes,
• 2:05:16
Speaker 4: said Alice. We learned French and music and washing, said
• 2:05:22
Speaker 4: the mock turtle. Certainly not, said Alice indignantly. Ah, then
• 2:05:28
Speaker 4: yours wasn't a really good school, said the mock turtle
• 2:05:32
Speaker 4: in a tone of great relief. Now at hours they
• 2:05:36
Speaker 4: had at the end of the bill, French, music, and
• 2:05:40
Speaker 4: washing extra. You couldn't have wanted it much, said Alice,
• 2:05:46
Speaker 4: living at the bottom of the sea. I couldn't afford
• 2:05:50
Speaker 4: to learn it, said the mock turtle with a sigh.
• 2:05:53
Speaker 4: I only took the regular course. What was that, inquired Alice.
• 2:06:00
Speaker 4: Reeling and writhing, Of course, to begin with, the mock
• 2:06:04
Speaker 4: turtle replied, and then the different branches of arithmetic, ambition, distraction,
• 2:06:11
Speaker 4: uglification and derision. I never heard of uglification, Alice ventured
• 2:06:17
Speaker 4: to say, what is it? The griffin lifted up both
• 2:06:21
Speaker 4: its paws and surprise, what never heard of uglifying? It exclaimed.
• 2:06:27
Speaker 4: You know what to beautify is? I suppose, yes, said Alice, doubtfully.
• 2:06:33
Speaker 4: It means to make anything prettier. Well, then the griffin
• 2:06:40
Speaker 4: went on, if you don't know what to uglify is
• 2:06:42
Speaker 4: you are a simpleton. Alice did not feel encouraged to
• 2:06:47
Speaker 4: ask any more questions about it, so she turned to
• 2:06:50
Speaker 4: the mock turtle and said, what else had you to learn? Well?
• 2:06:54
Speaker 4: There was mystery, the mock turtle replied, counting off the
• 2:06:58
Speaker 4: subjects on his flat. Mystery ancient and modern, with seography,
• 2:07:05
Speaker 4: then drawling. The drawling master was an old conger eel
• 2:07:09
Speaker 4: that used to come once a week. He taught us drawling, stretching,
• 2:07:15
Speaker 4: and fainting in coils. What was that like? Said Alice. Well,
• 2:07:20
Speaker 4: I can't show it you myself. The mock turtle said,
• 2:07:23
Speaker 4: I'm too stiff. And the griffin never learned it had
• 2:07:28
Speaker 4: in time, said the griffin. I went to the classics master,
• 2:07:31
Speaker 4: though he was an old crab he was, I never
• 2:07:35
Speaker 4: went to him, the mock turtle said, with a sigh.
• 2:07:39
Speaker 4: He taught laughing in grief, they used to say, so
• 2:07:43
Speaker 4: he did, so he did, said the griffin, sighing in
• 2:07:46
Speaker 4: his turn. And both creatures hid their faces and their paws.
• 2:07:51
Speaker 4: And how many hours a day did you do lessons?
• 2:07:55
Speaker 4: Said Alice, in a hurry to change the subject. Ten
• 2:07:58
Speaker 4: hours the first day. The mock turtle nine the next,
• 2:08:01
Speaker 4: and so on. What a curious plan, exclaimed Alice. That's
• 2:08:07
Speaker 4: the reason they're called lessons, the griffin remarked, because they
• 2:08:11
Speaker 4: lessened from day to day. This was quite a new
• 2:08:14
Speaker 4: idea to Alice, and she thought it over a little
• 2:08:17
Speaker 4: before she made her next remark. Then the eleventh day
• 2:08:21
Speaker 4: must have been a holiday, of course, it was, said
• 2:08:25
Speaker 4: the mock turtle. And how did you manage on the twelfth?
• 2:08:29
Speaker 4: Alice went on eagerly. That's enough about lessons, the griffin interrupted,
• 2:08:35
Speaker 4: in a very decided tone. Tell her something about the
• 2:08:38
Speaker 4: games now. End of chapter nine.
• 2:08:43
Speaker 5: Chapter ten, the Lobster Quadrille. The mock turtle sighed deeply
• 2:08:52
Speaker 5: and drew the back of one flapper across his eyes.
• 2:08:58
Speaker 5: He looked at Alice and tried to speak, but for
• 2:09:04
Speaker 5: a minute or two, sobs choked his voice, same as
• 2:09:11
Speaker 5: if he had a bone in his throat, said the griffin,
• 2:09:16
Speaker 5: and it set to work shaking him and punching him
• 2:09:20
Speaker 5: in the back. At last, the mock turtle recovered his voice,
• 2:09:26
Speaker 5: and with tears running down his cheeks, he went on again.
• 2:09:35
Speaker 5: You may not have lived much under the sea, I haven't,
• 2:09:41
Speaker 5: said Alice. And perhaps you were never even introduced to
• 2:09:48
Speaker 5: a lobster. Alice began to say I once tasted, but
• 2:09:56
Speaker 5: checked herself hastily and said, no, oh, never, So you
• 2:10:04
Speaker 5: can have no idea what a delightful thing a lobster
• 2:10:09
Speaker 5: quadrille is. No, indeed, said Alice, what sort of a
• 2:10:16
Speaker 5: dance is it? Why, said the griffin. You first form
• 2:10:22
Speaker 5: into a line along the seashore, two lines, cried the
• 2:10:29
Speaker 5: mock turtle. Seals turtles, salmon, and so on. Then when
• 2:10:37
Speaker 5: you've cleared all the jellyfish out of the way, that
• 2:10:43
Speaker 5: generally takes some time, interrupted the griffin. You advanced twice,
• 2:10:52
Speaker 5: each with a lobster as a partner, cried the griffin.
• 2:10:58
Speaker 5: Of course, the mock turn said, advance twice, set to partners,
• 2:11:06
Speaker 5: change lobsters, and retire in the same order, continued the griffin.
• 2:11:13
Speaker 5: Then you know, the mock turtle went on. You throw
• 2:11:18
Speaker 5: the the lobsters, shouted the griffin, with a bound into
• 2:11:25
Speaker 5: the air. As far out to sea as you can
• 2:11:32
Speaker 5: swim after them, screamed the griffin. Turn a somersault in
• 2:11:39
Speaker 5: the sea, cried the mock turtle, capering wildly about change
• 2:11:49
Speaker 5: lobsters again, yelled the griffin at the top of his voice.
• 2:11:53
Speaker 5: Back to land again. And that's all, the first figure,
• 2:11:58
Speaker 5: said the mock turtle, suddenly dropping his voice, and the
• 2:12:03
Speaker 5: two creatures, who had been jumping about like mad things
• 2:12:09
Speaker 5: all this time, sat down again very sadly and quietly,
• 2:12:16
Speaker 5: and looked at Alice. It must be a very pretty dance,
• 2:12:24
Speaker 5: said Alice, timidly. Would you like to see a little
• 2:12:29
Speaker 5: of it, said the mock turtle, Very much indeed, said Alice.
• 2:12:37
Speaker 5: Come let's try the first figure, said the mock turtle
• 2:12:44
Speaker 5: to the griffin. We can do without lobsters. You know
• 2:12:50
Speaker 5: which shall sing? Oh you sing, said the griffin. I've
• 2:12:59
Speaker 5: forgotten words. So they began solemnly dancing around and round
• 2:13:07
Speaker 5: Alice every now and then, treading on her toes when
• 2:13:12
Speaker 5: they passed too close, and waving their forepaws to mark
• 2:13:19
Speaker 5: the time, while the mock turtle sang this very slowly
• 2:13:26
Speaker 5: and sadly. Will you walk a little faster, said a
• 2:13:34
Speaker 5: whiting to a snail. There's a porpoise close behind us,
• 2:13:40
Speaker 5: and he's treading on my tail. See how eagerly the
• 2:13:46
Speaker 5: lobsters and the turtles all advance. They are waiting on
• 2:13:52
Speaker 5: the shingle. Will you come and join the dance. Will
• 2:13:58
Speaker 5: you won't you will? Will you won't you? Will you
• 2:14:02
Speaker 5: join the dance? Will you won't you? Will you won't
• 2:14:08
Speaker 5: you won't you join the dance? You can really have
• 2:14:13
Speaker 5: no notion how delightful it will be when they take
• 2:14:19
Speaker 5: us up and throw us with the lobsters out to see.
• 2:14:28
Speaker 5: But the snail replied, too far, too far, and gave
• 2:14:33
Speaker 5: a look. Askance said he thanked the whiting kindly, but
• 2:14:41
Speaker 5: he would not join the dance. Would not, could not,
• 2:14:47
Speaker 5: would not, could not, would not join the dance. Would
• 2:14:53
Speaker 5: not could not, would not, could not, could not join
• 2:14:57
Speaker 5: the dance. What it matters it how far we go?
• 2:15:03
Speaker 5: His scaly friend replied, there is another shore, you know,
• 2:15:09
Speaker 5: upon the other side, the further off from England. The
• 2:15:15
Speaker 5: nearer is to France. Then turn not, pale, beloved snail,
• 2:15:22
Speaker 5: but come and join the dance. Will you won't you?
• 2:15:27
Speaker 5: Will you? Won't you? Will you join the dance? Will
• 2:15:33
Speaker 5: you won't you will you won't you? Won't you join
• 2:15:38
Speaker 5: the dance? Thank you. It's a very interesting dance to watch,
• 2:15:46
Speaker 5: said Alice, feeling very glad that it was over at last.
• 2:15:53
Speaker 5: And I do so like that curious song about the whiting.
• 2:16:00
Speaker 5: Oh as to the whiting, said the mock turtle. They
• 2:16:05
Speaker 5: you've seen them, of course, yes, said Alice. I've often
• 2:16:11
Speaker 5: seen them at Din. She checked herself hastily. I don't
• 2:16:18
Speaker 5: know where Din may be, said the mock turtle. But
• 2:16:24
Speaker 5: if you've seen them so often, of course you know
• 2:16:29
Speaker 5: what they're like. I believe so, Alice replied thoughtfully. They
• 2:16:37
Speaker 5: have their tails in their mouths, and they're all over crumbs.
• 2:16:44
Speaker 5: You're wrong about the crumbs, said the mock turtle. Crumbs
• 2:16:51
Speaker 5: would all wash off in the sea. But they have
• 2:16:57
Speaker 5: their tails in their mouths. And the reason is, hear
• 2:17:03
Speaker 5: the mock turtle yawned and shut his eyes. Tell her
• 2:17:08
Speaker 5: about the reason and all that he said to the griffin.
• 2:17:14
Speaker 5: The reason is, said the griffin, that they would go
• 2:17:20
Speaker 5: with the lobsters to the dance, so they got thrown
• 2:17:25
Speaker 5: out to sea, so they had to fall a long way,
• 2:17:31
Speaker 5: so they got their tails fast in their mouths so
• 2:17:36
Speaker 5: they couldn't get them out again. That's all, thank you,
• 2:17:43
Speaker 5: said Alice. It's very interesting. I never knew so much
• 2:17:50
Speaker 5: about a whiting before. I can tell you more than that,
• 2:17:56
Speaker 5: if you like, said the griffin. Do you know why
• 2:18:01
Speaker 5: it's called a whiting. I never thought about it, said Alice.
• 2:18:08
Speaker 5: Why it does bob boots and shoes, the griffin replied,
• 2:18:17
Speaker 5: very solemnly. Alice was thoroughly puzzled. Does the boots and shoes?
• 2:18:27
Speaker 5: She repeated, in a wondering tone. Why what are your
• 2:18:33
Speaker 5: shoes done with? Said the griffin, I mean, what makes
• 2:18:39
Speaker 5: them so shiny? Alice looked down at them and considered
• 2:18:47
Speaker 5: a little before she gave her answer. They're done with blacking,
• 2:18:55
Speaker 5: I believe boots and shoes under the sea. The griffin
• 2:19:03
Speaker 5: went on, in a deep voice. Are done with whiting.
• 2:19:10
  Speaker 7: Now you know?
• 2:19:14
Speaker 5: And what are they made of? Alice asked, in a
• 2:19:17
Speaker 5: tone of great curiosity. Souls and eels, of course, the
• 2:19:25
Speaker 5: griffin replied, rather impatiently. Any shrimp could have told you that.
• 2:19:36
Speaker 5: If I'd been the whiting, said Alice, whose thoughts were
• 2:19:40
Speaker 5: still running on the song, I'd have said to the porpoise,
• 2:19:47
Speaker 5: keep back, please, we don't want you with us. They
• 2:19:53
Speaker 5: were obliged to have him with them. The mock turtle said, no, oh, wise,
• 2:20:01
Speaker 5: fish would go anywhere without a porpoise, wouldn't it, really,
• 2:20:08
Speaker 5: said Alice, in a tone of great surprise of course not,
• 2:20:15
Speaker 5: said the mock turtle. Why if a fish came to
• 2:20:20
Speaker 5: me and told me he was going on a journey,
• 2:20:26
Speaker 5: I would say, with what porpoise? Don't you mean purpose,
• 2:20:34
Speaker 5: said Alice, I mean what I say, the mock turtle
• 2:20:40
Speaker 5: replied in an offended tone, and the griffin added, come,
• 2:20:48
Speaker 5: let's hear some of your adventures. I could tell you
• 2:20:54
Speaker 5: my adventures beginning from this morning, said Alice, a little
• 2:20:59
Speaker 5: tim but it's no use going back to yesterday because
• 2:21:08
Speaker 5: I was a different person. Then explain all that, said
• 2:21:16
Speaker 5: the mock turtle. No, no, the adventures first, said the
• 2:21:23
Speaker 5: griffin in an impatient tone. Explanations take such a dreadful time.
• 2:21:33
Speaker 5: So Alice began telling them her adventures from the time
• 2:21:38
Speaker 5: when she first saw the white rabbit. She was a
• 2:21:43
Speaker 5: little nervous about it, just at first. The two creatures
• 2:21:48
Speaker 5: got so close to her, one on each side, and
• 2:21:54
Speaker 5: opened their eyes and mouths so very wide, But she
• 2:22:00
Speaker 5: gained courage as she went on. Her listeners were perfectly
• 2:22:06
Speaker 5: quiet till she got to the part about her repeating
• 2:22:12
Speaker 5: you are old father William to the caterpillar, and the
• 2:22:17
Speaker 5: words all coming different, and then the mock turtle drew
• 2:22:23
Speaker 5: a long breath and said, that's very curious. It's all
• 2:22:30
Speaker 5: about as curious as it can be, said the griffins.
• 2:22:37
Speaker 5: It all came different, the mock turtle repeated thoughtfully, I
• 2:22:45
Speaker 5: should like to hear her try and repeat something. Now,
• 2:22:51
Speaker 5: tell her to begin. He looked at the griffin as
• 2:22:56
Speaker 5: if he thought it had some kind of beforety over. Alice,
• 2:23:03
Speaker 5: stand up and repeat, tis the voice of the sluggard,
• 2:23:10
Speaker 5: said the griffin. How the creatures order one about and
• 2:23:17
Speaker 5: make one repeat lessons? Thought Alice. I might as well
• 2:23:22
Speaker 5: be at school at once. However, she got up and
• 2:23:28
Speaker 5: began to repeat it, but her head was so full
• 2:23:33
Speaker 5: of the lobster quadrille that she hardly knew what she
• 2:23:37
Speaker 5: was saying, and that words came very queer. Indeed, tis
• 2:23:45
Speaker 5: the voice of the lobster. I heard him declare you
• 2:23:50
Speaker 5: have baked me too? Brown, I must sugar my hair
• 2:23:56
Speaker 5: as a duck with its eyelids. So he with his nose,
• 2:24:01
Speaker 5: trims his belt and his buttons, and turns out his
• 2:24:06
Speaker 5: toes when the sands are all dry. He is gay
• 2:24:12
Speaker 5: as a lark, and will talk in contemptuous tones of
• 2:24:17
Speaker 5: the shark. But when the tide rises and sharks are around.
• 2:24:24
Speaker 5: His voice has a timid and tremulous sound. That's different
• 2:24:32
Speaker 5: from what I used to say when I was a child,
• 2:24:36
Speaker 5: said the griffin. Well I never heard it before, said
• 2:24:42
Speaker 5: the mock turtle. But it sounds uncommon nonsense. Alice said nothing.
• 2:24:50
Speaker 5: She had sat down with her face in her hands,
• 2:24:54
Speaker 5: wondering if anything would ever happen in a natural way again.
• 2:25:01
Speaker 5: I should like to have it explained, said the mock turtle.
• 2:25:07
Speaker 5: She can't explain it, said the griffin hastily. Go on
• 2:25:13
Speaker 5: with the next verse. But about his toes, the mock
• 2:25:19
Speaker 5: turtle persisted. How could he turn them out with his nose?
• 2:25:26
Speaker 5: You know, it's the first position in dancing, Alice said,
• 2:25:33
Speaker 5: but was dreadfully puzzled by the whole thing and longed
• 2:25:38
Speaker 5: to change the subject. Go on with the next verse,
• 2:25:43
Speaker 5: the griffin repeated, impatiently. It begins, I passed by his garden.
• 2:25:52
Speaker 5: Alice did not dare to disobey, though she felt sure
• 2:25:59
Speaker 5: it would all come wrong, and she went on in
• 2:26:03
Speaker 5: a trembling voice. I passed by his garden and marked
• 2:26:10
Speaker 5: with one eye how the owl and the panther were
• 2:26:16
Speaker 5: sharing pie. The panther took pie crust and gravy and meat,
• 2:26:25
Speaker 5: while the owl had the dish as its share of
• 2:26:29
Speaker 5: the treat. When the pie was all finished, the owl,
• 2:26:34
Speaker 5: as a boon, was kindly permitted to pocket the spoon,
• 2:26:41
Speaker 5: while the panther received knife and fork with a growl
• 2:26:47
Speaker 5: and concluded the banquet. What is the use of repeating
• 2:26:54
Speaker 5: all that stuff, the mock turtle interrupted, If you don't
• 2:27:00
Speaker 5: explain it as you go on, it's by far the
• 2:27:05
Speaker 5: most confusing thing I ever heard. Yes, I think you'd
• 2:27:12
Speaker 5: better leave off, said the griffin, and Alice was only
• 2:27:17
Speaker 5: too glad to do so. Shall we try another figure
• 2:27:23
Speaker 5: of the lobster quadrille? The griffin went on, Or would
• 2:27:29
Speaker 5: you like the mock turtle to sing you a song?
• 2:27:33
  Speaker 4: Oh?
• 2:27:34
Speaker 5: A song? Please? If the mock turtle would be so kind,
• 2:27:40
Speaker 5: Alice replied so eagerly that the Griffin said, in a
• 2:27:46
Speaker 5: rather offended tone, HM, no accounting for tastes, sing her
• 2:27:54
Speaker 5: turtle soup, will you, old fellow. The mock turtle sighed
• 2:28:01
Speaker 5: deeply and began, in a voice sometimes choked with sobs,
• 2:28:09
Speaker 5: to sing this beautiful soup, so rich and green, waiting
• 2:28:20
Speaker 5: in a hot turine. Who for such dainties? Would not
• 2:28:27
Speaker 5: stoop soup of the evening, beautiful soup, Soup of the evening,
• 2:28:38
  Speaker 5: Beautiful soup.
• 2:28:41
Speaker 9: Beautautiful soup, beautautiful soup, Soup.
• 2:28:54
Speaker 12: Of the evening, beautiful beautiful soup, beautiful soup.
• 2:29:07
Speaker 5: Who cares for fish, game or any other dish, Who
• 2:29:16
Speaker 5: would not give all else for two pennyworth only of
• 2:29:22
Speaker 5: beautiful soup, penniworth only of beautiful soup, beautiful soup, beautiful soup,
• 2:29:38
Speaker 5: Soup of the ening, beautiful beautiful soup. Chorus again cried
• 2:29:51
Speaker 5: the griffin, and the mock turtle had just begun to
• 2:29:56
Speaker 5: repeat it when a cry of the the trials beginning
• 2:30:02
Speaker 5: was heard in the distance. Come on, cried the griffin,
• 2:30:07
Speaker 5: and taking Alice by the hand, it hurried off without
• 2:30:13
Speaker 5: waiting for the end of the song. What trial is it?
• 2:30:20
Speaker 5: Alice panted as she ran, but the griffin only answered,
• 2:30:26
Speaker 5: come on, and ran the faster, while more and more
• 2:30:32
Speaker 5: faintly came carried on the breeze that followed them the
• 2:30:38
  Speaker 5: melancholy words soon.
• 2:30:42
Speaker 12: Of the evening beautiful Beautiful Soup.
• 2:30:54
Speaker 5: End of chapter ten.
• 2:30:57
Speaker 7: Chapter eleven, the King and Queen of Hearts were seated
• 2:31:00
Speaker 7: on their throne. When they arrived, with a great crowd
• 2:31:03
Speaker 7: assembled about them, all sorts of little birds and beasts,
• 2:31:06
Speaker 7: as well as a whole pack of cards. The Knave
• 2:31:09
Speaker 7: was standing before them in chains, with a soldier on
• 2:31:12
Speaker 7: each side to guard him, and near the king was
• 2:31:15
Speaker 7: the white Rabbit, with a trumpet in one hand and
• 2:31:17
Speaker 7: a scroll of parchment in the other. In the very
• 2:31:20
Speaker 7: middle of the court was a table with a large
• 2:31:23
Speaker 7: dish of tarts upon it. They looked so good that
• 2:31:25
Speaker 7: it made Alice quite hungry to look at them. I
• 2:31:28
Speaker 7: wish they'd get the trial done, she thought, and hand
• 2:31:31
Speaker 7: round the refreshments. But there seemed to be no chance
• 2:31:34
Speaker 7: of this, so she began looking at everything about her
• 2:31:37
Speaker 7: to pass away the time. Alice had never been in
• 2:31:41
Speaker 7: a court of justice before, but she had read about
• 2:31:43
Speaker 7: them in books, and she was quite pleased to find
• 2:31:46
Speaker 7: that she knew the name of nearly everything.
• 2:31:48
  Speaker 4: There.
• 2:31:49
Speaker 7: That's the judge, she said to herself, because of his
• 2:31:51
Speaker 7: great wig. The judge, by the way, was the king.
• 2:31:55
Speaker 7: And as he wore his crown over the wig, he
• 2:31:58
Speaker 7: did not look at all comfortable, and it was certainly
• 2:32:00
Speaker 7: not becoming. And that's the jury box, thought Alice, and
• 2:32:04
Speaker 7: those twelve creatures. She was obliged to say creatures, you see,
• 2:32:08
Speaker 7: because some of them were animals and some were birds.
• 2:32:11
Speaker 7: I suppose they are the jurors. She said this last
• 2:32:14
Speaker 7: word two or three times over to herself, being rather
• 2:32:16
Speaker 7: proud of it, for she thought, and rightly too, that
• 2:32:19
Speaker 7: very few little girls of her age knew the meaning
• 2:32:22
Speaker 7: of it at all. However, jurymen would have done just
• 2:32:25
Speaker 7: as well. The twelve jurors were all writing very busily
• 2:32:30
Speaker 7: on slates. What are they doing, Alice whispered to the griffin.
• 2:32:34
Speaker 7: They can't have anything to put down yet before the
• 2:32:37
Speaker 7: trial's begun. They're putting down their names. The griffin whispered
• 2:32:41
Speaker 7: in reply, for fear that they should forget them before
• 2:32:44
Speaker 7: the end of the trial. Stupid things, Alice began in
• 2:32:49
Speaker 7: a loud, indignant voice. But she stopped hastily, for the
• 2:32:51
Speaker 7: white rabbit cried out silence in the court, and the
• 2:32:54
Speaker 7: king put on his spectacles and looked anxiously round to
• 2:32:57
Speaker 7: make out who was talking. Alice could see, as well
• 2:33:01
Speaker 7: as if she were looking over their shoulders, that all
• 2:33:03
Speaker 7: the jurors were writing down stupid things on their slates,
• 2:33:07
Speaker 7: and she could even make out that one of them
• 2:33:09
Speaker 7: didn't know how to spell stupid, and that he had
• 2:33:11
Speaker 7: to ask his neighbor to tell him a nice muddle.
• 2:33:14
Speaker 7: Their slates'll be in before the trial's over, thought Alice,
• 2:33:19
Speaker 7: one of the jurors, had a pencil that squeaked. This,
• 2:33:22
Speaker 7: of course Alice could not stand, and she went round
• 2:33:25
Speaker 7: the court and got behind him, and very soon found
• 2:33:27
Speaker 7: an opportunity of taking it away. She did it so
• 2:33:30
Speaker 7: quickly that the poor little juror, it was Bill the Lizard,
• 2:33:33
Speaker 7: could not make out at all what had become of it. So,
• 2:33:36
Speaker 7: after hunting all about for it, he was obliged to
• 2:33:39
Speaker 7: write with one finger for the rest of the day.
• 2:33:41
Speaker 7: And this was of very little use, as it left
• 2:33:43
Speaker 7: no mark on the slate. How old read the accusation,
• 2:33:48
Speaker 7: said the king. On this, the white rabbit blew three
• 2:33:51
Speaker 7: blasts on the trumpet, and then enrolled the parchment scroll
• 2:33:54
Speaker 7: and read as follows. The Queen of Hearts she made
• 2:33:58
Speaker 7: some tarts all on a summer. The Knave of Hearts,
• 2:34:01
Speaker 7: he stole those tarts and took them quite away. Consider
• 2:34:06
Speaker 7: your verdict, the king said to the jury. Not yet,
• 2:34:09
Speaker 7: not yet, the rabbit hastily interrupted, that's a great deal
• 2:34:12
Speaker 7: to come before that call the first witness, said the King,
• 2:34:16
Speaker 7: and the white Rabbit blew three blasts on the trumpet
• 2:34:19
Speaker 7: and called out best witness. The first witness was the hatter.
• 2:34:24
Speaker 7: He came in with a tea cup in one hand
• 2:34:26
Speaker 7: and a piece of bread and butter in the other.
• 2:34:29
Speaker 7: I beg pardon your majesty, he began for bringing these in.
• 2:34:33
Speaker 7: But I hadn't quite finished my tea when I was
• 2:34:35
Speaker 7: sent for. You ought to have finished, said the king.
• 2:34:39
Speaker 7: When did you begin? The hatter looked at the march Hare,
• 2:34:42
Speaker 7: who had followed him into the court arm in arm
• 2:34:44
Speaker 7: with a dormouse. Fourteenth of March, I think it was,
• 2:34:48
Speaker 7: he said, Fifteenth, said the march Hare. Sixteenth, added the dormouse.
• 2:34:53
Speaker 7: Write that down, the King said to the jury, and
• 2:34:55
Speaker 7: the jury eagerly wrote down all three dates on their slates,
• 2:34:59
Speaker 7: and then added them up and reduced the answer to
• 2:35:01
Speaker 7: shillings and pence. Take off your hat, the king said
• 2:35:04
Speaker 7: to the hatter, It isn't mine, said the hatter. Still in,
• 2:35:08
Speaker 7: the king exclaimed, turning to the jury, who instantly made
• 2:35:11
Speaker 7: a memorandum of the fact, I keep them to sell.
• 2:35:14
Speaker 7: The hatter added, as an explanation, I've none of my own.
• 2:35:17
Speaker 7: I am a hatter here. The Queen put on her
• 2:35:20
Speaker 7: spectacles and began staring at the hatter, who turned pale
• 2:35:23
Speaker 7: and fidgeted. Give your evidence, said the king, and don't
• 2:35:27
Speaker 7: be nervous, or I'll have you executed on the spot.
• 2:35:31
Speaker 7: This did not seem to encourage the witness at all.
• 2:35:34
Speaker 7: He kept shifting from one foot to the other, looking
• 2:35:36
Speaker 7: uneasily at the Queen, and in his confusion, he bit
• 2:35:39
Speaker 7: a large piece out of his teacup instead of the
• 2:35:42
Speaker 7: bread and butter. Just at this moment, Alice felt a
• 2:35:46
Speaker 7: very curious sensation, which puzzled her a good deal until
• 2:35:50
Speaker 7: she made out what it was. She was beginning to
• 2:35:52
Speaker 7: grow larger again, and she thought at first she would
• 2:35:55
Speaker 7: get up and leave the court, but on second thoughts,
• 2:35:58
Speaker 7: she decided to remain where she was as long as
• 2:36:00
Speaker 7: there was room for her. I wish you wouldn't squeeze,
• 2:36:03
Speaker 7: so said the dormouse, who was sitting next to her.
• 2:36:06
Speaker 7: I can hardly breathe. I can't help it, said Alice,
• 2:36:10
Speaker 7: very meekly. I'm growing. You've no right to grow, here,
• 2:36:13
Speaker 7: said the dormouse. Don't talk nonsense, said Alice more boldly.
• 2:36:17
Speaker 7: You know you're growing too, Yes, but I grow at
• 2:36:21
Speaker 7: a reasonable pace, said the dormouse, not in that ridiculous fashion,
• 2:36:25
Speaker 7: And he got up, very sulkily and crossed over to
• 2:36:27
Speaker 7: the other side of the court. All this time the
• 2:36:31
Speaker 7: Queen had never left off staring at the hatter, and
• 2:36:34
Speaker 7: just as the dormouse crossed the court, she said to
• 2:36:37
Speaker 7: one of the officers of the court, bring me the
• 2:36:39
Speaker 7: list to the singers in the last concert, on which
• 2:36:42
Speaker 7: the wretched hatter trembled so that he shook both his
• 2:36:44
Speaker 7: shoes off. Give your evidence, the king repeated, angrily, or
• 2:36:49
Speaker 7: I'll have you executed, whether you're nervous or not. I'm
• 2:36:53
Speaker 7: a poor man, your majesty, the hatter began, in a
• 2:36:56
Speaker 7: trembling voice. And I hadn't begun my tea, not above
• 2:36:59
Speaker 7: a week or so, And what with the bread and
• 2:37:02
Speaker 7: butter getting so thin, and the twinkling of the tea,
• 2:37:06
Speaker 7: the twinkling of the watt, said the king. It begun
• 2:37:09
Speaker 7: with the tea. The hatter replied, Of course, twinkling begins
• 2:37:12
Speaker 7: with the tea, said the King. Sharply, do take me
• 2:37:15
Speaker 7: for a dunce. Go on, I'm a poor man. The
• 2:37:19
Speaker 7: hatter went on, and most things twinkled. After that, only
• 2:37:22
Speaker 7: the march hare said I didn't. The march hare interrupted,
• 2:37:26
Speaker 7: in a great hurry. You did, said the hatter. I
• 2:37:28
Speaker 7: deny it, said the march hare. He denies it, said
• 2:37:32
Speaker 7: the king. Leave out that part well, at any rate,
• 2:37:35
Speaker 7: the dormouse said. The hatter went on looking anxiously round
• 2:37:38
Speaker 7: to see if he would deny it too, but the
• 2:37:41
Speaker 7: dormouse denied nothing, being fast asleep. After that, continued the hatter.
• 2:37:46
Speaker 7: I cut some more bread and butter. But what did
• 2:37:49
Speaker 7: the dormouse say. One of the jury asked that I
• 2:37:52
Speaker 7: can't remember, said the hatter. You must remember, remarked the king,
• 2:37:56
Speaker 7: or I'll have you executed. The miserable hatter dropped his
• 2:38:00
Speaker 7: teacup and bread and butter and went down on one knee.
• 2:38:03
  Speaker 7: I'm a poor man, your majesty, he began. You're a
• 2:38:06
Speaker 7: very poor speaker, said the king. Here one of the
• 2:38:09
Speaker 7: guinea pigs cheered and was immediately suppressed by the officers
• 2:38:13
Speaker 7: of the court. As that is rather a hard word,
• 2:38:16
Speaker 7: I will just explain to you how it was done.
• 2:38:18
Speaker 7: They had a large canvas bag which tied up at
• 2:38:20
Speaker 7: the mouth with strings. Into this they slipped the guinea
• 2:38:22
Speaker 7: pig headfirst, and then sat upon it. I'm glad I've
• 2:38:26
Speaker 7: seen that done, thought Alice. I've so often read in
• 2:38:29
Speaker 7: the newspapers at the end of trials there with some
• 2:38:32
Speaker 7: attempts at applause, which was immediately suppressed by the officers
• 2:38:35
Speaker 7: of the court. And I never understood what it meant
• 2:38:37
Speaker 7: till now. If that's all you know about it, you
• 2:38:41
Speaker 7: may stand down, continued the king. I can't go, no loa,
• 2:38:44
Speaker 7: said the hatter. I'm on the floor as it is.
• 2:38:47
Speaker 7: Then you may sit down, the king replied. Hear the
• 2:38:50
Speaker 7: other guinea pig cheered and was suppressed. Come that finished,
• 2:38:54
Speaker 7: the guinea pigs, thought, Alice, Now we shall get on better.
• 2:38:58
Speaker 7: I'd rather finish my tea, said the hatter, with an
• 2:39:00
Speaker 7: anxious look at the Queen, who was reading the list
• 2:39:02
Speaker 7: of singers. You may go, said the king, and the
• 2:39:05
Speaker 7: hatter hurriedly left the court, without even waiting to put
• 2:39:07
Speaker 7: his shoes on, and just take his head off outside,
• 2:39:11
Speaker 7: the queen added to one of the officers, but the
• 2:39:13
Speaker 7: hatter was out of sight before the officer could get
• 2:39:16
Speaker 7: to the door. Call the next witness, said the king.
• 2:39:20
Speaker 7: The next witness was the Duchess's cook. She carried the
• 2:39:23
Speaker 7: pipper box in her hand, and Alice guessed who it
• 2:39:26
Speaker 7: was even before she got into the court. By the way,
• 2:39:28
Speaker 7: the people knew, the door began sneezing. All at once,
• 2:39:32
Speaker 7: Give your evidence, said the king. Saunt, said the cook.
• 2:39:37
Speaker 7: The King looked anxiously at the white rabbit, who said,
• 2:39:39
Speaker 7: in a low voice, your Majesty must cross examine this witness. Well,
• 2:39:45
Speaker 7: if I must, I must, the King said with a
• 2:39:47
Speaker 7: melancholy air, And after folding his arms and frowning at
• 2:39:51
Speaker 7: the cook till his eyes were nearly out of sight,
• 2:39:53
Speaker 7: he said, in a deep voice, what those hearts made
• 2:39:56
Speaker 7: of Papa? Mostly said the cook. Threakle, said a sleepy
• 2:40:01
Speaker 7: voice behind her, Call that dormouse. The Queen shrieked out,
• 2:40:05
Speaker 7: behead that dormouse. Turn that dormouse out of courts, suppress him,
• 2:40:10
Speaker 7: pinch him off with his whiskers. For some minutes the
• 2:40:15
Speaker 7: whole court was in confusion getting the dormouse turned out,
• 2:40:18
Speaker 7: and by the time they had settled down again, the
• 2:40:20
Speaker 7: cook had disappeared. Never Mind, said the King, with an
• 2:40:23
Speaker 7: air of great relief. Call the next witness, and he added,
• 2:40:27
Speaker 7: in an undertone, to the queen. Really, my dear, you
• 2:40:30
Speaker 7: must cross examine the next witness. It quite mixed my foreheadache.
• 2:40:35
Speaker 7: Alice watched the white rabbit as he fumbled over the list,
• 2:40:38
Speaker 7: feeling very curious to see what the next witness would
• 2:40:40
Speaker 7: be like, for they haven't gotten much evidence yet, she
• 2:40:43
Speaker 7: said to herself, imagine her surprise when the white rabbit
• 2:40:47
Speaker 7: read out, at the top of his shrill little voice,
• 2:40:49
Speaker 7: the name Alice. End of chapter eleven.
• 2:40:54
Speaker 13: Alice's evidence here, cried Alice, quite forgetting in the flood
• 2:41:00
Speaker 13: of the moment how large she had grown in the
• 2:41:02
Speaker 13: last few minutes, and she jumped up in such a
• 2:41:05
Speaker 13: hurry that she tipped over the jury box with the
• 2:41:08
Speaker 13: edge of her skirt, upsetting all the jurymen on to
• 2:41:10
Speaker 13: the heads of the crowd below, and there they lay
• 2:41:13
Speaker 13: sprawling about, reminding her very much of a globe of
• 2:41:17
Speaker 13: goldfish she had accidentally upset the week before. Oh, I
• 2:41:20
Speaker 13: beg your pardon, she exclaimed, in a tone of great dismay,
• 2:41:24
Speaker 13: and began picking them up again as quickly as she could,
• 2:41:27
Speaker 13: for the accident of the goldfish kept running in her head,
• 2:41:30
Speaker 13: and she had a vague sort of idea that they
• 2:41:32
Speaker 13: must be collected at once and put back into the
• 2:41:34
Speaker 13: jury box, or they would die. The trial cannot proceed,
• 2:41:39
Speaker 13: said the King in a very grave voice, until all
• 2:41:42
Speaker 13: of the jurymen are back in their proper places, all,
• 2:41:46
Speaker 13: he repeated, with great emphasis, looking hard at Alice as
• 2:41:50
Speaker 13: he said so. Alice looked at the jury box and
• 2:41:55
Speaker 13: saw that in her haste she had put the lizard
• 2:41:57
Speaker 13: in head downwards, and the poor little thing was waving
• 2:42:00
Speaker 13: its tail about in a melancholy way, being quite unable
• 2:42:03
Speaker 13: to move. She soon got it out again and put
• 2:42:07
Speaker 13: it right. Not that it signifies much, she said to herself,
• 2:42:11
Speaker 13: I should think it be quite as much use in
• 2:42:13
Speaker 13: the trial one way up as the other. As soon
• 2:42:16
Speaker 13: as the jury had a little recovered from the shock
• 2:42:19
Speaker 13: of being upset, and their slates and pencils had been
• 2:42:22
Speaker 13: found and handed back to them, they set to work
• 2:42:25
Speaker 13: very diligently to write out a history of the accident,
• 2:42:28
Speaker 13: all except the lizard, who seemed too much overcome to
• 2:42:31
Speaker 13: do anything but sit with its mouth open, gazing up
• 2:42:34
Speaker 13: into the roof of the court. What do you know
• 2:42:37
Speaker 13: about this business, the King said to Alice. Nothing said Alice,
• 2:42:43
Speaker 13: nothing whatever, persisted the King, nothing whatever, said Alice, that's
• 2:42:50
Speaker 13: very important, the king said, turning to the jury. They
• 2:42:53
Speaker 13: were just beginning to write this down on their slates
• 2:42:55
Speaker 13: when the White Rabbit interrupted, unimportant, Your majesty means, of course,
• 2:43:00
Speaker 13: he said, in a very respectful tone, but frowning and
• 2:43:03
Speaker 13: making faces at him as he spoke. Unimportant, of course,
• 2:43:08
Speaker 13: I meant, the king hastily said, and went on to
• 2:43:11
Speaker 13: himself in an undertone important, unimportant, unimportant, important, as if
• 2:43:16
Speaker 13: he was trying which word sounded best. Some of the
• 2:43:20
Speaker 13: jury wrote it down important and some unimportant. Alice could
• 2:43:25
Speaker 13: see this, as she was near enough to look over
• 2:43:27
Speaker 13: their slates. But it doesn't matter a bit, she thought
• 2:43:31
Speaker 13: to herself. At this moment, the King, who had been
• 2:43:35
Speaker 13: for some time busily writing in his note book, cackled
• 2:43:37
Speaker 13: out silence and read out from his book rule forty two,
• 2:43:42
Speaker 13: all persons more than a mile high to leave the court.
• 2:43:47
Speaker 13: Everybody looked at Alice. I'm not a mile high, said Alice.
• 2:43:51
Speaker 13: You are, said the king, nearly two miles high, added
• 2:43:54
Speaker 13: the Queen. Well, I shan't go at any rate, said Alice. Beside,
• 2:43:58
Speaker 13: that's not a regular rule. You invented it just now.
• 2:44:02
Speaker 13: It's the oldest rule in the book, said the King.
• 2:44:06
Speaker 13: Then it ought to be number one, said Alice. The
• 2:44:09
Speaker 13: King turned pale and shut his notebook. Hastily consider your verdict,
• 2:44:14
Speaker 13: he said to the jury in a low trembling voice.
• 2:44:17
Speaker 13: There's more evidence to come yet, please, your majesty, said
• 2:44:20
Speaker 13: the White Rabbit, jumping up in a great hurry. This
• 2:44:23
Speaker 13: paper has just been picked up. What's in it, said
• 2:44:26
Speaker 13: the Queen. I haven't opened it yet, said the White rabbit.
• 2:44:30
Speaker 13: But it seems to be a letter written by the
• 2:44:33
Speaker 13: prisoner to to somebody. It must have been, that, said
• 2:44:37
Speaker 13: the King, unless it was written to nobody, which isn't usual.
• 2:44:40
Speaker 13: You know who is it directed to, said one of
• 2:44:44
Speaker 13: the jurymen. It isn't directed at all, said the white letter.
• 2:44:48
Speaker 13: In fact, there's nothing written on the outside. He unfolded
• 2:44:53
Speaker 13: the paper as he spoke, and added, it isn't a letter,
• 2:44:55
Speaker 13: after all. It's a set of verses. Are they in
• 2:45:00
Speaker 13: the prisoner's handwriting, asked another of the jurymen. No, they're not,
• 2:45:06
Speaker 13: said the white rabbit. And that's the queerest thing about it.
• 2:45:10
Speaker 13: The jury all looked puzzled. He must have imitated somebody
• 2:45:14
Speaker 13: else's hand, said the King. The jury all brightened up again, Please,
• 2:45:18
Speaker 13: your majesty, said the knave. I didn't write it, and
• 2:45:20
Speaker 13: they can't prove I did. There's no name signed at
• 2:45:23
Speaker 13: the end. If you didn't sign it, said the king.
• 2:45:27
Speaker 13: That only makes the matter worse. You must have meant
• 2:45:30
Speaker 13: some mischief, or else you'd have signed your name like
• 2:45:33
Speaker 13: an honest man. There was a general clapping of hands
• 2:45:36
Speaker 13: at this. It was the first really clever thing the
• 2:45:39
Speaker 13: King had said that day. That proves his guilt, said
• 2:45:43
Speaker 13: the Queen. It proves nothing of the sort, said Alice.
• 2:45:46
Speaker 13: Why you don't even know what they're about? Read them,
• 2:45:51
Speaker 13: said the king. The white rabbit put on his spectacles.
• 2:45:55
Speaker 13: Where shall I begin, Please, your majesty, he asked, Begin
• 2:46:00
Speaker 13: the beginning, the King said, gravely, and go on till
• 2:46:03
Speaker 13: you come to the end. Then stop. These were the
• 2:46:07
Speaker 13: verses the white Rabbit read. They told me you had
• 2:46:11
Speaker 13: been to her and mentioned me to him. She gave
• 2:46:14
Speaker 13: me a good character, but said I could not swim.
• 2:46:18
Speaker 13: He sent them word I had not gone. We know
• 2:46:21
Speaker 13: it to be true. If she would push the matter on,
• 2:46:24
Speaker 13: what would become of you? I gave her one, They
• 2:46:27
Speaker 13: gave him two, You gave us three or more. They
• 2:46:31
Speaker 13: all returned from him to you, though they were mine before.
• 2:46:36
Speaker 3: If I or she.
• 2:46:37
Speaker 13: Should chance to be involved in this affair, he trusts
• 2:46:41
Speaker 13: to you to set them three exactly as we were.
• 2:46:47
Speaker 13: My notion was that you had been before. She had
• 2:46:49
Speaker 13: this fit, an obstacle that came between him and ourselves,
• 2:46:54
Speaker 13: and it don't let him know she liked them best,
• 2:46:59
Speaker 13: for this must be a secret kept from all the rest,
• 2:47:03
Speaker 13: between yourself and me. That's the most important piece of
• 2:47:08
Speaker 13: evidence we've heard yet, said the King, rubbing his hands.
• 2:47:11
Speaker 13: And now let the jury, if any one of them
• 2:47:13
Speaker 13: can explain it, said Alice. She had grown so large
• 2:47:17
Speaker 13: in the last few minutes that she wasn't a bit
• 2:47:19
Speaker 13: afraid of interrupting him. I'll give him sixpence. I don't
• 2:47:22
Speaker 13: believe there's an atom of meaning in it. The jury
• 2:47:26
Speaker 13: all wrote this down on their slates. She doesn't believe
• 2:47:29
Speaker 13: there's an atom of meaning in it. But none of
• 2:47:31
Speaker 13: them attempted to explain the paper. If there's no meaning
• 2:47:35
Speaker 13: in it, said the King. That saves a world of trouble,
• 2:47:38
Speaker 13: you know, as we needn't try to find any And
• 2:47:41
Speaker 13: yet I don't know. He went on spreading out the
• 2:47:44
Speaker 13: verses on his knee, and looking at them all with
• 2:47:46
Speaker 13: one eye. I seem to see some meaning in them,
• 2:47:49
Speaker 13: after all, said I could not swim. You can't swim,
• 2:47:54
Speaker 13: can you, he added, turning to the knave. The knave
• 2:47:57
Speaker 13: shook his head sadly. Do I look like it, he said,
• 2:48:00
Speaker 13: which he certainly did not, being made entirely of cardboard.
• 2:48:05
Speaker 13: All right, so far, said the king, and he went
• 2:48:07
Speaker 13: on muttering over the verses to himself. We know it
• 2:48:10
Speaker 13: to be true. That's the jury. Of course, I gave
• 2:48:14
Speaker 13: her one, They gave him two. Why that must be
• 2:48:18
Speaker 13: what he did with the tarts, you know. But it
• 2:48:21
Speaker 13: goes on. They all returned from him to you, said Alice.
• 2:48:25
Speaker 13: Why there they are, said the King, triumphantly, pointing to
• 2:48:28
Speaker 13: the tarts on the table. Nothing can be clearer than that.
• 2:48:32
Speaker 13: Then again, before she had this fit, you never had fits,
• 2:48:36
Speaker 13: my dear, I think, he said to the queen. Never,
• 2:48:40
Speaker 13: said the queen, furiously, throwing an inkstand at the lizard
• 2:48:43
Speaker 13: as she spoke. The unfortunate little bill had left off
• 2:48:47
Speaker 13: writing on his slate with one finger, as he found
• 2:48:49
Speaker 13: it made no mark, But he now hastily began again
• 2:48:52
Speaker 13: using the ink that was trickling down his face as
• 2:48:55
Speaker 13: long as it lasted. Then the words don't fit you,
• 2:48:59
Speaker 13: said King, looking round the court with a smile. There
• 2:49:03
Speaker 13: was a dead silence. It's upon, the King added in
• 2:49:07
Speaker 13: an offended tone, and everybody laughed. Let the jury consider
• 2:49:11
Speaker 13: their verdict, the King said, for about the twentieth time
• 2:49:14
Speaker 13: that day. No, No, said the queen. Sentence first, verdict afterwards,
• 2:49:20
Speaker 13: stuff and nonsense, said Alice loudly. The idea of having
• 2:49:24
Speaker 13: the sentence first, hold your tongue, said the queen, turning purple.
• 2:49:30
Speaker 13: I won't, said Alice. Off with her head, the queen
• 2:49:35
Speaker 13: shouted at the top of her voice. Nobody moved. Who
• 2:49:39
Speaker 13: cares for you, said Alice. She had grown to her
• 2:49:42
Speaker 13: full size by this time. You're nothing but a pack
• 2:49:44
Speaker 13: of cards. At this the whole pack rose up into
• 2:49:48
Speaker 13: the air and came flying down upon her. She gave
• 2:49:51
Speaker 13: a little scream, half of fright and half of anger,
• 2:49:54
Speaker 13: and tried to beat them off, and found herself lying
• 2:49:56
Speaker 13: on the bank with her head in the lap of
• 2:49:58
Speaker 13: her sister, who gently brushing away some dead leaves that
• 2:50:02
Speaker 13: had fluttered down from the tree upon her face. Wake up, Alice, dear,
• 2:50:07
Speaker 13: said her sister. Why what a long sleep you've had. Oh,
• 2:50:11
Speaker 13: I've had such a curious dream, said Alice, And she
• 2:50:15
Speaker 13: told her sister as well as she could remember them,
• 2:50:18
Speaker 13: all these strange adventures of hers that you've just been
• 2:50:21
Speaker 13: reading about. And when she had finished, her sister kissed
• 2:50:25
Speaker 13: her and said, it was a curious dream, dear, certainly,
• 2:50:29
Speaker 13: But now run into your tea. It's getting late. So
• 2:50:33
Speaker 13: Alice got up and ran off, thinking while she ran,
• 2:50:36
Speaker 13: as well she might, what a wonderful dream it had been.
• 2:50:41
Speaker 13: But her sister sat still just as she left her,
• 2:50:45
Speaker 13: leaning her head on her hand, watching the setting sun
• 2:50:49
Speaker 13: and thinking of little Alice and all her wonderful adventures,
• 2:50:53
Speaker 13: till she too began dreaming, after a fashion, and this
• 2:50:57
Speaker 13: was her dream. First, she dreamed of little Alice herself,
• 2:51:02
Speaker 13: and once again the tiny hands were clasped upon her knee,
• 2:51:05
Speaker 13: and the bright, eager eyes were looking up into hers,
• 2:51:09
Speaker 13: and she could hear the very tones of her voice,
• 2:51:11
Speaker 13: and see that queer little toss of her head to
• 2:51:14
Speaker 13: keep back the wandering hair that would always get into
• 2:51:16
Speaker 13: her eyes. And still as she listened, or seemed to listen,
• 2:51:21
Speaker 13: the whole place around her became alive, the strange creatures
• 2:51:25
Speaker 13: of her little sister's dream. The long grass rustled at
• 2:51:29
Speaker 13: her feet as the white rabbit, hurried by the frightened mouse,
• 2:51:33
Speaker 13: splashed his way through the neighboring pool. She could hear
• 2:51:36
Speaker 13: the rattle of the teacups as the march hare and
• 2:51:38
Speaker 13: his friends shared their never ending meal, and the shrill
• 2:51:42
Speaker 13: voice of the Queen ordering off her unfortunate guests to execution.
• 2:51:47
Speaker 13: Once more. The pig baby was sneezing on the Duchess's
• 2:51:50
Speaker 13: knee while plates and dishes crashed around it. Once more,
• 2:51:53
Speaker 13: the shriek of the griffin, the squealing of the lizard's
• 2:51:56
Speaker 13: slate pencil, and the choking of the suppressed guinea pigs
• 2:52:00
Speaker 13: filled the air, mixed up with the distant sobs of
• 2:52:03
Speaker 13: the miserable mock turtle. So she sat on with closed
• 2:52:07
Speaker 13: eyes and half believed herself in wonderland, though she knew
• 2:52:11
Speaker 13: she had but to open them again, and all would
• 2:52:14
Speaker 13: change to dull reality. The grass would be only rustling
• 2:52:18
Speaker 13: in the wind, and the pool ripplings of the waving
• 2:52:20
Speaker 13: of the reeds. The rattling teacups would change to tinkling
• 2:52:24
Speaker 13: sheep bells, and the Queen's shrill cries to the voice
• 2:52:27
Speaker 13: of the shepherd boy, and the sneeze of the baby,
• 2:52:30
Speaker 13: the shriek of the griffin, and all the other queer
• 2:52:33
Speaker 13: noises would change, she knew to the confused clamor of
• 2:52:37
Speaker 13: the busy farm yard, while the lowing of the cattle
• 2:52:40
Speaker 13: in the distance would take the place of the mock
• 2:52:42
Speaker 13: turtle's heavy sobs. Lastly, she pictured to herself how this
• 2:52:48
Speaker 13: same little sister of hers would, in the after time
• 2:52:52
Speaker 13: be herself a grown woman, and how she would keep
• 2:52:56
Speaker 13: through all her riper years, the simple and loving heart
• 2:52:58
Speaker 13: of her childhood. And how she would gather about her
• 2:53:01
Speaker 13: other little children and make their eyes bright and eager
• 2:53:05
Speaker 13: with many a strange tale, perhaps even with the dream
• 2:53:08
Speaker 13: of Wonderland of long ago, And how she would feel
• 2:53:12
Speaker 13: with all their simple sorrows, and find a pleasure in
• 2:53:16
Speaker 13: all their simple joys, remembering her own child life and
• 2:53:21
Speaker 13: the happy summer days. This is the end of Alice's
• 2:53:27
  Speaker 13: adventures in Wonderland.
