- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 26th of
- 0:17June. And so glad that you have tapped
- 0:20on play and said, come on Sean, let us read some more of God's
- 0:24Word. And today is the last day for a
- 0:26couple of weeks that we are going to be reading from
- 0:28Deuteronomy. As we reach the halfway point,
- 0:32we are going to take a bit of a turn and still be in the Old
- 0:35Testament. But instead of reading what
- 0:37Moses had to say about how God's chosen people should be living
- 0:42in the Promised land, we are going to hear some love poetry.
- 0:46Love poetry that's written in the context of a man and a woman
- 0:49who love each other. That representing the love that
- 0:52God has for you, friends and for me, that is coming next week.
- 0:58That's going to be grand. But in the meantime, the last
- 1:01chapter of Deuteronomy that we'll read for a while, we'll
- 1:04round out this section of what we owe God and then move into
- 1:08the area of human authority. And so while the 5th Commandment
- 1:13speaks about honouring your parents, Moses will expand that
- 1:17into how we honour each other. So let us read this fascinating
- 1:22exposition of God's covenant with his people, then reading
- 1:25Deuteronomy chapter 16. In honour of the Lord your God,
- 1:39celebrate the Passover each year in the early spring in the month
- 1:43of Abib, for that was the month in which the Lord your God
- 1:47brought you out of Egypt by night.
- 1:50Your Passover sacrifice may be from either the flock or the
- 1:53herd, and it must be sacrificed to the Lord your God at the
- 1:57designated place of worship, the place He chooses for His name to
- 2:01be honoured. Eat it with bread made without
- 2:04yeast for seven days. The bread you eat must be made
- 2:08without yeast, as when you escape from Egypt in such a
- 2:11hurry. Eat this bread, the bread of
- 2:15suffering, so that as long as you live you'll remember the day
- 2:19you departed from Egypt. Let no yeast be found in any
- 2:23house throughout your land for those seven days.
- 2:27And when you sacrifice the Passover land on the evening of
- 2:30the first day, do not let any of the meat remain until the next
- 2:34morning. You may not sacrifice the
- 2:37Passover in just any of the towns that the Lord your God is
- 2:40giving you. You must offer it only at the
- 2:43designated place of worship, the place the Lord your God chooses
- 2:48for His name to be honoured. Sacrifice it there in the
- 2:51evening as the sun goes down on the anniversary of your exodus
- 2:55from Egypt. Roast the lamb and eat it in the
- 2:58place the Lord your God chooses. Then you may go back to your
- 3:02tents the next morning. For the next 6 days you may not
- 3:07eat any bread made with yeast. On the 7th day, proclaim another
- 3:12holy day in honour of the Lord your God, and no work may be
- 3:16done on that day. Count off 7 weeks from when you
- 3:20first began to cut the grain at the time of harvest.
- 3:24Then celebrate the festival of harvest.
- 3:26To honour the Lord your God. Bring him a voluntary offering
- 3:30in proportion to the blessings you have received from Him.
- 3:34This is a time to celebrate before the Lord your God at the
- 3:37designated place of worship. He will choose for His name to
- 3:41be honoured. Celebrate with your sons and
- 3:44daughters, your male and female servants and the Levites,
- 3:48foreigners, orphans and widows from your towns.
- 3:52For seven days. You must celebrate this festival
- 3:55to honour the Lord your God at the place He chooses, for it is
- 3:59He who blesses you with bountiful harvests and gives you
- 4:04success in all your work. This festival will be a time of
- 4:08great joy for all. Each year every man in Israel
- 4:12must celebrate these three festivals, the Festival of
- 4:15Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Harvest and the Festival of
- 4:19Shelters. On each of these occasions all
- 4:23men must appear before the Lord your God at the place He
- 4:27chooses, but they must not appear before the Lord without a
- 4:30gift for Him. All must give as they are able,
- 4:34according to the blessings given to them by the Lord your God.
- 4:40Appoint judges and officials for yourselves from each of your
- 4:43tribes in all the towns the Lord your God is giving you.
- 4:47They must judge the people fairly.
- 4:50You must never twist justice or show partiality.
- 4:53Never accept a bribe for bribes, blind the eyes of the wise, and
- 4:58corrupt the decisions of the godly.
- 5:01Let true justice prevail, so you may live and occupy the land
- 5:05that the Lord your God is giving you.
- 5:08You must never set up a wooden ash or a pole beside the altar
- 5:12you build for the Lord your God, and never set up sacred pillars
- 5:16for worship for the Lord your God hates them.
- 5:31As we read this chapter, we see a bit of your character, Lord.
- 5:36We see that you want us to remember you and stay close to
- 5:40You. And the way that you remind your
- 5:43people to do that is not with painful lists to memorise or not
- 5:48with sacrifices to make, but it is with celebrations.
- 5:54Our Lord, thank you that you give us lives of plenty and you
- 5:59ask us to celebrate your love and your goodness.
- 6:04Lord, help us to remember to do that.
- 6:06Help us to celebrate all you have given us.
- 6:09Celebrate your kindness to us and your kindness not just in
- 6:14the things that you give us, but in the forgiveness and the love
- 6:18and the acceptance and most of all in that most precious gift
- 6:23that you gave us, which is Jesus.
- 6:26Oh Jesus, we are so grateful for you and the way that you showed
- 6:31us that you and your Father and your Spirit are love and love
- 6:37us. So we come before you and we
- 6:41celebrate you today. Open our hearts to be full of
- 6:46praise and rejoicing today for all that you've done for us.
- 6:50So we praise you, and we sing your mighty name in the name of
- 6:56Jesus. Amen.
