- 0:50- This is Scott Becker with the Beckers HealthCare
- 0:53- podcast.
- 0:54- I'm thrilled today to be joined by a
- 0:56- tremendous leader. We're joined today by Patrice Harris,
- 1:00- doctor Patrice Harris. Doctor Harris is the executive
- 1:03- vice president
- 1:04- and chief health impact officer at Nemours Children's
- 1:08- Health.
- 1:09- Nemours Children's Health is one of the most
- 1:10- magnificent
- 1:11- pediatric health systems in the country.
- 1:14- Doctor Harris, so thrilled to be joined by
- 1:16- you today. Can you take a moment and
- 1:18- tell us a little bit about both yourself
- 1:19- and about Nemours Children's Health?
- 1:22- Absolutely. And thank you for having me. I
- 1:25- am doctor Patrice Harris. As you noted, I
- 1:28- am a child and adolescent
- 1:30- psychiatrist,
- 1:31- pediatric
- 1:32- psychiatrist
- 1:33- by training.
- 1:35- I
- 1:36- have a long and varied career
- 1:39- from private practice to working now in this
- 1:43- large health system.
- 1:45- I've been focused on individual care, population health,
- 1:49- public health,
- 1:51- and health care policy. And I
- 1:54- feel like... And I have the wonderful opportunity
- 1:57- to bring that all together
- 1:59- in this opportunity
- 2:01- at Nemours.
- 2:04- And and take a second. You also served
- 2:06- as the presence of the American Medical Association.
- 2:09- So you've had this incredible impact in a
- 2:12- lot of different places. Congratulations.
- 2:15- Talk about
- 2:17- what you're most focused on and excited about
- 2:19- it in Morse Children's Health.
- 2:21- So I'm most excited, of course, as a
- 2:25- pediatric
- 2:26- psychiatrist,
- 2:28- the work that's going on regarding what we
- 2:31- call whole child health.
- 2:33- I think all of us realize that about
- 2:36- 80%
- 2:38- of what impacts anyone's health, but here we
- 2:41- are focused on children,
- 2:43- takes place where they live, work, and play
- 2:46- outside
- 2:46- the walls of doctors, offices, clinics, and hospitals.
- 2:50- And Moores has made the commitment
- 2:54- to not only, of course,
- 2:57- offer stellar and
- 2:59- excellent care
- 3:00- inside our walls, but also focus with partners
- 3:04- outside of our walls to address
- 3:06- some of those other,
- 3:08- issues
- 3:09- around,
- 3:11- housing stability,
- 3:12- economic,
- 3:14- development,
- 3:16- healthy and fresh
- 3:18- nutritious
- 3:19- foods. And so
- 3:21- that is a core concept of the work
- 3:24- of Nemours regarding whole child health. And I'm
- 3:27- even more... So I'm very excited about that.
- 3:30- Even more excited about a signature focus on
- 3:33- kindergarten readiness.
- 3:34- Because if you talk about upstream,
- 3:37- that is upstream.
- 3:40- So much of
- 3:42- what happens to children again happens in those
- 3:45- first five years, and we know it's very
- 3:48- important for children to come to school ready
- 3:50- to learn.
- 3:51- And so a signature focus
- 3:54- of Nemours
- 3:55- is that,
- 3:56- early childhood
- 3:57- lifespan
- 3:58- investment,
- 4:00- making sure they are healthy and ready to
- 4:02- learn, by the way, and not just whether
- 4:03- they know their ABCs and one, two, thirties,
- 4:06- the literacy part. That's important.
- 4:08- But the other critical components, again, being healthy,
- 4:12- emotional regulation,
- 4:14- social
- 4:15- skills. So I'm most excited about that work,
- 4:18- that is going on at Nemours.
- 4:22- And and talk for a second. The leadership
- 4:24- of yourself,
- 4:25- the leadership of doctor Moss,
- 4:28- it sounds so much like this thought process.
- 4:31- The whole child
- 4:33- trying to make sure people are ready to
- 4:35- be
- 4:36- ready for school, ready for kindergarten, ready to
- 4:39- go
- 4:40- seems so much the the the sort of
- 4:42- fabric
- 4:43- of what you're trying to do at Nemours.
- 4:46- Is it a fair sense of how Nemours
- 4:48- is looking at things, which is so different
- 4:51- than so many other health systems and and
- 4:53- so, I think, fascinating and so positive?
- 4:56- How much is that the fabric of what
- 4:57- you're trying to do at Nemours?
- 4:59- It is absolutely the fabric. I I would
- 5:01- say it's woven into the DNA of Nemours,
- 5:04- this commitment. And listen, this is not new
- 5:06- information. We... We've known for years, of course,
- 5:09- that we we, the royal we, this country,
- 5:12- you know, broader than even the health care,
- 5:15- ecosystem or the health ecosystem, I like to
- 5:18- say, because it's...
- 5:19- Health care is important. And, ultimately,
- 5:23- at the at the end of the day,
- 5:24- we want folks, to be healthy, but it
- 5:26- is woven into the the DNA and the
- 5:29- commitment. Right? And and, again, not a new
- 5:31- concept, but what I,
- 5:33- see at Nemours. And by the way,
- 5:36- I am just completing my first sixty days.
- 5:39- I started August 3. But what made me
- 5:42- so,
- 5:43- so interested and excited about,
- 5:46- coming to Nemours was this work is at
- 5:50- the core
- 5:51- and the commitment of leadership. You mentioned doctor
- 5:55- Moss. He,
- 5:56- is passionate about this commitment of of leadership
- 5:59- all across,
- 6:01- the system at Nemours,
- 6:03- to really,
- 6:04- put into action. Right? We... We've all known
- 6:07- that we need to do this, but,
- 6:09- you know, it's it's difficult
- 6:11- in the health care environment sometimes to make
- 6:14- change. It's a it's a big complicated,
- 6:17- system, but Nemours is committed,
- 6:20- to that and committed to this different way
- 6:22- of thinking. And what Nemours wants to do
- 6:25- is learn. We're early in this. We want
- 6:28- to learn, test,
- 6:29- measure
- 6:30- what works, what doesn't work, and then we
- 6:33- wanted to scope and scale. We want every
- 6:35- system, and we'll say pediatric,
- 6:37- system, but, really,
- 6:39- systems across,
- 6:41- this country to to think about, and we
- 6:44- wanna be a model,
- 6:46- for thinking in this way, whole child health
- 6:48- and early early intervention.
- 6:52- You... You've had this incredible
- 6:54- leadership career,
- 6:55- both
- 6:56- psychiatrist
- 6:57- and we're so short psychiatrists in our country,
- 7:00- leadership at one of the most prestigious
- 7:02- medical societies in the world,
- 7:05- now chief health impact officer at a great
- 7:08- system.
- 7:09- What advice would you give to evolving leaders
- 7:12- about leadership or about career development?
- 7:15- Any thoughts you'd share with others trying to
- 7:17- follow such a great path?
- 7:20- Absolutely.
- 7:21- Because,
- 7:23- I've had the wonderful opportunity and privilege,
- 7:27- to
- 7:28- have
- 7:29- multiple leadership roles in different venues. And, you
- 7:33- know, the year that I was president of
- 7:34- the American Medical associate... Association
- 7:37- happened to be during COVID.
- 7:39- But the night I was inaugurated,
- 7:41- of course, we had a ceremony, and I
- 7:44- had a line from one of my
- 7:46- favorite poems about leadership on my program.
- 7:50- And I'll paraphrase, but it just notes that
- 7:52- leadership can sometimes be lonely.
- 7:55- Often leaders stand in that lonely place
- 7:58- between the no longer and the not yet.
- 8:02- But
- 8:03- though it may be lonely and hard sometimes,
- 8:06- at the end of the day, it's an
- 8:07- opportunity to
- 8:09- drive
- 8:10- innovation,
- 8:12- create history, forge new ground. And so, you
- 8:15- know, in addition to my work at Nemours,
- 8:17- that's why I've been so excited about participating
- 8:20- on the
- 8:21- National Commission on
- 8:24- Public Health because public health
- 8:26- may seem
- 8:28- abstract and sometimes may seem invisible,
- 8:32- but it's really about the day to day.
- 8:34- Do I have clean water? Do I have
- 8:36- clean air? Is my community health and
- 8:39- and and safe... Healthy and and and safe?
- 8:42- And I, again,
- 8:43- think that, there's so many ties to public
- 8:46- health work and and work we're doing at,
- 8:49- Nemours upstream that I'm I'm very excited to
- 8:52- have had these opportunities. So to leaders, I
- 8:54- say it's sometimes lonely,
- 8:57- well worth
- 8:58- it. Take the opportunity
- 9:00- and create and bind
- 9:02- and forge history.
- 9:05- I I just love that. And and doctor
- 9:07- Harris,
- 9:08- anything else? I think that's so inspiring, and
- 9:11- I love that. And And I have a
- 9:12- daughter that's in a public health, so I
- 9:13- just love that. Talk for a second about
- 9:16- anything else that you're particularly watching currently, trends
- 9:20- you're watching, or since you'd like to share
- 9:22- with the audience today?
- 9:24- Well, as you know, and the audience is
- 9:26- aware, there's so much going on in health
- 9:30- care right now. And and I would say
- 9:32- that... I like to sort of think broadly.
- 9:36- And I would say
- 9:37- transformation
- 9:38- sums up what's going on. Right? New medications,
- 9:42- new therapy. How are we going to use
- 9:44- technology? So transformation,
- 9:46- making sure we are having informed conversations about,
- 9:50- transformation. And again,
- 9:52- two issues of public health. We need to
- 9:55- make sure that, our local leaders, you know,
- 9:58- the... Where the rubber
- 9:59- meets the road is at the local level,
- 10:02- state and local level. So it's about
- 10:04- having those conversations
- 10:06- about what we need to do to transform
- 10:09- maybe the way we talk about things. We
- 10:12- test things at the local level when it
- 10:14- comes to public health. And then on the
- 10:16- Namor side transformation into
- 10:19- how we think about ensuring that the next
- 10:22- and future generations of children
- 10:24- are the healthiest
- 10:26- they can be. Because, listen, healthy children
- 10:29- become healthy adults,
- 10:32- and that inures to the benefit of society.
- 10:34- So whether we're talking about public health and
- 10:37- what we need to do to ensure that
- 10:39- communities are thriving and safe so that individuals...
- 10:43- Again, I'm a pediatric psychiatrist and at Nemours,
- 10:47- we focus on children
- 10:49- so that children have the thriving healthy communities
- 10:52- they need
- 10:53- and that we can work in partnership again
- 10:56- to create the next generation of children that
- 10:59- is healthier.
- 11:02- Thank you. I did... I just love that.
- 11:03- Doctor Harris, what a pleasure to visit with
- 11:05- you. I love the work that Nemours Children's
- 11:07- is doing.
- 11:09- Tremendous leadership.
- 11:11- So lucky to have you aboard helping to
- 11:13- lead there. Thank you for joining us today
- 11:15- on the Becker's Healthcare podcast. Thank you very
- 11:17- much. Thank you for having me.
