- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Thursday, it's the
- 0:1627th of February. And here we are again, ready to
- 0:20read some more of this fascinating story of king after
- 0:24king after king. Well, today is a little bit
- 0:27different. Today we're only going to hear
- 0:28about one king and it's a it's a short reading today.
- 0:32And today we hear a king attempting the opposite strategy
- 0:37of of what the other kings around him have been doing.
- 0:40Other kings are aligned with other small nations to try and
- 0:43stand up against the larger force.
- 0:46But in this reading today, we hear of this King Ahaz, who
- 0:50doesn't do what God wants him to do.
- 0:52But instead when he sees this great force coming down, he says
- 0:57to the force, how about I will become a vassal state for you?
- 1:02And you might think, vassal, what the heck is a vassal?
- 1:05It's not really a word that we use very much in the modern
- 1:08world. So here's a little bit of
- 1:10clarity for you. Back in the feudal world,
- 1:13communities would come before the overlord and they would say,
- 1:16we will do whatever you ask us to do.
- 1:19We will submit to you in return for your protection of us.
- 1:23And so they become this what they called a vassal, this
- 1:27province, if you like, of this overlord agreeing to do whatever
- 1:32it is that they are asked to do. They capitulate, they surrender,
- 1:35and they become a party to the greater force, but in the
- 1:39process do not get destroyed. So we'll call this the Ahaz
- 1:44plan, and you'll see how that plays out in today's reading.
- 1:47So let's get to it. Let us read this short reading
- 1:50together hearing about the ways of the kings trying to survive
- 1:55in a very dog eat dog world as we read together Second Kings
- 2:01chapter 16. Ahaz, son of Jotham began to
- 2:14rule over Judah in the 17th year of King Pika's reign in Israel.
- 2:19Ahaz was 20 years old when he became king, and he reigned in
- 2:23Jerusalem 16 years. He did not do what was pleasing
- 2:28in the sight of the Lord his God, as his ancestor David had
- 2:31done. Instead, he followed the example
- 2:34of the kings of Israel, even sacrificing his own son in the
- 2:38fire. In this way he followed the
- 2:42detestable practises of the Pagan nations the Lord had
- 2:45driven from the land ahead of the Israelites.
- 2:48He offered sacrifices and burnt incense at the Pagan shrines and
- 2:52on the hills and under every green tree.
- 2:57Then King Rezn of Aram and King Pika of Israel came up to attack
- 3:01Jerusalem. They besieged Ahaz but could not
- 3:05conquer him. At that time the king of Edom
- 3:08recovered the town of Elath for Edom.
- 3:11He drove out the people of Judah and sent Edomites to live there
- 3:15as they do to this day. King Ahaz sent messages to King
- 3:20Tiglath Pillasa of Assyria with this message.
- 3:25I am your servant and your vassal.
- 3:27Come up and rescue me from the attacking armies of Iran and
- 3:32Israel. Then Ahaz took the silver and
- 3:35gold from the Temple of the Lord and the palace treasury and sent
- 3:40it as a payment to the Assyrian king.
- 3:43So the king of Assyria attacked the Aramean capital of Damascus
- 3:47and LED its population away as captives, resettling them in
- 3:51Kerr. He also killed King Resin.
- 3:55King Ahaz then went to Damascus to meet with King Tiglath
- 4:00Pillasa of Assyria. While he was there, he took
- 4:04special notes of the altar. Then he sent a model of the
- 4:08altar to Uriah the priest, along with its design in full detail.
- 4:13Uriah followed the King's instructions and built an altar
- 4:16just like it, and it was ready before the king returned from
- 4:20Damascus. When the king returned, he
- 4:24inspected the altar and made offerings on it.
- 4:27He presented a burnt offering and a grain offering.
- 4:30He poured out a liquid offering, and he sprinkled the blood of
- 4:34peace offerings on the altar. Then King Ahaz removed the old
- 4:39bronze altar from its place in front of the Lord's temple
- 4:42between the entrance and the new altar and placed it on the north
- 4:45side of the new altar. He told Uriah the priest use the
- 4:50new altar for the morning sacrifices of burnt offerings,
- 4:53the evening grain offering, the King's burnt offering and grain
- 4:57offering and the burnt offerings of all the people as well as
- 5:01their grain offerings and liquid offerings.
- 5:04Sprinkle the blood from all the burnt offerings and sacrifices
- 5:07on the new altar. The bronze altar will be for my
- 5:11personal use only. Uriah the priest did just as
- 5:15King Ahab commanded him. Then the king removed the side
- 5:20panels and basins from the portable water carts.
- 5:24He also removed the great bronze basin called the sea from the
- 5:28back of the bronze oxen and placed it on the stone pavement
- 5:32in deference to the king of Assyria.
- 5:35He also removed the canopy that had been constructed inside the
- 5:39palace for use on the Sabbath day, as well as the King's outer
- 5:43entrance to the Temple of the Lord.
- 5:46The rest of the events in Ahaz's reign and everything he did are
- 5:50recorded in the Book of the History of the Kings of Judah.
- 5:54When Ahaz died, he was buried with his ancestors in the City
- 5:58of David. Then his son Hezekiah became the
- 6:02next King. Jesus, we are so grateful for
- 6:17you that your love for us and your dedication to us does not
- 6:22falter. We are such wayward folk, our
- 6:28will and our desire and our behaviours, they just blow back
- 6:34and forth like reeds in the wind as our hearts are so fickle.
- 6:40Our Lord, but we can just rely on you that when you are
- 6:44committed to us, that commitment is not reliant on us and on our
- 6:49ability to be obedient to You. But you are steadfast in your
- 6:53commitment to us, your love for us, and your provision for us.
- 6:59Ah, we just thank you that your character, that your very
- 7:04essence is that unchanging rock of grace, of justice, and of
- 7:11love for us. Thank you for being a God who is
- 7:16always for us. Ah, we don't deserve it, but we
- 7:20are so grateful for it, for everything you've done for us,
- 7:24Jesus. And so we place you at the
- 7:27highest place in our lives and commit ourselves again afresh to
- 7:31you today. And pray all of this in your
- 7:34name, Amen.
