- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to a new season of Yukon women's basketball. It
- 0:03Speaker 1: is the first coaches show of the season, with the
- 0:06Speaker 1: fortieth year Hall of Fame head coach of the Huskies
- 0:09Speaker 1: Gino Oriema, ready to do it again pursuits of conference championships,
- 0:15Speaker 1: Final fours and national Championships's that's never changed since you've
- 0:20Speaker 1: been there. Okay, maybe since nineteen ninety one when you
- 0:23Speaker 1: went to your first Final four, But it never changes
- 0:26Speaker 1: the goals, do they?
- 0:28Speaker 2: I would say I would say that pretty much since
- 0:35Speaker 2: you know, since nineteen ninety one. You know, we thought
- 0:42Speaker 2: that this is the turning point. But then ninety two
- 0:46Speaker 2: ninety three we were kind of average, so we almost
- 0:51Speaker 2: kind of gave up on it. But then ninety four
- 0:55Speaker 2: and ninety five, those two seasons the way they played
- 0:59Speaker 2: out right after that, So that would be thirty years
- 1:04Speaker 2: of the expectation here is final four and or national championship.
- 1:12Speaker 2: It's a long time to be to be at that,
- 1:17Speaker 2: you know, at that spot where only one thing matters, unfortunately,
- 1:27Speaker 2: you know, but no one else has done it longer.
- 1:33Speaker 2: So I feel pretty good about that.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And folks can follow along. A Learfield is doing a
- 1:39Speaker 1: video project called The Standard and they've done it for
- 1:41Speaker 1: a few years, but this year, at least preseason basically
- 1:45Speaker 1: chroniclizing the road of Yukon women's basketball. And I think
- 1:49Speaker 1: this week's episode is entitled we Have Diana and You
- 1:52Speaker 1: Don't something like that. But it's been a really wild
- 1:55Speaker 1: ride and gin know to In fact, let's let's stay
- 1:58Speaker 1: with that for a minute. What's that project been like
- 2:00Speaker 1: for you putting that together?
- 2:04Speaker 2: Yeah, we have so many people involved in in in
- 2:10Speaker 2: this particular season, it's hard to keep track of when
- 2:14Speaker 2: you're talking to somebody. I mean, this is probably the
- 2:17Speaker 2: only one where I know, you know, this is iHeartRadio
- 2:20Speaker 2: and Bob Joyce to the voice of the Huskies. Everybody
- 2:23Speaker 2: else did I talk to? I have to always like
- 2:26Speaker 2: can they wear a name? Tax so I know where
- 2:27Speaker 2: they're from and what they're doing and what they want
- 2:30Speaker 2: to know and why and and so the the excitement
- 2:36Speaker 2: and the way that people are treating this particular season,
- 2:43Speaker 2: you know, on the heels of what happened last season
- 2:46Speaker 2: nationally and here at Yukon, it's it's an exciting time
- 2:51Speaker 2: if you're a women's basketball player, and especially at Yukon
- 2:55Speaker 2: where expectations, like we said, are sky high and the
- 3:00Speaker 2: level with sky high, and you know you get seven
- 3:02Speaker 2: thousand people for exhibition game against the Division two school,
- 3:07Speaker 2: you know that that pretty much says it all.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Yeah, in fact, let's see, I think I can kind
- 3:13Speaker 1: of on one hand, who's been longer than me covering
- 3:14Speaker 1: this team. This is your twenty three for me, Carl,
- 3:17Speaker 1: Megan and maybe Roger and that's it. Yeah, that's been
- 3:21Speaker 1: quite a ride in a few championships. Speaking of Sunday,
- 3:26Speaker 1: what'd you think first time out in front of the public, you.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Know, given who who we were going to put out there,
- 3:39Speaker 2: I thought Paige was going to be Paige and she was.
- 3:45Speaker 2: That's kind of what she's looked like every day in practice.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I thought Sarah would show her versatility in so many
- 3:55Speaker 2: different areas of the game. Uh, and she did.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Uh.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Some of the young guys I thought would probably uh
- 4:06Speaker 2: take some time, and I think they they did. Q
- 4:11Speaker 2: was a huge, pleasant surprise the last couple of weeks
- 4:17Speaker 2: of practice. She's been really, really good. That's the way
- 4:19Speaker 2: she's been at practice. She gives us a dimension out
- 4:22Speaker 2: there that we don't have right now. Ash and Shade
- 4:27Speaker 2: actually played yesterday or Sunday better than she had been practicing.
- 4:31Speaker 2: So that's a great sign, you know, and the and
- 4:36Speaker 2: the other two bigs, uh, you know, Ice, and and
- 4:41Speaker 2: and Jenna have got some some work to do because
- 4:48Speaker 2: we need we need them to be productive every single night,
- 4:52Speaker 2: whatever that means, you know, whether it's points or rebounds,
- 4:56Speaker 2: or assists or steals or protecting the or making a
- 5:01Speaker 2: couple of shots, you know, keeping people, you know, honest,
- 5:06Speaker 2: but being factors in the game. So they they weren't
- 5:11Speaker 2: a factor in the game, and you know, we need
- 5:14Speaker 2: them to be if we want to accomplish our goals.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Two things have to happen, right. We have to get
- 5:19Speaker 2: our injured players back, and slowly but surely they'll be back.
- 5:23Speaker 2: And then we have to get production from not just
- 5:27Speaker 2: our perimeter guys shooting threes, but we have to get
- 5:32Speaker 2: defensive and offensive production from our big guys.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it's big, big shoes to feel for Elia Edwards.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Let's let's talk to you for a minute. What exactly
- 5:39Speaker 1: when you mentioned gives you some things that you didn't
- 5:42Speaker 1: have in the past year with Cadence? What did What
- 5:44Speaker 1: is she doing well.
- 5:47Speaker 2: With Q yep? Well, last year I thought her mindset
- 5:56Speaker 2: was every time I get it, I'm gonna shoot it.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And that's pretty much what she did. And sometimes they
- 6:02Speaker 2: were good shots, sometimes they were bad shots, sometimes they
- 6:04Speaker 2: were horrible shots. And this year I truly believe that
- 6:11Speaker 2: she's made a concerted effort to be more than that.
- 6:15Speaker 2: So defensively, offensive, rebounding, defensive rebounding, slashing to the basket,
- 6:22Speaker 2: things that you saw. The jump shots still there. It's
- 6:24Speaker 2: really pretty, you know, everybody knows that, but more activity.
- 6:32Speaker 2: And because athletically she can do those things, let's say,
- 6:36Speaker 2: more so than Ash or Alli, you know those guys.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I think that gives us an element that we don't
- 6:45Speaker 2: that we don't have. And when Aubrey comes back and
- 6:49Speaker 2: Asy comes back, and Kk's back on the court this week,
- 6:54Speaker 2: that all of a sudden makes us way more athletic
- 6:56Speaker 2: than we were, you know, the other day, and you know,
- 7:01Speaker 2: Q's Ballhanley's got to get better, her awareness of the
- 7:04Speaker 2: games got to get better. But I was really, really,
- 7:08Speaker 2: really impressed with what she did the other day.
- 7:12Speaker 1: All Right, we'll come back with genl lots of more
- 7:14Speaker 1: to talk about as we preview the twenty four to
- 7:15Speaker 1: twenty five Huskies. Here on the UKUT Women's Basketball Coaches
