- 1:51of all, to say thank you and congratulations
- 1:54for being in business.
- 1:55You guys have a company called Sunday Motor

- 2:53subject, which would be accepting a request to
- 2:58host a show at your facility.
- 3:02So again, this is basically Sunday Motor Co.
- 3:06And so, yeah, so we're hoping that they
- 3:09will say yes to us.
- 3:11We would love to bring the local community
- 3:14together and this is a great way to
- 3:16do it.
- 3:17So again, congratulations to you.
- 3:20Actually Nick and Renee have put a lot
- 3:25of their past experience and passion to work
- 3:26at the Sunday Motor Company.
- 3:29It's a modern American all day cafe and
- 3:31brand.
- 3:32So we would love to come and host
- 3:34a show there.
- 3:35Hopefully you will allow us to do that
- 3:38and we can help bring the community together
- 3:41for both of us.
- 3:42All right, guys, let's kick this show off.
- 3:45All right, let's do that.
- 3:47So welcome, everyone.
- 3:50Your life is not an accident.
- 3:53This is series five, series five, show 25,
- 3:56episode number two.
- 3:58And our title is Stop Beating Yourself Up,
- 4:01Building a Life on Self-Respect.
- 4:03OK, this whole week is your life is
- 4:05not an accident, not self-shame.
- 4:08You see, you can read the straight from
- 4:11people saying it to you or you can
- 4:15get out of a book.
- 4:16And I think that's an important thing to
- 4:18note is that sometimes when we hear it
- 4:21from the horse's mouth, we tend to believe
- 4:23it more.
- 4:23But you could also read a book.
- 4:25Right.
- 4:25So I have 30 points for you guys
- 4:27that I've broken down to three different segments.
- 4:29And I think you guys are going to
- 4:31really enjoy this show.
- 4:32So once again, ladies, gentlemen, a big warm
- 4:35welcome for you here on the inspiration to
- 4:37your life, the daily motivational show that helps
- 4:40you become the person you were always meant
- 4:43to be.
- 4:44Who am I?
- 4:45Oh, sure.
- 4:46I'm John C.
- 4:47Morley.
- 4:47I'm a serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video
- 4:51producer, podcast host, coach, passionate lifelong learner, graduate
- 4:57student.
- 4:58And yes, at Montgomery University.
- 5:01And I am now so grateful to be
- 5:03a published author.
- 5:05And one of things I do when I
- 5:06do these little shows is I do the
- 5:09live show.
- 5:10We interact with some guests if they want
- 5:12to be on the show.
- 5:13And I also do a book signing afterward
- 5:16if the venue would like to do that.
- 5:18I did publish a book.
- 5:19So love to do that.
- 5:20So this week we're in a powerful theme
- 5:23called answering the call, which is what we
- 5:26did yesterday.
- 5:27We talked about how you were not meant
- 5:30for average and how to treat your life
- 5:34like it actually matters.
- 5:35That's our master team for the week, answering
- 5:37the call.
- 5:38And so answering a different kind of call,
- 5:41the call to stop beating yourself up for
- 5:44being human.
- 5:45Yeah, you heard me right.
- 5:47We need to be a little more kind
- 5:48to ourself.
- 5:48This episode basically comes from the concept of
- 5:53what we do to ourselves.
- 5:55We take away the self-respect, we respect
- 5:58others, but then we don't give ourself the
- 5:59same respect.
- 6:01If you are tired of being your own
- 6:03worst critic, of replaying every mistake, of feeling
- 6:07like nothing you do is ever enough, this
- 6:10episode is, well, dialed in just for you.
- 6:14So my question, ladies and gentlemen, is why
- 6:16self-hate doesn't work?
- 6:19Hmm.
- 6:20Let's start out, shall we?
- 6:21First, I'm going to grab another sip of
- 6:23my RO water here.
- 6:26Let's start with something no one ever tells
- 6:28you.
- 6:30You clearly are enough.
- 6:32You cannot hate yourself into a better life.
- 6:35Don't do that.
- 6:36You might think being hard on yourself is
- 6:41what keeps you sharp.
- 6:43You might think shame is what keeps you
- 6:46from messing up again.
- 6:48But here's what really happens.
- 6:51Listen up.
- 6:52When your inner voice sounds like a full
- 6:54time prosecutor.
- 6:56You stop trusting yourself.
- 6:58You stop trying new things.
- 7:00You start assuming you are already guilty before
- 7:04you even begin.
- 7:06Self-hatred doesn't build discipline, guys.
- 7:09It builds exhaustion.
- 7:12It turns every mistake into a verdict.
- 7:15It turns every setback into, quote unquote, proof.
- 7:19That you were never enough to begin with.
- 7:24Think about a friend you truly care about,
- 7:28right?
- 7:28If they came to you right now and
- 7:31said, I messed up.
- 7:33Would you start listing every flaw they've ever
- 7:37had since middle school?
- 7:39Or would you help them get back up
- 7:42where they need to be?
- 7:44Most of us are kinder to strangers than
- 7:46we are to ourselves.
- 7:48That's an interesting conundrum.
- 7:50We tell other people, give yourself some grace.
- 7:55Everyone makes mistakes, right?
- 7:58Everyone makes mistakes.
- 8:00It is OK.
- 8:02You're learning.
- 8:04But when it's us, we say, how could
- 8:08you do that?
- 8:09What's wrong with you?
- 8:11You always ruin things.
- 8:13That's not discipline.
- 8:15That's quiet self-abuse.
- 8:18Today is about flipping that script.
- 8:22Self-respect versus self-shame.
- 8:26Let's talk about the difference, shall we?
- 8:30The difference between self-respect and self-shame.
- 8:34If self-shame says you made a mistake,
- 8:37so you are a mistake.
- 8:39Self-respect says you made a mistake.
- 8:43So let's learn something and move on better.
- 8:47For next time, self-shame attacks your identity.
- 8:51Self-respect guides your behavior.
- 8:54Self-shame whispers, hey, you, you're broken.
- 8:58Self-respect says you are responsible and you
- 9:01are still worthy.
- 9:03When you live in shame, you start believing
- 9:06I am the problem.
- 9:08You tell it to yourself enough times, you
- 9:11really believe it.
- 9:13When you live in self-respect, you start
- 9:16asking, what is the problem and how can
- 9:19I solve it?
- 9:20This matters because you will never consistently care
- 9:24for someone you quietly hate, including yourself.
- 9:30If you see yourself as a consistent, constant
- 9:34disappointment, you will subconsciously sabotage your own progress.
- 9:40Why?
- 9:41It's simple, because people don't invest deeply in
- 9:44things they believe are already ruined.
- 9:48Self-respect is not a free pass to
- 9:51do whatever you want.
- 9:53It is the decision.
- 9:55Here's the key, guys, to treat yourself like
- 9:59someone whose future actually matters.
- 10:02Yeah, that's the point.
- 10:04It is saying I can be honest about
- 10:07where I am and where I went wrong
- 10:10without turning that into a life sentence or
- 10:14blame game.
- 10:16I think a lot of people out there
- 10:17don't understand that it is not about the
- 10:20blame game.
- 10:22That's not going to do anything for you.
- 10:23It's just going to put you down.
- 10:25Right.
- 10:26It's going to put you down and nobody
- 10:28wants to be put down.
- 10:31That's important, guys.
- 10:33So let's get into those rapid fires, OK?
- 10:38You need to stop beating yourself up.
- 10:41I want to give you 30 rapid fire
- 10:43reminders to help you stop beating yourself up
- 10:45and start building a life on self-respect.
- 10:49Here we go.
- 10:50You don't need all 30 of them today,
- 10:52but at least one of these is going
- 10:54to feel like it was written and meant
- 10:56directly for you.
- 10:58Number one, you can't bully yourself into healing.
- 11:02Attack never builds trust.
- 11:05You are allowed to be a work in
- 11:07progress and still be worthy of respect.
- 11:10Being unfinished doesn't make you unworthy, quote unquote.
- 11:14Number three, I messed up is not the
- 11:17same as I am mess.
- 11:20One describes a moment, the other attacks your
- 11:23identity.
- 11:24We all make mistakes.
- 11:26We should learn from those mistakes.
- 11:28Number four, you can be honest about your
- 11:31flaws without hating yourself for having them.
- 11:35You see, honesty and cruelty are not the
- 11:37same tool.
- 11:38Number five, the way you talk to yourself
- 11:41sets the limit on how far you'll let
- 11:44yourself go.
- 11:45If your voice is always harsh, you'll be
- 11:48scared to grow.
- 11:50Number six, you would never talk to someone
- 11:53you love the way you talk to yourself
- 11:56on your worst days.
- 11:58Think about it.
- 12:00That's your key and sign.
- 12:01Something needs to change within us.
- 12:04Number seven, self-respect says, I can do
- 12:08better next time.
- 12:10Not, I don't deserve a next time.
- 12:13You are, ladies and gentlemen, allowed, OK?
- 12:17Another chance.
- 12:20Number eight, you don't have to earn the
- 12:23right to be kind to yourself.
- 12:26Basic humanity applies to you too.
- 12:28It's not just for strangers or people you
- 12:32care about.
- 12:33Number nine, being gentle with yourself is not
- 12:37the enemy of discipline.
- 12:39It is what makes discipline sustainable.
- 12:42But many people I know don't think they
- 12:45actually should do this, right?
- 12:48They don't think they should do this.
- 12:49And the reason is, for whatever reason, they
- 12:51just get, they get stuck in a loop.
- 12:53And this loop says, you know what, this
- 12:55is the way it goes.
- 12:56So I'm gonna keep doing this over and
- 12:58over and over again.
- 13:01I think that's an important piece that, you
- 13:05know, you keep doing it over and over
- 13:06and over again.
- 13:07And I know that can be hard for
- 13:10a lot of people to basically understand.
- 13:14I know that can be hard.
- 13:16Number 10, you are allowed to outgrow the
- 13:20version of you that only knows how to
- 13:23self-attack.
- 13:24Learning a new voice is part of growth.
- 13:28It's learning.
- 13:29I didn't say it was gonna be comfortable.
- 13:31I said you have to practice getting comfortable
- 13:32being uncomfortable.
- 13:33I've said that many times on my shows.
- 13:35Number 11, your past mistakes are chapters.
- 13:39They're not entire stories.
- 13:40They're not the whole book.
- 13:41And you can turn the page without burning
- 13:43the book.
- 13:44You can also rewrite the chapter anytime you
- 13:47want.
- 13:48Number 12, you can take responsibility without taking
- 13:53on permanent guilt.
- 13:55You see, responsibility acts and asks this question,
- 14:00what now?
- 14:01Guilt just asks, what if?
- 14:05See the difference?
- 14:06Number 13, you don't have to replay the
- 14:09worst moment of your life every night before
- 14:13bed.
- 14:14That's not being realistic.
- 14:16That's reopening the wound, the same one that
- 14:19caused you all the problem.
- 14:20What you can do before you go to
- 14:21sleep is think about the scene going the
- 14:25way you wanted it, right?
- 14:28Maybe you're saying, I can't do this.
- 14:30Maybe the dating go the way you want.
- 14:31Maybe somebody didn't say something to you in
- 14:34a nice way.
- 14:35So you can re-envision that with the
- 14:37day going the way you want.
- 14:38And that is very, very powerful if you
- 14:41keep repeating that little short script, that little
- 14:44mini video in your head.
- 14:46Number 14, progress is still progress, even if
- 14:49nobody else claps for it.
- 14:52Your approval can be enough.
- 14:54There was a person I was watching the
- 14:56other day and the person said, okay, give
- 14:57me a, so put your hands together once.
- 15:00Okay, good, do it again.
- 15:01Do it a third time.
- 15:02Oh, great, thank you for applauding for me.
- 15:04So number 15, you are allowed to celebrate
- 15:08the small wins without adding a disclaimer.
- 15:11I did well, but it's self-sabotage in
- 15:15a sentence.
- 15:16It's not.
- 15:18Many people get discouraged with themselves because they're
- 15:21not where they want to be.
- 15:24They're not where they want to be.
- 15:27I think that's a very important thing.
- 15:30Number 16, not everyone who criticized you in
- 15:34the past was right about you.
- 15:36Some of them were just loud, obnoxious, egotistical
- 15:42maniacs, narcissists, right?
- 15:46There's a whole bunch of words I could
- 15:47give you.
- 15:48But that person, nor does any other person
- 15:53have the right to make you feel inferior
- 15:56about yourself.
- 15:57The only person that could do that is
- 15:58you.
- 15:59So don't allow other people to make you
- 16:01feel inferior.
- 16:03Disassociate from them.
- 16:05Number 17, the fact that you care this
- 16:08much about doing better means you are not
- 16:11the villain in your story.
- 16:13Villains don't worry about who they hurt.
- 16:16They just hurt.
- 16:18Think about that for a moment.
- 16:20Let that digest.
- 16:23Number 18, you are allowed to forgive yourself
- 16:27for things you did when you were just
- 16:31trying to survive.
- 16:34Survival mode is not the same as who
- 16:37you really are.
- 16:38But I think we all have gotten stuck
- 16:40in survival mode saying, look, I want to
- 16:41do this now because I need to survive.
- 16:43But it's not about repeating it over and
- 16:45over again.
- 16:45You're just doing it to get by, but
- 16:48it's not the way you want to stay.
- 16:50Does that make sense to people?
- 16:52I'm hoping it does.
- 16:53You can make a big change in your
- 16:55life when you realize that.
- 16:57Number 19, you don't heal by proving you're
- 17:01perfect now.
- 17:02You heal by accepting you won't be and
- 17:08still choosing growth.
- 17:13Choosing growth for a lot of people is
- 17:16uncomfortable.
- 17:17And I said to you before, guys, you
- 17:18have to practice getting comfortable being uncomfortable over
- 17:21and over again.
- 17:21You have to do that.
- 17:22And the more you do that, the easier
- 17:24it's going to be because it's like a
- 17:26muscle, right?
- 17:26When you exercise, the more you use that
- 17:28muscle, the more you can get it.
- 17:30I'll give you a perfect example.
- 17:31Maybe you've done leg exercises and maybe you're
- 17:33on the floor and you try to take
- 17:34your leg and you try to push your
- 17:36leg all the way around.
- 17:37What happens the first few times you do
- 17:38it?
- 17:38You can't do it.
- 17:38But the more you do it, the closer
- 17:41the leg gets to the floor.
- 17:42And eventually you'll be able to take the
- 17:44whole knee and push it all the way
- 17:45down to the floor without any discomfort.
- 17:47But during it, there is some discomfort, right?
- 17:51Number 20, beating yourself up has never once
- 17:56undone a mistake.
- 17:57Never.
- 17:58It only doubled the damage.
- 18:03And most people don't look at, they figure,
- 18:05well, I've got to push harder.
- 18:07I've got to try it again.
- 18:09But really what they're doing is they're hurting
- 18:11themselves.
- 18:12They're hurting themselves.
- 18:15That's a problem, guys.
- 18:19You're hurting your own wellbeing.
- 18:21And that wellbeing, guys, is something I think
- 18:23a lot of people don't understand.
- 18:25I don't think people understand what that's about,
- 18:29but they realize that there's something they have
- 18:32to do.
- 18:35Okay?
- 18:37And I know a lot of people don't
- 18:40quite understand why this works like this, but
- 18:42here, guys, it does.
- 18:44So our mentality will feed what we give
- 18:49it, regardless of whether it's what we want
- 18:52or not, it will keep feeding, okay?
- 18:55That's important to understand, all right?
- 18:59Many people don't get that.
- 19:03And that can make the big difference of
- 19:06your life.
- 19:08It can make a very, very big difference
- 19:10of your life.
- 19:11So change now.
- 19:14Number 21, self-respect sounds like I can
- 19:17learn from this instead of I should disappear
- 19:20because of this.
- 19:23Hear the difference in the tone?
- 19:24I can learn from this and I should
- 19:27disappear from this.
- 19:29One keeps you in the game.
- 19:32And the other kind of says you shouldn't
- 19:35even be playing the game.
- 19:38Number 22, you are closer to who you
- 19:41want to be than the harshest voice in
- 19:45your head will ever admit.
- 19:47We're hard on ourselves.
- 19:49That voice is not an honest narrator.
- 19:52It's there, but it's the voice we're hearing.
- 19:54It's the one that we keep doing over
- 19:56and over and over again.
- 19:57And that becomes a very, very big problem
- 20:00for people, right?
- 20:06That's important, very important.
- 20:13I know a lot of you are probably
- 20:14saying to me, I don't wanna do that
- 20:16because it doesn't feel right.
- 20:18I said, it's not gonna feel right.
- 20:20I said, it's gonna feel uncomfortable.
- 20:25Number 23, guys, the things you regret can
- 20:28become the wisdom you use to guide others.
- 20:33You see, your scars can become instructions, not
- 20:36just reminders of the hurt, but they can
- 20:39teach you that that's not the way you
- 20:41go or that's not what you do to
- 20:43achieve that.
- 20:44Number 24, you don't need to punish yourself,
- 20:49right?
- 20:51To prove you're sorry.
- 20:55Real change is a better apology than self
- 21:00-destruction.
- 21:01But yet people do it every day because
- 21:03they feel that if they persecute themselves enough
- 21:06that they're gonna change.
- 21:07No, they're probably just going to demotivate themselves.
- 21:17That's important, guys.
- 21:19And a lot of people do not understand
- 21:22that.
- 21:27They do not understand that.
- 21:29That is something I think a lot of
- 21:30people, they just don't get it.
- 21:33They don't understand it.
- 21:34Number 25, you are allowed to speak to
- 21:37yourself in the same tone you use with
- 21:41a friend in pain.
- 21:44You are a non-exception to compassion.
- 21:48And I think a lot of us feel
- 21:51that we can't be compassionate to ourselves because,
- 21:54well, if we did, we'd be too soft
- 21:56and nothing would go anywhere, right?
- 22:01If that happens, that's a problem.
- 22:06And then you're like, I don't think I
- 22:07can do this.
- 22:09I don't think I can do this.
- 22:15Maybe you're saying to yourself, this isn't the
- 22:19right thing for you.
- 22:21Maybe you're saying that you're just gonna go
- 22:23one way, but if whatever happens, you're just
- 22:26not, right?
- 22:29And that not, I feel, is what pushes
- 22:32you over the top.
- 22:35Again, not because you're a good or bad
- 22:39person, because of the pattern you get into.
- 22:44And that pattern causes us to basically do
- 22:49without thinking.
- 22:51Number 26, high standards and high self-hatred
- 22:57do not have to live together.
- 23:01You can keep the standard and let go
- 23:03of the abuse right now.
- 23:06There's no need for it.
- 23:08There's no need to live in pain.
- 23:10Discomfort is different than pain, okay?
- 23:21There's no need to live in pain.
- 23:28Discomfort, yes, but not pain.
- 23:34That's important to understand.
- 23:36Very important to understand.
- 23:39And you can change when you realize it's
- 23:44the words you're telling yourself, either out loud
- 23:47or even in your mind.
- 23:50Number 27, guys, the fact that you keep
- 23:53getting back up says more about you than
- 23:57the times you fell.
- 24:00Persistence, guys, is part of your identity too.
- 24:04You know, I learned a long time ago,
- 24:06it doesn't matter how many times you fall.
- 24:09But it does matter how many times you
- 24:11get back up.
- 24:12If you fall four and you get up
- 24:14four, life's great.
- 24:17You fall once, you get up once.
- 24:18You fall 10 times, you get up 10
- 24:19times.
- 24:19But if you fall 10 times and you
- 24:21only get up nine, that means you're still
- 24:23down.
- 24:24That's an important one.
- 24:26Number 28, you are allowed to start believing
- 24:29good things about yourself again.
- 24:32It's not arrogance to acknowledge growth.
- 24:36Most people think they can't imagine growth because,
- 24:39well, they're not there yet.
- 24:41No, bask in the growth.
- 24:43Number 29, you don't fix your life by
- 24:46calling yourself names.
- 24:47You fix it by calling yourself forward.
- 24:52You can do that by praise.
- 24:54You can pat yourself on the back.
- 24:55You don't need to get a pat from
- 24:57anybody else.
- 24:59And if you're waiting for another pat, guess
- 25:01what?
- 25:02You might be waiting a very long time.
- 25:09You might be waiting a very long time.
- 25:12That's important, right?
- 25:20I think that's an important thing for us
- 25:21to understand.
- 25:26And I think sometimes people just don't quite
- 25:28understand that.
- 25:38And I think sometimes we just get lost
- 25:41with that.
- 25:42We don't necessarily know why something is going
- 25:46a certain way, but all we know is
- 25:48we feel something different.
- 25:50And so we respond.
- 25:52A lot of times our neurological system responds
- 25:55before our conscious mind's even aware of it.
- 25:59Number 30, guys, you are not a mistake.
- 26:03Let me say that again.
- 26:03You are not a mistake.
- 26:04You are not a mistake.
- 26:05You are a human being learning how to
- 26:08live your life well.
- 26:09You're a human being learning how to live
- 26:12your life well.
- 26:12You're a human being learning how to live
- 26:15your life well.
- 26:16So I want you to pick one of
- 26:18these today that I've shared with you.
- 26:20Write it down.
- 26:21If you missed it, go back to believemeachieved
- 26:22.com after the show.
- 26:24Make it your sentence for one week.
- 26:26That's all I'm asking you.
- 26:29Three practical shifts to build self-respect.
- 26:33Now let's turn this from inspiration into daily
- 26:38practice.
- 26:39Here are the three simple shifts you can
- 26:41start today to stop beating yourself up and
- 26:44start living with self-respect.
- 26:45You ready?
- 26:46Shift one, change how you talk to yourself
- 26:49after a mistake.
- 26:52The next time you mess up, instead of
- 26:54saying, what's wrong with me?
- 26:56Ask, what can I learn from this without
- 27:00attacking myself?
- 27:02You still hold yourself accountable.
- 27:05You still look honestly at what happened.
- 27:08You just stop adding cruelty on top of
- 27:10the lesson.
- 27:11Shift two, give yourself the same advice you'd
- 27:15give a friend.
- 27:16When you feel like dragging yourself through the
- 27:20mud, pause and ask, if my best friend
- 27:23told me this exact story, what would I
- 27:26say to them?
- 27:27Then say that to yourself.
- 27:29You already know how to be compassionate.
- 27:33You just haven't been including yourself in that
- 27:37circle.
- 27:38And shift three, track one act of self
- 27:41-respect every day.
- 27:42Not 10, not a whole transformation, just one
- 27:46act each day that says, I respect myself.
- 27:51It might be going to bed on time,
- 27:54saying no to something that drains you, apologizing
- 27:57without destroying yourself in the process of finishing
- 28:00the task you promised yourself you would finish.
- 28:03Be sure to check out BelieveMeAchieved.com and
- 28:06re-watch these as many times as you
- 28:08want and stop abusing yourself now.
