- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to an Airwave media podcast. Heally Delicious Friends
- 0:19Speaker 1: and Welcome to Hood and what now the history podcast
- 0:22Speaker 1: That's not Your History Class with me your host Katie Charlewood,
- 0:27Speaker 1: history harlote and reader of books. Well, this has been
- 0:31Speaker 1: an exciting weekend, so I released a special episode. As
- 0:36Speaker 1: you will know if you're not New Year, I released
- 0:38Speaker 1: an episode on the Magdalen Laundries, and I did it
- 0:42Speaker 1: for International Women's Day. It's something that I was planning
- 0:45Speaker 1: to do for a long long time and eventually I
- 0:49Speaker 1: actually did the research, cried a little, and then finally
- 0:52Speaker 1: released it. Now it did well, to say, to the least,
- 0:57Speaker 1: because I was charting, and by charting I mean literally
- 1:03Speaker 1: on the history charts on Apple Podcasts, on Spotify. I
- 1:06Speaker 1: was number one in the History charts in Iceland. I
- 1:09Speaker 1: was number two in the US, five in Canada, four
- 1:13Speaker 1: somewhere else. I was in the top ten in Ireland,
- 1:17Speaker 1: top twenty, UK, Sweden, Norway, Finland. Do you know, could
- 1:24Speaker 1: you maybe not interrup maybe wrong? Sorry? Indeed? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:32Speaker 1: so you say, but yeah, the Magdalen Laundrys episode did
- 1:37Speaker 1: so well and it's I think probably the most important
- 1:43Speaker 1: episode I have ever done in my life, and yeah,
- 1:48Speaker 1: it was. It was weird. Like I was even in
- 1:49Speaker 1: like the actual chart charts, like in the all podcasts,
- 1:53Speaker 1: I was like like twenty in Iceland or twenty five
- 1:56Speaker 1: in Iceland and like seventy five in the US, which know,
- 2:00Speaker 1: making the top one hundred and the overall charts is
- 2:03Speaker 1: wild to me, Like it's it's absolutely wild. I can't
- 2:07Speaker 1: believe that everything works so well. As you may have noticed,
- 2:12Speaker 1: I do have an extra little co host with me today, say, hi, Hi, Yeah, okay,
- 2:20Speaker 1: so I was supposed to record this before hand, but
- 2:24Speaker 1: I've been so busy that now we have a guest host.
- 2:27Speaker 1: So there's going to be considerably less language, colorful language
- 2:33Speaker 1: in this episode, particularly because of my fresh human. Yeah,
- 2:39Speaker 1: we can't be having that came no bad matter sometimes
- 2:46Speaker 1: to be doing bad words. But we don't want to
- 2:48Speaker 1: shout on the microphone because that's not nice for people's ears.
- 2:51Speaker 2: And yeah, that's just being mean to people.
- 2:55Speaker 1: That is mean. We don't want to hurt their per
- 2:56Speaker 1: earholes to Yeah, but we know what you're thinking. You're
- 3:01Speaker 1: thinking quite your jibber jabber and sacked me totally totally unrehearsed.
- 3:07Speaker 1: We didn't. We didn't plan that at all. But first
- 3:11Speaker 1: we've got to get our source. Long s s are
- 3:16Speaker 1: The Adventures of MEYV the Warrior Queen by Anne Carol
- 3:21Speaker 1: whose big is that mine? Yes, you're big? And we
- 3:26Speaker 1: also have Tombo Colona. I have totally mispronounced that. I've
- 3:33Speaker 1: totally messed that up. Yeah. Maye the Intoxicating One by
- 3:41Speaker 1: Britain Islinger Goddess is in World Culture by Patricia Monahan,
- 3:46Speaker 1: Celtic Culture, a historical Encyclopedia by John Cock, The Real
- 3:52Speaker 1: Queen Maye by Laura O'Brien, And of course we have
- 3:56Speaker 1: our oldes favorites, History dot com and biography dot com.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Are you sitting comfortably good?
- 4:04Speaker 2: Now let's begin.
- 4:06Speaker 1: So this week's story is about Queen may who was
- 4:11Speaker 1: a bit of a badass, to be honest, and it's
- 4:13Speaker 1: very interesting because did she exist maybe? Is the history
- 4:21Speaker 1: of it? Yeah, like you ever wanted to know if
- 4:23Speaker 1: she existed?
- 4:25Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 4:26Speaker 1: And the thing is we're not sure. So basically back
- 4:32Speaker 1: in the day, what happened was stories would often change,
- 4:38Speaker 1: especially about the past, and you know, mythology and history
- 4:44Speaker 1: sort of combine, and what you'll notice with a lot
- 4:47Speaker 1: of Irish mythology especially is it's very much a yes,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and it's it's kind of like what happened when Christianity
- 4:56Speaker 1: came in and overtook everything, and so all of the
- 5:02Speaker 1: mythology would suddenly have this like really christian bit the end.
- 5:06Speaker 1: It's like really bad improv but for history, and it
- 5:09Speaker 1: would go yes, and and that happened a lot. And
- 5:13Speaker 1: the way that Maeve is often described through her stories
- 5:18Speaker 1: is not in a very positive light. They weren't very
- 5:23Speaker 1: nice about her, baby girl. They were mean. Oh okay,
- 5:28Speaker 1: So some people say that she was a big ilmini,
- 5:33Speaker 1: and I think she was just a woman standing up
- 5:38Speaker 1: for her rights, because every time she shows up in
- 5:43Speaker 1: one of the sort of stories, whenever she appeals, it's
- 5:48Speaker 1: because some dude has done something that's forced her to
- 5:53Speaker 1: come into the story. It's forced her to stand up
- 5:55Speaker 1: and go no. But I suppose we should start at
- 6:00Speaker 1: the beginning. Oh and also I thought, with how heavy
- 6:05Speaker 1: the last episode, was probably better to go a bit later.
- 6:09Speaker 1: And I think, you know, the one hundred CE seems
- 6:16Speaker 1: like a good seems like a good time. I think
- 6:18Speaker 1: we're far enough in the past to kind of be
- 6:21Speaker 1: a bit more chill but yeah, may was born somewhere
- 6:25Speaker 1: first century, like fifty fifty one CE. I think is
- 6:29Speaker 1: like her birth ish we think, we think maybe very
- 6:35Speaker 1: long time ago. And she was born into royalty. His
- 6:42Speaker 1: dad was e Fela, that's absolutely right. I Fela was
- 6:48Speaker 1: the High King of Ireland, making May of A a princess,
- 6:56Speaker 1: and he was the High King of Ireland. So there
- 6:58Speaker 1: would be four kings in Ireland for each of the provinces.
- 7:05Speaker 1: So the King of Ulster, the King of Connacht, the
- 7:08Speaker 1: King of Munster. Forgot Munster there for a second, and
- 7:13Speaker 1: Connacht Ulster Munster, Oh goodness, what's the one? What's the
- 7:17Speaker 1: other one? Leinster, Leinster. There's four provinces, and in those
- 7:22Speaker 1: provinces there were counties, okay, so in the provinces there
- 7:28Speaker 1: would be a king of each and then ruling all
- 7:30Speaker 1: of those kings would be the High King, because he's
- 7:34Speaker 1: like the kingiest king, the super king, the burger king,
- 7:38Speaker 1: if you will, maybe the best king, the best king.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Maybe he was the best king kind or the king, oh,
- 7:48Speaker 1: the kindest king, not a kind of king. So you know,
- 7:52Speaker 1: things are okay, mayves a wee bit impestuous growing up,
- 7:56Speaker 1: you know, being the daughter of a king, one would
- 7:58Speaker 1: expect that being an Irish women also, yes, but she
- 8:03Speaker 1: grows up against like the teenage stage. And at this
- 8:06Speaker 1: point she is unsurprisingly causing some problems for her dad,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and he's a wee bit stressed out and he's like.
- 8:17Speaker 2: What will I deal with her? She's young and beautiful
- 8:21Speaker 2: and I love her daily, but she's a terrible tourament torment.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Yeah, so yeah, she's she's causing a bit of problem,
- 8:30Speaker 1: maybe some teenage angst. Whom's to say, but she's she's
- 8:36Speaker 1: things are going well for him, right, but she's an
- 8:39Speaker 1: absolute stunner. There's also a massive battle where he kills
- 8:45Speaker 1: the King of Ulster and then his son, the Prince
- 8:49Speaker 1: of Ulster. Woman assume becomes the King of Ulster, and
- 8:53Speaker 1: he likes to collect things. He wants the best of
- 8:58Speaker 1: everything and the new of Ulster. He sends away messenger
- 9:02Speaker 1: over to Eca and the messenger lets him know that
- 9:07Speaker 1: Connor has a massive palace.
- 9:12Speaker 2: He has lots of good amy, Red branch Night is
- 9:20Speaker 2: the best in.
- 9:21Speaker 1: The world, and his nephew is Cook Holland you know
- 9:26Speaker 1: Cook Colin, who wants the tantumth and he hit his
- 9:30Speaker 1: ball with a hurleyan got rid of the dog. But yeah,
- 9:35Speaker 1: so basically he becomes the hound of Colin Cook Colin
- 9:38Speaker 1: big super awesome warrior. Big deal. Right, So this whole
- 9:42Speaker 1: family doing really well, but this messenger is just like
- 9:46Speaker 1: blowing smoke out of his ass. He's like, he's bright,
- 9:49Speaker 1: he's the best, he's amazing, he's got the best of this,
- 9:52Speaker 1: he's got the best of that. It's like he needs
- 9:55Speaker 1: the best of everything. And he is like right and
- 10:01Speaker 1: just like cool, you're here, what do you want? And
- 10:05Speaker 1: he's like, well, the thing is what he doesn't have
- 10:09Speaker 1: the best of is a wife, and your daughter, the
- 10:13Speaker 1: Princess of the entirety of Ireland is the most beautiful
- 10:18Speaker 1: woman in all the land, and so he must have
- 10:22Speaker 1: her naturally. The hi King is like, I'll think about it.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I guess yeah, And the messagers that corner wants three
- 10:37Speaker 1: things and a wife, and what the three things? Baby
- 10:43Speaker 1: must think.
- 10:48Speaker 2: His bedding and doctor him very well, and.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So that means she's got to be there best, the best.
- 10:58Speaker 1: So he was like, all right, actually, now that you
- 11:01Speaker 1: mention it, maybe is the best and I won't have
- 11:05Speaker 1: anybody saying it against it, So yeah, they can totally
- 11:09Speaker 1: get married. That's fine, you have my blessings. Fabulous. I
- 11:13Speaker 1: mean also, he was feeling a wee bit bad because
- 11:17Speaker 1: he killed, you know, his dad. So here's a consolation prize,
- 11:21Speaker 1: my daughter, that'll make up for your deceased father. Cool. Basically,
- 11:29Speaker 1: as soon as the invitations were out, Connor mcnessa and
- 11:33Speaker 1: Maye get married in Tara. And after they get married
- 11:38Speaker 1: in Tara, they head off back to Connor's castle up
- 11:43Speaker 1: in Allstar, and so off they go, and everyone's really happy.
- 11:47Speaker 1: This is a great match. It's great power. They're well played.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Everybody is happy, except, as you may have guessed it,
- 11:57Speaker 1: may so within a here Mayb and Connor have a son, Glos,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and she loves her son, but she absolutely despises her husband.
- 12:10Speaker 1: He is just self inflated for self importance. He wants
- 12:17Speaker 1: a basic, easy we wife is just gonna do his bedding,
- 12:22Speaker 1: and she's, uh, she's not that.
- 12:26Speaker 2: She's not.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Like remember when reading The Beast in Gaston's like, I
- 12:31Speaker 1: can't wait to have my wife getting ready to make
- 12:35Speaker 1: my food and wash my feet whatever, and I was like,
- 12:39Speaker 1: hell no, that's what this is.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Like.
- 12:42Speaker 1: He wanted this great, amazing situation and he's always being
- 12:53Speaker 1: a bit of a pain, Like he's going out of
- 12:55Speaker 1: his way to make her life horrible, to make her miserable,
- 13:01Speaker 1: because I heard up at this not a good dude,
- 13:05Speaker 1: not want to be stuck in an awful marriage. May
- 13:10Speaker 1: confronts her husband and says, listen, I know the only
- 13:14Speaker 1: reason you married me is because you wanted a trophy wife,
- 13:18Speaker 1: like I am a prize and you just wanted me
- 13:23Speaker 1: to adorn your shelf. Like that's it. You have no
- 13:26Speaker 1: interest in me as a person, and frankly, I can
- 13:30Speaker 1: do better. And he's like the best, You're not the best,
- 13:36Speaker 1: You're the absolute worst. And shockingly enough, she did not
- 13:41Speaker 1: take this well and she decides to leave, and off
- 13:45Speaker 1: she goes. She straight up leaves him like this is
- 13:50Speaker 1: during a period of time as well where she could
- 13:53Speaker 1: do that, like women in this period had more rights
- 13:57Speaker 1: just due to the bread and laws. Right, So she
- 14:00Speaker 1: ends up adios or is n sloan and heads back
- 14:06Speaker 1: to her dad and she arrives there and her dad's
- 14:10Speaker 1: like what the actual mm hmm, like what are you
- 14:17Speaker 1: doing here? Like you should be with your husband or
- 14:20Speaker 1: he is gonna be well insulted. This is not good.
- 14:24Speaker 1: This is not good at all, and so he sends
- 14:27Speaker 1: one of our sisters to replace her. Basically, he's like, hey,
- 14:33Speaker 1: you can marry another one of my daughters. It's fine.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Here's behind mister Rado number two. And Mave absolutely hates
- 14:43Speaker 1: the man. She hates Connor. She hates him so much
- 14:47Speaker 1: with the fire of a thousand sons. So when she
- 14:51Speaker 1: discovers that her sister is going to marry him, she
- 14:55Speaker 1: is loved like, she sees this as a personal insult,
- 15:01Speaker 1: and she feels betrayed by her sister. She's like, you
- 15:04Speaker 1: shouldn't have married him, like you shouldn't have married my
- 15:07Speaker 1: ex husband, who is also an absolute arsehol Like, no,
- 15:12Speaker 1: this is my enemy. You should not have done that.
- 15:15Speaker 1: But she did, and she does well. She is the
- 15:20Speaker 1: you know, a very well behaved, obeying wife. She's doing
- 15:27Speaker 1: exactly what he asks and and is the complete opposite
- 15:31Speaker 1: of me, because Meve is just like not. Things only
- 15:36Speaker 1: get worse when the sister Edna when she gets pregnant,
- 15:44Speaker 1: and May is the epitome of a petty bitch, like
- 15:47Speaker 1: she does not forgive, and she does not forget, like
- 15:52Speaker 1: she really does not forgive, and so she feels slighted
- 15:56Speaker 1: by her sister, and so she plans to have her
- 16:04Speaker 1: muddled like. She hires an assassin, and the assassin goes
- 16:11Speaker 1: in and kills her in the middle of the night
- 16:16Speaker 1: and luckily like but I say luckily, so she's muddled,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and an emergency like cesarean is performed on Ethne and
- 16:31Speaker 1: a healthy baby boy is born for Beta. Unsurprisingly, the
- 16:39Speaker 1: assassination of the Queen of Ulster and the daughter of
- 16:47Speaker 1: the High King of Ireland kind of ruffle some feathers,
- 16:51Speaker 1: that is, and Tara is just like people are pest
- 17:00Speaker 1: and Ulster like, there's a rage and this this causes
- 17:07Speaker 1: so many problems, and and and he iha. The High
- 17:14Speaker 1: King tries tries to mold this around me. But he
- 17:19Speaker 1: tries to, I don't know, create a distraction because he's
- 17:24Speaker 1: not gonna punish Mav. He's not gonna punish her because
- 17:30Speaker 1: I think she's actually his favorite personally. But he is
- 17:37Speaker 1: killing two birds of one stone. So Connacht, the province
- 17:40Speaker 1: of Connacht, has a king, Tenny mcconny. And Tenny Tenny
- 17:46Speaker 1: was he was he was enjoying his life as a king,
- 17:49Speaker 1: and I was like, no, I have decided that I'm
- 17:53Speaker 1: gonna depose you and put my daughter in your place,
- 17:58Speaker 1: and so mave I'm and so may Have becomes the
- 18:01Speaker 1: Queen of Connacht. It was pretty easy to get rid
- 18:05Speaker 1: of Tenny because he didn't really have much of an army,
- 18:08Speaker 1: didn't really have a lot going for him. He was
- 18:11Speaker 1: ever smoking hot, and so he and may Have become lovers.
- 18:17Speaker 1: And this that was handy for a couple of reasons,
- 18:19Speaker 1: One because May've got her kicks in. Two that by
- 18:23Speaker 1: having this sort of alliance with Tenny, there wasn't going
- 18:29Speaker 1: to be this sort of massive bloodshed happening. And Connacht
- 18:36Speaker 1: now maybe ends up traveling to Tara, where the High
- 18:40Speaker 1: King lives, because there's an assembly of all the kings,
- 18:43Speaker 1: and all the kings meet there and when she's there,
- 18:47Speaker 1: trigger warning, she is assaulted by Conqueror, by Connor mcnessa
- 18:54Speaker 1: and revenge for you know, the assassination of his wife,
- 18:59Speaker 1: her sister, and this leads to a full on battle. Actually,
- 19:05Speaker 1: so Tenny ends up challenging Conic Our Conic Kanessa two
- 19:10Speaker 1: single combat, one on one. This doesn't work out too
- 19:14Speaker 1: well for Tenny because he is slain by Connor and
- 19:19Speaker 1: then this this doesn't go down well. This doesn't go
- 19:22Speaker 1: down well, but Ighadala happens to have some pretty good,
- 19:27Speaker 1: you know, critical thinking skills and just takes the army away.
- 19:31Speaker 1: He's like, takes control and he's like, nah, we're gonna
- 19:35Speaker 1: we're gonna go away from this and not, you know,
- 19:38Speaker 1: cause a feel out war feels like a good plan.
- 19:41Speaker 1: So that's what happens there, and he ends up becoming
- 19:45Speaker 1: Maeve's second husband. So May have had her own little
- 19:51Speaker 1: list of you know, points that a future husband should have,
- 19:55Speaker 1: Like she wanted them to be fearless, she wanted them
- 19:59Speaker 1: to be kind of generous, and she wanted them to
- 20:02Speaker 1: not be jealous. Now that's all fine and well, but
- 20:08Speaker 1: Dolla here was a green eyed monster because he's handsome
- 20:13Speaker 1: and he's kind and he's smartness like everything that she
- 20:17Speaker 1: would want, except he's jealous as hell. And so when
- 20:26Speaker 1: May has an affair with one for bodyguards, her chief
- 20:29Speaker 1: bodyguard in fact, Alil mcmata Ihadala, challenges him to a jewel,
- 20:39Speaker 1: a lot of jewels happen in this time, and Alile,
- 20:43Speaker 1: shockingly enough, wins the fight, probably because he is, you know,
- 20:48Speaker 1: the chief bodyguard. He's gonna be handy with a sword.
- 20:51Speaker 1: I feel like if there's anybody you don't want to
- 20:54Speaker 1: challenge to a fight, It's like the personal protector of
- 20:58Speaker 1: the queen feels like they may have a skill set
- 21:01Speaker 1: that would be possibly above your own. I'm I'm just
- 21:05Speaker 1: putting it out there now. May have ends up marrying
- 21:10Speaker 1: al and they've got a fairly decent marriage. Like, they
- 21:17Speaker 1: have a fairly decent marriage, and they end up having
- 21:25Speaker 1: seven sons and one daughter. And so this is interesting.
- 21:33Speaker 1: So mave here's a prophecy. I say he's a prophecy.
- 21:37Speaker 1: She went and met a drud She goes and meets
- 21:40Speaker 1: a druid, and he tells her that Connor will be
- 21:44Speaker 1: slain by someone called Men, a boy called Men, a
- 21:50Speaker 1: man even, And in order to ensure this, she ends
- 21:56Speaker 1: up renaming all of her sons, so which one of
- 22:04Speaker 1: my sons will kill Connor Maine? And she's like right,
- 22:11Speaker 1: realizing she doesn't have a son called Maine, she changes
- 22:16Speaker 1: their names phel Image, carbra Echid, Ferragus, kit Shin, and
- 22:26Speaker 1: Dora So so fil Image becomes Maine Athmo, Carber becomes
- 22:37Speaker 1: main Mathrimo, so like his father, like his mother. Main
- 22:44Speaker 1: Ando is the swift. Main Tie is silent Maine Morgor
- 22:50Speaker 1: of great Duty man musk, honey speech, My Irish is
- 22:57Speaker 1: absolutely choking, isn't it? And then man more beyond description? Imagine,
- 23:03Speaker 1: oh you beyond description. So they have seven sons and wait, no,
- 23:15Speaker 1: or do they just have seven sons together? And she's
- 23:16Speaker 1: got a daughter kloshna, Wait doesn't matter anyway, So she
- 23:24Speaker 1: changes all of her son's names because she's like, one
- 23:27Speaker 1: of them is gonna kill this dude. Fabulous. No, I
- 23:30Speaker 1: was right. She does have a daughter, May and Aliel.
- 23:34Speaker 1: They have a daughter of finderbar and Connor Connor Jark.
- 23:40Speaker 1: So May and her husband Alil they are doing well.
- 23:44Speaker 1: He's kind of Connacht. She's Queen of Connacht. They have
- 23:48Speaker 1: seven sons, two daughters. You know, it's all fine and dandee.
- 23:54Speaker 1: And then one day he decides to say to her that,
- 23:58Speaker 1: you know, yeah, everything you have is because of me,
- 24:04Speaker 1: even though he wouldn't be king of Connacht if he
- 24:06Speaker 1: hadn't married me. But he's like, you know everything, oh,
- 24:10Speaker 1: you're rich is all this? You know it's because in
- 24:14Speaker 1: maves no no, And she is very unhappy because she's
- 24:24Speaker 1: like one of her things that she has to be
- 24:26Speaker 1: as rich as her husband, you know, the whole generous thing.
- 24:31Speaker 1: So the thing about the past is people really put
- 24:35Speaker 1: value in stock and animals, like it was a big deal.
- 24:39Speaker 1: And Alil is going to be getting this super cool,
- 24:43Speaker 1: amazing like bill and it's like the biggest it's fabulous
- 24:49Speaker 1: And the only rival to this bull is the brown
- 24:54Speaker 1: Bull of COOLi and it's up in Ulster and and
- 25:01Speaker 1: owned by Dora so uh Dor mcfigner. He was he
- 25:10Speaker 1: was one of one of the supporters and you know,
- 25:15Speaker 1: cold its surrounding corner mcnessa. And she is desperate to
- 25:25Speaker 1: get this bill, and so she is sending him like guests.
- 25:32Speaker 1: She's got messengers going up and she is offering everything,
- 25:37Speaker 1: and I mean everything she is offering herself. And up
- 25:44Speaker 1: until this point, like up until this point, he's like, no,
- 25:49Speaker 1: maybe not best not upset. Connor can't be having that.
- 25:55Speaker 1: When Mave's like, I will let you visit boomed down,
- 26:03Speaker 1: He's like, oh my yeah, absolutely. One is like definitely
- 26:10Speaker 1: this is gonna happen. And so he's like, yep, you
- 26:13Speaker 1: can totally have my bile. Absolutely fantastic one. And one
- 26:20Speaker 1: of the messengers is like, sweet, this is fine. They
- 26:24Speaker 1: get absolutely slashed because it's you know, the turn of
- 26:29Speaker 1: the millennium, and and beer is better than water, I guess.
- 26:35Speaker 1: So he gets absolutely slashed and he starts talking about well,
- 26:38Speaker 1: if he didn't agree, you know, she was gonna come
- 26:41Speaker 1: take it by force anyway. Naturally, Donna wasn't too keen
- 26:47Speaker 1: on this information and withdrew his consent. He's like, yeah,
- 26:55Speaker 1: you're gonna like aggressively do this. No, no, thank you.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Not happening. And this leads to a war effectively, an
- 27:09Speaker 1: absolute war, and may have not quite used to being
- 27:13Speaker 1: told no, and so she prepares for war, and so
- 27:22Speaker 1: she ends up with this massive army. So she's got
- 27:26Speaker 1: you know, people from all over Ireland, so you've got
- 27:30Speaker 1: an actual group of from Ulster as well. So she's
- 27:34Speaker 1: going to war with the entire province, right, absolutely, the
- 27:38Speaker 1: entire province. And one of the groups in her army
- 27:44Speaker 1: are a bunch of exiles. So Connor has a son
- 27:53Speaker 1: who has been exiled because of a woman, because Connor
- 27:58Speaker 1: had kidnapped this baby who was going to grow up
- 28:02Speaker 1: to be like super hot whatever. Yeah, that's a prophecy
- 28:06Speaker 1: and an Irish mythology slash history. That's that's what that was,
- 28:11Speaker 1: and so she runs away. She's brought back and they're like,
- 28:18Speaker 1: is she's still gorgeous and the son's like, no, she's
- 28:22Speaker 1: old and ugly. And Connor finds out about this blah
- 28:27Speaker 1: blah blah blah blah. One thing leads to another. He's
- 28:29Speaker 1: exiled along with his foster father, Fergus Mcreeth, who was
- 28:36Speaker 1: the king of Ulster, and he is currently say currently
- 28:41Speaker 1: he becomes a lover of Mayve. So Fergus is a
- 28:47Speaker 1: lover of may along with Alol's having his own fun.
- 28:53Speaker 1: It's an open marriage. They are you know, ahead of
- 28:57Speaker 1: their time or whatever. And so yeah, there's this there's
- 29:03Speaker 1: this thing about Fergus that basically said like it would
- 29:06Speaker 1: take thirty men to satisfy me, or Fercus wants like
- 29:11Speaker 1: Doude knows what he's doing, like that's just it, and
- 29:15Speaker 1: so like he ends up, well, he's excelled anyway, and
- 29:22Speaker 1: he is this thing with mey Have because because she's
- 29:26Speaker 1: may Have, who is known as the intoxicated or the
- 29:31Speaker 1: intoxicating one, and so like some people have tried to
- 29:34Speaker 1: say this is about her being a drunk or whatever,
- 29:36Speaker 1: but it's actually just about how amazing and gorgeous and
- 29:43Speaker 1: just astounding she is that men just can't can't handle
- 29:46Speaker 1: it because they're like love drunk, you know. But yeah,
- 29:52Speaker 1: the whole thing with Fercus is like he prefers a
- 29:55Speaker 1: woman's use to like the interior province. Like yeah, all right, mate, sure,
- 30:01Speaker 1: that's that's exactly what happens.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Now.
- 30:08Speaker 1: May've has has apparently superpewals, right, and she creates this
- 30:19Speaker 1: curse allegedly, so her army is like trapesing over the
- 30:25Speaker 1: border into Ulster, and the men of Ulster are all
- 30:30Speaker 1: suddenly overcome with menstrual cramps, that's right, like all across Ulster.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Period pain, like severe period pain. Either that she did
- 30:44Speaker 1: something to the water in the voga, you know, aggressive diarrhea.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Him's to say. But the only person who is not
- 30:54Speaker 1: like taken over with this curse is Coulin, sort of
- 30:59Speaker 1: the nephew of Corner, and so he is this massive hero.
- 31:07Speaker 1: He's like a super you know, dude, and allegedly like
- 31:11Speaker 1: half god, you know, because like hercules like whatever, and
- 31:19Speaker 1: Alo and may were like oh dear, oh dear, oh
- 31:26Speaker 1: dear dear, and they just start offering their daughter. They're like, yeah, anybody,
- 31:33Speaker 1: anybody need a wife, because you you can get a wife.
- 31:38Speaker 1: It's fine. They're like Finderbar. She will be your prize
- 31:45Speaker 1: if you defeat Coucklan. And so all these heroes are
- 31:48Speaker 1: stepping up to the plate. They're like ready to show
- 31:50Speaker 1: off and you know, win her hand in marriage, because
- 31:53Speaker 1: like she is the prize, like she is the next
- 31:57Speaker 1: big thing. And and every single hero, every single person
- 32:03Speaker 1: who went up again to cook Colin loses and like
- 32:11Speaker 1: me for herself, has several interactions with Coolin, like she
- 32:16Speaker 1: keeps like coming across and meeting and all this other stuff,
- 32:20Speaker 1: and like he keeps just just killing the wrong people
- 32:26Speaker 1: or I don't know, just irritating her. I guess, because
- 32:30Speaker 1: at one point he like he's hitting things with his
- 32:34Speaker 1: harley it's harlan stick and he's just like it's like hockey,
- 32:39Speaker 1: I guess if you don't know what that is. And
- 32:41Speaker 1: so he's like hitting a rock or a ball or whatever,
- 32:45Speaker 1: and he ends up like knocking her pet stoat off
- 32:49Speaker 1: of her neck. It's kind of like a ferret. Stoats
- 32:54Speaker 1: are like ferrets. They're from that family, I think. Or
- 32:58Speaker 1: like one of her handmaidens gets just in the temple
- 33:03Speaker 1: and just down like a sack of spuds like stuff
- 33:06Speaker 1: like that keeps happening. And they also also also for
- 33:15Speaker 1: a time they become lovers, because of course they do,
- 33:19Speaker 1: because who can withstand just the allure of may. But yeah,
- 33:27Speaker 1: everybody's like going up to the colony's like challenging everybody.
- 33:31Speaker 1: And for three days, like three days, he is just
- 33:39Speaker 1: going due after due, just like single combat like boom
- 33:43Speaker 1: boom boom. And at the end of these three days,
- 33:48Speaker 1: the curse ends and there was a massive battle. And
- 33:54Speaker 1: at the end of the battle, Mave ends up with
- 33:56Speaker 1: all of these menstrual cramps, like she ends up with
- 33:58Speaker 1: like severe period. She orders like a big retreat. She's like, everybody,
- 34:07Speaker 1: run away, run away, and they do, and Cook gets
- 34:12Speaker 1: to her and puts a spear against her throat. But
- 34:18Speaker 1: then he realized she's on her period, and he decides
- 34:21Speaker 1: not to do anything because she's on a period. I mean,
- 34:25Speaker 1: I I don't know if that's I mean, it's a
- 34:29Speaker 1: good reason not to you know, murder a woman, like
- 34:32Speaker 1: in general, but also cool really really specific reasoning reasoning
- 34:41Speaker 1: there Partly it was an honor thing, because it's less
- 34:46Speaker 1: honorable to kill a woman on her period than not
- 34:50Speaker 1: I guess, I mean, you know, whatever works for you
- 34:54Speaker 1: a well. So they're just having battle after battle like
- 34:58Speaker 1: she will not stop, and cook Colin ends up like
- 35:04Speaker 1: eventually defeated in battle. I think again it's his best friend,
- 35:09Speaker 1: but he ends up being defeated anyway, and she gets
- 35:13Speaker 1: her hands on the bull, and although may have never
- 35:18Speaker 1: actually manages to like win Ulster, she doesn't defeat it.
- 35:23Speaker 1: She does get her hands on the bull, and so
- 35:27Speaker 1: she gets the bill. It gets brought back home and
- 35:33Speaker 1: being two bulls together like yeah, not great because they
- 35:40Speaker 1: have a fight and the brown bull of Cooley ends
- 35:46Speaker 1: up just attacking Alil's bull and effectively they both die.
- 35:56Speaker 1: So one dies quickly, which is Alil's bull, and then
- 36:01Speaker 1: the brown bull of Cooley sort of dies of its injuries.
- 36:04Speaker 1: And so all of this big war was for nothing,
- 36:13Speaker 1: like at all, like no reason for it. It just
- 36:17Speaker 1: kind of all this war and suffering and death for
- 36:21Speaker 1: like no reason all because her husband was like, I
- 36:24Speaker 1: am better than you and I have more than you,
- 36:27Speaker 1: and you should just like be happy that I did
- 36:30Speaker 1: all this for you. Okay, cool, Yeah, I'm a supporter
- 36:35Speaker 1: of women's rights and women's wrongs. Okay, So After a while, Alil,
- 36:46Speaker 1: who's having many feels just kids incredibly bloody jealous of
- 36:51Speaker 1: Fergus because obviously Fergus is a man who knows what
- 36:54Speaker 1: he's doing, and Alol is just enraged, and so he
- 37:03Speaker 1: has Virgo just assassinated. He's like done, can't be dealm
- 37:08Speaker 1: with this, Off he goes. And it's after this that
- 37:15Speaker 1: the hero Corno Kerna comes to stay with al and
- 37:20Speaker 1: May like they're the only people who can like deal
- 37:23Speaker 1: with them because he's just like this big, amazing hero
- 37:28Speaker 1: and also they're the only ones rich enough to deal
- 37:32Speaker 1: with them, and so Mave ends up like hiring Corno
- 37:42Speaker 1: to keep an eye on all so because he's you know,
- 37:48Speaker 1: sticking a spoon and everybody's honeypot and he's just gotten
- 37:52Speaker 1: rid of her lover. So she's very very unhappy with
- 37:56Speaker 1: this scenario, feels like the scales aren't quite matching up,
- 38:02Speaker 1: and she ends up catching Alil in the act and
- 38:09Speaker 1: she orders Conall to you know, get rid of him. See.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Connall was actually really good pals with Fergus and as
- 38:17Speaker 1: such wasn't too keen with Alil, you know, assassinating him.
- 38:23Speaker 1: And when he is like given the offer to just
- 38:26Speaker 1: get rid of alol. He is like, absolutely not a
- 38:30Speaker 1: problem because he does it off your pops and then
- 38:37Speaker 1: alol while he's there, you know, bleeding to death, he
- 38:42Speaker 1: orders his men to like go get him and deal
- 38:45Speaker 1: with them, and connall ends up they're being killed while
- 38:50Speaker 1: trying to like flee the castle. So may have never
- 38:54Speaker 1: actually gets her revenge on Connor mcnessa, and the Connery
- 38:59Speaker 1: ends up being slain by mein right or mom, keep
- 39:04Speaker 1: calling a Maine. That's not correct. It's the mon I believe,
- 39:08Speaker 1: and it's a completely different corner. It's like corner son
- 39:11Speaker 1: of Arthur. It's different, dude, entirely. This is why when
- 39:16Speaker 1: dealing with prophecies and genie wishes and anything like that,
- 39:20Speaker 1: you need to be clear, like it's the same thing,
- 39:22Speaker 1: like you need to be specific, like if you're shaking
- 39:27Speaker 1: that magic eight ball, you need to know the question
- 39:30Speaker 1: you're asking, like because being vague just ain't gonna cut it,
- 39:33Speaker 1: because there are loopholes, just a lot of loopholes. So yeah,
- 39:42Speaker 1: maybe as she gets older, you know, she's still chilling
- 39:46Speaker 1: at a wee bit a little bit less aggressive or onlyast.
- 39:50Speaker 1: She's not doing anything that the men feel is important
- 39:54Speaker 1: enough to write about. She is this a bit of
- 40:02Speaker 1: bathing in this sort of pool pond area of water
- 40:07Speaker 1: an Ennish clorin on Loch Crean, and she was known
- 40:12Speaker 1: going there for a long time and it's just something
- 40:16Speaker 1: she did. It was relaxing, like a spa treatment. But
- 40:19Speaker 1: you know the millennium, the first one, that the second
- 40:23Speaker 1: one with the millennium. Ooh, sorry, uh huh. Some say
- 40:32Speaker 1: that we have players. Some say that we have ponds.
- 40:36Speaker 1: We've been making money since today though we were born. Sorry,
- 40:39Speaker 1: that's some classic Rowby Williams for the other there. But yeah,
- 40:43Speaker 1: it was known that Mave would bathe, May would bathe.
- 40:47Speaker 1: It was known that May would bathe in this pool.
- 40:49Speaker 1: And her nephew for Beta, right, he grows up, you know,
- 40:59Speaker 1: Levid clearly that his auntie murdered his mom and he
- 41:05Speaker 1: wants revenge, and so he starts measuring then you know,
- 41:10Speaker 1: the space between like this area and that area, and
- 41:15Speaker 1: he starts practicing and he's knocking stuff like right between
- 41:20Speaker 1: here and the shore here to this. He's just getting
- 41:22Speaker 1: his skill set up. And then he sees her going
- 41:28Speaker 1: for her bath or whatever, and he gets a slingshot
- 41:34Speaker 1: and he swings it around and he lugs and this
- 41:40Speaker 1: is the official story, a block of cheese or a
- 41:46Speaker 1: mound of cheese, a three D shape of cheese somehow,
- 41:53Speaker 1: and he whacks her with it, and he gets her
- 41:55Speaker 1: right right in the soft part of the head one
- 41:59Speaker 1: would assume, and ends her life like she's just instantly
- 42:09Speaker 1: gone death by cheese and not the way one would expect.
- 42:15Speaker 1: So our son ends up becoming the next brother of
- 42:23Speaker 1: Connacht Mahramil Man Mahramil like his mother. So he ends
- 42:29Speaker 1: up ruling, and she ends up buried standing up, so
- 42:41Speaker 1: she's buried, not gonna ree and Sligo standing up with
- 42:47Speaker 1: a bunch of stones on top of her grave specifically
- 42:53Speaker 1: to stop her from breaking out, like there was a
- 42:56Speaker 1: fear that she was going to come back for revenge,
- 42:58Speaker 1: because again does not forget, does not forget, and that
- 43:03Speaker 1: is why she is facing Ulster staring directly at it
- 43:08Speaker 1: a donegal actually I think straight at Donegal, being like
- 43:13Speaker 1: my enemy is in my sight and that it's the
- 43:18Speaker 1: story of Queen May. Thank you all for listening. Somebody
- 43:25Speaker 1: dozed off as we were recording, and I hope you
- 43:31Speaker 1: liked this episode. I was trying to keep it nice
- 43:33Speaker 1: and chill and a little bit less heavy than the
- 43:38Speaker 1: last one, especially with everything we've gone through this last week.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Now before I forget, there are still tickets for and
- 43:45Speaker 1: it was like less than ten tickets for the Glasgow
- 43:48Speaker 1: show now for my tour and Maui Mini tour in April,
- 43:53Speaker 1: so Brighton's got a good few tickets left, but like,
- 43:57Speaker 1: please buy them now, so I know that if people
- 44:00Speaker 1: want me to come to Britain, I can come back
- 44:02Speaker 1: again and do more shows in Britain. So Brighton, Manchester
- 44:09Speaker 1: and Glasgow are the ones in the UK. And I've
- 44:13Speaker 1: still got a Dublin one on the twenty fifth with
- 44:16Speaker 1: the Shite Talk History podcast Boys. So if you want
- 44:20Speaker 1: to come see me, that'd be amazing. I'd love to
- 44:21Speaker 1: see there. I might have some Marriach At this point,
- 44:25Speaker 1: I'm very excited and I'm just waiting on a delivery
- 44:29Speaker 1: coming in and then I have a giveaway coming. I'm
- 44:32Speaker 1: very excited. I was supposted it a little while ago
- 44:35Speaker 1: when I've been waiting on this stuff coming in and
- 44:38Speaker 1: I'm really excited about it. And recommendation time, I guess recommendation.
- 44:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna recommend you watch. It was a little bit
- 44:52Speaker 1: eh for a bit, but I was watching Death and
- 44:55Speaker 1: Other Details on Disney Plus. And you know me, I
- 44:59Speaker 1: like a murder mystery. I do. I can't help myself.
- 45:02Speaker 1: So check that out for lestening. If you're not listening
- 45:07Speaker 1: to me, you should be listening to some other awesome women.
- 45:15Speaker 1: And I'm gonna recommend real life ghost stories like I
- 45:21Speaker 1: love her as so much. She's brilliant and she's veriant.
- 45:24Speaker 1: It's just it's spooky, but in a fun way. But yeah,
- 45:31Speaker 1: go enjoy that. And for reading Bold, Brilliant and bad.
- 45:37Speaker 1: It's basically about Irish women in history who may not
- 45:41Speaker 1: fall within the necessary you know, patriarchal lines. You should
- 45:45Speaker 1: do that. It's amazing, it's fun. And with that, I'm
- 45:48Speaker 1: gonna bid you goodnight. Adios of Widow are my friends.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Bye bye,
