- 0:05Speaker 1: Trump is demanding that UK universities, which get funding from
- 0:10Speaker 1: the US, a similar thing has happened here in Australia.
- 0:12Speaker 1: They have to prove that they're not on the woke train,
- 0:15Speaker 1: that they don't have all this d I nonsense. So
- 0:18Speaker 1: we're talking, you know, at major British universities, who had
- 0:21Speaker 1: universities here running around like headless chucks, going oh my goodness,
- 0:25Speaker 1: we're going to have to ditch our pronouns and all
- 0:28Speaker 1: of this. But Trumps serious is reshaped. He's taking the
- 0:32Speaker 1: war on woke around the world.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Well, Rowan, with all due respect to Australian universities or
- 0:39Speaker 2: British universities, I don't know why we are supporting them.
- 0:42Speaker 3: I agree with you, American.
- 0:45Speaker 2: The American people are not crazy about supporting American universities.
- 0:49Speaker 2: The things are going so I guarantee you they're going
- 0:52Speaker 2: to be behind Trump if he wants to cut back
- 0:55Speaker 2: on the support that we're giving to foreign university reader.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Oh dear, well, yeah, this is the whole part philosophy
- 1:04Speaker 4: of doge, isn't it. Why are Americans backing this stuff?
- 1:09Speaker 4: How do you see the relationship with Elon Musk and
- 1:12Speaker 4: Donald Trump? There was a lot of conjecture in the
- 1:14Speaker 4: past week that Elon wants to exit the administration. He's
- 1:18Speaker 4: got into significant business interest that he should be focusing on.
- 1:23Speaker 4: What is his life span in the administration, because surely
- 1:26Speaker 4: you can't expect the world's richest man to continue to
- 1:28Speaker 4: work for free for the Trump administration.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Well, Elon Musk was hired as a special government employee
- 1:36Speaker 2: with I believe one hundred and thirty day tenure. Now
- 1:39Speaker 2: I suppose that could be extended or whatever, but it
- 1:43Speaker 2: was never intended that Elon was going to be a
- 1:45Speaker 2: long term employee of the federal government. And I think
- 1:48Speaker 2: he's done an enormous amount of good in a short
- 1:50Speaker 2: amount of time. Obviously, he has other interests he needs
- 1:53Speaker 2: to tend to. What I hope is that his DOGE
- 1:57Speaker 2: team remains and the DOGE work continues, because it is
- 2:01Speaker 2: vitally important. The amount of waste, the amount of outright
- 2:05Speaker 2: fraud and corruption that they are breaking to light is
- 2:08Speaker 2: just unbelievable, and that effort really needs to continue.
- 2:13Speaker 5: John.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I forgot to mention in the beginning of the show
- 2:15Speaker 1: that your pronouns President and editor of Power. Great as
- 2:20Speaker 1: always to chat to you. John Henderreika and thanks so
- 2:23Speaker 1: much for coming on and we'll speak again. So thanks
- 2:25Speaker 1: so much.
- 2:31Speaker 6: The spotlight is on President Trump's health today as he
- 2:34Speaker 6: undergoes his annual physical I have never felt better, he
- 2:38Speaker 6: wrote on Truth Social But nevertheless, these things must be done.
- 2:42Speaker 6: Trump's tariff war is surely raising his stress levels as
- 2:45Speaker 6: the Chinese retaliate big time.
- 2:47Speaker 7: Beijing is hitting back with new tariffs.
- 2:50Speaker 6: Chinese social media accounts are trolling the president with AI
- 2:54Speaker 6: generated memes depicting Trump Elon Musk and Veep jd Vance
- 2:58Speaker 6: making Nike sneakers. This means war goes this headline. The
- 3:03Speaker 6: tariff crisis is not the only mayhem at the White House.
- 3:08Speaker 6: Head Fox News Senior White House correspondent Peter Deocy was
- 3:13Speaker 6: attacked by a piget live on Fox and France. It's
- 3:19Speaker 6: not easy being a White House reporter.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Day.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I appreciated head.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Meanwhile, four new books are coming out that offer new
- 3:28Speaker 6: insight into the twenty twenty four election. Uncharted, How Trump
- 3:32Speaker 6: beat Biden, Harris and the Odds and the Wildest Campaign
- 3:35Speaker 6: in History is by Chris Whipple.
- 3:37Speaker 5: The heart of my book is the story of how
- 3:41Speaker 5: the inner circle around Biden was in a fog of
- 3:44Speaker 5: delusion and denial.
- 3:46Speaker 6: He says, even though most Americans realized Joe Biden's campaign
- 3:49Speaker 6: was over after the disastrous debate.
- 3:53Speaker 8: We finally beat Medicare.
- 3:55Speaker 6: His campaign continued to believe he could emerge victorious.
- 3:59Speaker 5: He looked like a deer in the headlights, as though
- 4:01Speaker 5: he didn't know what planet he was on, and yet
- 4:04Speaker 5: the Biden camp somehow thought that he could recover from
- 4:08Speaker 5: this run for reelection and win.
- 4:10Speaker 6: A week after the debate, Biden sat down with ABC's
- 4:13Speaker 6: George Stephanopolis for damage control. You actually contacted George about that?
- 4:18Speaker 6: What did you find out?
- 4:19Speaker 5: I did? I reached out to him and I and
- 4:21Speaker 5: I wanted to know what it was like in the room,
- 4:24Speaker 5: and he replied, heartbreaking up close.
- 4:42Speaker 9: And a worrying US Chauna tribbors in full swing. What
- 4:45Speaker 9: happens from here?
- 4:49Speaker 10: Well, this is really the biggest game in town globally.
- 4:54Speaker 10: I think Treasury beat the analysis of what the trade
- 4:58Speaker 10: remains for Australia of tariffs, and they concluded that eighty
- 5:02Speaker 10: percent of the impact will come from disruption in China.
- 5:07Speaker 10: Since that time, we've seen the US and China, the
- 5:10Speaker 10: relations have deteriorated to the point where the tariffs are
- 5:14Speaker 10: now at a point where trade is unsustainable. Donald Trump
- 5:19Speaker 10: says he's waiting for Jijingping to pick up the phone.
- 5:22Speaker 10: But there's a view in Beijing that the relations have
- 5:26Speaker 10: broken down and there will be a completely coupling. If
- 5:29Speaker 10: that happens, it will really dislocate global trade. Big impacts
- 5:35Speaker 10: for everybody, particularly Australia.
- 5:39Speaker 9: Grime. Thank youmed that four million dollars people from umployment.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Initially, I think it's terrible.
- 5:57Speaker 11: I just heard it from Laurie and I appreci and
- 6:00Speaker 11: you heard it from Elon's people, right. Elon's done a
- 6:05Speaker 11: fantastic job. Look he's sitting here and I don't care.
- 6:09Speaker 11: I don't need Elon for anything other than I happen
- 6:11Speaker 11: to like him. But I'm telling you this guy, this
- 6:14Speaker 11: guy did a fantastic job.
- 6:16Speaker 3: I don't need his car. I actually bought one.
- 6:18Speaker 11: Because and they said, oh, did you get a bargain.
- 6:21Speaker 3: No, I said, give me the top price. I've hid
- 6:23Speaker 3: a lot of money for that car. But honestly, he
- 6:26Speaker 3: makes a great car. You know what I do with it.
- 6:28Speaker 3: I let the people in the office drive around in a.
- 6:33Speaker 11: Bargo Natalie and they're all Chamberlain. They're all driving around
- 6:38Speaker 11: the most beautiful car. It's gorgeous. But I did that
- 6:43Speaker 11: as a sign of just a show of support. Numerous
- 6:46Speaker 11: people have done that, just a show of support because
- 6:49Speaker 11: you know, he's done a fantastic job, but he hasn't
- 6:54Speaker 11: been treated properly, hasn't been treated.
- 7:02Speaker 12: So for more reaction, joining me right now, we have
- 7:04Speaker 12: Michael Hardaway, former communications director to Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, and Margillespie,
- 7:09Speaker 12: former advisor to John Bayner, and Adam King Singer.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Welcome to you both.
- 7:12Speaker 13: Michael.
- 7:13Speaker 12: The administration keeps trying to spin Trump's tariff moves, but
- 7:17Speaker 12: our Americans buying it, are these new exemption seen is
- 7:20Speaker 12: giving into pressure.
- 7:22Speaker 13: No, they're trying to gaslight us into believing that he
- 7:25Speaker 13: didn't surrender in this trade war. And here's the other
- 7:28Speaker 13: thing we should think about. The war for consumers hasn't
- 7:31Speaker 13: actually started, because the war happens in people to go
- 7:34Speaker 13: to Walmart and Target and Amazon and everything they like
- 7:37Speaker 13: to buy is forty percent more. So those things really
- 7:40Speaker 13: haven't kicked in, and so that's when it begins, and
- 7:43Speaker 13: that's when the pressure rises on Republicans and Donald Trump
- 7:46Speaker 13: to do something when the prices of average goods rise.
- 7:49Speaker 13: And so, from my perspective, as we look at what's
- 7:52Speaker 13: happening here, seventy five percent of the things we buy
- 7:55Speaker 13: from Walmart come from China in some capacity. Things we
- 8:00Speaker 13: buy from Amazon or source from China in some capacity,
- 8:04Speaker 13: and so that means when those prices rise, people angrily
- 8:07Speaker 13: call their congressmen and say, get Trump on the line
- 8:10Speaker 13: and fix this. That's when the trade war starts.
- 8:13Speaker 12: I'm curious more, do you agree with what Michael's saying.
- 8:15Speaker 12: Are Republicans going to feel the squeeze?
- 8:19Speaker 7: They may come to midterms, but that's to be seen.
- 8:21Speaker 14: I think right now, the largest issue at hand is
- 8:23Speaker 14: the fact that the White House really fumbled on the
- 8:25Speaker 14: messaging aspect of this and the rollout.
- 8:27Speaker 7: It was very chaotic, very back and forth.
- 8:30Speaker 14: And one thing that the business world can't really tolerate
- 8:34Speaker 14: is the inconsistencies.
- 8:35Speaker 7: Right.
- 8:35Speaker 14: They had to plan for that, They had to plan
- 8:37Speaker 14: for volatility and to mitigate the risks there are likely
- 8:40Speaker 14: to drive up costs because they have to plan for
- 8:43Speaker 14: if these harrifs do actually go into effect. And so
- 8:46Speaker 14: I think that having some of these chaos agents the
- 8:48Speaker 14: White House. There's just too many cooks in the kitchen.
- 8:50Speaker 14: If the President's plan itself had just gone rolled out
- 8:53Speaker 14: with more diplomacy at the forefront and targeting China for
- 8:56Speaker 14: the fact that China does steal our intellectual prop right,
- 9:00Speaker 14: you talk about things on Amazon. Small businesses here in
- 9:03Speaker 14: America will create something selisling on Amazon and Chinese actors
- 9:08Speaker 14: will steal it, take it and sell it for cheaper.
- 9:09Speaker 7: We need a way to push back on that.
- 9:11Speaker 14: And so the idea about pushing back on China, about
- 9:13Speaker 14: having fair trade policies around the world, having manufacturing brought
- 9:17Speaker 14: home on certain products and things of that nature to
- 9:19Speaker 14: make more Americans buy American made products. Those are all
- 9:22Speaker 14: pretty sound objectives, right, But it was the rollout that
- 9:24Speaker 14: I think was the biggest mistake. And again it's a
- 9:27Speaker 14: matter of whether these short term pains will be able
- 9:30Speaker 14: to actually accumulate those long term gains as the President's promised,
- 9:33Speaker 14: and if Republicans can withstand that kind of pressure from
- 9:36Speaker 14: their constituents.
- 9:37Speaker 12: But you know, more you make a point, you're saying,
- 9:38Speaker 12: too many cooks in the kitchen. I want to know,
- 9:40Speaker 12: are they all making the same dish.
- 9:44Speaker 7: It doesn't seem like they are.
- 9:45Speaker 14: I mean, you have Scott Bessett, who seems to be
- 9:48Speaker 14: I guess the steady hand here, who's trying to say,
- 9:50Speaker 14: whoa wo.
- 9:50Speaker 7: Wo, let's pull this back a little bit.
- 9:52Speaker 14: But then you have Peter Navarro and Steven Miller going
- 9:56Speaker 14: out on camera and espousing different things. So I do
- 9:58Speaker 14: think as though there is is a real concern of messaging,
- 10:02Speaker 14: and the White House needs to get their ducks in
- 10:04Speaker 14: a row, and they've been inconsistent.
- 10:06Speaker 7: Even from the White House.
- 10:07Speaker 14: Pressey carry one hour saying one thing and then the
- 10:10Speaker 14: President says another. That inconsistency isn't helping their efforts. And again,
- 10:15Speaker 14: the idea around what they've tried to do is something
- 10:18Speaker 14: that most Americans would agree that we need to do
- 10:20Speaker 14: these things, but the way they went about it was
- 10:23Speaker 14: I think very chaotic and.
- 10:24Speaker 7: Potentially damaging to our relationships around the world.
- 10:27Speaker 12: Yeah, Michael, is there an off ramp? Do you see
- 10:30Speaker 12: one here?
- 10:32Speaker 13: No? I think he's got to be reasonable. Look, we
- 10:34Speaker 13: do need a global trade deal in some way that
- 10:36Speaker 13: neutralizes many of the trade issues that we have with China.
- 10:40Speaker 7: But we had one.
- 10:41Speaker 13: It was called the Transpecific partnership. It was negotiated by
- 10:44Speaker 13: President Barack Obama, and Donald Trump withdrew from that deal,
- 10:49Speaker 13: and that deal would have neutralized so many of the
- 10:51Speaker 13: trade advantages that China currently has that Donald Trump currently
- 10:55Speaker 13: complains about. And so look, the reality is that the
- 10:58Speaker 13: multi tillion dollars can oates that gave millions of dollars
- 11:02Speaker 13: to Donald Trump are exempt from many of the issues
- 11:05Speaker 13: with this trade war. The small mom and pop stores
- 11:07Speaker 13: are going to get crushed if Donald Trump doesn't turn
- 11:10Speaker 13: around and undo these taxes that he's put on us,
- 11:13Speaker 13: both from a consumer perspective as people who buy stuff
- 11:17Speaker 13: at the store, but also the small business owners on
- 11:20Speaker 13: the other side will get charged a lot more for
- 11:22Speaker 13: the goods that they source from other countries.
- 11:25Speaker 8: This is all on Trump, and this is on.
- 11:26Speaker 13: Republicans if they can't figure out a way to fix
- 11:28Speaker 13: this and fix the economy before the midterm elections.
- 11:42Speaker 15: More executive actions from President Trump. Late last night, the
- 11:46Speaker 15: President authorized the military did take control of federal lands
- 11:50Speaker 15: along the US Mexico border to bolster immigration enforcement. The
- 11:55Speaker 15: memo directs the Defense Department to use the military to
- 11:58Speaker 15: take steps to secure the board, including construction of a
- 12:02Speaker 15: border barrier. It comes as a White House is set
- 12:05Speaker 15: to begin new nuclear negotiations with Iran and workout trade
- 12:09Speaker 15: deals with dozens of countries during a ninety day pause
- 12:12Speaker 15: on tariffs. Willie James Enman is traveling with the President
- 12:16Speaker 15: in Florida. Willy, good morning.
- 12:20Speaker 16: Good morning to you, Michelle. Following a week of market turmoil,
- 12:24Speaker 16: the White House is pushing ahead with his plan for
- 12:27Speaker 16: punishing tariffs on Chinese goods with no end in sights
- 12:31Speaker 16: and with negotiations up in the air.
- 12:35Speaker 8: The White House says the President is optimistic about a
- 12:38Speaker 8: potential deal after b Jans slapped one and twenty five
- 12:42Speaker 8: percent tariffs on American exports in retaliation for a one
- 12:46Speaker 8: and forty five percent rate on Chinese goods set by
- 12:50Speaker 8: the US.
- 12:50Speaker 17: I'm very comfortable now, but I've always gotten ang well
- 12:54Speaker 17: with President Shee. We had a good relationship, very good,
- 12:58Speaker 17: and I think something positive is going to come.
- 13:00Speaker 8: The trade tingons between the US and its trading partners
- 13:03Speaker 8: sent the stock market into a spiral this week. Stocks
- 13:06Speaker 8: briefly recovered after the White House announced a pause and
- 13:10Speaker 8: retilatory tariffs, but market spiraled again after the Trump administration
- 13:15Speaker 8: clarified tariffs on some Chinese goods would be one hundred
- 13:18Speaker 8: and forty five percent. All three indexes ended the week
- 13:22Speaker 8: in the green on Friday. The uncertainty with trade hitting
- 13:27Speaker 8: main street businesses.
- 13:29Speaker 5: Hard fertilizer, fuel, herbicides, machinery all have gone up.
- 13:37Speaker 8: Some business owners who sourced their products from China worry
- 13:41Speaker 8: they may have to increase prices.
- 13:43Speaker 18: We have a merchandise line and a lot of components
- 13:46Speaker 18: of that merchandise comes from China, and so we're really
- 13:48Speaker 18: trying to figure it out. We don't want to have
- 13:50Speaker 18: to significantly increase our prices.
- 13:53Speaker 8: The White House says at least seventy five nations have
- 13:56Speaker 8: come to the table for negotiations and that fifteen of
- 13:59Speaker 8: those have already submitted offers.
- 14:02Speaker 3: We can send the turf for.
- 14:05Speaker 17: We can do it in a number of different ways,
- 14:07Speaker 17: but it seems to be appropriate and they can pay
- 14:10Speaker 17: it or negotiate it, or they can not pay it.
- 14:14Speaker 8: The progress to strike deals with other nations may not
- 14:16Speaker 8: be enough to cool nervous investors and business owners.
- 14:20Speaker 6: I think the market was overall and over sold, and
- 14:22Speaker 6: we're going to have some of these relief rallies from
- 14:24Speaker 6: time to time. But a whole bunch of uncertainty in
- 14:26Speaker 6: all the sessions in between.
- 14:30Speaker 16: Today mark's the start of what the White House is
- 14:32Speaker 16: calling direct negotiations with Iran for a new nuclear agreement,
- 14:37Speaker 16: and those conversations are taking place in Oman, with that
- 14:41Speaker 16: nation acting as the intermediary between US and Iranian officials.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Dana, all right, Willie, thank you,
