- 0:00Speaker 1: Yukhon takes on Rice the Owls on Saturday. Three thirty
- 0:05Speaker 1: is the kickoff and it's an all day party at
- 0:08Speaker 1: Renschler Field. Get there early, I get in there. We
- 0:11Speaker 1: get in there several hours early before games. I like
- 0:14Speaker 1: to walk around a little bit in the parking lots
- 0:17Speaker 1: and we've got some really great tailgators. They get there early,
- 0:20Speaker 1: so join them. This weekend. Yukon get trying to get
- 0:24Speaker 1: back on a winning track against Rice three thirties the kickoff.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Mike Christino back with Jim Mora coach. The offense running
- 0:33Speaker 1: the football these last two games hasn't been up to
- 0:37Speaker 1: the standard they set in the first five games. What's
- 0:41Speaker 1: happening there? Have you been able to get an idea
- 0:44Speaker 1: of how to improve it? Or what are you looking
- 0:46Speaker 1: at when you look at the tape of what happened
- 0:50Speaker 1: in the previous game here, most recently against wake Forest.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Well you look at you know, what we're doing first,
- 0:57Speaker 2: and are we putting our players in the right position
- 1:00Speaker 2: to make plays? We give them an opportunity to be
- 1:02Speaker 2: successful on every play. We look at how people are
- 1:06Speaker 2: trying to attack us or defend us, and then we
- 1:10Speaker 2: move on from there. You know, and uh, you know,
- 1:12Speaker 2: we have a really good offensive football staff that understands
- 1:17Speaker 2: our schemes and how to adjust well. And uh, you know,
- 1:21Speaker 2: we'll make the adjustments that are necessary to give our
- 1:24Speaker 2: players the best chance to have success. But you're right this,
- 1:28Speaker 2: you know we're not. We haven't the last two weeks
- 1:30Speaker 2: run the ball to our standard. And that doesn't mean
- 1:32Speaker 2: we're gonna we're gonna quit on it. We're gonna we're gonna,
- 1:34Speaker 2: you know, keep diving into ways we can do things better,
- 1:38Speaker 2: get you know, our playmakers the ball with a little
- 1:40Speaker 2: more space, and you know, I'm confident that as we
- 1:44Speaker 2: move forward in the season that we'll find a way
- 1:47Speaker 2: to get back to running the ball with authority. Now,
- 1:49Speaker 2: it's gonna be tough this week. I mean Rice is.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I mean, they played as tough as hell on defense
- 1:55Speaker 2: last year, and when you watch them play this year,
- 1:57Speaker 2: you see a stingy, tough, physical aggress group that's playing
- 2:01Speaker 2: with a ton of confidence. So we know it's going
- 2:04Speaker 2: to be tough sledding and we just got to dig
- 2:06Speaker 2: in and we got to do the best we can.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Hopefully we can make some plays on them, and they're
- 2:09Speaker 2: going to make some plays on us. But uh yeah,
- 2:13Speaker 2: we we just got to keep We got to we
- 2:15Speaker 2: can't be stubborn and just go well, if we just
- 2:18Speaker 2: do it a little bit better, it will work. We
- 2:20Speaker 2: have to really dive in and see why it's not
- 2:23Speaker 2: working the way that it's worked for us, you know,
- 2:25Speaker 2: the first few weeks of the season, and our coaches
- 2:27Speaker 2: have done that.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I remember watching Tom Brady and his brilliant career at
- 2:32Speaker 1: the Patriots. There are a lot of years where their
- 2:35Speaker 1: running game would do nothing and he would have to
- 2:38Speaker 1: throw the ball forty five times to set up the run.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I mean, sometimes you got to do different stuff to
- 2:44Speaker 1: get your running game going. I mean, I don't know
- 2:46Speaker 1: what you have in mind for the next few weeks,
- 2:48Speaker 1: but it's obvious when you run the football, you have
- 2:50Speaker 1: control of the game, and you Cohn's been able to
- 2:53Speaker 1: kind of ride that to these four wins so far.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Is that something that you kind of trust that Nick
- 3:00Speaker 1: Evers will kind of figure out, in other words, get
- 3:03Speaker 1: your running game going by but throwing the ball to
- 3:06Speaker 1: set it up.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Well, Nick played well yes Saturday. He played as best
- 3:11Speaker 2: he's played in the second half in particular, and I
- 3:13Speaker 2: think that gave him a lot of confidence certainly gives
- 3:16Speaker 2: us a lot of confidence. You know, your number one
- 3:18Speaker 2: job as a coaching staff, particularly on offenses, identify who
- 3:23Speaker 2: your playmakers are and get them the ball, particularly in space.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And we have a number of playmakers and we just
- 3:29Speaker 2: have to do a better job of making sure we
- 3:31Speaker 2: get them the ball in space, and that will elongate drives,
- 3:36Speaker 2: you know, that'll hopefully give us more big plays, more
- 3:38Speaker 2: one on ones, whether it's running the ball or throwing
- 3:41Speaker 2: the ball, you know, creating the matchups you want and
- 3:45Speaker 2: getting the ball to your playmakers in space. And so
- 3:47Speaker 2: we're in a constant quest to do that, and I
- 3:50Speaker 2: think it's going to look different every week, week in
- 3:52Speaker 2: and week out, depending a lot on you know, how
- 3:54Speaker 2: a team decides to play you you know, I know
- 3:57Speaker 2: this is from being a defensive coach. It's hard to
- 3:59Speaker 2: take everything away. But until we present, as you said,
- 4:03Speaker 2: the ability to do both well, you know, then teams
- 4:07Speaker 2: can kind of hang their hat on the fact that
- 4:09Speaker 2: we're just going to keep trying to run the ball
- 4:11Speaker 2: and we just have to make sure that we're doing
- 4:13Speaker 2: the right thing for our football team.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I just say a Gatherings coach had a real nice
- 4:18Speaker 1: day the other day, and I love what he said
- 4:21Speaker 1: on that final play. He said, I could have got open,
- 4:24Speaker 1: I could have shook loose to make the play. I mean,
- 4:27Speaker 1: he wasn't even complaining about the fact the guy was
- 4:29Speaker 1: draped all over him, you know, interfering with his attempt
- 4:32Speaker 1: to keep the game alive. But anyway, he looked good,
- 4:37Speaker 1: and you have a nice group of receivers, obviously with
- 4:40Speaker 1: Skyler Bell and what he did earlier in the season.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Coming off that ankle. For Skyler, where's he at? Did
- 4:46Speaker 1: you see that he was back to almost one hundred
- 4:48Speaker 1: percent or are you thinking that maybe he's improving week
- 4:51Speaker 1: to week here and he'll be even better this next week.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Physically he'll be better this week. You know. I think
- 4:57Speaker 2: you come off an injury and there's always just a
- 4:59Speaker 2: little bit hesitation as to am I going to be okay,
- 5:03Speaker 2: especially when he's, you know, a high ankle, which he
- 5:05Speaker 2: came back from very quickly. Today at practice, he looked great.
- 5:11Speaker 2: He looked really good. As a matter of fact, he
- 5:13Speaker 2: did some things that just indicated to me, man, a
- 5:17Speaker 2: kid who's trying to take it to the next level.
- 5:19Speaker 2: So I'm confident his ankle is going to be okay.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I think he'll play with a lot more certainty this
- 5:24Speaker 2: week in his ankle you mentioned it. You know, it's
- 5:27Speaker 2: nice to have a good group of receivers where you know,
- 5:29Speaker 2: if they're rolling up and taking one guy away like
- 5:31Speaker 2: they're trying to do a skylar to side and get open.
- 5:35Speaker 2: You know TJ can get open. You know chamartin get open.
- 5:39Speaker 2: We saw Brett Buckman come in and make two big
- 5:41Speaker 2: catches in the fourth quarter. You know, we got some
- 5:44Speaker 2: guys that can make some plays, and that's always a positive.
- 5:47Speaker 2: You know, you need your run game and your past
- 5:49Speaker 2: game working both effectively to be the best that you
- 5:53Speaker 2: can be on offense. You've got to be able to
- 5:55Speaker 2: do both. And we got to be able to get
- 5:57Speaker 2: that run game going. It'll help us in the past game.
- 6:00Speaker 2: If you get the pass game going, theoretically, it should
- 6:02Speaker 2: help me in the run game. But like I said,
- 6:06Speaker 2: Duke or I'm sorry, Rice is they are a stingy,
- 6:10Speaker 2: fricking group. They are impressive to watch on film.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Yeah, Josiah Gatling is fourteen catches in the last three
- 6:16Speaker 1: games Sheffield TJ. He's got fourteen catches in the last
- 6:20Speaker 1: two games so and one quick thing about your tight
- 6:23Speaker 1: I love tight ends.
- 6:24Speaker 2: You know this.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I'm always ragging on tight ends. But Lewis Hansen that
- 6:28Speaker 1: catch he made in the end zone, that was awesome.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And Evers Ck Evers just threaded the needle on that.
- 6:33Speaker 1: That was as good as it gets for a tight
- 6:36Speaker 1: end down a sideline. And I don't know what the
- 6:38Speaker 1: pattern was, but wow, that was a heck of a play.
- 6:41Speaker 2: It was. It was a really nice throw by Nick
- 6:43Speaker 2: having the trust in Louie to throw it where he did,
- 6:46Speaker 2: and Lewis being able to kind of contort his body
- 6:50Speaker 2: and get that backpad throw and make the catch and
- 6:52Speaker 2: getting the end zone. It was really beautiful. And I
- 6:54Speaker 2: was standing right there. It was great. And you know,
- 6:56Speaker 2: those are the things that both lou and Nick are
- 6:59Speaker 2: capable of doing, and uh, you know that's fun. I'm
- 7:04Speaker 2: like you, you know, I like tight ends. I think
- 7:05Speaker 2: they're they're they're mismatches there. You know, when I was
- 7:08Speaker 2: a Demons, the coordinator was always that was the guy
- 7:10Speaker 2: he always worried about, like, how are we going to
- 7:12Speaker 2: handle a big, physical, fast, athletic tight end. You know
- 7:16Speaker 2: who we get on him? You know what's the matchup?
- 7:19Speaker 2: And they can be matchup nightmare. So you know, the
- 7:21Speaker 2: more we can involve the tight ends, the you know,
- 7:24Speaker 2: the more effective will be. I think you may not
- 7:27Speaker 2: have noticed what we got don Toy. He's a true freshman.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Some snaps trying to work him in the game. He's
- 7:32Speaker 2: a big, tall, long, physical, athletic guy. So you know,
- 7:35Speaker 2: I'm I'm like you, Mike, I like I like good
- 7:38Speaker 2: tight ends.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Except when you got to tackle them, Coach, that's no fun.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Tony Gonzalez, that's the guy that always stands out to me. Athletic,
- 7:46Speaker 1: great pro I mean, fabulous personality. I always think of
- 7:51Speaker 1: him and I say to myself, that guy could pretty
- 7:54Speaker 1: much do anything on a football field.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Well, I had to try to come up with schemes
- 7:59Speaker 2: several times to cover Tony Gonzalez, and boy, he was
- 8:04Speaker 2: a tough matchup, a really tough matchup. You know, he
- 8:08Speaker 2: was all those things that you said, And I think
- 8:11Speaker 2: he's kind of the guy the type that you're looking
- 8:14Speaker 2: for if you want to look for a great tight end.
- 8:16Speaker 2: That's the body type, the athleticism, and the attitude and
- 8:21Speaker 2: character that you want.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Yeah, they're tough to find, that's for sure. Back to
- 8:25Speaker 1: more in just a moment. We continue on the Yukon
- 8:27Speaker 1: Football Coaches Show. A little later, Chamar Porter will join us.
- 8:30Speaker 1: We'll talk about Shamar a little more with coach and
- 8:32Speaker 1: also Malik Dixon Williams is with us on the show,
- 8:36Speaker 1: so stay with us on Liarfield.
