Sound Before Sight · Wilder Whispers Podcast

SPEAKER_00: Hey friend, welcome to Wilder Whispers, a space where we slow down and listen for God's voice in the ordinary moments of life.
0:15
SPEAKER_00: I'm Shay Wooden, and I'm so glad you're here.
0:18
SPEAKER_00: We often expect God to speak through big moments, a sermon, a breakthrough, a perfectly quiet prayer time, and he does.
0:26
SPEAKER_00: But so often, he chooses quieter ways, in the middle of everyday life, in the unnoticed moments, in gentle whispers that invite us closer.
0:36
SPEAKER_00: Each episode, I'll share one simple story and the quiet truth God revealed through it, not because it was extraordinary, but because he was present.
0:46
SPEAKER_00: So wherever you are right now, take a breath, let's slow down, and listen together.
0:54
SPEAKER_00: We have a saying, seeing is believing.
0:57
SPEAKER_00: And honestly, that's how most of us tend to operate.
1:01
SPEAKER_00: We want evidence.
1:02
SPEAKER_00: We want to see something with our own eyes before we're convinced that it's real.
1:07
SPEAKER_00: Show me, and I'll believe you.
1:09
SPEAKER_00: But faith doesn't always work that way.
1:12
SPEAKER_00: Hebrews 11:1 describes faith as the evidence of things not seen.
1:16
SPEAKER_00: I love that distinction.
1:18
SPEAKER_00: It doesn't say faith is evidence of things that aren't real.
1:21
SPEAKER_00: It says it's evidence of things that aren't seen.
1:25
SPEAKER_00: Because just because we can't see something doesn't mean there isn't something there.
1:29
SPEAKER_00: And sometimes we actually hear something before we ever see the evidence of it.
1:34
SPEAKER_00: That happened to me recently while I was sitting outside on my deck.
1:38
SPEAKER_00: I was reading my Bible one morning, just enjoying some quiet time with the Lord, when I suddenly heard this strange sound.
1:46
SPEAKER_00: It was loud enough to get my attention, but I had no idea what it was.
1:50
SPEAKER_00: So I stopped reading and I listened.
1:53
SPEAKER_00: There it was again.
1:55
SPEAKER_00: I looked around the yard, but I couldn't see anything that would explain what I was hearing.
2:00
SPEAKER_00: Now I was curious.
2:02
SPEAKER_00: So eventually I got up from the porch and I started looking around.
2:06
SPEAKER_00: The sound seemed to be coming from somewhere beyond the trees, and as I looked out toward the pond, I finally saw them.
2:13
SPEAKER_00: Two sandhill cranes.
2:15
SPEAKER_00: As I watched those cranes finally come into view, the Holy Spirit whispered, You heard them before you saw them.
2:21
SPEAKER_00: And immediately I thought about Elijah.
2:24
SPEAKER_00: Before he ever saw the cloud, he heard the sound of rain.
2:28
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes faith hears before sight sees.
2:33
SPEAKER_00: Now when Elijah says in 1 Kings 18 41, there is the sound of abundance of rain, it sounds like an extraordinary statement of faith.
2:43
SPEAKER_00: And it is.
2:44
SPEAKER_00: But Elijah wasn't just standing on Mount Carmel one day, looking at a cloudless sky and deciding to believe that it was going to rain.
2:52
SPEAKER_00: His faith had something to stand on.
2:54
SPEAKER_00: Because if we go back to the very beginning of the chapter, before Elijah ever heard the sound of rain, God had already spoken about the rain.
3:03
SPEAKER_00: First Kings 18 and 1 says, And it came to pass after many days that the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the earth.
3:18
SPEAKER_00: There it is, I will send rain.
3:22
SPEAKER_00: So by the time Elijah hears the sound of abundance in verse 41, he's not trying to manufacture an outcome.
3:28
SPEAKER_00: He's responding to something God has already said.
3:32
SPEAKER_00: But there's something else happening here that makes God's promise of rain even more significant.
3:37
SPEAKER_00: This drought wasn't simply a long stretch of bad weather.
3:41
SPEAKER_00: God had warned Israel about this.
3:43
SPEAKER_00: Back in Deuteronomy 11, he told his people that if they turned away from him and began serving other gods, he would shut the heavens and there would be no rain.
3:53
SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly what Israel had done.
3:56
SPEAKER_00: Under Ahab and Jezebel, the nation had turned toward Baal.
4:00
SPEAKER_00: And here's what makes that so interesting.
4:04
SPEAKER_00: Baal was worshipped as a storm god.
4:06
SPEAKER_00: He was associated with rain and fertility, the very things Israel desperately needed after years of drought.
4:14
SPEAKER_00: So think about what God was revealing through those dry years.
4:18
SPEAKER_00: Israel had turned away from Yahweh to worship a god they believed could bring rain.
4:23
SPEAKER_00: And through years of drought, Baal couldn't produce a drop.
4:28
SPEAKER_00: That's why what happens on Mount Carmel matters so much.
4:32
SPEAKER_00: The prophets of Baal spend hours calling on him.
4:36
SPEAKER_00: They cry louder, they leap around the altar, they cut themselves, they keep going.
4:42
SPEAKER_00: And Scripture gives us this devastating description.
4:46
SPEAKER_00: There was no voice, no one answered, no one paid attention.
4:52
SPEAKER_00: Then Elijah steps forward and prays to the Lord, and fire falls from heaven.
4:58
SPEAKER_00: The people fall on their faces and cry, The Lord, he is God, the Lord, he is God.
5:04
SPEAKER_00: And then the story turns toward rain.
5:07
SPEAKER_00: I don't think we should miss the order.
5:10
SPEAKER_00: Before God opens the heavens, he settles the question of who is God.
5:15
SPEAKER_00: Baal couldn't send the fire.
5:18
SPEAKER_00: Baal couldn't send the rain.
5:20
SPEAKER_00: Yahweh alone is God.
5:23
SPEAKER_00: So when Elijah eventually declares there is the sound of abundance of rain, his confidence isn't in the weather.
5:30
SPEAKER_00: It isn't even ultimately in his own ability to hear.
5:34
SPEAKER_00: His confidence is in the God who had already said, I will send rain.
5:39
SPEAKER_00: And that's where faith has to begin for us too.
5:42
SPEAKER_00: Because there's a difference between saying, This is what I desperately want God to do, and saying, This is what God has actually said.
5:51
SPEAKER_00: Faith doesn't manufacture promises and ask God to fulfill them.
5:56
SPEAKER_00: Faith responds to the God who speaks.
5:58
SPEAKER_00: And once God had spoken, Elijah's response wasn't simply to sit back and wait for the rain to come.
6:05
SPEAKER_00: He prayed.
6:07
SPEAKER_00: And this is where the story gets really interesting to me.
6:10
SPEAKER_00: Because God had already promised the rain, and Elijah had already announced that he heard abundance coming.
6:17
SPEAKER_00: So you might expect Elijah to just stand there and wait for the first drops to fall.
6:21
SPEAKER_00: But that's not what he does.
6:23
SPEAKER_00: 1 Kings 18 42 tells us that Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel, bowed down to the ground, and put his face between his knees.
6:34
SPEAKER_00: Elijah prayed.
6:35
SPEAKER_00: And that raises a question.
6:38
SPEAKER_00: Why pray for something God has already promised to do?
6:41
SPEAKER_00: If God said he was going to send the rain, wasn't the rain going to come?
6:46
SPEAKER_00: James gives us an important detail that isn't explicitly stated in the account in 1 Kings.
6:52
SPEAKER_00: James 5, 17 and 18 says, Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it didn't rain on the land for three years and six months.
7:05
SPEAKER_00: And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.
7:11
SPEAKER_00: He prayed again.
7:13
SPEAKER_00: God had promised the rain, and Elijah prayed for the rain.
7:18
SPEAKER_00: Those two truths aren't in conflict with each other.
7:21
SPEAKER_00: In fact, throughout Scripture we see that God chooses to involve his people in the accomplishment of his purposes through prayer.
7:29
SPEAKER_00: Think about something Jesus told his disciples in Matthew 9.
7:33
SPEAKER_00: Jesus looks at the multitudes and says, The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
7:40
SPEAKER_00: And then he tells them, Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
7:47
SPEAKER_00: The harvest belongs to God.
7:50
SPEAKER_00: The laborers are his to send.
7:52
SPEAKER_00: He already knows they're needed.
7:54
SPEAKER_00: And yet Jesus says, Pray.
7:58
SPEAKER_00: That's because prayer isn't about informing God of something he doesn't know or persuading him to come up with the plan.
8:04
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes prayer is how we come into agreement with what God has already revealed that he desires to do.
8:12
SPEAKER_00: God accomplishes his purposes, and amazingly, he invites us to participate with him through prayer.
8:19
SPEAKER_00: That's what we see on Carmel.
8:22
SPEAKER_00: The promise didn't make prayer unnecessary.
8:25
SPEAKER_00: The promise gave Elijah something to pray.
8:28
SPEAKER_00: And maybe that changes the way we think about the promises of God.
8:33
SPEAKER_00: What if his promise isn't just something for us to believe, but something he's inviting us to pray?
8:39
SPEAKER_00: God's promises don't give us a reason to become passive, they give our prayers confidence.
8:46
SPEAKER_00: God said rain, so Elijah prayed rain.
8:49
SPEAKER_00: But then something happened that tested that faith.
8:53
SPEAKER_00: First Kings 1843 says Elijah told his servant, go up now, look toward the sea.
9:00
SPEAKER_00: So the servant goes.
9:02
SPEAKER_00: He looks, and then he comes back with a very simple report.
9:06
SPEAKER_00: There is nothing.
9:08
SPEAKER_00: And I wonder what that moment was like.
9:11
SPEAKER_00: Because Elijah doesn't get even the smallest confirmation.
9:14
SPEAKER_00: Not a dark cloud in the distance, not a shift in the wind, not one drop of rain.
9:21
SPEAKER_00: Nothing.
9:22
SPEAKER_00: But Elijah doesn't get up.
9:24
SPEAKER_00: He doesn't abandon his posture of prayer.
9:27
SPEAKER_00: He simply tells his servant go again.
9:30
SPEAKER_00: And Scripture says he did this seven times.
9:34
SPEAKER_00: Elijah stayed there while his servant kept watching the horizon.
9:38
SPEAKER_00: Prayer and expectation were working together.
9:41
SPEAKER_00: Elijah prayed and he kept looking for the answer.
9:45
SPEAKER_00: There's something about that picture that challenges me.
9:48
SPEAKER_00: Because sometimes I pray about something, but if I'm truthful, I'm not really expecting anything to happen.
9:55
SPEAKER_00: I prayed.
9:56
SPEAKER_00: I said the words.
9:58
SPEAKER_00: But am I looking toward the sea?
10:00
SPEAKER_00: Am I praying with an expectation that God actually hears me and that he's able to respond?
10:06
SPEAKER_00: That's where faith enters prayer.
10:09
SPEAKER_00: Faith isn't pretending that something has happened when it hasn't.
10:13
SPEAKER_00: Notice that the servant doesn't come back and say, Well, I think maybe I saw something.
10:18
SPEAKER_00: He tells the truth.
10:20
SPEAKER_00: There is nothing.
10:21
SPEAKER_00: And Elijah doesn't ask him to pretend otherwise.
10:24
SPEAKER_00: He simply says go again.
10:27
SPEAKER_00: That's persistence, not pretending, not manufacturing evidence, not trying to convince ourselves that we see something that isn't there, praying and continuing to look toward God in faith.
10:41
SPEAKER_00: So maybe persistent prayer isn't about having extraordinary faith that never encounters an empty horizon.
10:47
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's faith that can hear there is nothing, and still say go again.
10:53
SPEAKER_00: And eventually the servant did go again.
10:56
SPEAKER_00: This time he came back with a different report.
10:59
SPEAKER_00: There was something on the horizon.
11:01
SPEAKER_00: It wasn't much.
11:03
SPEAKER_00: In fact, it was remarkably small.
11:06
SPEAKER_00: A cloud the size of a man's hand.
11:20
SPEAKER_00: Finally there was something to see.
11:23
SPEAKER_00: But think about the difference between what Elijah had heard and what the servant actually saw.
11:28
SPEAKER_00: Elijah had heard abundance.
11:31
SPEAKER_00: The servant saw a cloud the size of a man's hand.
11:34
SPEAKER_00: That's quite a difference.
11:36
SPEAKER_00: If you're expecting an abundance of rain, a tiny cloud doesn't look very impressive.
11:42
SPEAKER_00: It would have been easy to look at it and say, that's it?
11:45
SPEAKER_00: But Elijah doesn't dismiss what is small simply because it doesn't yet look like what he knows is coming.
11:51
SPEAKER_00: As soon as he hears about that little cloud, he tells his servant, Go up, say to Ahab, prepare your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.
12:02
SPEAKER_00: I love Elijah's response.
12:04
SPEAKER_00: One little cloud appears over the sea, and Elijah starts talking about so much rain that Ahab needs to get moving before he can't get home.
12:13
SPEAKER_00: Elijah recognized something in the small beginning.
12:17
SPEAKER_00: And I think that sometimes we miss what God is doing because we're looking for the finished thing.
12:22
SPEAKER_00: We're looking for abundance.
12:24
SPEAKER_00: So when something small appears, we dismiss it.
12:28
SPEAKER_00: But small doesn't mean insignificant.
12:31
SPEAKER_00: A beginning doesn't have to look like the finished work to actually be the beginning of it.
12:36
SPEAKER_00: And Elijah knew that little cloud wasn't the source of his confidence.
12:40
SPEAKER_00: He wasn't trusting the cloud, he was trusting God.
12:44
SPEAKER_00: The cloud was simply the first visible indication of what God had already said.
12:49
SPEAKER_00: And that's an important distinction.
12:52
SPEAKER_00: Our faith isn't in signs, our faith isn't in circumstances finally beginning to move in the direction we hoped.
12:59
SPEAKER_00: Our faith is in God.
13:01
SPEAKER_00: But faith can recognize his hand when the first evidence of his work is still very small.
13:07
SPEAKER_00: Elijah had heard abundance.
13:10
SPEAKER_00: Now he could see something no bigger than a man's hand, and that was enough for him to act.
13:15
SPEAKER_00: Because faith doesn't require the beginning to look like the fulfillment before it recognizes that something has begun.
13:23
SPEAKER_00: And very soon that little cloud wasn't little anymore.
13:28
SPEAKER_00: And then everything changes.
13:39
SPEAKER_00: That little cloud grew, the wind picked up, the sky grew dark, and then the rain came.
13:45
SPEAKER_00: Not a sprinkle, heavy rain.
13:48
SPEAKER_00: The abundance Elijah had heard was now something everyone could see.
13:53
SPEAKER_00: And I want you to notice something.
13:55
SPEAKER_00: The rain didn't become real the moment Ahab felt the first drop.
13:59
SPEAKER_00: God had spoken about this rain long before there was a cloud in the sky.
14:03
SPEAKER_00: That's what makes this entire story such a beautiful picture of faith.
14:08
SPEAKER_00: God spoke.
14:09
SPEAKER_00: Elijah heard.
14:11
SPEAKER_00: Elijah prayed, he looked, and eventually sight caught up.
14:18
SPEAKER_00: Remember how we started?
14:20
SPEAKER_00: Seeing is believing.
14:22
SPEAKER_00: But after walking through Elijah's story, Hebrews 11 1 sounds different.
14:27
SPEAKER_00: Now faith is a substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
14:32
SPEAKER_00: There was a moment when the servant stood on Mount Carmel and saw absolutely nothing over the sea.
14:38
SPEAKER_00: But what he couldn't see wasn't the measure of what was true.
14:41
SPEAKER_00: God had spoken, and faith had something to hold on to before sight had anything to confirm.
14:48
SPEAKER_00: Eventually the servant saw a cloud.
14:50
SPEAKER_00: Eventually Ahab saw the sky turn black.
14:53
SPEAKER_00: Eventually everyone felt the rain.
14:56
SPEAKER_00: But Elijah had been living by faith before any of them could see it.
15:00
SPEAKER_00: That sound before sight.
15:03
SPEAKER_00: Faith doesn't need sight to go first.
15:06
SPEAKER_00: It hears what God has spoken, responds in prayer, and trusts him with what comes next.
15:13
SPEAKER_00: Which raises a very practical question for you and me.
15:17
SPEAKER_00: What does effective faith filled prayer actually look like?
15:21
SPEAKER_00: James says the effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much, and then almost immediately he gives us Elijah.
15:30
SPEAKER_00: But before we look at Elijah praying for rain, think back to what happened earlier that same day on Mount Carmel.
15:37
SPEAKER_00: Maybe we make it more complicated than it needs to be.
15:40
SPEAKER_00: The prophets of Baal prayed for hours.
15:43
SPEAKER_00: They called on Baal from morning until noon.
15:46
SPEAKER_00: When nothing happened they cried louder.
15:48
SPEAKER_00: They leaped around the altar, they cut themselves, they kept going until the time of the evening sacrifice.
15:55
SPEAKER_00: There was plenty of effort, plenty of emotion, and plenty of words.
16:00
SPEAKER_00: And yet Scripture says there was no voice, no one answered, no one paid attention.
16:07
SPEAKER_00: Then Elijah stepped forward, and his prayer was remarkably simple.
16:12
SPEAKER_00: He prayed, Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.
16:24
SPEAKER_00: Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that you are the Lord God, and that you have turned their hearts back to you again.
16:33
SPEAKER_00: That's it.
16:35
SPEAKER_00: No shouting, no performance, no trying to work himself into the right spiritual state, just a simple prayer directed to the living God.
16:44
SPEAKER_00: And the fire fell.
16:46
SPEAKER_00: I think there's something there for us.
16:49
SPEAKER_00: Because sometimes we can start believing that effective prayer has to be difficult prayer.
16:54
SPEAKER_00: Maybe I need to pray longer.
16:56
SPEAKER_00: Maybe I need better words.
16:57
SPEAKER_00: Maybe I need to sound more spiritual.
17:00
SPEAKER_00: Maybe I need to feel more when I pray.
17:03
SPEAKER_00: Maybe if I say it enough times, God will finally hear me.
17:07
SPEAKER_00: But Jesus addressed that kind of thinking in Matthew 6, 7 and 8.
17:12
SPEAKER_00: And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
17:19
SPEAKER_00: For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask him.
17:24
SPEAKER_00: Our confidence in prayer was never supposed to rest in the number of our words.
17:28
SPEAKER_00: Our confidence rests in the one who hears them.
17:32
SPEAKER_00: And look again at Elijah's prayer.
17:34
SPEAKER_00: It was simple, but it wasn't empty.
17:37
SPEAKER_00: He knew who he was praying to.
17:39
SPEAKER_00: He was acting on what God had said.
17:42
SPEAKER_00: He wanted God to be glorified.
17:45
SPEAKER_00: He wanted the hearts of God's people turned back to him, and he believed God would hear him.
17:51
SPEAKER_00: That's effective prayer.
17:53
SPEAKER_00: Not a formula, not perfect words, not an attempt to force God's hand.
17:59
SPEAKER_00: Prayer flowing from a life surrendered to God, aligned with his word and his will, and offered in faith.
18:07
SPEAKER_00: And for us, there is something Elijah didn't yet have that we do.
18:12
SPEAKER_00: We come to the Father through Jesus.
18:14
SPEAKER_00: When we pray in Jesus' name, we're doing more than adding in Jesus' name to the end of a prayer.
18:20
SPEAKER_00: We come on the basis of who he is and what he has done, seeking what is consistent with his character and his will.
18:28
SPEAKER_00: And sometimes that prayer may be twenty minutes long.
18:32
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it may be twenty words.
18:34
SPEAKER_00: The length isn't what makes it effective.
18:37
SPEAKER_00: Faith isn't measured in word count.
18:40
SPEAKER_00: So maybe the question isn't am I praying hard enough?
18:43
SPEAKER_00: Maybe the better question is, when I pray, where is my faith resting?
18:48
SPEAKER_00: In my ability to pray or in the God who hears me?
18:53
SPEAKER_00: So maybe the invitation today is really simple.
18:56
SPEAKER_00: Just pray.
18:58
SPEAKER_00: Come to the Father through Jesus and talk to him.
19:01
SPEAKER_00: Let what he has spoken shape what you pray.
19:04
SPEAKER_00: Trust that he hears you.
19:06
SPEAKER_00: And when you don't immediately see the answer, keep coming back to him.
19:10
SPEAKER_00: Not because persistent earns an answer, but because faith keeps returning to the one it trusts.
19:17
SPEAKER_00: Just pray.
19:18
SPEAKER_00: Father, thank you that you hear us when we pray.
19:22
SPEAKER_00: Teach us to know your word so that what you have spoken shapes what we ask.
19:26
SPEAKER_00: Help us to seek your will rather than simply asking you to bless ours.
19:31
SPEAKER_00: Give us faith to believe you even before we can see what you're doing.
19:36
SPEAKER_00: And when the answer doesn't come immediately, teach us to keep praying because we trust you.
19:41
SPEAKER_00: Like Elijah, help us to hear what you have said, respond in faith, and leave the answer in your hands.
19:49
SPEAKER_00: In Jesus' name.
19:51
SPEAKER_00: Amen.
19:52
SPEAKER_00: That morning on the porch I heard the cranes before I saw them.
19:56
SPEAKER_00: For a while, all I had was a sound.
19:59
SPEAKER_00: But the sound made me look.
20:01
SPEAKER_00: And eventually my eyes caught up with what my ears had already told me.
20:06
SPEAKER_00: Something was there beyond what I could see.
20:08
SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's why Elijah's story has stayed with me.
20:11
SPEAKER_00: He heard abundance while the horizon was still empty.
20:15
SPEAKER_00: And when the first cloud finally appeared, it was small enough to overlook, but big enough for faith to recognize.
20:22
SPEAKER_00: Before long, the entire skies told the story.
20:27
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes sight simply has to catch up.
20:30
SPEAKER_00: And today's whisper to carry with you is this sometimes faith hears before sight sees.
20:37
SPEAKER_00: Thanks for spending this time with me on Wilder Whispers.
20:41
SPEAKER_00: I hope today's story reminded you that God is closer than we often realize and that he's still speaking, even in the ordinary moments of life.
20:49
SPEAKER_00: Whispers are the language of closeness.
20:51
SPEAKER_00: They invite us to lean in.
20:53
SPEAKER_00: As you go about your day, whether you're working, resting, driving, or just trying to catch your breath, stay attentive.
21:01
SPEAKER_00: God is not far away.
21:03
SPEAKER_00: He's not silent.
21:05
SPEAKER_00: He's near.
21:06
SPEAKER_00: And he's speaking.
21:07
SPEAKER_00: Until next time, keep listening.
21:10
SPEAKER_00: This is Wilder Whispers, and I'm Shaver.
