- Aleta: Hello and welcome to Besties Do Verticals with your besties, Alita and Lucy. Hi, I'm Alita. Lucy: And I'm Lucy. Aleta: So Lucy, are you feeling well rested after our little break? We were going full tilt for a while there and had to chill a bit. Lucy: ⁓ Alita. Aleta: Ha ha ha. Lucy: I want to tell you yes, ⁓ but anyone follows our social media and anything in the fandom, we all know it's been quite a week for Aleta: Ha ha ha. Lucy: everybody. For all the twinklinks and the BL actors, and there's just a going on. ⁓ So it was not very restful, but that's okay. I ⁓ I'm so grateful that we have the podcast and something really exciting to look forward to in the future Aleta: Mm. Lucy: coming up soon. But until then, ⁓ are loving what we and we are excited to continue on our recap journey. Aleta: Definitely. Lucy: Mm. How about you? How are you feeling? Aleta: I am very excited about secrets. Lucy: Secrets. Aleta: can't tell yet. ⁓ Lucy: But we'll just we'll just sit in the background and we'll just giggle and grin and I'm all over it. I feel you. Aleta: Ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha. ⁓ Lucy: So this episode we are recapping a newish girl love drama called The Summer in Between, starring Bella Moraz, Kaylee Jenkins, and Nate ⁓ W. Smith. Directed by Dylan Vox. Here is the summary from IMDB. A ⁓ shy scholarship girl enters an elite summer camp and into a dangerous love triangle with rich siblings, Chris and Kat, awakening feelings she never expected. Aleta: The summer in between opens zooming across the water towards Camp Everwild. Once again, Lucy, I did a little Google image search and ⁓ Lucy: Ha ha ha. Aleta: that opening shot is of an eco resort in British Columbia, which, you know, looked familiar. ⁓ not the specific resort, but the you the look of the place. It's the Klahoose Wilderness Lodge. ⁓ But ⁓ I think that's just stock footage because when I checked did another Google image search of the cabins. They seem to be at a Christian camp an hour and a half outside of LA. So I think they just got a a stock image to to ⁓ lead off with. We see Emily, played by Bella Miraz, arriving, and we learn that this is a camp for the rich and privileged, but that Emily is an orphan and that she is there in hopes of winning a scholarship. She is immediately attacked with water guns, ⁓ and everybody is laughing at her. It turns out she knows one person there named Mia, played by Sarah Vines, who is introduced to us as mischievous mean girl. Mia is nice to her on the surface, while rolling her eyes and gossiping about her behind her back. She is tripped up by sinister snob Sidney Kiana Nicole Smith, who steps on Emily's glasses, breaking them. Lucy: I hate that part. As someone who wears glasses, errrr. Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: That is like it's disabling somebody as far as I'm concerned. ⁓ Aleta: Yeah Yeah. Lucy: She's like, it's fine, I have contacts, but I'm like, no. ⁓ Aleta: Dealing with contacts at a summer camp every day, like mind you, though I mean they had quite a nice bathroom for a summer camp anyway. Lucy: Right. Aleta: Here comes Golden Boy Chris, played by Nate W. Smith to the rescue. Lucy: Woohoo! Nate! He is one of my favorite new vertical actors and I loved him in this. I've seen him in a few other things, but this one was special with him in it. Aleta: His night in shining armor routine has Emily crushing hard from the get go. Mia and the rest of the snobs are not happy. He takes her to her cabin, where they walk in on his half sister, Kat Callaway, played by Kaylee Jenkins, the Queen of the Camp. She's kissing another girl. Cat kicks Chris and the other girl out, and she tells Emily that she runs the camp. She's very flirty, telling Emily she can pick any bunk. Pick this one, and I'll be on top of you all summer. Lucy: Ooh. Aleta: They are in a private cabin, and she says that there are perks when you're with a callaway. You can get anything you want. And Emily quickly tells her that she's into guys. Lucy: Ha ha ha ha. Aleta: Chris interrupts to tell them that water volleyball is about to start. Emily heads to the bathroom to change, and Chris and Kat go out of the cabin where we learn that every year they have a bet on one camper. Whichever one of them gets to sleep with her first wins the bet. Lucy: Ooh, kinda cruel intentions. Yeah. Aleta: Chris suggests there ⁓ it is, yeah. even kind of ⁓ with the half si well it was step siblings in that, wasn't it? But still. Lucy: Yep. Aleta: Chris suggests betting their dad's Corvette. At the pool, Chris picks her to be on his team. Lucy: So ⁓ had noticed that people were insulting Emily about her swimsuit when she came out. I thought it was so cute. And I was I was thinking about that and I'm like, am I just old? Because was adorable. ⁓ Aleta: I guess they're determined to dislike everything about her 'cause she's the the orphan. Lucy: The orphan, new girl. Yeah, the poor girl. Aleta: Sydney is furious that Chris picks her and throws the volleyball, knocking Emily into the pool unconscious. Kat is furious with Sydney, and Chris dives in to rescue her. Lucy: I thought it was interesting how it was a camper rescuing her and giving her mouth to mouth and not an actual staff member. I guess he's a Callaway and his dad owns the camp and it was for dramatic effect, but I thought about that later, you know. Aleta: The camp counselors are not particularly useful throughout this whole thing. ⁓ Lucy: No. No. ⁓ at ⁓ Aleta: He takes her off to his cabin, where he kind of starts in insulting her, saying what he actually thinks. You're rocking the whole thrift shop hand me down, smelling a bit like foster homes and food stamps kind of a vibe. ⁓ huh. And he tells her that he knows she's only there for the scholarship. He says if she wants to roll with the rich kids, she has to be with a rich kid, like him. He leans in to kiss her and she slaps him. ⁓ We learn here that Emily has never been kissed before. Chris tries again and she runs off. Lucy: I loved the slapping part. I was like, go Emily. Aleta: she gets back to her cabin, Kat is there with no shirt on. She says she has a date with Emily. Lucy: ⁓ Aleta: tells her, Fuck the curfew, my dad owns this place. I set the rules. ⁓ Lucy: You want me to read this bit? Okay, I'm gonna read this bit. So as Kat pins Emily to the couch they have, she sa she hovers over her all like, I don't know, it's just ⁓ dominant and whoo! She says, Rule number one, you wear what I tell you to wear. Rule number two, if anybody messes with you. ⁓ Have them come to me and I'll handle it. And rule number three Hands off my brother. These hands are mine 'cause I want to help you win that scholarship. You do want it, right? Then kiss me. Aleta: Ugh Emily her kiss Kat. Kat throws her some clothes to wear and tells her that she doesn't think she knows her type, after Emily says she's into boys, not girls. Lucy: I thought this part was really hot. Kaylee is good at playing type of dominating And ⁓ her character was definitely one of my types, for Aleta: go a bonfire party with all the cool kids. Sydney attacks her, and Kat immediately shuts it down. gets a seat at the fire, a beer, and gives her his jacket. Mia is ⁓ not happy. she to be on Emily's side. She's really two faced. Lucy: Mm-hmm. Aleta: Telling her that she has a choice to make between Chris, Mr. Popular, Great A guy, straight A student, future NFL quarterback. Or Kat, the wild child, bound to be a rock star she can stay out of jail. She warns her that anything Kat Callaway can't have, she destroys. ⁓ They place spin the bottle, because of course they did. That's practically a vertical trope at this point. ⁓ Lucy: It is. Anytime they do high school, it's gotta be in there, you know. Aleta: And Emily is jealous when Kat kisses Sidney. Lucy: Mm-mm. So the spin, the bottle scene. I gotta hand it to the actors. Because yes, every time we see this in a high school vertical, which, to be honest, it is typical high school, I am impressed on how the actors push through the cringe. And I don't like to say cringe lightly, because I'm not Gen Z. I am an ⁓ elder millennial. And I don't ⁓ use that word. but ⁓ It is kinda and I still enjoy watching it, so it's okay. Aleta: Ha ha ha. Side tangent. We were talking to someone the other day who used Chuki and it made me laugh so hard. ⁓ Lucy: fuck does that mean? Is this one of your children? Aleta: No, no, it was someone that you and I were talking with. ⁓ Lucy: What the fuck? Did I just miss it? Aleta: I guess, anyway. Lucy: Okay. What does it mean? ⁓ Aleta: It's like Tacky, I guess, is the closest that I can think of. Tacky out of style Yeah. ⁓ Lucy: I must be chooggy. Aleta: Gen Z call a lot of millennial stuff that, yeah. Lucy: And then they steal our shit. ⁓ They're like, look at my ⁓ Aleta: Well, to be fair, it's Jen Alpha stealing it now. Lucy: I guess so. Yeah, my kiddo's in like she's in like balloon pants and crop tops now. I'm just like, cool. Okay, what is happening? But anyway, that's cool. Aleta: Listen, enjoy that it's still considered fashion because the stuff I wore when I well, I didn't wear, but the stuff that was really fashionable when I was a teenager is now relegated to Halloween costumes. So Lucy: I the though. do. I hey, bring shoulder pads back, I'll them. I'm old enough. Aleta: I probably still have some jackets with them. Not that I wear, but yeah. Lucy: Hell yeah. Yeah. Aleta: ⁓ dear, anyway side tangents Lucy: Ha ha ha. Aleta: When Emily spins bottle, both Callaways say that it's on them. Lucy: I really liked Nate's smile here. Hmm. Just adore ⁓ Aleta: I don't I don't adore Chris, but the counsellors show up and everyone scatters. Emily runs off, followed by Chris, and the next thing we see they're waking up in the forest together. Lucy: Emily panics a bit in this scene, and I am impressed with Bella's acting. This felt really well done. Honestly, the entire production, the quality of the acting and directing, I have been hearing a lot about Dylan Vox. He directed this. He seems to work for my drama, and I'm actually Pretty sure he directed the Rugby BL that's coming out soon, the one I'm really excited about. Yes, Love and the Ruck. ⁓ Also, he did a sci-fi one right after that with one of the leads from Love the Rock. ⁓ No, I wish. It's definitely a straight one. ⁓ but Aleta: A sci fi B L? ⁓ okay. ⁓ Lucy: I'm really into sci-fi, ⁓ so Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: ⁓ apparently my drama's never done anything like this. ⁓ But the lead actor in Love in the Rock and the Sci-Fi, his name is Arlen Yerby, Aleta: Mm. Lucy: and he's really cool. I followed him on social media, and definitely excited to see him in both. Right now, it looks like my drama ⁓ is finishing the sci-fi. It's called Echo Protocol. That one is queued up and ready to release, I think, July, but they don't have anything for Love in the Rock yet. So ⁓ Just gonna pray deeply that Aleta: we've been asking for a rugby be all for some time. ⁓ Lucy: But we're getting it and I'm so happy. And to be honest, for my drama to be the one to make it makes me really happy. Aleta: Okay. Emily makes it back to the cabin just in time before the counselors come in to make sure that everyone's where they should be. Kat tells her to take a shower. She says something like you smell like outside ⁓ and invites her to join her. ⁓ Emily tells her that she likes boys. ⁓ And Kat says, Camp is where you come to learn about yourself. And there's plenty of summer left. ⁓ It won't be long until you're mine. ⁓ Lucy: Ooh. Aleta: Meanwhile, Mia and Sydney are putting green paint in the shampoo bottle, and they steal her towel too. Lucy: I hate them, especially Mia. Definitely Too Faced, frustrating. Aleta: Yeah. Emily gets out of the shower, discovers that she's covered in green paint and that her stuff's gone, and wraps herself in the shower curtain, runs outside to find all of her clothes strewn around all over the ground. Kat tries to help her, but she rebuffs Kat and runs straight to Chris. Lucy: Well, and technically in that scene it was more dramatic. So she was in the shower and she was just slowly rubbing it all over her hair. And then like she decides to open her eyes and sees green all over her hands and panics. ⁓ Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: And then when she runs ⁓ out to like look for her towel or something, like it's gone like me Sydney took it, then she looks the mirror, and I love the like legitimate real girl scream that she lets out. Like she is Aleta: Ha ha ha. Lucy: so pissed. And then she freaks out, wraps the shower curtain around her, and then ⁓ just cause I just literally watched this, she peeks the window first and sees the like the whole fucking camp. Aleta: ⁓ yeah. Lucy: Like all of them. Like take her shit and like just strewn it everywhere. I was just like, what the fuck? ⁓ She is mad. comes out there and then what I think like The counsellors are like coming at her like what is this indecency Aleta: Yeah, you st you're streaking in camp and it's like no, she's like Lucy: or something like that? Aleta: ⁓ she Lucy: Covered in green. Aleta: wrapped herself as best she could. Lucy: Exactly. That was crazy. ⁓ Anyway, I thought of that scene because I actually really liked that Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: scene. I mean, the scene was annoying the sense that of the bullying, but Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: it was good ⁓ because Bella ⁓ gosh, what a talented young actress. I can't wait to see her do more. I ⁓ honestly like her her looks. ⁓ I I was I was watching some of her media today. I was like, I could envision her in like Stranger Things. Like her, the way that she looks, she could pull off like an 80s film. Like her and like Ben Methfin should do some like Stranger Things or something, you know? I don't know. I just I love their look. Anyway, keep going. I'm sorry. ⁓ Aleta: That's alright. Chris tells her that to survive there she can't show fear, and she has to stand up for herself. He asks her for a kiss in exchange for helping her. She says I was proud of her here, she says help her help me first. Lucy: Yep. ⁓ Aleta: He tries to help her get the green out of her hair. They kiss but are interrupted by someone calling Chris because someone puked in the cooler. And he steals her underwear, which is just Lucy: Yeah, that was that was interesting. I mean, I thought this scene was sweet at first. Like I liked how he was kind of trying to get it out of her hair, and I liked her cute little girly giggles. ⁓ Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: ⁓ don't know. I feel like is what's the word I want to use? I'm I'm I feel like I'm butcher it. Enigmatic? ⁓ Aleta: Mm. Lucy: You know, he like he just sucks you in. And and I feel that way about a lot of actors. I think in order to be a really effective actor, you want to have that kind of energy. ⁓ But I feel like he's just one of those ⁓ actors that it just comes across really easy. So ⁓ it was just so interesting. ⁓ to kinda knowing what's to come, you know what I mean? Where he's Aleta: Mm. Lucy: just like a sweetie right there and I'm like, mm-hmm. Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: Bella does pull off Innocence so well. ⁓ I just think she's really adorable. Aleta: In the next scene, they're rock climbing, and Emily sets a record. Mia tells her that everyone thinks she's in a love triangle with the Callaway siblings. Emily tells Mia that Chris is sweet and romantic, but there's just something with Kat. Too bad she's a bully. She says she has to put Kat in her place. ⁓ Lucy: Mm. Aleta: She heads over to the zip line that Kat's running and accuses her of pranking her that morning. Kat denies it, but Emily tells her that no one else could have done it. I mean lots of people could have done it, but anyway. ⁓ And that Lucy: Right? Aleta: she's not there to be her plaything. She's there to win. Winning the rock climbing competition has put her in the lead. ⁓ That night Chris and Kat meet up and he tells her that the stunt with the green paint sent Emily right into his arms. We find out that they have been doing a bet every summer for five years. Kat tells him that it wasn't her. They up the stakes. Whoever sleeps with Emily first gets the car ⁓ and the trust fund. Lucy: I love Nate's acting here. This is where you get to see the true like bait and is I guess what I would Aleta: Mm. Lucy: it. You know, he's he's pretty charming this whole time. And then I think Kat says to him, ⁓ What did she say? She said, ⁓ no, he Yeah, yeah, yeah. He said, ⁓ she's really into this nice guy routine. Aleta: Mm. Lucy: says to him, But you're not a nice or something like that. Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: And he ⁓ and he says, but she doesn't know that. ⁓ And the way that he just did Aleta: Evil. Lucy: his yeah, his little switch there. I was proud of him. I was like, look at Aleta: Mm-hmm. Lucy: you, dude. You got this. I like ⁓ I've seen so seen him in several verticals. I actually he's one of the very few straight actors I like to follow. ⁓ So when he does ⁓ do one, I tend to an effort to watch it. And he just hasn't disappointed me. You wanted to know so The first one I ever saw him in was a My Drama. And I don't and and and this is why I think I'm starting to get interested in Dylan Vox a little bit. Because it was called I swapped bodies with my enemy crush or something like that. Or swapped bodies with my crush. Like not even joking. And I really love body swaps. And so He he does. He swaps bodies with a girl and him and this actress were just phenomenal. It was a true comedy. I think you would really actually like it. ⁓ And ⁓ he was so good in it. And it was the first time I had ever seen him in anything. ⁓ And I just found out recently that was Vox Aleta: Mm. Lucy: who directed that too. So I'm starting to notice a pattern. I feel like I need to probably start seeking out more of Dylan's work because he's doing Love and the Ruck, which gives me a lot of hope that it's gonna be very good. He did the very first pirate one. So I and I've heard good things about that one. ⁓ that's Aleta: Okay. Lucy: on my drama, so I'm excited to see that. ⁓ And then he's doing the sci-fi. So I feel like that director might be my drama's guy and just and he directed this, and I'm I loved this one. thought it was really unique and fun and different. So I don't know, and he seems to work with Nate a lot. And I think that's a good combination. I think I just said like notes from that I was supposed to say from further down, but that's o ⁓ Aleta: From further down Lucy: yeah, but that's okay. Oopsie. Moving on. Aleta: Oops ⁓ Moving on, the mean pin up photos of her covered in paint, and when she tries to tear down the pictures, Sydney attacks her. ⁓ She slaps Sydney, who about to attack her back with a stapler, when Kat intervenes and says You fuck with Emily, you fuck with me and throws a smoothie her. ⁓ She takes Emily back to the cabin and tells her that she owes her a massage for saving her. As she massages Kat, Kat shares that she grew up in a trailer park. Their dad had an affair with her mom, and she didn't know that she was a Callaway until she was twelve and had a DNA test. Kat's mother was a hotel maid, ⁓ and she was an accident. Kat says she's going to help her win because she knows how much money changes a life like Emily's. Lucy: I thought Kaylee was really good here. She had her little monologue of sharing kind of her tragic past and I just I really liked the vibe from these two actresses. And I thought Kaylee was like both of them were so good at being vulnerable. And I don't know, I just I think it elevated the vertical. Aleta: The next day Chris is waiting with flowers. He tells her that Kat is trouble and just wants to get in her pants. Tell me you're still mine. ⁓ The next activity is tug of war, and Chris has a surprise. He reported Sydney for bullying and got her expelled from camp. Roger and Emily are the team captains as they are in first and second place for the scholarship. Kat and Chris are both on Emily's team, and they win. But poor Emily has rope burn, and Kat takes her off to the medical room, which she has to break into. Lucy: Ha ha. Aleta: Kat treats Emily's hand with some ⁓ ointment, and she says that her mom has chronic pain and her dad won't pay for a nurse. Lucy: This part was like just a little corny, but I think I tried to tell myself Kat was just trying to have an excuse to get Emily alone, so that's why she kinda ⁓ overly panicked and Aleta: Mm. Yeah. Lucy: you know, and I I I noticed after she runs off with her, Mia had fallen on top of Chris. And Chris is all annoyed because he's like, Where Aleta: Yeah ⁓ yeah. Get off me. Lucy: yeah, he's like, Where did they go? You know, because he's also trying to, you know. Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: Get Emily. Aleta: The one thing that I did think was funny there is she asks her w w the reason she finds out about her mom's about Kat's mom's chronic pain is she says, How where did you learn to take care of people like this? I'm like, she's just rubbing some ointment on your hand, girl. Like it's not Lucy: Ha ha ha Aleta: ⁓ it's not exactly first aid. ⁓ Lucy: Right. That's true. That's true. Aleta: Emily tells her that she knows what it's like to have no one, as both her parents died. Kat tells her, and that's why we're going to win. ⁓ Lucy: I liked their heartfelt conversation here. I thought it was really beautiful and it did actually get me emotional. Aleta: Then Kat says, I want to kiss you so bad right now. Emily she can't, and Kat tells her that she's allowed to sleep with her patients. ⁓ Lucy: ⁓ my gosh. Aleta: Emily she's sorry, she's straight. When Kat asks her if she's ever tried, Emily runs out right into Chris's arms. Lucy: I felt really bad for Emily here. She's clearly struggling. She can't understand the feelings that Kat you know, inspires in her. Aleta: Mm-hmm. Lucy: So she can't really understand what's happening to her. And and and a part of me feels bad that Kat is pushing her like she is, but obviously this doesn't start as a sweet love story, right? Like Aleta: No. Lucy: ⁓ neither of them are trying to woo Emily ⁓ for a good reason. ⁓ At the Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: beginning it's not because they like her. ⁓ So I try to keep that in the back of my mind. But you know, if Emily didn't really didn't feel something, she wouldn't be so confused. Aleta: Mm. Lucy: But this is where I'm just continuously impressed with Bella. I she emotes so well. You know, you want to know what it is. Here's what it is. To me currently, and and I think it's because I haven't seen a lot of GLs, right? Like most of what we watch, if we watch straight, so many of the straight ones, like the girls getting bullied ⁓ and she ends up in the guy's and he takes care of her. But I feel like I feel like all of the actresses who play roles ⁓ They're still doing like the same thing over and over again. And I felt like with this writing, Bella just got to fall apart. And the only other actor ⁓ I've seen do that is Evan. Aleta: Hm. Lucy: You know, everything Evan does, he just He just lets go. You know what I mean? And he goes so hard and and And I think that's what I thought of with Bella is I was like, she just went hard on everything. And and and it's not that there's not some actresses who do that, but not a lot. Not that I've seen. Like I feel like they're still reserved when they're upset. Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: You know what I mean? Like maybe they're using a tear stick. But I just felt like she was like, No, I'm pissed, I'm upset, I'm going to express those emotions. I don't know. I just Aleta: Mm. Lucy: it it sat really well with me. I'm impressed with her. As I said, probably twenty times. Aleta: Ha ha ha. Chris tells her that Kat is a player, just chasing notches on her bedpost. And doesn't care about real romance like he does. Mm-hmm. He takes her off to the swimming pool and tells her this is the first time he's brought anyone there. Do we believe that? No. ⁓ Lucy: Nope. Aleta: Just as they kiss, the camp counselors show up and they have to run. She says she won't kiss him more because they aren't even a couple. So he asks her to be his girlfriend. Emily gets so excited and agrees. He tries to convince her to come to his cabin to finish this, but she says no she's tired. Lucy: I can't believe you missed that the camp counselors basically came to Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: the pool to have an affair. ⁓ Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: So a few episodes earlier of the male counselors the only male counselor this was during the tug of scene, he shared when he was frustrated with Mia and he's like I left behind my wife and kid to be here. And then here he is several episodes later doing boom boom with his co-counselor. Like. ⁓ Come on. And you didn't talk about. Here's the other thing. You didn't talk about how he begged to have his ass slapped. I mean, Alita. ⁓ That ⁓ Aleta: Well, you know, I th I had to leave it for you, right? ⁓ Lucy: I guess so. To me that part was I can't even what he said, but I think he was like harder or like again. And I'm just like, you go, sir. That was great. ⁓ Aleta: Ha ha ha Ha ha When Emily gets back to the cabin, there's a t shirt with slut written on it in red outside on the door handle. The next day is archery, and of course Kat gets a bullseye. Emily accuses Kat of leaving the shirt. Since Sydney's gone, who else could it be? Mia, of course, but the other campers are surprised when she says that she's Chris's girlfriend. Then she attacks It's a full on girl fight, although Kat's just trying to stop Emily from attacking her. Lucy: Right, I pouted here a little bit. I was like, no, it's Mia doing it to you. Don't do this to cat. But Aleta: Ha ha. Lucy: that's kinda cool. It's okay. Have a little girl fight. Aleta: Mr. Callaway shows up and breaks up the fight. Lucy: Did you ever find the actor's name? Aleta: I did not Lucy: Okay. So I had seen him for ⁓ sure on my Instagram at one and I don't know if I followed him or not. ⁓ He is not an IMDB, so was the dad in wrestling Aleta: ⁓ he's not. Lucy: no, and he probably might be under a different name. Or you know how actors don't put verticals ⁓ in their ⁓ filmography? Aleta: Mm. Lucy: So that's probably what this is. But he was the dad in wrestling with And I swear to God, he looks well known. Like I Aleta: Mm. Lucy: swear I've seen this man in traditional film or TV. And I I cannot remember where. But I remember in Wrestling and Love when when I saw him, I ⁓ like I immediately was like, what, Leonardo DiCaprio? Or he points, you know, he's like, Aleta: Mm. Lucy: he's there. ⁓ It's him. But I I ⁓ and and I remember ⁓ maybe a month ago finding his name and I feel bad, like I Aleta: ⁓ Lucy: can't find it. And ⁓ I don't And and I Aleta: Hm. Lucy: think I looked at filmography and he apparently wasn't in many traditional film, but he must a a different stage name. I don't know. I don't believe it. Aleta: I even tried again to do a Google image search on his face and it came up with all kinds of different people who looked vaguely like that, but I couldn't find him, so I don't know. Lucy: Interesting. Well, I like your commitment. Aleta: I'm like, I have to put it in, but I couldn't. Lucy: I appreciate it. He's on Instagram for sure. I I tried to find him, Aleta: ⁓ I'm sure. Lucy: but we'll find it after this is recorded and released, of course. ⁓ So yeah. Aleta: mister Callaway says that trash like this does not belong at Camp Everwild. Kat comes to Emily's defense, but Chris just keeps quiet as their dad berates her. Just growling at Chris here. She runs out and Kat follows, but mister Callaway keeps Chris behind. He says that the scholarship was one big fiasco. The riffraff will flood the camp if they find out they're helping the poor. Chris is spineless, so when his dad says that Emily has to lose, he agrees. Back at the cabin, Emily is ready to pack up and leave. Kat says that she will do anything to make her feel good. Lucy: Mm-hmm. Aleta: Emily asks if she can make her belong. ⁓ And Kat says she has to look the part, so she dresses her up. ⁓ She tells Emily that she looks good enough eat. ⁓ Lucy: I feel like we could see during this scene that Kat is starting to realize that she's fallen for her. And we could see it on her face. And I liked it. I like that. Aleta: When they get to the games room everyone is hanging out and Roger says, ⁓ look at the poor girl stole some clothes and Kat slaps him. Lots of slapping in this one. Lucy: is, but it's not like overly dramatic vertical you know, where like whoever they slap goes down or Aleta: Mm. Yeah. Lucy: hold their cheek and they're like, ⁓ you know, like a Aleta: Mm-hmm. Lucy: gasp whatever. ⁓ It was kind of like each slap was like this tiny ass slap. that's okay. ⁓ Aleta: think it was sort of like a you know, the kind of thing that you like it's a reaction slap rather than a Lucy: They just didn't make such a big deal about it and I Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: I and I like that. Like this vertical to me, ⁓ it's n ⁓ where there were maybe like one or two cringy moments, was not campy. It was not Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: the straight until he kissed me vibe, you know, it's not the Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: good short vibe. It doesn't have sound effects, you know what I mean? Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: Like it this was more ⁓ like traditional media. ⁓ with vertical tropes, basically. Aleta: Kat says, listen up. If nobody here is stupid enough to fuck with the Queen of Camp, then you don't fuck with her either. And fake Mia is all, that's my girl. Bullying is wrong, you guys. Lucy: Ha ha ha! Hearing you do that little like mimic thing. I've never heard you do that. That was great. That was great. Aleta: I mean she didn't really say it that way, but that's how she said it in my head. Lucy: I love it. That was that was that was fantastic. ⁓ there was a part here ⁓ where Kat ⁓ Emily Aleta: Hm. Lucy: to go ahead and say it. And she says, I And that was kind of but I Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: I was like, good on you actors for making this Because I still think they it work. It cute. And then yes, I was also like, Mia, shut ⁓ up. ⁓ Aleta: Ha ha ha. Lucy: I don't know. She did a good job obviously being a mini villain. Aleta: Yeah. Do you want to read these lines back and forth? Lucy: ⁓ sure. Who do you want to be? I'll be cat. Aleta: ⁓ okay. ⁓ They're playing foosball and having fun when Kat says Lucy: You know, it could be like this all the time, but Aleta: Like what? Like if we dated? Does that mean I'm gay? Lucy: Or by fluid, curious, I don't know. It's a spectrum. No one's asking you to pick teams. Just explore your options. Especially if there's a spark with some girl here. Aleta: There might be with one. Lucy: Ooh. Aleta: Ew. ⁓ Chris shows up and tells Kat to get away from his girlfriend. He's brought her flowers. Emily asks him what he's doing there, and thank goodness she tells him off for not speaking up when his dad was saying horrible things to her. Kat chimes in. What a bad boyfriend. Lucy: Ha ha ha ha ha. Aleta: Chris claims that when he talked privately with his dad, his dad apologized. Lies. He says, She looks incredible and Kat says, She looks like me. ⁓ Lucy: Mm. Aleta: And ⁓ Emily says, that's kind of fucked up. ⁓ Lucy: ⁓ Loved it. Aleta: He asks Emily to go out with him and Kat says she can't. She has a date with her. Chris says She's his girlfriend and tries to pull her away. Kat says, ⁓ make the right choice. Emily tells Chris that they're over. Emily and Kat run back to the cabin. They start to make out, undress, and Kat is heading when she stops. ⁓ I think I like you. She says she's never felt that way. Kat feeling really guilty and she's upset. Lucy: This part tugged at my heartstrings. I think it was a really beautiful scene. Aleta: Kat says, I'm scared that you're going to look back on this time and think it was a mistake. I'm scared that you're going to hate me with your whole heart once you know who I am. Mm. ⁓ Lucy: Mm. Aleta: She runs off to call off the bet with Chris. Chris says, You caught feelings for a townie? I've never seen this side of you. It's gross. She offers to let him have the trust fund and the car. Just let me take care of her. Chris refuses and shows her he's truly his father's son, as he says, If I can't win her, then I'm going to destroy you both. Lucy: the only time I've seen my boy Nate is a villain. Here's the thing, he's good at it. think he Aleta: Ha ha. Lucy: so good at switching from sweet Alabama pie to ass. honestly, it just made me admire him more. He usually I think I said earlier, he usually plays ⁓ the good guys. And you know Aleta: Mm. Lucy: else can do this? ⁓ So Andre Prunella, I remember being shocked. He did my serial killer lover with Adam Santa Cruz. He did a really creepy ass switch too, from innocent to psycho. ⁓ Aleta: Mm. Lucy: And honestly, I wait to recap that one. That one is really good. ⁓ not gonna say Evan, I've already said Evan. ⁓ Let go. ⁓ All right. Aleta: loves Evan. ⁓ Lucy: Fuck yeah I do. Aleta: At breakfast the next morning, Mia asks Emily to spill the tea about Kat. As she's doing so, Kat and Chris come in and start arguing over her again. Mia says that there are tons of single girls at camp for Chris. He says, I'm sorry, what's your name again? Emily tells Chris that it would be better if they stayed friends. Chris says, Well, if we're going to be friends, did Kat tell you about the bet? Kat tells him to back off and he says I don't think so. And Kat throws some mashed potatoes I think it's supposed to be at him. The texture looked off, but then he retaliates with squash and it's a food fight Lucy: Bye. Aleta: The counsellors try to stop it and get food to the face. ⁓ Chris claims that Emily is the one who started it, ⁓ and the counsellor docks half her points. One more strike and she's Emily asks them about the bet, and Chris tells her, Kat doesn't actually like you, and neither do I. But whichever one of us fucks you first wins the bet. Lucy: Mm. ⁓ Aleta: Mm mm. Emily is naturally furious. She asks what Kat would get if she sleeps with her. Kat tells her and then says that she cares for her, that she never caught feelings in any of the other years. Lucy: Yeah, this was rough. Emily is probably more furious than ever because she always thought she was straight. Aleta: Mm-hmm. Lucy: And then now ⁓ basically turned her world upside down. She falls for a girl, and she's sitting here happy, but trying to understand her sexuality, and then only to find out the girl that she's caring about potentially did this to her. I mean Aleta: Mm. ⁓ Lucy: Not even potentially, she did do this to her. Aleta: Yeah. Emily wants to know how many other girls, and Kat admits that she has never won. Emily asks who Chris fucked last year, and Kat tells her that it was Mia. Why do you think she's been bullying you all summer? Mia and Sydney are best friends who have been working together. Kat tells Emily that she's falling for her, but unsurprisingly Emily doesn't believe her. Emily goes to talk to Chris and walks in on him and Mia. Mia looks smug and says she got her man back. The man who was like, What's your name? Yeah. ⁓ Lucy: Right. Aleta: Girl, why would you want him? Anyway. ⁓ Lucy: Right. Aleta: She runs out and Chris tells Mia it would only take one fight for Emily to be expelled. So she finds Emily in the bathroom slaps her. So many slaps. ⁓ Lucy: Right? I gotta take all those out. ⁓ taking all the rights out. This is how you know I'm tired. ⁓ Aleta: It's funny. Lucy: Alright, we'll just leave him. Aleta: start but Kat comes in and stops it. Meanwhile, Chris tells the counsellors that Emily started another fight. Lucy: Diabolical diabolical look on Chris's face as he leans back with this smug look Aleta: Yeah. Lucy: as Emily gets dragged out. ⁓ Aleta: Chris tells his dad that he did it. The towny is expelled, and word will spread. mister Callaway says that Chris is far better equipped to take over the family empire than his pain in the ass sister. Some day all this is gonna be yours. The next morning Emily is packed and ready to leave, but Kat intercepts her. They break into the office to find the security footage prove that Mia is a bully and started the fight. And Kat also shows her the video of her trying to break off the bet. They present the counselors with proof of the affair at pool, ⁓ which results in them not expelling Emily. Lucy: So Alita, don't you think Counselor Dan is hot? Aleta: I I mean I don't Lucy: Serious? Okay, I thought he was really hot here. I I think here's what I realized looking at I was like, you are probably one of the most age-appropriate men ⁓ that I have like seen on the verticals where it felt completely okay to be like, huh. And I I do have a thing for blondes, Aleta: Mm. Lucy: and I blondes with long hair. Male blondes. I like all blondes with long hair. What am I talking about? Aleta: Ha ha ha ha. Lucy: I I don't discriminate. Anyway, he's more age for us, okay? ⁓ Aleta: I don't know. I don't think he's any older than a lot of the other actors, but Lucy: I think he's gotta be in his thirties. Yeah. Aleta: Lo lots of the other actors are in their thirties too. Uh-huh. Not for me. Lucy: I know, they're a little more age appropriate, sort of. Uh-huh. I don't even know anymore. I'm just like, what's happening? Aleta: This is gonna be such a c disaster, this whole code. Lucy: It's okay. It's all good. Aleta: The final challenge is paintball three legged derby. Lucy: Emily has a grand entrance as she comes back in and shocks all the camp people. ⁓ Aleta: Ha ha ha. The first team to collect three flags and bring them to the counselors without getting shot wins. Emily, Mia, and Roger are the top scorers. Chris says he's going to make sure that Mia wins. Because you like me? ⁓ Lucy: Ha ha ha ha ha. Aleta: because Emily has to lose at all costs. If I win, I'll take you to Ibisa. The battle is on, and Mia and Chris are playing dirty, stealing flags and pushing people out of the way. Lucy: Some harsh language here from Chris to me. I won't repeat it. But I was like, damn, bro. Aleta: Chris is a jerk. Lucy: Damn. He's a big jerk. Aleta: But Kat pulls off her red underwear and ties it up like a flag. Chris and Mia are first back, and when Kat and Emily arrive, he says, Enjoy your student debt loser. The counselor asks for their flags and Chris presents them. The third one is the panties. So the real winner is Emily. Woo! Chris is furious and is about to shoot Emily with a paintball gun when his dad intervenes. Lovely moment here as Emily slaps him. And says, You look like a sore loser, Chris, and losers don't belong at Camp Everwild. Mr. Callaway says she's right. Chris brought shame to the Callaway name. He says maybe Kat deserves the camp after all. Back at their cabin, and Kat has filled it with flowers and twinkle lights. A little bit of spiciness ensues, but we don't see any of it. ⁓ Then they are cuddling afterwards, and Emily says, I better see you next summer. Kat says, and all the weeks in between. And the vertical ends on a kiss. ⁓ Lucy: Aww Aleta: Yay. Lucy: ⁓ is one of favorite GL verticals right now. ⁓ I loved the the concept, the actors they chose. I loved the way it was directed, the way it flowed, the comedy, and the intention behind this one. ⁓ I it was brilliant having a bisexual storyline and having the main female character end up with the beautiful blonde lesbian instead of the all-American jock. All of this was very appreciated by me because it felt different. You know, granted, I haven't seen all of the GLs out yet, but as of now, it's the top. I wanted to say good job to Bella, Kaylee, and Nate. All of you had really good chemistry. Like I feel like Nate and Kaylee had great rivalry chemistry. And I feel like Nate made it believable with Bella. And Bella made it believable with Kaylee. I just I really liked that. So I can tell that everyone worked hard on this. The we talked about this earlier, but yes, Dylan Box seems to have a lot of really intriguing ones that are currently out. ⁓ The only sad part I kind of felt on this one is that it was still fairly young adult. Granted, it's about older high school students or college kids anyway. I don't know though. seems directors, at least from what I've seen, it feels like they are currently ⁓ afraid of Girl Love Spice or they're not ⁓ sure how to execute it. I I'm not sure. ⁓ It could just be the writing. It could be that the apps aren't ready for that yet. And and I guess when we think of the history of the BLs, right? They all started out very vanilla. And then they started getting spicy pretty quickly after heated rivalry. Aleta: Mm-hmm. Lucy: I do hope they can get there eventually ⁓ and start the fade to black. Okay, and I know how this sounds. ⁓ Aleta: Ha ha ha Lucy: I'm not trying to be like a total horndog here. I'm not all the time, Aleta: ⁓ Lucy: but I just I want I want the girl loves to get the same courtesy as the boy loves, okay? I want to see girl love spice too. Aleta: I yeah, I get that. It's shame that they don't seem to be willing to take the same chances as the BLs are. But yeah, as you said, the are high school kids. I do wish ⁓ with ⁓ the boy loves and girl loves that we have seen that they would have more ⁓ storylines about adults, ⁓ personally, instead of always being high schoolers. Lucy: Yes. Aleta: But I did enjoy this one. I think all of the actors did a great job, as you said, and as much as I don't like bullying in any of them, it wasn't quite as severe as it can be in verticals. I really dislike the dad. I don't ever like the parents. Lucy: Yeah. Aleta: ⁓ But I guess ⁓ kind of did the right thing the end. ⁓ So that was the summer in between. Besties, go forth and watch more queer verticals. We are getting a bunch of new ones coming out soon. And hope you'll join us again next time. Bye besties. Lucy: Bye besties.
