- 0:41With a blunt penknife the Doctor Who commentary podcasts in
- 0:44nothing to madly crave. This time.
- 0:47No sigh. I'm gonna Shatter your Illusions
- 0:53right now. Oh, do something, unexpected.
- 0:58What what are you gonna do? I have a question for you.
- 1:04What? Yes, messing with the formula.
- 1:07What's going on? I'm going to turn this into the
- 1:09dock to equivalent of Mastermind, right?
- 1:12Okay, my question is this, Where do you think the macra ranked
- 1:19amongst the giant monsters of Doctor?
- 1:23Who now I'm including Kroll. The Scaris an the giant spiders
- 1:28are meta Pelias free, the giant maggots, all of them we're
- 1:33doing. Wow.
- 1:37In terms of a problem, I love Chrome.
- 1:39Do you know what? I really loved roll.
- 1:41I love the way that his tentacles just appear over the
- 1:44split-screen ago, to loves trying a giant monster, doesn't
- 1:56it? I think maybe the giant spiders
- 1:59are the most. Well, realized of them in like
- 2:07this. Something about the spiders with
- 2:08their female voices and things like that, that I think work and
- 2:12that image of the spider on the back is a really great Doctor
- 2:16Who We image the giant. Maggots are really well done as
- 2:20well but they don't do much other than hiss and and jump up
- 2:25a bit. So and this is the problem when
- 2:27you've got a giant creature that they do much the macro don't
- 2:30talk so you don't have any idea of what they're like as a
- 2:34species they're just all just that one person.
- 2:37He's got. Who is that talking then?
- 2:41Well, I'm guessing that's the the macra but it's again really
- 2:47explain. You don't really have a dialogue
- 2:49that person. Oh and it's not like anyone has
- 2:52a dialogue with the macro to find out what their evil plans
- 2:55are is just it just happened so fast.
- 3:00They're just a giant monster to scare the children more than
- 3:04anything. I think is that enough?
- 3:08Sometimes that is just enough and like I think it's only
- 3:14because Doctor Who fans and go back and watch these a million
- 3:16times that you actually even start asking these questions.
- 3:19Yeah, if this was 1967 that's just the monster of the week and
- 3:23this week is a giant crab and that's amazing.
- 3:26And then this week it's monsters with no faces and that's amazing
- 3:29as the new series done. Join creatures beyond the
- 3:34arachnids and on the macra, Oh, and the macro, yes, I can't
- 3:41think. I'm not sure they.
- 3:45My, I'm just honest, I haven't done anything along the lines of
- 3:48planet of giants because they could pull that do that.
- 3:51So, well now could really. Yeah, I can't think that they
- 3:56have just the spiders in our actors, in the UK and the ones
- 3:59in Kill the Moon. Yeah, and the giant time.
- 4:04Beetle that sits on Donna's back.
- 4:06Oh yeah that was terrible when it is red for.
- 4:08Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:12Considering how well the spider look.
- 4:14How good the spider looked on on this layden's back compared to
- 4:18that all those years later you can talk something about that
- 4:22big, isn't it? Whether spider leaps on her back
- 4:26and it kind of jotters and she jumps?
- 4:30Yes. That it comes to the direction,
- 4:33doesn't it? Does.
- 4:35I don't think you get that with with Donna.
- 4:37You don't see that that bit. So I mean I think her
- 4:41performance when she's in that Circle of mirrors.
- 4:44Is she renders? Yeah you rely on.
- 4:49She goes to show you though. She's yes vicious.
- 4:52Whereas here I think we're left with Anika Wills trying to sell
- 4:56the fact that this giant taxi cab of a monster.
- 5:01Is is, yeah, because the problem with it is, it's big, but it's
- 5:06also immovable. So it doesn't move very well
- 5:10from what we can tell from from the bits that exists.
- 5:13So that doesn't help. I think that the director was
- 5:18quite smart in that he uses the Shadows.
- 5:21Quite a lot. Yes, shadows and dry ice to
- 5:24hide. Height B boys.
- 5:27Much better. A very lumbering.
- 5:30Someone should have given the note to the director of the
- 5:32protons and told him the same thing.
- 5:35Yes, mmm directions Point. Yeah, it's like the mechanoids
- 5:41that the studios are so small that you can't get a monster.
- 5:45This big into the studio, very easily and do anything with it.
- 5:50I think the mechanoids, amazing know what a piece.
- 5:52They look brilliant. Yeah, but though I'm only, it's
- 5:55The B on film at the end in the big fight that look.
- 5:59Look best on a complete side note.
- 6:02I promise you people we will be going into marketer episode 4 in
- 6:05the second although they're so little happening in episode 4
- 6:08this might be the most interesting thing.
- 6:09You hear all commentary. Have you ever watched those
- 6:13Terry Nation Army documentaries on more?
- 6:15Yeah, those are brilliant. I love those.
- 6:18I watch one on the mechanoids. I would like the the level
- 6:20detail. Yeah, it's a research.
- 6:24That's what doctor who finds do. They, if you'd like John to
- 6:28something that's yours, you go into it in detail in the fact
- 6:31that they can identify, which garlic is relations my by where
- 6:36there's a bolt that's sticking out somewhere on all the cases
- 6:41or a scratch on on the paintwork.
- 6:44There was one right where they managed to trace a Dalek from
- 6:47the chase all the way through its appearances until
- 6:51remembrance of the Daleks that's that's amazing.
- 6:54I'd love that kind of thing but some people say that's a waste
- 6:57of a life. But if it's not no no, that's
- 6:59just adding to the sum total of human knowledge and that's what
- 7:03we want. And that's what Dr. Who fans do
- 7:05they love piecing together. All the like we said before, all
- 7:09the bits of the puzzle. So you might focus on a
- 7:12particular bit that you're really interested in like why
- 7:17Jon pertwee's got this particular jacket on in this
- 7:19story or was Graham Williams choosing, Which jacket the
- 7:23doctor War for which Tori and things like that.
- 7:26You see another series or another franchise that is as
- 7:30well documented and as well, kind of reviews as dr.
- 7:34Hey, I don't think anywhere any other series gets anything like
- 7:40this. Compared to Star Trek there's so
- 7:44much that I don't know about Star Trek.
- 7:47I don't know how they made the 60s show.
- 7:50I don't know how The decision-making went on in the
- 7:55in the 90s and things like that. I'm sure this is something you
- 7:59and Nathan talked about, ya know, there is information out
- 8:02there. There's some books out there but
- 8:05not the wealth of knowledge that there is no.
- 8:08So who was documented? Yeah, so but I could tell you,
- 8:12this was recorded at Riverside Studios.
- 8:15This was directed by John Davis, John Davis, directed many things
- 8:20for the BBC and ITV. Pizza Jeffrey was in all the ICC
- 8:25shows of the 60s and all of that because you find that out as a
- 8:30decimal reason why you and I can do a commentary on this story
- 8:34and it ain't just watching the story is though because we have
- 8:39information that's around because we've both grown up with
- 8:44that being discovered so we've been on that Journey with all
- 8:47the people making the discoveries II.
- 8:49Think when I started reading Doctor Who magazine it, Was
- 8:53issue 44, which was the very first monthly issue.
- 8:56So that was the very start of longer articles about the making
- 9:01of Doctor Who for the first time.
- 9:03So you get these little hints sort of behind the scenes of
- 9:06season 18 and things like that. And so always say Doctor Who
- 9:12magazine grew up with me because I really did because I've
- 9:15started at age five and and onwards and seeing it through
- 9:20all the sort of various ways that it's found out more about
- 9:23the show and if it, they used to be, they used to do the Doctor
- 9:27Who archives in the early days where you just get the synopsis
- 9:30of the story and then it moved to a synopsis of the story with
- 9:33one page, on the making of the story one page.
- 9:37And then suddenly you moved to these huge features that A tiny
- 9:41synopsis where pages and pages of how they actually did did it
- 9:46and they then got access to the people with the
- 9:50behind-the-scenes paperwork. So suddenly you've got this
- 9:52extra level of information and then you've interviewed all the
- 9:55people involved in incredible detail.
- 9:58So you've got that extra extra bit so you find out all these
- 10:02things sort of over the years and piece it together and that's
- 10:06why like I was listening to an interview on Galactic yo-yo.
- 10:09The other day of One of these people that's doing like the
- 10:12reactions videos to Classics Doctor Who and she was able to
- 10:17watch like on brick box, the entirety of Doctor Who like
- 10:22binge watching, you know, and record these videos.
- 10:25But it was kind of disposable information that that went in
- 10:29and they went out, she did a video and then moved on and I
- 10:34think because of how fandom of our age discovered, a lot of
- 10:40this. Reg the house time is Walker's,
- 10:43books. Read the target, novels listen
- 10:46to the soundtracks, discovered, the Telly, snaps all of this.
- 10:50We've got this knowledge ingrained in our heads.
- 10:54Yeah that we can talk about Doctor Who for two hours and
- 10:59then we'll talk about what's on the screen.
- 11:01Yeah and a bit young people today they have no idea but I do
- 11:09think I do think there is Something more substantive, and
- 11:13I'm not saying it's a less worthwhile experience just
- 11:17bingeing here, but there's something more substantive about
- 11:21discovering it, piecemeal, putting it all together.
- 11:25You know, as a kind of library of information in your head
- 11:30rather than just treating it as something disposable that you
- 11:33can just sort of watch one thing after another, you know.
- 11:37Yeah. And yeah, putting together the
- 11:40story of dr. Who has been the Journey of my
- 11:43life more than anything else? I'm really kind of the joy of
- 11:48hamster, is it's been finding all these like-minded people
- 11:51that have done the same thing because you need to have this
- 11:54knowledge to do this. Yeah.
- 11:56Yeah, because you can't talk about a story just by, well, you
- 12:00can just do it by what's on screen, but having that extra
- 12:04background, knowledge makes It an extra special, listen because
- 12:10and again, because I think, because every person who does
- 12:14one of these is coming at it with slightly, different
- 12:18knowledge and slightly different levels, of might learn a ton of
- 12:22stuff. Yeah, I have from listening to
- 12:24being and I've learned things that I've forgotten same breath.
- 12:27You get all the personal stories as well and what certain stories
- 12:31performances? Yes.
- 12:32Actors that people have met and that adds even more.
- 12:37More context. So yeah, exactly.
- 12:39Because we yeah, we've all experienced Doctor Who in the
- 12:43same way, but differently, if you see what I mean, it's we've
- 12:47all Sort of piece together. The story of Doctor Who in a
- 12:53through the target books through the VHS is through the DVDs,
- 12:57through the documentaries through reading dwm, but not
- 13:00everyone has done it. The same not everyone has done.
- 13:04All those steps in a particular order.
- 13:07So, so, some people are now coming back to the target books,
- 13:11where they hadn't read them as a child and having that experience
- 13:13of that. But for me, that was the big way
- 13:17of finding out What those of the stories were and piecing
- 13:21together the plots and and things like that half the Joy
- 13:24about having like repeat guests back because, you know, like
- 13:26I've got a library of repeat guests now on this thing is
- 13:32unlocking each person's personal Journey.
- 13:35You know. Not.
- 13:36Yes, no worries. But actually, how did you
- 13:38discover this show? Is it part of your life as a
- 13:41whole, what stories means? Something to you, you know, and
- 13:45it's not that everyone is talking about, always the Or
- 13:48he's that mean something to them, but they're always stories
- 13:51that they've got something our connection to that.
- 13:54They want to talk about a tale of Youth.
- 13:56You might start exactly. Well, okay, now we're being a
- 14:01little bit self-indulgent now, I'll guess.
- 14:03Wow, that was super interesting because that's the other Joy of
- 14:06this is that you go up from these Matt engines where you
- 14:10actually end up saying something, vaguely, profound,
- 14:13you know. Yes.
- 14:15All you watch the Aztecs and we do fuck all.
- 14:20Mexico people from Peru, don't know, that's the one, one day
- 14:24people will hear that and they'll understand.
- 14:26Let's let's all let's watch episode 4 of the crab people of
- 14:31unnamed Planet. Okay, I'm there count.
- 14:36Is it okay, in five, four, three, two, one, go Joey blood,
- 14:44irritates me that brick Spock's puts season, 4 episode 30.
- 14:50It's the macra to report ball. I'll see you.
- 14:54There you go. You dig a bit of detail right?
- 14:56Well done. Mmm.
- 14:59So I what's your just that nothing to match, whatever.
- 15:02What is your? I was born story.
- 15:06I am the closest episode that was broadcast to where I was
- 15:10born, is the terror of the zygons part 10.
- 15:13What I think I'm sort of in the season gap between revenge of
- 15:17the Cybermen and Terror of the zygons, but I'm actually a bit
- 15:20closer to tear of the Zionist state are like, on.
- 15:22Sure. Yeah.
- 15:24I'm wedged firmly between so deed and Pongal.
- 15:29That doesn't surprise me at school and I'll tell you now.
- 15:34So did was a lot more fun. Just wanted to take control the
- 15:39time. Honestly, like he did have an
- 15:42entire Army. Sorry.
- 15:45Back to the macro Sarah. Look at look, I mean, okay,
- 15:49they've made the mackerel, look, genuinely terrifying there.
- 15:52Let us And again, you get, this is a nice shot with the people
- 15:59moving in the, in the windows, that wasn't the original would
- 16:04it? No, but that's, that's just
- 16:07nicely done. So essentially, now this has
- 16:12become this episode is going to be calm resting control back
- 16:16from Ben who's already kind of us.
- 16:18Yeah, but also diverting the gas away from the macra, So they
- 16:24yell and exposing the macra to the people of the colony or at
- 16:28least the control, the pilot, always get the pilot and the
- 16:31controller mixed up, who's looking over the controller's,
- 16:35the fellow on the screen and he, that's right.
- 16:36Yeah. And the pilot is Peter, Jeffrey.
- 16:38Do we know who that actor is? I'm?
- 16:41Well, the I don't know who the, the picture is of, but the older
- 16:46man is, I'm Graham Lehman who does lots of Doctor Who's and he
- 16:50always does sitting down parts. And what else has he done?
- 16:53Is in Fury from the deep. Okay, he is one of the elderly
- 17:00time Lords in the three doctors. Okay.
- 17:05So he's the one sat down at the control panel in the three.
- 17:08Doctors told do this role as long as I'm sitting down.
- 17:11Yes. Fair enough.
- 17:12I don't know whether he was, was a disabled actor or what he may,
- 17:16well have been, but he always had sitting down roles Yeah, we
- 17:21got that. The doctor being 30th yet
- 17:24turning wheels and causing Mischief.
- 17:26Mmm, This is a great outing for trial and they really is.
- 17:33I know, I said that over and over again, it gets loads to do
- 17:37and Oh, look at this. Here is that after all three
- 17:41times four is, he does a. Some doesn't he?
- 17:43Yes, confuse him. And that's what he does.
- 17:48Does really well of. He's very good at sort of
- 17:51baffling people, and appearing, to be silly and stupid, but
- 17:55underneath, he's absolutely hugely intelligent hugely in
- 18:02charge. I love the scenes in the seeds
- 18:05of death where he's like doing his comedy running around the Is
- 18:10Alex. There are a lot of our but at
- 18:12the end it's like oh I've just tipped your Fleet into the some
- 18:16yes bro. But people don't really talk
- 18:22about his darker side. Do that he's silly.
- 18:25No, because he's all what it's like Hartnell being classified
- 18:28as the grumpy cantankerous doctor troughton's.
- 18:33The comedic funny one, but actually he's, he's very
- 18:37Sinister. I mean you watch him in the
- 18:39Moonbase doing that speech about.
- 18:40I'm there are some corners of the universe.
- 18:44And he says he says there, they must be fought to the death and
- 18:48it's funny. They when that was quoted sort
- 18:52of through the 80s and 90s, they always missed off the last bit
- 18:55of that. And it was always they must be
- 18:56fought but I never included the to the death bit and his doctor
- 19:02really lives by that because he's killing everyone on is an
- 19:06you mentioned hard, all their being grumpy and yet my memory
- 19:10of heart. No, it's just B's, giggling
- 19:12Charming like Hey, he's you know, I must have fallen asleep.
- 19:18I'm so sorry we must never let this happen again.
- 19:23What you're insinuating? I thought I can't look after
- 19:25myself. Yeah, exactly.
- 19:27It's very, very interesting. Very interesting.
- 19:31Can't possibly blame me for all this.
- 19:34My fault. I'm fulfilling around.
- 19:38Hey, mister, what can you do this?
- 19:42People keep giving me guns and I do wish.
- 19:44They wouldn't. He's actually he's not he has
- 19:48moments of that, but his characterization is far more
- 19:51detailed than it was a and this is what we did.
- 19:55As young fans, you pick on one characteristic and that's that
- 19:59doctor? Yes.
- 20:02Yeah. Where is she?
- 20:04As I've gotten older, I started to realize just how passive
- 20:08aggressive Pete Davidson's doctor can be.
- 20:10Oh yeah. Oh absolutely.
- 20:11And he's got a wicked line in very, very dark humor.
- 20:15As well, was it? I've only just put it out.
- 20:17Well, jolly good. Now you can take it down again,
- 20:19down again. Well, that bit in the visitation
- 20:22where she says I worked though might have left a forwarding
- 20:25address and he goes, will you like real Island, you know?
- 20:30Yeah. I think what we're saying is
- 20:33that, there's a lot more nuanced in these performances than a
- 20:36one-line thing. And exactly.
- 20:38Yeah. Yes to is a cosmic funny hobo.
- 20:43No, he's not. And he's not to either.
- 20:46So that's not his great assassinator of the universe.
- 20:49Yes, Does he kill anyone in the space pirates?
- 20:55I don't know, I never remember what no one knows.
- 20:58No one cares. Well I'm not yeah.
- 21:01I actually once you get past part to the space pirates is
- 21:05perfectly fine. Those first two episodes are
- 21:07very dragged out but actually the best of it moves along
- 21:10fairly quickly and fairly well, sigh.
- 21:13We are going to be too late again.
- 21:17What's that Ian? This is V 41.
- 21:24He's so funny. I've noticed we're not talking
- 21:27about the makris error again. We're not because they're just
- 21:30walking around tunnels in the dark.
- 21:33Yeah, they really. It really has leveled out to be
- 21:37very traditional now, has less it has from, from a really
- 21:41interesting and different beginning.
- 21:44My you said sir that subversive. Yes, it's playing with stuff.
- 21:48The show doesn't normally there is a very funny scene on it.
- 21:51Is actually in the real. Story of a shop for a window of
- 21:55all the crabs Atkins. Yes, I love that.
- 22:00And I think once got a microphone, that's the one
- 22:02that's true. They'll never suspect.
- 22:06It sounds you know, I'm sorry. How does a sentient racer crabs?
- 22:12Come to be. Gasps.
- 22:17Oh, this is good. I don't know.
- 22:18Suppose Evolution happens different ways or different
- 22:22planets, may be, that kind of thing.
- 22:25If Pippin, Jane Baker can turn vegetable sentient, then gas can
- 22:31turn crabs. Exactly.
- 22:35Yeah, I would like to have seen all this footage of Jamie
- 22:37running around, you know, it was very hot.
- 22:39Yes, I've been it would have been interesting.
- 22:43But I think this is one of the episodes where there isn't any
- 22:46existing footage at all. Oh, really what?
- 22:49And you know what? There's a lot of things about
- 22:51dialogue as well so you will be assessed on the direction quite
- 22:54a bit. I'll my God here's my see.
- 22:56If we go of Dear Old Barney with one of his lovely dances.
- 23:02Everyone up the sun is out. Hey side, that's very good.
- 23:11He's so jolly. Look at him.
- 23:13He is, I would want to work for that man.
- 23:14You know he's, yeah, he's he's got a way of inspiring his
- 23:18dances, he's going to get so I want something gay and cheerful
- 23:23but absolutely. It's always pretty gay and
- 23:26cheerful when you're around on how we must be good.
- 23:29And we must obey, This is really and I really liked the fact that
- 23:35he uses the dogs to get out of the room.
- 23:37You know. Yeah, that's clever.
- 23:40Clever and quick thinking from Jamie, well, I did the same
- 23:43thing at the end of the storage happens.
- 23:44We actually in the animation. See, how did you get here?
- 23:51It's very, it's a very theatrical performer.
- 23:55Yes, and it's very American is very American and so, and I
- 24:02noticed this with the, with the official voice of the
- 24:04controller. It's very, it's an American
- 24:07accent. Like, I don't know whether
- 24:10that's sort of a layer that they're sort of a adding sort
- 24:13of, in performance to sort of add to the falsehood of the
- 24:17American Amen. And all of that as well.
- 24:20Maybe maybe I, you know, because Jamie was introduced, right?
- 24:25And I think he was supposed to be, he was introduced because,
- 24:28you know, he was quite hot, you know.
- 24:30Yeah, I remember there was a letter in Doctor Who magazine
- 24:34there's someone wrote to the production team saying that all
- 24:36the kids in the class for that Jamie was like you know are
- 24:41interactive and that's why I think there's there's something
- 24:45to kind of highlight in him here, you know, dollars yet out.
- 24:48ow, and And being a bit farmed I'll Trust older to come along
- 24:53and spoil, everyone's raw bloody rah.
- 25:01That's most Shoppers a door swing.
- 25:02That's all that was was nicely done.
- 25:04Now went to a party was right? Sorry.
- 25:06I said those yeah, those girls are wearing.
- 25:08Hmm. It's a bit like going on.
- 25:11I'll go out there pretty quick if I'm honest I don't blame you.
- 25:15No guns or anything but it's just giving him away.
- 25:19So he's he's not entirely good at this point.
- 25:22Yeah. Big close-up on Michael craze.
- 25:27Yeah. I don't know but he's struggling
- 25:30like he's struggling against it. Now that's a short.
- 25:34They wouldn't have done you staying.
- 25:38That's just a show. It's very like the the shot in
- 25:41end of the world, isn't it? It is.
- 25:42Yeah. I was just thinking about just
- 25:44needs a big fan at the end. Yeah.
- 25:46Or the scenes in the bowels of the ship in Voyage of the Damned
- 25:50you know that yes it is a style. It's very like the film
- 25:54Forbidden Planet that has a spaceship that looks very much
- 25:57like that. So I wonder if their homage in
- 25:58that on the God. Let this the window.
- 26:01Yep, here we go. Go crabs at their work look.
- 26:04Yeah, I'm always willing to perhaps, do back like this,
- 26:07though. I wouldn't have thought.
- 26:09So I don't think they were that many macra.
- 26:12Now, what we got there? One, two, three, four, five, one
- 26:15scuttling into the room. Yeah, it is.
- 26:18I think the implication from this scene, is that the macro
- 26:21here is voicing. Yeah, it's going on on the
- 26:26screen with the controller, isn't it?
- 26:28So, And he's got an awfully clipped voice.
- 26:32Yes. Yeah, I think come on now.
- 26:38They've literally just spell out.
- 26:39The gas is what? I think we figured this out of
- 26:42this case. Yeah.
- 26:46So what's the moral of the story?
- 26:48Don't get hooked on gas. Like, I'm not sure you're all
- 26:52wet. Yeah, don't go to Holiday camps.
- 26:58Wow, that's a very good moral. Yeah, if you've been to one of
- 27:01her pet, yeah, telling you pontoons Get annoyed, some, get
- 27:11a nice B&B somewhere instead, you know, yeah, you'd be much
- 27:14better off. Okay.
- 27:19Doctor we've got to bring the pilot here.
- 27:21Okay? Yeah okay it's probably talking
- 27:24sense. How can we prove it show them?
- 27:29Yeah, it was actually going. I can't deny it.
- 27:36So do we have a question from frasor for this episode?
- 27:39Oh my God. There is hang on.
- 27:41Yes. I'd forgotten all about him and
- 27:43that's, you know, oh my goodness.
- 27:45All right Frasier happens. So rarely.
- 27:47Okay, this release was slated by a section of fandom for cutting
- 27:51the Rough and Tumble machine sequence which was too complex
- 27:55too complex. Is this a fair criticism?
- 27:59Should the animators have tried harder?
- 28:03I think we on Staten part one, didn't we?
- 28:05We did sorry. Frasier.
- 28:08Yep, we did that. What I said they should have
- 28:11done the wheel in space? No, you should have spent the
- 28:15money on this. Hmm. but, you know, I'm still
- 28:20thankful anyone who's listening from the animators, I'm still
- 28:23thankful. Thank you very much.
- 28:25Hold it bends and Schultz. I know we've already says yeah
- 28:27it's a short repeating myself. This is say, is this an example
- 28:37of an episode for the has completely run out of steam?
- 28:43I do Wonder it's it's you know what I mean?
- 28:49Okay, I'm going through this thing.
- 28:51I'm coming to not macro. I mean Doctor Who in general
- 28:55Classic series Doctor Who is that?
- 28:58These stories generally start very strong and generally end
- 29:03very weak and there are exceptions but that is usually
- 29:07the rule Yeah, you look at the amount of stories that finish
- 29:11with a everything blowing up. Because that's the only way they
- 29:17can can finish it off. Oh, there are.
- 29:19There are so many examples. You can you can tell her that,
- 29:23can you think of a sorry, we're going to go need to talk about
- 29:26something else other than my crochet because not much going
- 29:28on. Can you think of an example of
- 29:30an episode or a final episode from each doctor?
- 29:35Classic series that pays off the story?
- 29:39Whoo. Whoo.
- 29:42That's a very good one. Okay, I'm going to say, yes, I
- 29:48probably can so go far, I don't know if it's child, they make
- 29:54fire and they escape by making fire, which is the one thing the
- 29:58tribe can't do and they have formed an effective team
- 30:02together. And I always think those cavemen
- 30:04episodes deserve more love than they get for what they do.
- 30:08I was going to say the Romans because I think, well, because
- 30:11that's just beautifully plotted that and Applause, come together
- 30:14really beautifully. Beautifully and it just climaxes
- 30:16with the doctor being responsible for the great fire
- 30:20of Rome technically. Okay, trow them Fountain, now
- 30:26quite often they escaped from the base Under Siege.
- 30:29So that finishes the story, Whoo, I mean, I'll say The
- 30:37Darlings so even though this, yeah, yeah, War Games is a good,
- 30:42good choice, power of the Daleks hair of the Daleks builds, a
- 30:45bill to built and finishes brilliantly.
- 30:48Yes. Oh, okay, Pertwee Carnival of
- 30:53monsters are brilliant. Yeah, it's just is so
- 30:57beautifully plotted and yet comes to a perfect end.
- 31:02Tom Baker, see, I think early, Tom Baker, though.
- 31:05The episode Force really struggle.
- 31:07I'd say Genesis ends really well.
- 31:10Yep. To say.
- 31:14Full circle. Oh, yeah, because that's nicely
- 31:18plotted where everything sort of comes together.
- 31:21So you've got enough hints and they do actually make the
- 31:25decision to fly the Starliner off at the end.
- 31:29And I do, I love the Cliffhanger as well.
- 31:31It's like we're stuck in the space-time Continuum.
- 31:34Yes. All right, dejectedly to the
- 31:37camera. Davison Andrews Army.
- 31:42And there are many songs. Do you know, Frontier else is
- 31:46the smell. Yeah, but a lot of amends with
- 31:48massacres. Yep, by Colin Baker. oh, All
- 31:57right, some ways vervoids. Yeah, she knows very much
- 32:03because it's all nicely set up. Yeah, the vine easy.
- 32:06Mmm. And yeah, they're plants.
- 32:09So it's spring summer autumn ever?
- 32:12Yeah. Okay.
- 32:13The voids and McCoy fenric. Vendrick is good.
- 32:18I'm remembrance is really nicely done, but, you know, as I was
- 32:23going through those doctors, I was thinking about Farm or where
- 32:26I was going. No, no, it's not that one yet.
- 32:31Yeah, so we can't lay this blame entirely on Mac, whatever them.
- 32:35No, it's not. It's not alone in that, but in
- 32:39the same breath is still, well, acted.
- 32:40It's still pretty well directed. I think, from what you can tell
- 32:43ya, And again. I want to talk about it because
- 32:51it's, it's such a great premise for a story and such a great
- 32:56setting for a story, and the fact that it becomes a generic
- 33:00Doctor Who story. That's not a, that's not
- 33:03actually a big problem. Really?
- 33:05Because I like generic Doctor Who stories.
- 33:09I mean, I know you don't like it, but I absolutely fucking a
- 33:11door planet of the Daleks, so they don't get more generic than
- 33:14that. Exactly.
- 33:15And that's that is, Possibly the most generic don't do story
- 33:21there is because it does everything you wanted to do and
- 33:24it does it incredibly competently and go up the
- 33:27biggest ventilation that you do on a lot of hot air escaped
- 33:35capture, there's a bomb. Yeah there's everything in that
- 33:39story so much looks like it is bent right over that pole.
- 33:45There, Annie okay, what's occurring now?
- 33:52Oh, there's just told us how long we've got to go for
- 33:54minutes. Yep, here comes some gas.
- 33:57It's coming in there. Oh my God.
- 34:07They're all in trouble. But can someone outside?
- 34:09Save them? Oh, I wonder who that could
- 34:12possibly be the world. Who's the one person it's me?
- 34:18Doc. Is it me?
- 34:20Doc could be media. Doesn't doesn't been going a
- 34:23minute when the back was go. No, don't do it, because it just
- 34:34didn't happen again after this for a long, long time?
- 34:37No. Every single companion is I'll
- 34:40pay for the rest of the show, even ice.
- 34:45Who's supposed to be a fucking Cockney?
- 34:47Yep. That's like your tea goes like
- 34:51yeah. There we go.
- 34:52He's back to normal now. Oh that's all up to been to save
- 34:58the day and make amends here, economical wheels and Michael
- 35:02phrase. Felt a bit put out so much of
- 35:05their stuff was was junked what I would I know Dipper.
- 35:10What leg always said she was really upset that Herrera was
- 35:14so, so missing. She lives to see anyway.
- 35:19The world and web of fear. Yes, she was.
- 35:21Yes, she was yeah, she was still alive in 2013.
- 35:25I was going to mention that earlier actually, because
- 35:28interestingly now I know enemy. The world's reputation kind of
- 35:32shot up when it came. Yes.
- 35:34And Weber fears reputation, even maintained or possibly went
- 35:38down, just a little bit. Because they weren't missing
- 35:43anymore. I don't have that kind of Sheen
- 35:46about them though. They're just, they're just
- 35:49stories that you had watch. This would be.
- 35:52I think that would be exactly the same.
- 35:54For fact, any other story that came back?
- 35:57If we'd got the whole lot back as was rumored in 2013, it would
- 36:02just be another comedy. Yeah, exactly.
- 36:05Well, we all love that. Didn't we were all swept along
- 36:08with it all the EM stories were coming back.
- 36:11Marco Hello. The mythmakers and the macro
- 36:13Terra were all coming back. God's sakes.
- 36:17Those are those threads on Gallifrey base.
- 36:20They do they need to find something to talk about and I.
- 36:22Yeah, oh, look, There Was An Almighty explosion as.
- 36:25I mean, although it was her work backwards.
- 36:28Macro finished off know, they probably make a lovely paella.
- 36:31Now, lovely seafood salad, and everyone's they're all gay and
- 36:40cheerful. Now, Oh, I do like the bit where
- 36:43it's like, all they want to make you the new?
- 36:46Yeah, I think one of the things I love about the trout in years
- 36:50that they do all the way through that he always disappears before
- 36:54he has to say goodbye and runs off.
- 36:57That's why Fury from the Deep Impact.
- 36:59Isn't it because? Yeah because he never does that
- 37:02is she sticking around? So they stay and have dinner and
- 37:05Sierra off properly so really? Yeah, that's really quite
- 37:08affecting. Yeah.
- 37:09It's like when David Tennant's doctor.
- 37:14His first doctor, if we could get more supposed to free
- 37:19doctors really since down for Christmas dinner at the end of
- 37:22the Christmas Invasion, because that his previous Incarnation
- 37:26didn't do that. And it's a marketing, the
- 37:29growing and What is it? Says my mom's getting dinner
- 37:33real good. Put it on simmer, awesome.
- 37:39Yes we pan and pan. And that was a really fun and
- 37:45dance dance. Yeah, you know.
- 37:51Okay, sorry. Rod.
- 37:54You know what we've got to do now I do so I'm going to tell
- 37:58you you just start doing it. You won right?
- 38:00You were so right. Okay so I am going.
- 38:04I'm going to say I G. This setting is good.
- 38:12The setting is a really great idea.
- 38:15The idea of the colony Like a Holiday Camp is a great thing
- 38:19for Doctor Who that works really nicely.
- 38:21Okay. I am going to say as much as
- 38:24I've ripped it a bit, this is the first instant that I can
- 38:31recall. No, the web Planet.
- 38:34I just think, I just think taking a normal creature and
- 38:39blowing it up to a giant size. Sighs is a really fun thing.
- 38:43For dogs who to do and we've clever use of Shadows and things
- 38:47like that. I'm sure there were some pretty
- 38:49tense moments from this. Yeah.
- 38:52Okay, I'm going to st. Michael craze.
- 38:54Oh, because he, he's doing really good.
- 38:56Good stuff. He's got lots to do.
- 38:59He's fought about how to make possessed been different to
- 39:02normal been, but there's still enough of been in in both to
- 39:07make it so work. I think he's really good here
- 39:10and he's He never gets enough kudos for what he does.
- 39:13So I really like him. I'm gonna say the
- 39:18characterization of the second doctor, which lightly coheres in
- 39:22this story and I think this is the blueprint going forward now.
- 39:26Yes, route and responds to it brilliantly.
- 39:29This is his most assured performance at this point in the
- 39:33season. Yep.
- 39:35And so my last one is I'm going to go with the jingles because
- 39:41to just get in your heads like or like all jingle should I
- 39:45think that sets this above-normal doctor who we don't
- 39:50often get music in the story that's actually playing in the
- 39:54story and I think that's, that's really nice.
- 39:58And mine kind of is wrapped up with your one.
- 40:00There is, I'm going to say it's that me.
- 40:04Mix of the very jolly and the Very Sinister.
- 40:08And I think that's a hard mix to pull off but in episode 1 of
- 40:11this story, it does it really, really well.
- 40:15And I always loved it and it doesn't happen very often where
- 40:18the doctor own Co I like on holiday, you know, like bit like
- 40:22Black Orchid, episode one or something like that.
- 40:24And you know this shit's gonna hit the fan, you know,
- 40:26something's going to go wrong but the intention to sort of go
- 40:29somewhere and relax and they actually get back 10 minutes
- 40:32worth of it before things start going wrong.
- 40:34Yes, I got lots of lovely scenes of Anika wheels and all.
- 40:38This is super which is always a good thing.
- 40:41And just as I could as small extra the, like we said in
- 40:46episode one, all of those six, these influences, the the oh,
- 40:50yes. Yeah, it's very much of the
- 40:52time. Yeah.
- 40:55And doctor, who hasn't really captured back sort of 60s
- 40:59obsession, with that much. There's a few in the Indian
- 41:03Street blacks. Other stories by apart from That
- 41:05it shied away from it, something that they did a lot in the
- 41:07Avengers and things like that the Avengers, and the Prisoner
- 41:10and all of that very much tied up with those kind of
- 41:12sensibilities. But you don't often get it in
- 41:14Doctor Who. So whilst this my devolve into a
- 41:18bit of a runaround it does have some interest.
- 41:23It's a fun premise. Yes there is there is wow there
- 41:28we go. I where we going next?
- 41:31I was asking. We're always going back to the
- 41:34second. We keep getting knocked to the
- 41:36Noosa. I think we should go back to
- 41:39manisa next time. I think so.
- 41:41Yes, because I have lots to talk about in that one.
- 41:44I've got to say. I think snake dance potentially
- 41:51has the strongest guest cast of Any classic Doctor Who story and
- 41:58one of the strongest Guest characters Carl step and it's
- 42:05one of the best realized planets.
- 42:08Certainly just? Yeah, again, it's it's a planet.
- 42:14Like we said here, you can't imagine how this actually came
- 42:16to be, but you can see how Medusa came to be because, see
- 42:20how that Civilization has grown and grown up, like it is for me.
- 42:24Its needles, feels like a story that would have been a part of
- 42:27Christopher. Christopher H, bid, Meads.
- 42:29Davison Doctor Who? Yes had it continued at some
- 42:32very good thing and very, very good thing.
- 42:35Well then let's just say, until next time I'm still next time.
- 42:40Joe
