- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. Good on you for tapping on play.
- 0:17Here we are. We are going to read another
- 0:20chapter of God's Word. Isn't this a great story?
- 0:24So wonderful as we begin to hear about this young man and how
- 0:29much faith he has in just how God is going to be present and
- 0:33active and good? Ah, what a wonderful example for
- 0:37us. And today we continue to learn
- 0:40more about not just David and what he does, but more about his
- 0:43character. And as we learn more about his
- 0:46character, let that lens be This is the character that God sees
- 0:52as worthy for his kingship. And ultimately, the things that
- 0:58are worthy about kingship are the characteristics that Jesus
- 1:03personifies perfectly as our King, as we will get to in
- 1:08Hebrews. But that's a long way from here
- 1:11in the New Testament. But this is what the author is
- 1:14starting to set up. This is what God wants you and I
- 1:16to begin to learn as we hear these stories.
- 1:20So with that lens in mind, let's keep reading.
- 1:23Let us read First Samuel chapter 18.
- 1:38After David had finished talking with Saul, he met Jonathan, the
- 1:42King's son. There was an immediate bond
- 1:45between them, for Jonathan loved David.
- 1:48From that day on, Saul kept David with him and wouldn't let
- 1:52him return home. And Jonathan made a solemn pact
- 1:56with David because he loved him as he loved himself.
- 2:01Jonathan sealed the pack by taking off his robe and giving
- 2:04it to David, together with his tunic, sword, bow and belt.
- 2:09Whatever soul asked David to do, David did it successfully.
- 2:14So Saul made him a commander over the men of war, an
- 2:18appointment that was welcomed by the people and souls officers
- 2:22alike. When the victorious Israelite
- 2:25army was returning home after David killed the Philistine,
- 2:29women from all the towns of Israel came out to meet King
- 2:33Saul. They sang and danced for joy
- 2:37with tambourines and symbols. This was their song.
- 2:41Saul has killed his thousands and David his ten thousands.
- 2:48This made saw very angry. Watch this, he said.
- 2:52They credit David with 10 thousands and me with only
- 2:57thousands. Next they'll be making him their
- 2:59king. So from that time on, Saul kept
- 3:04a jealous eye on David. The very next day, a tormenting
- 3:08spirit from God overwhelmed Saul, and he began to rave in
- 3:13his house like a madman. David was playing the harp as he
- 3:17did each day, but Saul had a spear in his hand, and he
- 3:21suddenly hurled it at David, intending to pin him to the
- 3:24wall. But David escaped him twice.
- 3:28Saul was then afraid of David, for the Lord was with David and
- 3:33had turned away from Saul. Finally Saul sent him away and
- 3:37appointed him commander. Over 1000 men and David
- 3:41faithfully led his troops into battle.
- 3:44David continued to succeed in everything he did, for the Lord
- 3:49was with him. When Saul recognised this, he
- 3:53became even more afraid of him. But all Israel and Judah loved
- 3:58David because he was so successful at leading his troops
- 4:02into battle. One day, Saul said to David.
- 4:06I am ready to give you my older daughter Merab as your wife.
- 4:10But first you must prove yourself to be a real warrior by
- 4:15fighting the Lord's battles. For Saul thought.
- 4:19I'll send them out against the Philistines and let them kill
- 4:22him, rather than doing it myself.
- 4:25Who am I? And what is my family in Israel?
- 4:28That I should be the King's son in law?
- 4:31David exclaimed. My father's family is nothing.
- 4:35So when the time came for Saul to give his daughter Merab in
- 4:39marriage to David, he gave her instead to Adriel, a man from
- 4:44Mahola. In the meantime, Saul's daughter
- 4:48Michael had fallen in love with David, and Saul was delighted
- 4:53when he heard about it. Here's another chance to see him
- 4:56killed by the Philistines, Saul said to himself.
- 5:00But to David, he said. Today you have a second chance
- 5:05to become my son in law. Then Saul told his men to say to
- 5:09David, the king really likes you, and so do we.
- 5:13Why don't you accept the King's offer and become his son in law
- 5:17when Saul's men said these things to David?
- 5:19He replied. How can a poor man from a humble
- 5:23family afford the bride price for the daughter of a king?
- 5:28When Saul's men reported this back to the king, he told them.
- 5:32Tell David that all I want for the bride price is 100
- 5:37Philistine foreskins. Vengeance on my enemies is all I
- 5:41really want, but what Saul had in mind was that David would be
- 5:46killed in the fight. David was delighted to accept
- 5:49the offer. Before the time limit expired.
- 5:52He and his men went out and killed 200 Philistines.
- 5:57Then David fulfilled the King's requirement by presenting all
- 6:01their foreskins to him. So Saul gave his daughter
- 6:05Michael to David to be his wife. When Saul realised that the Lord
- 6:09was with David and how much his daughter Michael loved him, Saul
- 6:14became even more afraid of him and he remained David's enemy
- 6:19for the rest of his life. Every time the commanders of the
- 6:23Philistines attacked, David was more successful against them
- 6:27than all the rest of Saul's officers said.
- 6:30David's name became very famous, Our Lord.
- 6:44As we read this story, it's so apparent that, as the author
- 6:49says, you are with David and that everything he did, you
- 6:54blessed and Lord. Incredibly, you tell us that in
- 6:59Jesus you are with us, you are present with us, you are for us,
- 7:07and you love us, and you draw us into your family.
- 7:12You don't try and trick us to kill Philistines and get killed
- 7:16ourselves, but you, just with open arms and without any game
- 7:20playing and just with all the love of a father in your heart.
- 7:25You welcome us into your family and you are for us.
- 7:31Help us never forget that whatever it is that we face, no
- 7:36matter how the challenging days come, that we would always know
- 7:41that you, the mighty God of the universe, is for us, for each
- 7:49one of us. Help us always to know this, and
- 7:55help us always to align our hearts to your Kingdom and your
- 7:59priorities, so that in your name and through your power and
- 8:04favour, we can bring your Kingdom to be a reality here on
- 8:09earth as it is in heaven. So we pray all of this and the
- 8:14mighty saving name of Jesus, OHP man.
