  from

  the

  Message
• 1:06
  A
• 1:06
  Woman
• 1:07
  at
• 1:07
  the
• 1:07
  well
• 1:08
  Jesus
• 1:08
  realized
• 1:09
  that
• 1:09
  the
• 1:09
  Pharisees
• 1:10
  were
• 1:10
  keeping
• 1:10
  count
• 1:11
  of
• 1:11
  the
• 1:12
  baptisms
• 1:12
  that
• 1:12
  he
• 1:12
  and
• 1:12
  John
• 1:13
  performed.
• 1:14
  Although
• 1:14
  his
• 1:14
  disciples,
• 1:15
  not
• 1:15
  Jesus,
• 1:16
  did
• 1:16
  the
• 1:16
  actual
• 1:16
  baptizing,
• 1:17
  they
• 1:18
  had
• 1:18
  posted
• 1:18
  the
• 1:18
  score
• 1:19
  that
• 1:19
  Jesus
• 1:19
  was
• 1:20
  ahead,
• 1:21
  turning
• 1:21
  him
• 1:21
  and
• 1:22
  John
• 1:22
  into
• 1:22
  rivals
• 1:23
  in
• 1:23
  the
• 1:23
  eyes
• 1:23
  of
• 1:23
  the
• 1:23
  people.
• 1:24
  So
• 1:25
  Jesus
• 1:25
  left
• 1:25
  the
• 1:26
  Judean
• 1:26
  countryside
• 1:27
  and
• 1:27
  went
• 1:27
  back
• 1:27
  to
• 1:27
  Galilee.
• 1:29
  To
• 1:29
  get
• 1:29
  there,
• 1:30
  he
• 1:30
  had
• 1:30
  to
• 1:30
  pass
• 1:30
  through
• 1:30
  Samaria.
• 1:31
  He
• 1:32
  came
• 1:32
  into
• 1:32
  Sychar,
• 1:33
  a
• 1:33
  Samaritan
• 1:34
  village
• 1:34
  that
• 1:34
  bordered
• 1:35
  the
• 1:35
  field
• 1:36
  Jacob
• 1:36
  had
• 1:36
  given
• 1:37
  his
• 1:37
  son
• 1:37
  Joseph.
• 1:38
  Joseph's
• 1:39
  well
• 1:39
  was
• 1:39
  still
• 1:40
  there.
• 1:41
  Jesus,
• 1:41
  worn
• 1:41
  out
• 1:42
  by
• 1:42
  the
• 1:42
  trip,
• 1:42
  sat
• 1:42
  down
• 1:42
  at
• 1:43
  the
• 1:43
  well.
• 1:44
  It
• 1:44
  was
• 1:44
  noon.
• 1:46
  Then
• 1:46
  is
• 1:46
  the
• 1:47
  reading
• 1:47
  a
• 1:47
  rather
• 1:48
  short
• 1:48
  reading,
• 1:48
  which
• 1:49
  is
• 1:49
  a
• 1:49
  precursor
• 1:50
  to
• 1:50
  the
• 1:50
  story
• 1:50
  of
• 1:50
  the
• 1:50
  woman
• 1:50
  at
• 1:51
  the
• 1:51
  well.
• 1:52
  And
• 1:52
  so
• 1:52
  let's
• 1:53
  get
• 1:54
  into
• 1:54
  this
• 1:55
  passage
• 1:55
  here
• 1:56
  with
• 1:56
  some
• 1:57
  understanding
• 1:58
  of
• 1:59
  going
• 1:59
  deeper.
• 2:00
  What
• 2:00
  is
• 2:00
  this,
• 2:00
  the
• 2:01
  significance
• 2:02
  of
• 2:02
  this
• 2:02
  precursor,
• 2:03
  this
• 2:03
  setup,
• 2:04
  to
• 2:04
  the
• 2:04
  woman
• 2:05
  at
• 2:05
  the
• 2:05
  well
• 2:05
  story?
• 2:06
  So
• 2:07
  a
• 2:07
  couple
• 2:07
  of
• 2:07
  points
• 2:07
  to
• 2:07
  ponder.
• 2:09
  First,
• 2:09
  one
• 2:09
  is
• 2:09
  this
• 2:09
  Jesus
• 2:10
  walked
• 2:10
  away
• 2:11
  from
• 2:11
  the
• 2:11
  scoreboard
• 2:12
  and
• 2:12
  toward
• 2:12
  the
• 2:12
  people
• 2:13
  everyone
• 2:13
  else
• 2:13
  avoided.
• 2:15
  The
• 2:15
  Pharisees
• 2:15
  had
• 2:16
  turned
• 2:16
  faith
• 2:16
  into
• 2:16
  a
• 2:16
  competition.
• 2:18
  Who's
• 2:19
  baptizing
• 2:19
  more?
• 2:20
  Who
• 2:20
  is
• 2:20
  winning?
• 2:21
  Jesus
• 2:22
  wanted
• 2:22
  no
• 2:22
  part
• 2:23
  of
• 2:23
  that.
• 2:24
  I
• 2:24
  think
• 2:24
  this
• 2:25
  matters
• 2:25
  so
• 2:25
  much
• 2:25
  for
• 2:25
  us
• 2:26
  today
• 2:26
  because
• 2:26
  we
• 2:26
  live
• 2:26
  in
• 2:26
  a
• 2:27
  world
• 2:27
  that
• 2:27
  scores
• 2:27
  everything.
• 2:29
  Attendance
• 2:30
  numbers
• 2:32
  influence
• 2:32
  metrics.
• 2:34
  Church
• 2:35
  has
• 2:35
  not
• 2:35
  been
• 2:35
  immune
• 2:35
  to
• 2:35
  this.
• 2:36
  Of
• 2:36
  course,
• 2:37
  we
• 2:38
  measure
• 2:38
  success
• 2:39
  by
• 2:39
  how
• 2:39
  many
• 2:39
  seats
• 2:40
  are
• 2:40
  filled
• 2:40
  up,
• 2:40
  by
• 2:41
  how
• 2:41
  big
• 2:41
  the
• 2:41
  building
• 2:41
  is,
• 2:42
  how
• 2:43
  viral
• 2:43
  the
• 2:43
  sermon
• 2:44
  went.
• 2:45
  But
• 2:45
  Jesus
• 2:45
  looked
• 2:46
  at
• 2:46
  that
• 2:46
  whole
• 2:46
  system
• 2:46
  and
• 2:47
  said,
• 2:47
  I'm
• 2:47
  going
• 2:48
  to
• 2:48
  Samaria
• 2:48
  instead.
• 2:49
  I'm
• 2:50
  moving
• 2:50
  on.
• 2:50
  In
• 2:50
  other
• 2:50
  words,
• 2:51
  to
• 2:51
  keep
• 2:51
  spreading
• 2:51
  the
• 2:51
  good
• 2:52
  news.
• 2:53
  He
• 2:53
  walked
• 2:53
  away
• 2:53
  from
• 2:54
  the
• 2:54
  people
• 2:54
  where
• 2:55
  from
• 2:55
  the
• 2:55
  from
• 2:55
  the
• 2:56
  place
• 2:56
  where
• 2:56
  the
• 2:56
  people
• 2:56
  were
• 2:56
  keeping
• 2:57
  score
• 2:58
  and
• 2:58
  walked
• 2:59
  toward
• 2:59
  the
• 2:59
  place
• 2:59
  where
• 2:59
  people
• 3:00
  have
• 3:00
  been
• 3:00
  written
• 3:00
  off.
• 3:01
  Now,
• 3:01
  I'm
• 3:02
  a
• 3:02
  big
• 3:02
  fan
• 3:02
  of
• 3:02
  sports.
• 3:03
  Colts,
• 3:03
  Pacers,
• 3:04
  Indiana
• 3:05
  Fever,
• 3:05
  Indiana
• 3:05
  University,
• 3:07
  sports
• 3:08
  in
• 3:08
  the
• 3:08
  community
• 3:08
  where
• 3:09
  I
• 3:09
  live
• 3:09
  in
• 3:09
  Annapolis,
• 3:10
  Indiana.
• 3:11
  And
• 3:11
  I
• 3:11
  love
• 3:12
  to
• 3:12
  say
• 3:12
  scoreboard,
• 3:13
  and
• 3:13
  especially
• 3:13
  in
• 3:13
  the
• 3:14
  games
• 3:14
  that
• 3:14
  our
• 3:15
  teams
• 3:15
  win.
• 3:16
  But
• 3:16
  in
• 3:17
  this
• 3:17
  case,
• 3:18
  the
• 3:18
  understanding
• 3:19
  is
• 3:19
  faith
• 3:20
  isn't
• 3:20
  a
• 3:20
  game
• 3:20
  to
• 3:20
  keep
• 3:21
  score
• 3:21
  on.
• 3:22
  And
• 3:22
  the
• 3:22
  moment
• 3:23
  we
• 3:23
  start
• 3:23
  treating
• 3:23
  it
• 3:24
  like
• 3:24
  a
• 3:24
  scoreboard,
• 3:25
  we
• 3:25
  don't
• 3:25
  win.
• 3:27
  Jesus
• 3:27
  didn't
• 3:28
  come
• 3:28
  for
• 3:28
  winners
• 3:28
  and
• 3:29
  losers.
• 3:29
  He
• 3:30
  came
• 3:30
  to
• 3:30
  show
• 3:30
  up,
• 3:32
  especially
• 3:32
  in
• 3:32
  the
• 3:33
  places
• 3:33
  where
• 3:33
  nobody
• 3:33
  else
• 3:34
  expected
• 3:34
  him
• 3:34
  to
• 3:34
  be.
• 3:34
  In
• 3:36
  a
• 3:36
  second
• 3:37
  point
• 3:37
  to
• 3:37
  ponder,
• 3:38
  Jesus
• 3:39
  shows
• 3:39
  up
• 3:39
  tired,
• 3:39
  thirsty,
• 3:40
  fully
• 3:40
  human.
• 3:41
  And
• 3:42
  that's
• 3:42
  kind
• 3:42
  of
• 3:42
  the
• 3:42
  whole
• 3:42
  point.
• 3:43
  I
• 3:44
  love
• 3:44
  that
• 3:44
  John
• 3:44
  doesn't
• 3:44
  really
• 3:45
  clean
• 3:45
  this
• 3:45
  up
• 3:45
  at
• 3:45
  all.
• 3:46
  He
• 3:46
  doesn't
• 3:46
  say
• 3:47
  Jesus
• 3:47
  arrived
• 3:48
  in
• 3:48
  radiant
• 3:48
  glory.
• 3:50
  He
• 3:50
  says
• 3:51
  Jesus
• 3:51
  was
• 3:51
  worn
• 3:51
  out,
• 3:52
  he
• 3:52
  sat
• 3:52
  down.
• 3:53
  It
• 3:54
  was
• 3:54
  the
• 3:54
  hottest
• 3:54
  part
• 3:54
  of
• 3:54
  the
• 3:55
  day.
• 3:55
  He
• 3:55
  was
• 3:55
  depleted.
• 3:56
  And
• 3:57
  it's
• 3:57
  from
• 3:57
  this
• 3:57
  place
• 3:58
  of
• 3:58
  exhaustion
• 3:58
  and
• 3:59
  need
• 3:59
  that
• 3:59
  one
• 4:00
  of
• 4:00
  the
• 4:00
  most
• 4:00
  transformative
• 4:01
  conversations
• 4:02
  and
• 4:02
  the
• 4:02
  entire
• 4:03
  gospel
• 4:03
  is
• 4:03
  about
• 4:04
  to
• 4:04
  happen.
• 4:06
  I
• 4:06
  think
• 4:06
  we've
• 4:06
  been
• 4:07
  taught
• 4:07
  that
• 4:07
  we
• 4:07
  have
• 4:07
  to
• 4:08
  have
• 4:08
  it
• 4:08
  all
• 4:08
  together
• 4:08
  before
• 4:09
  God
• 4:09
  can
• 4:10
  use
• 4:10
  us,
• 4:11
  that
• 4:11
  we
• 4:11
  need
• 4:11
  to
• 4:11
  be
• 4:12
  rested,
• 4:12
  prepared,
• 4:12
  polished,
• 4:13
  prayed
• 4:13
  up.
• 4:14
  But
• 4:14
  Jesus
• 4:15
  did
• 4:15
  some
• 4:15
  of
• 4:15
  his
• 4:15
  most
• 4:15
  important
• 4:16
  work
• 4:16
  while
• 4:16
  running
• 4:16
  on
• 4:17
  empty.
• 4:18
  You
• 4:18
  know,
• 4:19
  I
• 4:19
  do
• 4:19
  a
• 4:19
  weekly
• 4:19
  podcast
• 4:20
  about
• 4:20
  people
• 4:20
  impacted
• 4:21
  by
• 4:21
  cancer,
• 4:22
  and
• 4:22
  I
• 4:22
  can
• 4:23
  tell
• 4:23
  you
• 4:23
  that
• 4:23
  some
• 4:23
  of
• 4:24
  those
• 4:24
  sacred
• 4:24
  conversations
• 4:25
  that
• 4:25
  take
• 4:25
  place
• 4:26
  have
• 4:27
  happened
• 4:27
  with
• 4:27
  people
• 4:27
  who
• 4:28
  don't
• 4:28
  have
• 4:28
  much
• 4:28
  left
• 4:28
  in
• 4:29
  their
• 4:29
  physical
• 4:29
  health.
• 4:31
  No
• 4:31
  energy
• 4:31
  for
• 4:31
  performance,
• 4:32
  no
• 4:32
  strength
• 4:32
  for
• 4:32
  pretense.
• 4:34
  Just
• 4:34
  being
• 4:34
  raw,
• 4:35
  honest
• 4:35
  and
• 4:35
  totally
• 4:36
  human.
• 4:37
  And
• 4:37
  that's
• 4:37
  exactly
• 4:38
  what
• 4:38
  happens
• 4:38
  here.
• 4:40
  They've
• 4:41
  in
• 4:42
  a
• 4:42
  situation
• 4:42
  where
• 4:42
  they
• 4:43
  have
• 4:43
  nothing
• 4:43
  else
• 4:43
  to
• 4:44
  give
• 4:44
  but
• 4:44
  to
• 4:44
  be
• 4:45
  truly
• 4:46
  human.
• 4:47
  Love
• 4:47
  that.
• 4:48
  Here's
• 4:49
  your
• 4:49
  action
• 4:49
  step
• 4:49
  for
• 4:50
  this
• 4:50
  week.
• 4:51
  Jesus
• 4:51
  deliberately
• 4:52
  chose
• 4:52
  a
• 4:52
  road
• 4:52
  everyone
• 4:53
  else
• 4:53
  avoided.
• 4:54
  And
• 4:54
  this
• 4:54
  week
• 4:55
  I'd
• 4:55
  like
• 4:55
  for
• 4:55
  you
• 4:55
  to
• 4:55
  take
• 4:56
  one
• 4:56
  step
• 4:56
  towards
• 4:56
  a
• 4:56
  person,
• 4:57
  a
• 4:57
  group,
• 4:58
  a
• 4:58
  conversation
• 4:59
  that
• 4:59
  you
• 4:59
  normally
• 5:00
  might
• 5:00
  avoid
• 5:01
  or
• 5:01
  go
• 5:01
  around.
• 5:02
  Maybe
• 5:03
  there's
• 5:03
  someone
• 5:03
  in
• 5:03
  your
• 5:03
  life
• 5:04
  from
• 5:04
  a
• 5:04
  different
• 5:04
  background
• 5:05
  or
• 5:05
  different
• 5:05
  nationality,
• 5:06
  language,
• 5:06
  group,
• 5:07
  belief
• 5:07
  system.
• 5:08
  A
• 5:09
  different
• 5:09
  side
• 5:09
  of
• 5:10
  whatever
• 5:11
  is
• 5:11
  comfortable
• 5:12
  for
• 5:12
  you
• 5:13
  may
• 5:13
  make
• 5:13
  you
• 5:13
  feel
• 5:14
  uncomfortable.
• 5:16
  And
• 5:16
  instead
• 5:16
  of
• 5:16
  taking
• 5:17
  a
• 5:17
  long
• 5:17
  way
• 5:17
  around
• 5:17
  or
• 5:18
  avoiding
• 5:18
  it,
• 5:18
  go
• 5:18
  through
• 5:18
  it.
• 5:20
  Be
• 5:20
  an
• 5:20
  interaction,
• 5:22
  exchange
• 5:22
  with
• 5:22
  people.
• 5:23
  Not
• 5:23
  to
• 5:23
  try
• 5:24
  to
• 5:24
  fix
• 5:24
  things
• 5:24
  or
• 5:24
  convert
• 5:25
  others,
• 5:26
  just
• 5:26
  be
• 5:26
  present,
• 5:27
  just
• 5:27
  to
• 5:27
  be
• 5:27
  in
• 5:28
  conversation.
• 5:29
  Sit
• 5:30
  down
• 5:30
  at
• 5:30
  the
• 5:30
  well,
• 5:30
  as
• 5:31
  it
• 5:31
  were.
• 5:32
  Show
• 5:32
  up
• 5:32
  human.
• 5:33
  That's
• 5:34
  where
• 5:34
  real
• 5:34
  encounters
• 5:35
  take
• 5:35
  place.
• 5:37
  So
• 5:37
  before
• 5:37
  we
• 5:38
  pray,
• 5:38
  I
• 5:38
  just
• 5:38
  want
• 5:38
  to
• 5:38
  share
• 5:38
  that
• 5:39
  we
• 5:39
  do
• 5:39
  have
• 5:39
  another
• 5:40
  resource
• 5:40
  for
• 5:40
  you
• 5:41
  love
• 5:41
  for
• 5:41
  you
• 5:41
  to
• 5:42
  pick
• 5:42
  up.
• 5:42
  It's

• 5:48

• 5:48
  let's
• 5:48
  pray
• 5:51
  God,
• 5:51
  we
• 5:51
  confess
• 5:51
  that
• 5:52
  a
• 5:52
  lot
• 5:52
  of
• 5:52
  times
• 5:52
  we're
• 5:52
  like
• 5:52
  scoreboards.
• 5:54
  We
• 5:54
  like
• 5:54
  knowing
• 5:55
  who's
• 5:55
  ahead,
• 5:55
  where
• 5:55
  we
• 5:56
  rank.
• 5:56
  And
• 5:56
  sometimes
• 5:57
  we've
• 5:57
  turned
• 5:57
  our
• 5:57
  faith
• 5:58
  into
• 5:58
  a
• 5:58
  competition
• 5:59
  and
• 6:00
  who's
• 6:00
  more
• 6:00
  faithful,
• 6:01
  more
• 6:01
  correct,
• 6:01
  more
• 6:01
  righteous.
• 6:02
  Just
• 6:03
  forgive
• 6:03
  us
• 6:03
  of
• 6:03
  that,
• 6:04
  please.
• 6:05
  Thank
• 6:05
  you
• 6:05
  for
• 6:05
  a
• 6:06
  Jesus
• 6:06
  who
• 6:06
  walked
• 6:06
  away
• 6:06
  from
• 6:07
  numbers
• 6:07
  and
• 6:07
  toward
• 6:08
  people,
• 6:09
  the
• 6:09
  people
• 6:09
  that
• 6:09
  everyone
• 6:10
  else
• 6:10
  was
• 6:10
  avoiding.
• 6:12
  Thank
• 6:12
  you
• 6:12
  that
• 6:12
  he
• 6:12
  showed
• 6:12
  up
• 6:13
  tired
• 6:13
  and
• 6:13
  thirsty
• 6:14
  and
• 6:14
  completely
• 6:14
  human.
• 6:15
  Because
• 6:15
  it
• 6:16
  means
• 6:16
  we
• 6:16
  don't
• 6:16
  have
• 6:16
  to
• 6:16
  pretend
• 6:17
  that
• 6:17
  we
• 6:17
  have
• 6:17
  it
• 6:17
  all
• 6:17
  together,
• 6:18
  ourselves.
• 6:19
  And

  for
