- 0:00Speaker 1: Online fighting. There's no greater joy. It's one more thing
- 0:04Speaker 1: I'm strong, and one more thing.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Before we get to Katie's story. I just got a
- 0:11Speaker 2: text from someone I have ah a texting relationship with
- 0:16Speaker 2: somebody that I have no idea who they.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Are, Like a texting relationship that can be a lot
- 0:24Speaker 1: of things.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I might have a real relationship with them. I just
- 0:28Speaker 2: I just don't know who it is. It's somebody who
- 0:29Speaker 2: texts me from a number I don't have a name
- 0:31Speaker 2: attached to it. And uh and they the like comment
- 0:37Speaker 2: on things they heard on the show, or say what
- 0:39Speaker 2: you got planned this weekend for the big three day
- 0:41Speaker 2: weekend or whatever. I'll just say, uh, not much about you,
- 0:46Speaker 2: you know, and uh And I don't have any idea
- 0:48Speaker 2: who it is. And I've been doing this for with
- 0:52Speaker 2: this person for they don't text a lot.
- 0:57Speaker 3: About how often is not a lot?
- 0:59Speaker 2: It'll go Oh, it goes in bursts like there're probably
- 1:02Speaker 2: been three in the last week, and then there might
- 1:03Speaker 2: be months before I hear from them again. Okay, and
- 1:06Speaker 2: then and then they'll text me a few times. Again,
- 1:08Speaker 2: I have no idea who it is. And it's been
- 1:09Speaker 2: going on for eight ten years. I mean a really
- 1:16Speaker 2: long time. It's me Jackiet do it during commercial.
- 1:22Speaker 3: That would be even better if it was Michael after that.
- 1:25Speaker 2: But that's what I'm afraid of it. I'm afraid of
- 1:26Speaker 2: it somebody like like I know really well, and if
- 1:31Speaker 2: I say all of a sudden, it'd be weird to
- 1:33Speaker 2: say it. At this point after eight years, I just
- 1:36Speaker 2: gotta fiss up. I don't have any idea who you are?
- 1:39Speaker 2: Who am I I mean? Because that would be hurtful,
- 1:42Speaker 2: and especially if it's somebody like it might be the
- 1:46Speaker 2: lady that answers the phone at the tax play at
- 1:48Speaker 2: the insurance place where I get my car insurance. I'll
- 1:50Speaker 2: just use that for an example. Same lady has been
- 1:52Speaker 2: dealing with me for my car insurance for fifteen years. Yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 2: I don't know her name, or I do know her name,
- 1:59Speaker 2: but I don't know her number.
- 2:01Speaker 1: But will you got You wouldn't be on a texting
- 2:03Speaker 1: relationship like that, right, No?
- 2:06Speaker 2: Well, I don't know. People get your number through weird ways.
- 2:11Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I don't have any idea who this. They sent me
- 2:13Speaker 2: a text today about how good the show was, and.
- 2:15Speaker 3: I have an idea. Are you ready? Next time? They text? You.
- 2:20Speaker 1: You respond back with, hey, I'm really sorry. I just
- 2:23Speaker 1: got a new phone and it blew out all of
- 2:25Speaker 1: my contacts.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Who is this?
- 2:26Speaker 2: That's great. That is the sort of cleverness women come
- 2:30Speaker 2: up with. That is the manipulative type stuff. You're devious, devious,
- 2:36Speaker 2: that is really good.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Yeah, so just let this this.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Little round fizzle and then the next time they text
- 2:42Speaker 1: you be like a new phone.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Who dis brand new phone? All my contacts. I'm having
- 2:47Speaker 2: to do this with sorry about that? Who is this?
- 2:49Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gonna be somebody you just hate.
- 2:53Speaker 2: I was gonna go with I've got a flat tire.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Here I am alongside the road. Could you come help
- 2:59Speaker 2: me and then wait and see who shows up?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Could you buy chance to send a picture of your driver's license,
- 3:06Speaker 1: just so you know, trying to compare something. That's it.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I'm trying to verify all my contacts. If you could
- 3:11Speaker 2: send a picture of a driver's license from end back,
- 3:14Speaker 2: that would be very handy for me.
- 3:15Speaker 3: How rightey, three verify just you know, Oh that's so fine.
- 3:20Speaker 1: See you said eight to ten and I was thinking
- 3:24Speaker 1: months years jack, As you said, sir, what are you doing?
- 3:30Speaker 2: This is the problem with lying and why it's a
- 3:32Speaker 2: good idea not to because it always goes further down
- 3:36Speaker 2: the road and you end up in a weird positions.
- 3:37Speaker 2: So by lying the first time the first several years,
- 3:41Speaker 2: I guess, of pretending I know who it is, then
- 3:44Speaker 2: it gets too awkward to try to fix it after that.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Yeah, you're way too deep.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Now, there's kind of I mean, if it's somebody close
- 3:53Speaker 2: that is like, really helped me a lot through the years,
- 3:55Speaker 2: it's merely going to hurt their feelings. Right, Oh so
- 3:58Speaker 2: all this time you were texting back, you know, you
- 4:02Speaker 2: have a good y two k also or whatever. I
- 4:06Speaker 2: don't remember how long this has been going on. That
- 4:11Speaker 2: darn Obama. However long this has been going on, they'll think, well,
- 4:16Speaker 2: you were just you were. This wasn't real, This wasn't
- 4:18Speaker 2: a real connection.
- 4:19Speaker 1: We have no just bullshitting your way through it, Jack,
- 4:23Speaker 1: what you were doing exactly.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Oh well, if they listen to the podcast, they'll probably
- 4:29Speaker 2: reach out.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Is that me.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Oh I wonder, I wonder how many people will text
- 4:33Speaker 1: you after this and be like, uh hey, now wait
- 4:35Speaker 1: a minute.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah, oh man, what a what a what is that
- 4:40Speaker 2: something web we weave whenever when we practice to deceive.
- 4:43Speaker 2: It's very very true. Okay, so arguingly online, what is
- 4:46Speaker 2: that all about, Katie?
- 4:47Speaker 1: I can't even believe that I got into this this weekend.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And it was with somebody that I'm somewhat familiar with.
- 4:55Speaker 1: We have kind of a broadcasting relationship, if you will.
- 5:00Speaker 1: And I had asked this person to post a link
- 5:03Speaker 1: for me to And I know that like sharing gofundmes
- 5:08Speaker 1: is sketch, right, I understand that once you start sharing one,
- 5:11Speaker 1: you gotta share them all. But I had created a
- 5:14Speaker 1: GoFundMe for a business in my hometown that was really
- 5:17Speaker 1: devastated by a fire, and these guys do a lot
- 5:19Speaker 1: for our community. So I had contacted this page and said, hey,
- 5:23Speaker 1: would you mind sharing it? And I don't know, and
- 5:26Speaker 1: I completely will own this. I don't know if it
- 5:29Speaker 1: was actually insulting what he said, or if my hormones
- 5:32Speaker 1: are just going nuts, because it could totally be one
- 5:34Speaker 1: of the two, right, but I possible the way that
- 5:39Speaker 1: he came back at me and was like, we have
- 5:42Speaker 1: a policy and we've dealt with fraud gofundmes before, so
- 5:46Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to turn you down.
- 5:48Speaker 3: And my brain went, wait a minute.
- 5:50Speaker 2: That's a little that's a little cold.
- 5:51Speaker 3: It was.
- 5:53Speaker 1: That wasn't word for word, but it was along that tone,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and I just I looked at it, and for some
- 5:57Speaker 1: reason my brain went this effort questioning my integrity.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Right now he is.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Wondering if I am gonna send somebody who I've known
- 6:05Speaker 1: for years, I'm gonna send him this. Anyway, we end
- 6:08Speaker 1: up going back and forth for a few times where
- 6:10Speaker 1: I'm just going, you know what, dude, don't worry about it.
- 6:11Speaker 1: I'll figure out another way to handle this page. It
- 6:14Speaker 1: doesn't have to come back to you. But he wouldn't
- 6:16Speaker 1: stop messaging me.
- 6:17Speaker 3: After that, like doubling down and doubling down.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Right, I'm not a good loser, so now I'm doubling
- 6:24Speaker 1: down back.
- 6:26Speaker 3: This went on all of Saturday, Wow all.
- 6:30Speaker 1: I mean I was out and about doing other things,
- 6:32Speaker 1: but you know, my phone would take to be like
- 6:34Speaker 1: hang on, it's the dick, and I'd pick my phone
- 6:36Speaker 1: up and get into it and Drew's looking at me
- 6:39Speaker 1: like you've lost it, You've gone off the deep end. Anyway,
- 6:44Speaker 1: it ended up we ended up fizzling it out and
- 6:47Speaker 1: you know, kind of giving each other the yeah, you
- 6:49Speaker 1: have a nice day too. With the middle finger attack.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Really now you actually no, I told him have.
- 6:55Speaker 1: A nice day, you take care now like that, you know,
- 6:58Speaker 1: and with the thought up emoji though, because I didn't
- 7:01Speaker 1: want to use the middle finger, so I went with
- 7:02Speaker 1: the thumbs up because.
- 7:03Speaker 3: That's the next best.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And then after I said that, another message at one
- 7:09Speaker 1: in the morning, so I finally just wrote back, listen,
- 7:12Speaker 1: I am not this is not going to take over
- 7:14Speaker 1: my Sunday as well. But I got roped into an
- 7:16Speaker 1: internet fight, which I rarely do.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, I don't either.
- 7:20Speaker 1: But it's but it was this weird like I don't
- 7:25Speaker 1: know that if I walked by this guy, because I've
- 7:27Speaker 1: interacted it with him with a.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Couple, I don't know that i'd recognize him.
- 7:30Speaker 1: But for some reason, so onto the Saturday he had
- 7:33Speaker 1: my undivided attention.
- 7:34Speaker 2: What did he continue to uh? And uh? There are
- 7:37Speaker 2: three of us on this show who have had pregnant wives,
- 7:40Speaker 2: so we can attest to the fact that, uh, a
- 7:44Speaker 2: woman who's going through the whole pregnancy or getting pregnant
- 7:47Speaker 2: or whatever period of her life, you do not to
- 7:48Speaker 2: get into arguments with you just do not. But in
- 7:53Speaker 2: what way would he this guy continue it. I mean,
- 7:55Speaker 2: once you said that's fine, I'll find some other place
- 7:57Speaker 2: to do it and tried to drop it. How did
- 7:59Speaker 2: he continue doing gage?
- 8:00Speaker 3: It was so he explained himself.
- 8:03Speaker 1: And then I was like, all right, dude, whatever, you
- 8:05Speaker 1: know me, but I get where you're coming from.
- 8:07Speaker 3: We'll just move past it. And then what should have.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Ended there, He started sending me links to fraudulent go
- 8:13Speaker 1: fund me articles, right, and I'm like, okay, I don't
- 8:17Speaker 1: need any of this. And now I feel and now
- 8:19Speaker 1: I feel like you're even more telling me that you
- 8:21Speaker 1: think I'm going to send you something fraud So it's just, dude,
- 8:24Speaker 1: it just spiraled. And I remember I was sitting on
- 8:28Speaker 1: the floor Saturday and that's when I went, I have
- 8:30Speaker 1: to text the guys.
- 8:31Speaker 3: This is insane. So that was when I set the
- 8:32Speaker 3: text to you guys. I was so red hot pissed.
- 8:36Speaker 3: It was another level.
- 8:38Speaker 2: The problem is and I recently met an adult who
- 8:42Speaker 2: told me this and they were absolutely right.
- 8:44Speaker 3: They do not.
- 8:46Speaker 2: If they find themselves starting to react to a text,
- 8:49Speaker 2: they always talk themselves down, saying I need to get
- 8:51Speaker 2: on the phone with them or something, because text has
- 8:54Speaker 2: no tone. I mean, there's just you can misread the
- 8:57Speaker 2: tone of a text so much. I've had it both
- 9:01Speaker 2: ways where I like, completely misread something as sarcasm that
- 9:05Speaker 2: was straight or vice versa, something that that they were
- 9:09Speaker 2: that they were trying to be sarcastic, and I read
- 9:15Speaker 2: it as straight, and so it was insulted. I mean,
- 9:17Speaker 2: And it can go both directions so easily, And I
- 9:21Speaker 2: kind of like that as a rule of thumb from
- 9:22Speaker 2: now and if I find myself starting to get charged
- 9:24Speaker 2: up over a text, I need to calm down and
- 9:26Speaker 2: make sure that's actually what the text says or what
- 9:30Speaker 2: they meant before I get all bent out of shape
- 9:32Speaker 2: over it.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Where were you with these wide wise words on Saturday morning, Jack?
- 9:37Speaker 3: While I was blowing a gasket.
- 9:40Speaker 1: It was totally and and I reiterated this to him,
- 9:43Speaker 1: and I've said it here, but like, this absolutely could
- 9:45Speaker 1: have been on me, But the way it typed out
- 9:48Speaker 1: and the way it read to me, it was like, oh,
- 9:50Speaker 1: it's on dude.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah, man, And what's I don't know that I've ever
- 9:54Speaker 2: engaged in that, but I've certainly witnessed them between friends
- 9:57Speaker 2: of mine. I've seen friends of mine on Twitter get
- 9:59Speaker 2: into battle and they just can't let it go and
- 10:02Speaker 2: like two successful smart people get into it, and it
- 10:07Speaker 2: devolved so quickly from the original topic into just you know,
- 10:13Speaker 2: and the horse you rode in on or whatever the
- 10:15Speaker 2: insults are. And it's just amazing that that we have
- 10:19Speaker 2: that part of our human nature. Ye, it's so hard
- 10:21Speaker 2: to do. But again, if you take anything away from
- 10:23Speaker 2: this podcast, I think this is a good one. This
- 10:25Speaker 2: should be on bumper stickers. If you start to get
- 10:28Speaker 2: react to a text or tweet or whatever, try to
- 10:31Speaker 2: get to the source, get them on the phone or
- 10:33Speaker 2: something and find out if that's actually what they meant,
- 10:35Speaker 2: because it quite possibly is not.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Yeah, you could cut out the whole drama of it all,
- 10:40Speaker 1: but yeah, and the other element of it was I
- 10:44Speaker 1: think the continuation of the conversation. I was also I'm
- 10:49Speaker 1: very blessed that this was not on like a public wall.
- 10:51Speaker 1: This happened on Messenger, so only I'm the one who's
- 10:54Speaker 1: embarrassed by my own self.
- 10:56Speaker 3: But you know, I see these fights all the time on.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Facebook and all that, and you're right, they completely spiral
- 11:03Speaker 1: into stupidity every time.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Yep.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and the whole.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Uh, I'll let you have the last word, you know,
- 11:12Speaker 4: and then they'll let you you get the last word,
- 11:14Speaker 4: and then they say one more thing, just a short thing,
- 11:17Speaker 4: of course you do, or something like that, of.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Course you do, sure every time. Anyway, So that was
- 11:25Speaker 3: my Saturday.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Oh boy, let's all learn that lesson. Let's not react
- 11:28Speaker 2: to text until we know what the intent was. That's
- 11:30Speaker 2: what we've learned today, Michael. All these years and Jack
- 11:33Speaker 2: didn't know it was me. Well, I guess that's it.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Oh boy,
