- 1:01Speaker 5: Juicy Scoop.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Hello and welcome to Juicy Scoop. I want to introduce
- 1:06Speaker 4: you guys to Zhao Ying Summers, a hilarious female, we
- 1:10Speaker 4: have to always say female before stand up, God forbid,
- 1:13Speaker 4: stand up comic who I met a little while ago
- 1:16Speaker 4: on a fun boat day. And your special is coming
- 1:20Speaker 4: out November 8th on Hulu.
- 1:23Speaker 6: And you're gorgeous and funny. Welcome.
- 1:26Speaker 7: Thank you so much. You are gorgeous and funny.
- 1:28Speaker 5: I literally just left Sacramento Punchline and your face is
- 1:32Speaker 5: on the wall. And I said, Zing, that is Heather.
- 1:35Speaker 5: He's like, oh my gosh, she's so stunning. You have
- 1:36Speaker 5: to dress up for her. I got lazy recently and
- 1:41Speaker 5: my fan complained that I saw she dress up and
- 1:43Speaker 5: she looked like a mop.
- 1:45Speaker 6: Really?
- 1:45Speaker 7: Yeah, I said, I'm going to have to glam up
- 1:47Speaker 7: for Heather.
- 1:48Speaker 6: I'm very excited.
- 1:49Speaker 4: You know what's really funny about the female stand-up dressing up?
- 1:54Speaker 4: So when I started, you know, it was, like, very conservative.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Everybody was wearing, like, pants and, like, pantsuits. And this is, like,
- 2:04Speaker 4: in the 90s. Or they were, like, grunge, which grunge was,
- 2:08Speaker 4: I don't know if you know what grunge is, but
- 2:09Speaker 4: it was, like, not flat. It was my worst because
- 2:12Speaker 4: I was, like, glam sorority girl. But I still always
- 2:14Speaker 4: kind of, like, never showed my legs, always just wore, like,
- 2:18Speaker 4: I'd wear like skinny jeans and a blouse and whatever.
- 2:21Speaker 4: And then in the last like five years, a lot
- 2:25Speaker 4: of the newer up and coming younger female comics have
- 2:28Speaker 4: gotten glammed up. You, Hannah Burner, like I love that
- 2:33Speaker 4: you dress up. And your, like, this outfit, is this
- 2:37Speaker 4: from the special?
- 2:38Speaker 7: Yes, I designed it with my designer.
- 2:39Speaker 5: I told her I wanted a Chinese qipao-inspired dress, and
- 2:43Speaker 5: she made this for me.
- 2:44Speaker 7: So we hand— there' s a snake. I'm a snake.
- 2:47Speaker 6: That's my zodiac sign.
- 2:48Speaker 5: Oh. And so here's a snake, and she designed that.
- 2:50Speaker 5: Gold means money. Red is the China red.
- 2:53Speaker 6: Lucky color.
- 2:53Speaker 7: So we designed this outfit.
- 2:55Speaker 6: I think it's great. Thank you.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Like, you know, no reason to diminish being beautiful or sexy,
- 3:01Speaker 4: but definitely— in the group of female comics that came
- 3:04Speaker 4: up with me, there was that for sure in the
- 3:07Speaker 4: beginning to just, because it was like, well, if you're
- 3:09Speaker 4: too sexy, like that'll be distracting from the jokes or,
- 3:13Speaker 4: you know, you'll look like you're just trying to just,
- 3:15Speaker 4: that's all you're good for is like showing your sexiness.
- 3:19Speaker 4: So I think I love it that you can be
- 3:21Speaker 4: so yourself. Tell us a little bit about your background.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Where did you, where did you come from?
- 3:27Speaker 7: I'm from China, grew up in China.
- 3:29Speaker 5: I was born in the nineties. We had a one
- 3:31Speaker 5: child policy. So, basically, you can only have one child.
- 3:36Speaker 5: And Chinese family, they are very traditional. They want to
- 3:38Speaker 5: make sure they have a son to carry on the
- 3:40Speaker 5: family oppression. So, like, when I was born, everyone was
- 3:44Speaker 5: so disappointed. And I was told my father took me
- 3:47Speaker 5: to the dumpster. He took me there.
- 3:49Speaker 6: Is this all true? That's all true. This is not
- 3:51Speaker 6: part of the... Yeah, that was the plan.
- 3:53Speaker 5: It turns out it was actually, there's a family was
- 3:55Speaker 5: going to take me.
- 3:56Speaker 7: Because you can't have kids.
- 3:57Speaker 6: They're just... But another Chinese family.
- 3:59Speaker 5: They'll take a girl. But yeah, they'll take a girl.
- 4:02Speaker 5: But my mom, they just told me the story was
- 4:04Speaker 5: they took me to dumpster. I think my mother, when
- 4:08Speaker 5: my father gave me to the other family, she just,
- 4:12Speaker 5: she regretted it. And she started screaming and she ran
- 4:15Speaker 5: out and she took me back.
- 4:17Speaker 6: How long were you at the other family's house? No,
- 4:19Speaker 6: I didn't leave. They were there.
- 4:21Speaker 5: They were ready to take me. But that was basically...
- 4:24Speaker 5: It's a very rural area. They may sell me to someone.
- 4:27Speaker 5: So I don't really know what I would end up.
- 4:29Speaker 5: But thank God my mother, she wants to keep me.
- 4:32Speaker 5: But she made sure that I know.
- 4:34Speaker 6: It every day.
- 4:34Speaker 5: Whenever I do something wrong, she goes, I brought you
- 4:36Speaker 5: back from the dumpster. You know, you can't get A-.
- 4:38Speaker 5: A- is not A.
- 4:41Speaker 6: Number one. Did she, are your parents still here?
- 4:44Speaker 7: My mother actually, she moved from China to America.
- 4:48Speaker 5: I think when my daughter was about to born to
- 4:51Speaker 5: come to America to help me because I just got
- 4:53Speaker 5: a divorce.
- 4:54Speaker 7: So she's actually living with me now. My mother moved.
- 4:56Speaker 6: What happened to your dad?
- 4:58Speaker 7: He's still in China. We are trying to get him
- 5:00Speaker 7: here eventually.
- 5:01Speaker 5: He's a very severe alcoholic, but now he stopped drinking,
- 5:04Speaker 5: which is great.
- 5:05Speaker 7: Because he had a stroke. That helped.
- 5:07Speaker 6: But your mom is still married to him. They're still married.
- 5:10Speaker 5: The Chinese people just don't... They don't believe in divorce
- 5:12Speaker 5: because they believe in suffering.
- 5:14Speaker 7: They wanted to suffer. Because the more you suffer, you
- 5:17Speaker 7: get a better life.
- 5:19Speaker 5: Really?
- 5:19Speaker 7: You stay married, you suffer more, and you have a
- 5:21Speaker 7: better life, the next life.
- 5:22Speaker 6: Oh, then I'm definitely going to have a great life.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Okay, so with that story, I have some historical questions.
- 5:33Speaker 6: When did that policy... come into play in China?
- 5:36Speaker 5: I think it was the 80s, around the 80s, because
- 5:40Speaker 5: China found out that our population is too large.
- 5:43Speaker 7: But India didn't care. India don't give a fuck. They
- 5:45Speaker 7: keep having babies.
- 5:46Speaker 5: India has more kids now, more population now than China.
- 5:49Speaker 5: But the Chinese policy wanted to control the population. So
- 5:53Speaker 5: they want every family only have one child. But the
- 5:56Speaker 5: Chinese are so traditional.
- 5:57Speaker 6: And now hasn't it like backfired? Aren't they saying like.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Oh yes, for sure it backfired. The gender is imbalanced.
- 6:05Speaker 5: There's so much more male and less female. Therefore, a
- 6:09Speaker 5: lot of rural areas, the men, they can't afford to
- 6:11Speaker 5: have a wife. So all the ugly bitches, they are demanding,
- 6:14Speaker 5: you know, you have ugly daughter and five brothers. She
- 6:18Speaker 5: will demand.
- 6:19Speaker 6: Five cars and five houses. For real?
- 6:22Speaker 5: So she can get married and then her brothers can
- 6:24Speaker 5: get the house and cars. And I mean, they are
- 6:26Speaker 5: so powerful, not the ugly girls, even the ugly ones.
- 6:29Speaker 6: Really? That is amazing. So, um, You know, it's interesting.
- 6:34Speaker 4: There was just a weird time in history where there
- 6:36Speaker 4: was like a lot of talk of overpopulation. And my
- 6:41Speaker 4: mom had five kids and I was the fifth. And
- 6:45Speaker 4: she said one day during that like talk of the news,
- 6:48Speaker 4: it was like viral news stories of overpopulations.
- 6:51Speaker 6: She was at the grocery store with all five kids, you.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Know, and we were within 10 years to like, so
- 6:57Speaker 4: the oldest would be like nine and I'd be like
- 6:58Speaker 4: an infant. And she said, on more than one occasion,
- 7:02Speaker 4: someone would come up to her right here in, in
- 7:05Speaker 4: the Valley, LA and say, how dare you overpopulate the
- 7:08Speaker 4: world like this with your kids?
- 7:11Speaker 7: People are so annoying.
- 7:12Speaker 6: Well, it's just, it's just whatever is in the news.
- 7:15Speaker 4: You know, it's like, you know, I, I just saw
- 7:17Speaker 4: a funny video that was like, you know, the, if
- 7:20Speaker 4: the few, if the, the health people came from the,
- 7:23Speaker 4: you know, there was a time when they said, eat
- 7:25Speaker 4: the eggs. And they said, don't eat the eggs. And
- 7:27Speaker 4: they said, only eat the egg whites. Now they say, no,
- 7:29Speaker 4: you can eat the whole egg. Like, There's just things
- 7:32Speaker 4: where we don't really know what's going on. So with that,
- 7:37Speaker 4: did they really, they really did send like the little
- 7:40Speaker 4: girls down the river, right?
- 7:42Speaker 5: For the families, because you can only have one child.
- 7:45Speaker 5: Once you have a girl, you will never be allowed
- 7:48Speaker 5: to have a boy anymore. So whenever someone have a girl,
- 7:51Speaker 5: they hide the girl. For someone, they can send their
- 7:54Speaker 5: girl to the relatives to hide it. They can hide that.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Or someone, they just don't have a choice. They leave
- 8:00Speaker 5: the girl's, By the trash can or by the river.
- 8:04Speaker 4: So is that when other countries were then starting to
- 8:08Speaker 4: adopt the girls?
- 8:10Speaker 5: Most girls that got adopted in the big cities, they
- 8:13Speaker 5: would have the chance. But in the rural area, they
- 8:15Speaker 5: don't really have access for adoption.
- 8:17Speaker 6: For international adoption.
- 8:19Speaker 7: Yeah, they just get rid of the girls so they
- 8:20Speaker 7: can have a chance to have a boy.
- 8:22Speaker 4: So what if then you have your girl and you're
- 8:24Speaker 4: keeping your girl and you get pregnant again and you
- 8:27Speaker 4: do have a boy, then who gets the boy?
- 8:29Speaker 5: You don't get to get pregnant. They will forcefully sterilize you.
- 8:37Speaker 4: So after your mom had you, she had to go
- 8:39Speaker 4: to the doctor and they had to sterilize her?
- 8:41Speaker 7: In a lot of cases. In a lot of cases.
- 8:44Speaker 5: Basically, they are going to get birth control device in
- 8:48Speaker 5: you that is really, really severe. And if you don't
- 8:51Speaker 5: learn from your lessons, you get sterilized. They find out
- 8:55Speaker 5: you are hiding kids. Sometimes they will inject to your
- 9:00Speaker 5: stomach when they find out you are having a second
- 9:03Speaker 5: child without permission.
- 9:05Speaker 6: I swear we're going to get to the funny stuff,
- 9:06Speaker 6: but this is just fascinating to me. It's very sad because...
- 9:09Speaker 6: So when did it... What's the policy now? When did
- 9:11Speaker 6: it change?
- 9:12Speaker 7: Now China want more kids.
- 9:13Speaker 6: So when did it switch? Like around what time?
- 9:16Speaker 5: I think after late 90s, mid-late 90s, it switched because...
- 9:20Speaker 5: the gender imbalance becomes a problem. And the human trafficking
- 9:24Speaker 5: becomes a problem. People are taking advantage of the little girls.
- 9:27Speaker 5: And that becomes a problem. So the government canceled that.
- 9:30Speaker 5: And now, because it's so expensive to raise kids and
- 9:35Speaker 5: send them to education, a lot of younger Chinese people,
- 9:37Speaker 5: they don't want kids. And now the Chinese government is
- 9:40Speaker 5: encouraging couples to have two kids. They'll pay you money
- 9:43Speaker 5: to have a second kid, third kid. Wow.
- 9:47Speaker 4: I knew some of this, but you really explained it well.
- 9:50Speaker 4: So when, so you're growing up in this rural area
- 9:54Speaker 4: as an only child, when and how did you come
- 9:57Speaker 4: over to America?
- 9:58Speaker 5: I I don't know. I, I, I was told a
- 10:02Speaker 5: thing about, uh, for example, being a girl, you have
- 10:05Speaker 5: to be quiet. You have to be sweet. You have
- 10:08Speaker 5: to be obedient. That's the attractive traits of being a girl.
- 10:12Speaker 5: I happen to be a very loud girl. I want attention.
- 10:16Speaker 5: I was ambitious. And I wanted to be in the
- 10:19Speaker 5: school place. I like to read and study. But I
- 10:22Speaker 5: was told that in Chinese beauty standard, I'm too ugly
- 10:26Speaker 5: to be in any school place because of my big cheeks,
- 10:28Speaker 5: my big lips.
- 10:29Speaker 7: And I like to be in the sun. So I'm dark.
- 10:32Speaker 7: I don't believe it.
- 10:33Speaker 5: But I don't think I'm ugly. My mom said, it's
- 10:36Speaker 5: the gender. Your face looks like a pretty boy. You
- 10:39Speaker 5: can be a good-looking man. But as a girl, you're
- 10:41Speaker 5: just not attractive.
- 10:41Speaker 6: She was saying that to you at what age?
- 10:43Speaker 7: Very young.
- 10:44Speaker 6: I was three.
- 10:44Speaker 5: She would just tell me, your lips are like dumpling lips.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Suck your lips in. Because big lips is.
- 10:49Speaker 6: Ugly in China.
- 10:49Speaker 7: They want girls to have little baby bird asshole lips.
- 10:52Speaker 6: Like this.
- 10:54Speaker 5: Like big lips is like girls with our lips. People
- 10:57Speaker 5: just think we are a problem.
- 10:58Speaker 6: So was your mom the... the epitome of a tiger mom? Yeah,
- 11:02Speaker 6: she definitely is. Okay.
- 11:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:04Speaker 7: I got, I got whooped every day for breathing.
- 11:08Speaker 5: She, she, I didn't believe it. I, I saw, I didn't,
- 11:11Speaker 5: I saw she was lying to me, but then I
- 11:13Speaker 5: want to wear pink dresses and all the girls would
- 11:15Speaker 5: throw egg at me, be like, go back to Africa.
- 11:17Speaker 5: That's how racist they were. Against even like, I'm a
- 11:20Speaker 5: Chinese girl. I'm not even dark. I look Filipina at most.
- 11:24Speaker 5: And the colorism is insane. Because not really about the racism,
- 11:29Speaker 5: more about the classism. Because in Chinese history, they favor
- 11:35Speaker 5: fair skin, light skin. Because if you have light skin,
- 11:38Speaker 5: it means you never went to the farm. So being rich,
- 11:41Speaker 5: you know, classism. Being wealthy is considered attractive. So if
- 11:45Speaker 5: your skin is dark, it means you're a farmer.
- 11:48Speaker 6: You're not attractive.
- 11:49Speaker 5: So I was born with dark skin because I look
- 11:52Speaker 5: like my dad. My dad had dark skin. But if
- 11:54Speaker 5: you are a man, you have dark skin. It means
- 11:56Speaker 5: you work hard.
- 11:57Speaker 6: It's attractive.
- 11:58Speaker 5: But as a woman, you have to be hidden in
- 12:00Speaker 5: the room. You never see the sun because your family
- 12:03Speaker 5: is wealthy. You don't have to work. And I just,
- 12:05Speaker 5: I had no idea. I couldn't audition for any school plays.
- 12:08Speaker 5: And I auditioned for Mulan. And they told me you
- 12:10Speaker 5: can play Mulan's father.
- 12:13Speaker 6: In China?
- 12:13Speaker 5: In China.
- 12:14Speaker 7: I was playing Mulan's father. My big cheeks, they were like,
- 12:18Speaker 7: you're a man.
- 12:19Speaker 5: I always was called a man and I finally just
- 12:21Speaker 5: stopped trying to be cute. I still felt I'm cute,
- 12:25Speaker 5: but I kind of cut my hair short and I
- 12:27Speaker 5: started wearing cool boys outfit. I didn't felt bad. I
- 12:31Speaker 5: just thought they were not ready for me. I just,
- 12:33Speaker 5: I didn't think I was ugly, but it was sad.
- 12:35Speaker 5: You know, I wanted to be popular. I want to
- 12:36Speaker 5: wear the pink dresses.
- 12:37Speaker 7: That's why.
- 12:38Speaker 5: Now I'm a big girl now. I want to wear
- 12:40Speaker 5: all the beautiful dresses. I want to be a girl.
- 12:42Speaker 5: I want to have my long hair, finally. So I
- 12:44Speaker 5: enjoy it so much.
- 12:46Speaker 4: I saw in your Instagram really great clips that you share.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Everyone should follow her. But you had someone in the
- 12:53Speaker 4: audience who was from Thailand and you were like, oh,
- 12:56Speaker 4: did you check the, and you just touched the middle
- 12:59Speaker 4: of your throat for like the Adam's apple. Since we're
- 13:01Speaker 4: just talking about history and what's true and what's not,
- 13:06Speaker 4: is it really true that one out of 10 boys
- 13:09Speaker 4: is sort of sent to be a lady boy?
- 13:11Speaker 5: Yes, in Thailand, because sometimes in Asian culture, for example,
- 13:17Speaker 5: if you date a Chinese boyfriend, a real Chinese boyfriend, Chinese-Chinese,
- 13:22Speaker 5: Once you start dating engaged, the boy is going to
- 13:24Speaker 5: get you 10 sets of gold jewelries.
- 13:26Speaker 6: Going to get you sorry, what?
- 13:28Speaker 5: Jewelries.
- 13:28Speaker 6: Gold jewelries.
- 13:29Speaker 5: And it's his responsibility to buy an apartment for you
- 13:35Speaker 5: as a commitment. Like engaged, married, the boy has to
- 13:38Speaker 5: buy a house for the girl and him. And he
- 13:41Speaker 5: has to buy a car. Like it's just your responsibility.
- 13:43Speaker 5: If you can't buy a house and a car, you
- 13:45Speaker 5: can't find a wife. That's in Asian culture.
- 13:48Speaker 6: That's a.
- 13:49Speaker 7: Commitment is security. You have to give the woman the security.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Okay. So she can commit her life to you. So
- 13:53Speaker 5: same in Thailand, it's the same Asian culture, is that
- 13:56Speaker 5: a lot of rural area in Thailand, the boys, they
- 13:59Speaker 5: are born, they would not, their family have two or
- 14:02Speaker 5: three boys. They can't afford to get a wife for
- 14:04Speaker 5: the second boy because they can only afford one house,
- 14:08Speaker 5: one car. So the second boy would become a guy
- 14:12Speaker 5: who never got married. So it's cheaper to make this
- 14:16Speaker 5: boy a lady boy So they can perform and entertain
- 14:19Speaker 5: and make money and make a living for himself or
- 14:22Speaker 5: herself or themself.
- 14:24Speaker 6: I don't know how to say that.
- 14:27Speaker 4: So they start raising them as a lady boy.
- 14:29Speaker 6: It's not like the child is like, I see myself
- 14:32Speaker 6: as a girl.
- 14:32Speaker 5: No, no. It's the The family don't have a choice
- 14:35Speaker 5: because they want to make sure this boy would not
- 14:40Speaker 5: have to be starving and they can't find it. Because
- 14:43Speaker 5: in Chinese culture, if you.
- 14:45Speaker 6: Are a man... Do any of the ladyboys ever, like,
- 14:48Speaker 6: escape and go back to being a guy?
- 14:50Speaker 7: I think definitely there are.
- 14:53Speaker 6: Wow. Yeah.
- 14:55Speaker 5: You know, the biggest problem in Asian culture is if
- 14:58Speaker 5: a family had a son and they don't have the
- 15:01Speaker 5: ability to get... gets the money and security for the
- 15:04Speaker 5: son to get married, for son to not get married,
- 15:06Speaker 5: and the family, the parents believe themselves. It's for the
- 15:10Speaker 5: rural area. The big cities, they don't care. The kids,
- 15:13Speaker 5: they never get married. They don't, like, their minds are
- 15:16Speaker 5: more open. You know, they respect their kids. A lot
- 15:18Speaker 5: of Chinese young kids, they are very open-minded, and they
- 15:21Speaker 5: don't want to get married.
- 15:22Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 15:22Speaker 5: There's people who are gays, and there are lesbians, and
- 15:25Speaker 5: they want to live their life. But in the rural area,
- 15:27Speaker 5: they don't know anything more than, okay, if I cannot
- 15:30Speaker 5: get my son a wife, I'm just going to do whatever.
- 15:34Speaker 6: What about the robots? What about just getting a robot wife?
- 15:38Speaker 5: Do you think that's going to happen? They wanted to
- 15:42Speaker 5: have the son to marry their wife and have a baby.
- 15:45Speaker 6: To have a real baby.
- 15:46Speaker 4: But I'm saying, do you know of any young men
- 15:49Speaker 4: that just say, forget it?
- 15:51Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure. I'm just going to get this, like,
- 15:53Speaker 6: robot or this, like, you know.
- 15:55Speaker 7: Yeah, a lot in Japan, I think.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Yeah, like, oh, like, you know, where they look like
- 15:59Speaker 4: a sex doll, like a sex doll, but they're, like, high-end.
- 16:02Speaker 6: Yeah, I think so.
- 16:03Speaker 7: That will be for people in the big cities, cosmopolitan.
- 16:06Speaker 6: Oh, my gosh.
- 16:07Speaker 5: Like, wealthy kids who, yeah, some men, they give up
- 16:11Speaker 5: on women. They want a sex doll who is very submissive,
- 16:14Speaker 5: can do whatever they want.
- 16:15Speaker 6: Well, yeah. What are you going to do? Sit in
- 16:16Speaker 6: the corner?
- 16:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:18Speaker 6: She can't get up and go out with her friends
- 16:19Speaker 6: for a four-hour brunch.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 6: If she's sitting and she's a doll.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:23Speaker 6: So, um, okay. So how did you come over here then?
- 16:26Speaker 5: I was 18 and I wanted to come to America.
- 16:29Speaker 5: I wanted, I was planning for four years before I
- 16:32Speaker 5: was 18. When I was 14, I already knew I
- 16:34Speaker 5: want to come to America because my, uh, my mom
- 16:36Speaker 5: was helping with her, her little, uh, her niece. Uh,
- 16:40Speaker 5: she was, uh, she was much older than me.
- 16:43Speaker 7: She was 10 years older than me.
- 16:44Speaker 6: The niece, your cousin.
- 16:45Speaker 7: She got married when she was 22.
- 16:46Speaker 5: And she wanted to open a business as a, It's
- 16:50Speaker 5: a video rental, like a little movie CD rental business.
- 16:54Speaker 5: My mother helped me with it. It was near her restaurant.
- 16:56Speaker 5: She said, I'll help you with your business, but you
- 16:58Speaker 5: have to babysit Jiao Ying after she comes from school,
- 17:02Speaker 5: you know, after middle school. You have to help with
- 17:04Speaker 5: her homework and let her sit in your business. So
- 17:07Speaker 5: I stayed there. My whole time I was selling Japanese
- 17:09Speaker 5: porn to people because we had a pair of Japanese porn.
- 17:12Speaker 7: It was all in China still. In China.
- 17:15Speaker 5: I was selling Japanese porn when I was 11. I
- 17:17Speaker 5: just set the porn CD and they'll give me money.
- 17:20Speaker 5: And I do my homework and I start to watch
- 17:21Speaker 5: the Hollywood movies. I start to watch the women, women,
- 17:25Speaker 5: dark skin, beautiful woman, Latino woman, black woman in the movies.
- 17:28Speaker 5: And I just, they are so beautiful. They got beautiful cheekbones.
- 17:32Speaker 5: They got dark skin and big lips. But obviously they
- 17:35Speaker 5: are so beautiful. Why am I ugly? Like what's wrong
- 17:37Speaker 5: with this beauty standards?
- 17:38Speaker 6: It's fucked up.
- 17:39Speaker 5: So I said, I can still do acting. I just
- 17:41Speaker 5: cannot be in China. They are not ready for me.
- 17:44Speaker 5: I got to go to Hollywood. I'm going to America.
- 17:46Speaker 5: But I can't tell my mom that because she thinks
- 17:48Speaker 5: actresses are prostitutes. So I just also know because I
- 17:52Speaker 5: have no connection in America, I was thinking about I
- 17:55Speaker 5: could never become a starving artist. I would learn how
- 17:58Speaker 5: to do business, how to make money, so I can
- 18:00Speaker 5: use the money I make to train myself as an artist.
- 18:04Speaker 5: I learned, I studied a lot about the Confucianism and
- 18:08Speaker 5: I Ching and the Chinese, the art of war. I
- 18:10Speaker 5: wanted to learn how to be a successful person, but
- 18:13Speaker 5: I wanted to not struggle from like, because once you
- 18:16Speaker 5: want money from people, you don't do art. You go
- 18:19Speaker 5: to audition, you're begging them to give you a role
- 18:21Speaker 5: so you can pay rent. It's not art. You are
- 18:23Speaker 5: so pressured to do things that's for money. So I
- 18:27Speaker 5: wanted to make sure I learned something that I can
- 18:29Speaker 5: make money. So I told my mother, I want to
- 18:30Speaker 5: learn finance in America. I want to learn economics.
- 18:33Speaker 6: And she said, no.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Because I was very good at school and I was
- 18:38Speaker 5: getting in Peking University, which is China's Harvard for literature.
- 18:42Speaker 5: She wanted me to go there to become a professor.
- 18:43Speaker 5: I love writing and reading, but I also like to perform.
- 18:47Speaker 5: I want to do all of it. But because of
- 18:49Speaker 5: how I look in China, I can't even get in
- 18:51Speaker 5: a drama school because of my look.
- 18:54Speaker 6: It's just so crazy because.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Hopefully you guys jump over to YouTube and watch it,
- 19:00Speaker 4: but you're... By all.
- 19:01Speaker 6: Standards, you're gorgeous. Thank you.
- 19:05Speaker 4: At least in America in 2025, you're very, very attractive.
- 19:09Speaker 6: Thank you. So that's just so interesting.
- 19:13Speaker 4: What does your mom, just to jump forward to today,
- 19:15Speaker 4: has your mom gotten any nicer?
- 19:19Speaker 6: She is.
- 19:21Speaker 5: I think the moment I started giving her money, she
- 19:23Speaker 5: just kind of forgave me for being ugly. And also
- 19:26Speaker 5: China has changed a little bit. They become more open-minded
- 19:29Speaker 5: about tanning. and a little diverse beauty, but it's still
- 19:34Speaker 5: very tough, very judgmental. The Chinese actresses, they are 90 pounds,
- 19:38Speaker 5: and they are bleached white. I was doing a Chinese movie,
- 19:44Speaker 5: my first marriage, I was in China, I got in
- 19:46Speaker 5: a Chinese TV show, and I was instructed to do
- 19:51Speaker 5: a jaw surgery because my jaw was too big.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Too wide. Too wide.
- 19:55Speaker 5: I don't look like a woman. They said you look
- 19:57Speaker 5: like a man or like a trans woman, whatever. So
- 20:00Speaker 5: they want me to shave my jaw. Also, they want
- 20:02Speaker 5: me to bleach my skin. I didn't want to shave it.
- 20:04Speaker 5: So they did the haircut, like a bob haircut. They
- 20:07Speaker 5: glue the hair on my cheeks to cover my face.
- 20:12Speaker 5: And they bleached my skin. But they make my face
- 20:14Speaker 5: so white, but my neck's dark. So they started to IV,
- 20:18Speaker 5: like IV treatment, IV bleaching.
- 20:20Speaker 6: And did it work?
- 20:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I got white, but they also just think I
- 20:24Speaker 5: was too fat. I was a size zero, but in China,
- 20:27Speaker 5: I was too big. So I was eating spinach. So
- 20:31Speaker 5: one time I was on set and I fainted.
- 20:34Speaker 6: I passed out.
- 20:35Speaker 5: I said, I can't remember my lines. They're like, don't worry.
- 20:37Speaker 5: Move your lips and stand there.
- 20:39Speaker 6: We hate your voice.
- 20:39Speaker 5: We have a voiceover actress who's very talented. I was like, okay,
- 20:43Speaker 5: you hate my face. You hate my body. You hate
- 20:46Speaker 5: my skin. You also hate my voice. I don't think
- 20:49Speaker 5: I should do this.
- 20:50Speaker 6: Yeah. I am done. And how old.
- 20:53Speaker 7: Were you then? I was 26.
- 20:55Speaker 5: So I decided at 27, I decided to come back
- 20:57Speaker 5: to America.
- 20:58Speaker 6: So you were in America, but then you got a
- 21:00Speaker 6: job in China. And she went back.
- 21:02Speaker 5: Yeah, I hosted the Chinese Shanghai Film Festival. And that's
- 21:04Speaker 5: when I met my husband, my ex-husband. You met him where?
- 21:08Speaker 6: In Shanghai.
- 21:09Speaker 7: I was hosting the Shanghai Film Festival.
- 21:11Speaker 5: For the English section.
- 21:13Speaker 6: So I met him there.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Cooler days are made for warm welcomes and moments that last.

- 21:49Speaker 3: on the show, I sit down with extraordinary people who
- 21:52Speaker 3: have faced tremendous setbacks and yet somehow have found a
- 21:56Speaker 3: way to turn them into their greatest strengths.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Life is one long lesson of chaos.
- 22:02Speaker 2: I'm heading to the Emmys, and I have police complaints
- 22:04Speaker 2: filed against me.
- 22:05Speaker 7: When your free will was about to be taken from you,
- 22:07Speaker 7: what would you do if it was given back?
- 22:10Speaker 3: Where did that need come from where you thought that
- 22:13Speaker 3: you had to succeed in order to feel loved?
- 22:15Speaker 5: He said, I have a work dad.
- 22:16Speaker 3: I need a home dad.
- 22:17Speaker 1: What happens next?
- 22:18Speaker 7: When I came in, he started crying.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Everybody in life encounters hardships. What defines them is not
- 22:24Speaker 3: those hard moments that they go through. It's about what
- 22:27Speaker 3: happens next.
- 22:28Speaker 6: I decided to risk it all. I realized how valuable
- 22:31Speaker 6: every day was. You're worth the work. Listen, Dara, I'm
- 22:34Speaker 6: not going to pull punches. You can use your voice
- 22:36Speaker 6: even if it's shaped.
- 22:37Speaker 3: The stories are different, but the impact is the same.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Only one question matters. What happens next?
- 22:51Speaker 6: And was he in the film business too?
- 22:53Speaker 7: He was in telecom and trading, whatever.
- 22:57Speaker 5: He was wealthy, but it was a very bad experience.
- 23:01Speaker 5: It was a very bad marriage. In the beginning, it
- 23:03Speaker 5: was gaslighting. Everything was beautiful.
- 23:06Speaker 6: Love bombing. Yeah, love bombing is a word. Love bombing.
- 23:08Speaker 6: And what was his ethnic background?
- 23:10Speaker 7: He's a Chinese man.
- 23:11Speaker 6: Oh, from China. Was he American too, though, or no?
- 23:14Speaker 5: He's very Chinese, but he was kind of international. He
- 23:17Speaker 5: speaks English well. He was very handsome, very.
- 23:20Speaker 6: Charming.
- 23:21Speaker 7: Very good looking. So I was love bombed by him.
- 23:24Speaker 6: Okay. And then.
- 23:26Speaker 7: It's a good lesson. A lot of materials.
- 23:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:29Speaker 8: Yes.
- 23:30Speaker 4: And then when did the love bombing stop and you
- 23:32Speaker 4: realize who the fuck did I marry?
- 23:34Speaker 7: He's not like.
- 23:35Speaker 5: He's not calling me ugly and fat and he's not
- 23:38Speaker 5: saying your legs are so short, you know.
- 23:39Speaker 7: You should be wearing high heels. I said, but I'm pregnant.
- 23:42Speaker 7: He goes, yeah, you're still short, pregnant. You look shorter.
- 23:46Speaker 7: You're fatter now. It just got... It become.
- 23:49Speaker 5: I think because he's... insecure deep down he wants to
- 23:52Speaker 5: chip away my confidence yeah so he can control me
- 23:57Speaker 5: like a caged bird he'll pull your feather one day
- 23:59Speaker 5: by one you don't realize it's like when you are
- 24:01Speaker 5: boiling a frog with warm water slowly increasing the temperature
- 24:05Speaker 5: you don't know until you're like okay i'm dead so
- 24:08Speaker 5: it took me a long time he starts saying things
- 24:10Speaker 5: like oh you look very tired with no makeup on
- 24:13Speaker 5: please make sure when i wake up you already have
- 24:15Speaker 5: your makeup on i don't want to look at your face.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Now, where were you living when he was saying this
- 24:20Speaker 4: and you were pregnant with your first child?
- 24:22Speaker 7: I was in Beijing.
- 24:23Speaker 6: Okay. And you said he was wealthy, so did you
- 24:26Speaker 6: have a nice home that he was providing for you? Yeah,
- 24:28Speaker 6: it was a very luxurious home.
- 24:30Speaker 7: But when I met him, I was in finance.
- 24:31Speaker 4: Were you one of those Chinese people that went and
- 24:34Speaker 4: bought the high-end, real luxury goods?
- 24:37Speaker 6: Yes, I didn't buy that.
- 24:39Speaker 5: He bought them because his friends are all rich and wealthy.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Because I came to America as a struggling student. I
- 24:46Speaker 5: worked five jobs. So, and then I got in finance
- 24:48Speaker 5: and I made my money, but I'm not obviously not
- 24:50Speaker 5: as rich as him, but the money I make, I
- 24:52Speaker 5: can support my grandpa and my grandmother and my mom,
- 24:55Speaker 5: you know, that's like comfortable.
- 24:56Speaker 6: So you were doing finance in what part of America?
- 25:00Speaker 5: Um, I was in, I had a job in Orange
- 25:02Speaker 5: County to do, to, to hedge fund. And at the
- 25:04Speaker 5: same time I was taking acting classes with Howard Fine.
- 25:07Speaker 6: I was auditioning. I love Howard Fine.
- 25:10Speaker 5: I got his, uh, uh, Big class and I got
- 25:13Speaker 5: his master class. So I was training, acting, I started auditioning.
- 25:17Speaker 5: That's when I met my ex-husband. I wasn't wealthy, but
- 25:20Speaker 5: I also, I would never buy expensive bags. I would
- 25:24Speaker 5: use the money to buy my apartment, pay my mortgage.
- 25:27Speaker 7: I didn't have the money.
- 25:28Speaker 5: He buy the good things, the expensive stuff because he
- 25:31Speaker 5: wanted to make sure I show off.
- 25:33Speaker 7: I don't look poor in front of his friend's wife.
- 25:36Speaker 7: That's what he.
- 25:37Speaker 6: So he wanted you to have like the nice bag.
- 25:38Speaker 5: Yeah, he wanted to give me the nice things, but
- 25:40Speaker 5: he actually... Slowly, he fired the maid. He said that
- 25:44Speaker 5: you should be cooking. As the wife, if you don't
- 25:47Speaker 5: cook for me, that you are not a beautiful wife.
- 25:49Speaker 5: He stopped becoming a different person once I got pregnant.
- 25:53Speaker 6: And so then you had your baby, and who's that?
- 25:55Speaker 7: I had the first baby, my boy, my son.
- 25:58Speaker 6: How old is he now?
- 25:59Speaker 7: He's now six.
- 26:00Speaker 5: And after I had him, I moved back to America,
- 26:03Speaker 5: and I wanted to leave him. But because of this boy,
- 26:08Speaker 5: and he's a Chinese man, and if I don't have
- 26:10Speaker 5: enough money, I can't take my son. So I wanted
- 26:13Speaker 5: to get myself a career. Because if we got married
- 26:16Speaker 5: in California, it's a different story. I have more rights
- 26:19Speaker 5: as a woman. But in China, the richer part of
- 26:22Speaker 5: the spouse is going to get whatever they want. So
- 26:25Speaker 5: I want to come back to America. John Singleton, I
- 26:28Speaker 5: remember I auditioned for John Singleton, and it was for
- 26:31Speaker 5: one of the shows called Rebel. And there's a black girl,
- 26:34Speaker 5: it's a cop. Her best friend's a Chinese girl. So
- 26:36Speaker 5: he asked me, what do you think? I said, that's
- 26:37Speaker 5: rush hour on a budget.
- 26:39Speaker 7: And he's like, you know what?
- 26:40Speaker 5: You should try stand-up. You're going to be a star.
- 26:42Speaker 5: I said, do I have the job? He goes, no,
- 26:44Speaker 5: I don't understand the words you said, bitch. But he did.
- 26:47Speaker 4: So he suggested you do stand-up.
- 26:49Speaker 5: Yeah, he suggested and he introduced me. We had lunch
- 26:52Speaker 5: and he gave me a whole history of stand-up because
- 26:54Speaker 5: in China, we don't have stand-up. Stand-up is new recently, six,
- 26:58Speaker 5: five years ago. But I had no idea you can
- 27:00Speaker 5: make a living. I've always been funny. I always talk.
- 27:03Speaker 6: I like to write.
- 27:04Speaker 7: So I said, I'll try open mic.
- 27:06Speaker 6: I tried to open mic. Obviously, I bombed.
- 27:08Speaker 5: But there's something there I felt that gave me more
- 27:10Speaker 5: freedom is because as an actress, you wait for the audition. Yeah.
- 27:14Speaker 5: But as a comedian, they can laugh at us all
- 27:16Speaker 5: they want. They can make fun of us. But as
- 27:19Speaker 5: long as we're getting on the stage, we're getting better.
- 27:21Speaker 5: So I knew I wanted to do this. And I
- 27:23Speaker 5: asked him, how can I get good?
- 27:25Speaker 7: He goes, get 10,000 hours.
- 27:27Speaker 6: Get what?
- 27:28Speaker 1: 10,000 hours.
- 27:29Speaker 6: 10,000 hours. 10,000 hours before you can find your voice.
- 27:32Speaker 5: Okay. I was calculating that's not going to happen with
- 27:34Speaker 5: the open mic waiting around.
- 27:36Speaker 6: Especially here in L.A., it's so hard, you know.
- 27:39Speaker 7: So one week later, I bought a comedy club.
- 27:41Speaker 6: You bought your own comedy club?
- 27:43Speaker 7: I still have it. It's on Melrose, and Kawanga is
- 27:45Speaker 7: in Hollywood.
- 27:46Speaker 6: What's it called? It's called the Hollywood Comedy Club. Oh, okay.
- 27:49Speaker 5: So I wanted to have a place I can perform.
- 27:52Speaker 5: I saw this storefront on Melrose. It's in Lushmont. So
- 27:58Speaker 5: it's cute.
- 27:59Speaker 6: It's for lease.
- 28:00Speaker 5: I went in, there's a clothing store and they have
- 28:02Speaker 5: really ugly clothes. I'm like, okay, I'm taking the lease.
- 28:05Speaker 5: So two weeks later, I made it into a little
- 28:07Speaker 5: black theater, black box theater. And then I started to
- 28:11Speaker 5: host the open mic there. I will have a ton
- 28:13Speaker 5: of open mic a day, every hour. There's a different audience.
- 28:16Speaker 5: We have one committee on stage, eight people watching, and you,
- 28:20Speaker 5: you know, rotate. And I was the host. So when
- 28:22Speaker 5: you are hosting, you got to do all the dirty job.
- 28:24Speaker 5: I host 10 hours a day. I work like a
- 28:27Speaker 5: communist peasant.
- 28:30Speaker 7: And two months later, there's COVID.
- 28:31Speaker 4: And now at that point when you're doing that, what's
- 28:34Speaker 4: happening with your marriage then?
- 28:35Speaker 6: It's falling apart.
- 28:36Speaker 7: He would just tell me, I come home.
- 28:38Speaker 6: And you have a second child then?
- 28:39Speaker 7: Not yet.
- 28:40Speaker 5: Okay.
- 28:40Speaker 6: I wasn't planning.
- 28:41Speaker 7: Actually, it was a mistake.
- 28:42Speaker 6: Okay.
- 28:43Speaker 7: So I was just trying to see if I can
- 28:45Speaker 7: get a career.
- 28:45Speaker 4: It was a mistake, but my dad said, no, we're
- 28:47Speaker 4: going to say you were surprised.
- 28:49Speaker 7: Oh. And you are the joy to the world.
- 28:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:52Speaker 6: Both my sister and I were.
- 28:56Speaker 4: So you were not planning on having more with him
- 28:58Speaker 4: and you did get pregnant.
- 29:00Speaker 6: I did. And I remember that.
- 29:04Speaker 5: I wanted to keep the baby because I had really
- 29:06Speaker 5: bad experiences when I was in college. I was in
- 29:11Speaker 5: love with this guy and he was my fiance. And
- 29:14Speaker 5: we were going to get married and I found out
- 29:15Speaker 5: I was pregnant. And he basically pressured me to have
- 29:18Speaker 5: an abortion because he was cheating on me with another girl.
- 29:21Speaker 7: He was about to leave me. That's why. So I
- 29:24Speaker 7: didn't want to.
- 29:25Speaker 6: Now, where did you go to college? Kentucky. University of Kentucky.
- 29:30Speaker 6: How did you end up in Kentucky?
- 29:32Speaker 5: I remember I was applying for different schools and my
- 29:34Speaker 5: mother wasn't helping me.
- 29:36Speaker 6: But did you finish high school in China or you
- 29:38Speaker 6: finished here in California?
- 29:39Speaker 7: I finished high school in China.
- 29:40Speaker 6: Oh, and then... I applied myself. So from China, you
- 29:43Speaker 6: were applying to all the different schools in America. Yes,
- 29:45Speaker 6: I got my first offer from Kentucky.
- 29:47Speaker 5: And my mother wasn't applying for me to go, so
- 29:49Speaker 5: I just wanted to go to the first school so
- 29:50Speaker 5: I can go to America first and I can move.
- 29:52Speaker 6: To wherever I want. And then they gave you a scholarship?
- 29:54Speaker 5: I didn't get a scholarship and I worked different jobs to.
- 29:59Speaker 6: Pay for my school. And that's where you met this
- 30:01Speaker 6: guy and fell in love.
- 30:02Speaker 7: Yeah, I fell in love and he was a nice,
- 30:04Speaker 7: looks like a nice guy, but obviously.
- 30:06Speaker 4: So then when you were pregnant with your daughter this time,
- 30:10Speaker 4: you were like, no man's going to pressure me to do.
- 30:13Speaker 6: Something I don't want to do.
- 30:14Speaker 5: Even though I didn't plan for her, but I wanted
- 30:17Speaker 5: to make sure this baby, I'm going to be the
- 30:20Speaker 5: person to decide.
- 30:21Speaker 6: I'm keeping her.
- 30:22Speaker 7: I'm going to give her the life. She's not going
- 30:23Speaker 7: to fuck my life up.
- 30:24Speaker 5: If I kept my first baby, this guy pressured me
- 30:27Speaker 5: to not have it, and I regret it forever. It's
- 30:29Speaker 5: because it wasn't my choice. Because I'm a peasant. I
- 30:31Speaker 5: would work nine jobs to keep the baby alive. I
- 30:34Speaker 5: don't need a man to tell me, oh, we can't
- 30:36Speaker 5: afford it. I can afford it. That's the problem with me,
- 30:40Speaker 5: is that I hate that I respect what he wanted,
- 30:43Speaker 5: not what I wanted. Because I could afford a baby
- 30:46Speaker 5: on my own. Even though I didn't have money, but
- 30:48Speaker 5: I worked so hard, I would fucking get my shit together.
- 30:51Speaker 5: So this time, I'm like, no. I'm going to keep
- 30:53Speaker 5: this baby alive.
- 30:54Speaker 6: Do you know what that's, have you ever heard the expression,
- 30:57Speaker 6: do a Hail Mary? What's that? You know what that means?
- 31:01Speaker 4: That is, that would go among men talking. And I
- 31:06Speaker 4: remember I heard a very misogynistic LA, maybe he wasn't LA,
- 31:12Speaker 4: maybe it was syndicated, but when talk show before podcast,
- 31:15Speaker 4: there was this guy and I can't remember his name.
- 31:18Speaker 4: And he was so disgusting. But basically I would be
- 31:22Speaker 4: intrigued to watch, to listen to him because he would
- 31:25Speaker 4: be like preaching to men, like how to get a
- 31:29Speaker 4: hot woman to do what you want.
- 31:30Speaker 6: And he was just the most disgusting guy. Anyway. He's
- 31:33Speaker 6: a pickup artist. So, so he said, yeah.
- 31:35Speaker 4: So he said a Hail Mary is so a woman
- 31:38Speaker 4: that you, you know, don't want to spend the rest
- 31:40Speaker 4: of your life with her. You don't want her to
- 31:42Speaker 4: have the baby. He says she's pregnant. Then the thing
- 31:46Speaker 4: that you're supposed to do is say, you know, I
- 31:49Speaker 4: love you. We're going to spend the rest of our
- 31:51Speaker 4: lives together. This just isn't the right time.
- 31:54Speaker 7: That's what he said to me.
- 31:55Speaker 4: And then, and, and in a couple of years, we'll
- 31:58Speaker 4: have the money, we'll have the house, we'll have the kids.
- 32:01Speaker 4: So he convinces the woman to do something she doesn't
- 32:04Speaker 4: want to do and ending the pregnancy. And then, you know,
- 32:08Speaker 4: is nice to her, brings her some food after going
- 32:11Speaker 4: to the doctor, let a little time pass. And then, yeah,
- 32:15Speaker 4: And that's what he did.
- 32:16Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 32:17Speaker 6: That is horrible. I had a friend that that happened
- 32:19Speaker 6: to too. Very sad. She really believed him too. She
- 32:22Speaker 6: really was like, okay, yeah, you're right.
- 32:25Speaker 4: You know, and, but believe that this, that he loved
- 32:29Speaker 4: her and that they would just make it happen at
- 32:31Speaker 4: another time in the future.
- 32:32Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 32:33Speaker 5: Wow.
- 32:33Speaker 6: That's exactly what happened. I was very young.
- 32:35Speaker 5: I didn't know, but at that time I, I wanted
- 32:37Speaker 5: to give this baby the life that she deserves and
- 32:40Speaker 5: he deserves, whatever the gender is. So I didn't have
- 32:43Speaker 5: a plan B. I was already planning on leaving my ex.
- 32:47Speaker 5: So every day I work 10 hours and there's pandemic,
- 32:50Speaker 5: everything closed down.
- 32:51Speaker 6: And you're doing comedy at this time too?
- 32:53Speaker 7: Yes, that's when I started doing the open mic for
- 32:55Speaker 7: the club.
- 32:55Speaker 5: Oh, okay. And I remember that everything shut down during COVID.
- 32:59Speaker 5: And I go to my club, I talk to the
- 33:01Speaker 5: empty walls. I just read my jokes, like put it
- 33:04Speaker 5: in this audience. And I just was thinking, what happens
- 33:07Speaker 5: when this thing opens? Because I have to make it work,
- 33:10Speaker 5: make my career work fast.
- 33:11Speaker 6: How do I do that?
- 33:12Speaker 5: Then I started posting, I started writing jokes, and I
- 33:15Speaker 5: started to talk to them on stage to nobody. I
- 33:18Speaker 5: started filming them and posting them on TikTok. It was embarrassing,
- 33:20Speaker 5: because you are not funny, you're stupid. You have an accent.
- 33:23Speaker 5: You should go fuck yourself. And, you know, I'm like,
- 33:26Speaker 5: it's so rude. Like, are you a, are you a, like,
- 33:29Speaker 5: massage whore?
- 33:29Speaker 6: But I mean, I think your mom might have prepared
- 33:31Speaker 6: you for a TikTok comment.
- 33:32Speaker 7: Yeah, my mom's, everything, this, like, this girl's like, oh
- 33:34Speaker 7: my gosh, she was so pretty.
- 33:35Speaker 6: You're like, you're nothing, TikTokers. Yeah. You're nothing, you mean bots.
- 33:38Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 33:39Speaker 6: I grew up with a Chinese mom.
- 33:40Speaker 5: Yeah, and they'll say, oh my God, you were so
- 33:42Speaker 5: pretty before, before you, the baby, now you're so fat,
- 33:44Speaker 5: you're ugly. I'm like, you think I was pretty at
- 33:47Speaker 5: any point? Oh my gosh, do you want flowers? My
- 33:50Speaker 5: mom never told me that. She was thinking they are
- 33:51Speaker 5: mean to me.
- 33:52Speaker 7: I'm like, oh, honey.
- 33:53Speaker 5: So, I start posting everything. And slowly I found out
- 33:57Speaker 5: that the thing I talk about my real life, my struggle,
- 34:00Speaker 5: the culture differences, those are the stuff that worked, that
- 34:03Speaker 5: they go viral. So I think social media helped me
- 34:05Speaker 5: find my voice in a year rather than 10 years.
- 34:08Speaker 7: Because as a real comedian, it takes.
- 34:09Speaker 6: You 10 years to find your voice.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:11Speaker 4: So when I was starting, they would say, well, you
- 34:15Speaker 4: can't start stand-up in L.A. You need to go to
- 34:19Speaker 4: Chicago or New York where you can get up on stage.
- 34:23Speaker 4: three times a night for five years. Then you try
- 34:27Speaker 4: to get an agent. And they even said, don't let
- 34:30Speaker 4: anybody see you until you've done it for two years.
- 34:34Speaker 4: Don't let, don't invite agents or whatever, because they'll remember
- 34:38Speaker 4: you being like green and shitty and that'll stick in
- 34:40Speaker 4: their mind, even though in three years you're better.
- 34:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 34:43Speaker 4: And, I re so I was like, well, I grew
- 34:46Speaker 4: up in LA and I have friends I can invite,
- 34:49Speaker 4: you know, and family that want, that are encouraging me
- 34:52Speaker 4: to do standup and want to see the standup. And
- 34:54Speaker 4: that's even back then I realized there is no standup
- 34:58Speaker 4: comedy is not becoming an, you know, a neurosurgeon where
- 35:03Speaker 4: you go to college and you do, then you do
- 35:05Speaker 4: your OR, then you do, you know, it's, there's different ways.
- 35:09Speaker 4: And especially in 2025 for funny people to shine, which
- 35:13Speaker 4: I love the best part about social media. The worst
- 35:17Speaker 4: part is you're fat, you're ugly, you know, you're a
- 35:21Speaker 4: loser or whatever. That's the worst part. But if you
- 35:24Speaker 4: can get to a place where that doesn't affect you
- 35:28Speaker 4: as much, the, it is so great because you don't
- 35:32Speaker 4: need to go out and You know, you'd have to
- 35:35Speaker 4: walk yourself to the car alone and something could happen
- 35:38Speaker 4: or these male comedians would act like they want to
- 35:40Speaker 4: help you and they really want to fuck you.
- 35:42Speaker 6: All these things.
- 35:44Speaker 4: Nothing beats a live audience, but it is a great
- 35:47Speaker 4: way to test what is funny or what it's not.
- 35:50Speaker 4: Or when I do this podcast, you know, in deciding
- 35:54Speaker 4: what clip to cut. I'll wake up first thing in
- 35:58Speaker 4: the morning, read the YouTube comments, and people going, I
- 36:01Speaker 4: died laughing when da-da-da-da. And then I'm like, okay, I
- 36:03Speaker 4: think that might be it. And then sometimes it goes great,
- 36:06Speaker 4: and other times I'm like, why didn't that thing go?
- 36:08Speaker 6: All right, next one, next one, you know.
- 36:10Speaker 4: And then sometimes I'll take that funny story that I
- 36:13Speaker 4: didn't even think was funny that I said on the
- 36:15Speaker 4: show and put that into a stand-up.
- 36:17Speaker 6: So there's so many different ways.
- 36:20Speaker 4: And your story is obviously extremely unique and determined and...
- 36:26Speaker 4: Love the story of, you know, an immigrant who sees
- 36:29Speaker 4: the opportunity and.
- 36:30Speaker 6: Just won't stop. Like, that's just amazing.
- 36:33Speaker 4: And so then you kind of realized the things that
- 36:37Speaker 4: did better were... we're saying the cultural differences, which is
- 36:41Speaker 4: so true because it's the most universal. It's like why
- 36:44Speaker 4: the COVID jokes were the best.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:47Speaker 4: Because everybody could relate to mocking the person who's driving
- 36:51Speaker 4: in their car with the windows up and a mask.
- 36:53Speaker 4: I think every comedian said that, you know, and then
- 36:56Speaker 4: it's that type of thing. So, Okay, so continue. So
- 37:01Speaker 4: you started to do that and you started to get
- 37:03Speaker 4: some traction.
- 37:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I really believe that I found my voice. Like
- 37:06Speaker 5: you said, you know, the audience were like, oh my,
- 37:08Speaker 5: I died laughing at that. You're like, okay, this is clicking.
- 37:11Speaker 5: And when you are talking about the story to your friend,
- 37:13Speaker 5: you didn't even try. And people just love it so much.
- 37:15Speaker 5: Then it becomes such an organic, great style of bit.
- 37:18Speaker 6: Yeah, I would always tell people that too.
- 37:20Speaker 4: I'm like, if you are just starting and you want
- 37:22Speaker 4: to be funny, whatever that might be. Maybe that's on Substack.
- 37:25Speaker 4: Maybe that's just in a podcast. Maybe that's writing. Maybe
- 37:28Speaker 4: that's just telling a joke or doing a TikTok thing.
- 37:31Speaker 4: I'm like, it is when you're hanging out with your
- 37:33Speaker 4: friends and you're just telling something and they're laughing. And
- 37:36Speaker 4: then my friends would learn and they'd be.
- 37:37Speaker 6: Like, write it down.
- 37:39Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 37:39Speaker 6: Write it down.
- 37:40Speaker 4: And now like on the phone in my notes, I'll
- 37:42Speaker 4: be like, that was really funny. Like I should work
- 37:44Speaker 4: on that and da, da, da. So it is very
- 37:47Speaker 4: much when you are a naturally funny person, which you are.
- 37:52Speaker 4: You got to have that, but then you've got to
- 37:54Speaker 4: have the tools and the determination, but.
- 38:00Speaker 6: You can get better.
- 38:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:02Speaker 6: Like people say, oh, no one can teach comedy. No,
- 38:04Speaker 6: you can.
- 38:06Speaker 4: There is like a cadence and a way of writing
- 38:09Speaker 4: that's better, and there is a formula to it. But
- 38:12Speaker 4: what's great is that it's creative and everybody, you have
- 38:15Speaker 4: your own point of view, and that's when someone pops
- 38:18Speaker 4: with their own point of view.
- 38:19Speaker 5: Like, oh.
- 38:20Speaker 7: When you are organic and you're not pandering to anyone.
- 38:22Speaker 5: Yeah. Especially as an Asian female Chinese comedian, at the
- 38:26Speaker 5: beginning of my career, only Chinese people wanted to listen
- 38:29Speaker 5: to me, but I don't pander to them.
- 38:31Speaker 7: And they hate me.
- 38:32Speaker 6: They talk shit about me.
- 38:33Speaker 5: But slowly I built my voice as authentic and now
- 38:35Speaker 5: they like me. And now I have my audience are
- 38:38Speaker 5: not just Asians. I have everyone who likes me because
- 38:41Speaker 5: I'm not pandering to a certain person for them to
- 38:43Speaker 5: buy a ticket because I look like them.
- 38:46Speaker 7: My suffering and my joy is universal.
- 38:49Speaker 5: Being a daughter, being a mother, being the eldest daughter
- 38:53Speaker 5: is universal. I'm just a human. I happen to be
- 38:57Speaker 5: yellow and I happen to be a woman. And I
- 38:59Speaker 5: felt that I was so blessed to have the chance
- 39:02Speaker 5: to post things on my social media.
- 39:03Speaker 6: I post three times a day.
- 39:05Speaker 5: I post all the way to the delivery room. I
- 39:07Speaker 5: was throwing up, morning sickness, posting. I was hugging while posting. nobody,
- 39:13Speaker 5: people tell me like, I'm just not like you.
- 39:14Speaker 7: I don't like to post. I'm like, you think I
- 39:16Speaker 7: like to post? Nobody likes to post.
- 39:18Speaker 4: And when people want to bag on influencers or anything
- 39:22Speaker 4: like that, like, oh, she's just an influencer. She's just,
- 39:24Speaker 4: you know, she just wears her outfits. I'm like, you
- 39:27Speaker 4: have no idea how much work that is and what
- 39:30Speaker 4: a pain in the ass it is yeah and like
- 39:32Speaker 4: there's nothing I like better than going to a party
- 39:35Speaker 4: and this doesn't even happen very often I wish it
- 39:37Speaker 4: happened more where they're like sometimes at the Hollywood party
- 39:40Speaker 4: you need to put your phone over there.
- 39:42Speaker 5: That's good I'm like thank you real conversation and I.
- 39:45Speaker 4: Don't feel like I'm missing opportunities that I should be
- 39:48Speaker 4: posting and I should be da da da da And yeah,
- 39:51Speaker 4: there's a certain point where I'm like, whatever, I'm just
- 39:53Speaker 4: not going to do it that much or whatever. But yeah,
- 39:59Speaker 4: like you have, people have no idea how much work
- 40:01Speaker 4: goes into it and how, just like any other art form.
- 40:07Speaker 6: Sometimes you don't just pop like Alex Earl after, you know,
- 40:10Speaker 6: doing it for six months.
- 40:11Speaker 4: It might take years, but as long as you're enjoying it,
- 40:15Speaker 4: same with standup, when someone would say, how long are
- 40:17Speaker 4: you going to give it? I'm like, Well, I get
- 40:19Speaker 4: really excited when I have a set. I get a
- 40:21Speaker 4: little nervous. I'm excited to do it. I feel good after.
- 40:24Speaker 4: I'll just do it for as long as I... But
- 40:27Speaker 4: you don't make any money out of it. Well, I
- 40:29Speaker 4: guess I'll just stop doing it when I don't enjoy
- 40:31Speaker 4: doing it anymore.
- 40:32Speaker 7: Yeah, that's about the joy it gives us.
- 40:34Speaker 6: It gives you a life.
- 40:35Speaker 7: It's my drug.
- 40:36Speaker 6: I feel alive.
- 40:37Speaker 7: I make people laugh. And I'm creating.
- 40:40Speaker 6: I love that. Did you have any.
- 40:43Speaker 4: other female stand-ups that along your journey or before you
- 40:48Speaker 4: even started that was like an inspiration or that you
- 40:50Speaker 4: really liked watching?
- 40:52Speaker 5: I feel I can be very real with you is
- 40:54Speaker 5: that it's very, very funny. The unfunny female comics, they
- 40:58Speaker 5: are very toxic towards me. The good ones, they are
- 41:01Speaker 5: so nice to me. The one who's successful, who made it,
- 41:05Speaker 5: who had their name, they were just extremely nice and
- 41:08Speaker 5: they have nothing to gain from being nice to me.
- 41:11Speaker 7: And it just, you always hear, oh, someone is big,
- 41:15Speaker 7: she's a diva.
- 41:15Speaker 5: But actually, my experiences are the comedians, the female comics
- 41:19Speaker 5: that are not funny, don't have a career, they would
- 41:22Speaker 5: just tell me that... You know, you are too loud.
- 41:25Speaker 5: Your accent is the problem. You're never going to make it. Or, like,
- 41:29Speaker 5: you can't dress up. You're too dressed up.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 41:32Speaker 6: You're too sexy. You're going to distract the audience.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Too loud.
- 41:34Speaker 5: Your accent is too thick. People can't understand you. You're
- 41:36Speaker 5: never going to make it. Or just they talk shit
- 41:39Speaker 5: about me.
- 41:40Speaker 6: I don't even.
- 41:40Speaker 7: And I would help if they talk shit.
- 41:42Speaker 6: But the ones.
- 41:44Speaker 7: people like you, people like Nikki Glaser, Margaret Cho, those, those,
- 41:48Speaker 7: those women, they are just like, you got a way
- 41:52Speaker 7: to help me.
- 41:53Speaker 5: Like Nikki Glaser, she was just, she introduced me. She
- 41:56Speaker 5: will try to give me as much attention and respect
- 41:59Speaker 5: when she introduced me. She'll spend two minutes to give
- 42:01Speaker 5: me an intro that she's running her set for Golden Globe.
- 42:04Speaker 5: I'm not going to give her anything for her career.
- 42:06Speaker 5: I can't give her shit, but she doesn't care. And
- 42:08Speaker 5: then Margaret Cho, she did my podcast and the, She
- 42:11Speaker 5: talked to me every time I post a photo, a
- 42:13Speaker 5: video that she think I need support.
- 42:16Speaker 7: She shared her story without talking to me, without anything.
- 42:18Speaker 7: And those are the women. And I messaged you and
- 42:22Speaker 7: you just respond, yes, come here. Let me get on
- 42:25Speaker 7: my show.
- 42:26Speaker 5: That's the love support I get is because you've been
- 42:29Speaker 5: through where I was. When you try to be good
- 42:31Speaker 5: and you try to become a good artist and people
- 42:35Speaker 5: try to take you down. And you've been through that.
- 42:37Speaker 5: And so you see me, you're like, I'm going to
- 42:38Speaker 5: give her a hand. But the people who never made it,
- 42:41Speaker 5: they are small and they want to drag you down.
- 42:43Speaker 7: It's so sad.
- 42:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it is unfortunate. But I always remember
- 42:47Speaker 4: that about Joan Rivers. She was just so lovely to
- 42:53Speaker 4: Margaret Cho, to myself. A few times I got to
- 42:57Speaker 4: meet her when we were both at E! And in
- 43:00Speaker 4: her documentary, she featured Kathy Griffin and Kathy Griffin loved
- 43:05Speaker 4: her and And she knew that she was still doing it.
- 43:08Speaker 4: And she, in it, was like, oh, my calendar used
- 43:11Speaker 4: to be full.
- 43:12Speaker 6: Now it's all Kathy. Kathy was, this is like, you know, 15,
- 43:15Speaker 6: 20 years ago. And I was like, oh.
- 43:18Speaker 4: I remember watching that, being younger, at the movie theater
- 43:21Speaker 4: while I was doing comedy works.
- 43:23Speaker 6: A piece of work. Yeah, a piece of work.
- 43:25Speaker 4: And I was like, wow, I wonder if that bothers her.
- 43:29Speaker 4: You know, that, and it didn't. Like, it didn't because she.
- 43:36Speaker 6: Loved it. And it's comedy. And she never turned out anything.
- 43:39Speaker 4: Like before the internet, she was doing like people's webisodes
- 43:43Speaker 4: when they were called a webisode, which today would be
- 43:45Speaker 4: the podcast, YouTube, whatever. If someone asked her, she'd be like, sure,
- 43:48Speaker 4: if I'm free that day, like I'm never going to
- 43:50Speaker 4: turn down any work because next week somebody may not
- 43:53Speaker 4: ask me. And it's like that humbleness of like actually.
- 43:57Speaker 6: Really loving the art of it.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:00Speaker 4: Is what, you know, keeps you in the game, the
- 44:03Speaker 4: longevity of it. That is, that is so lovely. So
- 44:07Speaker 4: you're pregnant with the second one. Are you still, when
- 44:11Speaker 4: you gave birth to your daughter, are you still with
- 44:13Speaker 4: your husband?
- 44:14Speaker 5: Um, no, we have, uh, it was, it's become very
- 44:17Speaker 5: ugly and he started just calling me names and tell
- 44:19Speaker 5: me I'll never make it. And it was just the,
- 44:22Speaker 5: A lot of mental abuse and verbal abuse. But the
- 44:24Speaker 5: problem is because I'm a Chinese girl from China, that
- 44:28Speaker 5: the verbal abuse is just very normal.
- 44:30Speaker 7: You got called ugly and stupid.
- 44:31Speaker 5: It's just because also in my culture, they don't compliment
- 44:34Speaker 5: the kids because we believe if you tell the kids
- 44:37Speaker 5: ugly names and call them ugly, the less envy from hell.
- 44:42Speaker 5: There's less devil envy them, so they won't be taken
- 44:46Speaker 5: from you. The more you say you're beautiful, you're precious,
- 44:49Speaker 5: they got taken by the devils because.
- 44:52Speaker 7: they got envy.
- 44:53Speaker 6: So like I felt.
- 44:54Speaker 4: So they think like if you tell your daughter she's
- 44:56Speaker 4: beautiful and boost her self-esteem, there's a higher chance that
- 45:00Speaker 4: something evil might happen, like a tragic accident and she'll
- 45:04Speaker 4: die young.
- 45:05Speaker 7: Yeah, because the devils want to take her. Because they
- 45:07Speaker 7: are envious, they want her.
- 45:09Speaker 6: What religion is that?
- 45:10Speaker 7: I think it's Buddhism. That is also Confucianism is very.
- 45:16Speaker 7: Women should be humble.
- 45:17Speaker 5: And if you love someone, like in Confucianism, they call
- 45:22Speaker 5: Jianlei my cheap wife or like Gower my dog of
- 45:26Speaker 5: a son. Someone refer their kids as humble, extremely humble
- 45:31Speaker 5: to show that I'm very humble about everything. It's just
- 45:36Speaker 5: extreme culture that I am used to that. So when
- 45:39Speaker 5: my husband, he calls me, you're so ugly, you're so.
- 45:42Speaker 7: Fat now, and you're not smart, you're not sharp.
- 45:45Speaker 6: I felt like mom.
- 45:47Speaker 7: I felt like I'm home again. I didn't feel that
- 45:51Speaker 7: he was foreign.
- 45:52Speaker 6: What did your mom think of this husband? Did she
- 45:55Speaker 6: like him?
- 45:55Speaker 7: She did not like him because he was 20 years
- 45:58Speaker 7: older than me.
- 45:59Speaker 5: But he looked so handsome. He looked like he was 40.
- 46:01Speaker 5: It didn't really matter to me.
- 46:04Speaker 7: And I thought she would like him because she just
- 46:06Speaker 7: wanted me to be rich.
- 46:07Speaker 5: And this guy is rich. But it turned out my mother,
- 46:10Speaker 5: she wanted me to be happy. And she thought that
- 46:12Speaker 5: I married him. for the status, for everything. But I
- 46:15Speaker 5: married him for her because she blamed that I spent
- 46:19Speaker 5: so much money because the first year tuition she paid
- 46:21Speaker 5: for and I just felt guilty for going to America.
- 46:25Speaker 7: So I wanted to pay off her debt. I wanted
- 46:27Speaker 7: to help her.
- 46:28Speaker 5: So it was just a very sad little love story
- 46:32Speaker 5: between a mother and daughter that she wanted me to
- 46:34Speaker 5: be happy. She wanted me to find a man my age.
- 46:37Speaker 5: We can develop something together. But I saw she just
- 46:40Speaker 5: resent me for spending her money and I saw she
- 46:42Speaker 5: wanted me to pay her the money back I didn't
- 46:45Speaker 5: know she just want me to be happy and she
- 46:47Speaker 5: can't say it either because she can't say it she
- 46:49Speaker 5: cannot say it it's a Chinese mom just don't say
- 46:52Speaker 5: I love you I think the moment they tell their
- 46:54Speaker 5: child I love you is the moment they die so
- 46:56Speaker 5: they can't say it right now.
- 46:58Speaker 6: Really has she said it yet no.
- 47:00Speaker 7: No she can't she goes what about to your kids.
- 47:03Speaker 5: As the mom say I love you she goes you
- 47:06Speaker 5: fat you know she I love you she goes I
- 47:11Speaker 5: love you ugly Like, she can't say it. She tell
- 47:14Speaker 5: my daughter she's beautiful because, like, she's so pretty. She
- 47:17Speaker 5: look like your ex.
- 47:20Speaker 6: So they can be a nice grandma.
- 47:22Speaker 7: Oh, nice grandma, for sure.
- 47:23Speaker 6: Oh, that's good.
- 47:24Speaker 7: Just very evil mom. Yeah, she's so funny. She give
- 47:29Speaker 7: me so much materials. So it's great.
- 47:32Speaker 6: So, okay, so how do you tell the husband we're
- 47:35Speaker 6: done done? I remember....
- 47:39Speaker 5: It was a big deal for me is when I
- 47:41Speaker 5: was passed as a love factor.
- 47:42Speaker 7: I mean, as an open mic-er, that's.
- 47:43Speaker 5: A big deal.
- 47:44Speaker 6: So now, where were you living in L.A.
- 47:46Speaker 4: With the husband and the two babies while you're building
- 47:50Speaker 4: this comedy club?
- 47:51Speaker 7: So we.
- 47:52Speaker 5: He was wealthy, so he bought, like, three, four houses.
- 47:55Speaker 5: One of the houses, we rented out the restaurant. One
- 47:57Speaker 5: of the houses was in West Hollywood, which I think
- 48:00Speaker 5: is very close. Orlando.
- 48:01Speaker 7: It's walking distance.
- 48:03Speaker 6: Yeah, I love that.
- 48:03Speaker 5: So I remember I got passed at the Love Factory,
- 48:06Speaker 5: and I was so excited.
- 48:08Speaker 4: For Poulet, that means that now she can be on
- 48:11Speaker 4: a list to be booked for spots.
- 48:14Speaker 5: As an open maker, that's... I mean, it took me
- 48:16Speaker 5: two and a half years. That was a dream.
- 48:20Speaker 7: But I remember he said, I was.
- 48:22Speaker 7: Getting my hair done, dressing up.
- 48:24Speaker 4: I have to ask one thing. Do you think these
- 48:26Speaker 4: other comics were resentful? Because in their eyes, it.
- 48:29Speaker 6: Seems like, oh, look how quickly she went.
- 48:32Speaker 4: And do you think that they also, not knowing how
- 48:36Speaker 4: hard you were working, and they probably were not working
- 48:40Speaker 4: that hard, do you think they were saying, oh, it's
- 48:43Speaker 4: only because she's an Asian woman?
- 48:45Speaker 7: Yeah, because she's Asian in the diversity.
- 48:47Speaker 5: That's why she won the diversity lottery. But I wasn't
- 48:52Speaker 5: one who can sell a ticket. I had a million
- 48:54Speaker 5: followers on TikTok. They have no followers. Right.
- 48:56Speaker 6: All my jokes are my jokes.
- 48:57Speaker 4: The thing is, yeah, it can only, whether you're a
- 49:00Speaker 4: nepo baby or there is, or they're looking for a
- 49:04Speaker 4: certain look or type, that can only take you so
- 49:07Speaker 4: far in this business.
- 49:08Speaker 6: No one's going to continue. It's like when people talk
- 49:10Speaker 6: about Kim Kardashian. Oh, she had a sex tape.
- 49:11Speaker 4: I'm like, do you think a million people are buying
- 49:13Speaker 4: skims because she fucked Ray J on tape 15 years ago?
- 49:17Speaker 6: I think she's doing okay. I don't think.
- 49:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 49:20Speaker 4: People are going to continue to watch her on a
- 49:22Speaker 4: new show with um ryan murphy because like so what
- 49:26Speaker 4: like you know at a certain point maybe something might
- 49:30Speaker 4: help get you there But you're not going to stay
- 49:32Speaker 4: there unless you're talented.
- 49:35Speaker 7: I think Kris Jenner is one of the best business
- 49:37Speaker 7: women in the world. She is brilliant.
- 49:40Speaker 5: And the thing about her kids is that it doesn't
- 49:43Speaker 5: matter what you say about them. They are extremely authentic.
- 49:46Speaker 5: They own their mistakes. You can shame them, but they
- 49:50Speaker 5: own everything. And that's what I feel like I understand
- 49:55Speaker 5: them more. It's obvious they are great business women.
- 49:58Speaker 6: Yeah. So sorry, so go back. So you get passed
- 50:00Speaker 6: at the comedy store.
- 50:01Speaker 7: I'm sorry, at the Laugh Factory.
- 50:04Speaker 6: You're still with the mean husband. Doing my makeup and hair.
- 50:07Speaker 5: And he told me that, you know, do you remember
- 50:09Speaker 5: you told me when you were a little kid, you stuttered, right?
- 50:12Speaker 7: I said, yes, but I don't stutter anymore.
- 50:14Speaker 6: He said, no, no, no.
- 50:15Speaker 7: I was reading an article.
- 50:17Speaker 5: It says that if you do a big performance when
- 50:20Speaker 5: you are an adult, you just start to stutter again
- 50:23Speaker 5: because you are still nervous.
- 50:24Speaker 6: If you do a big what? Big performance. Oh, big performance.
- 50:28Speaker 4: So he's trying to psych you out before you perform
- 50:30Speaker 4: that night.
- 50:31Speaker 5: He said, I think you should not go tonight because
- 50:33Speaker 5: you're going to stutter and it'll be a joke.
- 50:35Speaker 7: It'll be so embarrassing. You'll probably want to kill yourself
- 50:37Speaker 7: after that.
- 50:37Speaker 4: For your first night of doing a regular show at
- 50:40Speaker 4: the Laugh Factory.
- 50:41Speaker 7: I said, I don't stutter anymore. He goes, you don't
- 50:44Speaker 7: stutter anymore?
- 50:45Speaker 6: I started stuttering.
- 50:46Speaker 5: I got so angry. I said, I don't stutter. And
- 50:49Speaker 5: he started stuttering like me. I just lost my shit
- 50:53Speaker 5: and I slapped him. The moment I slapped him, he
- 50:55Speaker 5: grabbed my hair, and he choked me. He dragged me
- 50:57Speaker 5: to the sink, and he started choking me. The moment
- 50:59Speaker 5: he started choking me, I took a cutting board and
- 51:01Speaker 5: smashed his head. So, like, I understand physical abuse. When
- 51:06Speaker 5: some men punch me, I'm going to strike and beat
- 51:08Speaker 5: them up.
- 51:08Speaker 6: And where are the two babies at this point?
- 51:10Speaker 7: My mother had them in the other room in the house.
- 51:13Speaker 6: And you're about to go do a funny set. Downstairs, yeah.
- 51:17Speaker 5: So he basically grabbed my, because he's.
- 51:19Speaker 6: Not a violent person. When you say downstairs, wait, you
- 51:21Speaker 6: were at your house when this happened.
- 51:22Speaker 5: Yes, yes.
- 51:22Speaker 4: But you had to go down the street to the
- 51:24Speaker 4: laugh factor to perform that night.
- 51:25Speaker 6: I was downstairs getting ready. How much time between this
- 51:28Speaker 6: incident and you going on stage? It was around 30 minutes. Oh,
- 51:31Speaker 6: my God. I still performed.
- 51:34Speaker 5: And I remember that he choked me. He never touched
- 51:38Speaker 5: me because he's like a mousy person. He's not physically violent.
- 51:42Speaker 5: Because I slapped him. So as a man, he was like, oh,
- 51:44Speaker 5: my God. I smashed him with the cutting board. My mother,
- 51:48Speaker 5: she just, she heard something. She ran downstairs and she
- 51:50Speaker 5: took a big vase and she smashed it on him.
- 51:53Speaker 5: She goes, I'm going to fucking kill you. Don't you
- 51:55Speaker 5: fucking touch my daughter, you piece of shit. And she
- 51:58Speaker 5: chased at him with a knife and he left. And
- 52:02Speaker 5: then I filed for divorce next day. Wow. Yeah.
- 52:08Speaker 6: Did you get a lawyer or did it yourself? I
- 52:09Speaker 6: got a lawyer.
- 52:11Speaker 5: He wanted to get me back. He thought it was
- 52:13Speaker 5: a joke. I said, no, no, it's not a joke.
- 52:16Speaker 5: I don't play with this. You don't touch me. Then
- 52:19Speaker 5: I realized he thought I would be okay with that
- 52:22Speaker 5: because I took all the verbal abuse. But for me,
- 52:25Speaker 5: because I'm traumatized, I didn't know that was abuse.
- 52:28Speaker 7: But I know hitting, striking is abuse.
- 52:31Speaker 6: Are you almost grateful that it went to that place?
- 52:34Speaker 5: If he still called me fat and ugly, I'm still
- 52:35Speaker 5: with him. Yeah, I'm so happy.
- 52:38Speaker 3: I just.
- 52:39Speaker 6: That it crossed that line.
- 52:40Speaker 5: It crossed that line. And I filed a divorce. And
- 52:43Speaker 5: he basically made a deal with me. He goes, you know,
- 52:45Speaker 5: if you want to see the kids, I'm not giving
- 52:49Speaker 5: you any child support. Nothing. Because we got married in China.
- 52:52Speaker 5: He's also Chinese. I said, listen, I make it very
- 52:55Speaker 5: easy for you. I don't want to drag this down
- 52:56Speaker 5: with you for two, three years. Because I don't have money.
- 52:58Speaker 5: I don't have time.
- 52:59Speaker 6: You got money. You got time. You are retired.
- 53:00Speaker 7: I don't have any money. I don't have no time.
- 53:03Speaker 6: I have to work every day.
- 53:04Speaker 5: So... I wanted two kids. I want no child support,
- 53:07Speaker 5: no spousal support. I want you to sign the divorce
- 53:09Speaker 5: paper right now. And he did it. And then I
- 53:13Speaker 5: had to figure out how do I raise my kids.
- 53:15Speaker 5: So we had to- Now.
- 53:16Speaker 6: What year was this?
- 53:17Speaker 5: That was 2020, I think that 2020, 2021, 2020, right
- 53:24Speaker 5: early spring 2021.
- 53:26Speaker 6: So things are just starting to open up. People are
- 53:29Speaker 6: just able to go out.
- 53:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 53:31Speaker 6: Oh my God.
- 53:33Speaker 5: So I had nothing. I downgraded and I started selling
- 53:35Speaker 5: my jewelry. All the money I saved.
- 53:39Speaker 6: You sold the expensive jewelry.
- 53:40Speaker 5: All of my jewelry and my bags. And then I
- 53:44Speaker 5: made some money. I made around like a.
- 53:45Speaker 7: $ 700, 000.
- 53:47Speaker 5: $ 700, 000? My whole life saving before I met him. Because
- 53:50Speaker 5: I quit my job after I married him. Because he's like,
- 53:53Speaker 5: you should not be working.
- 53:54Speaker 6: But I mean, the jewelry in the bags, you're saying
- 53:55Speaker 6: you made $ 700, 000?
- 53:56Speaker 5: No, no.
- 53:56Speaker 6: Those are just.
- 53:58Speaker 5: The $ 700, 000 went to the house that I put part
- 54:00Speaker 5: of the house down payment.
- 54:02Speaker 7: So he want me to pay him half the house
- 54:04Speaker 7: to buy him out.
- 54:05Speaker 5: So I had to mortgage the house to pay him
- 54:08Speaker 5: another like a million.
- 54:10Speaker 6: And I'm paying like.
- 54:11Speaker 4: Were any of the attorneys like, fuck this guy, you
- 54:13Speaker 4: could do better than this?
- 54:14Speaker 5: They hate that so much... It's insane. And I had
- 54:18Speaker 5: to do a line of credit, which is extremely high.
- 54:21Speaker 5: I was paying 10 grand a month because I felt like...
- 54:24Speaker 5: I moved to a different house, a smaller house. That
- 54:26Speaker 5: is a house I put down payment for. I just
- 54:29Speaker 5: feel like the kids lost their dad.
- 54:32Speaker 6: I don't want them to lose the house.
- 54:33Speaker 1: So he.
- 54:35Speaker 6: Did he stay in America or go back to China?
- 54:37Speaker 5: He went back to China or Europe.
- 54:38Speaker 6: So he is not in their lives?
- 54:40Speaker 7: He sees them... I allow him to see them.
- 54:42Speaker 6: Now I'm doing better.
- 54:43Speaker 5: I said, they are going to find out who he
- 54:46Speaker 5: is when they grow up. I don't talk shit about
- 54:48Speaker 5: him in front of the kids because I don't want
- 54:49Speaker 5: to make them feel insecure about they are half.
- 54:52Speaker 6: Human, half bastard, you know?
- 54:54Speaker 5: I want them to find out what's wrong with this
- 54:56Speaker 5: man when they grow up. And it's, so he wants
- 54:58Speaker 5: to see them, he can see them. And I'm not
- 55:00Speaker 5: taking that away from him. But, uh, I remember that
- 55:05Speaker 5: the first time I made money, my mom and I,
- 55:07Speaker 5: we sell jewelries and I borrow money from my friends.
- 55:10Speaker 5: I'll give them my jewelry for two months. I'll borrow
- 55:13Speaker 5: 20 grand and then I'll give them the money back
- 55:16Speaker 5: and then I got my jewelry back.
- 55:18Speaker 7: Because I just, I sell to the real, real. It's
- 55:20Speaker 7: like I lose so much money on my jewelry and bags.
- 55:22Speaker 5: I just keep rotating, selling everything I have until one day, one.
- 55:27Speaker 7: Day I start selling my shows.
- 55:29Speaker 6: I start selling 50 tickets, 100 tickets, 200 tickets.
- 55:30Speaker 5: 500, 600, then I started to make some real money.
- 55:35Speaker 4: Was there a moment where you were like, I think
- 55:39Speaker 4: this is all going to work out. Like there was
- 55:41Speaker 4: a moment in your career and life that you were like,
- 55:45Speaker 4: I can breathe for a half a second.
- 55:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 55:47Speaker 6: Or has that come yet?
- 55:49Speaker 7: Yeah, it came, I think it was a few years ago,
- 55:50Speaker 7: a few years ago, cops, I sold out back-to-back shows
- 55:54Speaker 7: and then I got the money.
- 55:55Speaker 5: I said, I can pay my three years. I mean,
- 55:57Speaker 5: I can pay my three months mortgage. I don't have
- 56:00Speaker 5: to worry about next day. I didn't, I wasn't vain.
- 56:03Speaker 5: I'm always very down to earth. It's just that I
- 56:05Speaker 5: wanted the kids to stay in the house they used
- 56:08Speaker 5: to stay. I don't want too much to change. I
- 56:10Speaker 5: want them to stay in the same house and same
- 56:11Speaker 5: school because it's easier for them.
- 56:15Speaker 7: They don't have to see how I suffer.
- 56:16Speaker 5: You know, they just wanted to, I want them to
- 56:18Speaker 5: feel comfortable.
- 56:19Speaker 6: You still live in West Hollywood?
- 56:21Speaker 7: No, I moved to Arcadia near Pasadena.
- 56:23Speaker 5: Okay. Uh, We just bought a house in Austin, Texas.
- 56:26Speaker 5: So I want to move my residence to Texas. I
- 56:29Speaker 5: bought an apartment in Hollywood so I can stay here
- 56:32Speaker 5: when I'm in L.A. But we're going to move to
- 56:35Speaker 5: Austin for my residence, I think. I want to do
- 56:39Speaker 5: a ranch.
- 56:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:41Speaker 4: And so when you travel, because you have quite an
- 56:46Speaker 4: extensive tour, then your mom stays with the kids?
- 56:50Speaker 5: My mom stays with the kids. We have a mate
- 56:52Speaker 5: and she was there. Since my daughter was a baby,
- 56:57Speaker 5: and she knows my kids very well. She's a Chinese lady.
- 57:00Speaker 5: So she helped my mother with cleaning and cooking. My
- 57:03Speaker 5: mother takes the kids to school and everything. Whenever I'm
- 57:05Speaker 5: in California, I take my kids with me on the
- 57:08Speaker 5: road on the weekends. So they actually get on stage
- 57:10Speaker 5: and perform. My son and my daughter both get on stage.
- 57:13Speaker 5: They are six and four. They love the stage. They
- 57:15Speaker 5: really like to be on the stage and to talk
- 57:18Speaker 5: to the microphone. Because they see me doing TikTok live.
- 57:22Speaker 6: It's from live. There's always a phone. And they just,
- 57:25Speaker 6: they are familiar with it. I talk. They love to
- 57:28Speaker 6: talk and make people laugh.
- 57:30Speaker 4: And do you have any mom guilt about traveling so much?
- 57:33Speaker 7: I have a lot of mom guilt.
- 57:35Speaker 5: That's why I feel like I work so hard so
- 57:37Speaker 5: I can just start doing the big theaters.
- 57:39Speaker 7: I can do two theaters a month. So I don't
- 57:41Speaker 7: have to do every weekend.
- 57:42Speaker 6: Like two weekends a month.
- 57:43Speaker 5: Two weekends a month. So I can spend more time
- 57:45Speaker 5: with them. But you have to pay your dues. I mean,
- 57:48Speaker 5: you have to sell the clubs and over and over
- 57:51Speaker 5: so you can have the... You can have the market.
- 57:54Speaker 5: You can do theaters. That's why I work every weekend
- 57:58Speaker 5: because I want to get there in two years, not
- 58:00Speaker 5: in five years because I'll miss their childhood.
- 58:04Speaker 7: I have so much mom guilt. I really do.
- 58:07Speaker 5: Whenever I'm home, I come home. That's why as a mom,
- 58:10Speaker 5: we don't have a comedian life. We come home at two.
- 58:13Speaker 5: We wake up at seven.
- 58:15Speaker 6: You are a mom.
- 58:16Speaker 7: We wake up at seven.
- 58:17Speaker 6: There were many times I just remember... So hard sometimes, right?
- 58:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I just felt like my son, he said he
- 58:29Speaker 5: got bullied in school because people think he's slow. And
- 58:32Speaker 5: it makes me so sad because I don't have time
- 58:33Speaker 5: to help with his homework. My mom don't speak English.
- 58:36Speaker 5: My son's so smart. And I feel so bad that
- 58:39Speaker 5: people think he's stupid. So that's why I wanted to
- 58:42Speaker 5: move to Texas. Because my boyfriend's mom is going to
- 58:45Speaker 5: move down with us. And he's going to live with us.
- 58:47Speaker 5: We're going to work. I'm going to try to do
- 58:50Speaker 5: less shows. I'm going to find other ways to make
- 58:53Speaker 5: money to writing my TV show, writing my book. Yeah.
- 58:56Speaker 5: So I can be with them because there's nothing more
- 59:00Speaker 5: than being with them is everything.
- 59:02Speaker 6: They know it.
- 59:04Speaker 4: I don't think there's any two uh male stand-up comics
- 59:08Speaker 4: dads probably ever cried about not spending enough time.
- 59:13Speaker 6: With their kids so guilty.
- 59:15Speaker 4: Um you know my kids are grown now and but
- 59:20Speaker 4: still you you will question you know choices.
- 59:25Speaker 6: Did I do the right thing? But if I didn't
- 59:28Speaker 6: do this, I wouldn't be able to have gotten here. Yeah. And,
- 59:32Speaker 6: you know, you won't get that time back.
- 59:34Speaker 4: But when the opportunity is there, especially in entertainment, you can't,
- 59:39Speaker 4: you know, like I remember when I wrote my book,
- 59:41Speaker 4: there was a time where I'm like, oh, I would
- 59:43Speaker 4: have loved to have had this book deal when I
- 59:45Speaker 4: wasn't working on a TV show like Chelsea Lately, which
- 59:48Speaker 4: was five days a week, I would have loved to
- 59:50Speaker 4: have done a little.
- 59:51Speaker 6: Well, the offer's not there when you're a nobody.
- 59:53Speaker 4: The offer's there when you're working all week and then
- 59:56Speaker 4: you have to write the book on the weekends and maybe,
- 59:58Speaker 4: you know, five o'clock you go in the pool with
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: your kid or whatever.
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: And.
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: It's just.
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: It's so.
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: I mean, your story is like, I got a little
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: when we were on the boat with Dr.
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: Drew, which was like this afternoon boat trip.
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: And, but obviously I didn't get to know you and I,
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: but I saw your growth and I knew that you
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: were a hard worker. And I, I was like, oh,
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: I remember she said she, you know, had a son
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: and I wonder how she does all this.
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: And, but I knew you were a good mom.
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: I knew, you know, and if you have to make
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: the sacrifice, you have to, you cannot, you cannot, Do everything.
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: Yeah. Last Friday was the first time in my baby's
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: life I took them trick-or-treating. And I just, I don't want,
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: I did not schedule anything that weekend. I just know
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: I have to do it.
- 1:00:57Speaker 6: I have to.
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: And I took them to trick-or-treating. And then there was
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: other kids. And then my son came to me. He goes, Mom,
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: what do I do?
- 1:01:03Speaker 7: And I started to cry.
- 1:01:04Speaker 6: I said, you just.
- 1:01:06Speaker 7: Go there and say, trick-or-treat. And you take one candy.
- 1:01:09Speaker 7: You say, thank you.
- 1:01:10Speaker 6: And he said, thank you, mom.
- 1:01:11Speaker 7: I never done that.
- 1:01:12Speaker 6: I'm so excited.
- 1:01:13Speaker 7: Finally, I can be like other kids.
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: And my daughter, she went there and she tell me,
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: she come back to tell me what people said to her.
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: I just, I was, I felt so good. I said,
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: that's so worth it. That's, yes, we do need a
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: weekend's income, but you know what? I need to, I need,
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: they need to know how to trick or treat. They can't,
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: they can't be the only kid who don't know that.
- 1:01:30Speaker 6: Like, I feel so bad.
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: Well, you know, this is what is so great is
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: that you can be more selective after this tour and you.
- 1:01:39Speaker 6: Can, Turn things down. Yeah.
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: And you'll get to a place where that weekend or
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: whatever is not going to make or break your bank
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: or change your life. My dad would say it's not
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: going to change your lifestyle. One gig is not going
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: to give.
- 1:01:57Speaker 6: You a jet or whatever.
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: And you are going to have to say yes, no,
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: or change it or whatever. And you will never regret that.
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: like not doing that weekend in Dallas or whatever, if
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: there is some opportunity for you with your kids. And
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: so now tell me how you met your new love
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: of your life.
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: I met him last year on February in Austin, Texas.
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: He was filming my show. I hired his friend to
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: film my show, and they said they needed two cameras
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: to capture the crowds.
- 1:02:31Speaker 6: So he hired him.
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: I remember he was so handsome and sweet, and I
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: remember I gave all of the camera guys a merch
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: of mine, a hat. So he took a hat. It
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: was a funny hat. It said, Ass Pro Shop, with
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: my ass on it. But A-plus, Ass Pro Shop. And
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: I remember February, the first time I met him, and
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: around June, I came back to Austin. And he walked
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: into my green room wearing my hat.
- 1:02:56Speaker 7: And I'm like, hey, do you want a shot?
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: But he was, I think he had a crush on me,
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: but he felt, because he worked on my show, he
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: didn't want to be unprofessional.
- 1:03:05Speaker 7: He didn't want to ask me out.
- 1:03:06Speaker 6: So I said, I have to, I have to do it.
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: And then I remember this girl, the girl at the club,
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: she goes, oh my God, he's so hot. I want
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: to fuck him. I'm like, he is hot. And then
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: my other girl's like, he's so hot. I'm like, I
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: want to fuck him. They're like, you don't do that, though. Like,
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: you don't fuck guys on the road. I think I'm
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: just gonna.
- 1:03:25Speaker 6: That's only for the male comedians. Yeah, we actually don't
- 1:03:27Speaker 6: do it. We just are like, I just want to
- 1:03:30Speaker 6: get back to my room. And if you have kids,
- 1:03:32Speaker 6: you want the solid night's sleep.
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: That was always the.
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: Nice thing when they were little. I was like, I
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: kind of love this hotel room. No one's waking me
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: up at 6 a.m.
- 1:03:40Speaker 6: Or whatever. So go on.
- 1:03:42Speaker 7: So I told her, no, no, I can do it.
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: I'm a communist. My pussy belongs to the people. I'm
- 1:03:46Speaker 7: going to fuck him. I remember that I had to
- 1:03:49Speaker 7: convince him to fuck me because he won't do it.
- 1:03:51Speaker 7: He's a nice guy.
- 1:03:52Speaker 6: I had to have guys try to.
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: So we went to the Four Seasons in the lobby
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: and I said, hey, do you want to have a drink?
- 1:03:58Speaker 7: He's like, yeah, my name is Zayn. I said, whatever. Yeah.
- 1:04:01Speaker 5: I just look at his beautiful blue eyes and big eyelashes.
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: I'm just like, oh my God, he's so handsome. He's
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: so sweet.
- 1:04:07Speaker 7: And he didn't want me.
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: Now, had you dated much between the husband and him? No, nothing.
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: I have kind of dated some guy like for two weeks.
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: Okay. Not even for, it's like the guy want to
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: marry me after two weeks, like the love bombers. Oh, okay.
- 1:04:18Speaker 7: Which I just so turned off.
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: Okay. And he's literally, he just talk about his life
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: and I'm like, yeah, but do you want to go upstairs?
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: He's like, what do you do upstairs? I said, do
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: you want to have some tea to my room?
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: He's like, Okay. I said, yes.
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: So we went upstairs and I got in bed. I
- 1:04:36Speaker 5: got naked in bed. I just sitting in bed.
- 1:04:38Speaker 7: He's literally sitting on the couch. I said, hi.
- 1:04:40Speaker 6: He's like, hi.
- 1:04:43Speaker 7: He's like, do you want me to make some tea?
- 1:04:44Speaker 7: I said, I'm naked. He's like, I see. I'm like,
- 1:04:48Speaker 7: why are.
- 1:04:48Speaker 6: You covering your face?
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: He's like, yeah, you're naked. I said, we're going to
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: have sex. He's like, uh-huh. Yeah. But I don't think
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: you have a condom. I said, oh, I Uber Eats
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: condom right now. I also DoorDash the condom. Which one
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: ever come first? I did Uber Eats condom. He went
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: downstairs and he come back. He's like, you really got condoms?
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: I said, yeah.
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: He's like, okay. And we had sex. And then he
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: texted me. He's like, I will see you again. I
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: was like, okay. I didn't even respond to him. And
- 1:05:20Speaker 5: I just never talked to him again. I liked it.
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: He wanted to call me, but he didn't think I
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: wanted to talk to him again, because I never responded.
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: You just did a little thumbs up on the text?
- 1:05:29Speaker 6: A little heart. A little heart, okay. But nothing. Didn't respond.
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: So he wanted to talk to me, but he realized
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: I wasn't interested. He also thought that probably what I
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: do on the road, I just fuck guys on the road.
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: But he was the first guy, like I actually had
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: sex on the road. I just, I met a different guy.
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: He loved me later, and then I remember in September,
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: I came back to Austin, late September, and I I
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: saw him again. He said, I want to see you.
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: I said, I don't have time. I don't know if
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: you are working for my show. He goes, yes, my
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: friend and I are working on a show.
- 1:05:59Speaker 7: I'm like, okay, whatever.
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: So I saw him. I remembered how sweet he was.
- 1:06:03Speaker 5: And then I remember that after that, I kissed him.
- 1:06:07Speaker 5: And he said, I wanted to ask you on a
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: real date.
- 1:06:10Speaker 6: I said, okay.
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: So we went on a real date and he didn't
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: want to have sex. I'm like, I'm, I'm fucking you.
- 1:06:15Speaker 5: Like I'm, I'm fucking you.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: And then we had sex and I asked him, do
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: you like my big tits? He's like, I'm an ass man.
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: I was like, this guy's not going to go anywhere.
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: I mean, this guy's not going to go anywhere. He's cute,
- 1:06:29Speaker 5: but oh my God, either he's gay or autistic.
- 1:06:32Speaker 7: I don't know. He's, he's a good, I'm an ass man.
- 1:06:35Speaker 6: I'm like, okay.
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: And then he just literally, we, I flew him out
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: to film my show in, um, in, I think it
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: was Canada, five cities in five days, very tough, and
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: he was very sweet.
- 1:06:48Speaker 7: He didn't want to have sex with me.
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: He's like, I want to really date you, which means
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: that we need to get to know each other. We
- 1:06:53Speaker 5: need to become real friends. The sex is going to
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: be so destructive. I was so mad at him. I
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: was so angry. I was so pissed at him. I'm like,
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: you just don't want to fuck me.
- 1:07:02Speaker 7: You think I'm ugly. You don't want to fuck me.
- 1:07:04Speaker 7: You think I'm ugly and fat. That's what you think.
- 1:07:05Speaker 7: He's like, that's not it.
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: So he was just so different. And he also had
- 1:07:09Speaker 5: a corporate job before he started filming. He worked at
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: Tesla for five, six years. So he's a very nice man.
- 1:07:17Speaker 5: He's like a nice, normal guy.
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: He's a nice, normal, sweet guy.
- 1:07:21Speaker 7: He actually wanted to get to know me.
- 1:07:23Speaker 6: I was offended.
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: All my friends were like, I think he's a nice guy.
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: He's not laughing at me. He just wants more than
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: having sex.
- 1:07:28Speaker 6: You just weren't used to that. I wasn't used to it.
- 1:07:29Speaker 6: You weren't used to anyone being nice to you. No,
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: I wasn't.
- 1:07:32Speaker 7: I said, you want me? Just me? Without my body?
- 1:07:36Speaker 7: You just want me?
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: My annoying self?
- 1:07:39Speaker 7: He said, yes. I said, but I talk a lot.
- 1:07:42Speaker 7: He goes, I like to listen to you talk. I'm like,
- 1:07:44Speaker 7: what's wrong with you?
- 1:07:46Speaker 5: Then September, December, he asked me to his girlfriend. I said, yes,
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: I asked him to spend five days in LA with me.
- 1:07:55Speaker 5: I said, but you're going to stay in a hotel
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: because you can't live in my house. I don't want
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: you to meet my mom. He said, but what's the
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: real reason? I said, yes, I'm under house arrest for
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: my DUI.
- 1:08:04Speaker 7: I have anger alert.
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: In real life, I got a DOI last year.
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: Oh, you did? How did that happen?
- 1:08:11Speaker 7: I was drinking and I crashed in my car because
- 1:08:13Speaker 7: I fell asleep.
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: I was so tired. Also, I have bipolar, so I
- 1:08:19Speaker 5: forgot to eat sometimes. I overwork as a workaholic. I overwork,
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: I forgot to eat.
- 1:08:23Speaker 6: So were you coming back from a show or something?
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: Actually.
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: I did a lot of shows that week and the
- 1:08:29Speaker 5: month before. And then I did a Sunday, I think,
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: at the Ice House. So after the show, I went
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: to drinking with some friends. And I haven't been eating
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: for probably two weeks.
- 1:08:42Speaker 6: Oh, God.
- 1:08:42Speaker 7: Just drinking, no food.
- 1:08:44Speaker 6: And then I just passed out.
- 1:08:45Speaker 7: Yeah, I fell asleep in the car. It was a
- 1:08:47Speaker 7: Tesla X. I forgot to use a self-drive. And my
- 1:08:50Speaker 7: car crashed into two trees. I killed two trees.
- 1:08:54Speaker 6: And then is that when you woke up when you
- 1:08:56Speaker 6: hit the tree? Oh, I woke up.
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: The car was flipped three times. It was, Oh my God,
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: were you hurt? The car was totaled. But they took
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: me to the hospital, they scanned me. They think I
- 1:09:05Speaker 5: definitely have some internal bleeding. It turns out I was harmless.
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: I had some glasses on my face, tiny little pieces.
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: And I.
- 1:09:12Speaker 7: Maybe.
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: Because you were past it, because they say sometimes like,
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: you know, if you saw like a truck coming at you,
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: your whole body would tense up.
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: Like a cat.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: And so then when you get hit, the injuries are
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: much worse. Then if you were.
- 1:09:27Speaker 6: Out of it or asleep or under, more relaxed as
- 1:09:30Speaker 6: you are intoxicated.
- 1:09:32Speaker 7: I think so.
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: Oh my God. So then the police were at the
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: At the hospital?
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: Yeah, they got my blood test, and I think I
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: was definitely, there was a lot of blood, whatever. So
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: I got a good attorney, so I was able to
- 1:09:43Speaker 5: get a good deal. I got house arrest.
- 1:09:44Speaker 6: But then you couldn't do stand-up, or you could because
- 1:09:47Speaker 6: that was work? I did a podcast, too.
- 1:09:49Speaker 7: I went on shows.
- 1:09:50Speaker 6: So as long as it was work, you could do it.
- 1:09:54Speaker 7: As work, I can have that excused, and I had
- 1:09:56Speaker 7: a podcast.
- 1:09:57Speaker 6: But you weren't able to drive? I can't drive.
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: I don't want to drive either. I'm always texting anyway.
- 1:10:02Speaker 5: So now my man drives me around. So the first week,
- 1:10:05Speaker 5: we are dating.
- 1:10:06Speaker 6: So you don't drive, but will you ever drive again
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: if it's self-driving?
- 1:10:09Speaker 7: I will. I will.
- 1:10:11Speaker 6: But can you legally drive right now?
- 1:10:13Speaker 7: Right now, no. But next year, I can. I got
- 1:10:15Speaker 7: my license back.
- 1:10:15Speaker 6: And was your mom mad at you for that?
- 1:10:17Speaker 7: No, she was so happy I was alive.
- 1:10:19Speaker 6: Oh, so she wasn't then... No, she.
- 1:10:21Speaker 7: Was actually so mad. She goes, you know what? You
- 1:10:24Speaker 7: are not heard. Fuck the car.
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: You are not heard.
- 1:10:27Speaker 6: But she wasn't mad that you drank?
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: No.
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: She just know that I was going through a lot.
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: That's actually my ex. He end up fucking me up.
- 1:10:34Speaker 5: He went behind my back and sold all of my
- 1:10:38Speaker 5: stuff and my clothing, my archives, my shoes, my bags,
- 1:10:42Speaker 5: jewelries in China without my knowledge. I found that out.
- 1:10:45Speaker 7: And I was screaming and yelling at him earlier. I
- 1:10:47Speaker 7: was in a bad place.
- 1:10:48Speaker 6: Just in a horrible spot. It was in a horrible spot.
- 1:10:50Speaker 5: But the first week of dating, his girlfriend and my
- 1:10:53Speaker 5: boyfriend came to take me to jail.
- 1:10:55Speaker 6: And then he.
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: As part of your DUI, did they make you go.
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: To AA or anything?
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: Yes, I go to AA. And I like the guys
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: at AA. There's a lot of old guys at the
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: AA class I go. They're all in their 70s. Yeah?
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: They've been there for 30 years.
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: And I'm the only... woman there.
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: I remember thinking that I remember somebody saying, oh, you know,
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: the best AA is at Robertson or whatever, you know,
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: in the 90s. A lot of agents go there. And
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: I remember seriously considering going to AA.
- 1:11:30Speaker 6: For the stage time. That's awesome.
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: Because you could get up and tell a story and,
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: you know, and oftentimes they, a lot of people, they
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: tell the same story for 30 years.
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: They get pretty good at it. They have punchlines. It's like,
- 1:11:41Speaker 6: it's a good training. So do you speak at the meetings?
- 1:11:46Speaker 7: We share a little bit so it's like everyone share a.
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: Little story so I don't do it because I don't
- 1:11:52Speaker 5: want to because you have those pharmacists the assistants they
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: go there they dress up they're like trying to be
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: cute and funny I don't want to steal their spotlight
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: you know I just want them to shine I'm just
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: like a mop in the corner be like yep I
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: am a drunk hoe I listen to them I just
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: want to see them getting on stage and they got
- 1:12:08Speaker 5: all dolled up they drive they wear it's so.
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: Cute So just tell everybody, like, where the next spots
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: are going to be, where they can find you. The
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: show is on Hulu, premieres this Saturday, November 8th.
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: And I just know my Juicy Scoopers are going to
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: love it.
- 1:12:25Speaker 7: I can't wait.
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: And.
- 1:12:28Speaker 6: Congrats with your man.
- 1:12:30Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 1:12:31Speaker 6: And where are you guys now in your love journey?
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: We are getting our house in Austin. We just got
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: the apartment in Hollywood. So I'm going to sell my
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: house in Arcadia, Pasadena area. And we're very excited to
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: have our new life. And he's also my tour manager.
- 1:12:48Speaker 5: So he produced my podcast. He's my full-time slave. which
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: I'm so lucky to have him. And I'm in Magoobies
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: at Maryland next week. I'm in Chicago and Philly and Singapore, Hawaii, Honolulu, Maui,
- 1:13:04Speaker 5: all over the place, San Jose, and JowianComedy.com.
- 1:13:07Speaker 6: When you go to Hawaii, can your kids... I'm taking them, actually.
- 1:13:10Speaker 7: I'm taking my mom and kids for 10 days.
- 1:13:12Speaker 6: Oh, that's so.
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: I'm so glad you're making vacations. I remember, like, when
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: I was doing Chelsea Lately and I got a gig, like,
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: somewhere around Phoenix. I said, they said, oh, you can
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: stay at this hotel, whatever. And I go, could they
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: find me the hotel that has the water slide? So
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: the kids came and they were able to go the
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: water slide. But then my younger son at the time
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: wasn't tall enough. And so we got up to the
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: top and I was like, oh, shit. And I'm like
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: trying to spike up his hair, getting up the line.
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: He's so cute. And I felt like it was like
- 1:13:45Speaker 6: a DUI test.
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: Like, I was like, just don't look him in the
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: eye and just go sit down real quick before the
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: lifeguard realizes you're too little.
- 1:13:53Speaker 6: To go on this. And he's like, okay, okay.
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: And then the guy's like, excuse me, sir, you know,
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: can you come.
- 1:13:59Speaker 6: Over here and stand?
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: And he looks at me, he's like, and he was
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: so mad because his older brother couldn't go down the
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: water slide.
- 1:14:04Speaker 6: I'm like, next time, you know, we then, we did.
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: What a real fun was we, I did the Atlantis
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: casino and we went and then everyone was tall enough
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: to go on every ride there.
- 1:14:16Speaker 6: And we went on that water slide. So it was like,
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: I was always like, how I was like feeling my age.
- 1:14:20Speaker 6: I'm like, I don't know how many other.
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: Comedians you have that are like just trying to like
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: book things around like amusement parks and like miniature.
- 1:14:27Speaker 6: Golf and bowling.
- 1:14:28Speaker 7: I always do San Francisco because we got the zoo
- 1:14:30Speaker 7: and the Legoland.
- 1:14:31Speaker 5: I know.
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: And then when my son, I remember I took my
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: son and we went to the Alcatraz thing when he
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: was older, like when he was like 10 or 11,
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: that was like such a fun tour.
- 1:14:39Speaker 6: And yeah, San Francisco is fun. There's a lot to
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: do there. We always book around. I know you're doing
- 1:14:45Speaker 6: a New York in December.
