- 0:00KARA: So, guys, I'm on the battle to get new Cochlear
- 0:02implants. And this has been going on for a while.
- 0:05DANI: Yeah. Pretty much the whole time we've been doing
- 0:07the pod, I feel.
- 0:07KARA: Pretty much. But I have to submit
- 0:11a new request this year because I'm now on my
- 0:13wife's insurance rather than my old work insurance.
- 0:16And also things have changed because the warranty
- 0:19has finally expired. And my current Cochlear
- 0:21implants are now considered obsolete. Which is
- 0:23great because that means the new insurance will
- 0:26be more likely to approve it.
- 0:26DANI: But does it feel
- 0:28great for them to say the tech that your body
- 0:31depends on is obsolete now?
- 0:31KARA: Yeah. I'm like, wow,
- 0:34it's that old, huh?
- 0:34DANI: Yeah.
- 0:34KARA: Thanks, guys. Maybe
- 0:37you should have given it to me before it went
- 0:38obsolete.
- 0:38DANI: What an idea.
- 0:38KARA: Crazy. So when you get
- 0:41new Cochlear implants, usually what you do is
- 0:44you can either self pay or pay fully out of
- 0:46pocket, which is like $20,000 if you have the
- 0:48money. Yeah. Or you can submit and then get
- 0:51reimbursed through your insurance and whatnot.
- 0:54And you're submitted through Cochlear. And then
- 0:56Cochlear has a representative that works with
- 0:58you personally and then also works with insurance.
- 1:02DANI: Okay. So in theory, it should be a smoother process
- 1:06because of that person.
- 1:06KARA: Yes, but you also need
- 1:09to get letters from your ENT and then also your
- 1:12audiologist proving that you are still deaf and
- 1:15that you still need them.
- 1:15DANI: Just in case a medical
- 1:18miracle happened. God intervened and decided
- 1:22to change your entire life.
- 1:22KARA: Exactly.
- 1:22DANI: Happens
- 1:27all the time.
- 1:27KARA: Remember, I got my first surgery
- 1:29when I was five on my right ear and the second
- 1:31when I was 16 on my left. So I get an email from
- 1:34Cochlear, the Cochlear representative, and they
- 1:36go, you submitted two requests, your right ear
- 1:39and your left ear, but you don't have a left
- 1:41implant. And I go, yes, I do. You put it in my
- 1:43head. And they go, we have no record of that.
- 1:46And I go, but it's in there. And they say, do
- 1:50you have the serial number? And I give them the
- 1:53serial number for the external processor.
- 1:53DANI: Right,
- 1:55the part that's not inside of your head.
- 1:55KARA: The
- 1:57part that's not inside my head. And they said,
- 1:58no, no, no, no, no. We need the internal processor.
- 2:01The one that's inside my skull.
- 2:01DANI: Oh, yeah. Let
- 2:04me just pull that right out for you. Yeah, let
- 2:06me just cut my head open and get that. And I
- 2:08was like, so I don't have that. And why would
- 2:11I have that? I was 16 when I had it. So I asked
- 2:13my mom. My mom's like, don't have that. I looked
- 2:16everywhere. I'm so sorry. I asked my audiologist.
- 2:18She also said, don't have that.
- 2:18DANI: I don't feel
- 2:21that would be standard procedure either. Like,
- 2:24certainly there's a serial number on my IUD that's
- 2:27inside of me right now. Why would I know what
- 2:29it was?
- 2:29KARA: Why would I have that?
- 2:29DANI: Who would have
- 2:31told me that information?
- 2:31KARA: Right. So I called
- 2:34the children's hospital where I had the surgery
- 2:35X amount of years ago. And I get the front desk
- 2:39for the ENT surgeon I had. The front desk
- 2:43person was very nice and she looked everywhere.
- 2:45She really tried. And she was like, we don't
- 2:47have it. And she explained the process. She was
- 2:49like, the equipment comes straight from Cochlear.
- 2:52They enter that data into the system. The processor
- 2:55goes straight to the OR and then into your head.
- 2:58There's no handling of it because it has to be
- 3:01sterile.
- 3:01DANI: Right.
- 3:01KARA: And I was like, that makes complete
- 3:03sense.
- 3:03DANI: And your doctor's not like, let me check
- 3:06the serial number real quick.
- 3:06KARA: No, she's like,
- 3:08I'm going to put it in her head and make sure
- 3:10it works. Yeah. And she was like, but Cochlear
- 3:13should have it. And I was like, honey, that is
- 3:15why I'm here. Help me.
- 3:15DANI: This feels like a job
- 3:19for the person that's supposed to liaison, too.
- 3:24KARA: Like, they should be digging into my records.
- 3:26DANI: Yeah. This doesn't feel like your job.
- 3:26KARA: I know.
- 3:29DANI: The irony also of just like being like you, a
- 3:32deaf person, can you just hop on the phone like
- 3:35a bunch today and call all these people? And
- 3:38it's like, okay, well, me making those calls
- 3:40should be proof that you put an implant in my
- 3:43head.
- 3:43KARA: Literally. I'm speaking to you through
- 3:46the Bluetooth.
- 3:46DANI: Wow.
- 3:46KARA: Yeah. I was on the phone
- 3:50with Cochlear for two hours on hold and then
- 3:52I hung up.
- 3:52DANI: Jesus.
- 3:52KARA: Two hours. I don't know. It
- 3:55feels insane to have this piece of equipment
- 3:58in my body.
- 3:58DANI: That you don't have to, like, argue.
- 4:01KARA: That I have to argue that I have one. And then,
- 4:05yeah, also get it upgraded. It just, yeah. My
- 4:08body is, my body belongs to a corporation.
- 4:08DANI: Yeah.
- 4:12KARA: It belongs to Cochlear Americas.
- 4:12DANI: Well, hey,
- 4:15we're both women. All of our bodies belong to
- 4:18corporations, in a sense. But yours doubly so.
- 4:21KARA: As of 2015 to 2022, approximately over 170,000
- 4:26to over 183,000 people in the U.S. Have received
- 4:30Cochlear implants, including around 65,000 children.
- 4:33DANI: And that range is so wide because they're not
- 4:36keeping very good records.
- 4:36KARA: Exactly.
- 4:36DANI: So that's
- 4:39awesome.
- 4:39KARA: Awesome.
- 4:39DANI: Really cool.
- 4:39KARA: Do you want to
- 4:43get to the show?
- 4:43DANI: Yeah, let's do it.
- 4:43KARA: Speaking
- 4:45of deafness. [CHEERFUL, UPBEAT MUSIC] Season 1, Episode 21, The Sleep
- 5:02of Reason Produces Monsters, which aired March
- 5:0513, 2012.
- 5:05DANI: I have to look up the painting.
- 5:05KARA: It's
- 5:09by Francisco Goya.
- 5:09DANI: Oh. Oh, I like that.
- 5:09KARA: It's
- 5:13cool, isn't it? It's a person sleeping, I think,
- 5:16at their desk.
- 5:16DANI: Is this an etching?
- 5:16KARA: It's an aquatint,
- 5:21which is like a kind of etch print.
- 5:21DANI: Okay, cool.
- 5:25KARA: So I did a little Googling about it, and basically
- 5:28this was during the Enlightenment time. And Spain
- 5:32was kind of behind. They were like very anti
- 5:34-intellectual. It was a critique of Spanish society
- 5:38at the time. Because he was saying, you know,
- 5:41the abundance of imagination without reason or
- 5:44logic will produce monsters. And then relating
- 5:48to the show, the sleep of reason is Emmett and
- 5:51Simone sleeping with each other. And that creates
- 5:55unfortunate consequences.
- 5:55DANI: Dude, watching them
- 5:58hook up just in the recap, like previously on
- 6:01Switched at Birth, I had to avert my eyes. It's
- 6:04hard to look at. Anyway, episode opens. Here
- 6:08comes Daphne.
- 6:08KARA: We're still at the hotel post -game.
- 6:11DANI: It's the morning after.
- 6:11KARA: Daphne knocks on the
- 6:13door to Simone's room and is like, hey, good
- 6:15morning. Sorry for accusing you of trying to
- 6:19get me kicked out of the game. Do you want to
- 6:21get breakfast?
- 6:21DANI: I can't believe she's just like...
- 6:24Let's put it all behind us. Yes, you were mad
- 6:26at Simone about that, but more so it was about
- 6:29the watch and the racism and the finding out
- 6:33that she bullied that girl out of school in eighth
- 6:35grade.
- 6:35KARA: Simone is an awful friend, regardless.
- 6:35DANI: Just
- 6:40because she didn't do this one awful thing that
- 6:42you thought she did after you were already mad
- 6:44at her.
- 6:44KARA: Does that negate everything she's done?
- 6:47DANI: Apparently to Daphne it does. She has like the
- 6:50memory of a goldfish. I don't know.
- 6:50KARA: I guess so.
- 6:52DANI: Well, she doesn't have any girlfriends. She's
- 6:54desperate.
- 6:54KARA: She is. Simone is like, can't do breakfast.
- 6:58The shower's running. And I like that she said
- 7:01the shower's running because Daphne can't hear
- 7:03the shower. So she just believes her. Simone closes
- 7:05the door and who's behind the door but Emmett panicking.
- 7:09DANI: He looks so scared. He's like, I gotta go. And
- 7:12she's like, I don't understand what you're saying,
- 7:14but you gotta go.
- 7:14KARA: Very clear what he's saying.
- 7:17DANI: I know.
- 7:17KARA: Again, he's a very clear signer.
- 7:17DANI: He's
- 7:19so clear. But he's such a clear communicator
- 7:23until it counts.
- 7:23KARA: Sure. The two of them scope
- 7:26out the hallway and then Emmett flees.
- 7:26DANI: The way
- 7:28they did that shot so many times, they have Simone
- 7:30look out and then they have Emmett look out twice.
- 7:32I was like, they're setting him up to get caught
- 7:35right away. Even though I remember that he doesn't,
- 7:38it's like...
- 7:38KARA: I thought Daphne was going to pop
- 7:40by and be like, and another thing.
- 7:40DANI: Yeah. And
- 7:43also, Emmett's like, I got to go and I got to
- 7:46be like smooth and chill about it. He leaves
- 7:48the room without his shoes on. He's like trying.
- 7:51And then stands right next to the door and puts
- 7:53his shoes on. I'm like, nothing about this is
- 7:56subtle if anyone you knew came around the corner.
- 7:59KARA: You should just walk calmly and fast.
- 7:59DANI: Right.
- 8:01KARA: Brisk.
- 8:01DANI: Come out fully clothed, maybe. Just a
- 8:04concept. Just an idea.
- 8:04KARA: I know.
- 8:04DANI: For next time.
- 8:08KARA: Next scene, we're back at the Kennish house.
- 8:10Kathryn is staring at an email that she's afraid
- 8:14to open.
- 8:14DANI: The first chapter of Sarah Lazar's book.
- 8:17KARA: I am so sick of the Sarah Lazar storyline.
- 8:17DANI: Me
- 8:20too, but I am excited watching Kathryn get,
- 8:24like, angry.
- 8:24KARA: That's true. I was satisfied.
- 8:24DANI: And
- 8:27I feel like Bay comes in and gets good advice
- 8:29for her to be like, don't read it. Who cares?
- 8:32Don't let what she's doing affect what you're
- 8:33doing.
- 8:33KARA: Kathryn listens at this moment, but
- 8:36not later. But honestly, good that she reads it.
- 8:38DANI: Yeah, it is good.
- 8:38KARA: For what she finds out later
- 8:39on.
- 8:39DANI: But I think Bay's advice is coming from a
- 8:42good place, too.
- 8:42KARA: Bay's in the kitchen because
- 8:44she has to get a bunch of paper towels.
- 8:44DANI: Oh, I
- 8:47guess she just spilled some paint off screen
- 8:48or whatever.
- 8:48KARA: Yeah, she spilled a bunch of yellow
- 8:51paint. She's cleaning it up. And then Emmett
- 8:53approaches. And he is being so nice to her now.
- 8:57So nice where she's thrown off.
- 8:57DANI: You gotta be
- 9:00more subtle than that.
- 9:00KARA: Yeah, she says, yesterday
- 9:03you were yelling at me.
- 9:03DANI: Yeah, and he's like,
- 9:06anyway, can we get birthday dinner, just the
- 9:08two of us, and, like, make it really chill and
- 9:11nice? And she's like, what the fuck are you talking
- 9:13about?
- 9:13KARA: Whiplash.
- 9:13DANI: Yeah, so she goes straight
- 9:17to Daphne. This was sweet. I'm loving this sisterly
- 9:19bond.
- 9:19DANI: I love it. They're, like, besties right
- 9:22now.
- 9:22KARA: Thank God.
- 9:22DANI: I don't think it lasts, but I'm
- 9:25really enjoying it. Love this part. I also feel
- 9:26for Daphne, though. Thank God she's, like, over
- 9:28Emmett. But her being the go-between, still,
- 9:32that must be so tiring.
- 9:32KARA: Yeah. Bay goes, why is
- 9:35Emmett being nice to me? Again, Emmett has been
- 9:38awful to her for the past few episodes. So she's
- 9:42like, this is strange. Why is my boyfriend being
- 9:44nice to me? Daphne, did you talk to him? Daphne
- 9:46says, I don't know what's going on, but go with
- 9:48it. Also, I'm shopping for a gift for Emmett,
- 9:51and I found a Deafenstein poster in Italian. And
- 9:54Bay goes, Deafenstein again?
- 9:54DANI: She's like, girl,
- 9:57this is getting old.
- 9:57KARA: Yeah. But Daphne rightfully
- 10:00says, listen, we have a drought. There's not
- 10:03enough ASL movies. There's only like five ASL
- 10:06horror movies in the past 50 years. And she's
- 10:08right.
- 10:08DANI: Yeah. And then she says it's gotten so
- 10:11bad that Emmett and I were going to write our
- 10:13own. Like, we even came up with a script and
- 10:14everything. And Bay was like, oh, well, let's
- 10:17just do that for his birthday.
- 10:17KARA: And what's it
- 10:18called?
- 10:18DANI: Dawn of the Deaf.
- 10:18KARA: That's kind of fun.
- 10:21DANI: It's good. Yeah. Daphne is like, are you sure?
- 10:25Because we wanted it to be good. Like, we wanted
- 10:28there to be zombies that aren't cheesy. Which
- 10:30is just so funny because I was like, Daphne,
- 10:32have you not seen Deafenstein slash Deafula? Like,
- 10:35they are cheesy.
- 10:35KARA: That's what makes it fun.
- 10:35DANI: That's
- 10:38what makes it fun.
- 10:38KARA: And once they film it, it's
- 10:40kind of cheesy.
- 10:40DANI: Most zombie movies are cheesy.
- 10:43Zombie movies are either terrifying and, in my
- 10:46opinion, not that fun to watch, or they're a
- 10:49little cheesy. And that makes them fun.
- 10:49KARA: Well,
- 10:52Bay's like don't worry, because John and Kathryn
- 10:55will put a buttload of money into this.
- 10:55DANI: They
- 10:57love a project.
- 10:57KARA: Next scene, Kathryn is chasing
- 11:00after Regina. And she's like, please, I need
- 11:03your involvement in this book. Regina says no.
- 11:06DANI: I think Regina should be more cooperative. She
- 11:09gets there later on in this episode, but I think
- 11:12she should be more cooperative.
- 11:12KARA: It's not even
- 11:14a conversation.
- 11:14DANI: Yeah, I just, I don't, I don't
- 11:18want to be like, Regina, you owe them. But I
- 11:21feel that Kathryn has not kicked you out of
- 11:24the house after you revealed that you knew about
- 11:26the switch and you like fucked up the whole lawsuit,
- 11:29not kicked you out of the house after you allowed
- 11:32Angelo back in, even though he ended up being
- 11:35really sus, supported you through lots of things.
- 11:40Generally, I just think Kathryn's not your
- 11:43enemy.
- 11:43KARA: She's not.
- 11:43DANI: And Kathryn's going to write
- 11:46the book either way.
- 11:46KARA: And she's encouraging you
- 11:48to share your side of the story.
- 11:48DANI: Yeah, she's
- 11:50like, it would actually be so much better because
- 11:52you could do it in your words.
- 11:52KARA: Yeah, whatever.
- 11:55DANIL I think Regina's being ridiculous.
- 11:55KARA: She's always
- 11:57being ridiculous.
- 11:57DANI: What's new?
- 11:57KARA: Daphne goes up
- 12:00to Toby and she says, you're going to do the
- 12:02movie score.
- 12:02DANI: Yeah.
- 12:02KARA: And he goes, okay, what kind
- 12:05of music are we feeling? And she says, it all
- 12:07sounds the same to me, but I trust you.
- 12:07DANI: Toby's
- 12:09signing is pretty good.
- 12:09KARA: Right.
- 12:09DANI: With the musical
- 12:12terms and stuff. I was like, wow. Go Toby. She
- 12:15says it's all the same to me. Is that true?
- 12:15KARA: Not
- 12:17for me.
- 12:17DANI: Right. Well, and also not to Daphne,
- 12:20who is famously a big fan of music.
- 12:20KARA: She's got
- 12:24magic hearing.
- 12:24DANI: Well, she like has that whole
- 12:26CD collection that Bay goes through in the first
- 12:28episode.
- 12:28KARA: Right.
- 12:28DANI: She's like, I love the vibrations.
- 12:31Like, these are the things I like. I don't know.
- 12:33I think that the score would still matter to
- 12:36her. I think I can't parse out really. A was playing
- 12:41the piano once for me and they were trying to
- 12:43explain the difference between a major and a
- 12:45minor chord. I couldn't hear the difference. But
- 12:47I can hear when something is like jazzy and upbeat
- 12:51versus like melancholic, you know?
- 12:51DANI: yeah and what
- 12:55he was saying was like, maybe discordant strings
- 12:57or like a really unsettling- I can't remember
- 13:01what other instrumental terms he used. But he
- 13:03was describing very different things.
- 13:03KARA: right
- 13:03DANI: so
- 13:06I was kind of like okay. I don't know. Let's stick
- 13:09to one narrative about Daphne's feelings on music.
- 13:12I think she would have some opinions.
- 13:12KARA: I'm sure
- 13:14there are plenty of deaf people who can't understand
- 13:16the difference, but I feel like Daphne can.
- 13:16DANI: Yeah.
- 13:19KARA: Whatever. Toby, he was like, I heard Simone tried
- 13:22to disqualify you. That sucks. And Daphne was
- 13:25like, nah, it wasn't her. We're good.
- 13:25DANI: I can't
- 13:27believe they're good. Anyway. That must have
- 13:30been a crazy breakfast. Continental breakfast
- 13:32at the hotel.
- 13:32KARA: You're right. Adrianna's here.
- 13:32DANI: Adrianna.
- 13:36KARA: Finally. She's back. We're at the guest house
- 13:39and Daphne is telling Regina about the movie.
- 13:41Regina is not listening.
- 13:41DANI: No. Regina's not clocking
- 13:45in to her shift at Mom.
- 13:45KARA: At Mom. But Daphne's
- 13:49like, John got costumes already. I think it's
- 13:51been like one day. But they are on it.
- 13:51DANI: I love
- 13:54this. This is also how my parents would have
- 13:56been.
- 13:56KARA: Me too.
- 13:56DANI: I mean, they wouldn't have rented.
- 13:58I mean, actually, later on, they're like, they
- 14:01rented a wind machine. It's just a big fan. Like,
- 14:04I also have a big fan like that at my house.
- 14:06KARA: And also a smoke machine. You can get that from
- 14:08your neighbor. It's a Halloween decoration.
- 14:08DANI: Yeah.
- 14:10No, my parents would have gone all in if I wanted
- 14:13to do something like this, too. So I loved- I
- 14:15loved seeing them be parents.
- 14:15KARA: But then Regina's
- 14:18like, OK, because John and Kathryn are being
- 14:20so involved, I can do makeup. And Daphne goes.
- 14:24Actually, Kathryn already got a makeup artist, but
- 14:26you can do hair. And Adrianna says, I'm gonna
- 14:28go swim. I can't believe you losers have never
- 14:31swam in this pool.
- 14:31DANI: I mean, the pool's so huge
- 14:33for Daphne and has been huge. And it's kind of,
- 14:36at this point, symbolic of her feeling immersed
- 14:39in the family. So I get them being like, she
- 14:43hasn't been in the pool yet. But I love the idea
- 14:45that Adrianna's swimming, like, all the time.
- 14:48Because that's what she implies. She's like,
- 14:50I'm gonna go for a dip.
- 14:50KARA: As she should.
- 14:50DANI: Love that.
- 14:53KARA: Now we're in Emmett's room and he is unpacking.
- 14:57He just moved back from his dad's house back
- 14:59to Melody's. He's unpacking and he's looking
- 15:02at the pictures of Bay on his wall.
- 15:02DANI: And feeling
- 15:05guilt.
- 15:05KARA: And feeling immense guilt. Melody comes
- 15:08in and checks on him.
- 15:08DANI: And she's trying to be
- 15:11sweet and make him feel better. And she's making
- 15:14him feel so much better.
- 15:14KARA: I know. She's like,
- 15:16we should do dinner for your birthday and we
- 15:18should invite Bay. And he goes, no, we're going
- 15:20to do the Dawn of the Deaf movie. And Melody's
- 15:23like, well, that's okay. Bay can be invited any
- 15:27other time. She's pretty special.
- 15:27DANI: I wish that Melody
- 15:29had also taken any moment to apologize for her
- 15:33energy around Bay at any point which she still
- 15:36has not done to Emmett or Regina or Bay.
- 15:36KARA: right,
- 15:38she has not.
- 15:38DANI: she's never apologized. She's just
- 15:41like I've changed my mind. It's like okay.
- 15:41KARA: she's
- 15:44nice
- 15:44DANI: yeah thanks girl and also it's like
- 15:47she's pretty special because she got involved
- 15:50in this custody battle and fixed it for me. Okay.
- 15:52KARA: because she brought you back to me.
- 15:52DANI: She's trying.
- 15:55KARA: She is trying. And then at the Kennish house,
- 15:58Kathryn has clearly opened and read the chapter
- 16:01against Bay's advice. And in the chapter, she
- 16:05discloses that Kathryn had a miscarriage before
- 16:08having Bay.
- 16:08KARA: Having Daphne, but yes.
- 16:08DANI: Well, yeah.
- 16:12Information that she realizes John must have
- 16:15told Sarah Lazar.
- 16:15KARA: Yes.
- 16:15DANI: Which is an insane violation.
- 16:20So she comes in. She's like, literally, what
- 16:23the fuck? She is shouting at him.
- 16:23KARA: Yeah. And John
- 16:26goes, a lot of couples miscarry. And Kathryn
- 16:29goes, that's not the fucking point.
- 16:29DANI: No, it's
- 16:31not. And also, as much as he can be like, well,
- 16:34that happened to us. I was like explaining to
- 16:37her something that happened to us. It's really
- 16:40mostly about Kathryn. And it's also something
- 16:43intimate happening to Kathryn's body.
- 16:43KARA: To her
- 16:46body. And it's very personal, very traumatic.
- 16:48DANI: Yeah. No, John fucked up.
- 16:48KARA: He did.
- 16:48DANI: Big time.
- 16:48KARA: And
- 16:53also because he revealed that to Sarah Lazar,
- 16:55I think it also reveals that his relationship
- 16:59to her must have been much closer than something
- 17:01professional.
- 17:01DANI: Yeah.
- 17:01KARA: If he did disclose this miscarriage
- 17:06to her.
- 17:06DANI: Yeah. Kathryn's going to tell Regina
- 17:08more later in this episode, but basically there's
- 17:11just like all these rumors about him and Sarah
- 17:15Lazar hooking up.
- 17:15KARA: Yeah.
- 17:15DANI: And the way he acts about
- 17:19her, he's like, Not helping himself.
- 17:19KARA: Not at all.
- 17:23And Kathryn will give him the silent treatment
- 17:26for the rest of the episode.
- 17:26DANI: And he deserves
- 17:28it.
- 17:28KARA: He does.
- 17:28DANI: His immediate reaction should have
- 17:31been, oh my God, I'm so sorry. You're right.
- 17:34I did say that. I was just really upset. Blah,
- 17:37blah, blah. Like, he explains later why it happened.
- 17:39But for his knee-jerk reaction to be like, what?
- 17:43It's not that big of a deal.
- 17:43KARA: Yeah. He deserved
- 17:46the silent treatment.
- 17:46DANI: That sucks.
- 17:46KARA: Now we're at
- 17:49the guest house.
- 17:49DANI: Yeah.
- 17:49KARA: Wilke's over. Daphne
- 17:52is teaching him ASL, specifically the lines for
- 17:55the Dawn of the Deaf movie.
- 17:55DANI: I know. I got really
- 17:57excited at first. I was like, oh, my God. We
- 18:00were wrong. He is trying. And then I realized.
- 18:03KARA: He's not.
- 18:03DANI: He's not. It's just that he wants to
- 18:06be in the movie. And if he wants to be in the
- 18:07movie, as Daphne says, you have to sign.
- 18:07KARA: Right.
- 18:10DANI: And so he's learning just the lines for the movie.
- 18:13KARA: He is so annoying.
- 18:13DANI: At first, he's like got a
- 18:16bad attitude about it. And then I feel like when
- 18:18he comes back, he's like a little bit more committed.
- 18:21KARA: He is.
- 18:21DANI: I just think Wilke's not the kind of.
- 18:24He's not used to trying in relationships.
- 18:24KARA: Or
- 18:27at all.
- 18:27DANI: Yeah.
- 18:27KARA: It doesn't seem like he tries in
- 18:29school.
- 18:29DANI: No.
- 18:29KARA: Or anything.
- 18:29DANI: So in that regard, I
- 18:32think being with Daphne is good for him.
- 18:32KARA: That's
- 18:35true.
- 18:35DANI: Because it's forcing him to try stuff out
- 18:37of his comfort zone. But I don't think that he's
- 18:40good for Daphne.
- 18:40KARA: I agree. I also like this part
- 18:43because it's a nice informative piece about
- 18:45ASL for the viewers. The line she's trying to
- 18:48teach him is, are you a student? But the way
- 18:51you would sign that in ASL is STUDENT YOU. And then
- 18:55when you do yes or no questions, your eyebrows
- 18:57are up. But then when you do who, what, where,
- 19:01when, why questions, your eyebrows go down. And
- 19:05Wilke's like, why are we doing it like we're
- 19:08Yoda? And Daphne explains it. ASL order usually
- 19:12goes topic, subject, object, then verb.
- 19:12DANI: It is
- 19:15the hardest part of the language to me. It does
- 19:18not make sense to my brain.
- 19:18KARA: The order is a little
- 19:20confusing. But she's right. And it was nice to
- 19:22share to the viewers.
- 19:22DANI: Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:22KARA: Because
- 19:25Daphne, for the most part, and everyone else
- 19:29pretty much, they're simcomming, but they're
- 19:31also doing Signed Exact English rather than true
- 19:33ASL.
- 19:33DANI: Because they're simcomming.
- 19:33KARA: Because they're
- 19:36simcomming. But even when Daphne signs like to
- 19:40Emmett, no simcomming. She does sign Signed Exact
- 19:44English or SEE instead of true ASL with that
- 19:48grammatical structure. I don't know.
- 19:48DANI: It's a bit
- 19:51bothersome that they don't... Because there are
- 19:54people that use SEE.
- 19:54KARA: Yeah, I do most of the
- 19:57time.
- 19:57DANI: It's not right. It's like a different...
- 20:01KARA: It's just a different grammatical structure,
- 20:03but it's still the sign language.
- 20:03DANI: It's just not
- 20:05ASL grammar structure. I wish they'd added like...
- 20:09Two more lines to clarify that, you know?
- 20:09KARA: I know.
- 20:12DANI: Because I think, like, I mean, it's because Wilke
- 20:14doesn't know. But let's say Wilke does know
- 20:17and could be like, I don't understand. This isn't
- 20:19the way you've been teaching me. For her to be
- 20:22like, well, we're doing the film in ASL, but
- 20:26I typically communicate in SEE because that's
- 20:30what's easier for my mom and my grandma and all
- 20:33these people in my life.
- 20:33KARA: That's a good point.
- 20:35DANI: That I feel like could have been illuminating.
- 20:37I do remember being 12 and, like, not understanding
- 20:40why, you know?
- 20:40KARA: It would have been nice for her
- 20:43to just elaborate a little bit more.
- 20:43DANI: Just a little
- 20:45bit.
- 20:45KARA: And also maybe give some more lines that
- 20:48Wilke had to say. While Wilke takes a little
- 20:50signing break, he looks around the guest house
- 20:52and he goes, you know, Toby and I, when we were
- 20:55kids, we used to hide out here and then make
- 20:58Bay go get us cookies. And another life that
- 21:00would have been you getting us cookies. It's
- 21:03a cute line.
- 21:03DANI: It's really nice, but it does, unfortunately,
- 21:06spark. The start of Daphne's spiral crisis that
- 21:10happens throughout this episode. Throughout this
- 21:12episode, Daphne's, it's important to note that
- 21:14she is like very quietly.
- 21:14KARA: Wistfully.
- 21:14DANI: Yeah, sort
- 21:18of going through this like yearning and sadness
- 21:22as she's exploring new parts of the Kennish grounds.
- 21:26Because the next scene, her and Emmett are like
- 21:29scouting shooting locations on the property.
- 21:32KARA: They must own like 10 acres.
- 21:32DANI: Yeah, because they're
- 21:35in a part of the...the yard that we've never
- 21:37seen, but also it seems like they've never seen
- 21:40because we're next to an aviary.
- 21:40KARA: Daphne goes,
- 21:44I've lived here for months and I've never seen
- 21:47this.
- 21:47DANI: Yeah, it's like a huge birdcage. And Kathryn
- 21:51is pulling decor out of like a storage shed that
- 21:55we've also never seen.
- 21:55KARA: Yes.
- 21:55DANI: And she's like, look
- 21:58at all this, these like Halloween decorations
- 22:01that we can use, whatever.
- 22:01KARA: She pulls out a little
- 22:03grave, a little prop grave. She's so excited.
- 22:07DANI: This is the way parents should be.
- 22:07KARA: I know.
- 22:07DANI: Supporting
- 22:10their child's creativity.
- 22:10KARA: Regina, where are you?
- 22:12DANI: Literally. Well, she's like pouting because she
- 22:15can't provide this for Daphne, but she literally
- 22:18could. And she helps out later. Like, I don't
- 22:20know. She's pouting for no reason. Or she has
- 22:22her reasons, but I don't like her.
- 22:22KARA: I also want
- 22:25to add that while Daphne and Emmett are walking
- 22:28down the grounds, they're discussing like the
- 22:31pacing and the script and whatnot.
- 22:31DANI: Yeah.
- 22:31KARA: And
- 22:33Emmett makes a fun allusion. He says, in the
- 22:36story, I'll be doomed once Bay realizes I'm a
- 22:39monster.
- 22:39DANI: Yeah, there's a lot of that.
- 22:39KARA: It's great.
- 22:43Yeah, but then they find the aviary. Well, they
- 22:45find this house and like, what the hell is that?
- 22:47DANI: Yeah.
- 22:47KARA: And Kathryn goes, that's an aviary. But
- 22:50we never turned it into an aviary because when
- 22:52Bay was little, she didn't want us to imprison the
- 22:55birds. So it just turned into a playhouse.
- 22:55DANI: Daphne
- 22:57looks down and Bay and Toby's handprints are
- 23:01in the concrete laid around the aviary.
- 23:01KARA: Yes,
- 23:05it's from June 16th, 2000. So Bay and Daphne
- 23:09must have been four at the time. But then Daphne
- 23:12incorrectly says, so Bay was five? And Kathryn
- 23:15says yes. That's not true, they were four years
- 23:17and seven months.
- 23:17DANI: I love that you paused it to
- 23:19look it up. I did not pay attention to
- 23:22the date.
- 23:22KARA: basically, you see Daphne sadly looking
- 23:25at this, reflecting at the childhood she was supposed
- 23:27to have. Those are supposed to be her hands
- 23:29on the cement
- 23:29DANI: yeah. This is the- yeah it's like
- 23:32the first time in a minute I feel that- I guess
- 23:34she was so worried about basketball and stuff
- 23:36she didn't really have time for like an identity
- 23:39crisis but it's coming out.
- 23:39KARA: no one's processing
- 23:42this
- 23:42DANI: yeah. This also seeing all of the grounds
- 23:45and stuff made me re-look-up like where were
- 23:48they filming and just reminded that all of the
- 23:52sets were in a studio lot in Santa Clarita that
- 23:55I have also worked at as a background actor.
- 23:58KARA: oh fun!
- 23:58DANI: I was like oh wow that's cool. I wonder
- 24:01if they're still there. They definitely aren't.
- 24:03KARA: Now we're in the kitchen and Kathryn was on
- 24:06the phone with Craig Tebbe, the lawyer. Apparently
- 24:08Angelo left some belongings in the storage locker
- 24:11in the basement of his apartment building. And
- 24:14he recommends that they go see it along with
- 24:17the private investigator. And John says, well,
- 24:20Regina should go. She like knew him the best
- 24:23and she could find out something that maybe we
- 24:25couldn't.
- 24:25DANI: I do feel like everyone's acting like
- 24:27Angelo's dead. Like the way they're speaking
- 24:30about him and stuff.
- 24:30KARA: Well, he has been...
- 24:30DANI: I know
- 24:33he's missing, but they don't actually think he's
- 24:35dead.
- 24:35KARA: They do speak like he's dead. You're right.
- 24:38DANI: Dead to them, I guess.
- 24:38KARA: Yeah. Bay is asking a
- 24:41Buckner kid now for the video equipment. And
- 24:45she's like, I really need the camera. It's for
- 24:47a zombie movie I'm making. And then this is where
- 24:50we get the Twilight reference.
- 24:50DANI: Twilight reference.
- 24:52KARA: Another Twilight reference. And this guy goes,
- 24:55why don't you add a brooding vampire and an oversexed
- 24:58werewolf? Then you can hit all three horror cliches
- 25:01at once. But he's basically like, no, you haven't
- 25:04even taken Media Studies I, so you can't have
- 25:07the camera. And even if you did, it's already
- 25:09checked out by Simone Sinclair. Cut to next scene.
- 25:12Bay runs up to Simone in the library again. Everyone's
- 25:16yapping in the library. And she's like hi, I
- 25:20want to talk to you about something. And Simone
- 25:21is shaking in her boots.
- 25:21DANI: Simone goes, here? You
- 25:24want to talk here? Even if she did know, I feel
- 25:27like they would have this confrontation in the
- 25:29library. The way they disrespect the library.
- 25:32KARA: People are studying there, guys.
- 25:32DANI: Yeah, shut
- 25:34up.
- 25:34KARA: But Bay goes oh, I just want the video stuff.
- 25:37We're doing a movie. And Simone immediately is
- 25:39like, yes, yes, absolutely. You can have it.
- 25:41DANI: Yeah. And then Bay stands up and goes, oh, by
- 25:44the way, I heard what happened at the tournament.
- 25:47Simone's like, oh, well, listen, here's what
- 25:51happened. And Bay's like, relax, you'll win the
- 25:54next one. I love this vocal thing that Vanessa
- 25:59Marano does for Bay when she's like a little
- 26:02uncomfortable she's like Go Bulldogs, like it's
- 26:05like very like weird in her throat.
- 26:05KARA: it's a scarf.
- 26:08DANI: Literally it's her, it's a scarf. Go Bulldogs.
- 26:13KARA: Simone is visibly sweating.
- 26:13DANI: Yeah. And then, yeah,
- 26:15at the Kennish house, everyone is getting zombified.
- 26:19KARA: It's movie shoot day.
- 26:19DANI: Yeah. It's so 2012.
- 26:19KARA: It's
- 26:22awesome. It also must be the crack of dawn because
- 26:25people keep mentioning how early it is.
- 26:25DANI: It's
- 26:28the Dawn of the Deaf.
- 26:28KARA: That's so true. Adrianna's
- 26:30in the movie.
- 26:30DANI: Yeah.
- 26:30KARA: That's sweet.
- 26:30DANI: Love that.
- 26:32KARA: I'm glad she got a role. They have a smoke machine.
- 26:34They got a wind machine.
- 26:34DANI: Again, just a big fan.
- 26:38KARA: Just a big fan. John and Wilke are playing guards.
- 26:41Regina's doing hair. And Regina looks at the
- 26:44wind machine and goes, can't they use actual
- 26:46wind? Leave it be.
- 26:46DANI: Again, it's just a big fan.
- 26:50For that to be her breaking point is so funny.
- 26:53KARA: She was annoying the hell out of me.
- 26:53DANI: She's being
- 26:56so pouty.
- 26:56KARA: And then it's time to start filming.
- 26:59And then poor Toby does not know how to use this
- 27:02equipment. He grabs the camera and he's like,
- 27:05it keeps saying standby. I don't know why.
- 27:05DANI: Yeah,
- 27:08he's not good at it.
- 27:08KARA: Yeah. Kathryn is preparing
- 27:12a platter of food. So much food for the kids
- 27:17in the shoot.
- 27:17DANI: this kitchen, when she's like in
- 27:20there with the spread in the well, in like the
- 27:22dining room area, I feel like we are almost never
- 27:25in that room. There were a lot of new angles of
- 27:27the Kennish house.
- 27:27KARA: yeah it was cool.
- 27:27DANI: But it looked
- 27:30exactly like my friend Zoe's house.
- 27:30KARA: fun.
- 27:30DANI: and I
- 27:34was like I love that kitchen, and then I was like
- 27:36I've kind of been in that kitchen actually.
- 27:36KARA: yeah.
- 27:38DANI: shout out to Zoe. She does listen.
- 27:38KARA: Hi, Zoe. She's
- 27:42still giving John the silent treatment.
- 27:42DANI: Yeah.
- 27:44KARA: And John goes, Kathryn, it just came out. I
- 27:47couldn't help it. I don't know if that's just
- 27:49something that comes out.
- 27:49DANI: I just like don't feel
- 27:51sympathy for him.
- 27:51KARA: Me neither.
- 27:51DANI: I also think they're
- 27:55going to spend the rest of this episode arguing
- 27:56and we don't really get a resolution on whether
- 27:59or not he slept with Sarah Lazar. Like he's always
- 28:01just like, I told you I didn't. It's not that
- 28:04it doesn't matter that he didn't. But I do think
- 28:07the fact that he carried on with a relationship
- 28:11that was even able to like spread rumors like
- 28:15that.
- 28:15KARA: It's quite emotionally intimate.
- 28:15DANI: yeah it
- 28:18was quite emotionally intimate and also like,
- 28:20if your wife is worried that you're sleeping-
- 28:23that you are having an affair with this person...
- 28:25KARA: maybe back off.
- 28:25DANI: maybe back off even if you're
- 28:28not. You know?
- 28:28KARA: yeah, if it gets to that point.
- 28:31DANI: if it's really starting to threaten your
- 28:33marriage like, I don't think Kathryn's being
- 28:36unreasonable.
- 28:36KARA: Me neither.
- 28:36DANI: To be like, you were
- 28:38having lots of intimate dinners and, like, talks
- 28:41about, quote, baseball with this woman. And then
- 28:44you told her these intimate details. Obviously,
- 28:47this is in the past now. But, like, even how
- 28:50he's handling it today, even if he's innocent,
- 28:53you're not behaving in a way that makes me want
- 28:56to root for you.
- 28:56KARA: And Kathryn later says there's
- 28:59also the compounded stress of the media and,
- 29:02like, the paparazzi talking about these two.
- 29:04DANI: Right.
- 29:04KARA: So it seems like they were seen together
- 29:06a lot, that even the paparazzi was, like...
- 29:06DANI: Yeah,
- 29:09I guess John is, like, more famous than we think
- 29:12he is.
- 29:12KARA: He's a famous baseball player.
- 29:12DANI: You know
- 29:14I don't really care about sports like that, so
- 29:16I guess I wouldn't really know the equivalent.
- 29:19KARA: Like A-Rod.
- 29:19DANI: Yeah, I couldn't recognize him on
- 29:22the street. Those are, again, names I know, but
- 29:25not, like...
- 29:25KARA: But I think.
- 29:25DANI: But I understand what
- 29:28you're saying.
- 29:28KARA: Do you remember like when the
- 29:29Tiger Woods cheating scandal came out and that
- 29:32was huge?
- 29:32DANI: Yes, but I think that was an anomaly.
- 29:35Why were we all acting like those were our parents?
- 29:38KARA: I know, that was crazy.
- 29:38DANI: I was like, he needs
- 29:40to be in federal prison.
- 29:40KARA: He's the worst person
- 29:42ever.
- 29:42DANI: I don't know. Yeah, I don't think it helped
- 29:45that I was like just young enough that I was
- 29:49not sure who was Tiger Woods and who was.
- 29:49KARA: The
- 29:52girl?
- 29:52DANI: No, no, no, no. Like I mixed up Tiger Woods
- 29:56and what's his name?
- 29:56KARA: Is there another golf player?
- 30:00DANI: No, the guy that killed all those people. The
- 30:02guy that killed his girlfriend. If the glove
- 30:04don't fit.
- 30:04KARA: Oh, OJ Simpson?
- 30:04DANI: Yes. Because didn't
- 30:09OJ play golf?
- 30:09KARA: He was a football player.
- 30:09DANI: Oh, well,
- 30:12see, I don't know. I just I feel like I saw on
- 30:15tabloids like stuff about OJ and then stuff
- 30:18about Tiger Woods. And my brain, my brain like
- 30:22morphed them together. So I was like, I'm not
- 30:25actually sure what crime was committed either
- 30:28way.
- 30:28KARA: Two completely different kinds.
- 30:28DANI: I know.
- 30:31But in my brain, you know, like, I don't know.
- 30:36It's like how I was also really scared of Michael
- 30:38Jackson when I was nine. Cause all the paparazzi
- 30:41photos of him made him look so scary.
- 30:41KARA: Right.
- 30:45DANI: And then all the coverage was like, he's dead.
- 30:47KARA: I took it so personally when he died. I didn't
- 30:50listen to any of his music except Thriller. But
- 30:52I remember the day he died.
- 30:52DANI: Me too. I remember
- 30:55seeing like, well, I guess it was the next day.
- 30:57I remember seeing his face like splashed on magazines
- 31:00and being like, whoa.
- 31:00KARA: Yeah. But also it was scandalous
- 31:03because he died from those drugs.
- 31:03DANI: Right.
- 31:03KARA: Overprescribing.
- 31:07DANI: Yeah.
- 31:07KARA: I know so much about the OJ Simpson
- 31:10case because I used to be really into it.
- 31:10DANI: So
- 31:13you've watched a lot of documentaries?
- 31:13KARA: I have.
- 31:15OJ Made in America is really good, guys.
- 31:15DANI: I haven't
- 31:18seen any documentaries, but I listened to the
- 31:21Celebrity Memoir Book Club episode about Kris
- 31:24Jenner's memoir. It's a two-parter. I actually
- 31:28really recommend it. It's very interesting. But
- 31:31obviously she was best friends with his girlfriend.
- 31:34KARA: Well, she was married to Robert Kardashian, who...
- 31:37DANI: But she was also best friends with OJ's girlfriend.
- 31:39KARA: Oh, Nicole Brown Simpson.
- 31:39DANI: Yes. Well, wife, I
- 31:42guess?
- 31:42KARA: Yes.
- 31:42DANI: Okay. They were best friends when
- 31:45that happened.
- 31:45KARA: Yes.
- 31:45DANI: And then her and her husband
- 31:48were divorced already.
- 31:48KARA: Her and Robert Kardashian were
- 31:51divorced?
- 31:51DANI: Yeah. So imagine your best friend gets
- 31:53murdered.
- 31:53KARA: And then your ex-husband is representing.
- 31:56DANI: And your ex-husband is representing. Yeah.
- 31:56KARA: That
- 31:59is crazy.
- 31:59DANI: I don't know if we can get sued on
- 32:02the podcast for being like, OJ did it. But, like,
- 32:04obviously OJ did it.
- 32:04KARA: He did.
- 32:04DANI: Like, everyone knows.
- 32:08He even came out with a book called If I Did
- 32:11It.
- 32:11KARA: If I Did It. And this is how I would do it.
- 32:14DANI: That's an insane thing to do. Is he dead?
- 32:14KARA: No,
- 32:16he's still alive. He's out of prison. Oh, wait.
- 32:19Actually.
- 32:19DANI: I think he's dead.
- 32:19KARA: I think he just
- 32:21died. Yeah. He died last year.
- 32:21DANI: Aww.
- 32:21KARA: That's right.
- 32:25DANI: I bet he's smiling up at us right now.
- 32:25KARA: Well,
- 32:28now he really can't sue us.
- 32:28DANI: Good point. Oh my
- 32:30God. Phew. Anyway, all that to say, I guess it
- 32:35is hard for me to remember that John was, like,
- 32:38famous enough. So then, yeah, if I'm Kathryn,
- 32:40I'm fucking pissed, dude.
- 32:40KARA: Agreed.
- 32:40DANI: I'm so pissed.
- 32:44Especially now that this woman is writing the
- 32:46book. That is so- I feel like- I know she already
- 32:49looked into, like, if there would be a lawsuit,
- 32:51I would still try to sue. I would still slap
- 32:54whatever, like, stupid case on her.
- 32:54KARA: Absolutely.
- 32:57DANI: Anyway, fuck Sarah Lazar is the point.
- 32:57KARA: Yeah.
- 33:00Toby is trying to fix the camera. Wilke's like,
- 33:03just call Simone. She obviously knows how to
- 33:05do this better than you can.
- 33:05DANI: And he says, I'm
- 33:07kind of on probation since I didn't go to her
- 33:10tournament. You're on probation?
- 33:10KARA: She should be
- 33:13on probation.
- 33:13DANI: She should be. Toby's so bad at
- 33:16holding a grudge.
- 33:16KARA: So is Daphne.
- 33:16DANI: The memories
- 33:19of a goldfish. I'm telling you.
- 33:19KARA: Like brother,
- 33:22like sister.
- 33:22DANI: Wow. Runs in the family.
- 33:22KARA: I guess
- 33:24so. Next scene. Kathryn has brought Regina
- 33:27to Angelo's storage unit. The private investigator
- 33:31opens it and he's like, go have fun. I guess
- 33:33he doesn't look. He's an investigator.
- 33:33DANI: Regina
- 33:36and Kathryn are going through it. Regina is
- 33:38clinging to that cup of coffee. She's like, I'm
- 33:40not a morning person. Girl, you were already
- 33:42up doing the hair.
- 33:42KARA: Yeah.
- 33:42DANI: Whatever.
- 33:42KARA: They're digging
- 33:45through boxes and Regina finds a wooden box and
- 33:50she opens it. And inside is pictures of Angelo
- 33:53with another woman.
- 33:53DANI: Every time that actor gets
- 33:56a call from Switched at Birth, it's to do a photo
- 33:59shoot with some random ass.
- 33:59KARA: It's a random white
- 34:02woman.
- 34:02DANI: Yeah, it's just like some random ass person.
- 34:05And they're like, okay, change seven times and
- 34:08take these seven photos.
- 34:08KARA: Perfect. Thank you.
- 34:10That's a wrap. And Regina goes, maybe he went
- 34:13to see her. I'm confused. Was he not deported?
- 34:17DANI: They don't know.
- 34:17KARA: They don't know.
- 34:17DANI: No, and Regina's
- 34:20called immigration a bunch and they have no record
- 34:23of him. But that doesn't mean anything. I know,
- 34:25but she's like, I don't know. I mean, Angelo's
- 34:27slippery.
- 34:27KARA: He's just missing.
- 34:27DANI: Yeah, he's just
- 34:30missing.
- 34:30KARA: Bay and Emmett are messing around on
- 34:34the giant, the great lawn.
- 34:34DANI: I remember this scene
- 34:38of them play fighting so well. It's like burned
- 34:40into my memory. They just have so few, this far
- 34:43into their relationship, they have so few happy
- 34:45moments. And it's very cute. And I really
- 34:48had a huge crush on Emmett when I was watching
- 34:51this as a kid.
- 34:51KARA: This lasts for 10
- 34:54seconds.
- 34:54DANI: yeah, but it's so cute. They're play fighting
- 34:57with the big fake weapons and he takes his
- 35:01scythe and he's- scythe, is that how you say it?
- 35:03S-C-Y-T-H-E?
- 35:03KARA: Scythe?
- 35:03DANI: The thing that Death holds canonically.
- 35:10KARA: Yes.
- 35:10DANI: That weapon.
- 35:10KARA: The big sharp weapon.
- 35:10DANI: Yeah.
- 35:13KARA: They're sword fighting with that.
- 35:13DANI: It's a big hook.
- 35:16KARA: Yes.
- 35:16DANI: And he hooks her and pulls her in and they
- 35:19kiss. And then she trips him and they tumble
- 35:22down the hill.
- 35:22KARA: It's cute.
- 35:22DANI: Yeah. And then she's
- 35:26like, we should get back to studying our lines.
- 35:28And he's like, yeah, the part where we kiss.
- 35:31KARA: Ha ha ha.
- 35:31DANI: Ha ha ha.
- 35:31KARA: But then Toby and Simone
- 35:34come in.
- 35:34DANI: [GROANS].
- 35:34KARA: And Bay is like, oh. Emmett, this
- 35:38is Simone. Simone, this is Emmett. Emmett cannot
- 35:41even look at Simone.
- 35:41DANI: Such a bad liar.
- 35:41KARA: Worst birthday
- 35:45ever. Today is his birthday.
- 35:45DANI: You know what? Sometimes
- 35:48you have to face the consequences of your actions.
- 35:51KARA: Which Melody's going to say later, thank God.
- 35:53DANI: Well, that's actually kind of not what she says.
- 35:55KARA: A little bit. She says you have to live with
- 35:57this. She didn't say you have to face the consequences.
- 35:59DANI: We'll get there. I had feelings.
- 35:59KARA: We're back at
- 36:01the storage unit. Kathryn is talking to Regina
- 36:04again about the book. But she finally says, listen,
- 36:09Sarah Lazar is going to...
- 36:09DANI: She doesn't even tell
- 36:12her that to try to win her over. Like, maybe
- 36:14you should have mentioned that, girl.
- 36:14KARA: Well, before
- 36:16that, she says, I'm mad at John.
- 36:16DANI: Yeah.
- 36:16KARA: Because Sarah
- 36:19Lazar...
- 36:19DANI: Because she's trying to make Regina
- 36:21feel better about Angelo being with other people.
- 36:23KARA: Yeah.
- 36:23DANI: And Kathryn's like, I get it. Even the
- 36:27idea of John being with someone else is making
- 36:29me mad. There's all these rumors about him and
- 36:30this reporter. And Regina's like, fuck her. And
- 36:33Kathryn's like, yeah, especially because she's
- 36:35now writing a book about my life.
- 36:35KARA: Regina says,
- 36:39as someone who was that woman, I bet Sarah envied
- 36:43you. And Kathryn goes, I even went to a plastic
- 36:46surgeon. I was so insecure.
- 36:46DANI: What do you think
- 36:48she was trying to get done?
- 36:48KARA: I don't know. Nose?
- 36:51The face is perfect.
- 36:51DANI: Beautiful. Maybe boobs.
- 36:55KARA: I guess.
- 36:55DANI: I mean, Sarah Lazar.
- 36:55KARA: I didn't look,
- 36:58but I believe it.
- 36:58DANI: I was looking. They
- 37:00were crazy.
- 37:00KARA: But then Kathryn's like, Regina,
- 37:03Sarah is writing a book about the switch. And
- 37:06Regina's like, shit, okay. So I think she's like,
- 37:09okay, I'm in.
- 37:09DANI: She's coming around.
- 37:09KARA: Yeah. Now.
- 37:13Toby is filming Bay and Emmett's scene. They're
- 37:16doing a scene where Emmett has a wound on his
- 37:19arm. It looks like he's just been bitten, but
- 37:21it's going to be before he turns into a vampire.
- 37:24DANI: Zombie.
- 37:24KARA: Zombie. It's before he turns into a zombie.
- 37:27And Bay is like a zombie hunter. She finds him
- 37:30and is like, oh no, are you injured?
- 37:30DANI: Okay. Why
- 37:33are they simcomming in Dawn of the Deaf? Why
- 37:36is Bay speaking out loud in a silent film? It
- 37:41gets to a point.
- 37:41KARA: Daphne and Emmett wrote the
- 37:44script, so this is their choice.
- 37:44DANI: Well, and Daphne
- 37:46is like yelling at Wilke earlier, like, you
- 37:49have to be able to sign. It's a silent film.
- 37:52It's signing only. Bay's not even signing all
- 37:55of the words she's saying.
- 37:55KARA: No, she's not.
- 37:55DANI: She's
- 37:58got lines. She's got other lines.
- 37:58KARA: She just touches
- 38:01her arm and goes, are you hurt?
- 38:01DANI: Literally.
- 38:01KARA: That's
- 38:04it.
- 38:04DANI: Anyway. We have to move on from this because
- 38:07it's making me mad.
- 38:07KARA: We cut the scene and I love
- 38:10Kathryn because she jumps in the air and cheers
- 38:12after every take.
- 38:12DANI: She's so cute.
- 38:12KARA: She's so excited.
- 38:15And Betty's like, Mom, you have to stop doing
- 38:18that after every take. And she's like, but it's
- 38:20so fun.
- 38:20DANI: She's a cheerleader.
- 38:20KARA: Simone is in this
- 38:23room. Everyone is in this room. Toby is like.
- 38:26I don't know how to use a camera.
- 38:26DANI: I like how
- 38:28useless he is in this episode, honestly.
- 38:28KARA: And
- 38:31then Simone says, we can create a backup file,
- 38:33which I think you should have done in the first
- 38:34place, but okay. But then Toby's like, okay,
- 38:37so you know way more about cameras than I do.
- 38:39So you will be our new camera operator. Thank you.
- 38:41DANI: She just gets trapped into it.
- 38:41KARA: Yeah, basically.
- 38:44DANI: They just like bully her into staying. And then
- 38:46Emmett, meanwhile, is like, leave. He's like
- 38:49typing out on his phone, like, get out.
- 38:49KARA: He types
- 38:52on his phone, you have to go, please. And Simone's
- 38:55like, I would love to. I personally would love
- 38:58to, but I'm being held hostage now. And then
- 39:00Emmett is signing, and she's like, I don't know
- 39:02what you're talking about.
- 39:02DANI: And then Bay comes
- 39:04over.
- 39:04KARA: And she's like, oh, hey, are you guys chatting?
- 39:07Do you want me to interpret? And they're like,
- 39:08no.
- 39:08DANI: Her sign for interpret was making me mad.
- 39:11KARA: What was she doing?
- 39:11DANI: She was going like this.
- 39:13KARA: Oh, yeah, that's annoying. How would I describe
- 39:15it? Well, it's the F hand shapes and the...
- 39:18DANI: One moves.
- 39:18KARA: Yeah, one moves up and down a little
- 39:21bit.
- 39:21DANI: One moves and one doesn't.
- 39:21KARA: But Bay was doing
- 39:23both.
- 39:23DANI: It's almost Olympics.
- 39:23KARA: She's still learning.
- 39:26DANI: I know. It was just like the irony of her being
- 39:29like, do you want me to interpret? And doing
- 39:31it wrong.
- 39:31KARA: Right, exactly. Kathryn is showing
- 39:34off the blood that she made.
- 39:34DANI: She's so hot and
- 39:38cool. I love her so much. Like her being, and
- 39:41then Melody being like, put some in my coffee.
- 39:43And they're kind of like flirting. It's fun.
- 39:46KARA: They're like moms having fun. I just know Kathryn
- 39:48like looked up a blog. A mommy blogger about
- 39:51how to make chocolate sauce.
- 39:51DANI: Yeah, she says the
- 39:53secret is chocolate sauce. It should be noted
- 39:56throughout this episode, like, Wilke multiple
- 39:57times is, like, drinking the blood, basically.
- 40:01And Toby's like, what are you doing? And it's
- 40:02chocolate sauce.
- 40:02KARA: Regina gets an emergency call
- 40:05from Geraldo. And he's like, you have to do hair
- 40:08for this wedding. Our stylist just canceled.
- 40:10And Regina's like, shit, I gotta go. We really
- 40:12need the money.
- 40:12DANI: I also was like, what? Because
- 40:16she's not paying rent.
- 40:16KARA: I don't know.
- 40:16DANI: Like, how
- 40:19badly do you really need the money?
- 40:19KARA: That's my
- 40:22question. Because all this money to the salon
- 40:25was Angelo's.
- 40:25DANI: And Adrianna works, too.
- 40:25KARA: She's a
- 40:28caretaker.
- 40:28DANI: Yeah. So they're a two-income home
- 40:32with no housing expenses. I just, like, don't
- 40:36think I have a firm grasp on Regina's financial
- 40:39situation. Maybe it's worse than we thought.
- 40:42KARA: They don't tell us, though.
- 40:42DANI: No. It's just for
- 40:44comparison between her and Kathryn. Like, Kathryn
- 40:47spending her whole day being cool mom, throwing
- 40:50this huge film shoot for the kids, making fake
- 40:54blood, being, like, awesome with all the friends.
- 40:57And Regina's literally like, I have to go. I
- 40:59have to go work. We really need the money.
- 40:59KARA: And
- 41:02Daphne's so disappointed.
- 41:02DANI: Yeah. She's really
- 41:04upset. I understand.
- 41:04KARA: Next scene, everyone is
- 41:08in their house, getting ready to shoot another
- 41:11take. Emmett is frantically texting Simone, basically
- 41:14probably saying, you have to leave.
- 41:14DANI: Yeah, literally,
- 41:17they're like, we got to figure this out, blah,
- 41:20blah, blah. Some very incriminating text messages.
- 41:23KARA: Also, they saved each other's numbers with the
- 41:26contact names.
- 41:26DANI: You guys, rookie cheating.
- 41:26KARA: Rookie.
- 41:31DANI: Do better.
- 41:31KARA: I know.
- 41:31DANI: If you're going to do bad,
- 41:33do better.
- 41:33KARA: They're setting up to film in the
- 41:36office because Wilke's playing the guard. And
- 41:39basically he's going to be like fake texting
- 41:41on the phone when Emmett the zombie comes up
- 41:43and attacks him. So, but before that, Simone
- 41:47places her open phone.
- 41:47DANI: Unlocked phone.
- 41:47KARA: Open, unlocked
- 41:51phone on the desk. And it's like, okay, time
- 41:54to film and action. Oh, and Wilke's like, oh,
- 41:57I need a phone to like fake text on. And Bay's
- 41:59like, oh, just use this random phone that's
- 42:02on the desk.
- 42:02DANI: Yeah, just use this random pink
- 42:03phone.
- 42:03KARA: Whatever.
- 42:03DANI: It's clearly not. I just mean,
- 42:06like...
- 42:06KARA: But it's not his. Or it doesn't look
- 42:09like it.
- 42:09DANI: They've taken a lot of care for some
- 42:10of the set dressing, but then the phone looks
- 42:12very out of place.
- 42:12KARA: It does. But anyways, Wilke
- 42:15is, like, fake texting. But then he's not fake
- 42:18texting anymore. As he's reading.
- 42:18DANI: He's reading
- 42:20the camera live in real time the text exchange
- 42:23between Emmett and Simone that basically confirms
- 42:26that they slept together.
- 42:26KARA: Yeah. He turns to Emmett,
- 42:29who's still playing a zombie. And then he turns
- 42:32to Simone, staring straight at the camera. And
- 42:35Daphne's like, what are you doing? Cut. That was
- 42:38a great scene, though.
- 42:38DANI: great scene.
- 42:38KARA: love seeing
- 42:40Austin Butler's face change in real time.
- 42:40DANI: I think
- 42:44he's just like mostly surprised about Emmett. I
- 42:46don't think he's shocked about Simone's behavior
- 42:47at all.
- 42:47KARA: Yeah.
- 42:47DANI: The way he looks at Simone.
- 42:47KARA: But
- 42:51I think he knows so many people are part of this.
- 42:53Toby and Bay.
- 42:53DANI: Yeah, his best friend and his girlfriend's
- 42:56best friend and the drummer of his band and his
- 42:59best friend's little sister.
- 42:59KARA: Yeah, it's just
- 43:01so much. He's like, ah.
- 43:01DANI: Yeah, I would be freaked
- 43:04out too. And then Emmett goes outside.
- 43:04KARA: At the
- 43:07maze garden.
- 43:07DANI: Yeah.
- 43:07KARA: They have a maze garden?
- 43:07DANI: I
- 43:10guess so. Gorgeous. Gorgeous property.
- 43:10KARA: I know.
- 43:14DANI: Gorgeous. Stunning.
- 43:14KARA: He's sitting alone sad. And
- 43:16then Melody comes by.
- 43:16DANI: She's trying to have a
- 43:18Mom moment.
- 43:18KARA: Yeah, and she goes, are you okay?
- 43:21DANI: And he does the teenager thing. He's like, fine,
- 43:24stop it. And then he's like, I'm not fine.
- 43:24KARA: He
- 43:27says, stop asking me if I'm okay, which is what
- 43:29everyone says when they're really okay.
- 43:29DANI: So true.
- 43:32KARA: But then he goes, mom, I made a mistake. It was
- 43:35with another girl. And now I ruined everything
- 43:38with Bay. And Bay doesn't know.
- 43:38DANI: Some great acting
- 43:40from Marlee Matlin in this scene.
- 43:40KARA: She goes, I
- 43:44know you've been upset about the custody battle.
- 43:46but you know it wasn't Bay's fault. You're going
- 43:48to have to live with what you did, but you also
- 43:51need to decide if Bay should live with that too.
- 43:53If it was truly a mistake and it will never happen
- 43:55again, is telling Bay going to help? That's for
- 43:58you to decide.
- 43:58DANI: How did you feel about this?
- 43:58KARA: I
- 44:01think Melody's speaking from her perspective
- 44:03because I think Cameron cheated on her.
- 44:03DANI: Interesting.
- 44:07With Olivia?
- 44:07KARA: With Olivia. And I think she alludes
- 44:11to that in one of the earlier episodes. So I think she
- 44:14was kind of like, ignorance is bliss. Look what
- 44:16that got me.
- 44:16DANI: Yeah. Yeah. I think, I mean, this
- 44:20kind of ties back to like, Bay never found out
- 44:23about Emmett and Daphne kissing when they had just
- 44:26started dating. And I think in that scenario,
- 44:29I agree with Melody completely.
- 44:29KARA: Yes.
- 44:29DANI: Like, Bay
- 44:32doesn't need to know about that. It doesn't really
- 44:35affect their relationship. I don't feel that
- 44:37anything was fundamentally broken there.
- 44:37KARA: I agree.
- 44:40DANI: I think now having this kind of secret between
- 44:43them would destroy the relationship with or without
- 44:47Bay knowing, especially because it's someone
- 44:50I still think, I think no matter what, I think
- 44:53she deserves to know. I think once it gets to
- 44:55a place of like sex.
- 44:55KARA: Sex and also I think he
- 44:59did it as an act of retaliation against Bay.
- 45:02DANI: Exactly. And it like changed the whole dynamics
- 45:04around that fight. And she's confused by that.
- 45:07She deserves to know. But I do think that I could
- 45:10see more like I understand where Melody's coming
- 45:12from. I think I could be more on her side if
- 45:15it was truly a stranger. Like if he had met someone
- 45:19completely unrelated to his life and slept with
- 45:22them. I think there's a world where he could
- 45:26be, like, he could reason his way into, like,
- 45:28well, it's never going to happen again and I'm
- 45:30not going to say anything. But the fact that
- 45:31it's Bay's ex-best friend, Daphne's current
- 45:34friend, and Toby's girlfriend.
- 45:34KARA: Like, she's very
- 45:37intertwined with the Kennishes.
- 45:37DANI: There's just
- 45:39no world where that doesn't, even, I guess, so
- 45:43much of...so much of what's wrong with cheating,
- 45:46in my opinion, is the betrayal and making the
- 45:50other person feel like a fool or making a fool
- 45:53of that other person. And so in a world where
- 45:55she's having to look Simone in the face every
- 45:59day and Simone knows and Bay doesn't know, that
- 46:03itself is, I think, mostly the cruelty of it.
- 46:05KARA: That's so true. They go to the same school.
- 46:05DANI: Yeah.
- 46:08That's the violation. Obviously, there is the
- 46:10broken monogamy of it all and that bothers me
- 46:14a little bit less than the fact that there are
- 46:18so many people involved. It's just this big secret
- 46:21like that's gonna be hanging over their relationship
- 46:24and to deny her the knowledge of it is like, that's
- 46:28what's fucked up I think.
- 46:28KARA: I think Melody also knows
- 46:31that she cannot tell Emmett what to do.
- 46:31DANI: No, I think
- 46:35she says the right- she definitely can't tell
- 46:37him what to do but I don't know.
- 46:37KARA: Because I feel
- 46:39like Emmett is never receptive to what his mom
- 46:42tells him.
- 46:42DANI: No, that's true. But I feel like what
- 46:44she ends up saying leads him to make the choices
- 46:47he makes later in this episode. And I don't agree
- 46:50with that.
- 46:50KARA: Which is to not tell Bay.
- 46:50DANI: Which is
- 46:51to not tell Bay yet. I really thought this episode
- 46:53ended with him telling Bay.
- 46:53KARA: Me too.
- 46:53DANI: But it doesn't.
- 46:56KARA: Because it really builds up. And then he's like,
- 46:57everything's fine.
- 46:57DANI: Yeah.
- 46:57KARA: Yeah. You're right.
- 47:00Simone now is grabbing a snack. She's eating
- 47:04some zombie fingers at the dining room table.
- 47:06And Wilke confronts her. And apparently there
- 47:09were rumors already that Simone had a boy in
- 47:11her room. So this just kind of adds to that.
- 47:14But Simone immediately confesses. And she's like,
- 47:17it was a mistake. I was sad and I was drunk.
- 47:18Please don't tell anyone. And she says, we shouldn't
- 47:21blow something out of proportion over something
- 47:23that meant nothing. And then Wilke says, but
- 47:25Toby is my best friend. And what about Bay? And
- 47:28then Simone is begging him. Yeah.
- 47:28DANI: I get it. She's
- 47:32already the villain.
- 47:32KARA: She is. Now we're filming
- 47:34the scene where Bay has to shoot Emmett the zombie.
- 47:38Emmett plays a great dead guy, I will say. He's
- 47:41on the floor, mouth open, eyes open. It's really
- 47:43good.
- 47:43DANI: Yeah.
- 47:43KARA: And that's a wrap.
- 47:43DANI: That's a wrap
- 47:46on Dawn of the Deaf. I wish we could see it.
- 47:49KARA: I know. I wish they would have just added in
- 47:51a little post-credits. Or even while the credits
- 47:55run. Like, show us the clips that they quote
- 47:57filmed. I don't know.
- 47:57KARA: That would have been so
- 47:58good.
- 47:58DANI: That would have been fun.
- 47:58KARA: Yeah, while the
- 48:00film wraps up, Melody comes in with a cake with
- 48:03a zombie hand coming out of the cake.
- 48:03DANI: So cute.
- 48:06KARA: It's really cute.
- 48:06DANI: And then Bay says to Emmett,
- 48:09no SimCom for once. Like, it wasn't my idea,
- 48:13I promise. Like, so you can sign without speaking.
- 48:17KArA: So you can sign. And then Toby's like, Wilke,
- 48:20come join us. We're all going to have cake and
- 48:21whatnot. And Wilke's like. Sorry, I have homework.
- 48:24I need to go. And Toby says, stay, Simone is
- 48:28blowing off homework, whatever. And Wilke says,
- 48:30well, Simone can get away with it.
- 48:30DANI: While that's
- 48:32all going down, Daphne's having her own like
- 48:34little quiet moment on the grass, taking it all
- 48:38in.
- 48:38KARA: Sitting outside alone in the dark.
- 48:38DANI: Yeah.
- 48:41And Regina comes back and she's like, oh, I missed
- 48:46it. I missed everything. And Daphne's like, yep,
- 48:49you really did.
- 48:49KARA: And Regina goes, I'm sorry, I
- 48:52couldn't be that mom that gets you the fog machine
- 48:55and the big fan and the chocolate blood.
- 48:55DANI: Stop
- 48:58putting it on Daphne to have to, like, hype you
- 49:01up.
- 49:01KARA: I know. And Daphne goes, Mom, it's not about
- 49:04the money.
- 49:04DANI: Yeah, she's like, it's not about the
- 49:06stuff. It's like being here and realizing that
- 49:10you kind of robbed me of this entire childhood
- 49:13I was supposed to have. And she says, like, I
- 49:16don't want to be mad at you my whole life. But,
- 49:17like, what the fuck am I supposed to do here?
- 49:20KARA: Yeah. And she said, it's not that you're a bad
- 49:22mom. You're a great mom. And you told me I can
- 49:25do anything with my life. But why did you think
- 49:27I couldn't handle the switch?
- 49:27DANI: Yeah.
- 49:27KARA: And Regina
- 49:29says, but you were three when the switch happened.
- 49:32And Daphne goes, but what about when I was, like,
- 49:35five or seven or ten? And Regina says, she kind
- 49:38of confesses, like, I don't think I could have
- 49:40handled it.
- 49:40DANI: And that's totally true.
- 49:40KARA: She couldn't
- 49:44have.
- 49:44DANI: No, she doesn't even like sharing Daphne
- 49:46with them now.
- 49:46KARA: No. But Daphne, yeah, Daphne says,
- 49:49I have been trying to be okay with this, but
- 49:52there's so many memories here. Like at the aviary
- 49:55and the pool.
- 49:55DANI: Yeah, and she's like, all the family
- 49:57vacations I could have, I should have been on
- 50:00that I wasn't. Like, all the holidays.
- 50:00KARA: And Regina
- 50:04says, I'm gonna go.
- 50:04DANI: Yeah, Regina literally is
- 50:06like, All right, I gotta, I, she's definitely
- 50:10running away, but I think she's trying to be
- 50:11like, I'm going to remove myself from this situation.
- 50:14You should go inside and have cake with your
- 50:16real family. Like, that's like the way she frames
- 50:18it.
- 50:18KARA: Kind of.
- 50:18DANI: So she dips out.
- 50:18KARA: But she doesn't
- 50:21let Daphne finish her thoughts.
- 50:21DANI: No.
- 50:21KARA: It was not
- 50:25my favorite.
- 50:25DANI: She like, she still can't handle
- 50:27it now.
- 50:27KARA: No, she can't. Kathryn is in the kitchen
- 50:30cleaning up. No one is helping her.
- 50:30DANI: But Regina
- 50:32comes in and Regina helps, kind of. Yeah, she
- 50:36makes a big show of taking plates out of Kathryn's
- 50:38hands and putting them in the sink.
- 50:38KARA: Okay, great.
- 50:41DANI: But Regina's like, I'll do the book. That's what
- 50:43she says. Or she's like, I'll help. Like, I'll
- 50:45cooperate.
- 50:45KARA: Yes.
- 50:45DANI: So Kathryn's very happy about
- 50:49that. And then Kathryn goes upstairs and is
- 50:52like, anyway, fuck you, John. Regina's going
- 50:54to help me because she wants me to kick Sarah
- 50:56Lazar's ass. And John's like, whoa. And then
- 51:00Kathryn's like, and also fuck you. And then
- 51:02John is like, I'm going to go sleep downstairs.
- 51:04Kind of crazy.
- 51:04KARA: As he's going downstairs, he bumps
- 51:07into Bay, who's on her way to take Emmett home.
- 51:10And Bay asks, is everything okay with you and
- 51:12mom? And John says, your mom and I are going
- 51:15through something, but it's going to be fine.
- 51:17We're committed to each other. And when you're
- 51:18committed to each other, you work things out.
- 51:21And you can see Bay really internalizing and
- 51:24absorbing this.
- 51:24DANI: Yeah. And then Regina goes back
- 51:28outside. Daphne's sitting on the stairwell. It's
- 51:31not that big of a house. I love the way that
- 51:33they, like, are somehow missing each other.
- 51:33KARA: Yeah.
- 51:35DANI: Whatever.
- 51:35KARA: They both say they can't sleep, but
- 51:38neither of them are wearing PJs.
- 51:38DANI: No.
- 51:38KARA: No one's
- 51:41cozy.
- 51:41DANI: No. Yeah, they didn't even try.
- 51:41KARA: No.
- 51:41DANI: But
- 51:44right as they're like, I can't sleep, the song
- 51:47that starts.
- 51:47KARA: I wrote this. [Kara sings] When you can't sleep,
- 51:50when you count sheep.
- 51:50DANI: God, it's so on the nose.
- 51:53KARA: It's very Love is Blind.
- 51:53DANI: It's very Love is Blind.
- 51:56Anyway, they're finally like, you know what?
- 51:59Let's go for a swim.
- 51:59KARA: Let's make our own memories
- 52:01on this property.
- 52:01DANI: Kind of weird. Again, I don't
- 52:05feel that Daphne and Regina aren't the people
- 52:07that need to be making memories here. They already
- 52:10have memories. That's like the whole point of
- 52:12them living here is like Daphne should go swim
- 52:15with Kathryn.
- 52:15KARA: She should make memories with
- 52:17her biological family. She has so many memories
- 52:20with Regina.
- 52:20DANI: Right. And Regina should go swim
- 52:22with Bay or like, you know, like it was kind
- 52:24of weird. I think they wanted it to- they wanted
- 52:27us to be moved. And I wasn't.
- 52:27KARA: I was not moved.
- 52:30I also wanted to just add that Regina does a
- 52:33cannonball and it's in slow motion.
- 52:33DANI: Thank you.
- 52:33KARA: That's
- 52:36it. Because it was
- 52:38hot, too?
- 52:38KARA: No.
- 52:38DANI: Just because you just wanted to
- 52:41make sure.
- 52:41KARA: I just thought that was a funny film
- 52:42choice.
- 52:42DANI: Just for the record.
- 52:42KARA: Yeah. Why is it
- 52:44in slo-mo? It's funny.
- 52:44DANI: It is funny.
- 52:44KARA: Thank you.
- 52:47But yeah, Bay and Emmett, the car is, like, pulled
- 52:49over to the side. They're making out, but you
- 52:51can tell he's not. His heart's not in it.
- 52:51DANI: No,
- 52:54because he keeps flashing back to him sleeping
- 52:57with Simone again. Jump scare.
- 52:57KARA: And Bay's like what's
- 53:01wrong? Did you hate your birthday?
- 53:01DANI: she just says
- 53:04like one minute you're here and the next you're
- 53:06I don't know where. It was honestly when you texted
- 53:10me like there's a twilight reference in this
- 53:11episode, I thought you were talking about this
- 53:13scene because it's very much giving in New Moon
- 53:16when Bella and Edward are making out on her birthday
- 53:19and he's being weird and she's like what's wrong
- 53:21and he won't tell her and then the next day he
- 53:24abandons her in the forest.
- 53:24KARA: Extremely specific.
- 53:27We can get really deep into Twilight references
- 53:29if we try.
- 53:29DANI: The parallels are just so clear.
- 53:29KARA: I
- 53:32know.
- 53:32DANI: Anyway, he's brooding and she's like, we've
- 53:37gotten through everything. Like, what is it?
- 53:40KARA: We've gotten through the deaf-hearing thing.
- 53:43I don't know if that's something you get through.
- 53:45DANI: I know. I think that's an ongoing struggle.
- 53:45KARA: As
- 53:48someone who's married to a hearing person. The
- 53:50Ty thing. We got through the custody thing.
- 53:53Oh, my God. They've been through so much.
- 53:53DANI: It's
- 53:55been like two weeks.
- 53:55KARA: We've said, I love you.
- 53:57What's left for us to get through? And you can
- 54:00see she's really internalizing John's comment
- 54:02about commitment.
- 54:02DANI: Yeah.
- 54:02KARA: She's like, I'm committed.
- 54:05DANI: Yeah.
- 54:05KARA: Like, I want to get through it with you.
- 54:08DANI: She says, either you're with me or you're not.
- 54:10KARA: Yeah.
- 54:10DANI: And he says, I'm with you. End of episode.
- 54:14KARA: It makes it look like he's going to confess.
- 54:17DANI: Yeah.
- 54:17KARA: Like the music swells, but then it.
- 54:19He just says, I'm with you.
- 54:19DANI: I think because of
- 54:22what his mom said. Like, I think he's like, I
- 54:24can keep this from her. But he can't. And I think
- 54:27if he had been very clear with Melody, like,
- 54:29I slept with Simone, the girl that is here, that
- 54:32is friends with Daphne, that is ex-friends with
- 54:35Bay, that is dating Toby. I think Melody would
- 54:37have been like, dog, yeah, this is done. Like,
- 54:41you got to tell her before she finds out some
- 54:43other way.
- 54:43KARA: That's true. Melody doesn't know who
- 54:45Simone is, first of all. And then also Emmett just
- 54:47said, I slept with a girl.
- 54:47DANI: Yeah. So for all she
- 54:50knows, it's a stranger. But I think that her
- 54:53advice would have been very different had she
- 54:54realized the context. Emmett, what are you doing?
- 54:59KARA: I know. Does he later confess to Bay?
- 54:59DANI: She finds
- 55:03out.
- 55:03KARA: I know she finds out, but I just don't remember
- 55:05how she finds out.
- 55:05DANI: It might be that Simone tells
- 55:08Toby. Because Simone is the queen of confessing
- 55:12before she gets caught to make herself look better.
- 55:14Like, think about the watch situation. I think
- 55:17she does exactly what she did with the watch
- 55:19with this situation.
- 55:19KARA: I'm just trying to rack
- 55:22my brain.
- 55:22DANI: The next episode is when it happens
- 55:24because they're all at like prom or homecoming
- 55:26or something. Yeah.
- 55:26KARA: I love when they have an
- 55:29event. Well, thanks for listening, guys.
- 55:29DANI: Oh,
- 55:32my God.
- 55:32KARA: Jinx.
- 55:32DANI: Jinx.
- 55:32KARA: Bye.
