- 0:05Speaker 2: Listener discretion is advised. The World's of Vigeon Podcasts Welcome
- 0:15Speaker 2: to Patriots Unfiltered. First public practice will be July twenty fifth,
- 0:22Speaker 2: and so we're looking forward to that. Not really, I'm
- 0:24Speaker 2: not really looking forward to that. I'm looking forward to it,
- 0:27Speaker 2: but I don't want it to come fast easy.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Michael Scott.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Yeah, that is saying that.
- 0:31Speaker 1: It seems like over the weekend and he had a
- 0:34Speaker 1: he did have a sleeve on his right or left leg,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and I can't one of the two. Why do you
- 0:39Speaker 1: think I had a retort to that?
- 0:40Speaker 2: No, I just thought, are you disappointed that you think
- 0:43Speaker 2: it's going to get done?
- 0:44Speaker 1: Sir? Why do you do that?
- 0:45Speaker 2: If soccer was our number one sport, we would dominate?
- 0:49Speaker 4: Why do we say things like no, if culture? What
- 0:52Speaker 4: I'm saying is if culture because it because of the game,
- 0:59Speaker 4: but like there's such a would be the best? Yeah,
- 1:04Speaker 4: just because of numbers, not because we're better human telling.
- 1:07Speaker 2: This is the thing about Holland is is when he
- 1:09Speaker 2: starts running that you're like, oh.
- 1:11Speaker 5: My god, I kind of like bent over a little bit.
- 1:13Speaker 2: His size, like, it's just the speed, it's it's incredible.
- 1:19Speaker 6: This is Patriot's Unfiltered, presented by Toyota's official website for
- 1:23Speaker 6: deals by a Toyota dot com.
- 1:27Speaker 2: All right, welcome the Patriots Unfiltered. It is Thursday here
- 1:31Speaker 2: at Julett Stadium, and we're in between matches for the
- 1:35Speaker 2: FIFA World Cup, so we get to have a normal
- 1:38Speaker 2: show at our normal time. Good to do. So it's Evan,
- 1:41Speaker 2: it's Paul, it's me, it's Deuce, it's Alex and Alex
- 1:44Speaker 2: in the booth. So Alex chirped in yesterday and I
- 1:49Speaker 2: don't know if people knew who the voice was, and
- 1:51Speaker 2: I didn't get a chance to say that was Alex.
- 1:53Speaker 2: So so if you hear a voice that you don't recognize,
- 1:56Speaker 2: it's Alex the booth. Yeah, there he is.
- 1:59Speaker 7: Somehow he's been here twenty minutes. Every time he talks
- 2:01Speaker 7: into the microphone it works.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah, Matt like hit the button, He's like, oh so
- 2:09Speaker 2: all right, So not much is changing Patriots World since
- 2:14Speaker 2: the last time we had a show two days ago
- 2:16Speaker 2: or catch twenty two. Yes yesterday, oh, yes, right, yesterday,
- 2:20Speaker 2: this Wednesday. How was the show with Barth.
- 2:23Speaker 1: It was good. It was it was quiet quiet which one.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we did. We did three up, three up,
- 2:30Speaker 1: three down, three up, three down from from the Spring,
- 2:33Speaker 1: and uh, you know, we had some good good talk
- 2:37Speaker 1: about you know, how good Drake may looked, how good A. J.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Brown looks, the gay backus thing. And then we get
- 2:44Speaker 1: to the last one and Barth goes Bryce Berengerg and
- 2:48Speaker 1: we went on an old rant about the punters and
- 2:50Speaker 1: they both thought that that was okay. I just think
- 2:53Speaker 1: it was on brand. Yeah, that's the show.
- 2:56Speaker 8: Well, it's more of the tone of just like and
- 2:57Speaker 8: of course, you know I've got to put baard like
- 3:00Speaker 8: talk about him like.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Of course we we you know, we dedicated ourselves to
- 3:06Speaker 1: being that show that talks about the ninetieth guy on
- 3:08Speaker 1: the roster. You might not hear it from everybody else.
- 3:12Speaker 1: And Understandablyie, you've made yourself a niche show if you
- 3:17Speaker 1: want to hear about Laurence Mentz and you know, the
- 3:21Speaker 1: everybody down there, we got you covered.
- 3:23Speaker 5: How much how many minutes did you do on the
- 3:25Speaker 5: tryout punter that was there?
- 3:26Speaker 1: We talked about the try out punter. We talked a
- 3:28Speaker 1: little bit about you know, how both of us were
- 3:31Speaker 1: mildly surprised that they didn't bring in at least official
- 3:35Speaker 1: UDFA signing to compete with Baringer. It's been kind of
- 3:39Speaker 1: more of a try out thing that they've been doing instead.
- 3:43Speaker 1: But we both felt that Barringer probably deserved to be
- 3:47Speaker 1: pushed a little bit after last year. It was a
- 3:49Speaker 1: little bit of a down year for him.
- 3:50Speaker 2: And did you dominate the show?
- 3:52Speaker 1: Did I?
- 3:53Speaker 2: Because Darius writes an he says, I'm at work driving
- 3:56Speaker 2: on the forklift yesterday, listening on the pod and you
- 4:00Speaker 2: said the dominatrix line. I let out the biggest laugh.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I had to stop working for a second because I
- 4:05Speaker 2: had tears in my eyes. I was not ready for that.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Okay, I thought, literally, that's just Fred and Fred.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yeah, so you didn't tell Alex I said that he
- 4:16Speaker 2: was here. He was locked in.
- 4:19Speaker 5: He was diagramming the punts from Bearinger.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yeah, going over his hang times sor right.
- 4:25Speaker 2: He's very busy.
- 4:26Speaker 1: It was like the coders on the social network.
- 4:29Speaker 2: All right. So yeah, last show, we talked a little
- 4:32Speaker 2: bit about Patriots, a lot about World Cup. We talked
- 4:36Speaker 2: a little bit about movies. But Alex is here, anything
- 4:39Speaker 2: on your mind?
- 4:41Speaker 9: I came in to defend my sport after listening to
- 4:44Speaker 9: you guys yesterday, I tried. No, I actually didn't. I
- 4:48Speaker 9: actually didn't necessarily have a problem with anything I said.
- 4:51Speaker 9: There was some good dialogue though about like soccer in America,
- 4:54Speaker 9: and you all were trying to make but we're all
- 4:56Speaker 9: trying to make different points, and it was all part
- 4:59Speaker 9: of like I think, the same bigger pictures probably probably.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Two emails that came in this morning that I think
- 5:05Speaker 2: are pretty good. Uh, this is from JK and B Cases.
- 5:10Speaker 2: I usually don't write in, but I had to ev
- 5:12Speaker 2: enforce my hand. He said that even if soccer were
- 5:16Speaker 2: more popular in the USR, athletes still wouldn't be as
- 5:18Speaker 2: good as the rest of the world. Does he believe
- 5:20Speaker 2: women's soccer holds any significance because that seems like a
- 5:24Speaker 2: pretty obvious counter In the US, soccer is one of
- 5:26Speaker 2: the top sports for women, maybe six for men, and
- 5:30Speaker 2: the result is consistent dominance at the international level. It's
- 5:35Speaker 2: what happens when a country's top athletes actually choose to
- 5:38Speaker 2: play a sport. So if the premise is that popularity
- 5:41Speaker 2: and athlete participation don't matter, women's soccer kind of blows
- 5:45Speaker 2: that up. So I don't know if you agree with
- 5:47Speaker 2: the premist. Are the top women athletes playing soccer?
- 5:51Speaker 1: Well, I would just say I would just say that
- 5:54Speaker 1: it was just all I was. I just don't think
- 5:56Speaker 1: it's as simple as that, as.
- 5:58Speaker 9: Simple as that, because penny countries you see playing in
- 6:00Speaker 9: the World Cup don't even necessarily let their women play sports,
- 6:06Speaker 9: but men aren't. Really, I think it's a very American
- 6:08Speaker 9: thing to push little girls into sports, and it's great.
- 6:11Speaker 9: I don't think you necessarily have that same culture all
- 6:14Speaker 9: around the world. And regarding the women's national team, I
- 6:17Speaker 9: think a lot of countries are starting to catch up.
- 6:19Speaker 9: Whereas we were dominant for my entire lifetime. I think
- 6:22Speaker 9: they're closing the gap quite a bit. The US women are,
- 6:28Speaker 9: But I think the biggest difference between men's soccer in
- 6:31Speaker 9: the US and say Brazil or Europe is it's almost
- 6:36Speaker 9: like watching two different sports in a way. I think
- 6:39Speaker 9: Americans really value physicality and athleticism and speed, and sometimes
- 6:44Speaker 9: like there's been years where you watch like say Brazil
- 6:46Speaker 9: play and the skill level and the technicalness and the
- 6:50Speaker 9: systems they have in place, and like the ball control
- 6:53Speaker 9: these guys have is so beyond anything we could ever
- 6:57Speaker 9: achieve if our kids, like our kids would have to
- 7:00Speaker 9: be coming out of the womb and just bored out
- 7:04Speaker 9: of their minds every single day playing soccer with each
- 7:06Speaker 9: other in the street, because that's how these kids do it.
- 7:09Speaker 9: We have iPads, we have piano lessons, and like, our
- 7:14Speaker 9: kids are so overscheduled. I think they just don't have
- 7:17Speaker 9: time to be bored. And like a lot of these
- 7:19Speaker 9: kids in like these countries, they grow up poor, they
- 7:22Speaker 9: grow up just playing with each other in the streets,
- 7:24Speaker 9: and like five minutes a day touching a soccer ball
- 7:27Speaker 9: can really make a difference over time. We just like
- 7:30Speaker 9: schedule the crap out of our kids. There's so many
- 7:32Speaker 9: factors that go into why we are not like these
- 7:36Speaker 9: great powers.
- 7:37Speaker 2: But I and I think you made the point you
- 7:40Speaker 2: made earlier about a lot of these other countries. It
- 7:43Speaker 2: wasn't until like the last twenty thirty years or so
- 7:47Speaker 2: where they actually encourage women's sports. Yeah, they didn't have
- 7:50Speaker 2: programs for women to play sports.
- 7:52Speaker 1: So I actually think that's part of the reason.
- 7:55Speaker 7: First I would I would just say yes when we
- 7:57Speaker 7: talked about a lot of this stuff yesterday, And I
- 8:00Speaker 7: want to speak for myself.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I did not.
- 8:02Speaker 7: I was this was not a critical of soccer thing,
- 8:05Speaker 7: Like you know, I'm not the hugest soccer fan out there,
- 8:08Speaker 7: but that's but that's not what we were talking about yesterday.
- 8:10Speaker 1: We were talking.
- 8:11Speaker 7: About why we think the US isn't a power in soccer.
- 8:15Speaker 7: So like I just you know, like you were defending
- 8:17Speaker 7: your sport. No need because I was not taking any shots.
- 8:21Speaker 9: I don't think you guys were either. It was just
- 8:22Speaker 9: you were all right when I was listening to it.
- 8:24Speaker 9: The women, it's not one thing.
- 8:26Speaker 7: I think is really interesting and you are absolutely right
- 8:29Speaker 7: in that the world is now starting to catch up.
- 8:31Speaker 1: And that was my.
- 8:34Speaker 7: You know, admittedly snarky response to like a lot of
- 8:38Speaker 7: the like the women's soccer dominance was like, well, one
- 8:41Speaker 7: of like four teams that play.
- 8:43Speaker 1: And by the way, I love hockey.
- 8:44Speaker 7: I would say the same thing about women's hockey, and
- 8:47Speaker 7: it's Canada in the US.
- 8:48Speaker 9: The greatest soccer player female of all time to me
- 8:51Speaker 9: is Brazilian Mark.
- 8:53Speaker 10: You know, it's marked that and it's me a ham
- 8:54Speaker 10: for me.
- 8:55Speaker 9: So I just think that if other it'll be interesting
- 8:59Speaker 9: to see the women so and I.
- 9:01Speaker 7: Also think that part of the reason why the US.
- 9:03Speaker 7: I mean, I think that the world is catching up
- 9:05Speaker 7: because they're now starting to put more resources into the
- 9:08Speaker 7: women's game internationally as well. But I also think your
- 9:13Speaker 7: point about in America, there's been this ground swell of
- 9:16Speaker 7: pushing young girls into sports, and you know what, it's
- 9:22Speaker 7: the same problem because now you don't have to just
- 9:25Speaker 7: play soccer anymore, because that's.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Not the only option you have.
- 9:28Speaker 7: Now we have a WNBA, but we have a PWHL,
- 9:32Speaker 7: and I'm telling you the town's going to get water down.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Except for individual sports, I think all women dominate all
- 9:38Speaker 2: team sports.
- 9:39Speaker 1: The gap in basketball is like what the men used
- 9:43Speaker 1: to be like years ago. But I think resources is
- 9:47Speaker 1: the big word. Like to the emailer, the US women's
- 9:51Speaker 1: team actually has talked about this openly that their resources
- 9:54Speaker 1: and the things at their disposal pale in comparison to
- 9:57Speaker 1: these other countries because of how much we invent women's
- 10:00Speaker 1: sports in this country. So I don't think it's that's
- 10:03Speaker 1: exactly apples to apples, And.
- 10:05Speaker 9: Like a little girl in Spain isn't turning twelve years
- 10:08Speaker 9: old being recognized as like a talent prodigy and getting
- 10:13Speaker 9: sent to real Madrid Academy or to like Liverpool Academy
- 10:17Speaker 9: as a fourteen year old, you know, like for the boys,
- 10:20Speaker 9: that's what they do.
- 10:21Speaker 10: Like Rinaldo left this.
- 10:22Speaker 9: Little island of Madda in the middle of the Atlantic
- 10:25Speaker 9: Ocean to go to sport thing when he was like
- 10:28Speaker 9: barely a teenager, you know what I mean. Like that's
- 10:31Speaker 9: just not the same culture here for our men and
- 10:33Speaker 9: also for women around around the world.
- 10:35Speaker 8: I think you've got an interesting perspective too, because you
- 10:37Speaker 8: grew up in a place in Massachusetts that's kind of
- 10:39Speaker 8: a soccer hotbed. Like what I was talking about yesterday
- 10:42Speaker 8: that there wasn't a lot of like in the community,
- 10:44Speaker 8: but you grew up in a place.
- 10:45Speaker 9: Where in the weirdest place ever, honestly, because there were
- 10:49Speaker 9: so many Portuguese immigrants, so many Polish immigrants, so many
- 10:52Speaker 9: Turkish immigrants. Like my dad didn't know English when he
- 10:55Speaker 9: was little and going to school. He made friends through
- 10:58Speaker 9: playing soccer, and my hometown always had such dominant soccer
- 11:02Speaker 9: teams and really like I would go watch the Ludlow
- 11:05Speaker 9: boys play varsity growing up, Like as a kid, that's
- 11:08Speaker 9: what you did. You went to go see just kind
- 11:10Speaker 9: of like Friday night lights on a much smaller sced
- 11:12Speaker 9: like scale with soccer.
- 11:14Speaker 10: It was the thing you did.
- 11:15Speaker 9: And I would watch the Ludlow boys compete and just
- 11:18Speaker 9: pass circles around, say like Long Meadow or Rival who
- 11:22Speaker 9: their style is more like kick and run and physical chase,
- 11:26Speaker 9: right exactly, And in Ludlow you kind of saw, like
- 11:29Speaker 9: on a much smaller levels, like a microcosm of the
- 11:32Speaker 9: difference between the really skillful style that's passed down from
- 11:36Speaker 9: like our parents who grew up in Europe right to
- 11:39Speaker 9: like long Meadow. It's all American kids, and long Meadow
- 11:41Speaker 9: is just the You could substitute it with Minutchog whatever
- 11:44Speaker 9: school you want, but there's just a difference in the
- 11:47Speaker 9: style of game we play and the level of coaching
- 11:49Speaker 9: you get at like a very.
- 11:51Speaker 2: There is such a properational level, you know, the environment
- 11:55Speaker 2: in which you grow up like Dutchbery, mass for a
- 11:58Speaker 2: long time was like the hotbed of lacrosse. Ye, like
- 12:03Speaker 2: when no one in Massachusetts lacrosse because their parents their
- 12:07Speaker 2: father played lacrosse, and so it was just like how
- 12:10Speaker 2: you grew up.
- 12:11Speaker 9: And our club model too, like you start playing instructional,
- 12:14Speaker 9: but very quickly it turns into like that pay to
- 12:17Speaker 9: play like basketball, kids can just you don't have to
- 12:21Speaker 9: have a lot of means or resources to just have
- 12:23Speaker 9: a basketball and play with your neighborhood friends and you
- 12:26Speaker 9: can get really good that way.
- 12:27Speaker 10: You know.
- 12:28Speaker 9: Kids just aren't playing soccer that way here in the
- 12:30Speaker 9: US for fun, for leisure with their friends in a
- 12:33Speaker 9: park like unorganized, you know.
- 12:35Speaker 10: And then now.
- 12:36Speaker 9: Parents are just totally like trapped by the club sports
- 12:40Speaker 9: model across everything, and it's you know, you wean out
- 12:43Speaker 9: a lot of talent that way.
- 12:44Speaker 5: Funny you say that.
- 12:45Speaker 8: I remember when living in California seeing plenty of pickup
- 12:48Speaker 8: soccer games a bunch, you know, just old dudes getting together.
- 12:52Speaker 8: You know, it's it's you know, it's different parts. You
- 12:54Speaker 8: find these little pockets of soccer obsessed.
- 12:56Speaker 2: But it's well you see that here in Boston, like
- 13:00Speaker 2: older men playing soccer.
- 13:03Speaker 1: That's what you see.
- 13:04Speaker 9: Is has probably, in my opinion, some of the best
- 13:08Speaker 9: soccer programs throughout like the country. I think Massachusetts especially
- 13:13Speaker 9: for women, great great soccer program.
- 13:16Speaker 2: The men to the Over the Hill League for soccer,
- 13:19Speaker 2: which is I think it's the largest, uh league, you know,
- 13:24Speaker 2: non professional or semi professional league in the country. It's
- 13:29Speaker 2: called the Over the Hill.
- 13:29Speaker 1: League's I mean it's good.
- 13:31Speaker 7: It's good perspective on the whole thing because and I
- 13:34Speaker 7: said it, Yeah, I gave you my thoughts. But like
- 13:36Speaker 7: I admitted right up front, it's a very simplistic way
- 13:39Speaker 7: to look at it because it's all of these things
- 13:43Speaker 7: mixed into one. Like I would push back on a
- 13:45Speaker 7: lot of the stuff, you know.
- 13:46Speaker 1: If if this was just like a soccer show. Obviously
- 13:48Speaker 1: it's not.
- 13:49Speaker 7: But like all of those things about your attention span
- 13:52Speaker 7: and your overscheduling exists in all the sports, but it
- 13:56Speaker 7: only somehow is holding soccer back.
- 13:58Speaker 8: Well, I think you made a good point Paul about
- 14:00Speaker 8: just women's sports in general, and flag football is a
- 14:02Speaker 8: huge thing too.
- 14:03Speaker 5: I mean, Rhode Island's trying to get.
- 14:04Speaker 7: That a million different things now because Alex is right,
- 14:07Speaker 7: there's a groundswell of you know, Title nine has now
- 14:10Speaker 7: been around thirty plus years or whatever it is, forty years.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Yeah, the style of play is a good point too,
- 14:17Speaker 1: because that was kind of what I was trying to say. Yes,
- 14:20Speaker 1: that's the biggest is saying, yeah, when I watched the
- 14:22Speaker 1: men's team like play, I never watched the US men's
- 14:26Speaker 1: team and say our athletes are worse than the teams
- 14:29Speaker 1: are going up against. They're worse at soccer. They're not,
- 14:32Speaker 1: they're not.
- 14:32Speaker 7: But I think you're using my term of athletes literally
- 14:36Speaker 7: like run, jump, you know, lift whatever. Yeah, I'm talking
- 14:40Speaker 7: about just talent. Okay, talented, but people. But we need
- 14:44Speaker 7: to do as.
- 14:45Speaker 1: You say, like it needs to be developed.
- 14:47Speaker 9: If we had our best athletes Lebron, Tyreek, et cetera,
- 14:51Speaker 9: we would smoke these people. You still need the IQ
- 14:54Speaker 9: and the skill level. And also, like how many guys
- 14:57Speaker 9: on this screen right now look like Lebron James running
- 14:59Speaker 9: around out there likew.
- 15:03Speaker 1: You know, it's not about size, it's about talent.
- 15:06Speaker 7: And I don't think our most talented people play that sport,
- 15:09Speaker 7: but I.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Don't think we are most talented people coach it or
- 15:12Speaker 1: development either.
- 15:13Speaker 7: So you and Alex are absolutely right about that.
- 15:16Speaker 1: That's the problem is, like I I would you know,
- 15:19Speaker 1: I don't think our issue is is that we're not
- 15:22Speaker 1: athletic enough or we don't have a talent pool that's
- 15:24Speaker 1: large enough. I think our issue is is that we
- 15:27Speaker 1: up until about a year and a half ago when
- 15:29Speaker 1: they hired a guy from Argentina to coach our national team,
- 15:33Speaker 1: we we had poor coaching, we had poor tactics, we
- 15:36Speaker 1: had poor structure to our program, a lot of those
- 15:40Speaker 1: different types of things, and then you put them in
- 15:42Speaker 1: a program and in a structure that makes sense and
- 15:45Speaker 1: is built around their talent, and they win for to
- 15:48Speaker 1: one in the world.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Over the years, I don't know, And Cinman was one
- 15:57Speaker 2: of the best World Cup cycles that we've had. But
- 16:01Speaker 2: getting back to you can make the argument that in
- 16:04Speaker 2: America we have a larger talent pool than all these
- 16:08Speaker 2: other countries. It's just that they don't grow up in
- 16:12Speaker 2: the culture of soccer like these other places.
- 16:15Speaker 10: Right, And then.
- 16:16Speaker 9: Ludlow, I did you know what I mean? And that's
- 16:18Speaker 9: why you had ninety kids. I make fun of you exactly,
- 16:21Speaker 9: but that's why you had ninety kids at Loud the
- 16:23Speaker 9: high school trying out for the soccer teams, and you like,
- 16:26Speaker 9: we literally had more kids trying out for soccer than
- 16:29Speaker 9: football in some years. You know, it's just that's what
- 16:31Speaker 9: the friends are playing, that's what's around, that's what.
- 16:34Speaker 10: Your dad would It would need to be the whole country.
- 16:37Speaker 10: So I don't think I think we're too far gone.
- 16:39Speaker 9: I think we just have to be happy making little
- 16:41Speaker 9: strides here and there, and well you're.
- 16:43Speaker 5: Talking about the strategy.
- 16:44Speaker 8: I mean not to always tie it back to hockey,
- 16:46Speaker 8: but it's the same thing with USA Hockey, where you know,
- 16:49Speaker 8: it goes.
- 16:49Speaker 5: From a bunch of youth teams dump and chase.
- 16:52Speaker 8: So now we're trying to regroup, we're trying to bring
- 16:54Speaker 8: the puck back, we're trying to cycle it more, we're
- 16:56Speaker 8: trying to make possession not you know, yeah like so
- 17:00Speaker 8: it's you know, but but to Evan's point, when it
- 17:03Speaker 8: starts with USA Hockey at the top, and then it
- 17:05Speaker 8: feeds its way down not just through the you know,
- 17:07Speaker 8: elite national development program, but all of you hockey, you
- 17:10Speaker 8: have coaches going to seminars. This is what we want
- 17:12Speaker 8: to teach. This is you know, and I think the
- 17:15Speaker 8: hope is that you start to see the results. Obviously,
- 17:17Speaker 8: the women's hockey team is you know, way ahead because
- 17:19Speaker 8: of the numbers.
- 17:21Speaker 2: So Chris and Virginia and thank you for your service.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Chris has some interesting stats. He said, you've recently been
- 17:26Speaker 2: talking about why US is not performing right, but your
- 17:29Speaker 2: comparison to elsewhere is grouping whole continents together. Europe has
- 17:33Speaker 2: fifty five countries and only five of them have ever
- 17:36Speaker 2: won a World Cup. When compared individually to peer nations
- 17:39Speaker 2: like Croatia, Uruguay or England, the US is on a
- 17:42Speaker 2: perfectly normal developmental curve. With the twenty twenty six World
- 17:46Speaker 2: Cup on home soil in a rapidly expanding talent pool,
- 17:50Speaker 2: the US is steadily marching toward its first true cyclical peak.
- 17:54Speaker 2: A few points for context. The elite is tiny. Only
- 17:58Speaker 2: eight nations out of over two two hundred in FIFA
- 18:01Speaker 2: have ever won the World Cup.
- 18:02Speaker 1: I mean there's only been like like the World Cup
- 18:05Speaker 1: starting in nineteen thirty and it four and.
- 18:07Speaker 7: Let's not though, let's not like equate. The only way
- 18:12Speaker 7: you're good is if you want a world right out.
- 18:13Speaker 7: But like there's I mean, the US, I believe it is.
- 18:16Speaker 10: Like the best club league in the world with the el.
- 18:21Speaker 7: Yeah, but the US is like seventeenth or eighteenth in
- 18:24Speaker 7: the world rankings. Yeah, so it's not just like eight
- 18:27Speaker 7: teams better better than But when you're comparing them to well,
- 18:31Speaker 7: let me let me finish to countries that are the
- 18:32Speaker 7: size of our states.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Right, the US is ahead of most europe South American countries.
- 18:37Speaker 2: The US men's national team has reached the World Cup
- 18:40Speaker 2: knockout rounds ninety four oh two, ten, fourteen, twenty two.
- 18:44Speaker 2: This is a more consistent knockout stage record over the
- 18:48Speaker 2: last thirty years than traditional Europeans sides like Poland, Sweden,
- 18:52Speaker 2: or even South America's Ecuador and Colombia. Even Paul's Italy
- 18:56Speaker 2: was knocked out in the group stage in ten and fourteen,
- 18:59Speaker 2: so just hasn't qualified.
- 19:02Speaker 7: Italy didn't even qualify for this World Cup. Who's a
- 19:06Speaker 7: better soccer power? Like right now this year if they
- 19:10Speaker 7: played tomorrow, who do you think would win? I don't
- 19:13Speaker 7: know Italy, They're ranked much higher.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I don't know about that, right I don't know. They
- 19:18Speaker 1: might not Wan.
- 19:18Speaker 7: I'm talking about if there was something on the line
- 19:21Speaker 7: that if the you know, if it was a friendly
- 19:23Speaker 7: or whatever, I don't know what would happen.
- 19:24Speaker 2: But here.
- 19:27Speaker 1: There's no way Italy.
- 19:28Speaker 9: Obviously the US to like a country its size with
- 19:31Speaker 9: its public like Brazil, and also.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Bringing up like Holand in Sweden and Ecuador the size
- 19:38Speaker 1: of like we're trying to compete with Argentina, in Brazil,
- 19:42Speaker 1: in France, in Spain, in Germany, not Ecuador, Like you know,
- 19:47Speaker 1: I I would hope that we're ahead of a country
- 19:50Speaker 1: like Ecuador, Like, no offense to Ecuador, it's just a
- 19:52Speaker 1: tiny country. The US is a top twenty world soccer power.
- 19:57Speaker 7: Like, so it's I'm not comparing them to the ones
- 19:59Speaker 7: that you curistyle that lost seven to one to Germany,
- 20:02Speaker 7: you know, in their first in their World Cup debut, Like, yeah,
- 20:06Speaker 7: they're better than a lot of those countries that are
- 20:09Speaker 7: playing in this World Cup.
- 20:10Speaker 1: There was certainly a lot better than the opponent. I
- 20:13Speaker 1: would just wonder, like, you know, I think the big
- 20:15Speaker 1: question for the US right now is like, is this
- 20:18Speaker 1: this cycle and this team has been touted as like
- 20:22Speaker 1: a golden generation of US soccer? Is this a one off?
- 20:27Speaker 1: Like is it? Or is this a sign that they're
- 20:30Speaker 1: developing talent now that can compete at the top.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I'll close it out, Chris closes it out. As a
- 20:35Speaker 2: brick currently living currently living in the US, I can
- 20:39Speaker 2: assure you that the US approach to soccer is just
- 20:42Speaker 2: as likely to result in future success as anything most
- 20:45Speaker 2: European or South American nations are doing. So that's someone
- 20:48Speaker 2: else's perspective from England, from Europe, from Europe, who's living here.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Now, Yeah, I mean I I appreciate the perspective. It's like,
- 20:57Speaker 1: you know, they even our best team that I think,
- 21:00Speaker 1: there's the most talented team that we've ever fielded. Politics
- 21:04Speaker 1: are best player and polistic barely draws on Ac Milan
- 21:08Speaker 1: like he like and he was hurt a lot of
- 21:10Speaker 1: last year, but like you know, he has a tough
- 21:12Speaker 1: time making their starting eleven sometimes, isn't there.
- 21:14Speaker 7: Some kind of I mean, I don't know enough about this,
- 21:17Speaker 7: but I've just in stuff that I've heard from my
- 21:20Speaker 7: boy Taylor Twelman, Like there's like some politics that go
- 21:23Speaker 7: into some of that stuff.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Yeah, him and the coach, I guess don't get along
- 21:26Speaker 1: great and he was hurt for a little.
- 21:30Speaker 7: They tend to want their guys that they're developing to
- 21:33Speaker 7: be in key roles and key games and whatnot.
- 21:36Speaker 2: So getting back to the coaches that you asked, who
- 21:38Speaker 2: were the.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Coaches, because I feel like we've always had a European coach.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Uh, well, Bruce Arena was the coach.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean Barhalter was the most recent coach. And
- 21:46Speaker 1: that guy stunk, Like we can just where's he from here? America?
- 21:50Speaker 1: Oh yeah, his son actually plays on the team now.
- 21:53Speaker 1: But they he I mean now was a disaster, just
- 21:57Speaker 1: like they got grouped in COPA. They didn't do his
- 22:00Speaker 1: as they should have. In the last World Cup in Qatar,
- 22:02Speaker 1: it was bad. And then now they you know, poach
- 22:05Speaker 1: it took Tottenham really really far in the e PL
- 22:08Speaker 1: and is like considered like a really high end coach,
- 22:11Speaker 1: and I think that you're starting to see some of
- 22:14Speaker 1: that progress being made. But he's only here for this cycle.
- 22:17Speaker 1: He's moving on after this. He's going to coach a
- 22:19Speaker 1: club team after this, and he's only coaching the US
- 22:22Speaker 1: team for one World Cup and then he's done.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Where is the men's national team headquarters?
- 22:28Speaker 1: I think southern California, at least for this World Cup.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I don't know if that's where it is. It's a
- 22:32Speaker 1: permanent I don't know. I don't know. I know that
- 22:35Speaker 1: that's where their base camp is right.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Now because I remember, you know, we went to Germany
- 22:38Speaker 2: and we were at the there that was a facility
- 22:42Speaker 2: and that was a nice place.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, I mean, you know, Bruce Arena is probably
- 22:49Speaker 1: our most famous national team.
- 22:52Speaker 5: Coach, yelled at me and Paul once.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Yeahs soccer.
- 22:57Speaker 10: Inyetteville, Georgia.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Oh okay, okay, so they met Arthur.
- 23:01Speaker 10: Banks Soccer National Training Center.
- 23:03Speaker 5: Arthur Okay, are.
- 23:06Speaker 1: There Banks a big one soccer? He's a big soccer guy.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Socer Actually yeah.
- 23:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I just think of that's slow motion shote.
- 23:17Speaker 7: That was That was a reference to somebody else that
- 23:20Speaker 7: we were talking about previously.
- 23:21Speaker 2: James Pettigrew's on the line. I'm sure he's going to
- 23:23Speaker 2: tell us why we're all wrong. Go ahead, James, especially.
- 23:27Speaker 11: Me not as well. Are you ready for the education?
- 23:30Speaker 3: Now?
- 23:31Speaker 11: There are some solutions at the end, so don't worry.
- 23:33Speaker 11: But there's a model, and there's a nexus in the model,
- 23:36Speaker 11: which is why you guys will never really achieve the
- 23:39Speaker 11: level of other nations. Right, you talk about youth football. Now,
- 23:43Speaker 11: for the core of the England team, the France team,
- 23:47Speaker 11: the Spain team, the good teams, they play their youth
- 23:50Speaker 11: football in the Champions League. Right. You watch the Champions
- 23:53Speaker 11: League and every year there's some seventeen year old I
- 23:57Speaker 11: remember Yarramir Lamar was the last one Barcelona, right, And
- 24:01Speaker 11: these seventeen year olds are playing their youth football in
- 24:04Speaker 11: the finals of the Champions League. And you need a
- 24:06Speaker 11: few of those in your team if you want to win. Now,
- 24:09Speaker 11: how do you get there. Evans sort of touched on it,
- 24:13Speaker 11: Messi started it, but at twelve years old is where
- 24:16Speaker 11: they signed their contracts, right, So Messi was the first
- 24:20Speaker 11: and they had to have a board meeting to check
- 24:22Speaker 11: if it was legal in the EU to bring him over.
- 24:25Speaker 11: But they sign a contract with you at twelve and
- 24:27Speaker 11: your family goes over, right, and then you've got a
- 24:30Speaker 11: one in one hundred thousand shot of making it. But
- 24:33Speaker 11: you look at all of those famous players, Messi, Ronaldo,
- 24:37Speaker 11: Rooney and Bathe, they're all playing in the Champions League
- 24:40Speaker 11: when they're younger. Now the problem is in America, very
- 24:45Speaker 11: few American parents, because you've got the NC double A,
- 24:48Speaker 11: they're going to say, you know, you know Paul or
- 24:52Speaker 11: Andy if little if one of their kids gets into
- 24:54Speaker 11: Liverpool Academy, they're not leading Massachusetts up and moving to
- 24:59Speaker 11: that because education with this, there's no safety net. You're
- 25:02Speaker 11: not getting a degree by going to some of these academies.
- 25:06Speaker 11: And unless you insert the twelve year olds, you're not
- 25:09Speaker 11: going to be playing you football in the Champions League
- 25:12Speaker 11: at seventeen or eighteen, because that's what it takes to
- 25:16Speaker 11: have two or three world class players. Because there's thousands
- 25:20Speaker 11: of slightly underworld class players. Right, we didn't take a
- 25:24Speaker 11: guy call Phil Foden with us. He didn't make our
- 25:27Speaker 11: twenty six. He would have been the best person on
- 25:30Speaker 11: the American team. You bring up Hulasitch made his debut
- 25:34Speaker 11: for Borisse a Doorman at seventeen and he was playing
- 25:38Speaker 11: Champions League football with Chelsea a few years later. Admittedly
- 25:41Speaker 11: he wasn't that great, but you need to have that model.
- 25:44Speaker 11: So the next this is when the kids turned twelve,
- 25:47Speaker 11: and especially with NIL, there's no way you're not going
- 25:51Speaker 11: to say I've got a good kid. I'm going to
- 25:53Speaker 11: send them off now for a million to one shot,
- 25:55Speaker 11: no education, and if he leaves, it really is Sunny's
- 25:58Speaker 11: car wash as opposed to well, he might be pretty good.
- 26:01Speaker 11: He can get a scholarship to un age. He's not
- 26:04Speaker 11: going to become a professional, but he gets four years
- 26:06Speaker 11: of education, maybe gets MENIL and then you graduate. Now
- 26:11Speaker 11: there is another chance, right, I've thought of another solution
- 26:15Speaker 11: because of NIL. Maybe the Premier League cuts to deal
- 26:20Speaker 11: with the sec right and then pushes the youth somehow
- 26:24Speaker 11: they can make some more money. So now you've got
- 26:27Speaker 11: NIL money. That's the only way you could maybe bring
- 26:30Speaker 11: more youth or sort of up it that way. But
- 26:33Speaker 11: that's my solution. American parents are not going to send
- 26:36Speaker 11: their kids abroad at twelve years old. From million to
- 26:39Speaker 11: one shot, all.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Right, But I read that Agasy book and at a
- 26:47Speaker 2: young age, I think just as he was going at
- 26:50Speaker 2: the high school, his father was approached by Nick Bolla Terry,
- 26:54Speaker 2: who was starting this academy, who was still young, and said,
- 26:57Speaker 2: send him here. He'll go to school, you know, but
- 27:01Speaker 2: he's gonna play tennis and that's what he's gonna do
- 27:04Speaker 2: all day long. And you know, he describes that whole
- 27:07Speaker 2: journey that and it was miserable for you. He hated it,
- 27:11Speaker 2: hated it, but he did it. And you know, Nick
- 27:15Speaker 2: Bolterry Academy grew after that. I don't know what it's
- 27:18Speaker 2: doing these days. But IMG had but a thing right now.
- 27:23Speaker 2: And but that's an individual sport.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Well they had they have IMG and other sports.
- 27:29Speaker 9: Yeah, I academy, mom, you have all these like sports.
- 27:33Speaker 9: They're really just they do. They do exist, but they're
- 27:36Speaker 9: still schools.
- 27:37Speaker 1: And they go like it's not just the people schools.
- 27:42Speaker 9: Say like okay, but exactly right, it's still a school.
- 27:46Speaker 9: There's still that like structure there. It's not like you
- 27:50Speaker 9: are going off to sport Thing or to Real Madrid
- 27:53Speaker 9: and you're gonna do nothing but play soccer.
- 27:55Speaker 10: And we just hope it was.
- 27:56Speaker 9: And how do you get a kid good enough by
- 27:59Speaker 9: the age of twelve to even get recognized at that level?
- 28:02Speaker 9: You have to be touching the ball every single day
- 28:05Speaker 9: in the dirt with your friends.
- 28:06Speaker 7: In addition, that's why I say it, and I know
- 28:08Speaker 7: I'm simplistic, but they do do that in other sports
- 28:11Speaker 7: Mike's and the USHL.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Yeah, the parents can stay put. They live there. They
- 28:17Speaker 2: literally live there. The parents can stay.
- 28:20Speaker 10: Where they How old are you when you go play
- 28:22Speaker 10: junior hockey?
- 28:23Speaker 5: I mean thirteen fourteen?
- 28:25Speaker 2: Good enough?
- 28:26Speaker 7: You know, if you're good enough you go to the USHL,
- 28:30Speaker 7: you go to some of these leagues now in Canada.
- 28:33Speaker 7: And James brings up a good point about the nil
- 28:36Speaker 7: money too, because now you know you can sort of
- 28:39Speaker 7: like forego some of those things because you can make
- 28:41Speaker 7: some money when you go to college. But I just
- 28:44Speaker 7: I would look at there's some exceptions, but I don't
- 28:48Speaker 7: think the amount of nil money available in the non
- 28:51Speaker 7: traditional sports is anywhere near what worthwhile to bank on
- 28:56Speaker 7: it's not life changing money.
- 28:58Speaker 1: I'm glad that he brought up polistics because I think
- 29:00Speaker 1: that his path is the best path forward for somebody
- 29:05Speaker 1: in American born player to become like a true soccer star.
- 29:09Speaker 1: And he's the best that we've ever produced. So it
- 29:12Speaker 1: kind of goes to show. But he was you know,
- 29:15Speaker 1: he went to Dortmund, like James said, when he was
- 29:17Speaker 1: a teenager, and you know, like that that was he
- 29:21Speaker 1: didn't go to American high school, like he didn't go
- 29:24Speaker 1: to college in the States. He played soccer and even
- 29:29Speaker 1: he's good, but not you know, we're not talking about
- 29:32Speaker 1: Imbape here, like we're talking about a guy that's still
- 29:35Speaker 1: middling in the grand scheme of thing.
- 29:37Speaker 8: Could you ever imagine this kind of development system for
- 29:40Speaker 8: American football, you know, like we're talking all about hockey
- 29:42Speaker 8: and all these different sports where they have you know,
- 29:44Speaker 8: and I am she's probably a little bit of an
- 29:45Speaker 8: example of it. But it's funny that like the biggest
- 29:48Speaker 8: sport in our league or and in the you know,
- 29:50Speaker 8: in our country, and the sport that we're most proud
- 29:52Speaker 8: of and think we dominate, like we don't really do this,
- 29:54Speaker 8: Like a lot of it is just I started playing
- 29:56Speaker 8: second year.
- 29:56Speaker 5: Of high school and he was six with five three thirty.
- 29:58Speaker 1: And the end of you know what I mean, Like
- 30:00Speaker 1: there's a lot more of it than you think, like
- 30:01Speaker 1: it will. I mean, there's a lot of people that
- 30:04Speaker 1: you know.
- 30:04Speaker 5: But organized.
- 30:05Speaker 7: You know Steve Burton, Okay, who's on Patriots All Access
- 30:09Speaker 7: with us. He's a local legend here and you know
- 30:12Speaker 7: CBS for Boston. His son, Austin was a terrific high
- 30:16Speaker 7: school quarterback in Newton. He played in Florida. Yeah, that
- 30:21Speaker 7: happens all the time, all the time. You just don't
- 30:25Speaker 7: know about him all the time because this just happens
- 30:27Speaker 7: to be one with, you know, kind of school. He
- 30:30Speaker 7: went on Factory in Florida.
- 30:32Speaker 2: You have to like have residency, like well, the academies
- 30:35Speaker 2: are different, but like even if you live like in Pennsylvania.
- 30:39Speaker 2: And I know this because my son's cousin was a
- 30:43Speaker 2: really good hockey player and he lived in Harrisburg, but
- 30:47Speaker 2: there was another school in another town that was more.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Of a hockey school that would be Everett High.
- 30:52Speaker 2: So his father rented an apartment there so he could
- 30:55Speaker 2: claim residency so his kid could go to that school.
- 30:58Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, I hear you, guy, they're saying, I
- 31:00Speaker 8: just see like they're talking about like the organization of
- 31:03Speaker 8: it and how regiment it is. Where this is like
- 31:05Speaker 8: a specific school is specific good and they go you
- 31:07Speaker 8: know where it's not one body.
- 31:09Speaker 7: I'll try to remember when you're doing the draft process
- 31:11Speaker 7: next year.
- 31:12Speaker 1: YouTube dorks, Right, yeah.
- 31:15Speaker 7: Think of the same think of the same school in Texas.
- 31:18Speaker 7: Just will just keep coming up.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Its St.
- 31:21Speaker 5: Thomas Aquinas.
- 31:23Speaker 1: They talk about all.
- 31:24Speaker 7: Of them in Florida, right, like the ones that James
- 31:27Speaker 7: how are possible Joe Bernard and James White and all
- 31:29Speaker 7: these guys all went to the same school. I wonder
- 31:32Speaker 7: how there's there's kind of the Ohio where it's Don
- 31:37Speaker 7: Bosco Prepp in New Jersey, there is you know, you
- 31:41Speaker 7: know modern Day in California. It's not a coincidence that
- 31:44Speaker 7: Jesus good every year, right, But you know there's a
- 31:46Speaker 7: football factor.
- 31:47Speaker 8: It's all having not like the National American Football development.
- 31:51Speaker 2: You know, it's not.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Like it's not an international sport.
- 31:56Speaker 7: It's not under that umbrella, but it is the same
- 31:58Speaker 7: basic concept. There's one there was a tremendous documentary I
- 32:02Speaker 7: watched on one in Baltimore, and I forget the I
- 32:05Speaker 7: forget the name of the school, but I think it
- 32:07Speaker 7: was like, uh Pogy, I think was the coach Tom Pogy,
- 32:10Speaker 7: and they had all of these different at like Blake
- 32:13Speaker 7: Korham went there and he ended up going to Michigan.
- 32:15Speaker 7: And obviously I was with the Rams. The school existed
- 32:19Speaker 7: for no other reason than to develop football players. That
- 32:22Speaker 7: was why the school was created. So they do have them,
- 32:26Speaker 7: but it's just not as yeah, and it's and it's
- 32:30Speaker 7: not like I don't think you sign a contract when
- 32:34Speaker 7: you're twelve, you know, in mess easy, because I.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Think it's just like different because our D one college
- 32:39Speaker 1: programs will develop these sports. Like if you go to
- 32:44Speaker 1: Kentucky or Duke or North Carolina to play basketball, you
- 32:48Speaker 1: were going to give yourself every chance to go to
- 32:50Speaker 1: the NBA if you have the talent. But if you
- 32:53Speaker 1: can't do that in soccer, because if you go to
- 32:54Speaker 1: North Carolina for soccer, you're not going to be anywhere
- 32:57Speaker 1: near as good.
- 32:57Speaker 7: But if you want to play basketball at do or Carolina,
- 33:02Speaker 7: you're not doing it from ever high school.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Or not as much anymore.
- 33:06Speaker 7: You need to go to like at the very least
- 33:09Speaker 7: one of the prep schools in New England probably even
- 33:13Speaker 7: more so like one of the AAU programs, you know,
- 33:16Speaker 7: one of the you only.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Really do that for like the enemy, like the end
- 33:19Speaker 1: of high school, like you go there for like a
- 33:22Speaker 1: year or two, like de Bonza went, you do.
- 33:24Speaker 10: Until your sophomore year and like your home.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Run and right, so like you know de Bonza, he
- 33:29Speaker 1: did it. Yeah, he played out in Utah for like
- 33:32Speaker 1: a year though, and then he went to BYU. Like
- 33:35Speaker 1: you know that, it's not like you're going to move
- 33:38Speaker 1: the process. But he wouldn't play at Brockton High. He
- 33:41Speaker 1: didn't play at Brockton High. He played at a prep
- 33:43Speaker 1: school in New England, then went to the place in Utah.
- 33:46Speaker 1: I understand, but he didn't is what I'm talking about.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Not everybody can do that. But then he goes to
- 33:51Speaker 1: you know, like our college basketball is good enough to
- 33:56Speaker 1: develop them on its own, where like our college saw
- 34:00Speaker 1: and our high school soccer isn't good enough. So like that,
- 34:03Speaker 1: you know.
- 34:04Speaker 7: That's you said it yesterday and you were right. It's
- 34:06Speaker 7: a chicken of the egg. Yeah, And I think you
- 34:09Speaker 7: and I probably will always disagree on it, but you
- 34:12Speaker 7: would Neither one of us is right.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Neither one of us is wrong. Well, isn't We can't
- 34:16Speaker 1: prove each other right wrong because I can't go back
- 34:18Speaker 1: in time and put Tyreek kill in a soccer academy.
- 34:21Speaker 7: And you know, my whole point is moved because of that.
- 34:24Speaker 7: I can't prove that Stefan Diggs would be a tremendous
- 34:27Speaker 7: soccer player, but that's my belief.
- 34:29Speaker 1: I just watch his feet, and I just say, like, if.
- 34:32Speaker 7: If he grew up playing, if he grew up playing
- 34:34Speaker 7: soccer his whole life when he was five years old,
- 34:36Speaker 7: doing the stuff that Alex was.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Talking about earlier.
- 34:39Speaker 7: Okay, three two, I mean it is organized daycare as
- 34:42Speaker 7: I like to call it.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Two.
- 34:44Speaker 7: Yeah, Like those feet athletics. I think that would translate
- 34:49Speaker 7: to that sport. Not a big guy.
- 34:50Speaker 1: That's that's why, like I didn't want to Lebron.
- 34:53Speaker 10: Because I would be the perfect person.
- 34:56Speaker 7: There's plenty of five ten guys that are just at
- 34:58Speaker 7: a different level of skill and talent.
- 35:01Speaker 1: I just wonder if they would get the development Muggsy bogues,
- 35:04Speaker 1: you know, like maybe if they got recognized and they
- 35:07Speaker 1: got brought to Europe to play out their teenage drop
- 35:11Speaker 1: rigs in Rio. Yeah, but but he wants to develop
- 35:15Speaker 1: held America. I think no, Yeah, that's why I said.
- 35:18Speaker 1: That's why I said, you're not wrong about the development. Yeah. Yeah,
- 35:22Speaker 1: even though I kind of think you I know you do.
- 35:25Speaker 1: It's so like you're so classic.
- 35:29Speaker 9: It's all we would be water there.
- 35:33Speaker 10: It's a very not an argument.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Because it's a very rareed thing.
- 35:36Speaker 10: It's a different point that you're all making to the
- 35:39Speaker 10: same argument.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Yeah, we do have some Patriots emails and questions coming
- 35:44Speaker 2: in thirty six minutes.
- 35:46Speaker 10: You're probably like, please.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Yeah, Dylan and Alabama wants wants to know. It's it's
- 35:51Speaker 2: a you know, it's a hypothetical, but uh a J.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Brown and Romeo Dobbs. Will that be enough to beat
- 35:58Speaker 2: the Seahawks in Week one? That addition.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Better? I mean they have enough talent to beat him.
- 36:07Speaker 1: I don't know, you know, it's it's one game. I
- 36:09Speaker 1: don't know.
- 36:09Speaker 2: I would say, tell me how the offensive line plays, yeah,
- 36:12Speaker 2: and if it plays really well, I'd say.
- 36:14Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean tell me how Drake plays.
- 36:17Speaker 8: Tell me how you know, what do you learned from
- 36:19Speaker 8: the super Bowl? You know what did the Patriots coaching
- 36:22Speaker 8: staff learned from the Super.
- 36:23Speaker 5: Bowl about how they attack them?
- 36:25Speaker 8: You know what does Mike McDonald do differently and throw
- 36:27Speaker 8: some curve balls.
- 36:28Speaker 5: He's a good Such a.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Different game than the Super Bowl, Like it's an opening
- 36:32Speaker 1: game of the season, and they've had some turnover, like
- 36:36Speaker 1: they're obviously Klint Kubiak is gone and coach of the
- 36:39Speaker 1: Raiders now and Kenneth Walker is no longer there, so
- 36:42Speaker 1: that they've had some some change in Seattle that I
- 36:45Speaker 1: assume is going to maybe take a little while to
- 36:48Speaker 1: take hold. So it's just a completely different animal than
- 36:50Speaker 1: playing a team that's peaking in the Super Bowl versus
- 36:53Speaker 1: playing them right out of the gate and a season opener.
- 36:56Speaker 8: Yeah, I do find a fascinating though to you know,
- 36:58Speaker 8: what else do you have to go off of, Like
- 37:00Speaker 8: what do they say about that game?
- 37:02Speaker 3: Though?
- 37:02Speaker 5: You know, what do they say? Work?
- 37:03Speaker 8: What do we say Josh? I know, Josh McDaniel is
- 37:06Speaker 8: a smart guy. What's he gonna what's how is he
- 37:08Speaker 8: going to try to adjust? And I'm sure Mike McDonald's thinking,
- 37:10Speaker 8: how am I going to adjust to his adjustments? And
- 37:12Speaker 8: you know they're at least at that level with Josh's
- 37:15Speaker 8: offense and Mike McDonald's defense, there's you know, probably some
- 37:18Speaker 8: schematic carryover and like, you know, like, I mean, what else.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Are you going to do? Like you haven't played a
- 37:25Speaker 1: game in between them, so you know, on the.
- 37:27Speaker 5: Other side of the ball. Just let's run at the edges.
- 37:29Speaker 5: Let's see if they can stop the run anymore.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Yeah, let's see. Andrew writes in can you guys please
- 37:35Speaker 2: teach Fred how to pronounce lomu in acus? It drives
- 37:39Speaker 2: me crazy ands uh hearing him mispronounce their names every day. Also,
- 37:45Speaker 2: another issue with soccer in the US is there aren't
- 37:47Speaker 2: enough coaches to go around for all these clubs and
- 37:49Speaker 2: academy teams. Landon Donovan spoke recently about how many times
- 37:53Speaker 2: you have one coach coaching five or six different teams
- 37:56Speaker 2: at once, which just leads to volunteers helping out who
- 37:59Speaker 2: have no idea what the hell they're doing.
- 38:01Speaker 1: At Evans point, they're coaching. Yeah, yeah, I just you know,
- 38:06Speaker 1: I'm always going to be a coach, coaching and developing
- 38:10Speaker 1: talent kind of guy, because I think as a country
- 38:13Speaker 1: we have great athletes, so don't I don't think that
- 38:15Speaker 1: we don't have the athletes to field a great soccer team.
- 38:19Speaker 1: I think we don't have the development to do it.
- 38:22Speaker 1: Maybe we are getting there.
- 38:23Speaker 2: My kids played lacrosse, and if he if he had
- 38:25Speaker 2: just stayed playing his town team and hadn't gone to
- 38:28Speaker 2: a club team, he wouldn't have gone to college to
- 38:31Speaker 2: play lacrosse because he wasn't you need to. I always
- 38:35Speaker 2: call it the three c's, coaching, competition, and cost. As
- 38:39Speaker 2: a parent, you have to be willing to give your
- 38:41Speaker 2: kid all three of them. In today's world to get
- 38:45Speaker 2: to where you want to.
- 38:46Speaker 9: One thing I would say that's different around the time
- 38:48Speaker 9: of like when your son and I were growing up,
- 38:50Speaker 9: is that if you were playing club you were good enough.
- 38:53Speaker 9: Like it's I think now they kind of kids get
- 38:56Speaker 9: preyed on. There's a teams, B teams, C teams, and
- 38:59Speaker 9: they'll take your money and throw your.
- 39:00Speaker 5: Kid on a C team, you know what, the super
- 39:03Speaker 5: elite team.
- 39:04Speaker 7: Yeah, and then you have to pay for the program.
- 39:08Speaker 9: You know, Like when I was growing up, if you
- 39:09Speaker 9: played club soccer, you were really good.
- 39:11Speaker 10: You know, it was just different.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Yeah, but that definitely is true, Like especially with his
- 39:15Speaker 1: sport like lacrosse, where repetition is so important because it's
- 39:18Speaker 1: it's not a trained skill to throw in catch and
- 39:21Speaker 1: be able to do the things with the lacrosse sticks,
- 39:23Speaker 1: so you have to kind of learn how to do it.
- 39:26Speaker 1: And uh, as soon as I started playing club, I
- 39:29Speaker 1: got exponentially better, like because I was just playing so much.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Whereas when I just kind of spring would roll around
- 39:36Speaker 1: and I'd pick up the stick and dust it off
- 39:38Speaker 1: in march and get a run on the field, like
- 39:40Speaker 1: it's not it's not the same as when we started
- 39:42Speaker 1: playing all the time.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Adam and Louisyanna. I went to high school with Justin Reid,
- 39:46Speaker 2: current Saints safety. He played soccer through middle school and
- 39:50Speaker 2: freshman year he was worlds more athletic than everyone else
- 39:55Speaker 2: in our grade. Then sophomore year he chose to focus
- 39:58Speaker 2: on football and never look back. Eric Reid, his eldest brother,
- 40:01Speaker 2: also focused on football. They both made it to the
- 40:04Speaker 2: NFL and were great players. They have a third brother
- 40:07Speaker 2: between them, in ages, Ryan Reid. He was just as athletic,
- 40:10Speaker 2: but shows soccer. He never got anywhere near the same
- 40:13Speaker 2: level of notoriety as them. That's why our athletes don't
- 40:16Speaker 2: choose soccer now. There is also a mindset aspect as well.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Ryan was never as physical on the soccer field as Justin.
- 40:23Speaker 2: He preferred to run around you rather than through you,
- 40:26Speaker 2: which doesn't always translate to football.
- 40:31Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure justin Reid, God, it is like an
- 40:34Speaker 1: emergency kicker for the team, playing kickoffs and stuff like that.
- 40:40Speaker 1: There you go.
- 40:41Speaker 5: I love super athletes.
- 40:44Speaker 2: Let's see Chad is in Dallas. What's up, Chad?
- 40:49Speaker 1: Hey?
- 40:49Speaker 3: How's it going y'all?
- 40:51Speaker 1: Kay?
- 40:53Speaker 3: I was wondering, is there if I changed topic on
- 40:55Speaker 3: how to fix the NFL instead of talking about soccer?
- 40:58Speaker 7: Absolutely not can how to fix the NFL's broken, Yes.
- 41:04Speaker 3: And what I mean about that is like the development
- 41:07Speaker 3: players and stuff. So me, me and my neighbor always
- 41:11Speaker 3: talk about this on our back porches for hoops and giggles,
- 41:14Speaker 3: and we always said, why can't the teams hire want
- 41:18Speaker 3: to be coaches and stuff like that, hire eighteen year old,
- 41:22Speaker 3: ninete year old twenty year olds to come just say
- 41:25Speaker 3: they work for Robert Kraft. They can develop techniques and stuff.
- 41:31Speaker 3: They can get the NFL neck with the skinless chicken
- 41:34Speaker 3: and all that, and get rid of the college prospect
- 41:38Speaker 3: and all that. The peak people that didn't have a
- 41:40Speaker 3: choice to go to college or something. You can pay
- 41:43Speaker 3: them whatever a salary for a year or so, have
- 41:46Speaker 3: them on. Some want to be football team that Barbara
- 41:49Speaker 3: Kraft has, and then he can do that with across
- 41:52Speaker 3: the whole NFL and maybe do scrimmishes and say you can't,
- 41:56Speaker 3: you can't. You can't hire nobody from that whatever team
- 42:01Speaker 3: you want to call it, whatever you want to call it.
- 42:02Speaker 3: They have to be in a contract for two years first,
- 42:05Speaker 3: and then maybe have some some special draft for those
- 42:08Speaker 3: kind of players or something.
- 42:11Speaker 12: No.
- 42:11Speaker 2: I I I've thought of things like that before. Chad too.
- 42:14Speaker 2: It's like it's that alternate path to go into college.
- 42:17Speaker 2: Like I want to play football. I'm making no bones
- 42:20Speaker 2: about it. That's what i want to do. It's like
- 42:23Speaker 2: almost going into a trade school after high school rather
- 42:26Speaker 2: than going to college. I'm going to go to a
- 42:27Speaker 2: football school. I'm going to get a job playing football.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Why would you do that when you could go to
- 42:33Speaker 1: go to D one college?
- 42:35Speaker 3: They can't.
- 42:35Speaker 7: But this is your because you're not smart enough, because
- 42:39Speaker 7: this is perfect time for you because you don't have
- 42:41Speaker 7: to be You think that do you think that.
- 42:43Speaker 1: You think that they're worried about how smart the kids?
- 42:46Speaker 2: Well? I don't know.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Nevertheless, so than right now.
- 42:49Speaker 2: So what you're saying then, is that our n C
- 42:52Speaker 2: double a D one is what Chad is, but now
- 42:55Speaker 2: it is now it.
- 42:56Speaker 1: Is Yeah, it's basically pro football. Yeah, it's it's it
- 42:59Speaker 1: is pro football. I mean what's happened is like crazy,
- 43:04Speaker 1: like it is profole.
- 43:05Speaker 2: That's the NFL's developmental League.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Yes, the SEC is basically like a yeah, you know,
- 43:13Speaker 1: like you know how the NBA has league or you
- 43:16Speaker 1: know the MLB has the minor league system and when
- 43:19Speaker 1: baseball that that's the SEC. You know, like that that
- 43:23Speaker 1: that's what that is for football. I mean, you're not
- 43:25Speaker 1: going to get better competition and better resources than going
- 43:28Speaker 1: to one of those schools like Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State.
- 43:32Speaker 1: Like I mean the facilities.
- 43:34Speaker 2: AFL be subsidizing these schools.
- 43:36Speaker 1: They probably are, you think, so, I mean maybe I
- 43:38Speaker 1: shouldn't have said. I mean it's the same thing as
- 43:42Speaker 1: like you know, look at like Indiana. Indiana all of
- 43:46Speaker 1: a sudden just becomes this football powerhouse because Mark Cuban
- 43:49Speaker 1: got really into his alma mater and now he just
- 43:52Speaker 1: bankrolls Indiana football. You know, like that that's just that's
- 43:56Speaker 1: just the way it is, and that's the way it's
- 43:58Speaker 1: set up with NFL. I don't think that they need
- 44:01Speaker 1: that for like high school and college. I think we
- 44:04Speaker 1: have a high school and college breeding ground.
- 44:07Speaker 2: This is a big shift, a big idea, and maybe
- 44:09Speaker 2: a dumb one. But what if down the road, sometime
- 44:13Speaker 2: in the future, pie in the sky, the NFL and
- 44:18Speaker 2: college and c DOAA get together and say we're going
- 44:20Speaker 2: to move the college football season to the spring. So
- 44:25Speaker 2: now college football is now a spring sport for what?
- 44:29Speaker 1: For what end?
- 44:30Speaker 2: So that the NFL could get more involved with, like
- 44:33Speaker 2: maybe having coaches on campus and being more involved with
- 44:36Speaker 2: the programs.
- 44:41Speaker 1: I don't know if that is that solving a problem
- 44:42Speaker 1: that I don't know you solved.
- 44:43Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 44:44Speaker 7: I'm just like, I don't know, get out of that.
- 44:49Speaker 2: They would have and they would have all the TV
- 44:53Speaker 2: to themselves, so maybe it would be more money. I
- 44:56Speaker 2: don't know.
- 44:57Speaker 8: Sounds like the NFL is like, you know, go to
- 44:59Speaker 8: the spring, you're on TV, you know, try to get
- 45:01Speaker 8: them off.
- 45:02Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I don't THEE would yeah.
- 45:05Speaker 9: I guess, yeah, I don't know what, but it seems
- 45:08Speaker 9: I don't know, like I don't think we would be
- 45:11Speaker 9: impacted by it.
- 45:12Speaker 10: But imagine like a die hard SEC fanly a diehard.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Operation some adjustment.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Could you see any benefits from having two football seasons,
- 45:22Speaker 2: one for n c Double A and one for the NFL.
- 45:25Speaker 7: I wouldn't like it personally, but it's not about me personally.
- 45:28Speaker 7: I'm trying to figure out what the pros are for that,
- 45:31Speaker 7: Like what what what?
- 45:32Speaker 2: Like?
- 45:32Speaker 1: What do you? What is the What does the NFL
- 45:34Speaker 1: get out of that?
- 45:35Speaker 2: So all the focus, all the focus and scouting can
- 45:39Speaker 2: be focused on college.
- 45:41Speaker 1: But that's what it is. That's what scouts do.
- 45:44Speaker 2: But I don't know, So I don't know.
- 45:47Speaker 7: Basically, you're saying, so the scouts can watch the Patriots
- 45:50Speaker 7: play on Sunday instead of doing their job.
- 45:52Speaker 5: For the scouts.
- 45:53Speaker 9: But which colleges get reps from the NFL teams? There's
- 45:58Speaker 9: only thirty two teams, which funds? Well?
- 46:02Speaker 1: Do they? I think college has football has a lot
- 46:05Speaker 1: bigger issues, don't worry about before we start moving. I mean,
- 46:09Speaker 1: the college football set up right now is kind of
- 46:12Speaker 1: a not just kind of it is a mess.
- 46:14Speaker 7: Yeah, you'll get your SEC Big ten, you know, split
- 46:18Speaker 7: away from the NCAA.
- 46:19Speaker 1: That's coming sooner.
- 46:20Speaker 2: Well, I think they're going to come up with that
- 46:22Speaker 2: power league at some point.
- 46:23Speaker 1: I think that that's the best thing to do.
- 46:25Speaker 3: Now.
- 46:25Speaker 1: I know that the die hard like Sicico college football fans,
- 46:29Speaker 1: you know, are would like rather see anything than to
- 46:32Speaker 1: lose the conference rivalries and stuff like that. That's gone.
- 46:35Speaker 1: But I think the thing that makes the most sense
- 46:37Speaker 1: is to take like basically create actually not to like
- 46:41Speaker 1: make it about soccer, but create like a system that's
- 46:44Speaker 1: similar to England and you know soccer in England where
- 46:48Speaker 1: there's like a pyramid of relegation and so you have
- 46:52Speaker 1: like a top tier that's like the top thirty two
- 46:54Speaker 1: teams in the country and then like the bottom three
- 46:57Speaker 1: get relegated in the top three and you kind of
- 47:00Speaker 1: have it go up and down like that. Other rather
- 47:03Speaker 1: than having like, you know, these these conferences that have
- 47:07Speaker 1: just become a mess, where like there's teams that are
- 47:09Speaker 1: West Coast conferences that are in like the ACC. It's
- 47:13Speaker 1: like it's called the Atlantic Coast Conference, and we have
- 47:16Speaker 1: you know, a team in Collen Stanford cow. It's perfect sense,
- 47:19Speaker 1: you know.
- 47:19Speaker 2: So why do in baseball, why do some people play
- 47:23Speaker 2: minor league baseball and some people go to college.
- 47:29Speaker 7: It's a good question, and I would say probably money
- 47:33Speaker 7: is a factor, and we'll see if some of that
- 47:35Speaker 7: changes now, yeah, because the same thing is starting to
- 47:38Speaker 7: happen in baseball, especially in the SEC.
- 47:41Speaker 1: Again, you can make some money playing baseball now.
- 47:45Speaker 7: The transport portal is huge in all sports, not just
- 47:48Speaker 7: football and basketball. It runs rampant in all of the
- 47:52Speaker 7: sports now, So there's money to be had. So it'd
- 47:54Speaker 7: be interesting to see if more players start to go
- 47:56Speaker 7: to college. I would say most young kids out of
- 47:59Speaker 7: high school that go right to the minors probably just
- 48:03Speaker 7: want to paycheck that they're good enough to sign and
- 48:05Speaker 7: get you know, a couple of million in signing bonus,
- 48:09Speaker 7: and they go.
- 48:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that. Uh you know, I had some
- 48:11Speaker 1: friends that that were good enough to play baseball and
- 48:14Speaker 1: at least at the minor league level, and a lot
- 48:17Speaker 1: of it is what James is kind of talking about,
- 48:18Speaker 1: like their parents force them to go to college, because
- 48:22Speaker 1: even if you go into minor league baseball, you're still
- 48:24Speaker 1: one in a million that you're going to be a
- 48:25Speaker 1: big league player, right, So, like what happens if in
- 48:28Speaker 1: three years of minor league baseball just you know, you
- 48:32Speaker 1: flunk out and then now you don't have a college degree.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Now you're not playing baseball anymore. Like what's the path
- 48:37Speaker 1: for you in life. So Sony's yeah, so a lot
- 48:40Speaker 1: of ill just go back to college. But that's good,
- 48:42Speaker 1: but that's why you might have.
- 48:44Speaker 10: To pay for it. But like you just made millions, Well.
- 48:48Speaker 1: Yeah, but you know it's easier said than done to
- 48:51Speaker 1: just go back to college.
- 48:52Speaker 7: So if you're projected to be, say like a top
- 48:54Speaker 7: five round pick in baseball, and I agree with with Evan,
- 48:59Speaker 7: like it's or crapsh you whether or not you're going
- 49:01Speaker 7: to make it. So I can take the guaranteed money.
- 49:03Speaker 7: I'm going to get money to sign and I can go.
- 49:06Speaker 7: And if I play two or three years and I don't,
- 49:09Speaker 7: you know, and I crap out and it doesn't work.
- 49:11Speaker 1: At least I got some money. I made a couple
- 49:13Speaker 1: of million.
- 49:14Speaker 7: If I go to college and I'm not that good
- 49:18Speaker 7: and I crap out, now I'm no longer a top
- 49:20Speaker 7: five pick, top five round. I'm saying, not top five
- 49:23Speaker 7: in the first Like, you know, I'm not as valuable
- 49:27Speaker 7: because I just went to college and I kind of
- 49:29Speaker 7: proved maybe I was a big fish in a little
- 49:31Speaker 7: pond in high school, but I'm not that good and
- 49:34Speaker 7: now I have no money to fall back on.
- 49:36Speaker 9: There's just too many ways to make money without a
- 49:38Speaker 9: college degree, now, right, it's not right? Yeah, what if
- 49:42Speaker 9: you play minor league baseball, there's a very easy path
- 49:45Speaker 9: to being an influencer or a hitting coach on YouTube.
- 49:50Speaker 1: But I don't know if like our parents, No, our
- 49:52Speaker 1: parents are different.
- 49:53Speaker 10: This is how the mindset I would have.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Yeah, but when we were growing away from our parents
- 49:59Speaker 1: were still like, to college and you get a degree,
- 50:01Speaker 1: and you know, that's that's the path. And I think
- 50:04Speaker 1: you know a lot of my friends ended up playing
- 50:06Speaker 1: uh D one college baseball instead of going to the
- 50:09Speaker 1: minor leagues because of that, because their parents were like, no,
- 50:11Speaker 1: you're gonna go get a degree and if baseball works out, great,
- 50:14Speaker 1: but we're not you know, counting on that.
- 50:16Speaker 5: What was a Schlitler's development, Like, how was.
- 50:19Speaker 1: He a trader?
- 50:21Speaker 5: I knew that was coming. Yeah, but how long was
- 50:22Speaker 5: he in Northeastern?
- 50:23Speaker 2: Just two years? I think?
- 50:25Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 50:26Speaker 7: And now obviously he he hit. He panned out when
- 50:29Speaker 7: he went to college. But to Fred's point, now, I
- 50:32Speaker 7: think you might see more kids go to college because they.
- 50:36Speaker 1: Can get both.
- 50:36Speaker 2: Yep.
- 50:37Speaker 7: They can start a college education for free and make money.
- 50:42Speaker 7: In a lot of cases, that's going to be at
- 50:43Speaker 7: least commensurate to what you would have made if you signed,
- 50:46Speaker 7: because not everybody gets millions to sign, only the very
- 50:49Speaker 7: select few, right.
- 50:50Speaker 2: You know, I've had this rant before on this show.
- 50:54Speaker 2: I believe, but you know, you're talking about the development
- 50:56Speaker 2: and in particular football in this country, and we know
- 51:00Speaker 2: it's hurting. Participation in tackle football has gone down. I
- 51:04Speaker 2: think the whole concussion thing really hurt tackle football and
- 51:07Speaker 2: all that, and it's a shame and the league, the
- 51:11Speaker 2: NFL should spend as much time promoting tackle football as
- 51:15Speaker 2: it does flag football these days. In my opinion, flag
- 51:19Speaker 2: football is not a pathway to tackle football. It's not
- 51:22Speaker 2: a way to grow the game tackle football. And the
- 51:26Speaker 2: league has a serious problem on its hand when it
- 51:29Speaker 2: comes to the talent pool. It could be one of
- 51:32Speaker 2: the reasons why they want to go overseas, but even then,
- 51:35Speaker 2: you know, there's not gonna be a lot of tackle
- 51:38Speaker 2: NFL expansion if you can't also expand the talent pool. Uh,
- 51:43Speaker 2: And that's becoming a problem. So I think the league
- 51:45Speaker 2: has to put on as big boy pants and not
- 51:48Speaker 2: worry about the whole concussion I'm not saying that safety
- 51:52Speaker 2: shouldn't be still emphasized in football. It should be. And
- 51:56Speaker 2: concussions are real. I'm not not saying they're not, but
- 51:58Speaker 2: concussions are real. And every physical sport, including soccer, by
- 52:03Speaker 2: the way, which I think has as high a concussion
- 52:06Speaker 2: rate as tackle football, you know when you know, with
- 52:10Speaker 2: the heading and all that stuff. So yeah, so so
- 52:13Speaker 2: football needs to embrace NFL needs to embrace tackle football
- 52:18Speaker 2: at the youth level and start promoting its participation and
- 52:23Speaker 2: getting as much back involved in tackle football as it
- 52:26Speaker 2: is currently with flag football. End of rant.
- 52:29Speaker 1: I think that there's some advantages to playing flag though,
- 52:32Speaker 1: like it's not like for for some people. Yeah, for
- 52:35Speaker 1: the skill positions especially, you know, I mean definitely teaches
- 52:38Speaker 1: you how you know to like if you want to
- 52:41Speaker 1: be a receiver, like you're catching the ball still and
- 52:43Speaker 1: you're still getting open, and you're still running routes, and
- 52:46Speaker 1: people's got to cover the people that are running the routes.
- 52:48Speaker 1: So like I think the passing game as a whole,
- 52:50Speaker 1: it definitely teaches it. The physicality part absolutely not you
- 52:54Speaker 1: know what kills me.
- 52:55Speaker 8: I mean, I've watched en a flag football with my son,
- 52:56Speaker 8: who loves it, but it's just the stupid grabbing the flag.
- 53:00Speaker 8: It's I mean, you know, a kid's running full speed,
- 53:02Speaker 8: he jumps up, does a helicopter. You know, all these
- 53:04Speaker 8: kids are like trying to get it, and then he
- 53:07Speaker 8: just keeps running right through everybody. And it's like, I
- 53:09Speaker 8: get so frustrated watching when I'm just like I just
- 53:11Speaker 8: want to wrap somebody.
- 53:12Speaker 5: Oh I can tackle him.
- 53:13Speaker 2: Yeah, trying to grab a flag. There's no way to
- 53:16Speaker 2: prove this.
- 53:17Speaker 1: I hate it.
- 53:18Speaker 2: There's no way to prove this. But in an alternate universe,
- 53:21Speaker 2: if the development of football in our country was flag
- 53:24Speaker 2: or touch or not physical, it would not be as
- 53:27Speaker 2: popular as the NFL would not have become the powerhouse
- 53:31Speaker 2: it is if it wasn't a physical game like it is.
- 53:34Speaker 2: That's what makes football unique. American football. Flag football, if
- 53:40Speaker 2: it started one hundred years ago, would not have the
- 53:42Speaker 2: popularity that the NFL has said.
- 53:44Speaker 8: It's so funny hearing you say this spread too, because
- 53:46Speaker 8: now I'm realizing, like you don't hear the NFL promoting
- 53:49Speaker 8: youth football.
- 53:52Speaker 2: It's all flags. They're afraid. Oh you know parents are
- 53:55Speaker 2: going you're promoting this dangerous sport. Okay, well they need
- 53:59Speaker 2: to stop.
- 53:59Speaker 1: I mean at some point you need to play tackle.
- 54:02Speaker 1: I think when you're like in the third grade. Like
- 54:04Speaker 1: I played tackle football in elementary school and got my
- 54:07Speaker 1: bell rung a bunch of times because I was small
- 54:09Speaker 1: and the concussion. Yeah, and like, you know, I don't
- 54:12Speaker 1: know if that was what's best thirty three I don't
- 54:15Speaker 1: remember so well.
- 54:16Speaker 2: So exhibit A.
- 54:19Speaker 1: I played all the sports except soccer because I was terrible.
- 54:22Speaker 2: But did you not get your belt wrung or injuries
- 54:25Speaker 2: in those The only.
- 54:26Speaker 1: Other sport I got my bell rung in was lacrosse.
- 54:28Speaker 2: Okay, but maybe we shouldn't have to playing lacrosse used not.
- 54:32Speaker 10: As much as failed the concussion test.
- 54:35Speaker 1: At the beginning of the year. Across definitely, he definitely,
- 54:40Speaker 1: oh I know you did that.
- 54:42Speaker 2: They lowered their baseline.
- 54:43Speaker 10: Who didn't It was like not encouraged by any insult favorite,
- 54:48Speaker 10: but like, I'm not going to call it.
- 54:52Speaker 1: I would actually I would actually get in.
- 54:54Speaker 10: An upperclassman was like, hey, if you bomb in.
- 54:57Speaker 1: That, I'll never know. I gifted a couple of times.
- 55:01Speaker 2: I still have a bump on the back of my
- 55:03Speaker 2: head from when Michael Mesdi I was up in the
- 55:06Speaker 2: air catching the ball in the playground I'm playing on
- 55:08Speaker 2: tar and he hit me and I landed on my head,
- 55:11Speaker 2: blood everywhere. That's not playing football. I mean, so what
- 55:14Speaker 2: are we gonna you know, like we got to get
- 55:18Speaker 2: over this safety. Yes, they you know, improvement in helmets,
- 55:22Speaker 2: improvement in rules.
- 55:24Speaker 10: Absolutely, car accident and.
- 55:26Speaker 2: Absolutely we should encourage all of that. But NFL, you
- 55:31Speaker 2: got to get back to promoting tackle football at the
- 55:33Speaker 2: youth level.
- 55:34Speaker 5: I just wander the right way to right.
- 55:37Speaker 1: They middle school and they're already playing tackle football at
- 55:40Speaker 1: that point, because like I think you can start usually
- 55:42Speaker 1: in most places at least by like the seventh or
- 55:44Speaker 1: eighth grade. Ye, Like you don't think that's enough time
- 55:46Speaker 1: from the seventh grade to all the way through college.
- 55:49Speaker 7: But player participation, that friend's right, it's way way like
- 55:54Speaker 7: so many teams that.
- 55:59Speaker 2: Used to have varsity, JV and freshman.
- 56:04Speaker 1: Here or like in like Texas, No, if you want
- 56:07Speaker 1: to go, but we need more than just Texas.
- 56:10Speaker 7: Teas, Texas, Texas border in California can't do it all
- 56:13Speaker 7: all the time.
- 56:14Speaker 1: I mean, or like even like like you know, like
- 56:17Speaker 1: the Ohio area is a very popular.
- 56:19Speaker 2: Football western Yeah, yeah, there's like you know, still a
- 56:23Speaker 2: half a dozen to ten hot beds of football. But
- 56:27Speaker 2: that's not enough. It's not enough.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Maybe not. I I just I look at the skill
- 56:34Speaker 1: of the game today, even compared to what it was
- 56:37Speaker 1: when I was a kid. I think that they're you know,
- 56:40Speaker 1: I think that you could make the argument that a
- 56:42Speaker 1: lot of those skill positions are never never been deeper.
- 56:44Speaker 2: That's the same with every sport.
- 56:46Speaker 1: But that's because, like you know, these kids, they they're playing,
- 56:50Speaker 1: even flag football is still teaching the skills of like
- 56:54Speaker 1: catching a ball and throwing a ball and defending a pass.
- 56:57Speaker 2: Every sport you can say the same thing is training
- 57:00Speaker 2: is better.
- 57:01Speaker 1: I think it's because the training and nutrition is better.
- 57:04Speaker 2: Could be, you know, So that's the same with every sport.
- 57:08Speaker 1: It could be. I just think that people are bigger.
- 57:11Speaker 1: I just don't think that there's I guess with flag
- 57:13Speaker 1: football in particular, I just don't think that it's like
- 57:16Speaker 1: worthless to have kids playing.
- 57:19Speaker 2: I didn't say it's worthless. And I'm not saying that
- 57:21Speaker 2: the NFL should stop getting involved in flat football. I'm
- 57:25Speaker 2: saying they should be as involved in tackle football as
- 57:28Speaker 2: they currently are in flag football. That's all at the
- 57:31Speaker 2: youth level, that's all I'm saying.
- 57:32Speaker 7: I think it's it's getting to a critical point. I
- 57:36Speaker 7: think football is dying, like in the youth levels. This
- 57:42Speaker 7: just my little high school with my kids went to,
- 57:44Speaker 7: Like there was like sixty five kids when Will was
- 57:47Speaker 7: a freshman. I went to the Thanksgiving game last year.
- 57:51Speaker 7: They barely had thirty four. Thirty four to thirty five
- 57:53Speaker 7: kids in uniform. That's the whole program. To Fred's point,
- 57:57Speaker 7: this is a program that used to have varsity JV
- 58:00Speaker 7: in freshman games. Now they have thirty four kids total dressed.
- 58:04Speaker 10: But are they playing? That was my question.
- 58:08Speaker 9: Are these kids even playing sports in the numbers you
- 58:11Speaker 9: have to, I.
- 58:12Speaker 1: Don't know, but they're not playing football anymore.
- 58:14Speaker 7: They are, and the organizations all over Eastern Masts are
- 58:18Speaker 7: just shuddered.
- 58:19Speaker 2: And and I'll say another thing about tackle football and
- 58:22Speaker 2: why the NFL should be helping to promote it. The
- 58:25Speaker 2: benefits that your kid gets from being on a football team,
- 58:30Speaker 2: I think outweigh any dangers that there are. I'm serious, like,
- 58:34Speaker 2: there is a lot of benefit to being on It's
- 58:36Speaker 2: the greatest team sport ever invented. And I know the
- 58:40Speaker 2: soccer people will hurt kill me for that, but it's true.
- 58:44Speaker 2: There's people of all sizes. There's different positions. Every position
- 58:47Speaker 2: has a role, and you look on the field and
- 58:50Speaker 2: they're all different sizes.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Spy and no.
- 58:54Speaker 2: Football is the greatest team sport ever invented, and the
- 58:56Speaker 2: benefits of and the you know, what's required to be
- 59:00Speaker 2: on a football team helps your kid immensely, immensely. Some
- 59:06Speaker 2: of the most successful people in our country played football.
- 59:09Speaker 1: I mean, there's no doubt that that in sports in
- 59:11Speaker 1: general that yeah, I you know, but they have to
- 59:14Speaker 1: be playing something. If they're not playing football in the fall,
- 59:17Speaker 1: then they're But it might not be that they're playing
- 59:20Speaker 1: another fall sport. It might be that they're they're playing
- 59:23Speaker 1: au basketball, or they're playing you know, club lacrosse or
- 59:26Speaker 1: like whatever, you know, whatever it is. I hope it's
- 59:29Speaker 1: not that they got like these kids are. We're not
- 59:32Speaker 1: like I mean, is it really that like dark like
- 59:35Speaker 1: they have to be.
- 59:36Speaker 10: Playing I mean a similar thing with fielding, high school teams.
- 59:41Speaker 7: Hockey programs that die in every way too. Now, that
- 59:44Speaker 7: to me is more about it's more about academies.
- 59:47Speaker 1: If you're any good, you're.
- 59:48Speaker 5: Going somewhere prep schools.
- 59:50Speaker 8: Yeah it is, But I mean my school and Sharon
- 59:53Speaker 8: just combined with Detam, so the same thing, Paul, And
- 59:55Speaker 8: I remember when I went out for freshman.
- 59:57Speaker 5: Football and we had.
- 1:00:00Speaker 8: Varsity JV and a freshman team, and you had the
- 1:00:04Speaker 8: numbers to support that, and now it's it's sad. And
- 1:00:07Speaker 8: I mean, you know, I remember when Sharon play King
- 1:00:08Speaker 8: Phillip a couple of years ago, which King Philip, you know,
- 1:00:10Speaker 8: one of the best schools in the state.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: They like this and you just look.
- 1:00:13Speaker 8: At the sidelines and you're like, there's like twenty five
- 1:00:17Speaker 8: undersized kids who the uniforms barely fit them.
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: And then it looks like there's an NFL.
- 1:00:21Speaker 8: Team on the other side with like zolac Son is
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: the backup quarterback and he's like sixt five to twenty.
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: You know, it's it's striking.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: All right. We'll take a break, time to digest everything

- 1:02:50Speaker 15: I think any I mean the receivers want to get
- 1:02:54Speaker 15: open and catch the ball, and the quarterback wants to
- 1:02:56Speaker 15: get it to them. I think that's the simple part.
- 1:02:59Speaker 15: I think the working together and the understanding one another
- 1:03:04Speaker 15: and what one's capable of and what the other one wants.
- 1:03:09Speaker 15: You know, when the quarterback is looking for something to
- 1:03:11Speaker 15: make him comfortable and the receiver thinks he can do this,
- 1:03:15Speaker 15: I think it just there's a dynamic there. It's fun
- 1:03:18Speaker 15: to go through the process of building that, especially with
- 1:03:21Speaker 15: two very talented players. I would say that that's probably
- 1:03:24Speaker 15: the case for our entire skill group, though they're all
- 1:03:27Speaker 15: doing that right now. They take reps with each other.
- 1:03:29Speaker 15: Sometimes it's the first rep they've had at something, sometimes
- 1:03:32Speaker 15: it's the seventh or tenth or whatever, and you can
- 1:03:34Speaker 15: just see the growth as they do it. So more
- 1:03:37Speaker 15: repetitions build great habits. That's what we're out here trying
- 1:03:40Speaker 15: to do. And I think those two are are hard
- 1:03:42Speaker 15: at work at trying to do the same thing.
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: But just the game you have this year wide receiver
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: reminds me of all of that twenty nineteen group with
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: Julian m Josh Gordon.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: And Tonio Brown.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: And how do you go about managing so.
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: Many talented blathers.
- 1:03:56Speaker 15: I don't know if it reminds me of any group,
- 1:03:59Speaker 15: but you know, I mean, there's a lot of guys
- 1:04:02Speaker 15: that can do a lot of interesting things. You know.
- 1:04:07Speaker 15: The good thing is is really there's not I don't
- 1:04:10Speaker 15: know that there's two guys that are really you know,
- 1:04:14Speaker 15: close to being the same. They all offer different things,
- 1:04:17Speaker 15: different abilities, different skill sets. Our job is just to
- 1:04:22Speaker 15: try to figure out how to put them out there
- 1:04:24Speaker 15: and let them have an opportunity to do those things
- 1:04:26Speaker 15: as much as we can. There's other two there's two
- 1:04:29Speaker 15: other skill groups that are involved in that conversation too,
- 1:04:31Speaker 15: with the tight ends and in the backs, and you
- 1:04:34Speaker 15: guys have seen those guys too, so you know, it's Look,
- 1:04:37Speaker 15: it's fun. This time of the year is really good
- 1:04:39Speaker 15: because everybody gets an opportunity to rep and learn and
- 1:04:42Speaker 15: make mistakes and then correct it and then learn from
- 1:04:45Speaker 15: it and get better. So that's what we're trying to do.
- 1:04:47Speaker 15: And you know, at the end of August as we
- 1:04:50Speaker 15: head into the regular season, hopefully we figured out the
- 1:04:52Speaker 15: best way to do it with the group. Very smart,
- 1:04:59Speaker 15: really he enjoys the game of football and you could
- 1:05:04Speaker 15: just tell that he's had a great deal of experience
- 1:05:08Speaker 15: at a high level, you know, whether that's route technique,
- 1:05:12Speaker 15: understanding coverage, releases, top of the routes, how to do
- 1:05:17Speaker 15: certain things you know on in situational football, whatever it
- 1:05:21Speaker 15: might be. Uh, He's certainly had a great deal of
- 1:05:24Speaker 15: high level experience. You can feel that when you talk
- 1:05:27Speaker 15: to him. But he's also really intelligent, understands the game,
- 1:05:32Speaker 15: his position, what it takes to be successful. So it's
- 1:05:36Speaker 15: been it's been awesome. I'm I'm excited we have him.
- 1:05:39Speaker 15: Look forward to continuing to build our relationship, uh and
- 1:05:42Speaker 15: continuing to get him, you know, acclimated to our to
- 1:05:45Speaker 15: our offense.
- 1:05:46Speaker 16: Mike I said yesterday that you and Ashton we're working
- 1:05:48Speaker 16: with dread Dahn with an interstates of the line of scrimmage.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: How do you see him progress that?
- 1:05:53Speaker 15: Yeah, I think I think that's much the same as
- 1:05:55Speaker 15: what we talked about. With everything else that he's doing,
- 1:05:58Speaker 15: you know, he's further ahead and regard. You know, there's
- 1:06:02Speaker 15: nothing worse for an offense than negative plays. They kind
- 1:06:06Speaker 15: of they put you in bad situations. And we saw
- 1:06:09Speaker 15: that last year. You know, when when that happened to us,
- 1:06:12Speaker 15: you know, it's it's hard to overcome those things. I
- 1:06:14Speaker 15: don't care who you are, so uh, you know, we're
- 1:06:19Speaker 15: just we're trying to do what we can at each position,
- 1:06:23Speaker 15: not just a quarterback, but certainly he has to say
- 1:06:25Speaker 15: in all of those and so I think his comfort level,
- 1:06:29Speaker 15: I think his maturity and understanding of how bad those
- 1:06:33Speaker 15: things are for the offense. I think that's that's taking
- 1:06:37Speaker 15: a huge step forward. He understands it, he gets it,
- 1:06:39Speaker 15: and so through that, hopefully we'll be much improved in
- 1:06:44Speaker 15: that area when we get to the regular season.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: When we were talking last week.
- 1:06:50Speaker 16: You made there's not a one for one comparison, but
- 1:06:52Speaker 16: the physical subsproncas like the close thing.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: When you look at that, do you.
- 1:06:57Speaker 16: Put it on yourself like I gotta hunt this matches
- 1:06:59Speaker 16: for this guy because of decide you's trying to know
- 1:07:01Speaker 16: you're early in the process. But is that something that
- 1:07:03Speaker 16: goes through your brain when it comes to aga?
- 1:07:07Speaker 15: It depends, you know, it depends on what kind of
- 1:07:10Speaker 15: defense you're talking about. Is it a team that plays
- 1:07:12Speaker 15: a lot of man and man's own? You know, who
- 1:07:16Speaker 15: are the corners?
- 1:07:17Speaker 11: You know?
- 1:07:17Speaker 15: How do they play?
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: You know, I'm sure.
- 1:07:21Speaker 15: He'd probably be the first one to tell you that
- 1:07:23Speaker 15: he's he is a mismatch. So I'm not sure how
- 1:07:27Speaker 15: how long I have to hunt for him. But but
- 1:07:30Speaker 15: but I understand the level of player, the scheme, how
- 1:07:34Speaker 15: they try to take you know, players away or or
- 1:07:37Speaker 15: at least limit them. That impacts all of our decisions
- 1:07:40Speaker 15: every week and how we go about trying to create
- 1:07:43Speaker 15: the best offensive performance for our team. So I think
- 1:07:47Speaker 15: all of that stuff, honestly will kind of play out
- 1:07:49Speaker 15: and as we go. I think right now, the biggest
- 1:07:52Speaker 15: thing for us is, you know, learning multiple positions, being
- 1:07:55Speaker 15: able to handle moving around, understanding what we're doing, how
- 1:07:59Speaker 15: does it work at the quarterback, getting acclimated in that
- 1:08:02Speaker 15: regard so that we're able to do those things if
- 1:08:04Speaker 15: and when we need to, you know. So, But I
- 1:08:07Speaker 15: don't think that process is going to take long. It's
- 1:08:10Speaker 15: very quick learner. And like I said, it's that he's a.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: And now great moments in.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: History.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: She's my lines are way off this week. Yeah, I
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: just I don't. I don't believe in.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: Do you get your lines from Jimmy the Barbers?
- 1:08:28Speaker 7: It's week too to spread and I just I just
- 1:08:30Speaker 7: go to draft cans very nice.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: Had the same lines as Paul.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: So we go to draft, no draft.
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: Listening draft.
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: They are presenting sponsor for the post game show. So
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: I think that we should draft. Yeah, I mean show
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: a little of every week you mocking. Can I can't
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: go to you go to draft?
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: Why don't you go to draft?
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: I can't.
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: I'm not allowed to. Fred I signed a contract.
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: All that you're not allowed probably it's not allowed to
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: use it.
- 1:08:55Speaker 5: Don't You can't even look at it, Paul, they don't
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: even go.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: To look at it.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: Every week.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: You can see every Thursday morning, I grandfather different rules,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: like this is not serious?
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: Right, that's another great moment.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: All right back here in Patrios on Field today five
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: to five past five hundred is the Hotline podcast at
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Patriots dot com. Is the email address. It's Evan, Paul, Me, Deuce,
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: Alex and Alex in the booth talking football. We're talking soccer,
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: we're talking you sports, We're talking how to grow the game.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: It's it's all this stuff. It's it's Thursday in the
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: off season, the true off season of the NFL, when
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: nobody's around, nobody except us except us, So we get
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: to talk about whatever we want, and you get to
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: talk about whatever you want. A lot of people were
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: talking about Christian yesterday because they were upset. They think
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: he's trolling. But Christian's on the line. Christian, what's going on? Hey?
- 1:09:57Speaker 12: You I tell you guys.
- 1:09:58Speaker 11: Hey, you guys.
- 1:09:59Speaker 12: No, I'm not I'm not trolling, you know for the
- 1:10:01Speaker 12: little lady in LA that wants me to ask more.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: Oh, it's more than just one person, Christian. You want
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: me to Yeah, yes, have.
- 1:10:10Speaker 11: A whole show of just Christian in LA.
- 1:10:13Speaker 12: Hate that would be Mark.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: I got a feeling you like it. I don't.
- 1:10:19Speaker 12: I don't like it, but I understand why I draw.
- 1:10:21Speaker 12: I did a lot of people that want to be
- 1:10:23Speaker 12: radio famous and they just can't.
- 1:10:25Speaker 11: So here we go.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: With Okay, all right, Tom, but keep going.
- 1:10:33Speaker 12: Yeah, So I'm going to do soccer person then and
- 1:10:35Speaker 12: then football soccer wise. I know we've talked about NFL
- 1:10:39Speaker 12: athletes and how they would develop it the soccer players.
- 1:10:41Speaker 12: But based on their exhibited skill set, if the soccer
- 1:10:46Speaker 12: players that we're talking about were to develop or you know,
- 1:10:48Speaker 12: from youth to develop into football players, what position athletes
- 1:10:53Speaker 12: do you think they would be?
- 1:10:54Speaker 14: I e.
- 1:10:54Speaker 12: They definitely wouldn't be linemen, right, So that's my That's
- 1:10:57Speaker 12: my first question. And then my second question is I
- 1:11:01Speaker 12: put together in my own mind a top five on
- 1:11:04Speaker 12: offense and a top three on defense, and then I said,
- 1:11:07Speaker 12: outside of the top three on offense, who's the one
- 1:11:09Speaker 12: player that if they had an expectional breakout year, would
- 1:11:13Speaker 12: lead the offense to being a top three offense and
- 1:11:15Speaker 12: same thing on defense. So for me, my player was
- 1:11:18Speaker 12: Trevion Henderson, you know, with his potential for a big
- 1:11:23Speaker 12: play and explosive play, his skill set.
- 1:11:26Speaker 5: I feel like with the.
- 1:11:27Speaker 12: Expectations that teams are gonna already have made for a J.
- 1:11:31Speaker 12: Brown and the Drake May and maybe vermondre Stevenson and
- 1:11:34Speaker 12: probably Romeo Dobbs outside of them, if this one guy
- 1:11:39Speaker 12: were to have an X factor year, that to me
- 1:11:42Speaker 12: would put them over the top. So and I have
- 1:11:44Speaker 12: a defensive player too. My question for you guys is
- 1:11:46Speaker 12: who's your top five on offense, the top three on defense,
- 1:11:49Speaker 12: and who is the player outside of that list that
- 1:11:51Speaker 12: you feel that if they had a breakout season, they
- 1:11:56Speaker 12: would help help us be in the top three in
- 1:11:57Speaker 12: the top five And to the lady in LA, is
- 1:12:00Speaker 12: that okay? Now?
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: All right? Okay, so let's let's go with that.
- 1:12:07Speaker 8: I don't know, I'll just go with Kyle Williams rather
- 1:12:09Speaker 8: than name in my top five. I was just somebody
- 1:12:11Speaker 8: outside of the top five who could maybe elevate the team,
- 1:12:14Speaker 8: bring an element of speed and you know, just some
- 1:12:17Speaker 8: young legs with that receiving group. I think you know
- 1:12:19Speaker 8: hopefully what to expect from Brown and Dobbs, But could
- 1:12:22Speaker 8: you have an X factor guy who just has a
- 1:12:24Speaker 8: really good season.
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: Could someone who hasn't had a season yet have a
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: breakout season. I'm thinking gave ocus if he had a
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: great season, how would that elevate the.
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: Probably be a huge help for sure.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think if you're not going to say
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: Travon Henderson and I feel like Kyle Williams is the
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: other pivot, you know, the year two breakout guy, I
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: don't know. I I this is semantics, I guess, But
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: Travon Henderson had twelve hundred yards as a rookie, like
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: he already broke out right like, so like this is
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: I would say more of like a year or two
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: week he had like ten touchdowns.
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: But see that's not fair. And as much as I
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: love Trevion Henderson, by just going by the numbers doesn't
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: give the context of his season and would know that
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: he had a small part of the season where he
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: really broke out. That was that and after that.
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: So to me, and again this is semantics. But to me,
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: he broke out in that October November period of time
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: last year, this would be like a year two leap.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: Like if he went and then did it for a
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: consistent seventeen game that that would be a year two leap. Yeah, because,
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: like I think we already know Trevon Henderson's an NFL player,
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: Like now it's just how good of the NFL players.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: But I think simply saying well, he had twelve hundred yards,
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: which means now he's really really good, that's too simplicit.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: Well, I say it is really really good. But he
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: led you know, we did our preview videos earlier today.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: He led the team in yards and total touchdowns last year.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: This like as a rookie.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: So I mean you can say that it all kind
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: of happened, you know, in a confined time period. But
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: the end of the day, he was the most productive
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: offensive player on the team.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: By the numbers.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, I mean at the end of the day,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: trying to put points on the board, aren't we I.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: Understand, But you do you understand what I'm saying abuse Yeah, yeah,
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: I'm just saying the whole season, right, not just no,
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: I said.
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: It was I said it was a semantics argument. Okay,
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: but I taught you, well, just sit here and say
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: that he needs like he needs to break out. It's
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: like he already broke out, like he needs to stack it.
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: He needs you're too, I think in most reasonable people's
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: definition of breaking out, I don't think he's broken out yet.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: He's had some breakout perform some breakout. He's had some
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: breakout performances and games, but not a season rookie, not
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: a season.
- 1:14:52Speaker 14: Ye.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: So no, I mean, you know, it's different things that
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: I thought that was implied.
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: So, I mean, is Trevion Henderson considered one of the
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: top ten backs in the league.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: No, No, But if he becomes a top ten back
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: in the league, then he made a year two leap.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: Of course he didn't break out.
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: I would say he broke out if he becomes the
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: top ten. I mean, that's a breakout, like he broke
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: out from the path.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: But you're like, so, Kyle Williams had ten catches last year.
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: If all of a sudden, Kyle Williams goes and has
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: like eight hundred yards and you know, sixty catches, he
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: broke out, that was a break I agree with that
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: be a year two leap.
- 1:15:32Speaker 5: I agree, sophomore slump.
- 1:15:35Speaker 9: It's a breakout season in the context of just our
- 1:15:39Speaker 9: New England bubble, or do you consider a breakout season
- 1:15:42Speaker 9: like you've arrived league wide, some cheap fan the last you.
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: Are that that well, I think unfortunately, because of fantasy football,
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: everybody knows who Travon Henderson is. Maybe even if he's
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: not a top ten running back in the league, he's
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: fantasy relevant, so people are going to know who he is.
- 1:16:00Speaker 8: Yeah, it's funny we put we did our preview offense
- 1:16:03Speaker 8: and we talked about running backs, and I brought up
- 1:16:04Speaker 8: the stats, and this is kind of the conversation we
- 1:16:06Speaker 8: had of like, geez, when you really just look at
- 1:16:07Speaker 8: the stats, like you know, it's it's pretty impressive the
- 1:16:09Speaker 8: season he put together.
- 1:16:10Speaker 5: I understand what you're saying, Fred, I'm not trying to
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: argue with.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: You, but but did he break argue?
- 1:16:14Speaker 8: But looking at his playoff like I didn't, I don't
- 1:16:17Speaker 8: really looked at his playoffs stats. How many how many
- 1:16:19Speaker 8: snaps he played in the FC Championship four snaps?
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Four snaps?
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: Evan's like, yeah, yeah, but I mean the production too,
- 1:16:28Speaker 5: is I.
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: Mean because the beginning in the end was bad. Yeah,
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: I agree.
- 1:16:33Speaker 7: That's why I sort of agree with both of you,
- 1:16:35Speaker 7: which is why I didn't get involved in arguing.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: We are I would have jumped in. It just depends
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: on which it right.
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: Stats and I think.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: Really good game.
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: If the rookie showed.
- 1:16:49Speaker 8: Flashes of it, that's good enough for me. You know, like,
- 1:16:52Speaker 8: I don't know breaking up very promising he showed.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: But did he break out? Pick a side, dude on
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: the not how he did it.
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: It's gonna be funny to during like he's breaking out?
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: Is he though he already broke out?
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: And you know he's.
- 1:17:08Speaker 7: Gonna that's gonna come down. That's gonna come down on
- 1:17:13Speaker 7: a post game show. That's a breakout performance from Trevion
- 1:17:16Speaker 7: Henderson today, the.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: Same one he had last year on the table had
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: three times. The question is it puts the jelly donut down?
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:17:26Speaker 5: That was a breakout game.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: Can a breakout game? Can a breakout? Well? Breakout performances
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: are what they are, and he had some of those.
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: But can a play a breakout in three or four
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: games or does he have to do it prove it
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: over a season?
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: That's that's the that's why Travon Henderson is such a
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: good person to use this yet, because he broke out
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: for like a month last year. He was a Rookie
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: of the Month for the NFL, I think in November.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: I think it was last year.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: So did he have a breakout season? Right? Right?
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: Did he break Did Jonas Gray break out against the
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: Colts again?
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: Right? And he never played again?
- 1:18:07Speaker 10: Still hanging around the community events though he is.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: He's the nicest guys.
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: I had no idea what to expect my first time.
- 1:18:14Speaker 8: I had to do like a oh man, we had
- 1:18:17Speaker 8: to do a like a It was, I guess you
- 1:18:19Speaker 8: could call it a rally. It was before the Buffalo
- 1:18:21Speaker 8: playoff game in twenty one and like we're doing a
- 1:18:23Speaker 8: little thing.
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: It wasn't anything like as big as we usually do.
- 1:18:27Speaker 8: And it was up in the up and Patriot Place
- 1:18:29Speaker 8: and it had to be twenty below zero with like
- 1:18:31Speaker 8: a wind chill.
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: There's like eight people there, you know, it's the Friday night.
- 1:18:35Speaker 8: And then Jonas Gray was there, but he was great,
- 1:18:38Speaker 8: brought us ring and everything that awesome.
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: Henry from Yorkshire, Henri right, Sin haven't had a chance
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: to listen yesterday's show, but I want to know, if
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: you guys saw the scut and fans at Fenway Soccer
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: fans really know how to enjoy themselves. I did.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: I don't know how much.
- 1:18:55Speaker 9: Fomo, how could you not about the Red Sox games
- 1:18:58Speaker 9: this weekend? As someone testing Red Sox games until they're
- 1:19:02Speaker 9: good again, I like, for the first time all season,
- 1:19:05Speaker 9: I was like, that looks electric.
- 1:19:07Speaker 10: That looks like just being in Boston in general looks
- 1:19:09Speaker 10: like so much.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: I hear, it's a great atmosphere.
- 1:19:12Speaker 9: I also saw a video of a New York news
- 1:19:15Speaker 9: reporter interviewing Scottish people on the streets because they had
- 1:19:18Speaker 9: to move now to New York City.
- 1:19:20Speaker 10: And they're like, oh, what are you How are you
- 1:19:21Speaker 10: liking New York And they're all like, it's not as
- 1:19:23Speaker 10: good as Boston. We want to go back, and right.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: I love that, love it.
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: It was last weekend. We were out a little bit
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: and there's a lot of people. Now I've seen it
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: way too many social media videos about it, but there's
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: a lot of people and it was a lot of
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: fun and they're all very very nice, and I try
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: to give them some pointers about you know, Gillette in
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: the area and you know, come into a game here
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: and stuff like that.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: So that was cool to go to Jersey.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: Mikes.
- 1:19:48Speaker 13: No.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: I told them that I worked at the stadium though,
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: and I think they thought that I was like a
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: stadium worker and not like you know, I didn't know
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: that and then nothing. I just think that they got it.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: I do.
- 1:20:00Speaker 10: I just think talent.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: I just think that they were really.
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: In front of the camera.
- 1:20:08Speaker 5: I have a podcast.
- 1:20:09Speaker 8: Actually I did like four hours straight on Wednesday.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: We're never gonna finish.
- 1:20:18Speaker 17: It just was funny because they I think they're not
- 1:20:21Speaker 17: we met this errand really arrogant blow. I think they
- 1:20:26Speaker 17: just had got the wrong idea of the type of
- 1:20:28Speaker 17: person they were.
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: They thought that they were meeting somebody that you know,
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: this man does not do physically, Yeah, is not direct people. Yeah, Yeah,
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: they they were. They were very nice. It's a new
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: version of the you know themselves.
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: So also, Henry has a way too early over under
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: for the season. Low MoU plays on offense. Uh, I
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: don't know what to fifty point five? Oh plays, not
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: plays but actual play. The number of plays he does
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: on offense two hundred and fifty point five or what
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: is the average for a tackle?
- 1:21:06Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: Well, starting one seven. Yeah, he plays every snap.
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: Would oh low move.
- 1:21:13Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm going to say under half. Okay, I'm on
- 1:21:16Speaker 7: a bank on me on the side of health, good health.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: Even if he's in the six a line package, that
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: they're only going to do that one hundred times. Yeah,
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: So I would say I would say.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: Under raredan catches twenty five and a hay under take
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: the under and that rookies that make the fifty three
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: man roster six and a.
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: Hope please, Well there's nine draft picks.
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: Three of them are lost.
- 1:21:43Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm going to say under when I under six
- 1:21:46Speaker 7: and a half six to say under, I don't think
- 1:21:48Speaker 7: there's that many.
- 1:21:50Speaker 5: I think Prenty you make is it?
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:21:51Speaker 5: And after that, I don't know.
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: Uh gave gave Acus contracts signed a hey.
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: Like will he signed over? Eventually he will sign I.
- 1:22:03Speaker 8: Guess he was in the Blue Square Alliance video. Was
- 1:22:06Speaker 8: that we posted yesterday? Was Akis in the building?
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: I appreciate that so much about our fan base. We
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: put out a video. Yeah, like it's the DiCaprio.
- 1:22:17Speaker 10: It doesn't break down community film.
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: I did break it down, but I thought that it
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: would probably best to not, you know, tweet about him.
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: Being in the video. So I let everybody.
- 1:22:26Speaker 8: Seriously though, like we talked about contract and all that, like,
- 1:22:29Speaker 8: is that off the field kind of stuff not part
- 1:22:33Speaker 8: of that? Like, I mean, is this any kind of
- 1:22:34Speaker 8: sign of contract?
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: Didn't you be here?
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: Couldn't be here during my point last.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: Week because there's something else going on and that we
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: don't know what it is.
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: But it is interesting that he was. Yeah, that could
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: have been right after the draft.
- 1:22:50Speaker 9: It could have been their first thing and reporting and
- 1:22:52Speaker 9: we've been sitting on.
- 1:22:53Speaker 5: It unless.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: Unless that was a turn and burnt I have a
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: rookie event.
- 1:23:01Speaker 7: Though that could have been absolutely could have been done
- 1:23:05Speaker 7: right after they were drafted.
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: Yeah, for all we know. Yeah.
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: Uh. I originally wanted to ask about ocus sacks five
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: point seven five, but I'm now starting to get worried.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: That's that's the use of the seven five five and
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: a half. We don't want to push we can have
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: a half that's half sacks bug me. Yeah, I don't
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: like it, especially when when three guys share a sax. Yeah,
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: it's like, can we just so what do you somebody?
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: Somebody hit the quarterback first.
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: Over under sacks for Ocus five point seven five under.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: I'm going to say he's gonna get like three or four. Yeah,
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: I don't. I don't what did Ponder get last year?
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: Four?
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm going to take the under. I feel like
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: I'm being a gas lit a little bit about Achis
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: and what his skill set is. And maybe it's just
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: a me thing, but I I've heard some grousing some
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: things from the scribes about how he's going to come
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: in and be like Joshua and this like third down
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: pass rush role and all that kind of stuff, and
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: I just I don't see him as that kind of player.
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: Like I see him as a rugged, power oriented edge setting,
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: you know, like talking a lot about effort and finish
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: and you know how he plays with a nasty and
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: like stuff like that, Like that's not a two hundred
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: and forty pound third down pass rusher.
- 1:24:21Speaker 8: I wonder how much time he needs because I feel
- 1:24:23Speaker 8: like a lot of what they do a lot.
- 1:24:25Speaker 5: Of stunts, and you neque experience with that.
- 1:24:27Speaker 8: You need practice with the timing of it, and you
- 1:24:29Speaker 8: know how to come off of those kind.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: Of I agree with both of those absolutely.
- 1:24:33Speaker 7: I think that And I think Christian might have asked, no,
- 1:24:36Speaker 7: someone asked yesterday if that was a position that it
- 1:24:40Speaker 7: wasn't as important that he was missing time because of that, Like, yeah,
- 1:24:43Speaker 7: and I think the same person who's trying to gaslight
- 1:24:46Speaker 7: Evan was suggesting that, like it's, you know, Seaball get ball,
- 1:24:50Speaker 7: And I don't really think that's the kind of player
- 1:24:52Speaker 7: he is. And I do think a lot of what
- 1:24:54Speaker 7: the Patriots do up front is a little bit sophisticated.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: It's not just Seaball get ball. Yeah, I think there's
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: definitely an element that that's probably most of it is
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: Seaball get ball. For a player like that, I just
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: think his role. I've always thought that he was going
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: to be a better early down player than laid down
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: player to start. The pass rush was the question mark
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: with him is does he.
- 1:25:14Speaker 7: Have So that's why speed I guess was under on
- 1:25:18Speaker 7: that because that, you know, and Mike is the one
- 1:25:20Speaker 7: that kind of got me on accus originally in I
- 1:25:24Speaker 7: don't know March or I was like.
- 1:25:25Speaker 5: Two years ago. I think I was already grinding.
- 1:25:28Speaker 7: Mill I saw, you know, it's it's kind of I
- 1:25:32Speaker 7: think he's I think he's I hope hopefully they can
- 1:25:35Speaker 7: save the leg got enough. I think it's he's a
- 1:25:39Speaker 7: really good football player, but not not. I wouldn't I
- 1:25:43Speaker 7: think what Evan said, he I wouldn't just consider him
- 1:25:46Speaker 7: like this dynamic athlete coming off the edge. I think
- 1:25:50Speaker 7: he wins with effort and finish and all that stuff.
- 1:25:53Speaker 7: Which is why I lowered the number, because if that's
- 1:25:56Speaker 7: how you're winning in college, it's going to be harder
- 1:25:58Speaker 7: to win that way. Now, he could still be a
- 1:25:59Speaker 7: really good player and not necessarily be twelve thirteen sac guy. Like,
- 1:26:04Speaker 7: he could still be tough and have a high motor
- 1:26:07Speaker 7: and all that stuff and beat blocks and collapse the
- 1:26:10Speaker 7: pocket and like, you know.
- 1:26:12Speaker 8: Like you know, not to like set a low ceiling
- 1:26:14Speaker 8: on him, but you know, like Nikovitch didn't have a
- 1:26:15Speaker 8: lot of juice, but but.
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: He he came, he came up with his plays. Absolutely.
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: I just have to mention this. We're watching World Cup
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: and this guy's writhing on the ground and pain and
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: while he's on the ground, his teammate just bounced the
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: ball off his head. Did you catch that?
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: I missed it?
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:26:35Speaker 8: I I really didn't want to do a thing about
- 1:26:37Speaker 8: the injuries of soccer, but I like, we watched sports
- 1:26:39Speaker 8: for a living, and you know, and I'm always so
- 1:26:42Speaker 8: attuned to injuries and like when guys go down on
- 1:26:45Speaker 8: the football field, I am like, oh no, like what
- 1:26:48Speaker 8: is this and this soccer game, it's like every single
- 1:26:51Speaker 8: one the guy's down like that's a broken leg, Like
- 1:26:53Speaker 8: he is writhing on the field. I've seen guys break
- 1:26:56Speaker 8: their leg in football and not react the way that.
- 1:26:59Speaker 5: And then they cut away in the can and then
- 1:27:00Speaker 5: it comes back.
- 1:27:02Speaker 18: I thought you were a thing, and I thought, but
- 1:27:06Speaker 18: one thing about soccer that I don't think we understand
- 1:27:11Speaker 18: is that you can get kicked in the shin or
- 1:27:14Speaker 18: your footsteps on and it happens so fast because these
- 1:27:18Speaker 18: guys feed are so quick that the only way they
- 1:27:21Speaker 18: feel they can get the ref's attention is to do that.
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: Because sometimes like and you think it's just attack this
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: guy so strong, it actually does hurt more than you think.
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: Where there's no contact.
- 1:27:34Speaker 19: At all, Like I said, it is out of control,
- 1:27:37Speaker 19: which is the majority of a lot of times, like
- 1:27:40Speaker 19: you have to like slow it down frame by frame
- 1:27:42Speaker 19: to actually see the contact because these guys are so
- 1:27:45Speaker 19: their feeder.
- 1:27:46Speaker 8: I wish against the Ravens like three times a game,
- 1:27:49Speaker 8: so like I wish, I wish I.
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: Could like make fun of it more. But like the
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: NBA has gotten really bad. With the NBA is absolutely
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: every bit we're getting close to that being you know,
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: almost as bad as European soccer. So like you know,
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: if one of our sports is doing it.
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: Then even the NBA again, you know.
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: The head heads and the landing space foul.
- 1:28:12Speaker 7: I always say that the new logoh, they should replace
- 1:28:14Speaker 7: Jerry West with Lebron checking.
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: Like every time you drive to the hoop, if a
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: guy you know, goes to finish at the rim, he
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: ends up on the ground and you're just like you
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: get his land on your two feet, like you don't
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: have to fall.
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: Even the NBA, like these guys are so fast that
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: like a lot of times, like you'll see something and
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: the guy will like, oh, you're like, nothing happened, and
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: then they really slow it down and sure enough he
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: got an elbow to the to the cheek or you know.
- 1:28:39Speaker 7: So I see more often than not there was no
- 1:28:41Speaker 7: contact at all. And I and in Fred's point about
- 1:28:44Speaker 7: it being hard to see, like I don't blame the
- 1:28:45Speaker 7: refs because it is hard to see in real time
- 1:28:48Speaker 7: how fast these guys are going, how gifted they are.
- 1:28:51Speaker 7: But the reactions to me a comical and it's every
- 1:28:54Speaker 7: bit before I get the soccer hate, it's not socked.
- 1:28:57Speaker 7: Every bit is bad in the NBA. Every bit is the.
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: Thing that epidemic in the NBA is falling down after
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: you shoot that. That has become every single guy. And
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: it's not so much like my landing area, but that
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: I think the landing area thing has gotten worse than
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: the the oh he hit my arm flop like that.
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: That now the landing area thing, you know, s g
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: A is probably the worst. Like every time SGA takes
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: a jump shot, he's on the ground and you're just like.
- 1:29:27Speaker 8: Single get up like It's just it's kind of be
- 1:29:30Speaker 8: hard as a player to be like, I gotta make
- 1:29:31Speaker 8: this one look good, like and you mean, you got
- 1:29:33Speaker 8: to act like it's there, like just the line.
- 1:29:35Speaker 9: Then like they look around, they see no one cares,
- 1:29:37Speaker 9: and they get back up and they call. He's like,
- 1:29:39Speaker 9: if you did that five seconds ago, maybe you could
- 1:29:41Speaker 9: have followed up the play gotten.
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: Lay in the finals doing this to pick on the Knicks.
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: But like Jalen brunts and flopped so bad he almost
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: hurt himself. He landed on his tailbone because he flew
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: back to try to sell the call and he landed
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: on his tailbone and he like like ding himself up,
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: like trying to.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: I did that. I took charge and as a defender,
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: I you know, sold it, kind of sold it and
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: I landed flat on my back and everyone's like, good play,
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: good play, And I'm like, you know, for a week, yeah,
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: your tailbone is I sold that one a little bit.
- 1:30:18Speaker 7: Too real, I will say, you know, with all my
- 1:30:21Speaker 7: soccer snark, I've been watching this Czech South Africa game.
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: It's been a pretty good game.
- 1:30:26Speaker 7: There's been good scoring chances up and down the field,
- 1:30:30Speaker 7: even though it's only one nothing.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: I would say this has been an entertaining some of
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: the games.
- 1:30:33Speaker 8: I don't know if this is a trend in soccer,
- 1:30:35Speaker 8: but like an early goal and then not like it's strange,
- 1:30:37Speaker 8: like I've seen a lot of goals quick off.
- 1:30:39Speaker 7: But the teams have had the chances. Both teams have
- 1:30:42Speaker 7: had a lot of chances since that early goal.
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: There's was a lot of concern about it from myself,
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: included about them expanding to forty eight teams and watering
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: it down the tournament. But I think a lot of
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: these smaller countries have actually held their own a lot
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: of these games now like Cape Verds that's the pinnacle,
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: but a lot of these teams have have been competitive,
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: like more competitive than what.
- 1:31:04Speaker 9: Drew Portugal yesterday after an early Portuguese beronal though oh yeah.
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: Wow aj in Providence. To have a breakout season means
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: to develop in a particular area of your game and
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: or demonstrate better consistency at the things you do well.
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: Henderson made tremendous plays, but lack consistency. He needs avoiding
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: getting stopped for no gain so often. He needs to
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: improve in this aspect of the game so that when
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: he doesn't break a big run, he can at least
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: pick up a few yards most of the time. Yeah,
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: I mean, that's my biggest question with him is just
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: you know, Kenny see it a little.
- 1:31:41Speaker 5: I mean, have you laid it out pretty well?
- 1:31:42Speaker 8: Like, you know, we know he's explosive when he can
- 1:31:44Speaker 8: find that space. It's just does he have trouble finding it?
- 1:31:48Speaker 8: And you know, just again looking at the stats, it's
- 1:31:50Speaker 8: there were plenty of examples in the Super Bowl or
- 1:31:53Speaker 8: even in the playoffs where it's just like there's.
- 1:31:55Speaker 5: Nothing there and he just running right in the offensive
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: line right.
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: Now he's got I think pacing out runs is my
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: biggest thing with him this year is like you gotta
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: do that Le'Veon bell every once in a while where
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: you gotta let it develop and you gotta sometimes you
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: don't need to be zero to sixty in a blank
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: like you want to run, you know always, I want
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: to run at full speed. A lot of guys would say,
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: you know, receivers and running backs they hardly ever run
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: at full speed because they're trying to set things up
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: and they're trying to, you know, create those creases and
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: stuff like that before they hit the gas. So him,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: you know, you gotta have gears like you're in a
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: five speed. Don't always be in the fifth gear. You know,
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: you gotta start in one and build your way up.
- 1:32:36Speaker 5: Just be interesting to watch how that develops.
- 1:32:38Speaker 8: I'm just I'm very curious as a skill set if
- 1:32:40Speaker 8: that is something you can develop or is it you.
- 1:32:43Speaker 5: Can see it or you can't see it.
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: Yeah, Sully the die hot Patriots fan. So for those
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: cluded to football as a whole former universities. Since a
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: QB Brendan Soresby is potentially going to go in the
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: NFL Supplemental Draft in July two questions, what do you
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: think line is on Sworsby going for a second round
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: or above? And what is the line on Sworsby placing
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: a bet on that line? We got in troubles.
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: I think that this is one of the more interesting
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: offseason stories that we've had because he admits that he
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: gambled on his own team. Yeah, and then he's going
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: to Texas Tech and an il deal. He played at
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: Cincinnati last year and now he's playing at Texas Tech.
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: He Texas Tech kind of went down with the ship
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: with him at first, and all these teams around Texas
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: Tech are opting out of playing games against Texas Tech
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: because they have originally backed Sorsby. Now Sorsby, who a
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: judge approved him playing in the NCAA. Now he's saying,
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: even though he still has eligibility, he wants to go
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: to the supplemental draft. Technically, the supplemental draft is only
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: if you're out of eligibility for some reason. So that's
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: a whole like loophole that he now has to work around.
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: You know, there's some people that are trying to make
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: this is he any good?
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: Well?
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: I was gutting to that there are some people that
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: are trying to make this out to be a little
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: bit more than I think it is. You know, there
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: are a lot of people that are saying he has
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: first round caliber tape, and he's a first round talent.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: And you know, if he was drafted normally, if you
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: went to Texas deck had a good year drafted normally,
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: he was gonna have a chance to be a pretty
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: high pick in the upcoming draft. I didn't really see
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: that when I watched Cincinnati's offense last year. I wasn't
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: watching him specifically, but I didn't really like think, oh, wow,
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: this is some future NFL star at quarterback that they have.
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: But he's definitely somebody that I think is worth a
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: Day two pick in the supplemental draft from a team.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: And you're gonna have teams like the Jets, the Dolphins,
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: the Cardinals, the Browns potentially, you know, these quarterback needy
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: teams that might be in line to take him. So
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: to the Emailers question, I think you might have to
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: put in for a second round pick to win the bid.
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: You know, you might win it at the third round,
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: but I think the second round, if you really want
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: to win it and you really want the kid I
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: think you have to put in a second round pick.
- 1:35:00Speaker 7: I've seen a lot of people throw second round out there.
- 1:35:04Speaker 7: Seems a little rich. And just to let people know
- 1:35:06Speaker 7: how that process works is if you it's the same
- 1:35:11Speaker 7: order as the draft order, and you submit a round
- 1:35:15Speaker 7: that you are interested in, and basically if you say
- 1:35:18Speaker 7: second round pick and someone else's second round pick, but
- 1:35:22Speaker 7: you pick first.
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: Like you know, in Evans case, Cleveland.
- 1:35:25Speaker 7: Would have priority over the Patriots if they both put
- 1:35:28Speaker 7: a second round pick in, so it's whoever submitted the
- 1:35:31Speaker 7: highest pick would get the rights. The Patriots did a
- 1:35:35Speaker 7: supplemental draft. I think my first year that I was
- 1:35:37Speaker 7: here Fred with Gerrod Cherry doing him.
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: Sure, yeah, it used to be more popular.
- 1:35:42Speaker 7: It was a fourth rounder I think at the time.
- 1:35:44Speaker 7: But Bobby Greer I remember we were at a preseason
- 1:35:47Speaker 7: game and Bobby Greer told us that whole process of
- 1:35:50Speaker 7: how it went down.
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: I think there hasn't been one in the while, but
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: there's been some success stories.
- 1:35:56Speaker 7: I think the last one they had was twenty three
- 1:35:58Speaker 7: and no one was taken. Yeah, almost no one submitted
- 1:36:01Speaker 7: a bit.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I think the best player was probably
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: Josh Gordon. Recently, Torrell Pryor was a supplemental draft pick
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: as well. But you know, there's it's not It's not
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: like it never produces a player. You know, Josh Gordon
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: was until he went off the rails as a good player.
- 1:36:17Speaker 7: So now there's a handful of guys that have been okay.
- 1:36:21Speaker 7: But it's an interesting point you bring up about the eligibility. Yeah,
- 1:36:27Speaker 7: the draft eligibility, because technically he is kind of eligible
- 1:36:30Speaker 7: right now, even though I don't think that's going to
- 1:36:33Speaker 7: end up being the case. I think eventually, you know,
- 1:36:37Speaker 7: all right, they could come to their senses and maybe
- 1:36:39Speaker 7: you have someone not from Lubbock, Texas make the ruling right.
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: On flag football, Ben in the Truck says, it seems
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: to me that every commercial I see for flag football
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: is for NFL branded leagues. Is it possible the league's
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: promotion of flag football over tackle is also financially motivated.
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: I'm look, money is always part of everything, but right now,
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: I don't think the league. They give them those brands,
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: they don't make them license that are paid for it,
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: so they're not making money off of that. They just
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: hope that having those brands out there will get people
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: aware and more interested in the NFL at a young age.
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: But I'm not sure that's how it's gonna work.
- 1:37:18Speaker 8: I mean, they're still supporting the pro the like the
- 1:37:21Speaker 8: Pop Warner leagues and things like that.
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: I'm sure they're I'm sure they do support it, but
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: they don't make a big thing about it. No, I
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: can tell you that much because we're asking the question.
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: You know, I don't know how they support it. Yeah,
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: I mean that's honestly, I don't know.
- 1:37:35Speaker 8: It's just what makes it hard because it seems like
- 1:37:37Speaker 8: you're kind of hiding from the problem. Whereas if you
- 1:37:39Speaker 8: were educating people and educating coaches, and you know that
- 1:37:43Speaker 8: are certainly risks with every sport, and the best way
- 1:37:46Speaker 8: to offset those risk is education and practice and understanding,
- 1:37:50Speaker 8: you know, from a young age how to take a hit.
- 1:37:52Speaker 5: I mean, I think that's the you know, big thing
- 1:37:54Speaker 5: I heard one of.
- 1:37:54Speaker 8: The high school football coaches talk about, is you know,
- 1:37:56Speaker 8: kids get in like they gonna learn how to take
- 1:37:58Speaker 8: a hit. I mean, you know these kids have now
- 1:38:00Speaker 8: a lot of these kids had never been hit before.
- 1:38:01Speaker 8: And then you know, you're fourteen, fifteen years old, you
- 1:38:03Speaker 8: get to high.
- 1:38:04Speaker 5: School and all of a sudden, you getting plowed.
- 1:38:05Speaker 8: It's it's a big adjustment sometimes that scares people right
- 1:38:08Speaker 8: out of the game.
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: Yeah. I think the there's been some stuff out there
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: about how to hit, but I feel like we don't
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: talk enough about how to be hit.
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: Ye.
- 1:38:17Speaker 5: It's like the jiu jitsu.
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: Yeah, like and there is a science their weight against
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: them yeah man. Yeah, and like you know, making sure
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: your head doesn't snap back and all that good stuff.
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: That's Fred's but they have the head, you know, head
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: up football and you know, keeping your head out of
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: tackles and stuff like that, and more tackling like a
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: rugby player would, where you're wrapping with your shoulder and
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: your arms. I think is something that they're that USA
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: Football is trying to promote more of instead of like
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: in the NFL now calls a fifteen yard penalty. Yeah,
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: like torpedoing. You're like, you know, like Sean Taylor.
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: I always said that, like, you know, if your arms
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: are at your side when you're trying to make a tackle,
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: you're not trying to make a tackle. You're trying to
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: make a hit. You know, Like the idea would be
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: to wrap up and bring him down, you know.
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: So Jalen Hawkins.
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: Christian from Austria writes in a few points about soccer.
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: First of all, you massively overestimate the importance of athleticism.
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: Soccer is more of an endurance sport, and every professional
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: player has a certain level of athleticism. Far more important
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: is skill with the ball in understanding the flow of
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: the game, just like a linebacker that is a step
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: early because he knows what's coming. The point about coaching
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: not being there is true, but it's far earlier than
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: when kids start playing in a club. Every toddler in
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: soccer crazy nations get put a ball put in front
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: of them as soon as they start walking, and gets
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: taught by their parents how to kick a ball correctly.
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: The youth soccer coaches in the village clubs are also
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: parents and volunteers here, but unlike most Americans, they all
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: played the game themselves. And lastly, and like the American
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: sports that you play with your hands, in soccer, you
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: need to develop skills with your feet. Running fast is
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: only as useful as you can run fast while controlling
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: the ball. To Fred's point about America having the population numbers,
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: Russia and China already tried that and failed miserably. I
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: look forward to you continuing the discussion while the World
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: Cup is on.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: I like that.
- 1:40:24Speaker 8: I mean that speaks to you know when I said yesterday,
- 1:40:25Speaker 8: but the fabric of the society. I mean, these are
- 1:40:28Speaker 8: kids that grow up and they are handed a soccer
- 1:40:30Speaker 8: ball and that's you know, what they're doing from minute one.
- 1:40:32Speaker 8: They're the people they're looking up to. They're gathering around
- 1:40:34Speaker 8: and watching games together. It's you know, that's all part
- 1:40:38Speaker 8: of it.
- 1:40:38Speaker 9: So I said at the beginning, the difference isn't with
- 1:40:41Speaker 9: American soccer, isn't athletes or numbers. It's it's the skill.
- 1:40:45Speaker 9: It's the way they're playing the game, which is.
- 1:40:48Speaker 7: What I mean by athleticism. And I unfortunately use that
- 1:40:51Speaker 7: word and everybody's fixated on it. Well, so I can't run,
- 1:40:54Speaker 7: I can't put the toothpaste back again.
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: Is there a difference between skill and athletics. Yes, And
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: so he's saying it's more about skill than it being
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: an athlete.
- 1:41:06Speaker 8: But I think it's more easy to develop skills I'm
- 1:41:08Speaker 8: talking about.
- 1:41:11Speaker 7: I'm talking like when I bring up a guy like
- 1:41:13Speaker 7: Tyreek Hill or Stefan Diggs, I'm looking at their skill set,
- 1:41:17Speaker 7: not like to Evan's point, they might run the forty
- 1:41:21Speaker 7: yard dash in a similar time that a lot of
- 1:41:24Speaker 7: these soccer players do. That's not what I'm talking about
- 1:41:26Speaker 7: their endurance and whatnot. It's probably similar to these guys
- 1:41:29Speaker 7: are world class athletes. I'm talking about a skill set
- 1:41:32Speaker 7: that I think there are other players that might be
- 1:41:36Speaker 7: better at the skill if they did what.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: The email is talking about.
- 1:41:41Speaker 7: If they if they grew up with a soccer ball
- 1:41:43Speaker 7: on their foot three years old, I think that they
- 1:41:47Speaker 7: have a skill set that would translate and in this country,
- 1:41:52Speaker 7: for better or worse. I'm not telling you it's right
- 1:41:54Speaker 7: or wrong. They don't gravitate to that sport. They gravitate
- 1:41:57Speaker 7: to other sports.
- 1:41:58Speaker 9: Well, that comes with time. Like that comes, it's so
- 1:42:00Speaker 9: much time. It's like golf, It's like hitting a baseball.
- 1:42:03Speaker 9: It's reps, it's practice.
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: Golf is a perfect example.
- 1:42:06Speaker 7: I don't think a lot of people would say a
- 1:42:08Speaker 7: golfer is a tremendous athlete.
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: Okay, but there are a lot.
- 1:42:13Speaker 7: I mean, like brooks Kepta is like respect totally, but
- 1:42:17Speaker 7: like Rory McElroy is a tremendous condition tiger. They have athleticism,
- 1:42:23Speaker 7: but it's more of a skill that I'm talking about
- 1:42:25Speaker 7: than they're just pure athletics, like.
- 1:42:27Speaker 10: Ricky Fowler too. That's most people wouldn't look at him
- 1:42:30Speaker 10: and be like, that's an athlete, you know, great golfer.
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: Daily dark.
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: How much would it benefit the United States as a
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: country to be the superpower of soccer in the world benefit.
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: I think it would benefit the world stage. I don't know,
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: probably not any more than us being a superpower and
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: basket in.
- 1:42:59Speaker 2: Other words, you know, you always look at the benefits,
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: the financial or otherwise. Is it more beneficial for the
- 1:43:06Speaker 2: country to be better at soccer than American football?
- 1:43:10Speaker 3: Well?
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: I do think that because soccer is so internationally famous
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: that if you look at like the athletes that have
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: like the most like social media followers, it's almost always
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: soccer players. Oh yeah, because they there's just such a
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: larger audience, because the whole world, it's the whole world.
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: They have more than their team themselves.
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: Yeah right, so I guess in that sense it probably
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: would be better. Official was it.
- 1:43:33Speaker 9: The Cape Verdian goalkeeper got eight million followers overnight? Yeah, overnight,
- 1:43:38Speaker 9: you can he could never play a game of soccer again,
- 1:43:41Speaker 9: And with eight million followers, you can make a living
- 1:43:43Speaker 9: for the rest of your life.
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: Dude's a man. He's forty.
- 1:43:46Speaker 10: I'm a man.
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: Uh call from Galway. Just a quick note or point
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: that the qualification for US to a World Cup is
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: much easier than that for a European team where the
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: teams are much better. On average, teams can struggle like
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: Italy and a lot of similarly talented teams as the
- 1:44:05Speaker 2: US find it hard to compete.
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: There's some truth to that, but there's also you know,
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: Europe has more like ways to qualify that be to
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: try to circumvent that, because it is would be unfair
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: if it was like, you know, equal across the board.
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: You know, US qualifies through CONCA cap not this time
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: because of they hosted in the host nation automatically makes it.
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: But I think the US would have qualified anyways. But yeah,
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: it's it's a good point. You know that they're they're
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: they try their best to create like quality playoff qualifiers
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: and stuff like that that would allow like Italy did
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: it to himself, Like I'm not giving Italy and out like.
- 1:44:45Speaker 2: I'm not giving it.
- 1:44:46Speaker 7: I'm just saying they're better, Like they may they underachieved
- 1:44:50Speaker 7: and they have no one to blame.
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: But themselves.
- 1:44:51Speaker 7: But I mean, just it's tempt team the better, and
- 1:44:56Speaker 7: just because ones in the World Cup and one isn't.
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: The email is right now, they're definitely historically better. For sure,
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: they're not even close. Definitely a much bigger soccer power.
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: I don't know if the eleven guys in Italy would
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: feel tomorrow versus our eleven guys that. I don't know
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: if that how competitive that game would be.
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: Let's see a lot of emails all different subjects. Eric says,
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: I've been really enjoying the off season talk so far.
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: The shows have been fantastic, even when you're talking about
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: the obvious fact that there has to be life somewhere
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: else in the galaxy. It's just too big for humans
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: to be the only intelligent life out there. The World
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: Cup has really taken over the timeline on my social media,
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: and I wanted to ask which every four year event
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: do you like more, the World Cup or the Summer Olympics.
- 1:45:50Speaker 7: Ah, I like the Winter Olympics more than Okay, we'll
- 1:45:55Speaker 7: throw that in there, winter Summer or World win.
- 1:45:58Speaker 8: Olympics, but I'd probably go Summer Olympics just more variety.
- 1:46:02Speaker 7: I like the winner because of the hockey. I the
- 1:46:04Speaker 7: hockey's tremendous. But yeah, I would say both Olympics for me.
- 1:46:07Speaker 7: But I mean, obviously I'm not a soccer.
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: Is the World Baseball thing is that every four years
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: it's going to be And this last one was awesome,
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: was one.
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: Of the better. And the hockey one was good too.
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: Well that was four nations the Olympics or the Olympics. Yeah,
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: but yeah, the World Baseball Classic was a huge success
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: this time around. It was really good and really competitive
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: games and dominant teams and everything. But I don't know,
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: it's a hard question because they're also different, Like the
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: Olympics is dominated.
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: By which one do you spend more time watching?
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: I watch a lot of all of it.
- 1:46:45Speaker 8: I think I watch about the same. I flipped them on.
- 1:46:47Speaker 8: I watch a little here and there. I'm never like
- 1:46:50Speaker 8: sitting down to oh I got to watch the five
- 1:46:52Speaker 8: hundred event.
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: Here's the other thing that we have to remember about
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: this year's World Cup. It's in our time zone. So
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: I remember last World Summer Olympics. Where was it?
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: It was in last Summer Olympics. The one that just
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: happened was in Europe, wasn't it. But you mean the
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: Winter Olympics whatever whatever it was France. Yeah, yeah, the.
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: Time zone was like it sucked because things have already happened,
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: and you know, you didn't get a lot of live
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: stuff that night when you sat down. This is perfect
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: for us because it's all live at night when we
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: in prime time.
- 1:47:27Speaker 7: Yeah, I thought, like, I mean, I think the Olympics,
- 1:47:29Speaker 7: the Winter Olympics that just finished in February, we were in Italy,
- 1:47:33Speaker 7: and so that you know that there's an obvious time
- 1:47:36Speaker 7: but there was a lot of stuff that you got
- 1:47:37Speaker 7: to watch live. Now there's a lot of stuff to
- 1:47:39Speaker 7: Fred's point that was you already knew, but like if
- 1:47:42Speaker 7: you want to you know, not no results and watch
- 1:47:45Speaker 7: you can. Like I watched those hockey games live and
- 1:47:49Speaker 7: they were at odd times that the women and men
- 1:47:51Speaker 7: were both tremendous to watch those, you know, the tournaments.
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the gold medal basketball game was like
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: early afternoon here because it was like a night game
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: in Paris, but.
- 1:48:04Speaker 9: Before like the metal rounds and stuff like are you
- 1:48:07Speaker 9: watching the early stage games and stuff like for the US.
- 1:48:12Speaker 5: I watched.
- 1:48:14Speaker 7: I watched that, But I'm and that that might just
- 1:48:17Speaker 7: be like the reason why I would say winter over
- 1:48:19Speaker 7: summers because I probably like hockey more than I like basketball.
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: Same same, you like hockey more than basketball.
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: Yeah, when you already knew that about Deuce.
- 1:48:27Speaker 7: Really, I mean, come on, yeah, you really do, especially
- 1:48:30Speaker 7: at the pro level.
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: You're not just being performative.
- 1:48:32Speaker 7: Yeah, college, I could do. You have to be college
- 1:48:36Speaker 7: I could. I could make an argument for March madness.
- 1:48:38Speaker 7: And you know, like the college basketball tournament's much better
- 1:48:41Speaker 7: than the college hockey tournament, even though I love you.
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: Like hockey better because Northeastern is better at hockey.
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: No, that's good.
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: I'm trying to figure this out here.
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: It's a great watch.
- 1:48:52Speaker 5: Do you not like hockey, Fred.
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: Or I like hockey?
- 1:48:55Speaker 7: It's that the NBA's If you asked me that question
- 1:48:58Speaker 7: in the eighties, it would have been the opposite. I
- 1:49:00Speaker 7: would have said the basketball. I don't like, you know,
- 1:49:04Speaker 7: fifty five three pointers being chucked every single game, and
- 1:49:07Speaker 7: even the teams that don't do that as much still
- 1:49:10Speaker 7: like over forty.
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: Like it's not really a I don't.
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: Think it's away the game.
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: I don't like the way the games get played. Okay,
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: they were shooting from the same spots on the floor,
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: but there was no three point line. Would you still
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: all hate it?
- 1:49:22Speaker 9: Because I feel like the three is just such a
- 1:49:26Speaker 9: san Antonio series. Yeah, there is a lot ninetiesstball, so
- 1:49:29Speaker 9: I liked.
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: Some of that.
- 1:49:31Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I actually the playoffs this year, as
- 1:49:34Speaker 7: much as I criticized the NBA, were really pretty entertaining
- 1:49:38Speaker 7: all around. It's I just wish there was more variety
- 1:49:44Speaker 7: to the way the game is played, and to Alex's point,
- 1:49:46Speaker 7: san Antonio gives you.
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: A little of that.
- 1:49:49Speaker 7: And I also kind of like the fact that Wenby's
- 1:49:51Speaker 7: kind of doing the the WWE heel, you.
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: Know, and I think he's kind of embracing bad guy.
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: He's embracing being a heel. I don't like that, you villains,
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: He's kind of playing like one. Like it's not like
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: I mean, the guy had more flavorant fouls than anybody
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: else in the playoffs and almost was going to miss
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: a finals game. He's unapologetic about it.
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: I think, uh, you know, because teams are trying to
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: rough him up, so he needs to fight back.
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: Yeah, he also could you know, hit the gym, but.
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: What he strong, that's just's just a differently shaped than everybody.
- 1:50:24Speaker 10: He's so tall.
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: I don't think like that tall you don't want to
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: buke up.
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: I didn't realize that it was so controversial, But say
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: he needs to get stronger. I don't think that's controversial
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: at all.
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: Well, I don't.
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: I don't like, what's your definition of strong, Like he's
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: not going to get muscly No. I just you know, well,
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: he plays and I have no problem with it. But
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: some people do like he plays like Kevin Durant. He
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: plays like a seven six Kevin Durant. And so there's
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: so many people that I hear that are watching these
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: games that are yelling get his seven six but in
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: the post, like what are we doing? And that's not
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: his game, and say he he's a face up player,
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: Like he's a guy he plays thereund you know he
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: he's not. He's not a old school back to the
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: basket player. That's not who he is.
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: But I like, he's not afraid to drive to the
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: hoop and take his hits.
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: No, I'm like, I don't think he's a baby or anything.
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: I just think that, you know, there's Paul says that
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: he you know, he doesn't like the style of play,
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: and I think that, you know, Wemby should Wenby in
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: the eighties or the nineties would have been back to
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: the basket player. He would have been posting up and
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: they would have been thrown them the ball and he
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: would have been making kareem hook shot.
- 1:51:29Speaker 7: And to be clear, I don't want all of that either.
- 1:51:31Speaker 7: I just wish there was some variety. It's basically five out,
- 1:51:35Speaker 7: pass it around, driving dish for an open three, and
- 1:51:39Speaker 7: that's how almost everybody plays. To Alex's point, I think
- 1:51:42Speaker 7: OKC doesn't.
- 1:51:43Speaker 2: Really play like shy a little bit.
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: But no, they don't. They don't shoot as many threes
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: as most.
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: They don't and they don't there was constant moves.
- 1:51:52Speaker 7: Brentson's not afraid to penetrate and pull up, which I
- 1:51:55Speaker 7: kind of like.
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: I do think that those teams, you know, the two
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: West teams and the Knicks, are maybe going to create
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: more of that because that's how you have to win. Yeah,
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: they were successful with doing it.
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: Pascal and Harlem writes in I'm Half French. In my
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: whole life, the only soccer I've watched regularly is the
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: World Cup in the Olympics. To me, the biggest barrier
- 1:52:15Speaker 2: to soccer's popularity in the US is time the European
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: games are usually happening while we're at work or school,
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: so growing up, the kids don't have any high level games.
- 1:52:25Speaker 10: To watch Saturday morning EPL.
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: I know, you got to have Peacock though, it's like
- 1:52:31Speaker 2: trying to get kids to be football fans with the
- 1:52:34Speaker 2: UFL or baseball fans with Triple A.
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: I think that the biggest issue is something that he
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: I think was kind of hovering around, is like we
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: don't have superstar American soccer players. We have, like you know,
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: you can't. If you're a kid and you're an American, you
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: can turn on the TV and you can see we're
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: talking about Wemby. You can see Wemby play and like
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: that you can say, you know, he's the he's the best,
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: Like that's cool. You can watch you know, Drake May,
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: you can watch you know well and baseball, hockey, any
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: of them.
- 1:53:08Speaker 2: I think you really hit on something there because you
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: can't underestimate the influence of that superstar. Look at what
- 1:53:16Speaker 2: Yao Ming did for basketball in China. Yeah, and now
- 1:53:19Speaker 2: look what basketball is in China.
- 1:53:21Speaker 5: Wing Gretzky did for hockey in La. Right, you is
- 1:53:24Speaker 5: not You're always bring it back.
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: You are not going to create from like I'm just
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: gonna latch onto like Arsenal, I'm just gonna I live
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: in America, but at eight a m. On Saturday mornings,
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: I'm going to watch Arsenal football. You don't you don't
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: care like you we do for Boston sports, Like that's
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: not gonna like come, I've tried, trust me, Like it doesn't.
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: It's not easy to create that. Whereas with the UN's
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: mess national team, like you feel like you have a
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: rooting interest, like you have you have a reason to
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: root for that, you know. I think that that's for
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: a lot of kids. Is the hardest part now is
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: the MLS just isn't isn't that there? There isn't a player?
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: God forbid the day when we do have this amazing,
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: amazing soccer player and he goes and plays in the
- 1:54:11Speaker 2: Premier League or Boondesliga, all our kids are going to
- 1:54:15Speaker 2: be watching that league for that guy.
- 1:54:18Speaker 8: But like, how do they find him before he gets there?
- 1:54:20Speaker 8: You know, like how do they you know what I mean?
- 1:54:21Speaker 8: Like is he on Clemson or.
- 1:54:25Speaker 9: It's going to be an American dad was like stationed
- 1:54:28Speaker 9: in the military in Europe and he actually grew up.
- 1:54:30Speaker 7: Well, like the kid that scored all the goals the
- 1:54:32Speaker 7: other day, who's wife went into premature labor and happened
- 1:54:36Speaker 7: to be born in the United States.
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: Oh yeah, he's and thank you for picking the USA.
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: But like you know, he the reason why he picked
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: the USA was because he didn't think he was going
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: to play for England. Like he wasn't going to make England.
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: So when they said to him, do you want to
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: be English?
- 1:54:56Speaker 10: Because he's on the shoulder we need though, but he's.
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: Played for Englan and as a younger, younger lad he
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: played for England and so then but then they he
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: could have he could have played for three different teams.
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: Actually he could have played for Nigeria too, I think,
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: and he decided to play for the US. What are
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: you two doing them watching the end of this game?
- 1:55:17Speaker 7: We had we had we had a handball on them
- 1:55:23Speaker 7: to give South penalty.
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: Driving crazy.
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: I'm telling you ball, it doesn't matter if it's a
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: bouncing ball.
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: He's watching.
- 1:55:32Speaker 7: I'm telling you, if all the games had this amount
- 1:55:35Speaker 7: of scoring opportunities that both ends, I would watch a lot.
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: Of the World Cup.
- 1:55:39Speaker 9: Has the people that hate soccer, they saw one draw
- 1:55:43Speaker 9: one time and it just ruined it for them.
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: Well, I have one time every game in the tournaments
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: draw it happens.
- 1:55:51Speaker 8: Having watched, my feeling towards ties has evolved slightly, Like
- 1:55:55Speaker 8: I I realized that it's a unique thing to soccer.
- 1:55:58Speaker 8: Of like you kind of survived at this point. There's
- 1:56:01Speaker 8: still like some value to surviving, but a win is
- 1:56:03Speaker 8: even bigger to get, you know, three points, and.
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: If you're an underdock then tying is huge, like if
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: you're Cape verd and then tying.
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: Is of getting a point. For tie, you should get minus,
- 1:56:14Speaker 2: you should get negative for time.
- 1:56:16Speaker 10: What do you get for a lot?
- 1:56:16Speaker 2: And then negative negative is zero loss of zero. But
- 1:56:21Speaker 2: for a tie you should be penalty that way, you
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: get so urgent at the end to score.
- 1:56:28Speaker 9: Why wouldn't you just kick an on goal at the
- 1:56:29Speaker 9: end if you're not going to get penalized because for
- 1:56:32Speaker 9: a lot.
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: That's true. That kind of killed that one.
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, all.
- 1:56:45Speaker 2: Right, all right, Well that's gonna be it for this
- 1:56:48Speaker 2: edition of Patriot's Unfiltered. We will be back tomorrow again
- 1:56:52Speaker 2: with our World Cup not FIFA World Cup schedule. I'm
- 1:56:55Speaker 2: not going to be here tomorrow tomorrow, I mean next

- 1:57:03Speaker 2: Wednesday at two. Yes, we'll see you Wednesday Wednesday.
