- 0:00Welcome back everyone to the Real Life Theology Podcast.
- 0:05Today's episode features Nate Ross,
- 0:07who's going to help us see why leaders must surrender
- 0:11to Jesus as their true success.
- 0:17Well, hey everybody, so good to be with you.
- 0:19And actually the reason why it's really good
- 0:21is I'm not supposed to be here.
- 0:22Shane Wood was supposed to be here
- 0:24and unfortunately he couldn't make it.
- 0:25And so Bobby reached out and said,
- 0:27can you come and can you share at the Renew Conference?
- 0:30And the renew.org, it's been speaking in my life.
- 0:33And I said, man, I would love to.
- 0:35You know, this is room full of leaders.
- 0:37This would be great.
- 0:38And he said, can you come talk about surrender?
- 0:42Don't you want me to come talk about setting the course?
- 0:44Right, don't you want me to talk about how you plan
- 0:46and you do all these sorts of leadership things?
- 0:48He's like, that's right.
- 0:49So come talk about surrender.
- 0:51And I was like, oh man, a room full of leaders.
- 0:54Let's just be real.
- 0:55We do not like to surrender.
- 0:58We don't like to surrender.
- 0:59Maybe we don't like to give up.
- 1:02David, your words are so good.
- 1:03Man, God wants to do more through us.
- 1:05Let's not surrender.
- 1:06But what is a key thing I'm learning
- 1:07about the life of Christ is there is no setting the course
- 1:10without surrender.
- 1:12There is no way forward without it.
- 1:14Matter of fact, I began to think about surrender
- 1:16in my own life and we're gonna look just kind of briefly
- 1:18how surrender leads the church through the book of Acts.
- 1:21But I even thought about my baptism, July 4th, 1992,
- 1:24at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church.
- 1:26We did a kind of private ceremony
- 1:28where there's about 30 of our family and friends.
- 1:30And my dad was one of the pastors
- 1:32and we went to get into the baptistry.
- 1:34And it was back in the old days
- 1:35where the pastors would wear the waders.
- 1:37Anybody remember that?
- 1:38You know, you'd go, I don't know if you'd go like fishing
- 1:40in the creek after or whatever.
- 1:41And I remember my dad walks in, he's got the waders on.
- 1:45And I walk in and I take one step into the baptistry
- 1:49and I yell out this phrase, I can't do it.
- 1:52Like, oh my gosh, he can't give his life
- 1:55to the Lord Jesus Christ, you know?
- 1:57And this is so embarrassing.
- 1:58His dad's the pastor, I can't, I can't do it.
- 2:03The heater had broke the night before in the baptistry.
- 2:07It didn't go cold, it went over 110 degrees boiling hot.
- 2:13Talk about feeling the fires of hell, right?
- 2:15And you're surrendering your life to the Lord.
- 2:18I literally, I stepped in, I couldn't do it.
- 2:20I literally, I stepped in, I couldn't get it.
- 2:22They start dumping cold water into the baptistry.
- 2:25It doesn't cool down.
- 2:26It's one of those, I mean, it's just scalding hot.
- 2:28So literally they set me on the edge of the baptistry
- 2:30and they baptize me like a chicken nugget
- 2:32and sweet and sour sauce.
- 2:33They just take me down and throw me out.
- 2:37It's how my life of surrender started to Jesus.
- 2:40Hey, can anybody relate?
- 2:43Going, man, I gave my life to the Lord.
- 2:44It's gonna be great.
- 2:45I'm gonna go to Bible college.
- 2:46I'm gonna find my wife.
- 2:46It's gonna be this.
- 2:47It's gonna be, we're gonna plant the church.
- 2:48I'm gonna be on Outreach Magazine.
- 2:49Turns out Outreach Magazine has no more lists.
- 2:52You can't make the list because of the pandemic.
- 2:54It's all over.
- 2:55And that's how surrender starts.
- 2:59And what I love about this is in the midst
- 3:01of the messiness of surrender, God is at work.
- 3:04Matter of fact, the great commission in Acts
- 3:08starts by the disciples' failure to see their surrender.
- 3:13Lord, at this time, will you restore the kingdom to Israel?
- 3:18And what does Jesus give them?
- 3:20He gives them the great commission.
- 3:23In their failure to see Jesus as their success,
- 3:27he gives them the commission.
- 3:28No, no, but you're gonna receive power
- 3:32when my Holy Spirit comes on you
- 3:34and you are going to be my witnesses
- 3:38in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria
- 3:40and to the ends of the earth.
- 3:43See, a lot of times in our failure,
- 3:45we don't understand why surrender is so important,
- 3:47but this is what I'm beginning to understand.
- 3:49Is this more important to me as a leader
- 3:51setting the course as my surrender to Jesus?
- 3:54Because seeing Jesus as my success in every situation
- 3:58is why surrender is so important.
- 4:00Jesus, you are my success right now.
- 4:02In the middle of this, this weekend as a church,
- 4:04we reopened finally.
- 4:06And I'll tell you what, man,
- 4:06I have felt like a failure through this whole time.
- 4:09And this is why surrender is so important.
- 4:11Because what happens in the life of the disciples is this.
- 4:15They're fumbling around,
- 4:16they're trying to figure this stuff out,
- 4:17they're asking the wrong questions.
- 4:19Can you imagine that question being asked to Jesus
- 4:21after his three and a half years of investing,
- 4:23after going to the cross, being resurrected,
- 4:26and all they want is their nation to be great?
- 4:31At that moment, I'm fine with Jesus.
- 4:32I'm like, boys, I gave it a whirl, it's over, right?
- 4:36I'm off.
- 4:37And Jesus says, no, I wanna give you more
- 4:39in the midst of your failure.
- 4:41I wanna give you more,
- 4:44but you gotta surrender to me.
- 4:47I feel like what's become a little bit
- 4:48of a life verse for me, I'm an Enneagram three.
- 4:51So for me, failure is the like fatality.
- 4:56So there's a deep fear of failure in my life.
- 4:59And what the Lord gave me out of John 5, 19,
- 5:02this is just a little bit of the, to me,
- 5:04what I kind of call like the special sauce of Jesus
- 5:07leading out of surrender.
- 5:08He doesn't just call us to surrender,
- 5:10he lived a life of surrender.
- 5:12In John 5, 19, verse 20, what I found was this,
- 5:16he healed on the Sabbath, and then it said,
- 5:19the Pharisees tried all the harder to kill him.
- 5:24And listen to how he responds,
- 5:26because he paves the way for us,
- 5:28because as leaders, we don't know how to surrender.
- 5:30Well, I think it surrenders this, this,
- 5:32and Jesus just lays out surrender for us.
- 5:34Listen to what he says in John 5, 19.
- 5:36He really just gives us the path forward.
- 5:39It said, Jesus gave him this answer.
- 5:41He said, I tell you the truth,
- 5:43the son can do nothing by himself.
- 5:46He can do only what he sees the father doing,
- 5:49because whatever the father does, the son also does.
- 5:53And then here's the anchor, for the father loves the son
- 5:59and shows him all he does.
- 6:01And three things that I think that Jesus is pointing here,
- 6:04what a surrendered life looks like is one,
- 6:06we do nothing by ourselves.
- 6:09We just do nothing by ourselves.
- 6:10And then here's what I love about how Jesus says here,
- 6:12because a lot of times,
- 6:13this is why I think we don't like surrender as leaders,
- 6:15because we mistake the idea of surrender means to do nothing.
- 6:20I'm just gonna wait for God to move.
- 6:23I'm gonna wait for God to speak.
- 6:24You know, the Bible's right there, pick it up.
- 6:26And we confuse this idea of surrender.
- 6:28And you know what he says surrender is?
- 6:30Surrender is actually doing what God shows you to do.
- 6:34You do what the father shows me to do.
- 6:36And you know why he says that?
- 6:37Because the father loves me, he loves me.
- 6:43Before we start loving God and loving people,
- 6:45I think the biggest challenge for us coming up is this,
- 6:47learning how to be loved by our heavenly father.
- 6:51It's learning how to be loved by our father.
- 6:54Because when we are loved by our father,
- 6:56we will love the father and we will love our neighbor
- 6:58and we will make disciples and we will be healthy disciples.
- 7:01That's what Jesus says, I don't do anything by myself.
- 7:03I know you wanna kill me, I'm not alone.
- 7:06I'm not alone, not alone.
- 7:09And I think if we wanna grow more as being disciples
- 7:11in a disciple making movement, it's this,
- 7:13we've got to find Jesus in our failures.
- 7:17Not our successes, in our failures.
- 7:20That's where he meets these disciples in Acts chapter one.
- 7:24Will you restore the kingdom?
- 7:25Mm, nope, not the time for you to know.
- 7:30But go make disciples, go make disciples.
- 7:35I'll be honest, this season has been what feels like
- 7:39the biggest season of failure for me.
- 7:42We started three years ago,
- 7:44we started planning a capital campaign for our church.
- 7:48I've only been the lead pastor for three years
- 7:49and we're out of room, we need to do these things.
- 7:51And so we spent three years
- 7:52trying to come up with these plans.
- 7:54We launched it in January,
- 7:55did our capital campaign to expand the building.
- 7:58You know where this is going.
- 8:00Two weeks after people making commitment weekend,
- 8:04we had to close our campus for COVID.
- 8:06Nothing like asking people to give generously
- 8:09to a building they can't come to.
- 8:12But would you still trust the Lord, right?
- 8:16That wasn't the hard part, here was the hard part.
- 8:19Our generosity coach said, here's what you do.
- 8:21After the first quarter, you send out mailers
- 8:24telling people how the campaign's going.
- 8:26You remind them in the printed, their commitment,
- 8:29what they've given so they can continue to take those steps.
- 8:32We're like, okay, we did everything right.
- 8:35We mailed it out, here was the only problem.
- 8:37The printing company got behind and they printed,
- 8:41they printed the handout and what was supposed to happen
- 8:44was they printed the name on the outside.
- 8:46They were supposed to turn it over,
- 8:48print the giving commitment and what has been given
- 8:52and then mail it out.
- 8:54The printing company printed the names on the outside
- 8:56and when they went to do this, the machine switched.
- 8:59Our entire database of people who had made commitments
- 9:03got the wrong commitment through the mail
- 9:07in the past couple of months, every single person.
- 9:12I said, hey, good news guys,
- 9:13we all have new accountability partners.
- 9:15And no, I did not say that, thought about it.
- 9:23My phone's blowing up.
- 9:24I thought this was a personal private commitment.
- 9:30I thought nobody else knew this.
- 9:34I do nothing by myself.
- 9:37I literally just had to lay on the floor,
- 9:41total embarrassment, total failure.
- 9:46And you know why?
- 9:48Here's what the Lord was revealing to me in this season.
- 9:52Nate, your success to you is your effort.
- 9:58I need your success to be Jesus.
- 10:00Here's where my mind is jacked up.
- 10:04If you work hard enough, everything will work out.
- 10:09And if it's not working out, guess what you do?
- 10:12You work harder, you work harder.
- 10:18That's not the gospel.
- 10:20The hard work has been done.
- 10:23The hard work has been done.
- 10:25I do nothing by myself.
- 10:27The hard work has been done.
- 10:28I do nothing by myself.
- 10:30I only do what the Father shows me to do.
- 10:34Because Nate, people might not love you right now,
- 10:41but your Father does.
- 10:43Your Father does.
- 10:46This is why surrender matters so much to us as disciples
- 10:49in making the disciple-making movement.
- 10:52We did everything right and we still failed.
- 10:55We did everything right.
- 10:56We did everything right.
- 10:59What I'm learning more about surrender is this.
- 11:01I've confused sacrifice for surrender.
- 11:06God, I'm sacrificing this stuff.
- 11:08Things should work out.
- 11:09That's not what he's asked.
- 11:10I've asked you to surrender your life to me.
- 11:12Matter of fact, Samuel had to confront Saul about this.
- 11:15If you remember this in 1 Samuel 15, verse 22,
- 11:18Samuel replied to Saul,
- 11:19does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
- 11:23as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
- 11:28To obey is better than sacrifice.
- 11:31To heed is better than the fat of rams.
- 11:33And this was Saul's confession.
- 11:35I have sinned.
- 11:36I violated the Lord's command and your instructions.
- 11:39And then he reveals what he had surrendered his life to.
- 11:43I was afraid of the people, so I gave in to them.
- 11:48Fill in your own blank today.
- 11:50What have you surrendered to
- 11:52more than the success of Jesus?
- 11:56I resonate with Saul.
- 11:58I was afraid of the people.
- 11:59This weekend when we reopened, I guarantee this.
- 12:02Hey, how are you?
- 12:03I mean, there's gonna be like, uh-oh, like, uh-uh.
- 12:06There's gonna be a,
- 12:07there's gonna be an opportunity
- 12:09for me to be afraid of the people
- 12:12or surrender to the Lord and walk in what he has.
- 12:16As we find out in the book of Acts, on and on again,
- 12:19we see these people surrendering to the Lord.
- 12:22Matter of fact, what I find amazing is this.
- 12:23The book of Luke and Acts, 52 chapters devoted to one man.
- 12:28And at the end of 52 chapters, we have no baptism video.
- 12:32We have no testimony, great thing.
- 12:34You don't know if Theophilus even gives his life
- 12:36to the Lord, but you know this.
- 12:38The reason why 52 chapters were written
- 12:40is because a man was struggling,
- 12:41trying to come to the terms
- 12:43of surrendering his life to the Lord.
- 12:46And what Jesus says is this.
- 12:47Over 20% of the New Testament is written to one man,
- 12:50and that is perfectly fine,
- 12:51because it is about surrendering
- 12:52to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
- 12:55It's about surrendering our lives to him.
- 12:58Two quick things I wanna encourage us with
- 12:59if we're gonna surrender.
- 13:00One is this, as I see through the book of Acts.
- 13:03If we're gonna surrender our life to Jesus,
- 13:05we better learn how to raise the sail
- 13:06instead of rowing the boat.
- 13:09We hear Jesus talk about the wind and the power of the wind.
- 13:12And what happens in the book of Acts
- 13:14is the disciples quit asking about restoring Israel,
- 13:17and they start stepping into the Spirit,
- 13:19and they start raising their sails.
- 13:21It's said that in 1300 BC,
- 13:23the Mesopotamians were the first ones to discover the sail.
- 13:26And can you imagine what that moment was like on the boat
- 13:29when the first sail went up,
- 13:30and they experienced a power
- 13:32they had never experienced before?
- 13:34I mean, just put yourself there on that boat.
- 13:37Your whole life had been rowing and rowing.
- 13:41And for that time, you raised the sail,
- 13:44and you experienced a power you have never experienced.
- 13:47That's what the book of Acts is.
- 13:48They, Peter, quit rowing the boat.
- 13:52In 50 days, he goes from cutting a man's ear off,
- 13:55denying Christ, to preaching the first sermon in 3000.
- 13:58That's a heck of an internship right there.
- 14:0050 days.
- 14:04You know why?
- 14:05He quit rowing the boat, and he raised the sail.
- 14:09And we get 1 and 2 Peter 20 years later
- 14:12of a man who had surrendered his life to the Lord.
- 14:15And I can't get over 1 Peter 4, verse 19,
- 14:18when Peter says this, instead of denying Christ,
- 14:20you know what he says?
- 14:21He says, if you are suffering according to God's will,
- 14:24you should commit your life to your faithful creator
- 14:27and continue to do good.
- 14:32Raise the sails.
- 14:34Raise the sails, because our success is in Jesus.
- 14:39And he has a fresh wind to move his church forward.
- 14:45Second thing is this, though.
- 14:47Not only do we raise the sails,
- 14:48the surrendered life in the book of Acts,
- 14:50it speaks about Jesus.
- 14:53We oftentimes make Acts a theological discussion
- 14:56about tongues, when actually the proof of the Spirit
- 14:59throughout all of the book of Acts is this,
- 15:02that people spoke boldly of Jesus.
- 15:05It ends saying, boldly and without hindrance.
- 15:10They taught about Jesus.
- 15:13They spoke about Jesus.
- 15:17Their success had become Jesus,
- 15:23because they surrendered to him.
- 15:26I don't know what this year's been,
- 15:28but what I do know is this.
- 15:31Oftentimes we feel like, I can't.
- 15:35And Jesus is saying this to us today.
- 15:38I can, because I did.
- 15:42And I just want to pray for us right now.
- 15:45As this season of surrender is upon us,
- 15:48David, I think you said it great.
- 15:49I think we're in a new season of pruning.
- 15:51I think God has something different for us to do.
- 15:54And so I just want to invite you right now,
- 15:56just to pray for me to say a prayer over you.
- 16:00As we begin to uncover this calling on our life of surrender.
- 16:05Jesus, we thank you.
- 16:09That Jesus, you don't just ask us to go and make disciples
- 16:12and to be your witnesses and start on us.
- 16:14Jesus, this all started with you.
- 16:19You are our success.
- 16:22You are our power.
- 16:25You're our only hope.
- 16:30And so Jesus, right now, I know we are a room full of leaders.
- 16:36Father, we struggle to surrender,
- 16:40but by your grace and by your mercy right now,
- 16:43would you free our hearts
- 16:47from what we're holding back from you?
- 16:53Holy Spirit,
- 16:54would you bring fresh wind into this place,
- 16:59into us as your leaders?
- 17:02If we're lying on the floor,
- 17:05or God, maybe some things are just going great in this room,
- 17:08would you remind us it's only by your power?
- 17:14And Jesus, we will never get over your surrender
- 17:16and your journey to the cross.
- 17:19And Jesus, we thank you for that.
- 17:21Your surrender and your journey to the cross.
- 17:25And so thank you.
- 17:27Thank you for leading the way.
- 17:29Thank you for being our hope.
